One of the Greatest Inventions of All Time
Nikola Tesla has many revolutionary inventions to his credit, but he is best known for his pioneering work in the development and promotion of alternating current (AC) electrical systems. Tesla's innovations in AC technology revolutionized the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power, becoming the foundation for the modern electrical power systems that we use today.
There is a common misconception made that Tesla was the first to invent, or discover, AC, but this is not true. It is well-known that Hippolyte Pixii was the first to discover AC in 1832. Pixii was an instrument maker from Paris who built an early form of an alternating current electrical generator (based on the principle of electromagnetic induction discovered by Michael Faraday), and thus started a new industry in power transmission. Tesla was not the first to discover or invent an AC motor, but he was the first to invent a practical AC induction motor with commercial value that could outperform all other motors. It must be noted that Italian inventor Galileo Ferraris also invented an induction motor similar to Tesla's, but it had no commercial value, and he even admitted himself that it was useless. Tesla's induction motor operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, properly utilizing a rotating magnetic field that induces a current in a stationary conductor, resulting in rotational motion. The utilization of the rotating magnetic field makes the motor more simple, robust, versatile, efficient, and cost effective in that it has less moving parts reducing the likelihood of mechanical failure (as was common in other motors).
Tesla's induction motor became a fundamental component in the field of electrical engineering and is used today in various applications, being one of the most widely used devices in the world. The motors play a crucial role in transmitting electrical power to homes and businesses. They are commonly used in power generation plants to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, which is then transmitted through the power grid for distribution to various locations. Induction motors are also widely employed in appliances and machinery within homes and businesses for various applications. These applications include conveyor systems, hoists, cranes, lifts, pumps, fans, ventilation systems, compressors, manufacturing machinery, wind turbines, washing machines, refrigerators, garbage disposals, microwaves, dishwashers, vacuums, air conditioners, robotics, electric vehicles, trains, power tools, printers, etc. Basically, anything that requires a spinning action for power.
The induction motor is widely considered one of the most important inventions in the history of electrical engineering. Its importance lies in its transformative impact on industries, its efficiency and reliability, and its role in the broader electrification of society.

Torque in induction motor and relationship with power factor.
the torque in induction motor is proportional to the product of flux per stator pole and the rotor current one more term we will take in account is power factor of the rotor.
T → φ * I₂ * cos∅₂
Where φ - flux per status pole
I₂ - rotor current
cos∅₂ - rotor power factor
The induced rotor EMF E2 is proportional to flux per status φ.
Therefore T = K1 * E₂ * I₂ * cos∅₂
Where K1 is another constant.
∅₂ phase angle rotor current and rotorEMF.
From the above equation it is clear that when φ2 increases cos∅₂ decreases and vice versa.
due to the revolving stator flux EMF is induced in rotor conductor, and this EMI is also sinusoidal.
When rotor is non inductive.
φ₂=0
in this case rotor current is in phase with rotor EMF. So the instantaneous value of torque is product of instantaneous value of flux and current. It is seen that torque is always positive.
When rotor is inductive load.
in inductive load I₂ lags behind E₂ bY an angle φ2.
φ2 = tan-¹(X₂/R₂ )
R2 = rotor resistance per phase
X2 = rota reactance per phase at standstill.
Its clear from diagram that portion of torque is reverse direction and hence the total torque is difference of forward torque and reverse torque. When φ2 = 90 degree then reverse torque equals to forward torque and total torque is equals to zero so the motor will not run.

The induction motor, pictured above, was invented by Nikola Tesla in 1888, with financial backing from George Westinghouse. Essentially, these motors enabled the use of alternating current for establishing what we now call the electrical grid, and the large-scale use of electricity generally.
Westinghouse, having invested most of the money, and having just enough scientific understanding to suspect (correctly) that alternating current, not direct current (as Edison wrongly imagined), would be more practical (and lucrative) for lighting up cities. received most of the profit, while the genius of Nikola Tesla, as with his contributions to radio technology, was largely forgotten in his own time.
As for Tesla's bitter rival Edison, his public humiliation for attempting to discredit alternating current was a rare public comeuppance for Edison who, in stark contrast to Tesla, generally received more than his fair share of the press and public credit.

New motor for the drill press installed today!
I picked up this craftsman 15” floor standing drill press almost two years ago for $50 due to a ‘bad motor’ and kept an eye out for a replacement. My guess was the motor went either because of the mud wasp nests inside or something heavy dropped on to the rear of the tool at some point.
Today was the lucky day, found this air compressor with a 1 HP motor for $40. Although the compressor part is good quality, I don’t feel too bad using it for parts because the electronics were cobbled together and there were multiple leaks.
The new (to me) motor bolted up with minor modifications to the drive shroud on the drill press.
The most important part of working on anything electronic is taking a photo of where all the wires go before taking it apart!
The new motor is plenty powerful, twice as powerful as the original, but it runs at 3450 RPM rather than the spec 1725. So I have to be careful and use the appropriate pulley combinations for what I’m doing.
I’m less than $100 in on a tool that even at harbor freight would cost $400 and $600-1000 for the equivalent in grizzly or jet, so I’ll call that a win.
One more issue to work out, it spins in the wrong direction. That’ll be the next project: determining which winding leads need swapped.
