Ok I think I’ve thought of my birthday headcanons (they’re lowkey not even good 😭) but IDC. None are character specific so go with your gut 🩷 (also side note: idk if you remember back in like 2015 when authors would do that thing where ppl give brief descriptions of themselves and then they’d give a character to ship you with or not but I feel like that might be a good idea for engagement. But idk I’m also stupid so maybe not 💀 It’s less effort than headcanons and one-shots methinks. ANYWAY)

Learning a language for you

Alfred

In the beginning, he’ll learn simple phrases and say them to you for shits and giggles. But as the relationship gets more serious, he’ll want to get fluent to connect with you on a deeper level. Alfred will study regularly and hold conversations with you in your native tongue to practice his speaking. He’s a natural at learning languages to the point that it’s shocking. He can even nail the four Chinese intonations, so imagine just how easy Spanish is for him as an English speaker. Fast forward a few years, and he’ll be speaking rapid-fire Spanish with you like a native.

Mathias

Like Alfred, he’ll start with beginner-level words before eventually going pro. It may take him a little longer to get it down pat, but he needs to be a part of your culture to feel close to you. He will sit down with you and repeat sentences for you until he gets it right. He also finds Spanish very sexy, so if you ever talk dirty to him he wants to be able to understand you. Mathias may want you to learn Danish for him in return, and if you do, he will be on his knees. You could even say he’s very sex-motivated, but if you asked him, he just wants to be the perfect partner for you.

Allen

Believe it or not, he’s already fluent in Spanish. He just never talks about it. Apart from knowing his native language, he’s always lived around Spanish-speakers. And as a person who is deeply involved with his community, it’s a given that he will eventually catch onto the local lingo. After learning about where you’re from, he’ll randomly come up to you one day and drop a whole-ass sentence in Spanish before walking off again. Allen does this to get your undivided attention, and it works like a charm even after the first time. Otherwise, he will occasionally speak Spanglish.

Matt

He’s terrible at learning languages, and it’s even harder for him when it’s not one of his special interests. So he may just like other aspects of your culture, i.e., the food, but he won’t put a lot of effort into it. You can take advantage of this by talking shit about him in Spanish in front of him. Matt may not understand what you said, but he’ll know you’re mad at him. But as the years go by, he’ll want to take it seriously and study in secret. He doesn’t want you to know just how much he’s trying for you, and also because he might not even get good at it. But he’ll get it one day.

When he falls into a zoo enclosure

I have no clue how to do this one but here’s one with Matt 💀

Matt

He’s too clever and self-aware to ever fall into a zoo enclosure, but he would no doubt try and save someone who did. Especially a small child. He will jump over the fencing, swim across the moat, pick them up and run to safety, but more importantly, before an innocent animal gets put down. He will literally put himself between a bear and armed men like Owen Grady from Jurassic World. After the situation simmers down, you’re treating him for the few injuries he’s sustained, and it’s the most interesting conversation you’ve ever had. He’s clearly got a few screws loose, but he’s the one who thinks everybody else is crazy.

When he teaches you how to drive

Alfred

He’s not a perfect teacher, but he really does try. Some days, you pick up on things fast and well, but on other days, he’s like Noah teaching Allie how to drive a truck. You two are screaming at each other and he doesn’t care to hide how he feels about your lack of driving skills. Alfred can have short fuse when it comes to what he can’t relate to or empathize with, but at the same time, he’s sensitive toward what he can. Needless to say, he will apologize and encourage you to keep learning from him because he has faith in you. If you can do everything else, you can drive a car.

Mathias

He’s very patient when it comes to teaching you how to drive. He understands how hard it can be because he struggled a little in the beginning too. If you break suddenly, stall, or run over a curb, he will just tell you calmly what you’re doing wrong. He also has really fast reflexes when the situation calls for it, so he’ll steer you back to safety. Mathias will spend an hour or two instructing you before taking over and driving home. If you don’t make a lot of progress, he’ll always say that he can be the driver in the relationship and you can be his passenger princess, so don’t worry.

Allen

He’s a safety first kind of guy. He’ll get you to tick all the boxes, even when he doesn’t always do that himself. For that, he’s also really patient. Allen would much rather sleep soundly knowing you’re safe on the road and not getting into an accident. In the event of minor collision, he’ll take the blame (he’s the one with a full license) and speak with the person you just crashed into, then get back in and sit in silence for a while. As much as he loves you, he tells you that it might be best that you take a break from driving. He can afford only so many repairs, so he’ll just make it so that you won’t need to go anywhere without him.

Matt

He isn’t the best teacher in the world, especially when driving comes so naturally to him. He just doesn’t understand why you can’t do it like him. So it’s no walk in the park when you’re sitting in the truck, listening to him yell at you after you make the same mistake again. You might end up crying by the end of it, but he’ll make it up to you by kissing you for hours back in his cabin. Matt will tell you that he’ll keep teaching you even if you’re bad at driving, because there’s no other person around to. Even then, he eventually gets you to improve despite his unorthodox methods.

When you go shopping

Alfred

He may not look like it, but he does enjoy a good shop. He’s just more selective about it. Alfred will give you some helpful advice if you ask him if you should buy something. But if it makes you happy, he wouldn’t hold it against you. After all, he has a a niche and expensive hobby himself. Collector’s items. Film and video game memorabilia. He’s up to date on all the pre-orders of exclusive merch he wants, and he’s won a few auctions. He enjoys the thought of owning items that someone else wanted but missed out on. He finds it hilarious as he runs off of punitive measures of success.

Mathias

He’s an enabler because he has just as bad of a shopping addiction. When you’re together, you burn through your money twice as fast. He has a bad habit of buying things he finds cute and not necessarily useful, but he can’t resist the rush of dopamine he gets from an occasional splurge. Mathias doesn’t see an issue with pampering himself every now and then, and definitely not you. At the end of the day, you two will have a giant stockpile of unused and decorative goods somewhere at home. Is this a sign of the end, or just the beginning of a long and comfortable life?

Allen

Allen is a bit of a mixed bag. First of all, he wants to spoil you, and anything you wanna buy, he will want to buy for you. He won’t question the things you like, nor make you feel bad. But the problem is, he’s not very liquid. Allen will feel super guilty because of it, especially when he has to talk you out of a store. It’s not his fault for not being able to afford everything you want, but he takes it to heart because he feels like it’s his responsibility to provide for you. Just for his sake, you might consider being a bit more conservative so he doesn’t stay up all night thinking about it.

Matt

Matt has probably gone shopping in a mall four times in his life. But online? Never. If you need something, he’ll just tell you he has it at home. And if not, he’ll just make it for you. If you need a pencil, he’ll sharpen a piece of graphite for you. No more expensive Japanese stationery. He’s the most frugal and resourceful person alive, so even cheap prices will turn him away. Anything that costs money will cost too much because you’re selling your soul and turning into a mindless consumer. He doesn’t eat processed food either, so he’s out here living like Captain Fantastic.

#4 Demeter Cabin: Sausage, Shelby, Bdubs, Stress Sausage: This man built Sanctuary in a jungle and has flowers in his hair. He sells wood. There is no other place to put him. Shelby: Mushroom gnome, spooky mangrove witch, powerful storm witch, i need not continue. Bdubs: Moss man. Stress: SHE HAS FLOWERS

#5 Ares Cabin: Martyn, False Martyn: His planet is Mars, which is the roman version of Ares. He ended Limited Life in such a violent way, i can't help it. He was also red for the majority of Secret Life. False: I just feel like False should get to kill people more often.

#6 Athena Cabin: Grian, Pix, Owen, Xisuma Grian: This sums it up pretty well

Pix: Smart man. Archeologist and definitely a nerd. I wanna see him skipping out on training just so he can read history books. Owen: He likes to explore and discover new things in Pirates. In Rats, he's a tinkerer. In New Life, he's an explorer who wants to study hybrids. In Empires, he's a Llama who's curious about how humans work. Just a very curious character overall. Xisuma: Admin. I'm not elaborating.

Anyway, Pearl gets to be an Artemis kid because her symbolism is moon, she loves dogs, and will commit murder and hunt at night.

why is there also something about loki being so comfortable in Mobius' space, just in these little moments here and there? Mobius clearly invites him to hang out in his cubicle to do his TVA tests and by the time we open up on him there he's made himself fully at home- not only is he reclining in the chair and I think propping his feet on the desk (maybe? idk) he's also studying Mobius' jetski magazine with an air of both casual indifference and fascination (in the mundane, no less) WHICH HE LATER ASKS ABOUT VERY EAGERLY like loooki you're a GOD, he's a little bureaucrat in a brown suit reading inane midgardian literature on jetskis and you're over here about to write a dissertation on mobius and why he loves jetskis and why jetskis are indeed awesome just like him i mean honestly the thirst

anyway, there's that and then there's lunch scene where Loki abjectly dismantles every bit of food Mobius has to make his point, there's the file-studying scene where Loki is sprawled out asleep over like 75% of the desk and very much vulnerable to anyone that might want to take advantage of that (not Mobius tho, and apparently no one else as long as Mobius is sitting there with him interesting), there's the feet tangling under the table on their coffee date and in that same scene the way both of their body languages are open and relaxed towards one another (a stark contrast from the rigid postures in the interrogation scene), the hand on the small of Loki's back in the Roxxcart parking lot and the little flirty lean-in Loki does towards Mobius just after. I think a lot of this is Owen and Tom having a great working relationship and on-screen dynamic, but the fact that this can so easily translate to their characters says a lot.

I could be wrong because as much as I love my little gay ice goth I'm not a scholar on him and I don't remember ever scene he's ever been in with resolute clarity, BUT it seems to me that in MOST situations Loki has been in up to that point he's never, ever 100% comfortable, certainly not comfortable enough to be splaying himself around wantonly in someone's space the way he does with Mobius. Like, one of the scenes with the Grandmaster comes to mind, when they're watching Thor battle the Hulk and he's sitting very rigidly on the opposite end of the couch- as far away from his sugar daddy as he can possibly manage, everything about him tightly wound to some degree even before Hulk showed up. (this is how I interpret the dynamic with Frostmaster, I treat it as canon lol sorry if u don't but im different)

Loki is always on the defense as he plans his next offense, so seeing him fully, completely relax and trust in someone like this ...??? does he not deserve a love like this, ultimately?? doesn't everyone?? does he not deserve to be so completely seen for everything he is and secure in the fact that his partner loves him for all of it??? after ALL he's been through over the years???

Owen Strand Screen Time Meta Post

Welcome to the first in a series of posts analyzing the screen time of characters post season 2 of 911 Lone Star. I thought this idea would be more interesting, and efficient, than trying to put all of my thoughts for every character, and the entire season into one post. 

First up is Owen because he’s the highest billed character and because when I put out a poll, he was the only character no one wanted to see first. So let’s dive in! 

Read my analysis below the cut:

Season 1

I’ll be honest, when I started calculating the screen time I had no idea how much of an impact Owen’s time would have on the fandom. I really don’t recall there being that much discourse over it until I posted the results... and it didn’t really bother me before I saw the numbers? But after I did that first episode I was like oh..... yeah that’s a problem. 

At least that pilot episode was the most screen time he’s gotten, though I’m willing to bet that will change with season 3′s “Owen Begins.” I mean in a way, the pilot episode was his begins episode (or could even be considered “Begins Again” like what they did with Bobby on 911) since it was about him packing up and starting a new life as captain of the 126. Essentially, the pilot episode served to set up that this would be Owen’s show. 

The other episode where he took up a larger chunk of the screen time was 1x06 (”Friends Like These”) which makes sense because it was exploring his friendship with Billy... little did we know how important that would be later.

Most of his screen time in season 1 was concentrated around 8-10 minutes. Obviously that is the most screen time given to a character on the show, which makes sense since the show and the character was written for him and he hold the executive producer title. 

The least amount of screen time he got was around 7.5 minutes in 1x03 (”Texas Proud”) and 1x08 (”Monster Inside”). I do find that especially interesting since those are still episodes where he played an important role in the plot, compared to other characters whose least amount of screen time meant they were lucky if they spoke one line. It’s also worth noting in 1x03, Owen still had the most screen time (though Michelle was a close second) and in 1x08, Michelle did beat him by a few minutes.

Season 2

We really went into season 2 with higher hopes, though it wasn’t much better (I would argue there was some improvement... but I’ll talk about that more later). 

It says a lot that Owen’s top 3 episodes are 2x10, 2x11, and 2x12. Though he didn’t beat his previous record of over 20 minutes, he got nearly 15 minutes in 2x11 (”Slow Burn”)... which if you didn’t already know, is also the episode that was written by his son, John Owen Lowe, and directed by his brother, Chad Lowe. He also got around 12 minutes in the two episodes that buffer that one, 2x10 (“A Little Help From My Friends”) and 2x12 (”The Big Heat”). This three episode arc accounts for about 32% of his screen time this season.

Before that major arc in 2B, in the first half of season 2 his big episodes fell around 10 minutes each; 10:45 in 2x07 (”Displaced”), 10:00 in 2x03 (”Hold the Line”, the crossover), and 9:45 in 2x01 (”Back in the Saddle”)*

A big difference for this season compared to season 1 was that there were episodes where he did not get as much screen time. Whereas his least screen time was 7:30 last season, this season there were four episodes that were lower than that; 7:15 in 2x06 (“Everyone and Their Brother”), 6:00 in 2x13 (”One Day”), 5:30 in 2x02 (”2100°”), and of course, a mere 1:00 in 2x09 (“Saving Grace”). That is really the only episode where Owen has completely stepped aside, playing a very minor role in the overall plot. In 2x02, 2x06, and 2x13, Owen came in second behind Tommy (in x02 and x13) and Paul (in x06). And in 2x09, he came in fourth (the only time thus far he was not in the top 3) behind Judd, Grace, and Tommy.

(*I’ve mentioned the new method I’ve been using to calculate screen time on a few occasions now and I’ve only revisited 2x01 so far (almost done 2x02 tho) anyway, I’m using the data I collected using the old method for these posts but in an effort to be totally upfront about how the new method is going, Owen’s screen time for 2x01 is actually about 30 seconds higher than I originally calculated, coming it at 10:15 instead of 9:45. Not much of a difference, and idk how much the rest of the new method results will impact this meta post, but I wanted to be clear about it).

Total Screen Time

As the infographic above states, his total screen time for the two seasons comes in at nearly 3 hours and 45 minutes. Divided in half, thats around 112 minutes per season, which does fall in line with the totals for each season (103.25 minutes for season 1, 120.5 minutes for season 2). However, there was only 10 episodes in season 1, compared to the 14 we saw in season 2. With that in mind, you can begin to see how season 2 was actually a smidge better than season 1 when it came to how much screen time was given to Owen. But the real indicator is the averages, which is discussed next.

Average Screen Time

As you can see in the infographic, Owen’s average screen time in season 1 was around 10:15 and dropped to 8:30 in season 2. The series screen time (which is the total divided by 24, not those two totals divided by 2) comes in at about 9:15. 

Obviously, even 8.5 minutes is still a huge amount of screen time. But compared to over 10 minutes in season 1, his average screen time is seeing a clear downward trend. I would take this as a win. It’s a small change, but it’s an indication that we are heading towards a day where Owen doesn’t eat up the majority of the screen time each episode.

Outliers

The idea of outlier episodes wasn’t even something I considered until a few weeks ago. This would be an episode where the screen time total was either much higher, or much lower than what is normally seen for that character.

According to my calculations, in season 1 the pilot episode at 20:45 is an outlier for Owen. In season 2, 2x09 (”Saving Grace”) is also an outlier at 1:00. And looking at the data set for all the episodes in series, both numbers (20:45 and 1:00) are outliers. (Outliers change based on the data set, so we need to look at each data set (season 1, season 2, and series) individually and not assume that an outlier for one season would also be an outlier for the series). 

What happens when you remove the outliers?

That brings us to the above question. Is Owen’s 20+ minutes in the first episode the reason why his time is so high in season 1? Is his 1 minute in 2x09 bringing down his time in season 2? And what about the series?

I’m not sure if it’s worth examining how the totals are affected since that’s pretty self-explanatory. Obviously all the totals will go down if you take out the outlier episodes. But where it makes a difference as far as we’re concerned is the averages. 

Obviously the average number is how much you should expect to see that character during an episode. But if 20 minutes is much higher than normal, and 1 minute is much lower than normal, then what happens when you take out those numbers? Well, something actually fairly interesting happens, that almost contradicts what I said before about the progress...

When you remove the pilot episode from the data set for season 1, the average comes to around 9:15. When you remove 2x09 from the data set for season 2, the average comes to around 9:15. When you remove both episodes from the series data set the average comes to (you guessed it) 9:15. 

9:15 is more indicative of what to expect for Owen’s screen time in an average episode, and since it hasn’t changed that says a lot about the progress we’ve seen for screen time distribution.

Now as for what to do with this? Honestly, I have no idea. I mean the fact is that while these episodes are outliers, they did still happen. There is an episode where Owen only had about a minute of screen time; just like there’s an episode where he got over 20 minutes. Outliers are weird because I don’t want to not acknowledge them, and I think it’s important to look at when studying the screen time as a whole. But as for the reported numbers, we can stick with what is laid out in the infographic.

Closing Thoughts

It’s hard to say whether this season saw less Owen, or about the same. Of course when taking all episodes into account, it is less. But when you remove the outlier one minute episode, it’s really not that much better. But then again, the fact that we did get an episode where he was only on screen for a minute is a very good sign, so taking it out of the data set doesn’t exactly make sense.

I guess the biggest takeaway still is that Owen still has a lot. He always will. Even if he did have less this season, it’s still much more than the characters who come in second and third had. I like to think it will get better, and maybe it will, but personally I’ve accepted that Owen will always have the most, and he will have much more than other characters, but it shouldn’t be as much as it is. Hopefully his screen time will continue to trend down and allow for more time to explore the other characters on the show.

ok so this is the brain child of me processing a bunch of stuff from my old school while listening to queer country music and so I just took a bunch of inspiration from my own experiences and people that I knew and made it gayer and more dramatic 👁

so it’s set in this small town in the southern united states in a super conservative town and I have the main characters set up into 3-4 groups based on age (I have so many I might turn it into several short stories focusing on a few characters each? idk yet) and all of them went to the religious school in town and the ages of the characters range from like 15-21 I think??

i’m probably only going to go through the oldest ones since this is super long ajdkdlsksk so the first group is the ones who are like 21 ish and its laynie, caroline, owen, anika, thea, and charity.

laynie and caroline were best friends as kids and had a huge falling out in middle school because laynies mom was super controlling and mean and they spent high school hating each other. they went to separate colleges but over the summer when they are home they end up together at a party and just talk the whole time and become friends again. owen had a bunch of mental health issues during high school and moved out at 17 to new york. he found an amazing group of friends and became a drag queen. the thee of them end up in a poly relationship together after laynie and caroline stay with owen for a little bit while laynies aunt who she was super close with was in the hospital.

anika and thea have an enemies to lovers thing going. thea is charity’s best friend and they were like the super good religious girls in school whereas anika is this amazing soft butch artist saving up to go to art school. they hated each other in school but then got together after the graduated since neither of them went to college right away but they kept it a secret because ya know being in a sapphic relationship in a small town is not where it’s at😐 they end breaking up and staying good friends when anika leaves for art school but it’s super happy because they both figure out where they need to be in life and right now it’s not together, right person wrong time sort of deal.

as for charity, she is the classic ‘dated the same guy through all high school married right after graduation and then stays as a stay at home mom for the rest of her life’. she has crazy religious parents and never really had any other options she’s the third of ten kids and it’s insane. anyways her story is about figuring out her identity and finding a home in the queer community. also she kills her husband and that’s super cool (he deserves it).

the last one i’m going to go through is mimi and claudia, who are a lesbian couple in their like sixties. they own this super cute bakery/cafe/coffee shop in town and they used to live in nyc but ended up there for claudias family. I love them. after charity’s husband dies of ‘natural causes in his sleep’ she gets a job at their shop and they tough love her through her queer journey. I love them so much queer wine aunts basically

the other ones are all siblings or cousins of these ones and have a study group that ends up meeting at claudia and mimis! thank you so much for letting me ramble about them🥺

tell me about "i'll be good"?

this is probably my oldest wip tbh, and i genuinely love it, i’m just not sure i’m competent enough to write it haha.

the title comes from jaymes young’s song of the same name, which is also part of my inspiration for this one. the song always reminded me of cassian so this is a very cassian-centric piece, but still with heavy rebelcaptain. it’s a bit dark too tbh.

the setting is an undercover mission, which at this point i feel i have done to death, but back when i was outlining this, i hadn’t written one yet. anyway, i was imagining a masquerade, they’re playing a married couple, typical stuff. jyn makes a move but he turns her down, believing that her feelings are only influenced by the mission (also a concept i have since then explored lmao) but when they finally hash it out a few days later, she assures him that’s not the case and they have sex.

this is where my uncertainty comes in because it’s a sensitive topic and idk if i can do it justice, or if i should even try? but basically, first and foremost, this fic was inspired by a grey’s anatomy storyline from season 5 with cristina and owen, when owen falls asleep and is triggered by the moving fan on the ceiling and he ends up choking cristina while he’s unconscious. accidentally hurting each other and then dealing with that guilt is a topic i was intrigued with anyway (i had a similar idea of jyn accidentally shooting cassian) so this au came to me immediately when i watched that episode, but again, it’s sensitive and maybe i shouldn’t mess with it. so i never finished it. at this point, i’m not sure i like the undercover aspect of it anyway. i had grand ideas of doing a character study for cassian but.... i just don’t think this is ever gonna be written.

Definitely would be so much worth when he'd play the gardener like so many things wouldn't make any sense at all. And I mean then Jamie would take his role? Or she wouldn't be there at all? That would be such a nightmare 😅 so I'm glad they changed that and brought us this wonderful female gardener 💚

And so true, if he would be Dani's love interest it wouldn't have such an personal impact to me, too. 

Yeah after the thing Rebecca said, I was expecting something to happen but like it was a creepy moment for sure. I had a heart attack but then I realized it's just Peter getting chocked so all good 😂

Watching it the first time I was feeling down for so long 😪 and even now, same here, I cry every time I see the end or just a bit of it...and same, the ending song, I Shall Believe, is so sad just by listening to it, my whole body aches. It's a terrible feeling. And I'm sure that no other show will ever have such a traumatic impact on me

Omg me too! I have expected so much more to come from him as an actor. Like he was great in Orphan Black but there...idk not really hit it for me

Older Owen was one of the very few times that I feel the casting got it wrong. Or maybe that’s more to do with the actor and his delivery, I’m not that entirely sure. Cause when he first spoke, I get that the idea is to come off as this... Dad Vibe Dude, but my general impression was very much “who the hell is this dude and why is he like this?” And an addendum that if he’s actively encouraging Flora and her hubbub to be to “do drugs on a beach in Bali”... IDK which version of Bali he went to.

A Bly without Amelia as Jamie is at this point very very unimaginable. I’m really so glad that they went in the direction that they did. There was a point in Collider Ladies Night with Victoria, where the interviewer said something similar about OJC and Amelia, and Victoria agreed, too. I’m happy that the cast and crew are happy with the result tbh; at least from the snippets of quips I’ve seen around, anyway.

The thing with that song is how soft the lyric is. I remember when I first heard it, it was... god, about 20 years ago when I was in Middle School. It was on a random MP3 CD we used to buy as a way of “discovering” songs. My shock when it was playing in the final episode... lol. Instant throwback to the youthful days of yore + crying. There’s something to be said in that scene, too. How everyone stood close to other people (Owen next to Miles, Flora dancing with Henry), and then. There’s Jamie. Standing there with a glass of champagne, and no one else, and just... watching. 

On to Steven: you hit the nail on the head. I can see him in his physicality of embodying that Crain trait, but whatever it was that he was trying to do, it wasn’t really working for me and the whole thing just felt like it landed in the middle of nowhere. I can’t relate to him, I can’t build any kind of connection with him whatsoever. Even his reaction when he first saw Nell’s corpse for the first time in the funeral home felt really off, and then when he spat out to Hugh that “the wrong parent died”, I’m like... 😶“OK.” Teenager Steven I was ok with, but the adult one... Every time he’s on screen, I was nonplussed.

And thanks for the kind words! I’ve wanted to study culinary arts for so long, but only had the chance to get everything together at the beginning of the year. So I’m excited to really get it going and not having to depend on theory classes being delivered online and being stuck literally thousands of miles away from where my campus is.

how about a ramble on one of your fave aus for one of your characters?

okay i want to preface this by saying that it took me awhile to decide what i wanted to do for this ask, and at one point i had like a list of options that i could potentially try to expand on

and also that a few years ago on denny, we had a huge… like, site-wide au that spawned from like a throwaway joke about my character (alana) being a veterinarian? and soon lots of people were like, connecting their characters to this setting until we had an entire like… denny normal world au on our hands that was surprisingly a ton of fun to play with. everyone got involved and got to take their characters out of their varied heightened settings to kind of explore what they’d be like if they lived a more normal life and how certain things would translate and it was just!! a lot of fun!!

so one of my options for this ask was a grey’s anatomy au which is something i’ve talked a bit about with @numinousbones anyway in the past and something i have a huge soft spot for and then i realized. not only does something like this lend itself really well to a panfandom setting, but it’s also kinda reminiscent of that dumb old veterinarian au. so i tried to think up some stuff that incorporated various people’s high muse characters in a number of ways! obviously if anyone else takes a liking to this they can feel free to alter what i’ve thought up for their characters OR just come up with stuff for characters i haven’t mentioned

so first i wanted to start with a core group of interns, like MAGIC (meredith/alex/george/izzie/cristina) in the first 5 seasons of grey’s. basically this is just a group of characters who start out training at the hospital as a group, under the same resident doctor. they grow and learn and compete together and ultimately become a kind of found family unit.  i went through a few character combinations for this and then decided i really liked dolores, laurel, lee, dev, and cloud for an au of this. partially because they’re characters we’re all really into right now (even if dev’s not on denny yet), and partially because, well, it’s a combination that lends itself well to a lot of shipping drama, true to grey’s anatomy form,

so lee and dev are kind of the on again, off again couple. they hit it off right from the start and are pretty obviously into each other, but it mostly manifests through brief hookups and stuff at first. both of them are a liiittle afraid of commitment and also. they’re here to become kickass doctors and their ambition should take priority over a longterm relationship. right? anyways everyone at the hospital knows they’re a thing, they’re just never sure when lee and dev are “on” and when they’re “off”. some of the attendings are infamously exhausted by this drama,

laurel and dolores are more like. the “will they or won’t they” couple that kills everyone because they take SEASONS to get together. it takes them ages to even realize they have feelings and then ages longer to do anything about it. they probably run into traditional obstacles to cause drama like finding other brief love interests, getting into fights over stuff, etc. it’s painfully obvious to lee and dev but nobody wants to risk the dynamic of their friend group by throwing it out into the open

cloud escapes the shipping drama (for now) but he still goes through a lot with the rest of them and also, after his first year as an intern, maybe he latches onto studying under an attending in the specialty he wants to go into, aka sophie. they develop a nice rapport and a pretty great mentor/apprentice relationship, maybe something a la alex and addison in the early years of grey’s, but then if you wanted to be mean you could translate cloud’s geostigma arc into… cloud getting sick with something else (because there’s Always a storyline on grey’s where one of the doctors gets sick, someone should run a health check on this hospital) and he and sophie try to like, keep it on the downlow for awhile while they try to help him. at some point the rest of the friend group finds out and are predictably upset,

i was thinking of which character could work as the resident who trains the original group of interns (like bailey does in the show) and for some reason lin hu just struck me as perfect for it? maybe because he’s so grumpy. imagine him trying to wrangle lee/dev/dolores/laurel/cloud and all their drama. also he probably has a friendly(ish) rivalry with another attending (ammy) and some kind of romance arc with shu-chi and kulau, who. hmm. maybe they’re his rivals who hold high positions at other hospitals? but then they all slowly fall for each other,

then as the au goes on and the interns work their way up to being full time residents, you could bring in a NEW group of interns which could be like… mike and some of the other kid characters on the site maybe? i feel like we need to work max into this au too. but anyway, mike gets assigned to cloud probably, and gets a lot of those “reckless baby interns causing shenanigans” storylines. i also had the sad/sweet thought that maybe you could bring eleven in as a patient at some point (not with anything too serious because we don’t want to make this like, an izzie/denny scenario, we’re not that mean), but with something that would require her staying at the hospital for a little while and she and mike could fall for each other? and mike could get a lecture from some older doctor about falling for patients and get all defiant about it,

i like the idea of shiro as this like. brilliant, established, charismatic attending. kind of like mcdreamy, but nicer. everyone kinda looks up to him. but i also threw shades of owen into this idea – no ngl, i just took some of owen’s character concept and applied it to a better character. that is to say, i feel like shiro would work as like… a former army medic or something who now works as a surgeon, and he’s really good at what he does and has great bedside manner and is really charming and reassuring with everyone, but beneath that he has layers of trauma he doesn’t really deal with. maybe sara could be like? the teddy to his owen? like they were old Army Buddies and maybe she comes to the hospital at some point because her sister works there and snagged her a job and then she and shiro have to work through some old shit. he’s finally cornered by someone who knows he suppresses things!,

on that note i was trying to figure out how to fit the legends in… idk what they would work better as. a ragtag group of army medics? or like a paramedic/emergency response team who get to go onto the scene of an accident or disaster and try to help people regularly? or maybe they could be something like firefighters? idk they feel like they’d work better as something more hands-on like that

lastly it occurred to me that death should be given the obvious position of “old guy who works in the hospital morgue”. he’s notoriously grumpy and sometimes vaguely creepy but on occasion he gets really poignant moments with other characters who are struggling to deal with like, a patient they’ve lost, or another character who gets killed off (as if that would ever happen in a GREY’S ANATOMY au!)

anyway. those are some basic concepts. despite this being a “normal au” you could expect to throw your characters at a lot of like… natural disasters and sudden high stakes stuff and virtually anything that would cause drama because that’s what grey’s is all about!

i didn’t get much into like… what each character would specialize in. or what their backstories in this world would be, although i was really tempted to. but i think this post is long enough and hopefully you had fun listening to me paint just like, a broad picture of some people’s characters!

Oh RIght I saw Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom tonight :)

despite what seems like an overwhelming majority of people disliking the film, (or at most thinking its just okay) I actually... liked it more... than the first.

Jurassic World 1 negativity warning (I liked it, I didn’t like the characters)

I liked the first one, but that’s just about it. I liked it for the dinos and fun action, but how much I hated the characters really put a damper on it for me. Also, it was a solid story, but it wasn’t anything really unique IMO.  Run dino park, big dino gets out, big dino causes a problem, gotta get to safety and take care of the big dino. it was Jurassic Park with some modern rehashing. Which is fine.

But like.. I hated the teenagers, I fuckin hated Claire, I hated Owen, jesus.

I hated that they established Claire and Owen dated in the past and it didn’t work out but they go through the adventure of the film together and they kiss because... idk..? They didn’t have romantic chemistry at all as far as I could tell. I rewatched it recently and was like “yeah well when you guys try to live together your old problems are gonna come up again because you both established you find the other insufferable, but I guess that’s all out the window because you ran from dinosaurs together..”

as for the plot of this movie... I liked it!  I think I could have done without another man-made superweapon dino BUT i accepted it because using trained dinosaurs as weapons was established in the last movie and was simply brought back and expanded upon in this one in a way that I thought made sense.  The mega villain dramatically-lit dino facility built under the mansion was cheesy as hell tho but whatever

The girl being a clone was also cheesy as hell and a little unnecessary plot-wise but.. sure. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me go “o shit :0″ while watching.

(Dunno where to put this thought, but the scene where Claire and Owen are trying to convince the girl to get out of the dumbwaiter... they couldn’t do or say anything else to come off more trustworthy? All I could think of was how suspicious their body language and tone was while they were trying to get her to come with them.)

I also loved the action, it was more monster-movie than action-movie and I personally thought it was an extremely interesting change of tone

and.. i liked the characters!!!

I loved the two new characters, the computer guy and the animal medic girl, I thought they were hilarious. 

and Claire and Owen didn’t bother me as much this time!

i hated the speech at the end, it took me out of it a bit. Made it seem like this was supposed to be some cautionary tale directed at paleontologists studying dinosaur dna now. You know whenever theres an article or something about scientists modifying chicken dna to study dinosaur body structure and theres a million chuckleheads who think they’re unique going “HavEnT YoU SeEn JurAsSic ParK???? We KnOW hOw ThIs EnDs Hyuk hyuk hyuk hyuk” in the comments which drive me up the fuckin wall like you wouldn’t believe

14x19–– Beautiful Dreamer [episode review]

can we talk about Grey’s here for a second? I’m gonna review this episode because it’s been a really great episode. I think one of the best we’ve seen in a long time. so lets start off with saying this: I am sorry for how unorganized and choppy this is going to be, I’m apologizing in advance but my brain is going a million miles an hour. ALSO. WARNING::: SPOILERS AHEAD!!! 🚨🚨

first off–– Richard and Ollie

this was so, so sad. this gave me Amelia and Michelle, on PP, parallel feels, how Ollie is much like Amelia’s best friend Michelle and Amelia and Richard both watched their friend die a slow death. I really think and hope this is going to bring Amelia and Richard closer as friends and support systems. this storyline (Richard and Ollie) was very real, heartbreaking and sad. I really liked it even though it was rough.

Arizona

two things here, first; Carina. I just. I don’t like her. it’s half “she’s never going to be callie” and half idk I just don’t like her character. she’s useless and just no. I really don’t like her. and I would really like for her to go back to Italy. like Arizona said, her study there is almost up… also, the comment at the beginning of the ep “I have no kids, thank god” like okay, I get that people don’t always like kids but coming from Arizona, someone who broke up with her girlfriend over children, this just made my heart swell. like carina you don’t say that to the person you’re with if they fucking have kids. thats like almost as close as basic human decency as we get here…and second; Arizona’s idea of the crash cart thing, that was amazing. seriously. “treat every delivery as a trauma” I can’t clap loud enough. this is amazing. I’m so glad she figured something out and she can stop stressing just a little bit. take a breather babes, you’re awesome, you’re a rockstar. [also, another note; I really am dreading JCap leaving and this is sad af, because we only have like what 3 episodes remaining?]

Bello and Deluca

I actually have a lot to say about this and this is where its going to get very unorganized. I love that they’re incorporating real life like this, fucking neurosurgeons in the making, who have been living here their whole lives, facing deportation to a country they don’t know just because of our terrible choice in leaders. I can talk a while about this but I’m not going to. I thoroughly enjoyed Bailey stalling the ICE agent [we will address this later] and how literally the whole hospital was banning together to help Bello out. I genuinely like her and I’m really sad to see her leaving. I loved all the scenarios of running, getting married, Jo telling her how to fake her death with a guy in New York, I actually laughed so hard. like this was so great. this whole storyline. and then when amelia asks Owen to call Megan to help out because her “favorite intern” is going to get deported for rUNNING A FUCKING RED LIGHT. A RED LIGHT PEOPLE. we can’t even put rapists in jail, and you’re exiling an innocent fucking surgeon to a country they spent barely a year in when they were born, because she ran a red fucking light? okay moving on, coco. I loved that amelia said that, it was really cute. and like then Meredith using one of Maggie’s old papers [im assuming] and telling her Sam got accepted in Zurich and is working with Cristina. that was actually so sweet and I can’t. and then poor Andrew. I really loved them as a couple. they are really sweet and I wish we got to know more about their story, but sadly we won’t since Bello left. their goodbye was so adorable and bitter sweet. I hope she comes back one day or Deluca leaves to go be with her, he deserves happiness and an actual storyline like this because Giancomo is kinda getting screwed with Deluca’s character here.

Jaggie…

as @jordan202​ said last week, “jaggie is gaggie” and literally, yes. I was really excited to see Maggie ignoring him, because Jackson can be kinda dickish and like he should’ve told her April kissed him. if you want a relationship to work, be honest. and Jackson should’ve told her from the beginning. now to be honest with you, I skipped every jaggie scene, and caught the little bit at the end. I did want to point out, while I do not support Jaggie at all whatsoever, I find it very sweet Maggie showed up and made the speech and stood up for herself about not telling her because she said Jackson didn’t think he could handle it. go Maggie. and then I gagged again and skipped the scene that followed that… gross.

the interns

okay I love love loveeeee seeing Jo be the chief resident [I mean not like there can be any other chief resident because lets see, mousey died, Stephanie left, ben became a firefighter and where the fuck did Leah disappear to?] anyway, I love seeing Jo be the chief res and then bringing the interns around for rounds and no one letting them into rooms for rounds, that was actually quite funny.

Matthew and Ruby

okay, so I feel bad for Arizona because this was her case, but I empathize with Matthew, and he’s hurting and this is a lot. and I’m glad Owen could be put on this case, tho really fucking weird since he worked as a trauma surgeon in the army I didn’t peg him for a peds stand in, but I know this was just a little veer in his path for his storyline [which we will talk about as well] and I’m really grateful for April here. I know that everyone kinda looked weird at her for leering around Matthew and yeah I get it its weird, but her mother’s intuition was calling, and hey, guess what, it was fucking right. I’m really glad she was able to help and the end scene with her and Matthew was really sweet. it was full circle for them and I really enjoyed that.

lets go with the ICE agent next, and Bailey.

so I thoroughly enjoy that Bailey was at first just trying to stall him as long as possible. great tactic. and then her instincts kicked in and she pretty much saved this man’s life. I think that was really cool. and the scene with Maggie telling Bailey that she’d run all the tests, and then Bailey actually being serious about it. this was really nice. Bailey was being sincere to this man, she was serious because this guy, who is trying to take her intern, she could’ve easily just ignored his symptoms. but she didn’t and telling him, jfc that was great. “I swear to god this isn’t a joke” or whatever. bailey’s being serious, might I even say as serious as a heart attack… [okay, okay, I know, terrible joke I am sorry] anyway, this was really sweet that even though she deemed him as the enemy, she stilled helped save his life because its her job, just like, while he hates it, being an ICE agent is his job.

um what’s next? ou, Catherine.

can I start out saying I’ve never liked her? she’s always fucking shady and untrusting. seriously. and first off, do not go blaming your fucking son for this issue with the neurosurgeon lady. this is your fault. your “oh its nothing” thing with harper Avery and this lady. well yeah, we’re gonna think its nothing if you say it like that, of course Jackson won’t think anything of it and try and fucking fix things, there’s a child’s life at stake. if you weren’t such a shady bitch and were honest with Jackson, y’all won’t be getting into this mess, whatever the fuck it may be. ugh I do not like Catherine at all. Richard deserves better.

um, who else… Owen okay Owen.

so, I am still logically confused why Owen was placed on ruby Taylor’s case… like I mentioned before, he’s trauma not peds, but whatever, I guess if a hospital can have a bomb, shooting, 2 plane crashes, a fire and a billion other things happen, I guess a trauma surgeon can double as a peds one for a day. now, onto why. I’m really actually genuinely excited for Owen to take this step into singlehood and hopefully soon-to-be single fatherhood. I’ve been saying this forever, but give the man a child. he’s very similar to Alex in a way, he doesn’t act very decent with other adults, but in front of children, he’s an angel and its what he really needs. I can’t wait to see what comes of this storyline!

okay, wow! this breaks my heart. part of me is like “yes! go to NYC, go sing on broadway, explore the world while you still have the chance” and the other half of me just screams “stay strong just a little longer and stay at GSM for Alex and amelia to fix you, because I know they can”. okay, we got literally the sweetest scene I’ve ever fucking seen. I think I like this more than the proposal. actually, this and the 9x24 “I love you” scene are tied for first because ofc, that was my fave but also this one was. Jo telling Alex that she wants kids with him and wants to wedding plan and get married at joe’s bar and soon and ugh I cannot. and then her telling him she wants his last name because “I’ve never had the last name of anyone who’s loved me before” okay get out. bye. I’m dead. spoiler alert: I’ve been typing this from beyond the grave. this scene fucking melted me into a pile of goo. I cannot. bye!

FINAL CABIN PLACEMENTS I DON'T WANT TO EDIT IT AFTER THIS

So many of y'all had so many good ideas (and since a lot of these i came up with without any real reasoning) here's my updated version that i think fits A LOT better

#1 Zeus Cabin: Jimmy, Joel Jimmy: He's a Zeus kid, but everyone somehow forgets about it. Joel: He's competitive and strong. Also, because Jimmy is his half brother through godly parent, i get to make a fun bit about him dating Lizzie. And one of his origins in Afterlife SMP was a thunderborn

#2 Hera Cabin: Scott, Impulse, Ren Scott: Scott's whole thing is loyalty. Hera is the goddess of marriage and is insanely loyal to Zeus. However, I feel like Hera should get at least one affair. So now Scott can use peacocks as weapons. Impulse: According to @dawnfire7 Impulse is known for loyalty, which i did not know. He's also known to hold grudges. Perfect Hera kid. Ren: He's apparently known for loyalty (and i didn't really like his Nike placement anyway)

#3 Poseidon Cabin: XB XB: Something about water temple guardians

#4 Demeter Cabin: Sausage, Shelby, Bdubs, Stress Sausage: This man built Sanctuary in a jungle and has flowers in his hair. He sells wood. There is no other place to put him. Shelby: Mushroom gnome, spooky mangrove witch, powerful storm witch, i need not continue. Bdubs: Moss man. Stress: SHE HAS FLOWERS

#5 Ares Cabin: Martyn, False Martyn: His planet is Mars, which is the roman version of Ares. He ended Limited Life in such a violent way, i can't help it. He was also red for the majority of Secret Life. False: I just feel like False should get to kill people more often.

#6 Athena Cabin: Grian, Pix, Owen, Xisuma Grian: This sums it up pretty well

Pix: Smart man. Archeologist and definitely a nerd. I wanna see him skipping out on training just so he can read history books. Owen: He likes to explore and discover new things in Pirates. In Rats, he's a tinkerer. In New Life, he's an explorer who wants to study hybrids. In Empires, he's a Llama who's curious about how humans work. Just a very curious character overall. Xisuma: Admin. I'm not elaborating.

#7 Apollo Cabin: Oli, Lyarrah Oli: MUSIC. MAN. Lyarrah: She writes the captions for the hermitcraft recap.

#8 Artemis Cabin: Pearl, Gem Pearl: Y'know, Artemis could've just like... had a kid, even though she took that oath. It wouldn't even have to be with a guy. Gods can change to whatever gender they want. Anyway, Pearl gets to be an Artemis kid because her symbolism is moon, she loves dogs, and will commit murder and hunt at night. Gem: Someone really wanted these girls to be sisters, and I think Gem and pearl should get to hunt at night and be fierce together. Oh, and she's got the whole deer aesthetic.

#9 Hephaestus Cabin: Doc, Mumbo, Tango, Zedaph, Fwhip, Iskall Doc: Redstone Mumbo: Redstone Tango: Redstone Zedaph: Redstone Fwhip: Redstone AND has a red scarf (don't ask me how that's relevant) Iskall: Redstone

#10 Aphrodite Cabin: Keralis, Skizz, Bigb Keralis: Okay, I don't know why, but Keralis gives me the vibes of a very charming person. His voice is nice to listen to, so imagine how useful it'd be if I gave him charm speak. Skizz: Person in the tags said he was really charming and you can't help but love him. I agree. He's here now. Bigb: Smooth talker. Someone (i think it was Scott) said in one of their videos "It's hard to kill him while he's talking". Charmspeak. Ma man, go do chaos.

#11 Hermes Cabin: Scar, Etho, Joe Scar: Trader Scar, scammer extraordinar. Etho: All i must say is Shady-E's. I get "jack-of-all-trades, master of none, often better than master of one" vibes from him. He's funny, he's mischievous, it just works. Joe: Comedy man. Excellent delivery. And, yet again, i look at this man and go "That right there is a multi-talented man with a habit for mischief."

#12 Dionysus Cabin: Joey, Beef, Cub Joey: *points at his season one empires theme* i need not say more Beef: Idk, food. I don't really have a reason. I don't know too much about Beef. Cub: Someone said Cub was really laid back, i liked this idea, he's here now. C'mon, go make ur empire.
