but yeah beyond that, despite how much i love the character, caleb really didn’t develop much of an actual au

there was maybe slightly more plot in tbe xover with my musician lc bastard? that tbh I don’t even think of as existing in a different universe he’s always caleb’s roommate to me in my head even tho he never developed a name

but there wasn’t much if there was anything at all

so yeah there was never really a plot there lol

I am surprised the Blades handbook doesn't include any lore about queerness in the Duskvol setting, at least outright. I think you can kind of infer some stuff, for example they have female Bluecoats and academics mentioned so there seems to be some level of gender equality beyond the real life Victorian era which might relate to more flexibility with gender norms, and from the descriptions in the book you could probably imagine that some districts like maybe Silkshore or maybe Six Towers or the Docks would be where the queer quarter would be found, but there hasn't been anything outright that I can see. It kind of makes sense, like leaving it open for players to choose their own level of queernorm or not for the stories they want to tell, but it would be fun to have a little to work off of I feel.

Nightwing, Red Hood, Red Robin, Spoiler, Batgirl, all hug their teams after missions, check in, make sure they’re fine, because its what Bruce would do, what Batman did, after a rough patrol, or a difficult mission, he’d crush them close, ensure their safety, check in afterwards because maybe the mission was a little harsher and more trying so Bruce was a little more bitchy and he just wants to check in, make sure they’re good, make sure his kids are okay, that they’re safe, and the League sees this happen and is like “where did crime lord Red Hood learn this?” to just hug his teammates after battle? Weird. And then they all are like- “wait batman doesn't hug yall after battle?” And the League is like “wtf no????” and yeah…

I just want the kids to be the tadest bit oblivious to the fact that their Batman is also their Dad and is not the League’s Batman.

As I see the spitting flames in the distance,

Sitting on my front porch.

I pull up a manual in my mind;

HOW TO COMFORT A FIRE

I know it front-to-back,

No need to pull the old yellowed copy from my nightstand.

It was a necessity.

It was survival.

It is obsessive.

STEP ONE:

MAKE SURE YOU WEAR HEAT PROTECTION.

YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO GET BURNED FROM THE PROXIMITY.

I suit up in my worn firesuit,

Preparing for the worst to come

And knowing that I'll still feel the seeping warmth.

STEP TWO:

KNOW WHERE THE CORE OF THE FLAMES BEGAN.

IF YOU HAVE A GOOD IDEA OF THAT,

YOU CAN KNOW WHERE TO START.

What was the still-lit cigarette thrown from the car window?

STEP THREE:

STEP FOUR:

TAKE THE LAKE IN YOUR SOUL AND POUR IT OUT.

ONLY POUR A BIT AT A TIME,

YOU DON'T WANT TO OVERBURDEN THE FIRE WITH A FIGHT TO STAY LIT.

Pour a bit out at a time.

Don't make the fire fight to stay live.

Don't make the fire sputter with the smothering water.

Let it burn a bit to feel the spreading warmth...

... I think that's enough.

Blinks of panic move through bone marrow,

Sluggish from smoke inhalation.

My house.

It's going to burn my house down if I don't take care.

The last step blinks in my mind like neon;

STEP FIVE:

YOU CAN BURN OR YOU CAN DOUSE THE FLAMES. IT WILL DESTROY YOU. IT WILL KILL YOU. IT WILL BURN EVEN YOU. YOU ARE NOT SAFE FROM THE DESTRUCTION. IT WILL BURN EVEN YOU.

It will burn even me.

It will burn you too.

Run to the house and soak it all.

Save what you can,

And remember to make a note in the margins:

REMEMBER YOU CANNOT COMFORT A FIRE,

NOT WITHOUT LOSING MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD.
