Just me and my reflections on Shikatema

I've been weirdly hyperfixated recently on Shikamaru and Temari, and so I reflected a lot just to properly dissect the reasons myself because I initially couldn't really understand why I liked them when I was really young, more so as an adult (and as demi/ace) LOL so imma yap

As a demi, I've always struggled with romance themes. I always subtly feel like my circuits are frying when I watch anything romance or I often just plainly feel indifferent. Thankfully I managed to spot a few patterns by spending a lot of time in my head; one of them is that I prefer romance when it's not under the spotlight (idk I noticed I always prefer the side pairs more than the main pairs in any story HAHA) I guess that was one of the categories that Shikatema falls under.

I spent more than a decade watching/reading Naruto and it was enough time for me to have a close affinity with these characters and love them for creating such a huge impact in my childhood without the heavy emotional flairs that Naruto and the rest of characters put upfront. They ultimately became my two favorite characters in the series because I share the same traits and tendencies as them. It also wasn't a surprise that two of my favorite characters ended up together because their relationship was slowly developed and it didn't come off like shocking news.

Unlike the other pairs in Naruto where it seems to have characters fixating on someone or characters overshadowing the other, Shikatema operate on a level playing field. They're each strong leaders and strategists in their own right, both competent enough to recognize each other's strengths. They don't feel the need to change the other nor prove their worth. They're their own person and it clearly shows early in the series and even as it progresses to Shippuden.

I personally dislike being the center of anyone's attention or constantly feeding someone attention so I gravitate more to people who are deeply more passionate about purpose/duty/service/something more than about me and my presence. Shikatema has that dynamic where their relationship feels more like a partnership than a romance based on dependency. They both have important (political) roles in their own respective villages, and they know their purposes and the weight that they carry very well—which prolly explains why both are self-sufficient, independent, and capable. They both take their duties seriously and you don't see a scene where one craves for the other's attention (it’s funny how actively and arduously they work on their duty while in each other’s presence so you can definitely say they were literally there for (and with) each other as they fulfilled their roles as diplomat escort/advisor and diplomat/royalty)

Another that I value DEEPLY to my core is individuality, and I've always adored how Shikamaru and Temari preserve their individuality while still thriving together. It's one of the main factors why they see each other as equals and why none of them overpowers the other.

Shikamaru, laid-back and often understated, complements Temari’s directness and assertiveness. His relaxed demeanor helps her stay grounded and objective rather than just taunting in combat or in general LMFAO

Meanwhile, Temari, who is confident and comfortable taking charge, gives Shikamaru's abilities more buoyancy—she openly calls out his BS and he welcomes it because he knows how unassuming, and, at times, self-deprecating he can be. He never seeks the spotlight and often downplays his own abilities and it's where Temari's outspokenness fits the bill (this energy is also quite evident in Shikamaru Hiden)

Both characters also challenge gender norms (I'm inclined to believe that their characters' subtle sexism when they were first introduced in the series was part of the writing, there is an active discussion about this somewhere and I genuinely believe it has its purpose) Young Shikamaru yaps about her being too troublesome because she's incessantly outspoken/spunky. Young Temari yaps about him being too emotional because he didn't seem to receive emotional training.

Yet in the long run, Shikamaru's honesty and vulnerability allow Temari to soften up and witness the act of kindness by someone who wears his heart on his sleeve (which was first seen during the Sasuke retrieval arc at the hospital where Shikamaru had an emotional breakdown) and Temari's unwavering strength and energy nudges Shikamaru into action when he might otherwise hesitate (Temari often banters with him to make him commit to his decisions and not spend too much time in his head)

Both characters also have innate leadership. I noticed that one of my main attraction points is leadership (as an act of service girlie) and these two have that strong nature: Shikamaru leads with his introspective nature, while Temari leads with her assertive nature.

It was evident first during the Chunin exams when they were pitted against each other—both read their opponents exceptionally well and they both show a strong sense of battle awareness while keeping their cool and executing their strategies effectively. It's no surprise that Shikamaru was promoted Chunin and Temari was promoted Jonin & Ambassador (it wasn't clear when Temari was promoted, but in the early episodes of Shippuden, she was already a Jonin & Ambassador who frequently visits Konoha) They both learned to grow as leaders who first serve their people before themselves in their respective villages and it stretches further during the war arc where they serve not just people from their respective villages but the entire Alliance.

Both were also Chunin exam proctors, so ain't that great LOL I think it was one of the many factors why I never doubted their parenting (and Shikadai did grew up to be such a fine and disciplined shinobi with a strong moral code) Both did seem to question each other's parenting styles since Temari favors intense training while Shikamaru advocates leisure (which I believe is a great balance) but both parents have fostered Shikadai's agency; allowing him to come up with his own conclusions and decisions based on his critical thinking because both Shikamaru and Temari share the same values in their youth.

In the series, high intensity emotions are almost always present in every relationship but their relationship has a subdued nature—They don't need long stretches of dialogues to understand each other because all they needed was experiences, and a little observation and deduction.

They didn't need to prove their worth to each other (or to anyone honestly) because it's built on deep understanding rather than overt passion. Altho it had a different interpretation in the manga, both characters even agree that marriage is troublesome LOL (but welp)

Last one is that both are strategists. Chess is my sport and puzzles/tactical games that require mental effort has always been my comfort, I guess it's natural for me to gravitate to these two. (I like any strategic characters who also wear their heart on their sleeve)

They also approach strategy differently: Shikamaru’s intellect makes him highly logical and analytical, often relying on foresight to plan for every possible outcome. Temari is a decisive, action-oriented strategist; often has the courage to commit to a decision quickly. She also heavily thinks on the fly to understand an opponent's motive and naturally adapts.

This was again exhibited during the Chunin exams where Shikamaru's strategic skills allowed him to use his environment to his advantage while Temari displayed her adaptability and quick-thinking capabilities to counter Shikamaru's offenses since she's a heavy thinker herself.

Temari may not be as exceptionally creative as Shikamaru but she highly values intel, reason, and logic in order to come up with a counter. This was exactly the reason why her battle with Shikamaru was further stretched; up to the point where Shikamaru exhausted his chakra.

I deeply adore how both characters value planning, precision, and patience in combat while other characters in the story value power, tenacity, and speed. Irl, I value the same set of values as Shikatema in chess/games/puzzles and so I guess it’s no surprise. I get to just admire the intellectual aspect of their relationship where it allows them to not just connect emotionally but also challenge each other mentally in every screen time they had.

i knew with my pattern of fandom it was inevitable before i became obsessed with the og owners of the bodies. i was already highkey obsessed with shen jiu, but i knew it would be only a matter of time before i started to hyper fixate on og!shang qinghua, but man, when it hits, it hits me like a freight train lmfao

i'm thinking of three types i wanna explore

twin au's. already dipped my toes in it and i like twin aus. it's my normal go-to for this sort of thing lol

older brother og!shang qinghua. ngl, people sold me with their fanart LOL im a weak man to adorable fanart oki

adopted brother au: oki bear with me, but what if baby airplane just gets... dropped into pidw with no family and he gets adopted by one of his scummy canon fodder villains? no blood relations for reassurance (not that airplane gets all that much reassurance from blood relations) just some one who has no obligations to him, who airplane KNOWS has a shitty personality, choosing to adopt him and take care of him? get found family'd, idiot! i just love airplane being the family that someone actively CHOSE

oki so the next thing i need to consider is og!shang qinghua's personality, because lbr, the barebones we get from svsss is noootttt a lot lmfao (og!shang qinghua extra when?). butttt from what we do know, he's supposed to be the sort of person who would work for two bosses, backstabbing either one or both of them

there is actually the potential for og!shang qinghua to be a bit of a su xiyan in this regard 🤔because of the lack of information we have, it's possible he could have actually been a double agent working for cang qiong while pretending to work against it. im not sure i like this path, bc im ngl, i kinda like the characterization of him being a self-serving greedy worm (i have a weakness for characters who are like this okay). but it's worth considering. he could also be playing the game from all angles. cang qiong think he's infiltrating the northern desert on their behalf, mobei-jun thinks he's infiltrating cang qiong on his behalf, and ultimately, og!shang qinghua is 100% his own man who's backstabbing them all LOL

there's also the uncle of it all to consider. linguang-jun is the most viable ally for anyone who might want an upper hand against mobei-jun, and if og!shang qinghua is gutsy enough, he might consider working for him

there's also the possible iteration of him thats 100% cowardly victim who literally never had a choice in any of it and died pathetically after being betrayed by everyone. again, the lack of actual canon info about him makes this possible? and it wouldnt not match up with airplane's pattern with tragic villains. that said, im not a fan of this route bc frankly i'm here for villain-fucking, not for "he was actually the most uwu baby of them all!!!" but i gotta acknowledge the possibility of this category, to actually take into consideration og!shang qinghua's personality. if we think of airplane's pattern with villains tho, none of them are absolutely innocent or kind. shen jiu is undeniably a victim of his circumstances annnnnddddd he also tried to rape ning yingying, so clearly he's not a good dude

there is also a line in the novel where shen yuan says that "shang qinghua was written the same way as shen qingqiu", specifically with regards to being lustful. so it's very likely that og!shang qinghua is into brothels and sex and might be a bit of a horndog

so

with consideration to the above (and anything i forgot that people wanna remind me of because i have the memory of a peanut) the things i wanna consider for his personality are

self serving and greedy (personal preference but it's canon compliant so shhhh)

slutty in at least one way (very likely brothels considering the context and very likely hetero in those slutty ways)

a very good liar (a necessity of the position of a double agent)

good at logistics (thats how you become the an ding peak lord after all)

probably has a tragic backstory (as is airplane's penchant with canon fodder villains)

had a bad relationship with mobei-jun (otherwise canon events dont make sense lol)

alright then theres shipping thoughts to be had >:D bc im shipping scum and this is who i am inside

theres the obvious og!moshang and im definitely here for that, but my airplane x mobei jun obsession is currently consuming me from the inside out sooo lolol so very likely to do some ot3 shenanigans with them at the moment if anything, which works for aus where theyre not related, but since im crawling my way down the shang sibs rabbit hole (and im just not much of an incest shipper lol), i'll table that one for now

shen jiu is worth thinking about, put my slutty canon fodder villains together and see what happens >:D

liu qingge could be hot (also ot3 with liujiu cuz my obsessesion with liujiu is only matched by my moshang obsession LOL). definitely love pairing liu qingge with morally corrupt characters who make him scream "WHY DO I LIKE YOU?!?!?"

sha huling might be kinda hot ngl, i could see them scheming together and also og!shang qinghua resenting the fuck out of luo binghe that he's got the woman of his dreams on retainer and she aint even his main squeeze

wei qingwei is a particularly tantalizing option bc if he was also in charge of the rescue party in pidw, then theres the potential for og!shang qinghua (in contrast to our lil airplane) actually feeling super relieved to see him and developing a really cute "my hero" crush on him~ this is something i will definitely percolate on. might become my fav pick tbh bc the more i think about it, the more i like it >:D

luo binghe is also potential, tho it doesnt fizzle in my brain the same way that bingplane does lol. but i could see potential there

zhuzhi-lang would be pure cracky "i like these two characters so i think they should kiss" LOL. but bear with me, the terminally loyal zhuzhi-lang paired with the terminally disloyal og!shang qinghua equates to a lot of conflict and i am HERE for that oki like the sheer incomprehension of "why the fuck would you be loyal to them at the cost of yourself?? are you stupid?" vs "how can you be such disloyal scum??? what is wrong with you?" (except politer bc zhuzhi-lang lolol) is a combination of contrasting values that i adore to see in a ship

obvs theres airplane x og!shang qinghua and again, i'm here for that, but im currently in sibling au hell so i'll table that for later, but believe me that i see it

qi qingqi, look, my only justification for this one is "it would be hot" and i stand by it LOL

thus far, upon considering my options, i still think i like wei qingwei the most but thats mainly bc i have a canon basis to branch off of and while i love crack (clearly) i also like having a jumping off point. after that, i think it's a tie between zhuzhi-lang and sha hualing (those shang bros sure do love their demons LOL)

pretty big datv spoilers under the cut re: something that was recently datamined!!!

(i'm being negative about negativity, so, like, does that cancel out the negativity and make this post... positivity? not quite LMFAOOOO but whatever)

now idk if it's because im somewhat fixated on the shadow dragons rn or what but seeing the datamined 'confirmation' about the viper being the imperial divine just got a 'oh woaaahhh neve and the random venatori guy who wrote that one letter were on the right track' reaction out of me lmfao. it rly did not come as a surprise and i didnt expect to see people freaking out as much as they are right now. it's literally like:

me: i loved this being hinted at in-game, cool to see it somewhat confirmed even if that confirmation is cut content tons of people in the tag, fsr: bioware didnt MEAN for this bit of lore to exist!!!! they CUT OUT the confirmation and then were too LAZY to cut all of the hints out!!! (....hints that i definitely picked up on, btw! totally!)

like give me a breaaaak. for starters... this is admittedly pessimistic and kinda mean on my part - but i genuinely think at least half of the people riled up about this didnt gaf about the viper until the datamine dropped and are just pissed that they didn't pick up on the hints haha. i don't think they even knew about this theory until they had a reason to be outraged about it. but that aside.

we don't always need the 1 + 1 = 2 treatment with lore!!!! sometimes... confirmation... is intentionally omitted. sometimes the answer isn't spoonfed to us, and that's a very common choice that writers make. you might not like it but it's not necessarily the product of 'laziness'. (btw i can't believe people are so comfortable with calling devs lazy. but, again: That Aside...)

personally, i think bioware cut out the confirmation because they wanted to keep the emphasis on the viper successfully hiding his identity. keeping the element of mystery is intriguing and, on a meta level, they wanted us fans theorycrafting the same way that in-game characters do. (speaking from personal experience, the major hints that i got in my playthrough about the viper's status were through characters who were trying to work out his identity beyond being the leader of the shadow dragons.) and we did.....!!!! the literal reason why the cut confirmation was datamined IN THE FIRST PLACE was bc someone was looking into the game's data for more hints / theory fodder lol.

i do think it would've been amazing if it had a de facto confirmation, since it's been my standout fav veilguard theory (THE SHADOW DRAGONS ARE MY FAV FACTION THEY ARE NUMERO UNO I WILL NEVER SAY NO TO MORE SHADOWS CONTENT) - so i feel for the people bemoaning it as a missed opportunity (even though i can also see how exploring it sufficiently would be tricky, particularly given the minrathous vs treviso choice). but, in a lot of ways, i think if bioware had a fleeting confirmation of it and just moved right along, it would've been more disrespectful than not confirming it at all.

that's beside the point, though!!! my point is that the people acting like it's a defunct piece of lore all because of a datamine of the '= 2' part of the 1 + 1 are so deeply confusing like come on!!! go back to complaining about ancient elves or world-states or how x character should've made a cameo or w/e... leave the viper and his amazing lore out of this... </3 ;LGHFJKGF;LHKHGF

The fact she calls out to her mom when she is the one person who isn't gonna figure out a calm way to deal with this hurts, ouch. Even amongst all the hatred she has for her mom she still trusts her.

This line always stuck with me because of how insane it reads on the outside. She's 9! A whole 9! She's an infant what do you mean old! I guess it shows her toxic environment meant she was never allowed to act like a child and is bitter about it.

Hurts to read this. Clearly, they want to stop Rosa's abuse but don't know how. It's easy to judge them as cowards but realistically what can they do? Yell at Rosa who will then take it out on Maria more?

Honestly living on that island seems like abuser heaven so at least Jessica's parents aren't the worst, comparatively speaking. She has very limited contact with the outside world and every exit is very tightly controlled.

I think Natsuhi and Jessica is probably the only parent/child relationship in the game that probably would heal itself with time... they both understand what is going wrong but aren't sure how to fix it, and I think with Jessica going out of her parent's house soon she probably would have been able to understand her mother more and makeup once they saw each other again... it makes me a bit sad to think about how the tragedy made it impossible for that to happen.

Procrastinating heavyyyyy on my school work so they became my hyper fixation. And all of the books I’ve read are not available physically in my country so I got them on ✨illegal sites✨ didn’t spent single penny babe 😭

1 - Ok so I have 2 song fixations, first one is "Used to the Darkness" by Des Rocs and the other is "Morning Coffee" by Chevy and Nalba

For Used to the Darkness the specific verse is the chorus, it's a bit long for tumblr but I'll give my reasoning. I've always loved this kind of rock because it reminds me of the 90s rebellion kind of era and this verse strikes me as 'society has forced me down by its standards and is leaving me in the dust because I've "made a mistake", but I'm going to fight because my life hasn't started yet and I'm too young to simply give up'. Every time I hear that chorus it gives me a second wind of sorts and reminds me to just keep going, to keep being stubborn and to keep being me unapologetically.

For Morning Coffee there is no specific line because I resonate with the whole song lol. I'm a very big coffee addict, like I need coffee or tea every day to make it feel right. The reason being is that it's a small comfort treat to help me feel better especially when some days just aren't the best and I need a pick me up to feel better, even if it's a little bit. I listen to this every morning on my commute and every afternoon on the way back home, it's such a big comfort song that I keep on repeat.

2 - 6! (subtype sp) 3 - I love a good video essay! My favourite ones are a bit niche but I especially love SovietWomble's essay about "The Forest" because it's a deep dive critique and explanation of what happens when lore is added to a game post-release and why it's so important to develop it as a whole rather than doing it in bits as it can be the difference of an amazing or completely underwhelming experience. As someone who writes for fun and loves to play games soley for the lore sometimes, I found it useful to develop and hone my skills in world-building and making my stories more coherent. Also because he did a face reveal at the end BUT THAT'S BESIDES THE POINT!

4 - Gosh I haven't talked about my imaginary friend in a bit, her face evades me but I remember she would always help me sleep or play with me when no one else did (so everyday basically). She always wore a yellow dress and had her hair up in pigtails. I never gave her a name because she never needed one, I just called her 'friend', I miss her

5 - Put on a redacted audio vid and fall asleep to that lmfao (usually a david vid)

6 - I honestly don't know what I'd change my name to, sometimes I just wish I didn't really have a name because my self identity fluctuates so much

Explanation on my fixation words ig

I was in like 3rd grade and watched someone do a dramatic reading of Cupcakes (the MLP creepypasta) and me, as 3rd grader had no idea what some of the words were. Lmfao. I remember specifically typing in to Google "egeni" (because captions weren't a thing then) then I became fixated over it because it was super edgy and I really enjoyed creepypasta then lmfao

The word 'critical'? Also same reason. I was a kid and I was fixated on how it sounded. Krit...ik...kal... sounded rad as fuck. The meaning didn't make sense to my kid brain but I stuck with it anyways and even slapped it in some pre-afotd titles. I shit you not, afotd was originally called Gennavieve: Critical Oblivion. (When Genevieve was the main protagonist, and BLUE) i loved the word critical so much bro.

Now, 'anguish'? The same as 'agony'. It's edgy, I was edgy (i still am) and it just sounded cool, I learned the word when I watched a playthrough of Night In The Woods. I had no idea what it meant. But it stuck because... Because context clues. It was edgy and i still actually really enjoy this word still. But yeah it was night in the woods that did it to me lmfao.

Fun guericke fact. My handle of 'gochujangst' contains the word angst which in itself means anguish and I actually WAS considering calling myself gochujanguish waaaay back then.
