The Agony That He Carries

Type: Drabble, Hurt No Comfort

Necessary Warnings: Major Character Death, semi-explicit detail.

This fic is exactly 444 words... I like that—

this is just a long drabble of the future of two of my OCs... it obviously doesn't end all that well. Poor lads.

also got inspired by those blasted poem tiktoks—

"Do you hear that?"

A gentle, tremulous voice was barely audible over the racket of thunder and the incessant ticking of the clock tower above. The soldier felt something throb within, banging desperately for escape. Was it anger? Anguish? Exasperation?

Of course he could hear it. How could he not? The voice was referring to the click-tick of the secondhand of the clock, and they were right beneath it. Each stroke sent ravaging chills through the soldier's body as it ticked closer to o'clock. If he had the capability, he would scream at the voice for being so ignorant, shout for being so mindless and moronic and so willingly blindsighted. With their circumstance, how can it ask such an inane question?

Regardless, the soldier nodded.

"... Time... it never stops... constantly linear with no repeats or hiccups..."

The soldier had to bite his tongue to hold himself from snapping at the voice, who only grew quieter and huskier as it rambled on.

"... And it never lets go. That's the agony that it carries... it'll never stop holding onto you, until you're no longer there for it to cling on to..."

The voice laughed, a frisky, pensive chuckle that barely hinted the pain beneath.

"Will you hold on to me? When time lets me go, will you grab me by the wrist and not let me be lost?"

The soldier dug his hand into the other's, pale sullied skin intertwined with bronze with mahogany red blending both colours together on a war-torn canvas. Tight fingers grasped others that weakened and became ashen.

"Will you let me go, dear raven?"

The soldier shook his head. He couldn't quite tell rain from tears.

He looked down at the voice—the face—equally doused in mahogany as his eyes—fading tones of a dulled hazel—reflected the soldier's own hues of gold and green.

It was the soldier's turn to speak now, fingers clenched tight around his friend's limpened hand.

"Lieutenant," he choked, "my friend, my Orion— please don't go."

The bell above chimed its dronous cacophony, forever thwarting the words this soldier desperately wanted to say.

One chime to feel the tightness around his fingers loosen eternally.

Twice to see those beautiful, sublime eyes slip closed.

Thrice to smell the dreadful stench of post-mortem soreness arise.

The fourth to taste the bitter, unforgiving savour of grievous remorse.

Finally the fifth chime—the loudest to the raven���to hear that final, ultimate gasp of withering life dissipate into silence.

The raven laid his head atop his lost one's hand, an eternal omen of time's permanence and mercilessness.

As rain and tears became separate, Azriel let his anguish consume him.

Ice elemental dragon~ But he’s like…..young. He's a young adult dragon, not fully mature by any means but not a child either. Just past his teenage years. Think early twenties in dragon years (like 21/22)

Isfrid is JUST an elemental dragon. He isn't like Neuvillette. He's more like Dvalin, just much younger. He has no ties to the Seven Sovereigns. He's just a dragon.

Over 500 years ago, he was Lyudmila's pet/familiar. She raised him since he was a tiny little hatchling vishap until he was the age he appears to be now. However, when the cataclysm came, she froze over her nation in anguish--and she froze her familiar as well. Isfrid was frozen in ice for five hundred years, and during that time lost all of his memories of his past. He didn't age at all during that time, so he's actually well over 500 years although he doesn't seem that old.

He was found by a human in Snezhnaya. Isfrid didn't any recollection of his past, so the human man's face was his first memory that he can recall. He changed his form to look like a human as well to mimic the man. That human then took him to his village and gave him the name Isfrid. The man--who was the patriarch of village--and his wife raised Isfrid, although he was technically an adult in dragon years. The village raised him like a human, so all he really knows is humanity and not dragons.

However, one day, Isfrid learned that his adoptive father was killed while out in the village. He was the only family Isfrid had ever known, and the knowledge of his death broke the poor dragon's heart. Much like the Archon, Isfrid's anguish overwhelmed him to the point where he couldn't control his ice. He turned the whole village to ice, even freezing all the villagers in the process. In a single day, he lost everything. So, he ran away.

He fled and hid amongst the blizzards of Snezhnaya. Wherever he went, he made the blizzards worse. I need to determine what he did during the time of his village's destruction to the current timeline, so I will update this post when I come up with that. Now, he’s left wandering Teyvat, trying to hide his identity as an ice dragon as well as control his powers (debating on whether or not he should live on Dragonspine now, but idk we’ll see XDD)

Isfrid tries to make himself seem human because he hates his 'dragon' side. So, he’s pretty much always walking around in a human form. He wears gloves to help control his ice, but if the leylines are too strong or he’s too emotional, they don’t help him at all.

He understands humanity better than Neuvillette since he was essentially raised by humans. However, he tries his best to isolate himself from others because he’s afraid of hurting them. (which is why I’m debating having him live in mondstadt bc Alanna wouldn’t leave him alone XDD)

Seriously tho, one of the few ships i have on this blog xDD but omg i love it so much. And of course have lots of thoughts about it!!

As for whether she's canon to the games or just the movie, i would honestly love to incorporate her into my hcs for my game verse somehow! At the moment though i've only thought about her in the movie context. Though now that you mention it... 👀 i'm getting images of her in the game verse, and i gotta say, i love it LOL. If that somehow develops more on this blog, i would be so up to developing it with someone! But for now i'll gush about my thoughts on her in the movie verse!!

But yeah lmao, my ideas xD— So these two were total nerds and partners together for the longest time. She's like one of the only people Nef's felt he could actually open up to. He has a very hard time making friends lmaao (omg what a surprise, right)—but she was always someone that he felt he could talk to. Which was so nice! I have HCs that he was basically a lonely nerd most of his life until he met her LOL. Also idk why, but I have this image of them meeting when they were in like university and studying together or something, and actually hitting it off well, and finding they had a lot in common! And got along!

Then they got hired together into the rangers and were both still total nerds, and they'd just hang out in their tiny lil office together all day long and work on things. And share ideas lmao! They appreciated each other, and had the same hobbies, and i can so picture them meeting up outside of work, just to have gaming sessions or like this D&D campaign that they've had going for years or something LMAO! They were best friends, and he was totally crushing on her super hard 😭 he's never told her his true feelings, and I HC he still has that crush even to this day (though it's a lot more complicated now). He still wishes that he could somehow bring her to his side, and feels like her talents are wasted with the rangers. He feels that he would appreciate her far more than they ever would.

Of course those are just his own beliefs, but he's convinced lol

Their split to different paths happened slowly while they were both working for the Rangers 😭 Nef began to snap because he cared too much about getting recognition and respect (and hated that Qwark took credit for things Elaris and him created, again and again lmao, which kicked off his whole grudge against Qwark in this verse). But unlike Nef, Elaris didn't mind working in the background and not getting credit (or like, even acknowledgement tbh, if the way she's treated in the movie is any indication)—not that they were intentionally malevolent, they just didn't think to acknowledge her contributions often lolol. But they do genuinely like her!

But yeah, i hc that they worked together for years 👀 She was nef's closest and only real friend, and he was (and still is honestly) in love with her.

And now they're enemies 😭

And oop—that's not even mentioning the whole 'is a robot' thing now, bc that's a whole other can o' worms LOL. Which I can totally get into 👀👍—but basically Nef hated his old self and thinks his robotic self is far superior, and has TOTALLY SNAPPED now lmaao, but still has his feelings for Elaris and wants to bring her to his side

Another weekend, another attempt at this godforsaken fanfic. XDD It’s pretty short, too, so I’m not even sure where it’s getting all this combative energy. Usually the claws don’t come in until you at least pass the 3k mark? Or at least something brief but ambitious. This fic is neither long nor ambitious. But then, I find writing Bleach fic of any sort extremely difficult, so maybe that’s just how it all is regardless of length or ambition. I can only name one weekend where that was not the case (THOUGHT WE’D TURNED A CORNER IN OUR RELATIONSHIP, BLEACH FIC. GUESS NOT.)

— One of the things I find difficult about Bleach fic has to do with my relationship to the characters and how much privacy I think they’re due and how that shapes the writing process. I realize that sounds ridiculous lol. They are little make-believe people. They are owned no privacy. (But they areeeeeeee.) Like, I have a fandom where my relationship to the characters is basically like "you know, you’re just gonna have to deal with this. I’ll follow your lead through this scenario, but this is what we’re doing. Suck it." And for my Pixar Cars, our writing relationship is mostly determined by how much I think they can handle. Animated cars are very sensitive. Like, ah, soft bean. Can’t be overstimulating you! But for the Bleach characters I want to write, my hangup is like, the knowledge that they’d probably prefer that anything they do… not be written. XP And who am *I* to push? Even though I think a big part of fanfic is literally to be pushy, and to see what impression that leaves in the wax. Like, maybe that’s the whole point. (Which leads me to the existential question that has followed me since my first go-round with Bleach, which is whether Bleach is a fic fandom for me or not. But I’ve never actually participated in fandom without writing and I  don’t think I  know how to do that, so it’s a dilemma.)

— Anyway, in light of characters and their privacy, I’m finding that a looser third person feels more appropriate than my go-to POV, which is typically a very tight third limited that hedges stream of consciousness. Propriety aside, though, I’m not yet sure how to make a loose third interesting to me? Like, what can this POV do for me? I dunno. (My one true POV love is second person, which imho is bestest in all circumstances, but it is a drug and I need to exercise temperance.)

— Also I’m a dumdum and came up with a premise in this fic that means I now have to refer to a character by a name I don’t personally refer to him by, and every time I type it my brain shouts NO. Self-inflicted pain!! I tried a timey-wimey stylistic workaround for this but it was so convoluted I was like, nah, self, you’re just gonna have to deal. XP

— Something I keep experiencing in this fic is this desire to tie things up. For extended metaphors to come full circle and for characters to get from point A all the way to point B. For there to be a Narrative Arc. I’m not really sure why, because generally speaking I think a lot of what I write outside of Bleach tends to be pretty vignette-y at its finest and underelaborated at its worst. But apparently my line for "this is fine" is different (or thinks it needs to be different) here than it is in other fandoms. XP For this angery fic that hates me I’ve probably cut as much as I’ve written at this point, lines out of paragraphs and multiple second halves. I think it keeps trying to stretch further than the narrator is presently able to take it.

Maybe he’s the one who wants it to be neat, idk? But I think he’s also more responsible about not forcing things than I am, so maybe it’s just me.

— If I had to characterize the process thus far, I think it’d be that teeter-totter between "yo, if this is going to be a story, it needs to be more than just you talking circuitously about mushrooms" (TRAGICALLY I don’t even think there are any mushrooms left in the current draft, even if that’s where this started) and "yo, this is trying to do TOO much, the premise is meant to support less." Like, you need to do the work of finding the meaningful energy here, but you can’t just come back with the kitchen sink of everything these characters could potentially think about. They really can’t do anything with most of that in this moment.

I think cutting aggressively has definitely helped me like it more (in that I like it more right now than I have at any point in its existence to this point), and I think it’s helpful to think that the ending isn’t supposed to exist in the fic itself—it exists in the canon that succeeds it. So the task isn’t to arrive, but to honor canon enough that that connection is strong enough to work.

^ But I also keep trying to do that in really overdetermined ways lmaooo. I think part of that is not having written very much for Bleach and feeling like, gotta practice my scales! Like, the idea is new to me in that I have not written it, but also very un-new—so much so that even I am bored by it. XDD I don’t want to bore myself but I also don’t want to be like, wow, that non-existent march from Point A to Point Z^i sure is...something!

— If you clicked on this cut for some reason and are reading this, you might be thinking, "Wow, B3 is really uh,,, overthinking this,,," Please know that the first half of this writing experience involved almost no thought and mere prayers. That did not work this time; ergo, Plan B! But I like getting nerdy about POVs, too, so Plan B is also fine. Uglyyyyyyy dumpling sssssssss

I agree with your take on The Only Exception trope - but I also think there's a lotta people out there that just don't analyze their ships, even on a surface level. For many, shipping never really goes beyond "they're hot together/I like their chemistry." I'm sure there are shippers out there excusing the toxic implications of both ships (Kanej and Delena) but I don't think the vast majority are intentionally shipping them for those reasons. (1/2)

(2/2) Like, I hate to say it, but I didn't consider the toxic aspect of what Kaz says about Inej until you brought it up. I just heard "Inej has special skills and Kaz is a pragmatic cold motherfucker and he finds those skills useful." I didn't really see it in a romantic setting until I saw gifsets about it. (I haven't read the books yet.) I just don't think all shippers are doing introspection on why they ship things. I don't have Big Thoughts on my own ships until very deep into a fandom.

That's true for casual shippers and fans, yeah. There have been canons I watched casually and only later, when I go more invested in them, started questioning those aspects. Before that, they might've or might've not pinged *something*, but it didn't raise to the surface, so to speak (the primary example I can think of rn is Alec/Magnus in Shadowhunters. I went from reluctant watcher to All In after 2x08 -the Rizzy episode, ofc-, and that transformed my reaction from "not really into them, idk" to "I would pay money to the writers to break them up, actually" xDD).

But that's not who I was thinking about in the post. If a Kanej shipper goes around spilling vitriol in other people's inboxes and posts at the slightest criticism of their ship like I've seen them do, they're in as deep into the fandom as someone can be (too deep even, I'd argue LOL). And that's what I take issue with.

Especially because a lot of these shippers’ arguments are unfounded tu quoque accusations about how the person raising an issue MUST ship something they've deemed worse (whether this is true or not is irrelevant, in my experience. People have presumed about anything with me. One time I had an anon accusing me of shipping Josie/Lizzie, an idea that hadn't even crossed my mind until that very moment xDD).

Basically, if they act as if there's an objective ethical scale when it comes to ships (something *I* never claimed in the first place and I'm very much opposed to),l list everything that's "wrong" or troubling about other people's, and make insulting presumptions about their lives based on them, I'm going to expect them to back that shit up by thinking twice about their actual OTP lmao.

I haven't seen IT 2 but I'm enjoying that wild discourse too (it is funny but some comments like "lol they made penniwise homophobic because they saw the memes and didn’t want people to think he’s gay" makes me wonder how much they are serious or joking... "They were really hoping he's change after dating Babadook huh?" and if people really have difficulties to separate canon from memes or if they're joking too). But mostly I wonder: why people have a hard time getting it's a HORROR movie? (1/?)

Is it because there is one actor from stranger things, they thought it would similar, with "light horror" and positive representations? Is it the clean picture and cinematography that makes it looks like less a horror movie because it hasn't a "dirty" quality of image some horror movie has? Are they just discovering what a horror movie can be ('cause it is one of the few mainstream one)? (3/3) Like I don't watch a lot of horror movies but obviously not everyone of them have the good guys winnings, or have a final girl, or have happy gay/black/oppressed people/... in it, especially if the movie wants to show the dark side of humanities. number one: I have a feeling a lot of people watched the first because finn w/olfhard was in it and they were expecting it to be stranger things and the first movie was kid-based enough that they could hang on to that hope until the second, but like........... sorry to say that’s nowhere near how it works

number two: none of these people actually read a king book or they’d know exactly what they’d be getting into ie extremely fucked up horror like guys king never was the #1 choice for comfortable reading I don’t get how you go watch anything that’s not shawshank redemption and expect a comfortable viewing experience 

number three: horror movies are by nature supposed to be uncomfortable - like, the entire point of good horror is that a) you have to put yourself in front of things that Are Not Comfortable To Look At and b) Achieve Some Kind Of Catharsis By The End or b2) Get Out Of The Movie Feeling Fucking Unsettled And Thinking About It, and I think IT is in category b), but like... going into horror movies assuming that it’s fake blood and everyone is happy at the end is ridiculous because the point is that people die during horrors and actually IT has a higher survival rate than average and the average stephen king book which says all

number four: the fact that people took a meme seriously just kills me because honestly, there is no single thing in the first movie that makes you assume pennywise is anything positive. none. and if anyone was expecting pennywise to go to pride marches even just having seen the first one... guys. it’s a killer clown. who eats children. and other people. he’s not going to pride marches. also the whole debate about the first scene is pointless because it was in the book and it was based on a real murder that happened in bangor when king was plotting the book, and the entire point was showing you that a) people are evil, b) pennywise is evil, c) the return of the ancient evil that is 100% bad comes with killing a gay person which automatically makes the killing monstrous/evil, and it’s been there since 1986, and it’s in the first thirty pages of the book so... just... read a wikipedia summary? read the first chapter? idk but people complaining about pennywise not being pro-lgbt is just out of this world ridiculous to me at least

number five: idk re your last question because I honestly don’t know anymore but it feels like today’s fandom has this thing where they make grey characters absolutely evil without a chance of repenting when they’re set up to change and then they actually end up with True Evil That Is Just Interested In That and they suddenly can’t recognize it and want to turn it into cute and cuddly or not threatening and honestly I don’t get it whatsoever. also as someone who reads horror/watches horror not to get scared (bc I don’t easily) but for how as a genre is really good for character development/having settings where people have to face their fears whether they want it or not (which is a thing I find interesting in fiction okay)/a few different kinds of cathartic viewing/reading (not counting the part where I watch bad slasher movies because I think they’re hilarious or where I find actually entertaining a lot of trashy horror ie the nightmare on elm street sequels) I really don’t know how to feel about people going into *horror* movies expecting the cute ship or stranger things 2.0 or not getting that the ancient evil creature that’s 100% evil and nothing else is a trope as old as the genre? I mean I honestly Do Not Get It, could be that lately horror movies haven’t been very mainstream and good and this one is an exception but still... it’s horror. based on a book by a guy who’s known for fucked up horror. research things maybe, but from what I’m seeing people don’t :/

tldr: I think your points are all good and tbqh most horror movies don’t do the happy ending (actually it in comparison to a lot has.. a.. relatively less bad ending than most ACTUALLY the movie’s ending has fixed one of the things that irked me most about the book’s ending so GOOD) and people are assuming that most entertainment these days is harmless, but... idk man. Uuuh, well, lemme think, for fantoms that aren’t sonic stuff, I enjoy Retsuko and Haida because adorable. Angus and Gregg from NITW is too adorable for it’s own good. 

Sonic wise, well, I’m not strong on my ships but they’re are some I do think about or do think are matching, I think Shade and Knuckles are a good match, I enjoy Espio and Tikal, especially in my canon. 

I do love Locke and Luger a lot though, since I can see them working in my canon, but other then that, I’m not huge on ships so eh. 

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.

Locke and Luger, mainly because they were related but then with some fanart and talking with friends of mine, especially @terraqua111, I started to like it and my friends had a point that they were too distantly related for it to matter anymore. She also showed me Lien-Da and Xenin which I liked. 

I also didn’t consider Locke to be paired with anyone else before Luger, then I saw @lockewat‘s ship, Chuck and Locke... and I thought it was quite suiting as well. 

Two other ones are Vanilla and Big because that was so adorable and that would be such a peaceful relationship good god it’s what they’d both need, so many picnics for dates. and @motobugg did some work on Rouge and Wave which I have never considered and I immediately thought... damn that would actually work a lot. XD Also Shadamy at some points due to a friends artwork and Shadow would be balanced from Amy’s personality that he would need.

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will. I’ve never been big on Julie-Su and Knuckles, in the comics it felt kind of forced to me, same with Sonic and Sally, that I don’t see them suiting each other at all.

Sonic fandom. XDD Been in that for around 8-9 years. Since I was 9 or 10 years old.

I think it would’ve just been Shade and Knuckles. lol Again ships aren’t my life.

Mainly ongoing stuff, I know it started with games, so I guess games? But I enjoy shows/series as well.

Ummmm... not that I know of.

Animal Crossing? I didn’t start playing the phone game until I saw people talking and reblogging stuff about it, then I tried it. 

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Well, in Steven Universe, a lot of the character have great arcs, that who their true opinions and colours, like how Amethyst had self-hating habits, Pearl didn’t think she was worth much, and seeing Peridot’s growing into a whole different gem, it’s really cool.

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)

I’ll go with um... Lars from Steven Universe, I didn’t like him much as a character at first, but I could understand his insecurity and being unsure on how to act and how to show himself, and being scared to show his true colours... but now he’s showing his own worth and letting himself be who he is with the Off-colours, which I can genuinely appreciate about him, he’s much better as a character now. 

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

Can I say the entire brotherhood? XD I would love that like you wouldn’t believe.

Just more Brotherhood content in general, uuuummm more monster-related AU’s? I don’t know, maybe more merchandise too? I don’t know I’m not all that demanding about content. o-o I’m terrible at this.

All the Way (Jacksepticeye fan song) is the one that came up on shuffle, and it reminded me of Hawking, at least my version. I could imagine he would listen to this to motivate himself or something like that.

When they’re not a couple and they’re just best friends, Locke and Luger I guess, they act like big dorks. I don't know, I don’t think about relationships much besides family ones. 

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)

Hmm, well, I feel while Locke doesn’t know what his main sexuality is right now, he’d feel he’d be in writing (sexuality)/Asexual, as he never really had sexual feelings, he only had sex in order to have his son, and he honestly never liked it all that much. 

I also have a head canon that Steppenwolf is afraid of humiliation, or just making a fool of himself in social situations (he’s got a very well hidden social anxiety), so if he saw a bunch of people staring at him and whispering to each other, he’d instantly become worried about what he did. 

Another head canon is that I love to imagine Sabre can swordfight very well, and the person who taught him is surprisingly Tobor. As he was very good with a sword and shield combo back in the day (before his injuries). 

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending? 

That Steppenwolf is a werewolf okay not really, I’m not really about strong head canons that I would ‘die defending’. I just like the thought of him being one because it’d be ironic for his name... and it’s just with me for so long man.

Steppenwolf (Sonic Fandom I guess)- I still don't fully understand why I liked him, I simply did but nowadays I just find the character I made him an extremely interesting character and every time I’ve wrote something or drawn something to try and cheer myself up, it made me feel he’d be a very strong, protective and oddly supportive in his own way. I’m not sure. I’m weird. 

Lapis Lazuli (Steven Universe Fandom)- I just want her to be happy, I find her really interesting, her powers are really cool and I just want to know how things turn out for her, it just sucks that she tends to disappear for long periods of time. 

Angus (Night in the Woods)-He’s a bit underrated but he’s just so cute to me, especially with how others draw him, I love his character and I feel bad for him when he takes about his abusive childhood and issues growing up that made him who he is today, made me want to give him a big hug. 

V - Which character do you relate to most?

Well, I feel I can relate to Angus at a few points, always feeling like I have to be the responsible one, being usually quiet and wanting to hide in corners in parties (and your friend that you stick to is your corner in those situations), 

I also feel I can relate to Retsuko from Aggretsuko, always trying to keep calm and from losing my temper, also Mister Ton kind of reminds me of my dad at some points... and he can piss me off just as much as he does with Retsuko so yeah. 

Part of me also feels like I relate to my version of Rembrandt, he’s an artist, he deals with a lot of emotional issues, he’s insecure about his body size/weight, very motherly/fatherly and protective. 

I dunno. 

W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.

Annoying characters that think they’re full of themselves and practically perfect while thinking everyone else is below them and everyone is unworthy of their ‘greatness’... or mary-sues. 

Or just a needlessly dramatic moments or moments of anger and arguments that don’t need to happen. 

X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.

Kind of the big strong protective one with a heart of gold and is very loving whether they show it or not, or big ass ones who are strong as hell but are really just gentle giants.

And probably monsters stuff like werewolves or stuff but sometimes that can backfire and become annoying. 

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?

Team Fortress 2 is one, have a few friends who like that game while I don’t like it much anymore for personal reasons, some horror fandoms like Five Nights at Freddy’s, Little Nightmares all of that. Idk

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)

Umm... I always strive to make my Guardians unique in different situations, hell, I imagined they were in certain AU’s or in certain video game situations, like a fighting game, I’d like imagining like ‘finishing moves’ they’d have or the type of weapons they’d have, or even simple stuff like hobbies or favourite foods. Just stuff like that... and I will try everything in my power to be unique, like in my Gem AU, wanted all the gems to be different and at the least unique, and the same with the Monster AU, only Thunder and Steppe’s are the same but they have a difference.

Caroline and Edith: A Brief Intro

I figured I don’t talk enough about the gals so I will do so here because i can’t concentrate and wanted to write about them for like a year

about: the concept of nyo characters and 2p characters is a thing in canon hetalia and the fandoms- i’m not terribly fond of 2p as its been characterized by the fandom (as sort of two dimensional ‘bad’ versions) and have only treated it jokingly thus far, but i have for whatever reason been curious about gender bending/sliding/swapping. I personally like personifications to /mean/ something and not simply give them a different gender, so I personally have thought of nyo and on occasion 2p personifications as different aspects of one city. In the case of ‘fem ed’ and ‘fem cal’, they represent former municipalities that are absorbed into existing ones. Some people do this with their nyo!characters, some people don’t, it’s just a personal preference of mine that I think gives an extra dimension and twist to just popping existing characters into different clothes. Basically, they look similar after having lived together so long (the joke being that to people outside the city they are basically the same thing) and they have a sort of adopted sibling relationship though they are not biologically related.

fyi i know more off the top of my head about edith because i’m a u of a alumna and grew up on the south side literally on campus so therefore a little biased :^) Do i have interest in creating nyo characters for other alberta ocs? idk - i have a slight interest but idk if i have the time or energy to invest in characters who aren’t as familiar or immediately important. It’s more a development that comes after a lot of research and local knowledge. But anyway, without further ado, here are some facts.

Edith / Fem!Edmonton / Old Strathcona / South Edmonton

History

- once an independent and successful city (Strathcona), joined Edmonton in 1912 for tax benefits. 

- Now exists as Old Strathcona - most well known for being the home of the University and Whyte Ave as well as Rachel Notley’s stronghold - typically the only riding in the province to consistently vote NDP in both provincial and federal elections. Hipster central (though is slowly losing that status to Ed and 124th street on the North side). 

- was given the University of Alberta to compromise between Ed/Cal, but Ed ended up getting it anyway.

- represents the area on the south side of the North Saskatchewan. As a result she has more Blackfoot heritage where Ed has more Cree heritage. Also home to a lot of Metis people who fled Red River. Really sad because Laurent Garneau’s tree just got brought down ToT

- got the railroad that ed was supposed to get because the CPR was too lazy to build a bridge. only some vague bitter feelings between her and ed over this but they’ve gotten over it - ed is making sure to hold on to the old railway tracks Just In Case.

- Fought really hard in the 1970s to keep her heritage buildings and status during a time when the city was ready to tear it all down. Still really rankled by new developments.

Looks/Personality/Interests

- round hips and buff legs, narrow torso, not-quite-flat chest. Basically shaped like a bowling pin if a bowling pin was pointy, or alternatively, shaped like the Strathcona Public Building 

- always has her hair up when not at home, most usually in a bun. Cats eye glasses which she actually does use to see. 

- Younger than Ed but grew up faster than him. Is still taller than him today (but only slightly). Generally more blunt, more fashionable, more open and outspoken politically, and less of a worry wart. Technically closer to Cal in age.

- cat person, tea drinker, and so many tattoos. probably piercings. i haven’t figured it out. seems to manage to eat cake at block 1912 and all the trendy instagrammable foods and drinks every day and yet has no obvious source of income. Seems to disappear into that mysterious door just off Whyte labeled “SECRET LOCATION, DO NOT ENTER” (aka a local brewery’s secret hq a close walk from the old railway station which has since been converted into a beer market). Her personal style is more rockabilly than explicitly hipster- there are a lot of retro dress shops in old Strath + tattoos + leather because Alberta

- volunteers at fringe every year and probably on a first name basis with nathan fillion. fringe/acting is her life. Has an expansive and expressive theatre ability on stage, but off it she’s just kind of ‘meh’ and indifferent and private.

- is at the farmer’s market every saturday, probably selling stuff ed has grown

- lives in an old Edwardian heritage home somewhere in Old Strath, has a fluffy white cat, bikes or takes transit everywhere.  

- likes to weld weird abstract metal... things?

- Likely the one who caused the political Orange Crush for Ed, but could care less about the Orange Crush of the sporting world. Literally could not care less about hockey because of the bad riots they cause on Whyte that keep her up at night - ‘literally no amount of alcohol is going to fix this for either of us, go home’. Her sporting passion is actually basketball and roller derby, but nobody knows that because she doesn’t tell anyone. Doesn’t ride horses, (if she does, it’s English style riding), but really loved betting on them back in the day. Has a lot of FC Edmonton merch and watches soccer games, but gave up on lacrosse when the Rush moved to Saskatchewan and broke her heart. In general, she loathes organized sport and Especially the NHL, but will watch U of A Pandas/Golden Bears games because they are cheap and accessible. 

- sex positive, just not interested in discussing her own sex life or those of people she knows. I tend to think of her as aroace-spectrum (i.e. sex neutral or favourable in certain contexts, not interested in long term romance. No gender preference. Doesn’t like dating people she knows/friends.) She recently started hosting Pride herself and it has been a great success. Only enters adult stores if they are cute and queer friendly.

Caroline / Fem!Calgary / Bowness / Northwest Calgary

History

- Used to be part of Cochrane Ranch in the golden age of cattle ranching. Grew up with kind of a southern belle/debutante lifestyle that hasn’t totally left her. 

- Younger than Cal, grew up in the golden age of ranching and in the middle of massive immigration. 

- that is, both she and calvin were raised in ranch houses learning to play croquet and polo and dressing well and having tea and so on and so forth - Caro in some ways moreso than Calvin who had previously grown up in the old NWMP fort as well and knew differently- slightly more about Calgary-the-wild/mild-west-frontier

- The ranch was later divided up into recreational parks and ice skating rinks and golf courses and houses and things - though it wasn’t part of the city, people from Calgary would come up to visit all the time by streetcar as a little mini ‘escape’. Met a lot of famous people during this period, including Fred McCall the ace wartime pilot who would fly her and Cal out to Banff for day trips 

- Joined Calgary in 1964 because the nearby town of Montgomery had already done so, so why not. 

- still has really strong class divides due to the history of the area

Looks / Personality / Interests

- Though she’s sort of a prairie princess in some ways, Caro really embraces the “tough flannel wearing” sort of image of western ladies who would ride all day to get to a dance in another town. She’s still very insistent on presenting herself as feminine and well to do, but she can’t shake the country image no matter how hard she may try to play big city socialite.

- Tall like Calvin, only slightly shorter than him. Freckles, more obvious and more numerous than Calvin’s. Pretty much an hourglassy figure and a little bit busty (c cup because the city’s dumb obsession with cs get it). When I draw her i have that terrible quote from Destroy All Humans stuck in my head i.e. “would you get a load of this brassiere? i could torpedo a uboat with these things!” because I guess I also think of her as a post-war suburban housewife secretly.

- Usually has her hair in a loose side braid but will attempt fancier up-dos for social events. It’s wavy and relatively long, past her shoulders. Pierced ears, likes long dangly earrings and Expensive jewelry. I tend to look at the Library when I draw her - I like the round wheely shapes from its history as an ATV shop and use those as jewelry, so its like Long and Round shapes for her body but she also has a pokey chin/nose/fingers etc like Calvin.

- she tries to keep her fashion sense in that sort of light and airy feminine zone but she still gets all her dresses and blouses from Lammles. Will Absolutely rock the full western jeans and flannel during stampede or on vacation in the mountains, but in the city she tries to keep it more urban and/or professional.

- bigger fan of sports than Edith, Extremely into hockey and is a Serious supporter of the Calgary Inferno. Only wears jerseys on game day, but has one in each colour for each team.

- her political views are slowly ~seeming~ to shift- being a typically right wing conservative stronghold was upset in the 2015 election and she now lives in an NDP riding which is Very Interesting. It was a split between NDP/Cons/WR 5:5:3 so you could argue the right-wing vote outnumbered the left wing 8:5, but it’s still Very Interesting, thanks First Past the Post. Generally like Calvin she is a True Blue Conservative, though she might lean more towards WR and he leans more Liberal (shocker, I know). But I won’t be able to figure out whether she’d be a UCP voter yet so we will have to Wait and See who she hates more xDD  

- that said, like many Albertans and particularly those in urban areas, Caro is fiscally conservative and socially liberal. She does take a longer time to understand issues that don’t obviously affect her and for that reason she is the sort of person to deny the feminist label even though she really aligns with it, but she’s learning. Generally really traditional and embraces femininity and the division of labour between genders, etc. WASPy. 

- generally very no-nonsense and more biting verbally than Calvin, but also very much a romantic. She can be the PTA wine mom of your worst nightmares or the harlequin heroine of your dreams, just try not to get on her bad side. She likes numbers and finances because they are straight forward and say what they mean.

- I’m still divided on where she lives. Calvin is the one with the penthouse downtown, Caroline is the one in the suburbs but she probably still owns ranchland that she likes to supervise even if she doesn’t actually live there. All her horses are named after horses from Heartland or something, probably. Dog person. Hangs out in Edworthy Park to meet dogs, probably.

- literally both the girl in pumps and a pencil skirt who drives a car2go to get groceries and also the girl in rhinestone studded boots who drives a big black truck with a huge pink flowery cursive ‘oil wife’ decal on the back window, or the pink flowery cursive ‘dirty money’ across the top.

- literally to understand caroline-as-socialite pls just watch gavin crawford’s wild west - the oil wife [part one] [part two] i swear to god i cry laughing every time at ‘how about a western theme- how about not’. Everything gets me but especially the passive aggressive ordering-dessert-for-everyone and staring them down until she gets her way. You know what, just watch all of the shorts, it’s a brilliant series.

sexuality headcanon: there are certain Discworld characters that are hard to think of as ~sexual beings~~ lmfao, and Vetinary is certainly one of them xD. Even if we know of a past relationship of his, it’s very easy to read him as aroace tbh.

otp: I know everyone brotps them, and for all I know so will I when I read their actual interactions, but I’m super curious about Margolotta/Vetinari (fond exes! Chessmaster manipulators! Lady vampire! Older lady + pseudo mentor! Like, c’mon. Did anyone who knew me expect me not to go there?). sexuality headcanon: headcanoning her as bi is completely self-indulgent. And I’m sure some people would argue it’s “problematic” based on a couple of show comments, even if I’m not basing my headcanon on that. I simply think she’s very attractive and I want her to be sapphic LOL (Eve should’ve dated her okay).

otp: tbh I’m very happy I have the best of both worlds, in terms of shipping, between Jessica/Martin and Gil/Jessica xDD

brotp: I love her relationship with both of their children (though I hope we see even more of her and Ainsley).

Oh god guys. Guys. I don’t know like I’ve written so much fucking shit I have no idea, but okay first thing I can think of JUST ON AO3 IF I START GOING WITH LJ I’M NEVER GONNA FINISH is the ending of take a sad song and make it better because like I’m shit at metaphors or anything like that and... idk this one came out really well I think?

He’s taken his sad song and made it not just better but great, and maybe for the first time in his life he feels completely at harmony with the entire fucking universe and when Robb’s tongue touches his own he parts his lips with a sigh and kisses back even harder.

They only stop when they hit their heads against the damned ceiling and Robb bursts out in laughter, but they don’t crash down to the ground and Theon’s more than ready for it when they kiss again –

(heart and soul)

and maybe now he knows what his favorite song is.

It’s the one he’s living in, he realizes as his heart soars, and he kisses Robb back, and they don’t come down on the ground for a long time.

For the first time in his life, it feels like the natural state of things, and maybe that’s not the best thing of all (that one’s that he finally went through with this and confessed his damned feelings and that Robb wants him back), but it’s just up there along with all the almost-favorite songs he has already.

2/ For which work/piece of work do you get comments telling how marvelous it is, while you’re not that enthralled by that piece yourself?

More than not being enthralled (because I thought it was an okay crack fic)... well, five people who didn’t believe Ned Stark for one second about Jon’s paternity and one who did has an inhuman number of hits/kudos and it’s probably in my most popular top ten fics and like... it’s less than 2k words of crack and I wrote it in twenty minutes I swear XD I’d have never thought that would get so popular though I guess the subject lends itself to it but like there’s shit I worked on for weeks that doesn’t have a tenth of the hits, IDK GUYS XD but I don’t hate it or anything I thought it came out pretty nice. I just wasn’t expecting it. XD

3/ Which character highjacked the story they’re in?

Theon in when they built you, brother, they broke the mold (iT’S ABOUT ROBB AND JON BUT HE WANTED TO BE IN IT AND WHO AM I TO DENY IT) and jaime in you sang me a song as pure as the breeze (ngl jaime was the best thing about that story and it was ABOUT NED AND CAT FALLING IN LOVE GUYS XDD). we could also make a case for davos in some flowers bloom dead because he was supposed to be in it for one chapter and then he’s staying until the end lol.

4/ Which sentence/kind of sentence do you overuse?

Really. I use really too much. And people opening a sentence with well. And I do extra long sentences but I don’t care anymore about that. XD

5/ Which work of yours would you be dying to get fanart for?

I’ve got some fanart for a few fics but okay let’s admit it I’d die for fanart of either any scene from some flowers bloom dead or anything from the everything is cupcakes and (mostly) nothing hurts verse? that one lends itself to fanfic I think. or the jb mutant au fic especiallythefinalscene but I mean if anyone does fanart out of shit I write I’m overtly flattered <3  

6/ Which work would you rather forget?

half of the crap I wrote at fourteen with OCs lol. out of the current stuff I have on... eh. a pinch hit I did for gotexchange years ago which... was... let’s just say writing it was hell on earth for reasons even if I liked the ship and I’m still so conflicted about it I never put it on ao3. now someone who knows who they are read it and said it was actually good so I might just put it on ao3 for closure but I never hated writing a fic for characters and a pairing I liked as much as I hated writing that one, blergh.

7/ Do you have a project you never got the nerves/guts to write?

My problem is that I don’t have time, not that I don’t have nerves or guts, but like there’s this psych ward au where theon has DID which has been sitting on the list for years but I’m like... I don’t want to fuck it up because I really don’t want to be the person who writes fic about mental disorders and does it wrong, but if actual psychiatrists still don’t agree on whether DID exists how do I do it damn it XD also I... kinda... want to do the canon verse fic where jaime actually realize the depth of fuckedupness his rship with cersei was and has to deal with the backload of ptsd he has been bottling up since he was fifteen and with the fact that he was in an emotionally abusive mess of a relationship for all of his life but like, a) I need to be in the right frame of mind, b) I’m entirely aware that it’s an unpopular way of seeing things, c) idk if I trust myself to be objective. so.

ah, and then there’s... a thing... that... I don’t even know if I want to mention what it is but let’s just say that if I ever write it I’m sharing it via email with selected people because if I actually posted it in public tumblr would crucify the shit out of me (spoilers: it’s... about... making fun of tumblr’s brand of idiocy in very unpolitically correct ways) so lol if I ever get there it’s gonna see the light of public day after this website crashes and burns. 8/ For which fandom have you written the most? (can be original fic, say if you count in terms of words, chapters or fics)

dunno, if you count LJ it’s asoiaf/lost/spn on a more or less equal basis. I have like some 200 fics for asoiaf/got but back in the day I wrote definitely at least 200 for lost and more than 100 for SPN so XDDDDDD no idea probably asoiaf if we take the sheer wordcount amount but XD
