Hiiii i just saw your Outsiders/Christine art and HOLY SHIT. When i say my jaw was on the floor it was on the floor. I’m a huge Stephen King fan (I’ve only read his books bc to me his books are good enough. I’m not a huge horror movie watcher girlie but i can do thriller/horror books. I have like 8 of his books, including Christine, on my bookshelf) and once again: HOLY SHIT. I can lowkey see the Outsiders trio as the Christine trio. Now whenever i go to reread the book, i can’t view it the same anymore haha. Another Outsiders/Stepehen King art idea for Halloween: 11/22/63. It’s one of my absolute favorite Stephen King novels. And if you haven’t read it, highly recommend it. It’s so intense and entertaining and i do get lost in that book. Anyways, HOLY SHIT. But i was also wondering if you have any tips for beginner digital artists? Like on layers, line art especially, shading etc.? I really want to get into more digital art but my tradional sketches lowkey look better than my digital ones haha. Whenever i see your stevepop or Outsiders art it just gives me a boost of inspiration. And i love them your honor.

Woah, thanks!! I’ll have to check it out- so far I’ve only read Christine and The Body (because my dad’s obsessed w/ Stand By Me), but I really dug both so I’m looking forward to it!

And as for digital art tips, I guess I’d say to keep things loose! I like to use a modified version of the Shale Brush on procreate for my sketches and lineart because it resembles a pencil, and the rough messiness makes it a whole lot easier for me to just relax and draw the way I do on paper. I don’t shy away from messiness especially in digital art- it makes things flow better in a medium that can get really stiff sometimes.

I like to do my sketches in bright colors, and I tend to assign every subject a certain color so I can tell them apart easily (idk how helpful it is, but it works for me!) Then I lower the opacity and draw on a layer on top like this:

Then I turn off the sketch layer and either fill everything in with base colors, or color it in grayscale w/ this Copic marker brush and varying levels of opacity for my comics.

As for shading, I do a combination of cell shading and painterly shading (picture for the uninitiated lol). Both have their merits, and shadows in real life usually include a bit of both.

For more simple stuff, I take a shade of either purple or sometimes magenta and cell shade everything with this pencil brush on a multiply layer, usually set to 30-ish% opacity depending on the drawing. Then I’ll blend it out a bit to soften some edges, which is what makes it look painterly. Also if you don’t know, “clipping mask” layers are really helpful for shading! You just put the shading layer over the colors and it stops you from going outside of the colors, it can be super helpful. This method is the one I usually use, and the one I’ve been using since I first started about five years ago now.

For the Christine poster specifically though I mostly just kept everything to one layer and color dropped from the reference, altering the colors as I saw fit- and just sort of guessed for Evie because she’s way tanner than Leigh and needed her own colors. The only times I used different layers were for each individual character so that they didn’t mess each other up, and also for the sketches, which I put on top of the colors but lightened the opacity on. Idk that I’d recommend this for a beginner tho, it’s taken me years to get comfortable working like this!

Sketch is set to a multiply layer here too. You can’t see it super well here tbh, because of how dark everything is, but oh well. Here’s a study I did last year with the same method tho! (Also she’s got some similarities to Evie huh?? I guess I have a type lol oops)

Anyhow, that’s probably enough for now lol- but lmk if there’s anything else you wanna know! And obviously this is just how I do things, there’s no hard and fast rules for any of this- I’m making it up as I go along, and you should too!!

I'll probably just skip over black flag for now and then come back to it once ive got the money for it then (i play on ps4, i cant stand the pc controls and also my laptop cannot run the ac games lol, i tried ac1 since thats the only one not on ps4 and it was super laggy despite being such an old game and again, i hate the pc controls very much)

i too am a slut for egyptian and greek mythology (i know a bit about norse too but not a ton), and i've played a fair bit of origins, though haven't finished it bc its long af, i remember having 0 interest in Layla at all even though I did look at her laptop and read some of the emails and stuff, I didn't really understand what was going on with her (I thought she still worked for Abstergo and was in the process of going rogue? Again though I haven't finished it yet so), and I thought the thing with her not needing to be related to Aya and Bayek was lame, I feel like needing to share DNA with whichever assassin whose memories you're seeing is kinda the point?

I'm pretty iffy about the god/magic stuff too, like I'm interested in and will be playing Odyssey once I eventually finish Origins, since I bought them both in a double pack during the boxing day sale or whatever it was last year, but from what I've seen about Odyssey and Valahlla, alot of it seems waaaay to fantastical for a series that used to be (relatively) grounded in reality. (I've found myself not too bothered by spoilers for this series, which is unusual for me, but I've been reading fic and watching youtube videos doing story breakdowns and stuff since I was like halfway through AC2, and I'm still enjoying it alot despite knowing the gist of what happens to Desmond and how Ezio finds Altair and stuff) (Im getting off track lol I do that alot)

As for the Kassandra/Alexios thing, that's basically what happened yeah, it was 100% sexism, they did a pretty similar thing with Evie in Syndicate. IIRC the game was originally supposed to be just Evie, but the Ubisoft higher ups didn't want a female protangonist/didn't think one would sell as well, so they 'compromised' by adding Jacob, and then heavily focusing all the marketing on him. As much as I love Jacob (which is alot) that was originally supposed to be Evies story.

The staff thing sounds kinda...dumb? Though I guess that explains why I heard Kassandra shows up in Valhalla? (I am way too into this fandom for someone who hasn't even finished the Ezio trilogy yet lol, though hopefully I'll finish that either tonight or tomorrow, I'm starting Sequence 7 of Revelations as I'm writing this)

Everything I've heard about Valhalla makes it seem like it's really not for me, from the story to how heavily they went on the rpg mechanics to how goddamn long it is, so unless I find it cheap on marketplace on a time I can spare the cash, I'm pretty unlikely to play that one tbh, though Mirage might go on my christmas list if reception for it is good and they stick with releasing it on both ps4 and ps5 (fucking spiderman 2 crushing my heart like that wtf)

the tree thing sounds like it might be an interpretation of the world tree from norse myth? idk though, most of my norse knowledge comes from just general pop culture or the Magnus Chase series, but if that tree is somehow Desmond I will fucking scream

Ha! Actually you opened the Pandora Box!

Honestly I have an OC for every fandom?men/women I like. Some of them doesn't even have name but I can imagine traits of them all. Also some OCs add a pinch of supernatural fantasy into the stories.

For AC 1 I have Amara and Shifa.

Shifa was an idea for a witch that was able to give Malik his hand back. Tbh I wrote some about it and then dropped it ;; (opsie)

For Ezio I have Flora. The only supernatural part of her is that she can see ghosts. Basically she sees ghosts of Federico and Giovanni and then tried to tell Ezio about it because she needs his help to help them cross the border. Actually I mostly use Flora in Sims but that story is complicated and lasts for all Ezio trilogy.

For Connor I thought about Slavic girl (idk I just like Slavic looks and folk outfits/stories etc. She run away from Europe after her country was destroyed and became a doctor/herbalist in America. She helps people both British and Native if she can. She doesn't want to hurt anyone. She used to be an assassin but she didn't want to kill and take part in wars.

Olivia - I already said a bit about her. She is a seamstress, Thomas Hickey's younger sister, bunny lover.

For Edward... Well I don't have oc for him to be with but I have an OC they actually starts her story in black flag! Ceri (Ceridwen) is a mermaid that became friends with Edward. She was for him when he lost everyone but when he settled in London she had to leave. She went back to th sea but she visited sometimes to check on them and meet baby Haytham. She promised Edward she would protect Haytham. But then she disappeared again and when she came back Edward was dead and Haytham was gone. She found him eventually during ac rogue, decided to stick by his side but eventually fell for Shay. Isn't it too weird? But I really like mermaids and sirens so I just had to make at least one!

I have 2 oc for Haytham. Olivia is my main one but when I'm down I like to make something about the other one. Lori (Loralei) is a siren who is with Haytham. I created her for my friend who has also sea creature for Shay! Sometimes we have fun with developing their relationship.

Shay - as I said, for him I only have this mermaid lady.

Arno - Vivienne. It's a soulmate au which I already wrote and it's somewhere on Tumblr and my ao3. I think I may write more about them sooner or later. Back then I had big mood for soulmate au's because I find them interesting!

For Arno I also have male OC Gilbert (alternative for french Frye I guess ). Gilbert is a writer and a friend of De Sade. He meets Arno by accident and then... He writes a book about him, but actually changed his name and such. But when Arno sees this book, he knows it's about him. He and Gilbert have funny relationship. Gilbert is at the same time very mature and very childish! He helps Arno to move on in life.

Jacob - let's start with Megan, another Slavic oc who tries to help people who run away from central/East Europe to London. She is an assassin and was sent to London to free it. She is supposed to make fully functional assassin's bureau in London and liberate the city. Council doesn't know Evie and Jacob are there so she kind of .. blackmails them to do what she wants or she will tell on them and they will be kick of the brotherhood. But eventually they work things out.

I have informant Ian who is also for Jacob. He is kind of a psycho and morally grey but welp.

I know it's so many and I'm like creating more whenever something inspires me. It's a total mess but it makes me happy 🥰

I almost forgot! Octavia the doctor for Otso Berg, finding out that his daughter isn't sick but poisoned by abstergo.

I have no oc for Bayek (except one lil oc who is a child Bayek and Aya kind of adopts) because I have so much respect and Aya and I'm in such an awe for Bayeks love I feel like I would be disrespectful if I made OC to be with him.

1. When are you usually online?

It honestly varies as of late. College has really kept me busy and muse varies between my blogs. My schedule can become really inconsistent at times, but I’m almost always online in some way, but it varies when and if I have the energy to reply to things. Muse has been fickle as well. I would say I am almost always online on the weekends.

2. What verses are you involved in?

I have a ton of random au’s on my blog: pirate au, vampire au, werewolf au, crossover verses, historical au’s, some very slight modern au’s. But for fandoms, I am involved in t.urn w.ashington’s s.pies fandom, r.dr2, l.eft 4 d.ead, a.ssassin’s c.reed, d.ragon a.ge, general western. I am usually more active in the t.urn rpc as of recently because the r.dr2 rpc has been kinda dead as of recently, same as l.4rd, and a.ssassin’s c.reed. I also have been writing r.dr2 for around 3 years or so and I think I’m slowly burnt out on it at times. With the recent uptick in t.urn blogs (but it’s still a small rpc) and how Lydia has become really popular on my blog and the investment of dynamics for her oc (which I really cherish), I have been more involved in the t.urn rpc because it’s an interest I fell back in. So a lot of my muses have been getting an amrev verse to suit that interest, but I am still into my other fandoms! Just college has kept me a bit busy and has kept muse fickle and selective. Luckily, my mutuals have been very supportive of my weird schedule and varying muse levels.

3. What is your biggest RP pet peeve?

I think force shipping tbh. It hasn’t happened in a while, but it just adds a lot of pressure onto me and I fall out of interest in the thread/interaction quickly if people just assume things. I work off chemistry and I only ever work with off the cuff shipping with mutuals I talk to regularly. But still, I prefer chemistry over anything else and I have had a few surprising dynamics that have come out of shared chemistry that I never would’ve expected. 

4. Are you drawn to specific types of muses?

Usually my muses have death involved in their story somewhere so that might be my type lmao.  I usually pick side characters or character I genuinely think I could develop. Like Hewlett, Evie, & Jacob. Sadly, I tend to attract muses that have little to no screen time in their media. Overall, I tend to enjoy morally grey characters with a ton of complex characteristics. I tend to drift more towards villains, but overall, I like a mixture. I don’t think I could fully write a “hero” character (the closest may be Hewlett, Varric, or Evie and Jacob, but they both have shady actions). I do really enjoy grey characters with a heart of gold (Cassie, Lydia, Sean, Kieran). The reason why I added Hewlett & Abe to my muse list is because I thought i could add more development to them compared to the writers lmao.

5. Are there reoccurring themes in your writing that people might not notice?

Themes? Like messages? Not so much, it more of depends on the character I suppose. Overall, I tend to really like introspection and really get in my muses’s minds. Sometimes my muse tends to focus on the other person more than themself, but I like a character analysis lens that looks through their thoughts and experiences. I try to sorta shift my writing style to that muse, but try to keep it somewhat consistent to my own (whatever that writing style really is). I guess death? idk it’s a trend among my muses. 

6. What are your favourite RP trends?

I honestly can’t keep up with rp trends recently, but I think the whole banner on asks. I always have a rough time with the usual ask reply system and while tagging can be messy, it’s a lot easier to format and to trim a thread with adding a banner for an answered ask in a text post than using tumblr’s own ask reply system. It has its cons, but I think I prefer that and it looks prettier imo. I also like interest trackers though people hardly use them.

7. What is your process for starting a new story with someone?

I can be really shy, but I occasionally post plotting calls, ask memes, and inbox calls. That’s the eaisest way or to outright message me. With my schedule, I have been slacking on sending asks to people on my dash and answering those asks. So, recently, I would say messaging me and figuring out a plot for liking an inbox call is the easiest atm.

8. How do you feel about duplicates?

I don’t really have duplicate anxiety. I never had anyone steal from me, but I hope people don’t because of all the hard work I put into them. I actually like duplicates because usually, I have another muse I eagerly want to write with them, even if I already write that muse. Like for example, I am always eager to interact with another Sean, but those blogs tend to not last long. I think since i was 10, but on tumbl rpc, I think it was early 2018. It was a little bit before r.dr2 came out.

10. Is there a muse or verse you could write in, but haven’t?

I have various oc ideas I want to toy with, but worry about adding too many muses that I overwhelm myself. I toyed with a few other turn canons, but nothing ever stuck. I want to write more of Cassie & Eleanor though.

I have various verse ideas, so I would say my vampire verses and werewolf verses that I would like to explore more. Or Evie’s da or historical verse (like her in the amrev time period, but really any time period as long as I am knowledgeable of it). I also really like my crossover r.dr2 verses (like Jacob & Evie’s verse). I really, really want to try an arranged marriage au with a lot of plotting with one of my mutuals.

okay so consider i haven’t really played assassin’s creed origin yet (only did like 3 mission at my dad’s place since i don’t own the game and he does)  so i won’t include Bayek and Aya because i can’t really say. Also won’t include ac chronicles cause i didn’t play them ..tho i’m pretty sure i would love Shao Jun

So let’s start this - this is very subjective and based on how i enjoyed both the game and characters themselves. I don’t actually dislike anyone in this list, I’m rather neutral about the last ones

10. Arno - AC unity was a big disappointment to me and Arno was so like …transparent …what is Arno like ? IDk …i dont dislike him either tbh it’s just that i barely remember he exists

9. Jacob - tbh i put him here because i remember him more than Arno and there was no other place left. He should listen to his sister more. Like i don’t have a lot to say on him ???? I like him but heeeeh. i only played syndicate once just like unity and i would rather play AC2 or AC3 for the 10th time than replay it…so i’m only saying this from memory.

8. Altaïr - I never was very fond of Altaïr but i can’t put him lower for his importance and stuff i guess. I prefer fanon Altaïr to canon Altaïr.

7.Evie - very smart, freckles, could kill me, good(i know they could all kill me)

6. Edward - I prefered Adewalé (i saw he has a dlc, freedom cry i think ? i will buy it someday)

5. Shay - I think he’s just neat

4. Aveline - I wish she had a bigger game. She had the only game with a female protagonist and NO male protagonist choice (syndicate…odyssey  ….like it’s cool and all but is ubisoft scared to make a game solely with a female protag ??) . Also …she has a nice hat and hair and a Machete

3. Haytham - I can’t justify this ….I read assassin’s creed forsaken for him

2. Ezio - I’m being unoriginal but I just love Ezio …the first ac game i played was brotherhood and then AC2 and revelation so there’s a nostalgia thing going on too but it’s also probably because he was the most developped character in the whole series (i mean 3 games, books, a sad short about his death etc)

1. Connor - Underappreciated character - I love him and his story. I just want him to be happy. TBH i usually can’t choose between him and Ezio but while looking for the character list i saw a top of ac protags and he was last and i’m very petty so i’m putting my boy first. Also he’s been my computer lock screen since 2012 and i’m not planning on changing it.

God, the fact that Ialai and Sadeas used to ply their political prowess and manipulation powers to get people to fight Dalinar so they could eliminate people without the use of assassins is just like....yeah, OF COURSE the betrayal in Way of Kings went down like it did. That was CLASSIC, that was something they’d probably talked about doing to other people back when they were all friends. That’s exactly the sort of scheme that Sadeas would probably have encouraged Gavilar to pull on any of the highprinces who were refusing to fall in line. And it’s just so...frustrating that Dalinar never, ever thought that those machinations could have fallen on him and his. It’s right there, right there, all along--Sadeas is the crafty one. And Dalinar trusted him anyway, and I’m. Upset.

I’m really glad that we don’t have to worry about him in the present day, but also like. We haven’t heard from Ialai at all this book. Wth is she planning.

Rant - Rise of the Isle of the Lost

(alternative title: i read rise of the isle of the lost so you don’t have to)

first off i’m probably biased but if you got something out of my opinions in the past then maybe you’ll find this interesting as well.

there are spoilers, obviously, but if you ask me, you really don’t have to read the book, save your money. (i put a short summary under the cut so you know what’s going on)

i’m gonna be honest this turned more into “i’m picking this book apart” than just a rant lmao. i blame the excessive amount of cinemasins i’ve been watching over the past few days.

and be warned - this is gonna be LONG and not very nice.

~summary if you haven’t read the book~ Arabella (Ariel’s niece) snatched the trident to fuck around, causes a storm, and loses it in the ocean. Waves carry it through the barrier to isle territory, because the barrier is penetrable for a short amount of time due to Arabella’s magic fuckery i think.

Uma hears a rumor that the trident is here, but she has no way to get to it before someone else finds it.

Captain Hook hosts a race where everyone can enter with anything that can swim, the price is a pirate ship. Uma wins the race and now has a ship and a pirate crew consisting of Harry, Gil and a few others.

Through Sophie (Yen Sid’s apprentice) they learn that Ursula’s golden seashell necklace is on the Isle of the Doomed (where Maleficent’s castle is) and they sail there to find it, because there’s enough magic left in it to guide them to the trident or something.

They find the trident but then Mal&Co show up.

While all this is happening Arabella tells the rotten four that she lost the trident, and through the magic mirror they find out where it is, and that a lot of people on the isle of the lost are looking for it, so they set out to find it first. FGM catches them as they try to steal a boat that belongs to Ben’s family, but Ben shows up to convince FGM that it was fine. The five of them then drive the boat to the barrier, where Mal pokes a hole and calls the trident to her, just as Uma is about to get her hands on it, overpowering Uma.

There’s also a sideplot where Ben goes to the great wall of China with Lonnie to solve a conflict between two villages but this is all totally irrelevant.

and just to get this out of the way - don’t give me that “it’s a book for children” bs. just because it’s for a younger demographic doesn’t mean it can’t be good.

ok let’s start with the things i liked:

- Lonnie has a sword (which is a clear sign of lesbianism)

- Jane wants to do magic and she wants to help people fairy godmother style. i love this because 1. it gives her more personality and 2. it’s exactly how i imagined her lmao.

- Mal uses magic despite the magic ban.

- i like Gil, he’s kinda cute. and Harry too, and the dynamic between him and Uma and Gil. (ot3 anyone?)

now to the cons:

- Harry has this obsession with his hook (which he has to hold in his hand cause he still has both hands) which i find interesting, it has so much angst potential but i already know i’m gonna have to write a fic about that myself cause it’s gonna be hella disappointing in the movie because either 1. it’s not talked about at all or 2. it’s only good for a joke or two. (”oh no! my hook!” cue sitcom laugh track)

- the use of the word “guyliner”

- CJ is Harry’s younger sister, Harriet is his older sister. the gastons twins are gil’s brothers. Melissa de la Cruz *grasping at straws*: conSisTEnCy

- speaking of consistency, the anti-heroes club isn’t mentioned once, in case you were wondering.

- there’s another school besides dragon hall on the isle, it’s called Serpent Prep. like, i know there are characters (mostly Uma) who appear now for the first time without being mentioned before, ever. i can forgive that. but making up a whole new school just adds to the confusion of how big the isle actually is, and it’s also completely redundant.  this world just feels like a car accident where more cars keep crashing into the wrecks that are already blocking the street.

- carlos being in favor of the magic ban. what. remember how he was a slave for the better part of his life? “people should learn to live without magic” suck my toe (i made another post about what i think of the magic ban here)

- idk if this is on melissa de la cruz or what but the writing is just. not good. the sentences are boring, the use of adverbs is weird, the characters are shallow, the worldbuilding is.. idk how to describe it. it’s like when you look at the window of a shop and it looks nice, but when you enter it’s empty. or like a cardboard facade.

- all the characters do and say the things that are most obvious for them, but nothing beyond that. there’s no life in the characters and the world doesn’t draw you in.

- also the pacing is awful. in my first reading session i read about a third but it felt like nothing had happened. there’s so much setting up (and most of it is boring, it feels like every character just appears for their mandatory line but it has no relevance) and i’m just waiting for the plot.

- janelos. if you’re a janelos shipper than good for you, but i’m not and i’m salty. they could have such a great platonic relationship, why why why does it have to be romantic? (don’t bother, i already know the answer) they had a scene together, which was kinda sweet (through my platonic goggles), but “her laugh is cute�� is not fucking enough to make a romantic relationship believable. 

their entire romantic relationship is built on “he was a boy, she was a girl” and nothing else.

- also devie. i’m pretty indifferent to this ship in general but the way it’s portrayed is so lackluster, like. doug shows up (for no other reason than showing up at least once in this book), is called evie’s boyfriend and that’s kinda it. we didn’t see how they got together, we don’t see what their relationship is like (except doug sorta putting evie on a pedestal), it’s just.. kinda there. wow. so much feeling.

there’s so much time wasted on meaningless worldbuilding that there’s no time left for giving life to the characters and their relationships. (actually there would be time, the book is not that long)

- (safe for uma, harry and gil) this book doesn’t even try to get me to like the main characters and completely relies on the fact that i already know and like them from preceding works.

- there’s always a parallel plot with Ben going on in every book, which is.. not terrible, but especially in this one it’s very distracting from the main plot, besides, what he’s doing is rarely all that interesting.  he’s travelling with lonnie and they had a nice scene together but it ended before it got anywhere near interesting. (Lonnie was about to get character development but then it was about Ben the end)

- not that i dislike ben, or that i don’t care for what he’s doing, but his sideplot is kinda just there so that is already short book isn’t even shorter. in the last book it had at least something to do with what the others were doing, but this time it doesn’t have any significance to the main storyline whatsoever. imo they should’ve just cut the whole bit out and put this content somewhere else, idk, give him his own diary or something, but now it’s just annoyingly strewn throughout the actual story.

(edit: you know what nevermind, this whole plotline is bullshit i’m not even gonna go into it but they punch a whole into the great wall of china and i crave Death™)

- the room that is taken up by ben’s sideplot could’ve been used to elaborate the relationships between the characters, or the characters’ inner lives. this book does so much tell not show that everything feels flat. “they’re best friends, they’re boyfriend/girlfriend, they love each other very much” ya thanks for telling me but is anything gonna happen to back these statements up or

- there’s an entire page that’s basically a montage of the pirate crew repairing Uma’s ship and it’s hella redundant (just like 50% of the book tbh)

- somehow interesting scenes are left out and when the plot is picked up again it’s “this happened and now we’re somewhere else”.

- the other characters get a sideplot too, which would be nice except they all have like 1 character trait and it’s all pretty meaningless. plus, the chapters are all super short and jumping between plotlines all the damn time is annoying.

- new characters appear just to be a plot device. happened with freddie and maddie in book 2, happens now with Arabella in book 3. she’s the niece of Ariel, but we don’t know who her mother is (based on her being described as wearing purple i’m gonna guess it’s Alana) which is excuable because i guess you can’t expect the readers to know all the names of Ariel’s sisters, but it just adds to her being a throwaway character. $100 that Arabella won’t appear in dd2. 

- actually, going off on a tangent about maddie here, wasn’t her background story basically the same as uma’s? that she was a friend of Mal’s when they were little? whatever happened to her, guess well never know cause she’s never gonna appear again.

- new things are made up just for convenience, or idk maybe it’s supposed to flesh out the world but it all feels so disjointed and loveless.  the annual seaside festival (i think it’s called?) where king triton whips out the old trident to give Arabella an opportunity to lose the trident in the first place, the R.O.A.R. competiotion (i forgot what that’s short for too, but it’s a mix of parcour and fencing, whatever) just to give Jay some other purpose besides “is also there” instead of, idk, an actual personality and inner life (but the VK’s dealing with the aftermath of growing up on the Isle is probably too serious and scawy uwu) like idk it’s probably the same in a lot of other stories, but instead of giving life to this world it all feels meaningless (like 98% of wicked world tbh)

- Lonnie has an older brother who wants to launch a hiphop career, and his name is Li’l Shang, which is an absolute fucking joke and takes the cake for worst name in this franchise.

- Ursula’s golden seashell is on the isle because for some reason it didn’t make it to Auradon where it was supposed to be displayed at the museum. i get that they want to use what they can from disney movies but this is just bullshit. the seashell being on the isle makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

- the critical overuse of the word “swaggered”

- seriously it’s like de la cruz saw one of those “words to use instead of walked”- tumblr posts and picked two (swaggered and sauntered)

- almost halfway through, wondering if there’s gonna be a plot

the things in this story just sorta happen, there’s no real suspense curve.

- ok this is really subjective but “Lost Revenge” for a name for a ship is so unnecessarily edgy lmao

- i’m writing most of this stuff as i come across it and at this point i’m just groaning in agony. they just introduced a new character, Sophie, who is Yen Sid’s sorcerer’s intern. intern for sorcery. on the isle of the lost. sure. also, apparently yen sid brought her with him when he moved to the isle like???? i mean the people of auradon already didn’t give a shit about the children that were born on the isle, but they just let yen sid take a little girl with him??? what the fffffffff (also sophie is another throwaway character that will never appear again. i’m blaming this on the fact that there are approximately 462 different canons in this franchise and we don’t get the chance to get attatched to characters that only function as plot devices in whatever canon they appear in)

- a new character called Charlie is introduced as the village elder of Stone Village (china, next to the wall) and he’s only a few years older than ben. he’s the descendant of ??? (molly and arthur weasly, probably) (seriously this is a throwaway character if i’ve ever seen one)

- mal’s morals are inconsistent. she has no problem using her spellbook for minor inconveniences but doesn’t want to steal a boat because it’s not the auRaDOn wAy.

- evie scolding mal for using the spellbook too often because that way she’ll never learn to live without magic (yadda yadda) but she also does this when mal opens a gate with magic in order to get to the boat they are going to steal, even though the matter is pretty time-sensitive and they had no other way of getting around that gate. like i get the idea of “solving problems without magic”, but this was really not the time to play moralizer, evie.

- there’s a yacht club building and FGM is giving it a new coat of paint with her wand solving problems without magic eat my entire ass.

she keeps using her wand!!! what the fuck!!!!

- i’m not going to go into detail over this but everything falls into place so conveniently that there aren’t really any obstacles to overcome and every conflict is solved within a matter of sentences.

- there are small cliffhangers every 200 words because it keeps jumping between plotlines. before you even get the chance to get into one of the plotlines it’s over again and it takes ages for anything to move along cause the stories keep interrupting each other.

- i’m losing my fucking mind over here as we speak. FGM catches the rotten four trying to steal a boat and she seriously thinks sending them back to the isle is an appropriate punishment. this is absolutely ludicrous and completely disproportionate. “this is exactly what we feared when we let villains into Auradon” they! are! children! (i know technically they’re teens but this doesn’t change the fact that imprisoning them on the isle again is super fucking cruel) i can’t believe how terribly literally everything is handled in this goodforsaken fantasy world. (not to mention that this is an insult to the character of FGM)

- so it’s been established that Mal can turn back time and she uses it when Uma reaches the trident. mal turns back time, uma doesn’t have the trident yet. so far so good, right?

look, i know time travel stuff is always prone to plotholes, but this is just ridiculous. 1. when she first uses it she comes to the conclusion “those with villain blood appear to be immune”, because evie wasn’t affected by it. it works on uma (though she remembers reaching the trident but doesn’t understand what happened) and it’s not made clear how it actually affects someone with villain blood. the setup for this whole shtick was weak. idk if i explained that well enough but you can ask me if you want a more detailed explanation i still have salt left lmao. 2. through carlos we know the others felt it happending, but what about ben? they don’t explain it to him even though he should have no memory of mal turning back time. 3. this book had all the time in the world to make this universe’s rules of time travel a little more clear (like why did nothing happen to both uma’s row boat and the speedboat? do objects not get set back in time too?) 4. one rule was explained tho: “it only turns back time to the top of the hour, and only if it’s been less than fifteen minutes” so mal might only have turned back time for like 1 minute, which would explain why the boats remain in the same spot, but it doesn’t change the fact that everything conveniently falls into place again because it just so happens to be *just* the right time for it to work (meaning no more than 15 minutes after a full hour) which in turn makes me wonder why this “top of the hour” rule was established in the first place. they could’ve just left that bit out and this whole thing wouldn’t be another case of dumb luck for the protagonists. i guess i’ll just go fuck myself.

- ok safe for that time travelling bs the last third is actually a lot okay-er than the rest. there was a cool scene where harry fell down a hole and was scared an panicking. this and the whole pirate-crew-escapes-from-a-trap-filled-cave was the best part of the book imo.

- after the great showdown between uma and mal (where they’re not actually face to face due to the barrier and thick fog, which is kind of a cool way to safe their encounter for the movie, i’ll give them that) mal stumbles backwards when she caught the trident and accidentally knocks evie overboard, which is completely unnecessarily dramatic, because the climax is already over, and is just there to show once again how gay mal and evie are for each other, without actually delivering. same old. (there’s also a scene where evie looks at mal “with a fond smile” while she’s sleeping like come on. those two scenes contain more feeling than any interaction between ben and mal ever. and at the end there is an exchange between the two that literally, like word for word, draws parallels to an interaction between ben an mal like are you kidding me)

- Evie says several times that Mal shouldn’t use magic, which is not too out of character i guess, i mean Evie has enough baggage concerning magic that this is believable.

she did use her mirror a lot, which is clearly magic, but somehow this is different from mal solving a problem with her spellbook?? hypocritical much. and it kinda retcons on the whole setup of her not being comfortable with magic.

in the end she gives her mirror to the museum, but it wasn’t her idea. it would’ve tied in with her previous statements a lot better if she herself had been like “i should give up my mirror so i have consistent characterization”

- Audrey dumps Chad for reasons unknown. not that i care all that much about that ship (i do think it’s interesting tho) but idk is this just so the movie doesn’t have to explain why they aren’t together anymore? (would be kinda lazy) felt like it was just there for cheap laughs.

- i’m surprised Jay didn’t get an Obligatory Love Interest™ but actually i’m not surprised because none of the writers care about jay.

- you might remember R.O.A.R. (the fencing/sword fighting-parcour-clusterfuck-sport). so chad was the captain of the team and has practised sword fighting all his life, but jay manages to beat him after a total amount of? 3? or so hours of training? and immediately becomes the new captain? bull

- also jay is supposedly really good at parcour, right? but he needed to practise wall jumps cuz his technique was bad or something for some reason. why tho. isn’t parcour his forte and why did carlos make the team before jay did. like not saying he can’t do roar but come on.

honestly tho, i kinda set myself up for this. i mean i already didn’t like the second book but for some reason i thought this one was going to be different.

the writing, characterization, worldbuilding etc. is just really lazy to me, and tbh i think it just exists to squeeze more money out of this franchise.

After all, he’s our king and she’s, like, the unofficial princess of the Isle - it’s a smart move in uniting our worlds and they seem really happy together; plus, if she’s with him, she’ll probably never go evil, which is good considering she probably has dragon-powers and that would be terrifying. I think if I had to pick just one for him it would be my cousin @ava-tremaine. I’m all for all of my little Tremaines ending up on some throne because let’s face it, they’re all regal and gorgeous as heck. Ava keeps it real and she’s hilarious and gorgeous and she and Liam could be interesting together but I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that he and @faciliersfreddie would make way too gorgeous of a couple. Plus they’ve got that star-crossed angle working for them, they’re musically gifted, and can we talk about their faces?! Good Lord, if they had a baby, it would be automatically the most beautiful baby in the world. Since she’s proven to like Gamma Chi boys, what about @emmettvardaros? He’s single now and proven to be a good boyfriend, which is what Miss Evangeline needs. Plus he’s kind of got an Auradon’s Most Eligible Bachelor thing going on about him, and sorority and fraternity presidents ending up together? Wouldn’t it be so romantic?! And imagine the mixers that would be born from it. If that doesn’t tickle your tastebuds though, maybe her and @happyevieafter could make it work! Let’s do the math - they’re both gorgeous, both close to the crown, both good at seeming royal, and Evie could make sure Evangeline was always the best dressed at any event. I mean, Lina did throw Evie a ball last year, hello?! And it’d be the easiest thing ever for them to double date with Ben and Mal, oh gosh, I’m convincing myself!

@jimdubs: I used to ship @abigailtremaine with Liam when it came to the Dubois brothers, but upon further reflection, I think Jimmy might be more her speed. And that’s assuming she doesn’t stay with her fittie of a boyfriend, but hey, weirder things have happened! Jimmy is hot and funny and has a voice like melting butter and my cousin has proven to like at least two of those things. If Jimmy and Abby don’t work for you though, I would also be down for him and @lexi-la-bouff. I know everyone expects him and @maddielabouff and trust me, I love the girl - she’s a great riding partner - but it’s sooooo cliche at this point and his little Valentine’s Day video?
