this just reminds me so distinctly of my 4000 level/graduate mixed literature classes. i had classmates talk about how difficult the classes were, how strict the professors were, how they were barely scraping by with Ds and Cs on essays. one or two people confided in me while we waited for the previous class to let out that they were afraid they were going to fail.

meanwhile, i was begging the professors after class to grade me on a graduate level (so that i could write longer essays lmfao) and i was pulling literal perfect scores on almost everything i submitted...even when i didn't even read the fucking book.

it boggled my mind because i'm largely self taught as a writer and i've never been a particularly intelligent or intellectual person; i'm not super well read. i re-read the same books over and over when i was 16 and read things below my reading level for my childhood years. yes, i went to college a decade later than most (and age can help with perspective!) but i worked in a factory before that and hated school growing up.

more importantly, this wasn't a beginner english course; everyone was at the same education as me or higher!!! HALF the class was working on a masters! 3/4+ of these people were creative writing majors.

and many of them were doing much worse than me for reasons i couldn't parse.

until i overheard several of them talking about a book we were reading where a character was in a situation that made them feel trapped, wherein the narrative used a birdcage (and the character feeling shrunk to fit inside it) as a metaphor for this.

and they all thought the character was literally being shrunk down to the size of a parakeet and shoved into a birdcage! they were actively discussing their confusion over this happening "out of nowhere" before class. i can't even make this shit up.

i'm sorry? that you don't understand what a metaphor is? and when the narrative is being metaphorical in the limited perspective of a character? oof.

this was around 2014. before tiktok. before the death of media literacy was something being actively discussed online the way it is now.

so shit where people mock "growled" and such... it's like, there are two options here: either they're doing this for clicks (just complaining about anything just to have something to complain about, since people love negative video content) or they're actually just media illiterate.

and in my experience watching booktube, it's oftentimes both of these things together. in a creator's quest to make a negative video, booktubers reach for low-hanging fruit to get more videos out faster, and in doing this they oftentimes completely misunderstand something in the book they're talking about, or actively miss something that contradicts their point later. because it's like, if you're posting 3 videos a week about books (for example), you literally do not have time to read these books thoroughly AND do deep, thought-provoking videos about them. you only have time for the lowest-hanging fruit because you have to still edit the video, do thumbnails, do a description for the video, and start reading the next book. that doesn't even include the booktubers that have patreons with extra rewards to keep up with.

like the amount of criticism i've seen in booktube videos were the critique is just the creator actively misunderstanding the words in the sentence (or the sentence in the larger context of the novel) is astounding—and I even notice this regarding books I've never even read myself, where just the context of the full sentence is being completely misunderstood in the pursuit of grabbing low-hanging fruit to complain about for clicks, because negative videos get way more traffic than positive ones.

I lost my access to mental healthcare when the state cut it from the budgets for my rural area and I no longer have a single option I can afford.

Blanket statements like "there's no excuse in 2022" are harmful because not everyone can access help and assistance.

idk who's saying that therapy is affordable as a poor person, but i'ma just hijack this post (sorry op, know that you and i are agreeing) and put this out there because this is an important subject:

therapy isn't affordable to everyone, and bad therapy can do more harm than good. you cannot make broad generalizations because you have no idea what someone's financial situation is. you don't know how poor they are in comparison to you. you don't know if they have more money, cutting a lot of 'free' options out, but still not enough to afford appointments that can be about $500 w/out insurance.

you can talk about your situation and how you make such-and-such money each year and so this is what you did. you SHOULD do that, because it will give someone in a similar situation ideas they might not have had. but just saying, "i'm poor and i got it, you're just making excuses" is helping nobody and just making you look fucking stupid and cruel to boot.

for those needing therapy: it's important to look for options, or have a friend help you if you feel overwhelmed/incapable. google is a big tool. if you have a job, ask about eap. search as much as you can, because it's important to try and it's important not to give up. with a lot of effort and a bit of luck, you'll hopefully find something that not only works, but works for you.

I have plenty of AUs that occur as reblog chains. I've had people write fics based on my AU posts! I don't mind others playing in the sandbox.

I just get annoyed when:

people try to add on to AUs that are already their own narrative that I'm really obviously working on - e.g. if someone tried to reblog with add-ons for AatJB, which is tens of thousands of words and over a dozen posts, I'd be really annoyed. Meanwhile, someone reblogging the "Ahsoka and Quinlan team-up to thirst trap the holonet" shitpost with multiple paragraphs of added commentary is completely fine. - This doesn't apply to mutuals

people reblogging to expansive AUs I'm in the middle of working on with "I should write this" or "free plotbunny" and so on - Again, I don't care if it's on one of the shorter or messier shitposts! But people do this to the ones where I've actually written a few thousand words of prose and the general implication is "OP had a good idea but I'm pretty sure someone else, like me, could do better" - Like... ask first, please. There are people that have written 8k fics based on my AUs that I've loved and it's great! But like. They didn't just assume. - This also doesn't apply to mutuals

try to hijack a post for their own AU - happened a few times, they removed a central element in order to squeeze it into their own universe/AU

where someone removes multiple central elements to make it more palatable to them - I made a post where the ONLY POINT was crackship A/B and someone reblogged with 'but B/C is so much better' and that's the branch that got reblogged the most - Please just make your own post with a 'this was inspired by' credit.

This. This this this this this a hundred times. "Normal" is a horrible and misleading term that's made life miserable for people.

Without going into too many details for the Why/What that lead to this, I preface this by saying I'm turning thirty-five this year.

I've had regular (time-wise) cycles since I was ten or eleven. Heavy and painful, with many of them so debilitatingly painful I've nearly thrown up or have thrown up.

about eight years ago, I found out my body is trying to kill me (again, not going into details) and in an attempt to slow that down, I was put on a ton of medications... which I'd never had to do before.

They always tell you there will be minor side effects while your body adjusts but things will go back to "normal".

For me it was weight gain. I asked, multiple times, if that was a side effect and was told "no" and "try a more active life style/better diet"

I work a very physically demanding job and I eat once a day if I remember. No one asked me any of that.

More importantly it threw my cycle out of whack. I stopped having heavy cycles. The mood swings progressively got worse and I still felt the nausea and cramps from the depths of Hell, but I barely expelled any blood.

I got my first hormone panel three years ago. After finally looking into the medications and realising all of them cause hormone imbalance. (hormones. y'know. one of those things that controls metabolism...and weight control :|)

I told my obgyn (first visit, I'd never needed to go because sex-repulsed ace/no history of female health related medical issues) the myriad of problems I was going through, but those specific to my cycle... ""hormone panel"" was just estrogen.

Results were "normal".

I agreed to an invasive ultrasound (that was done by a trainee with no supervision and i never want to do that again) and despite hearing them mention they did see something, it was attributed to the ongoing illness and marked as benign.

"Normal".

Told my primary six months later, because it was getting worse. Asked for a full hormone panel.

Still only estrogen tested. Still "normal."

Last year I had to fight tooth and nail to get a fucking obgyn appointment because it got so bad. I had to reschedule three fucking times and finally just went to a new doctor who finally fucking listened and did a full panel.

Female hormones were still all "normal". testosterone production, however, was almost three times what it should have been and they finally put me on BC that (hopefully) isn't fucking with any of my other meds.

The only thing it's done is essentially jumpstarted menopause for me. And I don't know what to ask to get help, anymore, because it hasn't helped the cramps. it hasn't helped the nausea. it hasn't helped the mood swings. It just stopped the expulsion of blood.

The point of all this though?

When you know something is wrong and they tell you it's in "acceptable parameters that are normal"? It's normal for an average. It isn't normal, necessarily, for you. Because, usually... if it was... you wouldn't be getting those labs in the first place.

When a chronically ill or disabled person gets their lab tests back as “normal” or all clear, we aren’t sad because we WANT to be sick.

We’re sad because we *know* there’s something wrong with us, yet the scans still stay clear.

People have a horrible tendency of forgetting that polls like that are made for fun and not for any serious reason. There are a lot of people, though, who do take these polls too far and get angry when their favorite character or ship doesn't win. I see it a lot on Twitter, so I'm unfortunately not surprised that it also happens on Tumblr.

Regardless how you feel about whichever contestant or option, it's never right to harass people who prefer the other. And it's never right especially to harass the person who made the poll. People do have different brands of humors, but there are a lot of ways that jokes can be taken the wrong way--and even then, there are people who are being genuinely serious in their desire for their preferred option to win.

It's exhausting, embarrassing, and rude. Polls are meant to be fun, not to spark a war. If the person who made the poll got overwhelmed by what was happening, they're perfectly in their right to cut the poll short if it's best for their health. Someone's health is always more important than what the end results of a poll will be.

I've been on Twitter. I've participated in some polls. I've voiced which option I prefer and I've been disappointed when they lost. But I have--and will--never, ever attack the other side because my side lost. I will never harass the person who made the poll for any reason whatsoever. It's about being respectful and showing good sportsmanship, and not allowing the anonymity that the internet provides influence how I treat people I will never meet in real life. Because that's a whole-ass person on the other side. And you have to be ready and willing to accept disappointment gracefully if losing or cancellation does end up happening.

I don't understand the appeal of hating other ships or harassing a poll-creator. It's just so vitriolic and makes literally everyone else upset. If you are so upset about it that you need to talk about it, isn't it better to complain or vent to friends in private instead? Anything's better than hurting other people.

I'm just. Ugh. I don't understand why it's such a trend nowadays. I hope the person who made the poll is doing better. It sucks that they were so overwhelmed that they felt they had to deactivate their blog. It should never have gotten to that extreme in the first place.

Do you mind putting out a statement for some of the shippers out there? I'm not the person who ran the tournament but I've seen a lot of people blog about it in such mean spirit, mostly mocking the person who ran the poll without thinking about the situation or caring really. It's just kinda sad to see a bunch of people give this person so much hate

My worry about talking about it too much publicly is that it'll just bring even more unwanted attention to the situation regardless of what I say. But I do want it to be known that it's really shitty to dogpile anyone especially over something like this. It probably doesn't seem that serious to most but the poll was clearly something op cared about and was investing a lot of time in. They just wanted to have fun like I'm sure most of us did! There's no need to keep punching down and speaking ill of them especially since they're likely still able to see it all. They're a human being with feelings and it was their poll anyways. They're allowed to be frustrated with the situation and do what was right for their peace of mind. It's really disappointing to see people being mean despite this. It's hurtful and not productive in any way.

I really love what you said, there is just one teeny tiny thing I'm gonna nitpick : Toph learned that love is smothering, controlling, infantilizing, negating her right to be her own person. Hence her initial friction with Katara who is somewhat motherly (she had trouble understanding that help doesn't come wih strings attached like renouncing your right to choose for yourself, or your identity to fit someone else's "ideals" (aka her parents' mental image of what the dainty little lady she should be like)). Not just that it was "too kind kindness".

We were cheated from Toko siblingship tbh. 💖 I also think Toph would have vibed with Mai since they suffered rather similar abuse (character erasure, stifling control, lack of boundaries, invisibilization since there is some implication that Mai's parents view her as less important than Tom Tom, and Toph's parents literally hid her existence for the world, I can't recall if it was clearly stated that they did it out of protectiveness or because there was some measure of ableism -which would tie nicely into her friendship/likeness with Zuko-).

Okay, I know we don’t actually see the gold station in CoM; it’s just official merch. But let me be nuts for a second. Why would they design a totally new heart station for CoM Sora merch but keep Riku’s basically the same? Or actually, use basically that same design for his official one? Happy new year let’s get hypothetical

Sora’s BBS station has more gold on it than his current heart station.

Sora’s heart connected with Ven’s at basically its conception, right, so if Sora’s heart was gold, the BBS teal reflects how the green merged with the gold. After Ven’s heart returns to Sora and actually settles there, the green would turn the gold much more blue. Which is what we see in the games.

As for why the background of Sora’s DDD heart station looks like his BBS one… it could be because those memories — Ven’s memories as well as Sora’s own memories from when he was 4 — start surfacing in Sora in DDD.

Although the purple accent of the BBS and DDD station is neat… You wouldn’t get that from green and gold… I wonder if that reflects Sora’s relationship with Riku back then. How close they were as kids. The pink/magenta windows of the tower are also the color of Sora’s Sound Idea/his half of Dearly Beloved.

Lots of love for the Combined Keyblade's paopu keychain and angel/dark motif, but it's also very 👀 that: it's has a crown on thr top as well as a Mickey symbol above the handles; the glass and the lines (?) give it as well as the singular keyblades a very... heart station-y vibe, Door™ included

I'd wonder if it'd be too much of a stretch to assume that both the crown and the Mickey symbol come from the Kingdom Key or something, but it probably is considering that half of this hypothesis requires the necklace theory to the true, and who knows... It would be fun though, because in a way by itself the K.K. already is a channel from Riku to Sora (and its case is interesting as well because why would Riku's original keyblade have crown-shaped teeth if the necklace wasn't originally his as well or something like this......)

this is something that's been in my head since dart was introduced and when i saw a clip of the demogorgon the russians had captured. there's definitely a possibility of a nature vs nurture situation.

like. think about it. they're all connected. it's a hivemind. one demogorgon dies in season 1 and they all know what happened. when it comes to humans, the only thing they know is pain and death, because that's what humans resort to when we encounter something we know nothing about. they're naturally distrustful of us and course they want to harm us before we can harm them. to them, we're at the top of the food chain.

but dustin raised dart from a baby. the only thing dart knows is care and affection. he killed mews because he had just grown again and was hungry. nougat alone wasn't cutting it anymore. i firmly believe that if dustin hadn't've backed him into a corner, dart would have been there to fight off the other demodogs at the junkyard.
