needle and thread

sometimes i wonder if this is what i was meant for.

an unending loop of the same draining day,

dark circles under my eyes extending

until my flesh tears and my skull shows through.

rotting skin is a stench no floral perfume can cover.

no makeup can conceal the gashes over my cheekbones.

i return to the place where i live

(no, it’s not home)

and every night i pierce needles through the baby fat still clinging desperately to my cheeks

(so that is where my youth has gone)

and stitch my pieces together.

day after day

my body withers, and night after night,

i thread a needle and do it over again.
