I think William and Kate are real people and real people go through stuff and not everything is sunshine and roses, so I do agree that going through a big thing like cancer may have changed their relationship in ways we wonât even know. However, there can a be a hundred different reasons for small interactions and we canât know for sure what theyâre feeling in that moment.
For example, my friend who is casual with her interest in the royals saw that video of William and the kids waiting fot Kate and just thought it was funny and cute and didnât think much about it. But I guess for us, maybe we know better or maybe weâre just more prone to overanalyzing their actions? Idk.
Anyway, as I said there can be a hundred different reasons. William may have been aware of how her âhurrying Kateâ was perceived the last time (during the Jordan wedding) and wanted to avoid something similar. However, I think he used to have more gentle ways of reminding Kate to hurry before, so thereâs that. But maybe itâs possible Kate has told him she doesnât like being hurried no matter how he does it and heâs simply following her wishes.
Also, this is Kateâs first time to talk to the public since Christmas 2023, so maybe William had that in mind and didnât want to be seen hurrying Kate in any way because he understood the public would want to talk to Kate. Maybe he also knew a lot of people would want to talk to Kate about her diagnosis, and William isnât really the type to open up to the public during walkabouts about big personal things like that. He keeps it light: anecdotes about the kids or their dogs, Aston Villa, dad jokes. He probably didnât want to be cornered and ambushed about a question about Kateâs illness that would make him vulnerable. Or maybe Kate wanted space to talk to the public about by herself. I also did notice that he was constantly looking for her or trying to see where she was during the walkabout.
I also think we canât always interpret the change as William being callous as if William is the only one wearing the pants in the relationship and everything relies on the change in his feelings. In my own personal opinion and imagination, I think Kate has become more vocal about her boundaries. And if something has changed in their dynamic, I think itâs Kate wanting more individuality in the relationship. But idk this is just a feeling. I know Iâm doing a lot of projection and I canât be sure about my interpretations.
Anyway, maybe it could even be something as mundane as William having stomachache and needing to go to the bathroom and thatâs why he was in a hurry lol. As Iâve said, there could be a hundred different reasons.
To be honest, I'd completely forgotten about the Jordanian wedding.
I was thinking about this moment from one of the garden parties.
(This is one of my favorite photos of them. I love how happy Kate is. I love the firm hand William has on her, like he knows if he lets her go she'll wander away again. I love how ladylike her trailing hand is posed. I love the soft feminine pink of Kate's suit contrasted with the sharp black of William's suit. I love everyone in the background cheesing at them. I love how Mary Poppinseqsue it feels.)

And we start the Chihaya Chapter!
And what better way to start than with Sumio?! This must be a New Year's blessing! Sumio and Yukiya's relationship is always so heartwarming... Sumio missed his little baby brother.
I love his little banter with Masuho-no-Susuki and we get more lore about the time of the previous True Golden Raven (thank you, Sumio).
That flashback conversation with Wakamiya left me like ???? Yukiya is dominating the conversation the whole time??? He really grew up a lot... It's so different from how he used to be.
Anyway, this time around we have new characters like...
...Yui! I love her! She's just a little girl. It breaks my heart to know what happened to her. Btw being called Yui and such, I kinda picture her like Yui from Sakuna of Rice and Ruin, but blind.
Really cool to make her a goze. I read Goze Hotaru some months ago, so I'm still very much fascinated about gozes. It's a really good manga, so check it out if you want (although I must warn you that it got axed by its sales, so the ending feels tasteless).
Going back to the Yatagarasu Series, Abe-sensei writes really great men with internalized mysoginy. And I 100% mean this as a compliment. It's very realistic actually. Idk how to explain, but yeah, good job.
âThen what if it was to meet a woman?â
âThat Chihaya? No way!â
âHow can you say that? Those kinds of guys tend to have the dirtiest minds.â
âHey, does a pure man even exist in this world?â
As if they had just remembered the place they found themselves in, those chatting burst with excitement.
Ichiryuu is still absolutely traumatized by what happened 2 years ago lol. He never forgets.
âDonât bother,â Ichiryuu added with resignation in his voice. âThat right now is his specialty. Heâll feign weakness at first, letting his adversary do nothing but attack, thoroughly tiring the poor soul down, and then and only then he beats the shit out of him.â
The light in Ichiryuuâs eyes had vanished entirely.
âIchiryuu, donât tell meâŚâ Shigemaru gasped.
âYeah. I was once fooled by his looks back at home and picked a fight with himâŚâŚ He beat me up so badly it changed my outlook on life.â
I also noticed that Shigemaru and Ichiryuu became really close, being roommates and all. I'm so glad for them. They should all be friends. Also, Ichiryuu is an excellent senpai.
In any case, I hope all of this points towards Akeru and Chihaya's reconciliation. We'll see what next part will bring us.
The Raven of the Empty Coffin: Chapter 3 "Chihaya" Part 1
Disclaimer: This is a fan-translation japanese-english of the original novel. The events of this novel follow after what's already covered by the anime. For an easier understanding, I recommend first reading the few scenes of previous books I've already translated.

Chapter 3: Chihaya (Part 1)
âBrother, help!â
The second I heard Yuiâs1 throat-rending shriek, the basket in my hands fell. The cotton in it scattered on the ground, kicked every which way as I dashed through the fields. I saw everyoneâs pale faces as I got closerâthey all looked away, avoiding my gaze. Behind their backs was the shed.
The door, usually left open, was tightly closed.
âNo, stopâŚâŚ Brother, brother!â Her voice desperately calling for helpâaccompanied by ceaseless rattling.
âLet it be,â someone said as he grabbed my arm, but there was no way I was going to endure and stand aside. I shook him off and tackled the door with all my might. As it broke open, I forced my way inside.
The shedâs interior was dark.
Opposite the farming tools were bundles of straw, all piled up. There they wereâa familiar man, who had just turned around towards me with a dumbfounded face, and Yui. Her back was against the straw, her skinny, exposed body standing out even in the darkness. Her hair was caught in the straw. He had immobilized her, exposing her throat. The hem of her feather robe was rolled up, baring her thin legsâthe manâs hand was there, plunging towards her depths.
ââMy head went blank.
I donât quite remember what happened afterwards. By the time I came back to myself, the man was already lying on the ground. Blood spilled from his head in unbelievable quantities as I hugged a sobbing Yui, staring at the man in shock. He was completely still.
âKou, what have you doneâŚâŚ!?â someoneâs shrieking voice called to me as I raised my head sluggishly. I knew what I had just doneâand the most likely consequences for my actions.
âThis is bad. Iâve seen people go to the Main Residence already.â
âWe have no time.â
âKou, take Yui and run! Hurry!â
I did as I was told and leaped out of the shed with Yui on my back. In front of me were the wide cotton fields, ready for harvest, shining the purest white like fresh snow. It was through them that I ran and ran with only one goal in mindâthe mountains, where nobody lived.
We had endured and endured and endured, day after day. But no more.
âăăăăăâăăăăă â
Sumio found himself dazzled by the strong sunlight for a second as he left the Unbending Reed Monasteryâs library. He was filled by an instant yearning for the refreshing darkness he had just left behind, his eyes hurting due to the sparkling sun, when a familiar voice called for him.
âSumio? What brings you to a place like this?â
He turned around to find the beaming face of someone he knew. The boy was holding a bunch of books in his hands. âOh, Yukiya! How are you?â
âGood! Thanks to everyoneâs help, Iâve managed to find people I can call friends.â
Despite his current status as a Yamauchi Guard, Sumio was a commoner by birth. However, He and Wakamiya had first met when they were both young, which, among other factors, had led Sumio to become Wakamiyaâs exclusive bodyguard once the Prince returned to Yamauchi. Which meant that Yukiya and Sumio had seen each other every day during Yukiyaâs time working as Wakamiyaâs attendant, so, despite having met not that long ago, it truly felt like quite a while to him.
âWell, trustworthy companions are welcome news. If we donât get more people who can take care of guarding Wakamiya soon, I'm going to get an ulcer.â
Ever since Natsuka had made his support public, Rokon had loaned some of his men to him a number of times, but Sumio didnât wholeheartedly trust Rokon either. To make matters worse, the Yamauchi Guards that had graduated in the last few years had proved to be similarly unreliable. In practice, Sumio was still Wakamiyaâs one and only bodyguard.
âOnce you all become part of the Guard, I should finally be able to breathe easier.â
âOh, donât worry, Iâm doing everything I can to ensure so.â Yukiya gave him quite the bright smile, to which Sumio unconsciously did a double-take. In response, Yukiya tilted his head innocently. âSo, what brings you here, Sumio? Research?â
âOh, yesâŚâŚ A bit.â
âââYouâre on your way back, right? Iâll see you off then.â From the looks of it, Yukiya had noticed the topic wasnât one they could discuss there. He started to walk, accompanying Sumio with the books still in hand.
âWait, shouldnât you be in class at this hour?â
âThe instructors told us to do self-study today for their own convenience. So, as weâll be taking tests for the following ten days, I thought I would try my luck at guessing the questions.â
A ten day period of tests preceded any long vacations at the Monastery. As Yukiyaâs senior had gone through the very same experience a few years ago, Sumio couldnât bring himself to ignore that last part. âDonât dilly-dally. You should study properly for those.â
âNo worries, I donât need to study in the first place. I only have to listen to things once during lessons to memorize everything,â Yukiya responded nonchalantly, but Sumio found his answer just as hard to ignore in a wholly different sense.
Before he could say anything about it however, Yukiya continued in a grave tone, âThe problem is my friends. To be honest, no matter how much I want to help them, I canât even figure out what they are struggling with in the first placeâŚâŚ We were getting nowhere, so Akeru kicked me out of the room.â
Yukiya looked up at the sky in lament as he let out an âIâm uselessâ. Sumio, who still bore the memories of struggling through the Monasteryâs exams, could only let out an empty laugh.
âBy âAkeruâ you mean Lady Masuho no Susukiâs little brother, right? Are his grades bad as well?â
âNo, no. Heâs there as the Study Groupâs teacher. He used to constantly pick fights with the commoners, but it seems he had a change of heart.â
According to Yukiya, Akeru had been quite meek with them at first, too self-conscious over his previous attitude and the way he had ridiculed them all, the more his passion for teaching had grown over time, the more he had opened up to them all.
âHis explanations are accurate and easy to understand, so they all treat him as a god among men now. His current nickname is âLord Professorâ which, you know, is halfway making fun of him, but he hasnât realized that yet so thereâs probably nothing to worry about. All in all, heâs very much like his sister, smart and trustworthyâand just as strong-willed as well.â
âI see,â Sumio forced a smile at that last part.
Masuho no Susuki was known as Yamauchiâs most beautiful princess but, in truth, she also held the top spot in pridefulness as well. She worked under Wakamiyaâs wife as a lady-in-waiting, so Sumio had had many chances to meet her so far, and had clashed with her a similarly high number of timesâthough he had still never beaten her in a single argument.
âBut anyway, what brought you here today, Sumio?â Once he checked their surroundings and confirmed there wasnât anyone around, Yukiyaâs tone changed ever so slightly. âItâs about the incident from a hundred years ago, right?â
Yukiya already knew everything about what happened with the White Raven. In fact, Wakamiya had called him to Sunrise Palace during one of Yukiyaâs breaks and personally explained it all to him. They had all been worried about his reaction, given his absence at the time, but Yukiya didnât seem fazed at all by the revelation that his Lord could, in reality, be an incomplete True Golden Raven.
âMemories going back to the times of Yamauchiâs founding, huh. Quite suspicious in a sense, for them to go back so far.â It was unmistakably a shocking revelation, yet Yukiya had seemed to be doing just fine.
âArenât you surprised?â Wakamiya asked him out of confusion at the time.
âI am pretty surprised!â Yukiya replied jokingly. âBut, whether your memories are incomplete or not, that doesnât change the fact that your existence is necessary for Yamauchi. Iâm more concerned that you think my loyalty would be shaken by something like this.â
âYouâre only saying that because I have the power to fix the tears in the barrier, right? But I donât know anything about why theyâre appearing or what using that power may bring as a result.â
âEven if thatâs the case, itâs still better than doing nothing and letting those tears be, isnât it? That would be stupid,â Yukiya said with a scoff. âNo matter what that power may bring us in the future, itâs not like we have any alternative in the current circumstances. Or are we planning to metaphorically starve to death, stuck hesitating over one potential pitfall?â
âYou have a point, butââ
âThereâs no point in overthinking it, thatâs all,â Yukiya stated firmly, before adding in what seemed to be an attempt at cheering Wakamiya up, âAt the very least, we all know Your Highness loves and cares for Yamauchi more than anyone else. Thereâs no way that power would bring harm to our people, not when used by someone like you. Believe in yourself, itâs fine to be as brazen as usual.â
The memory of Yukiyaâs smile at the time crossed his mind, and Sumio sighed inwardly. Yukiya may not have given it too much importance, but Natsuka and Wakamiya himself were quite preoccupied by these True Golden Raven memories. Most of all Natsuka, who had since dedicated much of his energy into scouring the documents left at the Imperial Court.
Unfortunately, a lack of records from that era meant they didnât have much to show for their efforts, but they had still slowly managed to get a grasp on the circumstances behind the True Golden Ravenâs disappearance at the other side of the Gate.
He vanished in the spring of the Year 28 of the Bright Tortoise.
Just like the White Raven had told them, the Forbidden Gate had been open at the time and the True Golden Raven had been constantly going in and out from the Holy Precincts found at the other side. His name was Naritsuhikoâhe was Yamauchiâs ruler four generations preceding the current Acting Golden Raven.
A drought during his mid-twenties aside, there hadnât been any calamities worth naming during his otherwise stable and peaceful rule, but then, one day, a massive earthquake shook all of Yamauchi. It was then recorded that Naritsuhiko crossed the Forbidden Gate and left for the Holy Precincts to consult Yamagamiâs divine willâand never returned.
However, thanks to Natsukaâs research, they had recently discovered that one of Naritsuhikoâs trusted vassals had accompanied him on his trip to the Forbidden Gate that fateful day.
âAnd, no matter how I think about it, there is more to that than may appear at first glance. I mean, he went into the Forbidden Gate together with his Lord, but this man and this man alone returned safely to Yamauchi.âÂ
âSo youâre telling me that he left the True Golden Raven behind at the Holy Precincts and came back all by himself?â
âExactly. On top of that, his professional trajectory after his return to Yamauchi was all but conventional. He ultimately became the Yellow Raven.â
At that moment, Yukiyaâs eyes went so wide with shock they may well have fallen. âWait, then thatâs Land Sovereign2 Eiju weâre talking about!â
The Yellow Ravenâalso known as Land Sovereign, his respective honorific title3. Acquiring such a position meant to be entrusted with command over all state affairs, so it was one only given with the unanimous approval of all officials in the Imperial Court.
The Yellow Raven was the one and only person with the right to rule the country in place of their Lord, be it because the Golden Ravenâeither Acting or Trueâwas still too young to do so, or because the Golden Ravenâs capability for governance had been put into question for any other reason.
Not every generation necessarily had a Yellow Raven, but it was the highest position anyone could achieve at the Imperial Court. A title only given to high-ranking officials who had written their names in history.
âThe very same. The Imperial Court was left in disarray after the Forbidden Gate closed and His Majesty Naritsuhiko disappeared, and that's when he became the young Crown Princeâs guardian.â With that, he single-handedly attained complete control over the Court and rose up to the position of Land Sovereign.
Land Sovereign Eiju, according to what information they had gathered on him, was originally a South-affiliated noble who, after graduating from the Unbending Reed Monastery and becoming part of the Yamauchi Guard, was promoted to one of Naritsuhikoâs trusted vassals.
On top of that, ever since Eijuâs rule, the frequency in which Southern Princesses married into the Imperial Family almost shifted into a constant. With that in consideration, it would be foolish to deny that the man was responsible for building the foundations for the Southâs ironclad control on Yamauchiâs throne through marriage.
As Sumioâs explanation finished, Yukiya was left with an indescribable face. âHearing that, it sounds like Land Sovereign Eiju intentionally chased away the True Golden Raven to gain free rein over the Imperial Court.â
âIt sounds like it, but that canât beâI think.â There was no way for anyone to tell what the truth of the matter was. It all happened too long ago. âAnyway, I came today to see if there were any records remaining of his time at the Monastery.â
âAnd from the looks of it, you didnât find much, I take it?â
âIt has been over a hundred years after all. The only records remaining were of his graduation.â Which was why all they had managed to learn was that he graduated as the first of his class. âAs far as history goes, Land Sovereign Eiju is the last Yellow Raven we have had. He made plenty of reforms and laws, which means there are a multitude of records about his government, yet there is suspiciously little of anything predating His Majesty Naritsuhikoâs disappearance.â
âNow that you mention it, didnât he helm a large-scale project to compile and edit history books? Do you think he could have used the chance to intentionally eliminate and falsify documents?â
âIf I were to make a guess, yes.â
As a vassal, to leave the Golden Raven behind at the Holy Precincts and return alone was already a blunder so severe not even multiple lifetimes would be enough to repent. If one were to assume there was something dark lurking behind the events, Land Sovereign Eiju could have well been the type to have no qualms about performing such cover-ups.
âIn any case, as long as the True Golden Ravenâs memories donât return and thereâs no written records, we simply donât have any way to know what went on in the past.â
Yukiya exchanged glances with Sumio and, with a frown on his face, stood there deep in thought. â...... Just what the hell happened in the Holy Precincts a hundred years ago?â
âăăăăăâăăăăă â
After seeing Sumio off, Yukiya headed back to the room they used for the Study Group. The floor was littered with the bodies of despondent boys.
âIâm back!â Yukiya announced, struggling to find a way to step around them.
âWelcome backââ a number of spiritless voices responded, all coming from the heaps of corpses lying around that he called friends.
âWhatâs wrong, everyone?â
âJust a break. A break!â
âLord Professor went to pick up something he forgot in his room. Weâre resting in the meantime.â
âI canât do this anymoreâŚâŚ My head is about to explodeâŚâŚâ
âGood job, everyone, good job.â
Time had flown byânearly four months had already passed since the Seeds first came to the Monastery. Those unable to keep up with their studies and training were starting to pop up here and there, but all the members of their group had somehow managed to hold on.
Once Yukiya finally managed to pass through the salumps of wailing trainees slumped on the ground, he moved closer to the wall. âI tried to further narrow down the test question predictions I made the other day. Once Akeru is back, have him explain them to you.â
âOoh, thank you.â
âThanks, but I wish I didnât need toââ
âPlease, Lord Professor, take your time coming back,â someone else pathetically pleaded. At the same time, the sliding door, which they had closed to block off the sun, unexpectedly opened.
âGuess thatâs my bad for returning quickly!â A thundering merciless roarâwildly reminiscent of Kashinâs yellsâcame out from the backlit figure. âCome on, stand up right now! Stop dillydallying, you pathetic little shits. You have no time to rest right now!â
The boys at their feet wailed as Yukiya passed to Akeru the paper where he had written the test predictions. âGood job, teacher. I heard you forgot something?â
âI didnât forget anything. I just didnât think we needed to go over something so basic so I left the textbook behind. I didnât find it necessary to bring it, foolish of me, which is how I ended up having to go all the way back for it.â
âMy bad for not knowing that much!â âSorry for being stupid!â The corpses on the ground wallowed and writhed. Then, at that instant, the sound of the alarm bell reached themâthe entire room instantly froze.
âââAn ambush,â someone whispered. All the boys who were lying down stood up in a matter of seconds.
âDonât fuck with us! Weâre studying here!â
âWe were taking a break, though.â
âShige! Your Ornamented Blade, youâre forgetting it!â
They all picked up their Ornamented Blades among an incessant fuss and left the room as they kicked the desks and books in their way. They wove their feather robes anew while running as fast as they could. Once they finally reached the plaza in front of the Great Hall, they found the other trainees also rushing there from all directions of the Monastery.
âToo slow! Now line up by year, weâll be doing a roll call!â
At Kashinâs orders, their bodies moved automatically, almost by reflex. Those who arrived first got in front of him and raised their hands as everyone else flocked behind them to form lines. Then, the very last person in each line ran to the front while counting everyone in it.
âEight Evergreens present. Everyone is accounted for, excluding those absent on field practice.â
âTwenty one Saplings present. Everyone is accounted for.â
âThirty nine Seeds presentâone person missing.â
The moment their fellow trainee made the announcement, one could almost hear the Seeds let out a collective silent cry. It was everyoneâs responsibility if someone was missing during an ambush. While the identity of the idiot remained yet unclear, there was no question he had just incurred all the Seedsâ hatred.
Kashinâs face too went red with rage. His next yell was so loud the very walls of the Great Hall shook because of it. âNow, who is it!?â
â1-1âs Chihaya.â
Something was amiss, Yukiya noticed as soon as he heard the name.
While Chihaya was catastrophically unsociable, he had incredible physical talent worth the title of genius and a serious and earnest attitude. His lack of social skills aside, he was a man above reproach and it was hard to believe he would accidentally be late for training. Kashin must have thought the same thingâjust for a second, Yukiya could see his eyelids twitching. However, that proved insufficient to change his overall behavior.
âEvergreens and Saplings, youâre dismissed. Seeds, go search for 1-1âs Chihaya and bring him here right now. Donât expect me to let any of you go until every single Seed is present here. Now go!â
Following Kashinâs orders, the Seeds scattered in all directions in order to cover the entirety of the Monasteryâs grounds as they sought Chihaya everywhere. However, and despite their best efforts, the tower bellâwhich was supposed to ring once they finally found himâdidnât give off even the slightest sound no matter how much or how long they searched.
It was only when the Seeds had returned back to the plaza, having heard the dinner bell ring, that Chihaya finally appeared all by himself. The instant he caught sight of his fellow trainees, all beyond exhausted after ceaselessly running around the Monasteryâs expansive grounds, he reacted immediately. He seemed to have realized what had happened.
The sun had sunk completely at the time, and their surroundings were getting darker by the minute. All the while, light leaked out from the dinner hall, filling the ravenous Seeds with a hopeless yearning.
âWhere were you?â Kashin asked in an uncharacteristically quietâyet all the more terrifyingâvoice. Chihaya, however, didnât bother to answer. âYour fellow Seeds have been searching for you, screaming themselves hoarse for the last four hours, and theyâll have to join marching drills without even having dinner, all because of you. And yet you have no explanation to give them?â
The Seeds glared viciously at him, as if silently screaming for him to say something, yet Chihaya stubbornly kept his silence. Kashin sighed with annoyance and raised his head, returning to his usual yelling.
âEveryone, march to the swimming pond! Donât even dare to stop until I say so!â
âIâll take the lead.â
Everyone noisily turned around and started to run, none of them bothering to waste their breath by complaining. However, a storm raged inside them, heaping endless insults towards Chihaya. Their expressions, all similarly pitiful.
âăăăăăâăăăăă â
âItâs all over. In more ways than oneâŚâŚâ
âItâs all because Chihaya caused that freaking ruckus right before the exams.â
âIf we end up dropping out, itâs all on him!â
Akeru watched his students with no words to offer them. The ten-day exam period had come to its end but, rather than relief at their freedom, the Study Group regulars were instead overcome with collective resignation about their grades.
âThe worst part? Chihaya probably still managed to get good grades. Itâs so fucking unfair!â Kippei spat out to Hisayaâs wholehearted agreement.
âI heard that heâs been punished with cleaning the Great Hall all by himself, but thatâs not such a bad deal, is it? Compared to the harm heâs done to us.â
âOh, on the contrary, thereâs no bigger punishment,â interrupted a voice they werenât used to. Before Akeru could even wonder who had suddenly talked, the study roomâs sliding door opened with a loud noise. âHey, Beans. Whatâs up with those miserable faces?â
âSapling Ichiryuu!â
âNow what are you doing? Coming here out of nowhere. Plus, âno bigger punishmentâ?â
Shigemaru and Yukiya looked at the Sapling who had just arrived, putting on airs, with their eyes wide open. The intruderâIchiryuu, apparentlyâlaughed ominously. âHe has until tomorrow morning to clean it, right? But, as a celebration for finishing the exams, the Evergreens are going to take everyone out to play tonight.â
âPlay? What do you mean?â
âAt this hour?â
Akeru checked outside the windowâthe sky was already turning the colors of dusk. Ichiryuu, on the other hand, seemed to be barely holding back his laughter at his juniorsâ obvious and complete confusion.
âAh, bratsâŚâŚ Weâre going to a festival.â
âA festival, huh.â Now that was enough information for Akeru to infer the whole point of this little scene. He wasnât the only one, either. While Shigemaru and the rest of the commoners were still looking blankly at Ichiryuu, Yukiya seemed to have realized the truth tooâhe had an odd expression on his face, as if barely forcing a smile.
âAnd itâs the very last day of a five day long summer festival. Truly worth lamenting Chihayaâs luck for missing out, trust me!â
âSo,â an Evergreen came leading a whole group of people and yelled as he flared his nostrils, âitâs time for the Red Light Districtâs Red Lantern5 Festival!âÂ
The Saplings and Evergreens all cheered in unison.
At first, Akeru, who had already experienced plenty of banquets at the Red Light District, couldnât help but to feel second hand embarrassment at his fellow Seedsâ frolicking. The Red Light District proved to be certainly enchanting during festivals, however, and even Akeru, who was otherwise used to it, was soon taken by the beautiful sights.
There, luxuriously decorated buildings lined up on the mountainâs otherwise chaotically distributed slope and red, round garden lanterns hung in rows at both sides of every street and stair. There was a red lantern motif to all the shopsâ ornamentation as well. To top it all off, light silks fluttered in the air here and there, all dyed in shades of beautiful vermilions and light greens.
Yet, no matter how much the first timer Seeds were willing to jump in instantly, the others didnât give them such an easy time.
âNow, get rid of that stupid scarf!â
âI get you want to show off but wearing your feather robes is actually the key here.â
âBeing recognized as a Monastery trainee gives you quite the popularity boost. They may even give you an extra or two arguing that âyou can always pay it back later when you have the moneyâ.â
âThat said, they donât like them smelling of sweat. Donât you dare ruin your predecessorsâ efforts to create this image of an upright, clean, gentlemanly trainee with a promising future.â
After passing their seniorsâ strict checkup, they finally allowed the group to step into the Red Light District. Exhilarating melodies, evoking the dark of the night and romance, came from all directions; colorfully dressed, beautiful women gently danced to that same music on top of the stages built in each of the impressive buildings.Â
Some of the dancers seemed to have noticed them looking in awe as they would playfully wave their sleeves in their direction from time to time.
âI could die happy right nowâŚâŚâ
âNo dying, Shige.â
âDonât stop, you idiots. Youâre blocking the way!â
Shigemaru found himself in a dream-like state and was all too prone to stop moving in front of every stage. Every single time, Akeru and Yukiya had to somehow push the massive body in front of them and drag him away in order to advance.
âYou know? Itâs actually a shame Chihaya couldnât come,â Hisaya said with a grin from ear to ear. He was greeting one of the dancers back.
âWhat? No, he got what he deserved,â Kippei argued back, his own excitement plain in his voice.
âBut, now that I think about it, doesnât it bother you? Where did that serious-to-a-fault Chihaya have to go that he was willing to break the rules?â Tatsuto asked, much to Akeruâs inward agreement. The fact of the matter was that they couldnât find him no matter how much they searched the Monasteryâs grounds. It was obvious he had sneaked out through some sort of unknown way.Â
Soon, however, others caught wind of their conversation and the topic fully shifted into frivolous theorizing.
âMaybe he had a family member in critical condition?â
âBut, if that were the case, he could have just asked for permission, right?â
âThen what if it was to meet a woman?â
âThat Chihaya? No way!â
âHow can you say that? Those kinds of guys tend to have the dirtiest minds.â
âHey, does a pure man even exist in this world?â
As if they had just remembered the place they found themselves in, those chatting burst with excitement.
âNo way!â
âWhat a shame for you, Chihaya. Weâll have fun in your name as well!â
âNo hard feelings!â
As it was the last day of the festival, the Red Light District was particularly packed with people. The group kept walking, going up the stairs to finally reach the plaza at the very center of the District, where a special stage had been built especially for the occasion. Dancers chosen from every brothel performed their long prepared act for the event as the singers and musicians lined up right behind them.
A huge shop stood right there, as if looking down on the plazaâGazing Moon Hall, the seniorsâ actual destination.
âOh, itâs the young masters of the Monastery, welcome!â
âWeâve been waiting for you.â
The trainees closing off the exam period with a visit to the Red Light District was, apparently, a yearly tradition, and Gazing Moon Hall was the traineesâ current shop of choice. Which was why the shopâs staff had been waiting for them.
By some fortune, Akeru had been keeping his distance from his ogling friendsâit was only thanks to that that he noticed Yukiya. He was also standing one step away from everyone else, just like Akeru, but looking in a strange direction. His eyes were fixed on the spectators surrounding the stage.
âWhatâs wrong?â
â...... Ah, nothing. Let's go.â
Before he even realized it himself, Akeruâs eyes searched the direction Yukiya had been looking in, soon understanding what had caught his attention. Despite the lanterns illuminating the stage blinding him, one single figure dressed in all black stood out among the colorfully dressed spectators.
âWhatâs that guy doing hereâŚâŚ!?âÂ
There was no mistaking it. There was Chihaya, the very person who was supposed to be cleaning the Great Hall at the moment, talking with someone, possibly a woman, with uncharacteristic intensity.
âWait, Akeru!â
Yukiya tried to stop him, but Akeru ignored him. He bolted through the masses, pushing spectators aside as he closed in on the backstage with an angry shout.
âChihaya! You damn shit, what the hell are you thinking!?â
However, just as Chihaya turned towards Akeru with a start, a hand came from behind and strongly blocked off Akeruâs mouth. âHey, Chihaya. What a coincidence! I never expected to meet up in a place like this.â
Someone else brazenly greeted him insteadâYukiya. What the fuck was he doing? Akeru tried to get rid of his hand over his mouth, but it was to no avail. Yukiyaâs grip remained firmly in place as he glared, for some reason, at Akeru instead of Chihaya, who looked clearly shocked. His gaze wandered as he stood there in silence.
âWho is there?â a beautiful bell-like voice asked. It carried surprisingly well, even among peopleâs chatter and the reverberating music.
Then, a figure peeked out from behind Chihaya. A woman, noâa girl, rather.
She was tiny. Her thin neck, arms and legs looked like they were about to bend and break at any moment. She wasnât what one would call pretty, but she had a gentle look to her and a kind smile on her lips. Her round eyelids, shadowed by dark eyelashes, were softly closed, giving off the image of daffodil buds about to bloom.
Could this girl be some prostitute he frequented? Did that mean he had broken the Monasteryâs rules, turning a blind eye to his position as a trainee, just to visit the Red Light District? And, on top of it all, he had the gall to ignore his completely deserved punishment to come here again? What a disappointment he had turned out to be!
Akeru had a mountain of things to say, but Yukiyaâs grip on his mouth remained just as unforgiving and there was no way Akeru could be understood through it. Chihaya didnât get a chance to answer either, not before someone elseâs carefree voice interrupted the scene.
âEhâ? Thatâs Chihaya!â
âWait a moment, what are you doing here!?â
Shigemaru and Ichiryuu had been the ones to speak. They had probably come back to check on them.Â
âAre they your friends?â the girl asked with a tilt of her head, pulling Chihayaâs sleeve.
The answer, however, didnât come from Chihaya, but Yukiya. âOh, yes! We are Chihayaâs peers and senior at the Monastery.â
Yukiyaâs oddly kind behavior struck Akeru as suspicious at first. That is, until Yukiya turned to him and poked his own eyelid with his free hand. Suddenly, Akeru realizedâthe girl sticking to Chihaya hadnât opened her eyes even once since their arrival.
She was blind.
Only the very best got to become prostitutes at the Centerâs Red Light District. They were chosen for their looks during their youth, given a proper education and trained in the arts. They were, in a sense, just as talented and refined as the noble princesses of the Imperial Court. As far as Akeru knew, for the place to take on a blind girl was unheard of.
As the thought crossed his mind, Akeru also noticed the kimono she wore. It was comparatively nicer than what guests used, but all too plain and unadorned for a prostitute.
ââIn other words, she couldnât be just some prostitute Chihaya liked.
Finally, Yukiya let him off. He had, it seemed, caught on to Akeruâs change of attitude. âSorry for the commotion. He insisted that he wasnât going to someplace like the Red Light District back at the Monastery so, well, it had been quite the surprise to find him here.â
Neither Shigemaru nor Ichiryuu chimed in beyond that, probably realizing as well that there was more to the situation than met the eye.Â
âOh, I see!â the girl exclaimed in surprise before awkwardly bowing to them in greeting. âNice to meet you, Iâm Yui. Thank you for always taking care of my older brother.â
âWait, wait, so you had a sister!?â Shigemaru looked back and forth between Chihaya and Yui, eyes wide open.
â...... Hey, by any chance, were you also visiting your sister last time?âÂ
Chihaya didnât bother to answer Ichiryuu's question, but Yui did. âHe was. I usually live at the Ravine, so we donât get to meet much⌠As I sing and play the biwa, they asked me for help with the stage during the festival. We were close by for a change, so I was selfish and asked him if we could meet. Donât tell me⌠did that cause problems for you all?â
The girl gave them an uneasy look and, as if they had prearranged it all ahead of time, the boys answered in turn.Â
âOh, not all.â
âNothing like that, donât worry.â
âRight, Akeru?â Ichiryuuâs warning wasâas Akeru immediately realizedâvirtually a threat abusing his status as the senior.
Making use of all his self-control, Akeru replied as well, âItâs as they say.â
They all briefly introduced themselves afterwards. While Chihaya kept to his sullen silence, Akeru could actually tell it wasnât born out of irritation. His fellow Seed was merely bracing himself and waiting for their reactions.Â
As Akeru pondered, wondering how Chihaya planned to get through the situation, Ichiryuu instead nonchalantly pointed towards Gazing Moon Hall.
âGuys, donât forget we should be back. Iâm sorry, Yui. Others are waiting for us, so weâll have to take our leave now.â
âItâs fine. Sorry for keeping you all here for so long.â Yui bowed her head.
As she did so, Ichiryuu wrapped his arm around Chihayaâs neck, forcefully pulling their faces closer together. All to ensure that Yui wouldnât get to hear his next words.
âWe didnât see anything. Good?â Ichiryuu whispered before instantly raising his voice again so Yui could hear him too. âWell then, letâs go. See you, Yui!â
Yukiya and Shigemaru also gave their farewells to Yui in a similarly amicable manner, all while they picked Akeru by the arms and didnât let go.
As they all dragged Akeru in the direction of Gazing Moon Hall, Ichiryuu cleared his throat. âNow, what did you all see?â
âA lady on the stage.â
âShe was quite the beauty.â
âExactly. It was a dancer so beautiful that even Shigemaru and I, who came to seek you out, were taken by her.â Their wooden charade finished, the three of them simultaneously turned towards Akeru.
âGot it, Akeru? Thatâs all that happened out there.â
âăăăăăâăăăăă â
After Yukiya and the others took off, Chihaya finally let out a deep sigh. â...... Iâm sorry, theyâre an unruly bunch and you must already be tired as-is today."
âIâm fine! Actually, Iâm glad I could talk with them. I didnât know you had such fun friends!â
âThey arenât my friends.â
âYouâre saying that again? You really should stop being so stubborn,â Yui chuckled as Chihaya felt his chest tightening all too horribly.
He opened his mouth to retort back, but he wasnât given the chance to do so. Someone with a similar outfit to Yuiâanother musician, most likelyâcame over at that moment, calling for her. âItâs your turn.â
Despite his reluctance to part ways, Chihaya helped to guide Yui towards the backstage. âIâll have vacations from tomorrow onwards.â
âI know. Youâll be working as a live-in servant, right? Donât forget to take care of yourself,â Yui responded with a smileâbut she looked lonely.
âIâll come visit as much as I can.â
âWhen?â
âWell, as soon as I can take time off.â
âIâll be waiting then.â
âTake care of yourself.â
âYou too, brother. Please, donât do anything rash out there.â
Chihaya took Yuiâs biwa, which had been left closeby, and passed it to her before sending her up the stage. The musicians waiting on top gave him a grateful nod.
Before Yui had even finished walking up the stage, Chihaya turned on his heels. Of all things, he hadnât expected Ichiryuu and the others to find out. Still, while there was no way for him to ascertain their honesty, at the very least, they had promised to overlook it all. However, he had to return before any other trainees saw him there.
In order to avoid peopleâs eyes, Chihaya took the back alleys.
Soon, he left the main streets and the festivalâs bustle was quickly replaced by silence. From the sight of it, the shops must have been using these backstreets to put away their usual front items for the duration of the festival. There were all kinds of things, from signboards to bamboo poles used to hang lanterns, littered over the streetâeven broken lanterns and plates had been left there.
As difficult as it would be to walk through the mess, he could still watch his steps thanks to the light coming out from the buildings. It was accompanied by the smell of oil and ingredientsâthe kitchens were, most likely, facing that direction. It was doable enough, Chihaya determined as he took a few steps.
He didnât get too far, however, before the feeling of something lurking behind overcame him. He stopped.
ââSomeone was watching him.
He turned around as fast as possible, in time to catch sight of a shadow panickedly withdrawing behind a building.
âWhat do you want?â Chihaya asked and he heard the sound of someone gasping. Soon after, someone came out of the shadows with plain resignationâAkeru, who had supposedly left with Ichiryuu and the others a moment ago. âTailing me?â
âIâm not that cheap. I just wanted to talk to you one-to-one, without anybody else around,â Akeru awkwardly replied.
âTalk?â
âYes, exactly. I was initiated on physiognomy as part of my education to join the Imperial Court,â Akeru said as Chihaya looked at him with suspicion, wondering what he was trying to say. The expression on Akeruâs face turned sour. âThat girl and you. You arenât related, right?â
â...... What are you trying to say?â
âI can tell that much, looking at you two. You know, no matter how different people may look, if youâre related by blood, thereâs always something in common. But that girl and you donât have anything at allâŚâŚ Everything about you two is different, from head to toe. Am I wrong?â
Akeru already knew Chihaya had a sister from the time his followers researched his background and checked his census registration, but Yui and Chihaya were clearly unrelated as far as Akeru could see. It made him question the legitimacy of that same censusâor so Akeru explained to Chihaya.
âââYouâre lying to us, arenât you?â Chihaya did not answer. He couldnât tell what Akeru was thinking.
Akeruâs shapely eyebrows crumpled into a frown. âTo assume a false identity and come to the Monasteryâwhat the hell are you planning by doing that?â
âThatâs got nothing to do with you.â
âNow that Iâve learned about it, it does! Tell me why! Iâll have no option but to inform the Monastery instructors otherwise! So if thereâs a reason, please, tell me!â Akeruâs beautiful face twisted into a grimace. âI donât want to become your enemy, not if I can help it.â
âAfter all the sneaking and snooping around? Huh, Court Raven? Are you saying that now!?â
âWhy are you still going on with shit like that!? If you arenât going to give me any answers, then Iâll have to ask her instead,â Akeru yelled, all riled up, and turned his back to Chihaya.
That second, Chihaya undid the knot on his Ornamented Blade and took hold of the weapon, scabbard and all. There was no hesitationâChihaya swung downwards the very next moment, aiming for the back of the head right in front of him.
The scabbard dug itself into the wall of the nearest building with a loud thump.
Right before the Ornamented Blade itself had made contact with Akeruâs head however, the boy had barely managed to twist his body out of the way. He stared at Chihaya with clear disbelief. âWhat did youâŚâ
Akeru was probably too dumbfounded to even think about pulling his own blade, given the state he was in. A Court Raven like him probably couldnât even conceive the idea of a Hill Raven actually pointing his weapon at him. They truly were just the same.
Anger boiled within Chihaya. Yet, at the same time, he was terrifyingly calmâhe even had the composure to pity Akeru for his inability to at the very least counterattack in such a situation. Nevertheless, Chihaya moved to face the petrified Akeru and readied his Ornamented Blade once again for attack.
âWait!â someoneâs piercing yell stopped him. âCalm down, Chihaya.â
The voiceâs owner leaped out from behind Akeruâit was Yukiya. He opened his arms, standing in front of Chihaya as if to protect Akeru.
âGet out of the way.â
âNo way.â
âThereâll be no mercy for anyone who harms Yui.â
âAnd thatâs not Akeruâs intention, much like how you donât intend to kill him either, right? Now, calm down,â Yukiya said as he made an attempt to push down Chihayaâs weapon.
Chihaya shook him off by sheer reflex, breaking Yukiya's balance. The boy let out a cry as he stumbled and, much like most Yatagarasu would do in such a situation, he reached out towards Chihayaâs sleeve and grasped it with his hand.
ââThe next moment, Chihaya felt a tingle as the muscles of his entire arm contracted.
He didnât even have enough time to notice the pain. Yukiya was already twisting his wrist before he could do anything, wrestling the Ornamented Blade off his hand. At that rate, he was going to be pulled by the shoulder as well. Chihaya didnât even think about his next stepâhe kicked the ground. His body floated in the air for a second, gaining the rotational momentum necessary to break off Yukiyaâs hold on him.
ââThis fucker.
The moment he landed, Chihaya made an attempt to strike Yukiya in the face with the back of his hand as he rotated, but Yukiya kneeled to dodge it. While he was avoiding Chihayaâs attack, however, Yukiya shrewdly tried to kick his legs and trip him, but it never happenedâChihaya leaped away. He backed down two to three steps to recover his balance and posture as Yukiya too tumbled backwards and instantly straightened up.
They wordlessly studied each other for a while, waiting for each otherâs next move.
By that point, all excess energy had left Yukiyaâs body. His stance wasnât anything like what Chihaya had seen him use before at the dojo, but it undoubtedly belonged to someone with plenty of experience.
After that short pause, Chihaya went on the offensive.
He went for one straight punch, which Yukiya evaded with the palm of his hand, grazing Chihayaâs fist. Realizing that Yukiya planned to take hold of his arm once again, Chihaya used the momentum of the swing to go for a roundhouse kick to the head. Before it hit, however, Yukiya bent his upper body ever so slightly to dodge.
Chihayaâs balance was therefore broken, but Yukiya didnât take the opening in front of him. Oddly enough, he immediately backed off.
Chihaya was now certainâYukiya was, in fact, intentionally letting him attack first and aiming for the joints. He would fluidly dodge his attacks and, at the very next moment, go after the skinniest parts of the body in order to use a joint-locking technique. It was quite the distasteful method, but no less of a problem.
ââFor Chihaya, who heavily relied on strength for his martial arts, someone like Yukiya was the worst kind of adversary.
To top it all off, Yukiyaâs eyesight seemed to be abnormally good. He didnât even need to turn his head to read Chihayaâs punch, eye movements sufficed. Deep in thought, Chihaya tried yet another attack but, as he had expected, Yukiya blocked off all his attempts. Chihayaâs hits never reached their target in any shape or form.
They grappled again and again with each other and, whether he liked it or not, Chihaya started to calm down.
Now that he thought about it, there had been something off with Yukiya from their first encounter at the dojo. Yukiya had never gone on the offensive himself so he had lost every single time, but, if one were to look at it in another way, Chihaya hadnât taken even one single clean point out of him either.
While someone weaker would have never noticed that, Chihaya did. He was more than used to immediately defeating most of his opponents. It was incredibly rare for him to struggle so much with getting points. Chihaya felt a shiver down his back. It had taken him way too long to realize, but Yukiya may well be the only one among the trainees that he couldnât guarantee a clean hit against.
As he thought so, Yukiya almost grappled him again at the joints, and Chihaya clicked his tongue as he jumped back. They glared at each otherâit was a deadlock.
At that moment, a fed-up voice echoed out of nowhere. â...... Are you happy now?â
Yukiya, who hadnât spoken a word ever since he first stole Chihayaâs Ornamented Blade, forced himself to smile as he gasped for air. âWhy would I be? I only wanted to talk from the beginning.âÂ
âDonât you lie to me! Youâve been enjoying this.â
âThereâs not much leeway for enjoyment when youâre facing the Seedsâ best martial artist,â Yukiya answered and, with a deep exhale, he smoothly returned to his battle stance.
Even Chihaya was starting to find their whole situation thoroughly ludicrous. His gaze, which had been fixed on Yukiya during their fight, drifted to the side. There, sitting on some lumber lying between two shops, he found the speakerâan exasperated-looking Ichiryuu with his cheek resting on one of his hands.
âYukiya! If you can move like that, how about doing it during class, huh?â an indignant Shigemaru, who was sitting beside Ichiryuu, complained right after.
âDonât bother,â Ichiryuu added with resignation in his voice. âThat right now is his specialty. Heâll feign weakness at first, letting his adversary do nothing but attack, thoroughly tiring the poor soul down, and then and only then he beats the shit out of him.â
The light in Ichiryuuâs eyes had vanished entirely.
âIchiryuu, donât tell meâŚâ Shigemaru gasped.
âYeah. I was once fooled by his looks back at home and picked a fight with himâŚâŚ He beat me up so badly it changed my outlook on life.â
âSo thatâs why you acted like that at firstâŚâŚâ Shigemaruâs words were full of sympathy. Yukiyaâs Ornamented Blade rested ever so carefully in his hands.
ââYukiya meant him no harm, Chihaya had known that much from the start.
Behind Yukiya, however, was Akeruâstill pale as a sheet, the boy had used the chance to run quite far away from him. While Chihaya had indeed calmed down, he hadnât forgiven Akeru for what he had said to him. Chihaya ruthlessly glared at him, making Akeru jump on the spot as he trembled.
âIt was his mistake to word it like a threat, but Akeru isnât that bad of a guy. Here,â Yukiya took Chihayaâs Ornamented Blade, which he had tossed away as soon as he stole it, and offered it back to him. âIt has to be his sisterâs influence. Despite how it may have looked like, heâs actually quite kind to women.â
âYou just had to ask him to not do it, really. Iâm sure Akeru wouldnât force Yui to answer any of his questions.â
âAh, I understand you lost your temper, but donât you dare to go hitting others with the Ornamented Blade! It may be shaped like a sword, but itâs not a tool to hurt others.â
Now, just how long had they all been listening in on the conversation? Yet curiously enough, none of them asked him for details. Chihaya, however, just didnât find it in him to be bothered by the secret keeping anymore.
â...... Yui doesnât know,â he murmured.
âHuh?â A bunch of stumped faces turned towards him.
âShe doesnât know. That we arenât related by blood.â

1: In this specific scene, Yui and Kou are written in katakana (ăŚă¤ and ăłăŚ) instead of kanji. This can be done for a variety of reasons, including a representation of a characterâs illiteracy. Overall, as a narrative tool, omitting kanji is used to express ignorance. To show a character doesnât understand a concept and itâs all sounds to them, be it because itâs their first time hearing it or some other reason.
2: Land Sovereign is originally ĺé¸ĺ
Ź (Hakurikukou), a title crafted by using the kanji for esteem (ĺ), land (é¸) and duke/lord (ĺ
Ź). Essentially, the Esteemed Lord of the Land.
3: For much of Ancient Japanâs history, calling someone by their name tended to be considered terribly impolite. While the women favored the use of Karina (ĺĺ) or aliases, between men the preferred method to avoid such disrespect was the use of honorific titles or sonshou (ĺ°ç§°). Much like in the specific case of Land Sovereign, these were directly associated with the manâs political position or rank most of the time.
4: The Red Lanterns here refer to a specific type of lantern, hoozuki lanterns (ăťăăăćçŻ). They're named after their resemblance to ground cherries, also known as Chinese red lanterns.

MiqoMarch Day 23 - Midnight
With their intended voyage into the void only a few days out, Arsay thought it the upmost importance that she steal her partner away to Kugane, that they might share one more fond memory together should things not turn out the way they plan in the thirteenth. It was as they crossed the very same bridge the miqo'te had once sat on together two years prior when Arsay gifted Y'shtola with a bracelet matching that of her own. A token of endearment which, Arsay confessed, she would have given to her fellow scion back then, had nerves not gotten the best of her. While their relationship has undoubtedly changed since the initial purchase of the jewellery, the sentiment remained the same. Y'shtola was someone who Arsay loved dearly and she will forever be grateful to have the seeker's life intertwined with her own. No matter where their free spirits took them, they would always hold each other in their hearts. A promise Y'shtola was more than willing to keep. She slipped the the string of beads around her wrist without a second thought. They were never to come off, not even when the two decided to delay their return to Radz-at-Han in favour of a private bath at the dead of night.

ok, so my own final (and very, very fresh) thoughts, bc i wanted to wait until i'd watched everything to make a sweeping opinion of the whole series, and it's quite opinionated. and long. probably too long. i write essays for fun (everyone point and laugh):
my personal (and very, very fresh) ranking of the hbo war shows (not including gen kill bc that's a different war, sorry) goes- band of brothers > masters of the air > the pacific (it's the same for my title score rankings. that hasn't changed yet)
my main points of contention with MotA are 1) the nine episodes, 2) the length of the episodes, and 3) certain editing choices. nine episodes, compared to the classic ten, isn't Nearly enough time to showcase all that they wanna showcase (especially when the episodes are as short as they are, once you get past the recap and "next on" parts). and they wanna showcase A Lot! there so much going on! i'd ask them to pace themselves, but they literally Can't!
i mean, the editing choices are a Whole Thing! practically gives me whiplash sometimes lol. i feel like the weaker episodes still have parts that are Really good, but like. Individually. they don't work together as a stronger whole, which is to the episode's detriment. rather than jumping around (as the show often did), they could've benefited a lot from focusing on the One Story instead of squeezing three more stories into there (i say that, but i think the 4-5-6 episode run (all with multiple stories per episode) did this very well while Still being very good episodes, so it's not like it Can't be done, it just didn't work for 7, 8 and (partly) 9). granted, i suspect a chunk of the weird editing can be blamed on, well, there being only nine (and not all that long) episodes and no one wanting to cough up enough money for a tenth. ugh! i'm blaming both hbo And appletv for this (and covid19 ig). it's just One More Episode, how much could it cost?? and on the subject of episodes, why no episode titles? you used to love episode titles! i could've brainstormed episode titles for them For Free!!
when it comes to the characters, the rankings remain the same: BoB > MotA > TP. it's not totally fair tho, since BoB followed the exact same (and large-ish) group of guys from beginning to end, so you're Gonna know who they all are and get attached. this wasn't the case (for me!) when watching TP, since, unlike BoB, they jump around from group to group. i never felt like i got to know them all that well, outside of the main characters. i think MotA almost hits that sweet spot, especially knowing they had those two main things going against it: large cast And jumping from group to group. there's a case to be made for bias here (i Was the blog blogging about everything MotA for like. years.), but i still think they found a good enough balance of fleshing out the main characters while Also helping the audience get to know about a bunch of minor characters, of which there are a shitton (and their personalities, motivations, backgrounds, quirks).
there's also the representation of women. actual angel renĂŠe lemaire is and will always be a cut above the rest (bastogne is just That Good, argue with the wall). she's written so well that it almost makes me forget about how a bunch of women are portrayed in carentan. i have...issues with how women are portrayed in TP (even tho i love lena), so there's that. MotA falls in the middle (again) bc there's Way more women on-screen, but the writing can be questionable. balanced (as all things should be?) captain l'sandra wing-westgate is a character of all time, but episode 7 birthed the craziest discourse known to man (the hbo war fandom), but it wasn't all that unwarranted. manon and michou were sooo cool, but we didn't see nearly enough of them (another victim of the 'editing too many stories into one episode' problem. why not a whole resistance episode? or at least as the only b-plot?). paulina was interesting, but fulfilled one of those 'attractive foreign woman gives sage advice during/after sex' tropes (there's probably a tvtropes page for that idk). so many red cross girls, but none of the in-depth payoff :/ epic highs (multiple women!!) + epic lows (writing women??) = pretty tolerable. not great, not terrible. it was aight. i trust the fandom to build on this tho.
narrative is the big one tho. it's the whole "doing so much with so little" thing they've got going on (i'm ignoring their big budget here lol, could've been bigger). rather than having one main story with many connecting side stories (like BoB), it does the TP thing where there's many semi-connecting side stories set in the same general area. it helps that there's crosby's narration (i enjoy narration, sue me!), and he helps everything connect, sorta. but there's still other side stories that have Nothing to do with him (sandra's side gigs (revealing what she did takes away the mystery of what she Might be doing), the tuskegee airmen, quinn and bailey's eurotrip). would it have helped if there were two narrators (say, someone like rosie)? idk. gonna sit with that one. if there's a through-line, it's not super obvious like in the other two shows. which is insanely funny to me bc i literally like TP less, but that show's got an Extremely tight through-line all the way down. i can't lie and say it doesn't!
back to budget- i've seen people criticize this show for being called "masters of the air" when there's not much of "the air". ig that's fair, but there's the money issue, again. also, it'd get very repetitive if they were always in "the air". there was enough confusion about identifying who was who with the masks on, so imagine if that was Every Episode. out of All the issues the show has, this is the least issue-y. again, that's just my opinion, and it could change.
another budget thing (i think??)- idk enough about costuming and hair for period pieces so i can't comment on that with my 0 background in it, all i Can say is that i knoooooow people were clowning on marjorie cleven's hair in episode 1 (and i could see why, no such thing as 1940s beach waves). but from what i could understand- that actress' addition was a last-minute thing (bc i had No idea who the hell she was and i already found someone cast for marjorie all the way back in 2021). maybe there's something to say about the quality of rush jobs, but i really do think it was the most last-minute thing bc it came out of Nowhere, and timeline-wise, it looks like that bit was done long after everything else had been filmed. outside looking in, it seems something probably went wrong/didn't work out with who or what they already had and there wasn't enough wiggle room (time and money) to fix it. this isn't me being an apologist (lol), but i feel like a theorist at a big board bc nothing adds up! and i wanna know what happened! i'm just speculating! speculating on this blog is All i did for like Years lmaooo.
this is more of a side thing, but some of the lines in MotA feel really on-the-nose, almost corny. and that was Gonna be a knock against it, but there's some equally Extremely on-the-nose lines in both BoB and TP (Especially in BoB), so if i give MotA shit for it, i'd have to give all three shows shit for it lol. none of them are free of cheese.
another silly aside- no peaches, no main gingers, no main eugenes! we can't have 'em all, but c'mon!
there Is some good tho lol. one thing that MotA really has going for it, that i think the other shows have less of, is- and GOD it feels so weird to call this "world-building" when it's actual goddamn history, but- it's got world-building. maybe that isn't the best word for it. but i like how much Bigger ww2 feels in this show. BoB is one stop, then the next stop, then the next stop, which is, admittedly, good from a narrative-perspective (easy to follow), but not as good when you want a scale of how devastating the war is (in fairness, it was filmed in 2000). even TP feels pretty "enclosed" in a way. there's island-hopping, yeah, but all the damn islands look the same (not including australia lol). it's a theatre of the war we otherwise don't really get to see, but there still isn't all that much to see. it's water and sand and rock and dirt. which is the point, but Whatever! would've been cool if we saw sledge and co. in china, but moving on. MotA's able to really show the scale of it, both in the air and on the ground (that scene in germany during episode 6 was both harrowing and fantastic, also the inclusion of the actual children forced to fight nearer to the war's end in the finale). idk i just liked how it was able to zoom in and zoom out (and in and out again) in a way that the other shows weren't.
another thing it's got that the other shows don't is Really driving home how young everyone is (not "child soldier" young, but damn young). the cast is full of baby faces (rip babyface). a lot of ww2 shows/movies don't bother casting to reflect this, but i think overlooking that takes away from the overall impact. you browse through some old newspaper articles or photos of soldiers during ww2 enough and you're gonna Regularly get hit with the face of someone who looks like they could've sat in the desk next to you during a high school lit class. a lot of those b&w grinning faces look like kids bc they pretty much were (more so if they lied about their age). you don't really get that in BoB or TP (it's Crazy when the real life pics of the soldiers portrayed in those shows look younger than the actors).
i'm mixed about the tuskegee airmen. what we have, i love (thank you, dee rees). unfortunately, my biggest irk is that it leaves me wanting more of them, which i won't ever get. speaking as a black person (not speaking for All black people, just how i personally feel about it), having them included feels like a catch-22. if they weren't included in any capacity (all while knowing there were whole tuskegee airmen in stalag iii with the white main characters), there'd be a problem. however, including them (all while having these time constraints and not enough focus on them) leads to the feeling of having them "tokenized" (which i can see). there's no world where there'd be 50/50 split (even a 70/30 split) bc, at that point, just give them a show of their own. but there'd still be a general annoyance that big budget ww2 shows are only ever white. on the other hand, hanks and spielberg and orloff and miller and all the directors (except dee rees) are white, and how good of a story about black people are you really gonna get from the perspective of nonblack people? that in mind, i personally don't feel put-off by having the three tuskegee airmen in the posters/trailers/promos, bc i just Know there'd be a whole nother problem if they weren't included in them at all despite being in the show for however long (it'd be even worse if they made their pictures smaller). like i don't work in advertising, but i don't know if a "sweet spot" even exists for something like this. people would be pissed off no matter what imo (i'm also speaking with a bias here bc i had to browse through sooooo many comments written by white guys whining and crying and pissing and shitting themselves once they learned that the tuskegee airmen were gonna be in the show in Any capacity, so i'm just cool knowing they're in shambles rn (and josiah cross- he played richard macon- always goes Wild seeing his face in the promos, and his joy is pretty contagious).
i give it somewhere like a 7.5-8/10. 3.75 stars out of 5. not perfect, subject to change, gotta marinate, but i'm overall happy with it! MotA's best episodes are better than many other individual hbo war episodes. should i be grading it using the overall sum of its parts, not just the different parts? idk, i'm not being paid to grade lol.
#i feel like i'm knocking the pacific too much in this even when i like the pacific. i just like it much less#i've talked my sister's ear off enough about it (she adores the pacific the way i do band of brothers)#and like i've got plenty of issues with band of brothers but it just does it for me. idk. i'm complicated by avril lavigne#this is an essay. my GOD is this an essay#but better to vomit it all out now so i can look over it later and see how my opinion changes over time. i want to archive my fresh thought#masters of the air#hbo war#masters of the air spoilers#mota spoilers#band of brothers#the pacific#for once i'm not spam-tagging those. i talk about them a decent amount in here. sorry for the people who don't go here tho#long post

alas, turns out grad school is hard so i haven't been drawing much of anything BUT. now. some side characters for yall
#original#ocs#art#satyrs#artists on tumblr#character design#Heiti Varrater#Tcham Bakome#Angus Singh#HAII. i've needed to design these 3 in particular for EVER. finally i have done eet#i actually. really REALLY like how bakome turned out. he looks FANTASTIC#bang on with this guy. he looks great#also rlly like how singh turned out. that dude is singh for sure#heiti.... she's giving me problems. as she does best#this is her 2nd design now and it's better than my first but theres something still missing. idk what#ill probably continue to refine her with time#grouping her with these 2 is kinda odd cause like. she has nothing to do with them other than being in the same general storyline#like she never really meets them?? maybe once for a brief period. idk i havent thought about it much#they're on different ships. theyre doin different things#but theyre all side characters that are relatively important SO. put them together#ive resigned to just. drawing humans with pointy ears. bcause why the fuck wouldnt i#every other species gets fun ears. give humans some point to em why not#there is a. range. of feelings about these guys#LOVE heiti. she sucks (affectionate). she's fantastic. obsessed with her#bakome has lots going on and im not even sure of most of it. but he is VERY interesting and he occupies a cool middle space of like.#doing no harm but preventing no harm either. doing no harm but allowing harm to be done. he has morality but he turns the other way#idk. i like him and i think he borders on sucks but either way he's interesting#and then there singh. god he sucks. he sucks so bad. worst of em all. captain worst#the harm that is being done is allowed by him because hes the captain and that's if hes not just doing it himself. fuck that guy#i do think hes fun tho. hes. a little flatter than bakome rn but hes still got SOME interesting stuff going on. just a lil

i am once again thinking of a good omens wicked au, but this time instead of the obvious crowley as elphaba and aziraphale and glinda, im thinking of the OPPOSITE.
im thinking of how AZIRAPHALE fits elphaba's character in that he is an outsider amongst his peers and he's a little bit awkward and he's got so much faith in the almighty/the wizard. he's got "parents" (read: god) who expect so much from him and siblings who are ashamed of him. and he's got dreams! he wants to do big things! he wants to work hand in hand with and make the almighty/the wizard proud!
and im thinking about how CROWLEY fits glindas character in the sense that he's suave and charming and people are drawn to him. he knows how to talk to them and how to get them to do what he wants, and he's the one that teaches aziraphale things about the world (a la popular, like tempting aziraphale into eating meat and drinking wine and all these very human things he never would have thought to do without crowleys influence).
im thinking of how the two of them start out absolutely loathing each other, as mortal enemies, one could say... but how over time and as they bond more and more, as they see different sides of one another, that loathing turns into something else. something just as strong, just as passionate, but softer. gentler. sweeter. it turns into love.
and of course everything gets shattered when upon meeting his idol, aziraphale learns that god isn't what he thought she was. it turns out god is just a pipe dream. all there is is a floating head, the metatron, posing as god. and not at all the great and powerful entity aziraphale believed. and the metatron CANT help aziraphale, can't fix him. and thus the downfall of aziraphale begins.
#good omens#ineffable husbands#crowley#aziraphale#wicked#go wicked au#i am ALWAYS thinking about a go wicked au#ALSO thinking about how in this version of the au muriel could be nessa#and honestly gabriel would make a decent fiyero but like if you took out the romance part LOL bc i cannot see CROWLEY esp falling for him#i can't see aziraphale either but like i could see him as more likely than crowley certainly#but anyways someone random as fiyero and then its like aziraphale thinks hes jealous bc he likes fiyero#but ACTUALLY its fiyero hes jealous OF bc fiyero is the one that has crowley fawning all over him#but then crowley doesn't ACTUALLY like fiyero like he thinks he does. hes just using him as a distraction from his REAL feelings#(cough aziraphale)#HONESTLY this all works BETTER for their characters imo than the og roles we automatically think for them#EXCEPT for the fact that like OBVIOUSLY the whole hell being the bad witch and heaven being the good witch makes more sense#PLUS if crowley was elphaba then when she goes Full Wicked Witch at the end that is very much The Fall coded#so like THAT works better that way#BUT you could always turn things on its head and make AZIRAPHALE fall in the end#idk theres a lot of logistics that would have to be worked out and some stuff that would have to be changed to fit these characters ofc#if an au were to be written anyways#BUT YEAH I AM THINKINâ˘ď¸

ugh itâs just. i really do love arcane so so much. which is why s2 is stinging so bad. iâm disappointed in a lot of it and i think iâm always gonna mourn the potential it had. but all iâve been doing since act 3 dropped is stewing over it and talking with my friends about it and airing out our grievances and iâm tired. iâm tired of being grumpy over it. i just want to love it for everything it did right and accept it for everything it fell short in. but itâs gonna hurt for a while
#iâm never gonna get over how sidelined vi is specifically#and i saw a tweet by christian linke where he addressed how she got less screen time s2#and he literally said âyeah as writers we were interested in other characters idk what else to sayâ#LIKE HELLO???? YOU WROTE THE SHOW ABOUT TWO SISTERS AND THEN YOU STOPPED CARING ABOUT ONE OF THEM?????? HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE#iâm just. UGH. as soon as i feel like im getting over it i remember something that makes me grumpy again#but then itâs also like. god i loved when me and my friends were watching together and weâd all react to how gorgeous a shot is or how cool#a fight scene was or smth. and even after when we were talking about what we liked and didnât liked it still was just like.#wow i love how much this show has brought all of us together and made us think and feel in ways we never have before#after all of this iâm still like i love you i love you i love you#anyways i just needed to get this out#other people have made posts that say shit better than i have so im not gonna bother trying to write my own in depth rants#iâm just gonna leave it here#my posts#personal

ok at the point now where looking at an image of dennis makes me want to smash my head through a wall
#ada speaks#idk how ppl exist in this fandom who don't feel bad for him tbh#which is the last thing den wants bc being perceived as weak and pitiable is devastating to him but#chasing this mfer down to give him a hug#he is so. fucked up. he has been fucked up by every adult in his life.#i think the fandom perceives him as this spoiled rich kid who had it better than most of the gang but the reality is#he was failed just like the rest of them and it's almost worse because he doesn't â and almost CAN'T â recognize this#letting the protective ego-boosting and boasting drop leads to him having to confront SO much baggage and i don't think he is mentally able#i think he DOES know deep down that everything is a lie and he has been hurt because we see that self awareness in ptsdee and tends bar#but his relationship with everyone in the gang is so strained that i don't think he would be able to have a moment like charlie did in s15#even in tends bar there's a moment where they all recognize something is going on with him but immediately place him at the center#because he's the problem with him. anything done to him is his fault. it's not only something he reinforces. the gang does too#this must be because *dennis* has no feelings and he hates valentines day because everyone else is unlike him which makes *him* mad#the entire gang has an issue placing blame on themselves but to not even be able to conceive of dennis being hurt by them is. telling#because he's inhuman to them. it's how he's propped himself up and yet simultaneously hopes that they will see through that act#the way he reworks things in his mind so that everything is a consequence of his grand plan#means that he is always at fault regardless of whether he brushes the blame off#so he is not a *victim* of anyone else. because this was all under his control. he wasn't raped because he was initiating it.#klinsky was His Conquest. he was fourteen and she was in her fifties but he forced himself on her so that makes it His Fault.#it was a two way road. he's fourteen. and he 'entered' her. he's fourteen. but she was uncomfortable with his advances. but he was fourteen#cw csa mention

Thinks abt Sif Odile duo looping au. When the two who can't read eachother for shit get thrown into the horrors together
#rat rambles#stars posting#my favorite sif relationship within the party is them and odile so I had to at least try rotating this idea in my head even if trying to#write these guys makes me anxious as hell#its just like. siffrin has such a complex around this middle age woman its both funny and sad to me#and odile just does not realize this and it creates such a rift between their understanding of eachother#they both care abt eachother so much but it's hard for them to bridge that gap sometimes#and its a weird situation imaging them looping together because idk if thatd help things or make them way worse#because siffrin is allergic to dealing with his own issues and odile struggles with addressing said issues when shes not certain of what#they are and since she's not particularly great at reading the emotional side of things she'd probably struggle a lot with that#its just interesting imagining how the two could potentially both grow closer and drift farther apart over the course of the loops#which applies to all duo looping aus but Im particularly invested in these two so theyre who Im thinking abt#like idk just something abt odile slowly realizing how sif sees her appeals to me deeply#also I like thinking abt early on stuff where it's more lighthearted and they get to have some fun in the early loope#I do think theres a lot of awkwardness in the air especially on siffrins end but I like to think theyd have a lil fun with it#for better or for worse in the long run#odile and siffrin sitting clueless as they hand craft a whole bunch of new things for siffrin to beat himself up over later#and odile as well I want her to realize that sif has been internalizing this shit and quietly spiral over it#anyways I need to to to bed now gn

hes cute when he thinks hes about to be murdered
#see? missy couldve said that#i do think that like 13 does this better maybe?#in general i have the impression 13 is less needlessly mean or insulting to bystanders than previous doctors#which HELPS in not accidentally turning people against you in stressful situations#but also i feel like she maybe.....hm....takes control of rooms in a slightly smoother way? slightly less noticeably. she announces it less#might be a combination of how bystanders are written and also her appearance tbh she gets maybe underestimated easier#but also i think the bubbly thing helps. she PRESENTS as nonthreatening more than 10 or 12 do#dont really recall 11 much at the moment but i think he might be a bit more like her in this regard? wanting family etc#though he does also insult people#but my impression might be a bit skewed rn bc ive got like the doctors daughter and sontaran 2 parter and now this all in a row#and maybe it just gives a skewed perception of 10#although now that i just listed all those eps thats kind of a lot of eps so maybe he really is just like this.#not entirely sure if 13 really actually is Less like this tho or if my impression of HER is actually skewed#but i feel like 13 like. takes control from out of the spotlight slightly more than stepping into it#but that might be just smth i made up#im trying to think of specific scenes to use as examples for or against but cant really think of anything#i know she Does use the 'did i not mention? im really clever' at least once in 11x2 with the woman#it's just if you say it with that bubbly friendliness instead of selfimportant seriousness then its less offputting idk#it IS specifically the thing that catches up with 10 here tho so maybe my perception IS skewed for both of them actuallyl#anyway. 13 IS less insulting in general#she gets bitchy when she feels threatened but she really does try her best she wasnt wrong abt that#and its smart too#better not to give people reason to dislike you from the getgo#in case of tense bus rides you know

I am the first to point out that, of the two leads in P&P, Lizzyâs is the far deeper moral transformation and to say that Darcyâs character especially re: his flaws is wildly misunderstood and frequently painted out worse than he is out of fear of his particular kind of power. All of that said, I do love that Lizzy is just like âno, the way you treat me isnât good enough and I will not simply accept itâ
#and the fact that he agrees with her completely and does something about it#proves how fundamentally good he is and always has been#idk. I just love that she isnât afraid of him#and that she DOESNât ever sort of like make up a tragic story for him for his silence and reserve#sheâs just like. what is that Man doing over there in the corner#if That Man liked me he would show it differently#that Man should treat people better in social situations#and like. she isnât wholly wrong#she is wrong about a lot as regards him#but her mistakes (some part of them) is just common man refreshing and he sees the sense in them#and again. there is no fear#both Bingley and Georgianna are a little afraid of him#and Bingley needs to take responsibility for his own actions nonetheless#but he feels the force of the personality! and sometimes has trouble standing up to it!#Georgiannaâs fear is much more awe/respect/little sister love#But I just#there is something about Lizzy where sheâs just so unafraid of him#and so uninterested in being awed by him in a certain way#and itâs so good for him and his generous heart absolutely loves that#basically Darcy had just gotten used to being the coolest/smartest person in the room#and had grown complacent#(because he really isnât fundamentally bad mannered. even before)#and thereâs a lot of reasons all the stuff comes out of his mouth during the first proposal#and a lot of it is the expression of the internal war heâs been fighting#And tbh itâs both honest romantic and valid#and yet all of that said Lizzy is still like âand I have to hear you say this about my family why?â#and her explosive anger towards him is rooted in so much that ISNât fair#and (again) the deeper moral transformation is hers I fully believe that#but that part of Lizzy thatâs just like âI am too cool and interesting for you to be speaking to me like thisâ#âI am just as cool and interesting as you and I am unafraid of youâ is so valid and so funny

#personal#ugh#not a day goes by where i dont think of her /:#we were such good friends /:#and like admittedly i needed to take space after all that i don't regret it#but i h8 that she prematurely apologized b4 even hearing my frustrations or why i was hurt#bc she apologized for what she THOUGHT i wanted to hear#and it sucks /: cause i really hope she's doing better#i hope shes ok#and i miss her#but i cannot bring myself to message her bc like......#i just don't understand how you hear your friends say something shitty happened with someone ur involved with#and blow up at them and demand proof of it#like i dont care how stressed you are with other stuff .......... who does that??????#nvm the fact that like. majority of the stress she had expressed to me then was literally about...... the ppl who did the fucked shit.......#idk. im just sad#she made me feel so seen and held and heard and we were just friends but like..... i cherished her so much ):#ALSO NVM THE FACT THE DAY BEFORE SHE DID THIS I LITERALLY TOLD HER (after talking to her abt smthn separate) tht#the only way we'd stop being friends is if she did LITERALLY exactly what she did#and yeah she sent it to my Wife's DMs#but honestly that makes it worse cause she knew i was there#nd treated my wife after all that like she was an evil meanie while she apologized to me#(which imo idc it reads and transmisogyny)#and she just like. up and left Everything b4 realizing she fucked up#like she did choose this#and im respecting that and respecting myself enough not to try running and begging her to be friends again#i just. idk man. it sucks

Do you hang out with Ramona or Knives much when Scott or Neil aren't around? Ever since your roommate shanked you in the back it seems like you don't have a lot of girlfriends, just bros.
I try to. I want to. They're both so much nicer to hang around, you know? So much less confusing. At least in an uncomfortable manner
And you're right, yeah. Ever since Hollie it's been a lot of Stephen and Joseph and Scott- and with Joseph it's all awkward since he's Hollie's friend. Just a lot of unnecessary bullshit, generally. I don't want all that.
I like hanging out with Ramona, Lisa, Knives... fuck, even Julie at this point, even if she bores me to tear sometimes. I miss feeling light, ya know?
#ramona is just so... wow... you know???#i mean. jeez. share a little in that perfection you bitch#i say that affectionately.#i seriously love ramona. she's an angel. she deserves so much better than scott#i mean she's not like an angel angel but you understand i hope#and knives is just this little ray of sunshine i want to protect you know?#she talks to me sometimes about how stuoid the whole scott situation is and all i can do is nod in agreement because she's just... right??#boys are so stupid. i dont know why i let them bother me so much#pine.txt#anon#asks#spto#sp comic#spvtw#kim pine#rp#?#(ooc: ty so so much for the ask! hope this is coherent i am so off kilter rn skfhfjdjd)#(ooc: alcohol seriously does not normally effect me this much idk whats up. maybe im just downing more at a time before breaking???l#(ooc; idk either way hope this is a fair enough response)#spvtwtg#drunk kim
