Sneak peek: Joel and Ellie return to Jackson, Tommy gets them set up in a home on the outskirts of the community (per Joel’s request). Joel notices they have a neighbor and takes an interest in her. Tommy lets him know that they don’t know much about you other than you had been through some serious shit, but that you haven’t spoken a word since you’d arrived in Jackson. Tommy asks Joel to keep an eye on you…and in doing so, Joel may just be able to break through your defenses.

“Joel, it’s really good to have you guys back here…safe.” Tommy said, pulling away from Joel.

“We’re glad to be back.” Joel grunted.

“Well, I have you guys situated in a house on the outermost part of the community. I figured you’d prefer it that way.” Tommy explained.

“Thanks Tommy.” Joel nodded.

Tommy led Ellie and Joel over to a house that was quite literally on the outskirts of the Jackson compound. Joel took note of the lack of neighbors as they walked further and further and it put his mind at ease, knowing he’d have some privacy. As they neared the house, it was Ellie who noticed the small white house just off to the left of their own.

“Who lives there?” Ellie questioned.

“Oh, that’s Y/N’s house. She’s real quiet, y’all won’t have to worry about her stirring up any trouble.” Tommy informed.

“I thought you said no neighbors?” Joel gruffed.

“Joel, she’s quiet. You don’t have to worry about that. Honestly, I was kind of hoping you’d keep an eye on her, just make sure she’s okay.” Tommy pleaded.

“Tommy, I’m not gonna play babysitter for a grown ass woman.”

“That’s not what I’m askin’ and you know it. She just – she’s been through it. She keeps to herself mostly and Maria and I worry about her.” Tommy explained.

“Fine. I’ll keep an eye on her. But I’m not gonna go and chit chat with her.” Joel rolled his eyes.

“I wouldn’t expect that.” Tommy began. “From either of you.” He mumbled. “Why don’t y’all head in and get settled, you can meet Maria and me for dinner. Sound good?”

“We will be there!” Ellie replied, pulling Joel inside by the sleeve before he could decline.

Joel couldn’t help but wonder why Tommy was so worried about you. Tommy had boasted about how the people of Jackson were all strong and each held their own. They wouldn’t be here otherwise. So, what was your deal? He’d mentioned that you had gone through some tough shit, but what was it? He had to say, he was intrigued.

His interest only grew once he saw you for the first time. It was about a week after his and Ellie’s arrival back in Jackson. You had been walking around the mess hall with a basket full of homemade goods, passing them around to people. He’d seen you pass out a few bottles of what he assumed to be some sort of toiletries as well as some clothing items to various people.

Joel waited until Ellie had run off to sit with some of her new friends to ask about you.

“So, what’s her deal?” Joel inquired.

“Who? Y/N…I thought you weren’t playing babysitter?” Tommy teased.

“I’m not. I just want to know why you think she needs looking after.” Joel replied.

“Honestly Joel, we don’t know much about her. She hasn’t said a single word in the four years she’s lived here.” Maria informed.

“Bullshit. She’s said somethin’ at some point.” Joel scoffed.

“No, Joel she really hasn’t. She knows some sign, but she mostly writes stuff down if she really needs to communicate.” Tommy said.

“Damn. Well, what’s her role around here since she doesn’t talk?” Joel couldn’t help but be confused.

“She makes all sorts of stuff for the people of our community. She’s figured out how to make shampoo, soap, lotion, sunblock, toothpaste…I mean the list goes on. She also repairs clothing when necessary, she’s the best seamstress in town.” Maria smiled at how wonderful you’d been since your arrival, jumping right in to contribute.

Joel was taken aback at how much you clearly brought to the community. Despite your silence, you’d made yourself known. Joel could see how you were well liked based on the greetings you’d received from those you were delivering to. He found it very odd that you’d keep to yourself despite Jackson’s fondness for you.

Joel had always been a loner, but it had been due to his stubbornness, sarcasm, potty mouth and overall negative attitude. His mother had always said “Joel, ever the pessimist” when he’d say something even remotely negative in his youth.

Learning all this about you had only transformed Joel’s intrigue into a need to know you. He couldn’t help how he was drawn to you, he wondered if it was because, perhaps, you were kindred spirits.

Joel woke with a gasp, his body covered in a cold sweat. Another nightmare, it had been the same recurring dream night after night since he’d found Ellie. Every time he made it through the hospital, and he’d gotten to the operating room, only this time he barges in to see the doctor holding her brain in his hands.

He woke up the same way too. Startled awake, laying in a pool of his own sweat. Joel tried to get back to sleep, but it was no use. He thought about it and decided to take a walk to clear his mind, now that he and Ellie were in the safe confines of Jackson, he was able to do so.

Joel didn’t want to stray too far in the case that Ellie needed him, so he was more so pacing from the front of their house, over to the front of yours. It was a warm and humid evening; Jackson had been nearing Autumn and Joel was looking forward to the break in the weather.

A muffled shout pulled Joel’s attention from smacking the mosquito that had surely bitten him by now. He glanced back toward his house to see if Ellie’s light had been turned on – nothing. He shook his head, ready to brush away the thought when he heard a louder scream, only it was coming from your home.

Joel rushed to the door listening just to be sure and when he heard you scream again he was quick to open the door. He was surprised to find it unlocked, although the people of Jackson seemed at ease in their community.

He swiftly surveyed the room, desperate to find you and ensure your safety. Joel found you thrashing around on your couch, screaming, begging for help. He made his way over to where you were laying and gently placed his hand on your shoulder. He shook you a few times to rouse you, but when you woke, you hadn’t reacted how Joel would have expected.

“What? What are you doing here? GET OUT!” You shouted, pushing Joel away from you.

Joel shot up, mostly in shock at hearing you speak for the first time, but also to follow your request. He made his leave, not wanting to upset you any further.

You couldn’t believe it. Joel had come into your home and woken you up. What was he thinking? Why had he been there? Had your nightmare haunted you so badly that your screams could be heard from his home? You were horrified and humiliated. You had done so well, hiding your demons, shoving them down so far that no one could see, and in a single night they’d all come out and bore themselves to none other than Joel miller.

The next few days were horrible. You had done everything in your power to avoid Joel, who seemed to be seeking you out. On top of that, your insomnia had made a wonderful return. Your mind refusing respite in fear of Joel finding you in another traumatic night terror.

You weren’t sure what had even caused your nightmare that night. You hadn’t had one in nearly a year, but thinking about it, there were a few potential triggers that came to mind. The first possibility was Maria being far enough along in her pregnancy to be showing, the second being Ellie’s striking similarities to your sister, and the last being Tommy’s mention of them finding and taking care of some raiders on his patrol that day.

Hell, it was probably a combination of all those things that had you reliving some of the worst moments of your life. You hoped that the feelings would soon pass so you could get some sleep.

“Tommy, I need you to be straight with me. What happened to Y/N before she got here? Like what do you know about her?” Joel pushed.

“Joel, I already told you we don’t know much.” Tommy huffed.

“But you know something!”

“Okay listen, she arrived here alone. She had a small pack with her and that was it. Maria and I sat with her and asked her dozens of questions, and we didn’t get a single word out of her. I stepped out to deal with something and when I got back, she had been writing her responses to Maria. I know that she had previously been with a group but none of them survived. And based on what I saw, I’d say whatever happened wasn’t pretty.” Tommy explained.

Joel just nodded, content with learning more about you. But still so curious to know what was haunting you. He couldn’t shake the feeling of wanting to protect you. Of wanting to find what was causing you harm and making it so it could never hurt you again. He’s trying desperately to figure out this need to hold you and make everything okay, why he was so drawn to you.

“Look Joel, Maria told you how much she does for the community, and you’ve seen for yourself that she sticks to herself, she’s quiet, and she doesn’t cause trouble. So, we don’t push her to know more. The last thing I will say is that whatever she went through…she is a damn good shot. Do with that information what you will.” Tommy patted Joel on the shoulder and walked off.

Joel sat with the information for a bit. Had you been forced to kill your way to Jackson, is that what was haunting you? That is something that is justified, those things, they aren’t people anymore and raiders well if you didn’t kill them, then they surely would kill you so again justified. It had to have been something far worse if you refused to speak.

Joel decided he’d observe you, and he’d be there when you had another nightmare. Since losing Sarah, Joel hadn’t really wanted to be around anyone. Tess was stubborn, more so than Joel, so she was able to force herself in – and even then he didn’t open up much. And well, Ellie, she was his second chance at being a dad. But you, you had come in and taken up residency in Joel’s mind and it was because of that feeling, one he hadn’t experienced in a long time, that he knew he needed to break down your walls.

And that is how Joel found himself trying to comfort you through another nightmare. Joel had been out walking late at night again, the nights had started to finally cool off and he’d found it helped clear his head to take walks like this one.

It was nearing two in the morning when he heard it, your cries for help. He made his way up your porch steps and carefully tried the handle, saying a silent cheer when the handle turned, and the door gave way.

This had been different than the last time, as he approached you, he noticed the tear tracks lining your cheeks and he could hear your quiet whimpers. He knew he had to do this right if he was going to get you to let him in.

“Sweetheart? Wake up, you’re safe. I’m here and you are okay.” He gently shook you.

You woke up, startled once again to find Joel Miller is the one waking you. This man had a lot of nerve letting himself into your house, yet again, and while you’d love to give him an earful right now, the pain of what your nightmare had brought forth in your mind was crippling.

So, you threw yourself into Joel’s arms. He wrapped himself around you and repositioned himself, so he was sat on the couch, and you were in his lap. Your face was buried in his neck and his arms were tight around your waist. He ran his fingers gently through your hair and whispered reassurances in your ear.

He held you until you fell asleep and when you woke up at sunrise, he released you and saw himself out. He knew he had to gain your trust, and it would take time. This is how it would need to be done, he would have to keep quiet and leave when the morning came.

A few hours later, after he and Ellie had breakfast, she was heading out to school. Joel was expecting her to leave like usual, so he was pretty confused when she returned to the kitchen carrying a small wicker basket.

“This was on the porch, I gotta head to class or I’ll be late!” She waved and headed out.

“Thanks kiddo. Have a good day.” Joel said goodbye.

He slowly pulled the items from the basket and a small smile graced his features. He brought them out one-by-one, a bottle of sunscreen, a bar of soap, some solid deodorant and a new flannel shirt. Beneath everything was a small note.

"Joel, I wanted to give you these as a sort of thank you and apology. Sorry for yelling at you that first night and thank you for last night. I figured you and Ellie could use some hygiene products that weren’t pre-apocalyptic. I also noticed how torn up your flannel had been and wanted you to have one that wasn’t threadbare.                                                                                                 -Y/N”

Joel’s smile grew, this was just the beginning of his mission to break down your walls and it was off to a successful start.

You proceeded to have nightmares at least twice a week for the next three months. Joel was with you for every single one. Each time he’d gently wake you and he’d shush you, assuring that you were okay. The only thing that had changed was that more recently, Joel would carry you off of the couch and to your room, where he’d hold you close until you fell asleep.

In the last week the nightmares had come every night, and while Joel so badly wanted to ask why, he knew that he had to let you come to him. You had spoken to him in two-to-three-word responses in the last few weeks and Joel was so glad that you’d been able to open up to him even that much.

What he didn’t know was that the reason your nightmares had become more frequent was because Maria had finally given birth. Seeing her with her baby had been killing you, it had brought back so many awful memories and you knew that you’d need to tell Joel. You’d wanted to tell him days ago why you had been having such a hard time, but you were also terrified of it changing the dynamic between you.

Something was different tonight; you had slipped Joel a note during dinner at the mess hall, inviting him to come by your place a bit earlier. When he arrived you couldn’t help but be nervous, you felt so unsure of everything, but you were starting to trust Joel and some part of you knew that he would understand everything.

You had decided it was now or never. He had been with you every night of the week and he never pushed you to share. He told you about what he had been through and some of the things he had done to get here and had let you meet him with silence. You supposed now was your turn to share.

“Joel?”

“Yeah sweetheart?” He tried to hide his surprise at your initiation.

“I want to tell you what happened…is that okay?”

“Of course, sweet girl. Only share what you’re comfortable with okay? I ain’t goin’ anywhere.” Joel pressed a light kiss to your temple.

“So, it started with my sister and I, she was younger than me, Ellie reminds me a lot of her. She and I well, we got caught up with these raiders. Well, they, they uh…” You choked.

“It’s okay honey, take your time.” Joel rubbed a soothing hand down your spine.

“They forced themselves on us and left us both beaten and bloody. After that, my sister was in a bad way Joel. She uh, she was reckless and careless, and she got herself killed. And well, I ended up pregnant. I found my way to this small group of people that were headed here to Jackson. I guess they had heard it was a community and it was safe. We lost people along the way and sometimes we’d stop and stay somewhere for a month or so if we found it suitable. Anyway, by this time there’s only four of us left and I had my baby…” Tears started freely flowing down your face and Joel gently wiped them away.

“Sweetheart you really don’t have to…” Joel could tell where this was going.

“I need to say it. I’ve never said this out loud and I need to. My son was born, and he was beautiful. But he had colic and so he cried all the time. I did everything I could to keep him quiet as we went but it was putting us in danger, and I knew it. I offered to let them go on without me, I told them that he and I would come when he’d grown out of it. But a little while later I’d woken up to find him dead.” You sobbed. “They had suffocated him, claiming that we’d never get anywhere with him crying all the time and that they didn’t want to leave me behind. I killed them all Joel. I didn’t even hesitate. I pulled my gun out and I shot all three of them and then I left and never turned back.”

Everything came together, it had all started to make perfect sense. You’d held onto this guilt for the last four to five years. Survivors guilt over the loss of your sister, guilt of not being there for your child – something Joel knew all too well, and the guilt of killing people that you once cared about. He completely understood, he too would’ve stayed silent had he been through all that you had. What is there to say when you’ve lost everyone.

Joel held you tighter, allowing you to cry softly into his chest. He wanted to give you a few moments to calm yourself down before he said anything to you. He knew how delicate this situation was, and he needed to do things right.

“Sweetheart, I want to start by saying how sorry I am. I am so sorry you had to go through all of that. I also want you to know that you can’t feel guilty, and I know that it’s easier said than done but darlin’ you did everything you needed to in order to survive. You wouldn’t be here any other way baby girl.” Joel pressed his lips to your forehead.

“Thank you Joel. For being here and for – for listening to me. I can’t quite explain it, but I trust you and so, I don’t know, I just wanted to tell you. Having you around has made me feel better honestly and it’s sort of the only way I can sleep anymore.” You explained.

“I trust you too baby, and you’re not the only one. I sleep better with you here too, having you in my arms these last few months, it’s been amazing. Besides Tommy and Ellie, I think you’re about the only person I trust.” Joel smiled down at you.

From then on, things had changed between Joel and you. He was the only person you talked to, you shared everything with him. Joel and you spent every night together some nights at your place and more recently, some nights at his. Initially, you’d expressed your worries in doing so, you told him you didn’t want the entire town to know, and you were worried about running into Ellie in the hallway.

Joel had told you that there was no need for some public spectacle and that there was no need for worries that it would get out amongst the townies. He also reassured you that Ellie was a good kid, and she could keep a secret.

So, little by little you opened up to Joel, Ellie, and soon enough Maria and Tommy too. The five of you had become a family, you’d found that you fit into it almost too well, so much so that it was beginning to scare you.

Despite your fears, you allowed yourself to fall. Joel had proven to you time and time again that he was there for you and that he wasn’t going anywhere. He’d also gotten you living by the philosophy that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and you needed to take this life while you had it.

So, you did.

Hey batman/batfam people, I wanted to talk about something. I know this might not be received well, but...this is my blog. So if you disagree with me, feel free to block me! Literally that's what's great about this site. (I've been trying to do so on my end, but I thought I'd reach out a bit.....idk maybe try to form some understanding?)

I have been a batman fan since like...age 13 or something. Batman as a character means so fucking much to me, as does all his kids and massive extended family. (can't forget Alfred, Kate, Lucius, and Jeff Gordon!!) And I know that they mean a lot to you guys too.

In comic book and fandom spaces we talk a lot about misrepresentation of characters in fandom, but even in "canon" or rather published/produced content. I have beef with a lot of live action adaptions of Batman for example.

The thing with comic book characters, even more than some fandoms/pieces of media, is that there is SO MUCH content out there, that two people can say they like this one character but those two versions might be in total contradiction. But does that make one right over the other? does that make one superior?

Now, I hate Ben Affleck's Batman. And to fans of his, I'd say, you want the punisher, not Batman, because to me, that goes against who Batman is fundamentally. I read the comics, watch a lot of the animated stuff, and formed my own opinion and version of Batman. However, and this seems to be a controversial take, i really enjoy Wayne Family Adventures.

I see a lot of hate on here for WFA (and on tiktok but they're another beast), which, it's not for everyone, that's okay! Not everyone has to like what I like. But what I don't agree with, is that people who like WFA are seen as "not true batman fans", "they haven't ever read a comic". "they only like the flat fanon versions of the characters", etc.

These comments I would like to rebut- some comic readers such as myself might enjoy WFA. There might be people that have never read a comic or even watched anything batman related but like WFA. Are they not valid to enjoy that and have their own fandom for that? Are they not allowed to be fans of Batman?

I also would ask, how much of WFA did you actually read? In it's nature, it's suppose to be the bat family on their time off, or more light stories, but it actually addresses things like Jason's trauma, Duke moving in to the Manor, Damian struggling to fit in at school, things like that. Now if you read pretty far and still didn't like the portrayal of the characters, that's fine, I'm not asking you to change your opinion, however I am asking you to make space for those who do enjoy it, or that WFA is their first introduction or only experience with the Batman and co.

WFA isn't perfect, but it holds a special place in my heart, and gives me more content for Not Perfect but Trying and Cares Dad Bruce Wayne which I am grateful for. And tbh I feel like it just shows other sides to the characters we don't see that often!

And again, obvi people have their opinions, I guess I'm just asking for us to be more aware and create a space where people can feel free and excited to talk about these characters that we all love. I enjoy content and discussions I see in the tags and different blogs but then I see the hate for WFA fans and it just puts a real damper on otherwise really good content.

So umm I wanna start writing hxh stuff but I'm scared it'll be really ooc :(( I watched the whole anime, restarting it and I'm reading the Manga too so I know the personalities of the characters well but I'm still not confident I can portray it right... it would be super embarrassing if I post my first story/ headcanon and the comments i get are "they wouldnt say that" "they wouldnt do that" "that wouldnt happen" 😭the way you write characters sound so like them and I rlly wanna make hcs and stories like you so pls spill your secrets 🙏🙏 if it helps, the characters I think I'll be most writing for are the main 4, kalluto and alluka (they're so underrated!!) mb hisoka andddd silva & kikyo? (I kinda wanna make some cute scenarios w them like they go on a date or smthing 🥺 idk why) but ofc, I would love to learn how to write for the majority of the hxh characters. But ummm it's okay if u don't have any advice, I'll just cry infront of my blank Google docs page 😔😔 (I'm jk, have a good day!!)

a/n~ so sorry if this sucks cause ive never given a tutorial for my writing but i will DO MY BEST

so you said you wanted to write cute scenarios of dates for the hxh main four+ hisoka, silva , and kikyo! first thing i usually consider when i get requests especially, or just when i have an idea, is: would this character even do this? like if someone asks me, “hey, can you write headcanons for illumi zoldyck with a soft/sweet/kind s/o?” that would be possible (though maybe a little far-fetched canonically). it’s fine to stretch those boundaries a bit for fanfiction, i think. but if that request had instead been like “can you write reader x soft/sweet/kind illumi?” that would’ve been a hard no. don’t alter characters’ natural personalities because then it’s not the same character. what sometimes helps me is, especially if i haven’t watched or read any media of the character im writing for in a while, is looking up the character’s wiki on the FANDOM site and reading through their personality traits as well as their key moments because it helps me to determine what the character would do in the story and how they might react to some things. feel free to also go back and look at clips of the anime or pages of the manga; i find it helps as well!

so for what you want to write specifically, cute dating scenarios, i think that most of the characters you’ve chosen are a good fit. the main four are good for a prompt like that, and the zoldyck children you’ve chosen can be fitting as well. but as for hisoka, kikyo, and silva, that kind of prompt might not fit so well because obviously these characters can’t be seen as sweet or kind or loving. has hisoka ever expressed any interest in wooing someone properly or is he someone who operates on lust? did kikyo and silva court each other and go on little dates or was their marriage probably arranged/forced/only useful for selfish purposes? do their personalities even allow for sentiments like dates? would they even consider that? before writing something ask yourself if you can really see the character doing that clearly in your mind.

i think it’s a great thing that you’ve watched and read the respective canon content of your characters, and it’s good to refer to it if you ever find yourself struggling to characterize someone accurately. however, it is fanfiction, so don’t feel like you need to be super rigid. write whatever you’d like, honestly. but here’s a really common thing i notice when people write fanfiction: they take one aspect of the character and run the shit into the ground. a prime example of this is hobie brown from across the spiderverse and his “i don’t believe in consistency” line. like Jesus Christ. well-written fictional characters, like the ones of hxh, are often as versatile as real people are. make sure the character doesn’t feel like some one-dimensional version of themselves, and please don’t write for the character only based on one aspect of their personality. for example, hisoka is rather unpredictable, so that’s something you’d probably want to incorporate into writings for him. but for characters like most of the zoldycks, you’re going to want to tread a little lighter since they aren’t the main characters and thus we don’t see a whole lot of them. in situations like this, you might have to focus on just what you can see of them. so again, just ask yourself if you can see the character really doing what you’re writing them to do. would they act that way in an actual episode of the anime or volume of the manga? if you’re unsure or the answer is no, try going a different route.

While I'm at it, I'll talk about someone other than Subspace for once.

I've see a lot of drama about a couple of ships on my fyp recently (probably just me, but whatever), and those ships are:

1. Scythestaff

2. Banbox

3. Subgraft

First of all, I'm not even going to comment of Subgraft. I'm perfectly fine with Biobox, it's cute, but Subgraft is disgusting, that's my opinion and I don't want it to be commented on, but I had to say that I do not think that this ship is alright in any way shape or form.

Moving on: Scythestaff and Banbox

SCYTHESTAFF:

1. Uh, idk, I wanna say that idgaf about what you ship, tbh, as long as it's not illegal, this is just my personal thoughts on the ship

2. The main thing I see on this ship is about the age gap, which is a small reason on why I don't like the ship, but it is absolutely not the main reason.

3. The main reason as to why I do not like Scythestaff is that it is... a pretty good example of... being a creep. Scythe, to site directly from the official wiki app, "has remarked directly to Vine Staff about having her horns on her wall."

...

Think about that. Scythe has expressed direct interest in putting Vine Staff's horns on a wall, which is, to put it bluntly, a disgisting and disturbing thing to say to someone. I think that putting them in a relationship is bad because, this seems obvious, in my opinion, but because Vine Staff would not be safe, nor would she feel safe. She clearly doesn't trust Scythe, and, again, siting from the official wiki, "Scythe likes Vine Staff but is disliked in return."

Vine Staff does not like Scythe. In fact, she sees Scythe as a creepy woman (because Scythe is a creepy woman, no matter how much I love her), if I interpret their dialogue correctly.

4. Uh, the age gap adds onto this. The ship, in canon, would already be, like, a 3/10, but the age gap makes it a 1/10, because it makes Scythe even creepier if you see her interest in Vine Staff as romantic. This is a 42 year old woman, flirting with a (scientifically not fully mature, by the way) 23 year old, and the 23 year old is clearly stating her displeasure with such flirtations. I believe thar is called 'catcalling'. Let's be homest here, if Scythe was a man, this would be an incredibly disliked ship (coming from a woman, so no, I'm not being sexist here).

If you need it to be put in a simpler manner:

A much older person is catcalling a much younger person who clearly dislikesit and is expressing that they do not consent to these types of interactions with the older (is the way that I see it. Again, this is all opinions).

Alrighty, those are my veiws on Scythestaff, now time for... the other one.

BANBOX:

1. I personally just don't like this ship. I think in some ways it's better, seeing as Ban Hammer doesn't act creepy with Boombox, but in other ways it's worse, because Boombox is pretty clearly less emotionally mature than Vine Staff.

2. Age gap is actually one of the more major reasons that I don't like this ship, but we will talk about it later.

3. Banbox to me is... odd, because it just feels like Ban Hammer (in canon, your headcanons are valid, but I speak of ships in a relatively canon sense, so, y'know) would just be taking advantage of Boombox on multiple different levels, because not only would Ban Hammer have all the power in such a relationship, and in most relationships, it could still be healthy, even with one partner who could easily control the other, if the one with the power is a decent prson and eould not use this power to do so. But Ban Hammer is the type of person to do just that: exploit that power. I know that people like to make him 'silly buff man', and he is, to some degree, but he is also a fully grown, emotionally aware and intelligent, and very rude person, who uses his power to control others. Or, at least, he tries to. As stated in the magical official wiki: "Ban Hammer is, overall, a cocky and self-assured Phighter who will not hesitate to overstate his abilities and put others down." So uh, there's my proof.

Now here's where all of this 'power' is:

5. Ban Hanmer is much stronger than Boombox. He is over a foot and a half taller than him, and is a literal demigod. In a fight, Boombox would lose.

6. Ban Hammer is much older than Boombox. He has more experience, more information, etc. than Boombox because of this.

7. Ban Hammer is more powerful in the sense of status as well. He is the warden of Banlands, a feared figure, and a demigod. He could easily turn people against Boombox, or prevent Boonbox from getting help from others in the case of an agruement or serious/scary matter.

7. Boombox is a generally innocent character. He has never killed anyone, he tries to make friends with basically every phighter he comes across, and, well, just look at his character. Of course, he's much more than just that, but it is something I would like to point out, as Ban Hammer is... basically the opposite of that. He is rude, aggressive, offstandish, and has killed, seeing as Boombox is the only who hasn't.

Basically, Ban Hammer would have every ounce of power in this relationship and would definitely use this power to control and abuse Boombox, which is... icky.

THAT'S IT!!

Yeah, I don't like these ships.

If you do, go ahead! I'm just saying that in canon, these would never happen, and would be incredibly toxic if they did, to a point where it wouldn't be just 'toxic yaoi/yuri', but it would be openly disrespecting the abusive relationships in real life that people suffer through. However, if you acknowledge that these ships would be bad in canon, then you're fine. To be completely truthful, basically none of the ships are canon.

Honestly, this was just me explaining why I don't like the ships, personally. Headcanons are fine, aus are fine, as a previous anon has stated. Go crazy, just don't get mad when people express that the ship makes them uncomfortable, because, well, that's perfectly reasonable.

Hello Luka! I’m contemplating making a toyhouse and a wondering what the experience? community?? is like over there. The only “art hosting” sites I have previous experience with is DeviantArt and Instagram. I’d like to post my art again, and don’t really want to do it here on tumblr. The organization feature on toyhouse has appeal (being able to organize fan art vs MaDD art is nice!) but I’m not sure if that’s what toyhouse is really for? There seems to be a heavy focus on art/trades and adopts. Is that the predominate activity/expectation on the site? Is it mainly OC centered, or is fandom related content welcomed too?

Trades & Adopts

It's a big feature of the site, for sure. I wouldn't say trading is the expectation, though. I've come across loads of people who just wanna share their OCs, me included. There's even multiple different ways to clarify if your characters are up for trade or not!

RP is another draw I think, there's a lot of forum threads looking for RP partners. So it's not like people are ONLY here to switch around OCs lol. I would not have joined if that was the vibe tbh.

Fandom v. OC

Toyhouse's Rules/TOS actually cover this! Short answer, no, it's just for OCs. Technically. Fan OCs & Canon Inspired OCs are allowed, but even so you gotta be careful with Canon Inspired characters:

We allow canon-inspired characters specifically where it's clear they're an original character who has been inspired by the canon content, rather than AU fanart and fanfic of a canon character. As long as your character has their own name, and a profile/design that reflects they're intended to be individual from the canon character and are not literally the canon character, they should be fine to upload. Adding some background to the character's profile to explain who they are will help a lot to ensure they don't get mixed up.

But like. between u & me. I don't think they look super closely unless someone reports the character. so even if ur SUPER worried about that, there's the option of making the character private.

I will warn you, toyhouse is invite-only, and getting a code to make an account is. unreasonably hard. especially for how long the site has been in "beta" but I digress. the ability to generate codes is only for premium members, otherwise I would've offered the entire madd community one.

OH!!! there's also the coding. it's not required by any means, but you can edit the code of your profile & OC's bio! there's a lot of cool/fancy templates to pick.

I have a lot of fun on there, though. It's like, the closest I've gotten to making a "paracosm wiki" that I'm actually satisfied with.

i've had this idea in my mind for... years at this point, i guess, just swimming around in the back of my mind. and it Hit me again thanks to the show so here we are

i'm not looking for a roleplay partner, which seems to be the "norm" nowadays. my plan: a pjo rp forum site, hosted on jcink or proboards, whatever works. forum roleplaying was a big part of my online experience growing up and god i just MISS it

i have basic ideas, ill put them under the cut

the bulk of the rp would be character building, threads in camp and elsewhere - but i have this main gimmick idea for "quests":

they would be primarily crafted by admin (who have first dibs for playing cabin counselors too), and assigned to players who signed up to be on the quest "waiting list". admin (which would have a shared account so it didnt matter specifically Who) would play the parts of NPCS - including monster encounters. if/when gods showed up, they would also be played by admin

i'd love to implement some sort of ttrpg dice system, with quickfire threads for combat separate but linked to the main thread. monsters would have different stats, etc. and players could even consent to character deaths when signing up for quests!

demigods wouldnt be the only type of character available to make, but it would have to be the majority. satyrs, i think, would be the most numerous "side characters", maybe nymphs around camp. those details arent important rn tho

what i'm thinking:

with admin, i'm looking for people who know how to code and create custom layouts, graphics etc. ideally, 2-3 people so its not all one one person

i'd want the timeline to be vaguely post-pjo - meaning, there are more than the 12 cabins, less unclaimed demigods, etc. but its been a while since ive read the heroes of olympus and i've barely cracked open the first trials of apollo book so idk what Happened to affect the site's timeline/lore. so in my mind, it's just post-last olympian.

also, i wouldn't want to have canon characters - at the most, they'd be NPCs that are rarely used.

i know a big thing is that people have lives, and i have no idea what the forum-rp scene is like because i haven't been involved since.... god(s) idk, around 10 years???

me personally, i have the free time to be willing to overlook the site and get everything written out; admin i would want to be more active, of course, just enough to keep things running

age-wise, it wouldnt feel right to make it a 17+ forum, this is a kid's series after all. i think 13 is the limit for most if not all forums, and i'd be fine with that. player ages shouldn't be broadcasted, we could have some sort of Minor/Adult indicator but idk if even that would be necessary.

and i'd want at least a "proficient" level of writing, whatever the terms were - rp posts wouldnt need to be whole novels, but at least a chunky paragraph that the partner could work off

when did you first start writing?

i think i was 12 when i first started PROPER writing. before then i did some kinda silly stuff here and there, but yeah, i was definitely around 12 yrs old. that was when i got access to a laptop of my own and between playing sims i started exploring roleplaying.

on what platform did you start to write?

it was this american website that got taken over by brazilians called orkut LOL. but i would say most of my writing back then was either done on msn messenger or when i started rping on twitter.

do you tend to focus on shipping or you do not care at all?

yeah i definitely focus heavily on shipping. not that i won't write things that aren't shippy, obviously, but i just like to explore shipping dynamics the most. particularly the toxic and really fucked up ones. like the darker the dynamic the more i'll be into it. i'm very easy to ship. i ship SO many crossover ships. and like idk sometimes all it takes is for me to like two characters to be able to see them together lmao. but obviously the most important thing for me is chemistry with the writer. sometimes it just isn't there. fortunately though that doesn't really happen all that often! but i also don't enjoy shipping with people who aren't flexible. for example, ppl who will only write submissive characters, or people who only write straight characters. it just isn't really appealing or interesting for me and i lose interest very quickly.

what are rare-pairs that you're passionate about?

dude. i can't even get into that LOL. i have way too many to start off. most of the ships i'm REALLY into are rarepairs that no one cares about lol. it just kinda varies on what the flavour of the week is. i'll have a list of those at some point but you're better off asking me in private lmao.

what are things you wish people would tag so you can block it?

PORN. mostly, fucking porn. like oh my god. obviously i don't mind smut or some stuff that's more... soft porn. but there's shit that is like overly graphic and sexual in nature that like... just makes me uncomfortable. i'm fine reading about it and writing it, but seeing the visual without any kinda of warning REALLY makes me just have the massive fucking icks. i just don't like it. never did it. lol i really really pray everyone who likes to reblog those kinda stuff has an unique porn tag that i can blacklist because yeah. it's an issue.

7. What character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because of how the fandom acts about them?

Oh there's a couple. If you saw my Sonic Bitching ask then I'd include Eggman and probably Sage. Since we're mutuals bonded through a love for Mipha, and a disdain for TotK I'll say... I think the easy answer is Zelda, and while I do feel crazy when seeing people say she's an incredibly complex character and her 'story' in TotK was "moving", it isn't enough to make me hate her character. I think. It is tough to say because in a vacuum, the "Miphlink enjoyer liking the Zora with technically less story than the main character princess equals a bias and take their criticism of the main princess with a grain of salt" thought process is strong, but I don't want it to come off that way. Idk, there really isn't any Zelda character I hate that I'm not supposed to, I would more so say I have a stronger disdain for how Zelda was handled in TotK in response to the aggressive praise attributed to a rather sloppy, predictable, and disappointing storyline. Also she had no arc. People who say she did are wrong, to the point TotK undoes the arc and growth done in TotK to "return to the status quo."

8. Common fandom opinion everyone is wrong about.

I REALLY hate the "Fated Lovers" trope some people have applied to Link and Zelda. And it's not just because of Miphlink, either. In my mind, I get some people love that romantic trope of finding your soulmate in every reincarnation, but it never sat right with me for some reasons. It... it feels like it results in all the different incarnations of these characters flattened and simplified, that they lose these individual traits, outcomes, storylines, just to become "fated to be together no matter what". It also just doesn't make sense fully, since by my understanding Zelda isn't a reincarnation, but a descendant. She's the descendant of the Goddess Hylia's reincarnated Hylian form, right? So why would the kid of a kid of a Zelda HAVE to get with some random fucked named Link? She's not a reincarnated soul.

Also. Ganon(dorf). The curse ALSO included Ganon(dorf) as part of the course, so unless your suggesting a romantic angle with a throuple between them (which they won't, it HAS to be the pretty pale people, not the dark skinned man) then I DO NOT understand the romantic tie to the curse. What makes Zelda and Link's dynamic in SS result in them 'bonded for life romantically'? What, because the two had some romantic chemistry? Why would THAT have any impact on the curse? What, did Demise have some fine print that stated the two of them HAD to fuck? That sick fuck...

If it's not the curse angle but instead the idea that "the Goddess has a fondness/love for Link that continues on for generations", then, one that once again flattens all the Link's and Zelda's into one character each, void of their own personality, but two. This basically insinuates that Link and Zelda lose their own individuality and freedom of choice, all by a Goddess and her 'meddling'. It comes off... weird with that angle.

Oh also Twilight Link is a descendant of OoT Link, so if both of them end up together with their respective Zelda's then there's some incest going on in the family. 💀 Sure it's a few generations away, but come on. Be a little self aware.

15. The one thing you see in fanart all the time

So unlike Tumblr, you can't block tags on Instagram. Also, tagging culture is WAY different on that site to get as much engagement as possible. The reason I bring this up is because despite not wishing to see it like at all, I get a good amount of Sidlink art on my feed. Scrolling and click on a Zelda related meme? Three posts in and you got Sidlink. Now, even though I don't wanna see it, I don't care to hate the ship at all. What I ALWAYS see in this fanart that I just don't understand is having Link wear the Zora armor. The one from someone who wished to propose to him. The one dude's sister.

Listen, I get it if Sidlink people go with the angle it was a one sided love. I don't agree, but the game left it up to interpretation. But even then, I put myself in BOTH positions and can't possibly imagine taking my dead siblings engagement gift and 'regifting' it to the person they made it for, nor can I imagine myself wearing that gift that was made by the current person I'm seeing's dead sibling. Just feels weird I guess.

Especially because I saw a full on comic of Sidon going back in time in AoC and when asked by his, reminder, DEAD sister if Link reciprocated her gift, since at this point she already knows she's dead in his timeline, Sidon bluntly exclaims he doesn't know AND he repurposed the Zora armor to gift to Link himself. Idk, that felt really out of character for Sidon, a gross disrespect, and strange. First time I ever out right blocked an artist instead of dismissing it, ngl...

House MD S6 Finale & S07E01

Time for me to have unpopular feelings and opinions about a decade-old show!!!

Even though House has never been a subtle show, the finale to season 6 was really just ham-fisted. I can't believe it got such high ratings. Very senior doctors are called in to help at an active emergency site - sure fine whatever suspending disbelief. The setting and makeup and practical effects and all that were great, but those are some of the most reliably good parts of the whole series.

However, the writing. Nobody seems to remember the part where House was in a major bus crash which nearly killed him and did actually kill his best friend's girlfriend and the depression spiral from that specific event was what precipitated his collapse and move into a mental hospital. Who cares about that, PTSD doesn't exist.

Then somehow as an audience we're also supposed to care about Cuddy suddenly getting married to Lucas.

And there is a patient literally trapped with her leg literally at risk of being chopped off in order to try to save her life. House wants to help her keep her leg for obvious reasons. Cuddy gets mad at him for idk its not really clear - he disagreed with her therefore he's trying to sabotage her marriage. The important thing is that House is going to handle this differently than when he was the one making the decision about amputation for himself because he has Changed.

And also House is trying to explain the crane operator falling asleep so that he stops blaming the accident on himself - he didn't hurt all those people, it was his medical condition. Once again really just drawing huge arrows in crayon at the message they're trying to send.

They couldn't just pick one of those ideas? Like yeah, we get it, House has feelings about his leg, Cuddy still has feelings about House, House feels bad about hurting people and wants to be better. None of this is revealing new information. It's all just crammed in there.

The trapped woman dies and House explodes because he keeps trying to do the right thing and it never works out for him - the only genuine feeling in the whole episode. So he's on the floor of his old bathroom with the Vicodin again. And Cuddy appears. Just like the hallucination. But oh no she has dumped Lucas for House~ how dramatic~. Then also btw Thirteen is quitting.

What??

It's not as bad as House/Cameron was! House/Cuddy works fine on the level of flirting and maybe an old crush, but as it became escalated to "I've been in love with you for 20 years" - barf. Feels very much like they Needed to have a House romance plot twist for the finale and they can't possibly come up with a new love interest (or make Wilson canon) so Cuddy it is. The more Dramatic Events per episode the better, right?

And then watching the first episode of the new season, the writers were in a real hurry to show that this relationship can *totally* work you guys like this was always supposed to be endgame. The characters are talking to each other on such a superficial level that I would expect from like... a 15 year old's first fanfiction. I know this show is bad. I know it. Somehow this just really irritated me. Send help, I'm actually thinking about looking up fandom reactions from back then to see if I'm totally off base here.

As I get closer and closer to actually being able to post my WIP on AO3 I have to figure out the hardest part of fic writing... the tags 😓 idk if it's just me but I've always struggled to figure out proper tagging etiquette on that site. Maybe y'all can help me?

I think I've decided to rate it 'Mature' mainly for the frequent suicidal ideation/attempts (though I honestly think a level-minded teen could handle that topic just fine). That will definitely make it into the main tags too, it's a whole character arc and themetically relevant part of the story that is nevertheless dark and good to warn readers of.

Where I tend to get stuck is the smaller instances of potentially triggering things. For example, Aston hits his son once (1) in chapter 3, then that never happens again for the remaining 25 chapters. Should I still add "domestic child abuse" to the main tags, or is it enough to put a warning in the author's notes of the relevant chapter (with specfics on where it begins and ends in the paragraphs, like how some YouTubers mention timestamps in their videos so viewers can skip certain topics)?

I personally would prefer the latter so I can avoid just the upsetting part and enjoy the rest of the story. To use myself as an example, I am easily squicked by vomiting. If I see a fic tagged with vomiting I will most likely not read it because I assume if they tagged it it must be relevant enough to be noted, but I actually can handle it being mentioned once as long as there aren't any graphic details. In fact I can think of a specific fic I enjoyed that did NOT tag for vomiting and only mentioned it briefly so all I did was wince a little and move on. If it had been in the main tags, I never would have read it.

I guess my confusion boils down to whether the tags of a fic are meant to convey EVERYTHING in a fic or just the most relevant aspects. I've heard tagging compared to a nutritional label before, but unlike those I feel like AO3's current system just doesn't allow you to convey the ratio of its contents well; to me, a 500 word fic that mentions a squick is worse than a 50,000 word fic where that same squick can be easily drowned out by other non-triggering events. I'm just worried that tagging my fic with "child abuse" will make it sound like it's ABOUT child abuse when that's only a very small part of it, like calling a cupcake salty just for containing salt. But I suppose for someone allergic to salt it might be better to be told that immediately, instead of in a missable author's note.

And this isn't even getting into some of my other confusions around AO3, like knowing the exact popular phrase to describe a trope--- I recently posted a fic in which the type of love the protagonist is feeling is left to interpretation, with room for platonic or romantic readings. I'm certain there's a term for that in fan fic (I definitely toggled the "other" button under relationships), but my inputted tag "ambiguous love" didn't seem to be a thing, only "ambiguous relationship" which is NOT what I had in mind--- the relationship dynamic is established (at least to the characters), it's just the internal feelings of one character that are loosely defined on purpose. But I suppose this one's up to the tag wranglers, though I wonder sometimes how accurately they can assign intended meanings to the tags without reading the fics for context.

And I have plenty of other questions too, most but not all relating to my particular fic: Does a chapter set partially inside the Rockgagong count as vore? (it's a little more graphic than canon but that's a very low bar and I'd hardly say it's intentional). Is it okay to tag things that haven't happened yet in the chapters I will be posting first, or will that confuse readers who are expecting those tropes to appear already because they have been tagged? (I'm worried I'll forget to update the tags once the relevant chapters are posted). If a relevant trope would be considering a spoiler is it okay to not tag it at all? (my instinct would be to still tag it, especially if it's something potentially triggering, but I also personally would rather not know so I could maintain my emersion instead of waiting for the thing to happen). Feel free to weigh in on this, friends, as you can see I'm generally clueless and prone to overthinking 😅
