Well my opinion is that I can understand it completely if people choose to do so, but personally I have no desire to leave nor intention of leaving. I understand that it might bother individual people but I'm not asking anyone to look at this blog; in fact the reason I started to use this sideblog is so I could keep everything HP-related away from people who choose not to see it. While I think HP's cultural relevance today is such that it's impossible to avoid entirely, I do empathise with people who'd rather not see it. If someone wished to block me for continuing to blog about HP, I think that might be the healthiest option for everyone involved.

Anyway, I understand why this is happening and I think it's important to discuss. But that's the point. It's important to discuss, not stick our fingers in our ears.

I think this is a great post about it! Here are my own (long-winded) thoughts:

Personally I fundamentally disagree with the idea that we should stop reading and discussing works written by bad people. I don't believe that's a constructive or healthy way to engage with literature. If nobody's left to discuss something as culturally relevant as HP (or LotR, or whatever) critically, then what is the point of literature in the first place? Is it pure entertainment and therefore easily discarded? Ftr I'm also firmly against banning (even socially 'banning') literature of ANY sort, for ANY reason. "You shouldn't read X because it's morally wrong" is to me ultimately a conservative belief.

Anyway: I find it pretty obvious that JKR said 'if you like my books you agree with me' PURPOSEFULLY to cause this kind of a reaction, because she knew it would cause her detractors to become hyperfocused on pointing fingers at each other and thought policing each other over a kids book rather than focusing on what's actually going on. I don't think we should be playing into it, and I don't think even JKR believes it herself-- I think it was deliberate. And tbh from what I can see it has had the exact effect she intended.

The other thing I'll say is that (and tbf I can't say for sure) but I suspect that the online HP fandom might be exaggerating its own importance a little bit. Tbh I think that even if the online (and more liberal) fandom disappeared overnight there would still be tens of thousands of kids (the target audience, after all) discovering and reading Harry Potter for themselves across the globe. Scores of parents and aunts and grandparents who know nothing about JKR buying those books for the kids in their family. And that's not counting the people who actually do agree with JKR. Yes fandom disappearing might have some small impact, but tbh I think it would be all but insignificant. It would be much more, like infinitely more, materially significant for people in fandom to donate time and/or money to trans organisations in their own countries. ((I also think what would be somewhat helpful is for fandom to take responsibility in encouraging people not to watch the HBO series. The success of the series is imo more contingent on online opinion than the books.))

There are also millions of people still using twitter, instagram, and amazon, despite the very real material damage caused by Musk, Zuckerberg, and Bezos, and that's a MUCH more direct cause-and-effect than simply talking about Harry Potter because using those platforms LITERALLY lines the pockets of those individuals. I will say that if you're on twitter telling people they should stop talking about Harry Potter I simply will not take you seriously loll 😂

I guess there is probably some amount of people who discovered HP through, idk, Marauders tiktok and decided to read the series, but how significant is this number? It's incredibly difficult to grow up in most countries around the world and not come across Harry Potter in some way. For good or ill I do think HP is en route to becoming a children's classic. If tumblr goes down and my blog and all the blogs I interact with on here disappear, I don't think this would change.

On the other hand, simply for posterity I do think there's some value in continuing to discuss it-- all of it, including the reality of who the author is, the cultural relevance of HP, the text itself and what this all means given its significance in our culture. And it's important to discuss it critically, honestly, and constructively. It's remarkably easy with HP to avoid giving money to the author, which is something I believe to be worthwhile, so tbh I can't bring myself to agree with 'it would be better if we stopped talking about it' in a general sense. Personally I don't think the only people left discussing it should be right wing maniacs lol-- again, for posterity if nothing else.

Also I think there's a slightly worrying tendency on the liberal 'left' (which is typically the majority in most fandom spaces) to shut down conversation and discussion in general, particularly if those conversations are uncomfortable. You see thought-terminating clichés frequently deployed in such spaces and I think it's just not helpful. Seeing posts from supposed leftists trying to convince people that it's morally wrong to even THINK about Harry Potter is pretty wild to me, tbh. I think that for a while now there's been much more of a focus among the left on idealism over materialism, to the point where material reality is totally ignored in favour of, essentially, trying to get everyone to think the correct thoughts. To me this just isn't a productive or intellectually responsible approach.

What is the material benefit of all of us simply shutting up about Harry Potter forever? How does this actually help anyone beyond yourself and your own conscience? To me it seems like ultimately a performative and virtue signalling action that is pretty meaningless when you're not doing anything else, and is particularly meaningless when you're not applying this to literally anything else in your life. Fandom isn't activism, but by extension NOT-fandom also isn't activism haha. Personally I dislike Marvel films and think they're barely-disguised propaganda for the American military-industrial complex, but I don't think it's evil for people to write their Bucky/Steve fanfiction or whatever lmao. And I certainly don't think it's wrong to discuss Marvel films, the opposite in fact, I think they should be critically discussed.

So, basically, I think it's perfectly understandable that people would want to leave the fandom. But ultimately I think that's an action you're taking for yourself, and I don't think there's much to be gained from refusing to discuss things deemed 'morally wrong.' I think to a certain extent it's natural and probably healthy to feel some guilt about it all, but also perhaps it's worth questioning why we feel such extreme guilt about this, which is really just people talking to each other about books, and not about the 486948736 other much more unambiguously destructive things we do with our time and money on a daily basis.

As long as we're willing to discuss this topic honestly and constructively, to be conscious and empathetic towards others, and to refrain from spending any money on HP-related products, I don't think it's wrong to remain in the fandom tbh. To deny HP's impact on today's literary landscape would be, imo, dishonest, so therefore somebody has to discuss it. And I'd much rather there be a variety of opinions within that discussion.

re: that post about hypothetical 'dislike' buttons on fics and mean/critical reviews, I started writing fic in the early 00's when the general etiquette of 'reviewing' was that everyone was entitled to be as openly critical of fanfics as they liked bc the writer 'deserved' it for writing something like a female self-insert OC ('Mary Sue', any female OC was synonymous with that for awhile, and for some haters out there that's still the case) and/or struggling with grammar/spelling whathaveyou and 'It's out for public consumption so writers just need to get a thick skin and deal with it' and/or 'Critical feedback is important to improve a writer's skill1!!! I'm doing them a favor!!1!!'. I'm glad we've come around to an era of fandom where it seems most people generally accept that unsolicited critical reviews ('flames' as we called them back then) are rude and the people who still leave them are shunned/corrected accordingly.

Bc like yeah, I'm not going to dispute that constructive criticism CAN be helpful, but I think an important part of it actually being helpful is 1) the writer's consent/interest in receiving it in the first place -bc we're talking about FANFIC not a professionally published work- and 2) the person offering the concrit understanding and respecting what the writer's goals are and having points to offer that are actually useful to that end. Like, if someone has set out to write a self-indulgent self-insert OC romance story, telling them that OCs, OC x canon is trash and they should consider writing a entirely different story than the one they're working on isn't constructive or helpful in any way, it's just one person trying to enforce their own fic preferences on an unwilling participant when they could just as easily avoid the tropes they don't want to see in the first place. That kind of 'criticism' isn't so much helpful feedback as it is an attempt to gatekeep what kind of fanfic should be written at all based on specific personal standards, it doesn't allow for the reality that different people are looking for different things in stories and they should be allowed to write/read what they want to. It doesn't allow for the reality that not everything is intended for everyone. It absolutely stifles creativity and diversity within fandom/fanfic communities.

Not to mention it's just, imo, very arrogant? To like, deputize oneself as the highest authority and greatest mind on writing in the world and feel like one's negative input is some kind of god's gift to the writer and they should be grateful to receive these 'pearls of wisdom' they didn't even ask for in the first place?? Like, who the fuck are you lol??? If I'm writing a self insert mary sue OC x canon and my entire goal in doing that is to be self-indulgent and have fun, you're not exactly helping anything by telling me I shouldn't be writing that at all just bc you think it's cringe. That's not concrit, that's just being an entitled ass over how someone else plays with their toys, like let's be so fr here!!! JUST READ SOMETHING ELSE!!! Or better yet get to your keyboard and write the story YOU want to read instead of dragging other people down!!!

And the hypothetical notion that we should have 'dislike' or downvote buttons on fics makes me want hurl something through a window tbh, like that wouldn't ever be abused by trolls and/or just kill most people's drive to put their work out at all /s

idk I just feel like actual, helpful constructive criticism comes from those who understand and appreciate the genre they're commenting on (and even better if they've written within it themselves). You get it 😭 Like, naturally the focus will be on their new songs, but from what I've understood, the Nokia Arena show will also be a sort of celebration of their 10-year anniversary, so I'm totally gonna expect it to be at least a little more special also in terms of the songs they play, even though I know it might be in vain 😔

I have sooooooo many opinions of their setlists anyway, gonna put them under a read-more in case someone's not up for seeing (minor) criticism lol (not even that tbh, just some constructive feedback / ideas, as if I know anything about how the music business works and how setlist for rock shows/tours are built)

I feel like they've for the past 2 years been playing pretty much the same setlist at shows, which is a huge shame imo because they have sooooooo many great songs in the catalogue, which would allow more frequent rotation in setlist. Obviously I understand they can't make a new setlist for every show, and that's not what I mean to say anyway, but it would be nice to hear different songs from time to time, you know? Sure, some songs get dropped when brand new ones are taken in, but I think the "base" setlist has stayed pretty much intact for two years now. I do understand why they keep such songs as Over My Dead Body and Died Enough For You in their setlists, because hey, they are fan favourites and solid live songs, and also in a way "prototype examples" of Violent Pop, right?

This is why I think they should, instead of using pretty much the same exact setlist for their shows both in Europe/Finland as well as in the US, they could very easily, with the fanbase they already have in Europe, include more older/unknown/non-single songs in their own headline shows, vs. the supporting act slots they play in the States (or at random heavy metal festivals in Europe) to audiences of which only a few have ever even heard of them, in which they could focus on new-ish singles as well as these "prototype Violen Pop" ones such as OMDB and DEFY. Because there's definitely a difference in between playing a show in front of an audience who only just heard about the band five seconds ago (to put it bluntly lol) vs. playing a show in front of an audience who knows the lyrics to ALL their songs, not just the few singles they've maybe heard on the radio/tv. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here lol, I don't mean to assume y'all haven't already thought about this yourselves, I'm just writing down my own thoughts 😅

That being said, of course I don't know what it takes to rotate multiple different setlists instead of using just one setlist tour after tour 🤔 I don't know how much they have to practice their setlists before the go on tour? Naively I assume they know how to play their own songs (not counting the brand new ones they've never played live 😅). In any case, the reason I was low-key disappointed with the ice hall show was very much because of the setlist, which was the exact same as at the cruise the day before and at Pakkahuone the day after. Pakkahuone, in my opinion, was "just" a regular club show, i.e. not a special one like one expects a goddamn ice hall one to be, so the ice hall one didn't really feel as special as it could've been. Sure, the visual effects were cool and Robin was there which was definitely not expected lol, but in therms of the songs they played it was more or less like any other BC show. But idk, I wonder if the hassle with the bankruptcy of their booking agency maybe had some effect on how the show turned out? 🤷‍♀️

The Nokia Arena show is said to last for about 1½ hours. Now, if their headline shows on the spring tour last about 60 minutes, I really hope that the extra half an hour at the Nokia Arena show will not be filled with just some more light shows, pyros and other visual effects, but instead with actual music! I'm not expecting them to play some of their reaaaaaaaally old songs like Naysayers or whatever (unpopular opinion: not a huge fan of their super older stuff lol sorry), but even some less-played songs from Violent Pop? One of their recent setlist decisions I really can't understand is that Timebomb was dropped to give room to newer songs, because not only in my own humble opinion but also objectively speaking I think that song is one of their best ever. It's such a fucking masterpiece and definitely among the top 5 best songs they've ever made. Obviously any artist/band is in love with their newest songs and thinks that every new song they drop is the "best song we've ever made!!" but honestly I doubt that the 12 songs on Exit Emotions are going to be the best 12 songs they've ever written 😶 (because, again, in my extremely subjective opinion, all of the singles from LOTSAD alone have been better than any single from the new album, excluding maybe Die Another Day. not saying I hate the new songs, but none of them are going to my personal top 10 of BC songs. but yeah, obviously BC's not making music with my personal preferences in mind lol, just stating my opinion again 😂 I have more opinions on their new music, but that's another post entirely)

Still, I'm excited for the Nokia Arena show and I'm sure it'll be fun 🥺 the Irish pub we went to after the Pakkahuone show is right next to it btw, so maybe that's our afterparty location settled, eh? 🥰

i want to talk about it or rather just post the actual post of my scrapped ideas (i have a lot of kamen rider ideas that one or two ideas SOMEHOW in my dream, its was very angsty) but fair warning : it's a lot of angst, rollercoaster of drama, somewhat time shenanigans (dw Shinnosuke, you arent in it) , somewhat rewrote Oma-Zi-O character cause i want his character act more idk what i want aka make a villain character more complicated that it should be in a good way like he already do bad shit but it's make the readers.. bad or mixed feelings about him cause i like some sick twist in villain mc personality.. it's not too easy to explain tbh lol, and also.. because i am Angst enjoyer, i like to.. made Sougo suffer (look, my first comfort character is Sougo then second is Tsukasa, ofc i am gonna made the king of time suffer and look my profile has my ceo title called CEO of Hurt No Comfort cause most of my bookmarks has that tag), it's kinda inspired by your kamen rider verse like the found family of main riders but not whole thing (i just like the idea of main riders found family ever since i watch Ghost/Ex-Aid movie) and also dw, it's has Comfort like in the end, it's just Sougo suffering in somewhat time travel/time loop where he need clean the new villain shit that trying to change the past without telling or give hint to younger main riders even younger self (also he kinda emo/j cause he need to do this alone or rather get the consequences cause the last loop that he tell that he has this time loop duty made him lost Geiz and Tsukuyomi)

Honestly it still baffles me that people send me their ideas/hcs/what-have-you, instead of posting them on their own blogs. I'm never sure what the intention is with sending it to me of all people. I don't think I have that wide of an audience that sharing them here would be more effective than just posting it themselves.

Of course if you want me to offer thoughts about the hcs, then I can do that. I hope I can offer some constructive criticism, but then again, it's your hc. and s-class… i definitely see what you mean. i think when i first heard it i was like WHOA what’s going onnnnnn cause it was just very very interesting for them to switch genres like that. and i had a theory about it too but i also didn’t bother looking into it bc i got lazy AHHAHAHAHAH but yeah it’s such a great song

and honestly i didn’t really pay too much attention to FNF at first. and then i did and i was like…. amazed. cause i didn’t know they were singing about the nature lost during the fire in australia! i– like that really shocked me. i didn’t mention it when i first wrote my song impressions bc i was so focused on *cough* criticising certain songwriting *cough* 👀😂 but really when i realised i was completely floored. not just by the song but also by the fact that they made that song? like… chris and felix… man, it’s rare for people to love their home country this much, yknow? to write a song for it. they definitely didn’t have to. but they did, out of love. and i just… idk colour me impressed and touched, i suppose.

I really liked your writings when you were SugaSmut and Deerguk but now I have the feeling that you try to pull off this "I am an author" concept. You use words that half of your audience can't comprehend. It sounds nice, no question, but it doesn't contribute to the story imo. I am sorry if this came across harsh but your stories fit rather novels than fanfictions

Well, okay. While I am flattered that you think my stories better fit novels, the whole “you try to pull off this ‘I am an author’ concept” sounds like you are making it out that I am trying too hard. For one, I recently started studying a Creative/Professional Writing and Publishing course at university, and my number one goal is to publish a novel, if not multiple in the future. So yes, I do want to be an author. But it is definitely not a “concept” that I am trying to “pull off” at all. It is something that I am slowly working towards with a shit-load of practice and learning.

Besides, if there is one thing that is greatly promoted in all of my writing-based classes, it is that you do not spew a thesaurus into your story to make it sound “nice”. I choose those words (which rarely appear as it is) because I want them there, and because they are the words that come to my mind while I am writing. Not to make the story sound “nice” or because I am so desperately wishing to come across as a “real” writer. Flowery and extravagant words do not make for good writing, and they certainly do not define someone as a genuine author.

Second of all, the only stories that I look at that extensively use words that my “audience cannot comprehend” are Do You Feel It, Sugar? which was done as a one-off stylistic choice, and A Ticket to the Sun, which was initially posted on deerguk, and I have not updated since I was using that blog. I honestly perceive all of my currently posted stories to be on the style level of deerguk, except more refined with sentence length, plot development, character development, etc. But in my personal opinion, the majority of fic writers that I know have a very similar vocabulary breadth to me, which they utilise in their own fics. And that is not me trying to direct the finger at anyone else, I am just highlighting the fact that practically everyone in this community writes this way, and I am not doing it to stand out, nor to fit myself into this “I am an author” concept that you are proposing. 

Thank you for the constructive criticism (if it can be called that), but I am only writing and posting on here as a hobby, and to work on my writing style. I apologise if my expansion in vocabulary over the past two and a half years, and improvement in writing style from bland, plotless smuts with generic flows and uninteresting structures has made my fics… sound less like fics?

Alright so yesterday I finished Fate: The Winx Saga and here are all my thoughts.

Disclaimer: These are just my opinions, so it's okay if you don't agree w me.

First off, STELLATRIX.

Can't get them off my mind and I'm a 100% sure Beatrix is gonna come back so it's fine. I absolutely love their dynamic and honestly, I've spent all the eps just waiting for their scenes and I am not ashamed of it. Btw, Stella should've been a lesbian, but it's fine. As long as she's sapphic I don't really care.

Also, I'm pretty sure theyre gonna be canon. Like, all their relationship is so queercoded, with parallels w other ships and everything??? No way they're just gal pals. I refuse. So yeah, in other words, I am clowning hard, which is not surprising cause all I ever do in life is clown over sapphic non-canon ships apparently. (I have a long history abt that)

Musa

Musa, girl, what have they done to you? I didn't hate the haircut as much as I thought I would (even tho its not great) but the clothes???? Hello????? It was hard to watch.

Also, I was kind of surprised w the fact that I liked her "transition" from mind fairy to Specialist, so I'm pretty pleased with her storyline. I will say this: I wish she were sapphic. Not bc of anything specific, but I do remember having a moment where I shipped her w Stella, cause I made a whole fanfic in my head abt them, so yeah.

Also, riven and musa????? Look, I don't normally like m/f ships (specially if they're not in a sitcom). Like, I don't hate them, but they don't give me the buzz, yk. Most times I'm just neutral about them, but I gotta say, man, that Riven and Musa... God, I loved their scenes. I found their dynamic so interesting and the chemistry. THE CHEMISTRY. The slowburn is gonna burn so good.

Terra + Flora

V happy with the fact that Terra is a lesbian cause we need more lgbtq+ people in this show (and in life in general). I will say her storyline w the specialist girl is a bit odd cause they don't really focus much on her (which they obvs should've done that) and isn't she dating someone else when they have their first kiss???? A bit confused abt that.

Other than that, I liked her storyline, and even tho her coming out isn't the best one Ive ever seen, I was pretty pleased. Especially the moment where she tells the whole group and she wants to dismiss it w the rug or smth (I forgot lol) and Stella comes in and hugs her???? Melts my heart.

Moving on, I didn't know how I was gonna feel abt Flora?? And I still don't know lol. I will say that the actress did a good job, but I think they should've added more bonding scenes between Flora and the other girls cause it just didn't feel like they were best friends just like the rest of the group? But maybe it's just me. Still, I don't know how I feel about Flora yet. Like, Im pretty sure I like her, but I think it's more about what she represents, (which is the cartoon character) than what she actually is. I definitely need to see more of her.

Also, the relationship w Terra,, it made sense but also it was too predictable. Like, its not bad but I did find it a tad basic and I wish they made it a bit differently. Like, I know it's hard to innovate but idk, maybe add a little something that makes them stand out? But again, maybe that's just me.

Aisha

Idk what to say abt her tbh, I just like her lol. I will say that it didn't make a lot of sense the way she reacted when she first met Grey (I think that's his name but in case its not, I'm talking abt the guy lol). Like, bro, the lake is not yours, chill. So it was a bit hard for me to get into the relationship but eventually I kinda did, so yeah. V sad that the first boyfriend she has, turns out to be a blood witch. The bestie cannot catch a break lol.

I will say that, (a bit of constructive criticism here) I find Aisha as a character a bit flat. And not only her, I think that in general all the characters except maybe Beatrix and even Riven(?) seem pretty shallow to me. Or maybe like, not shallow but as if they haven't still found their own spark? Idk if this makes sense but I feel like most characters fall into these cliches and tropes, which is totally fine, cause nowadays literally everyone needs to fall into one of these, like it's literally unavoidable. But baby, you need to add a bit of their own spark to make them stand out. To make them memorable, yk? So yeah, I wish they stopped and tried to work on the characters a bit more. Like, Stella, Musa and even Terra are not as bad (even tho imo they a bit of work from the writers wouldn't hurt cause Im pretty sure the actresses make more than half of the work in this aspect) but Aisha, Flora, Sky and especially Bloom... It's bad yall. It's very bad (Will explain the Bloom thing later, don't hate me just yet)

BTW: I say all of this out of all the love in my heart, cause I believe in all the characters and I see the potential, and what they could become. And I hate the fact that I can see it and they're just wasting it so yeah. Don't hate me besties <333

Bloom + Sky

I'm sorry but Bloom is the most basic female main character from a sci-fi tv show you can ever have. Like, bro, just put a little more effort into creating her, please. Like, I'm begging. Maybe it's just me, but the bestie is missing personality (not dragging the actress, just the writers and how they did it), cause yeah, its fine if she wants to sacrifice herself all the time, or if she wants to do everything alone cause she's special n stuff but it's like her whole personality is revolving around her having the Dragon Flame. Which yeah, it is important and it is a v important part of her life but dude. Dont make her one-dimensional.

This also happens w Sky btw. And ofc when you put a bland character w another bland character everything gets... well. Not great. But I won't get into their relationship bc honestly, I do not care. Like I said before, m/f relationships don't give me the buzz so yeah.

To wrap it up...

I did like the second season. I would like to say I liked it more than the first one but I barely remember anything of it, so yeah, lol (Im a horrible fan, I know). I will say that idk what it is, that's making me continue the show, cause I normally only consume sapphic/lgbt media, but here we are. And I did want to leave it a few times cause the heavy straight content is so strong, but Im glad I continued it. And I hope they get renewed for a third season cause I really believe that it has potential and yeah, that's all for now ig. Maybe I'll do another post talking abt other stuff, like plotwise or smth. We'll see. But it'll def be shorter than this cause holy shit, this is long for a person who "isn't v into the show anyways" (that's me lying to myself btw lol)
