I’m a little behind on the airing of the finale of The End of the World, With You, but wanted to jot some quick thoughts down:

I wasn’t as keen on this series as I think the rest of the fandom was. I thought the storytelling didn’t quite gel at least from a.... how do I put it, a consistency-in-humanity perspective, if that makes sense. 

Ritsu was always set up to be a selfish guy, it was clearly identified from the start. If the series was partly focused on his journey of redemption, I’m not sure that most of the moments in the series that were meant to depict those realizations of guilt and sadness were quite convincing, including his realizations that he loved Masumi. Maybe it was just the acting? I’m not sure. (Although apart from the redemption narrative, I LOVED Nakata Keisuke’s acting as Ritsu -- I though he played cold-hearted really well.)

The only time, besides the gorgeous ending, that I thought that Ritsu connected in a wholly emotional way with Masumi, to look at Masumi with love and appreciation, was the river-bathing scene in episode 7, which I thought was GORGEOUSLY done, and totally successful in communicating the changes that had happened in both Masumi and Ritsu to reconnect happily. That scene may have been successful BECAUSE of the lack of dialogue, where the two guys were allowed to just move between each other and express their desire and happiness that way.

These kinds of things would usually be minor quibbles for me, but because Ritsu’s healing/redemption storyline was designed, I think, to partly take us into the finale, I just didn’t buy it. To find out at the end of the series that he was depressed because of his debt (as opposed to only his unrequited love for Masumi) -- that wasn’t surprising to me in the least. I feel like the word “selfish” is judgmental in that moment, but still -- it was indicative that there were parts of Ritsu that weren’t going to change, even with the damn meteorite coming thru. 

With that storyline, and some slight overacting throughout the series (including Masumi post-breakup in episode 7), I was kind of taken out of the series.

But. THAT BEING SAID. This series DID HAVE GREAT THINGS.

Idegami Baku as Meguru, omg! What a GEM, a GEM. I can’t wait to see them in other series. Meguru’s chemistry and connection with Yuma, especially in the last episode, totally moved me. 

And Yuma’s innocence, and his magic. I really wondered where the fuck his character was going earlier in the series (and come awn, those crazy-ass effects at the end lolomg), but I felt totally emotionally connected to him as he was walking away from the two guys. Youth. Youth!

I think this was an inconsistent series, but one that I’d ultimately recommend as a must for the Miki Koichiro oeuvre. He knows. how. to direct. and film. scenes of intimacy. Seriously. Nakata and Seto were up to the challenge, but that was a HELL of a scene at the end, and those two were PERFECT in it. I think I’d recommend watching this series to GET to that excellent finale -- yet another finale in the Miki oeuvre that landed utterly perfectly.

Ritsu's Redemption Arc

This Japanese BL isn't for everyone I'm sure. We all have those BL's we just don't connect with for whatever reason (no judgment from me)

In Episode 7 we see Ritsu isn't the heartless SOB we thought. Yes, he ruthlessly crushed Masumi's heart leaving him completely broken (let's face it the only people that can do that are one's we care for in most situations)

We see that Ritsu with a female friend saying he actually did love Masumi, he even tried contacting Masumi through social media (via a friend of Masumi & Ritsu) who told him what Masumi suffered as a result of Ritsu.

Plus Ritsu delivered a heartfelt apology and Masumi reveals basically he still loves Ritsu.

In addition I have to give it to the series for inclusion. In (GIF 6) is a technical male but is gender non confirming. Their name is IDEGAMI BAKU playing a dual role of sorts as a female character that died (seen in flashbacks) and as that female's characters brother who is an exact replica of their dead sister.

And they are amazing in that role. Both roles.
