Some of my Asterix (and Hubert Brussel Sprouts) drawings through the years. The first one had a list of my friends behind (yep, that’s sad), I used both Asterix and Ompa-pah examples for an study of colors in comic that I made at university. I did a greyscale version of The Great Crossing cover for class too. And lastly, a sketch trying to mix my style with Uderzo’s.

PS: Fun fact: Hubert’s name in Spanish is Humberto de la Pasta de Hojaldre.

Cómic ganador del concurso “Unidos por el Talento” organizado por la Embajada de Francia en Venezuela. Segundo lugar.

El cómic es una re-interpretación de Astérix, el famoso cómic francés. La idea era que Astérix y sus amigos visitaran la Venezuela del pasado y del presente.

The comic is a re-interpretation of Asterix, the famous French comic. The idea was that Asterix and his friends visit Venezuela for the first time.

Asterix was a really important part of my childhood. I clearly remember that tall bookcase full of comics that was near my bedroom. One of the collections was yellow (Tintin) and the other ones were white (Asterix and Lucky Luke). The Asterix comics were easier to read for my six or seven year old self and I went through the collection several times over the years. I found it to be funny and colorful. I loved the characters (I still do, of course) and they made me love the Celtic, Egyptian and Viking cultures. I’ve never stopped reading comics and my love of Ancient History is now the basis of my fantasy books. And an Asterix puzzle has been decorating my bedroom since forever.

Goscinny taught me how a good story and a good joke work. Uderzo taught me not to be hard with my drawing style. You can see how his drawing style evolved through the comics and how adaptative he could be (with a similar style in Ompa-pah, which I heartly recommend). Also, I’ve been drawing braids the same way as him since I was a child. 

Thanks for everything, Uderzo. 

Hope you can finally reunite with your best friend.
