as to how much time it took ive been writing since i was like.. six. and im twenty now. so ig fourteen years skull emoji.. but in general i think i focus less now on trying to sound like... super smart? if that makes sense? sometimes i think what makes things sound kinda corny is when youre describing stuff that you dont actually know.. so i try to just focus on stuff that i do know!! like for example with similes and stuff i just draw from stuff that i see in my own life.. common things.. and the hope is that it comes across as familiar and people reading that go oh i know what that feels like. yk? instead of trying to like.. idk be the next shakespeare and be super poetic and delve into topics that are maybe beyond me or just not really suited to my style of writing. no shade to people who do that!! thats just what worked for me in terms of developing my style :) for dialogue as well i'll sometimes say it out loud to see if it sounds like smth a real person would say outloud bc sometimes... its not... and i rewrite it until im not like. cringing as i say it LMFOA but also mind u i think there will sometimes always be a certain level of corn bc we are writing fic. like it is inherently corny asf. but once you get over that you can have a lot more fun with it :D

Some Azula-centric headcanons that I also use in my ATLA fanfiction:

- Azula’s favorite food is mochi and she actually has a really big sweet tooth. We see her eating some in a flashback in the comic: “Smoke and Shadow.” And therefor it is now officially her favorite, you can’t argue this with me.

- Azula is surprisingly good with children. It doesn’t look like it at first, but there is just something about her that makes little kids gravitate towards her. (I mean, 10 year me also thought she was super cool. You can’t tell me some firebending kids wouldn’t look up to her and her blue fire)

- Azula doesn’t like animals. She doesn’t care for them whatsoever and gets annoyed whenever they, much like the children, gravitate towards her for some reason. She’s the type of person who is the only one in the room to dislike cats, and then have the cat crawl onto her lap specifically.

- Fire healing is a thing, as we learn in The Legend of Korra. But I headcanon that it’s a lost art within the current culture of the Fire Nation. And I think it would be neat for Azula to learn this skill, together with her realizing that firebending doesn’t have to revolve around distruction. And it’s gonna be funny to see other people’s reactions when they learn Azula knows how to heal now. (I know it’s a cliche for a redemption arc, but idc. It’s fun)

- Azula developed a fear of drowning after Katara defeated her. She’s not afraid of water or anything, but she starts to feel panicked whenever she’s fully submerged.

- Azula is actually very spiritual. She just doesn’t discover this about herself until much later, because spiritually was never taken seriously or encouraged by her father. But once she gets better at it, it enhances her abilities in multiple ways.

- Azula learned to talk from a relatively young age. She was already capable of forming full sentences (ofc using simple words, but still) by the time she was two and a half.

- She also discovered her firebending quicker than most children. Usually it’s discovered around the age of five or six, but Azula sparked her first flame when she was three years old. (Idk if this is accurate to canon tbh)

- Azula has really neat handwriting, but she’s not good at drawing.

- Hair is canonically a very important symbol in Fire Nation culture. Letting someone touch your hair is a big deal there. As children, Azula sometimes let Ty Lee play with and braid her hair.

- I know that in canon, Azula figures out how to use lightning redirection (this happens in the comics.) I do something different in my fanfic though. Azula won’t learn lightning redirection, but she invents a new technique herself. She basically learns that it’s possible to maintain a constant charge of lightning if you let it circuit through the body. This means that she will only have to do her wind up once and is then able to bend lightning continuously for some time after. (This was my idea to keep the requirement of her needing a charge up time to generate lightning (unlike her father who can do it almost instantly) but to also buff her lightning bending skills.) This technique is incredibly dangerous and difficult to pull off though, since it requires the lightning to pass through the heart. You must maintain a steady heartbeat and control at all times, or risk it doing fatal damage. So to counterbalance its overpoweredness, it’s got that downside. (I know Iroh says in the show not to let lightning pass through the heart. But he also said you cannot bend lightning while you’re emotionally unstable. And Azula was anything but emotionally stable during the Agni Kai, and she could still bend lightning. I’m not saying Uncle Iroh is wrong, but that his logical applies mainly to lightning bending in general. Azula is just built different and finds a way to do it anyway)

- I headcanon that Azula as a closeted lesbian. This doesn’t really play a part in my fanfiction, since she’s not shipped with anyone in it and there’s no real romance. But I do hint at it every now and then, just for funsies.

- Hence, Azula sucks at flirting with all genders.

- (This is more an Ursa headcanon than Azula, but whatvs) Ursa used to check up on her children every night when they went to bed. This is a habit she built up because she’s constantly worried about their safety. Azula noticed this at some point, but mistook it for her mother trying to make sure she was adhering to her bed time. So she made it a habit of forcing herself to stay awake until Ursa passed by, because she doesn’t like the idea of being check up on during her sleep.

- Azula likes knives, and she probably would’ve gotten a collection if she could. It’s an interest she bonded over with Mai, and why she was so upset when Uncle Iroh gifted Zuko a dagger and not her. This interest kinda faded over time though as she got older.

- Azula once dug through her mother’s makeup try to it on (like little kids do.) But Ursa caught her and scolded her for it, claiming she was too young to be wearing makeup. So when Ursa disappeared, Azula started wearing it as an act of defiance. And Ozai let her because he seriously couldn’t care less about that sort of thing. (That’s my reasoning as to why she wears makeup in the show.)

my family and i went to go look at christmas lights bc theres a HUGE ASS neighborhood that always goes way over the top and they were like “HEY get in the car” so we did bc we have to and i was sitting in the back with my 11 year old brother and i was asked him if he wanted to hear about the books ive been reading and he was like “yeah sure idc” and i was like cool!! bc my brothers know how happy it makes me when i talk abt books i read and so they humor me (most of the time) so i start talking abt shatter me and how i didnt finish the series bc i got bored of it but its ok bc warnette got together so woohooo thats all i wanted. then my other brother who’s almost 14 starts talking shit or whatever and says something abt how no one wants to listen to me talk abt books and i was like oh ok well i was talking to cody not you and then cody started telling him he was a brat or whatever (yk the usual sibling name calling) and then my dad jumped to the rescue of trey (the 14 yo) saying that we should include him so then i said “well trey started being mean first, cody’s just trying to defend me” and my mom was like “yeah they were perfectly fine until trey started stuff” and so it was this big thing and then eventually it calmed down a bit and cody asked about the other books ive been reading and i told him about six of crows bc i thought he would like that and i started describing kaz and he was like “so hes dark and brooding and misunderstood” and i laughed bc all i told him was that kaz was a 17 yo crime boss who killed people but its ok bc he cant touch people without passing out or vomiting (no the best description of kaz i realize but hes 11 and i thought he’d find it weird). so we laugh bc its funny and my mom says somwthing to my dad abt how we were rubbing it in that trey was being “left out” so i just ignore it and keep talking bc that wasnt what was happening at all i just wanted to talk abt my damn books and cody seemed genuinely interested. then she said to the whole car “why dont we just go home” and i was like why??? and she was like “bc no one is in a good mood and youre leaving your brother out and cody doesnt even want to hear about your stupid books he’s only doing it to get to trey and leave him out and no one cares” so i told her that cody was listening before trey said anything and i just wanted to talk abt them. and then she kept going on about how no one wanted to hear about my books because no one gives a shit and no one cares and no one wants to listen. and then i started crying bc i knew people didnt really care but why was it such a big deal?  i never talk about any of my interests with anyone and they are the only ones who i actually feel comfortable talking about this stuff with so why is it such a big deal? i get it no one cares but at least they pretend to, even if they arent listening or i dont make much sense when im talking about them at least im talking. im not in contact with any of my friends rn because my parents took away my phone so i only have my laptop so all i do is sit on tumblr and read books and browse ao3 which sounds amazing and it kind of is but i miss my best friend and driving and hanging out with them and im barely eating bc i dont have an appetite and my meds ran out a while ago so ive been really down lately and i failed my dual enrollment classes bc i just cant seem to do anything (thats why my phone and keys were taken) and i dont blame them for punishing me ik i screwed up but my mom wont look into putting me back into therapy or finding a new psychologist and i just want to be okay again but im isolated and numb but when i try to express an interest in the one thing that makes me feel something i get yelled at and told that no one gives a shit and it just sucks but its okay ill be okay
