hi! so i tried to use the event repeater mod and I have no idea about coding. I was wondering if your Sebastian cutscenes could be maybe compiled in a video so I can see what I accidentally skipped through ??? ;-;
There actually is one in Spanish on YouTube somebody posted, only helpful if you can read Spanish though. Event Repeater allows your save to forget events so you can see them again if you still meet the conditions. In order to actually play an event again you don’t need that mod. In the console, type debug ebi then the event ID (they’re in the mod description page under a spoiler tag) for example:
debug ebi MaggCrushing06162024
Then click back on your game and the event will start right away. One minor thing with this, if the event happens in Seb’s room, go there first or when the event is over, the game will dump you in Seb’s wall. It’s kind of funny to be a wall rat but also very annoying since you can’t get out!
I can make a video of the events but it will take me a few days to have time for recording and editing.

Who is the biological mother of Ebi, just a one night stand of Murdoc’s? And does she ever involve herself with either of them?
great q again…
i need to think more abt this cause i’m not opposed to it either way. Idk if i’ll ever implement Ebi’s mom further cause I like the idea of her just being a mistake from murdoc’s past that caught up w him. I like the idea of him having to face consequences for his fast lifestyle. I also like Ebi’s traits that come from an absent mother and being raised by 3 men and a teenage girl. I imagine she’d end up sort of like noodle, independent and not afraid to get in a fight. I also like the idea of her being a lot like her dad emotionally no matter how much she insists she isn’t him. She knows he’s a terrible man but he’s her dad who raised her into the woman she is, he’s kind of all she can lean on and the same goes for him. they’re each other’s solace.
I also like the idea of Ebi’s mother showing up again once she’s older. But… to what ends? Is she after a slice of Murdoc’s wealth? Does she just wanna reconnect? I imagine either way Ebi would hate it though. I think she would have pushed down the childish hope that her mum would come home one day and pushed deeper the idea that she’d have loved her. But Ebi’s mum showing up again would definitely rattle some cages. Murdoc wouldn’t be interested in being with her anymore, he’s very much a bit it and quit it guy (ignores phase 7 lore). Ebi would need some convincing on accepting her after she’d been gone so long. Surely she’d wonder why her mum didn’t try to stay with Murdoc so they could be a family or why she just left her with her dad so they could fend for themselves.
The truth of it all is that Ebi’s mum was just a one night stand that Murdoc forgot to pull out from. She carried his baby to term but wasn’t financially able to look after it so she left it with Murdoc (she knew he was rich which was at least a better spot than she was in). It eats her up inside that she never got to see her child grow up and she isn’t even sure that she made the right decision leaving her. what happens from there idk but those r my ideas anyway!
At this point the most id do is design her mum cause that sounds fun. Idk if i’ll ever draw them interacting, it would be an argument if i did hahha

what is going on with all the bias on robyn hill’s wiki page, anyway? - an aside
As someone who uses the RWBY wiki with some degree of frequency - often because I’m looking for art references, or Semblance and weapon names - I’m used to... some amount of bias in the articles for different characters? Like, let’s be real, it’s not a perfect wiki! Community-maintained stuff isn’t easy to all keep on the same track! But, generally, it gives the facts well enough and doesn’t do too bad a job keeping all the balls in the air when it comes to new information from all four corners of this franchise.
Well, until you open the article for Robyn Hill, and realise it’s an absolute disaster. Like, really; the impartial voice just plain doesn’t exist for her, and almost all of her wiki is written in such a way that she reads as being an absolutely insufferable, hostile, hard-to-like character. Even if you aren’t a fan of Robyn personally, you have to admit that if you hadn’t seen the show yourself, you might very well come away from her article presuming she’s a major antagonist of Volumes 7 and 8.
Like, for instance, let’s take a look at the first paragraph of her Personality section:
Robyn has a direct and confident personality, having no trouble being confrontational with Atlas personnel, including the Ace Operatives. Robyn also seems to suffer from overconfidence and arrogance, shown in her encounters with Ruby and celebrating her election victory before it was verified. She is aggressive and hostile in nature, quickly jumping to conflict without thinking through consequences. However, she is also shown to be reasonable when the situation calls for it.
And, for good measure, here’s another paragraph from the same section:
In "With Friends Like These" Robyn displayed a rather impulsive side of her personality, when upon hearing that James Ironwood's plan to abandon Mantle and arrest those against him, she started a fight between herself, Clover Ebi, and Qrow Branwen onboard a Manta with Tyrian Callows in custody. Despite the fact, there was no order or her arrest. Her brashness led to Tyrian breaking free and crashing the Manta as well as her becoming unconscious.
(Taken from Robyn’s RWBY Wiki page. Bolding is mine.)
In every instance here, all of the “negative” aspects of her personality take centre stage; she’s confrontational. She suffers from arrogance. She is aggressive and hostile. She started the fight. Her brashness led to the crash. All of this is only compounded when her positive traits trail behind as an afterthought; she’s direct and confrontational, overconfident and arrogant, aggressive and hostile, impulsive and jumps to conclusions... but hey! As least she’s reasonable when the situation calls for it.
The way that this information is presented to the reader is quite literally on par with how the wiki presents the personalities of the actual literal villains who appear throughout the show. Let’s take, for instance, the Personality section of Cinder Fall:
Cinder is ruthless and sadistic, as demonstrated when she delivers a killing blow to a clearly defeated Pyrrha Nikos in "End of the Beginning" and when she throws a spear at a defenseless Weiss Schnee in "The More the Merrier." She is relentlessly driven to gain power and determined to cross any line to obtain it. Cinder demonstrates a cunning that shows in her successful manipulation of events and people throughout the first three volumes. Cinder is also arrogant and egomaniacal, and as such, relishes in dominance and gloating, displaying shameless pleasure in the misery she has caused others.
Or, the Personality section of Raven Branwen:
Raven is cynical, patronizing, selfish and stubborn. She believed her act of "kindness" of saving Yang's life from Neopolitan was sufficient despite having left Yang at a very young age and refused to protect her daughter when in need after that.
Raven is also very prideful and hypocritical, refusing to acknowledge her faults and always trying to justify her actions both to others and to herself, often putting the blame on others for them even if she feels real guilt about them.
It makes sense that for an antagonist, the primary faults and flaws of their personalities will come first, as to better represent them as the villains to clarify to the reader who they are and why they act as they do in their storylines. However, the fact that Robyn arguably has an even more caustic write-up then Raven, despite not being an antagonist, goes to show the lengths this writer has gone to present her in a significantly more negative light than she ever appears in the show.
If this doesn’t seem convincing, let’s look at a more direct comparison; what does the wiki say about Ironwood? He’s present in the same seasons, and has now become more of an antagonist in the latter episodes; is the wiki quite as blunt about his flaws?
Ironwood is courteous to his allies, as shown by his first onscreen interaction with Ozpin and Glynda Goodwitch. He is also far-thinking and tactical, wondering about the future, as seen when he speaks to Ozpin about Qrow Branwen's message. He also has a jovial, friendly, humorous and proud public persona, which he uses as a spokesman for the weapon manufacturers of Atlas.
However, as courteous Ironwood may appear, he can also be incredibly blunt, often preferring the direct approach. When he feels necessary, Ironwood is not afraid to bring the full might of his military command to bear, which sparked disagreements with both Glynda and Ozpin. Nevertheless, Ironwood is extremely loyal to his comrades, and however questionable his methods may be, he seems to have genuinely good intentions behind them.
Uh, no.
Instead, when his flaws are mentioned (for example, being blunt), it’s written in a significantly less... abrasive manner. It’s referred to as the direct approach, versus Robyn who is described as confrontational. Even then, his flaws are folded in to his (alleged) positive traits; he is not afraid, extremely loyal, and has genuinely good intentions, despite the fact that the show has now proven that Ironwood’s flaws greatly outweigh these. It reveals how thoroughly all of Robyn’s actions are presented as the work of an arrogant troublemaker, whilst Ironwood’s actions are presented as the efforts of a man working towards some greater good.
Also, I’ll add that in both examples, I used the first two paragraphs of their Personality sections. These are both the first two things you read about these characters, yet look at how differently they’re summarised.
What is interesting, however, is that despite this bias being extremely self-evident, the comments on her page generally chime agreement, referring to her as “overconfident, arrogant, impulsive and hotheaded to the point of being unlikable”, and claiming that she’s “literally the worse character in the show next to cinder, blake and yang”[1]. Someone mentions that Robyn has earned quite the hatedom... but why?
Broadly, my experiences of Robyn Hill’s writing in the fandom has been through a queer lens, and the vast majority of writers who’ve covered her and the Happy Huntresses have been women, or queer, or trans, or all the above... basically, the people who are usually responsible for a vast majority of fanfiction, let’s be real. These writers love Robyn, and have explored and extrapolated on her character to marvellous degree. Yet, at no singular point have any of these flaws ever been written quite as strongly as the wiki implies they are, nor have I seen much evidence of them myself in the show. For instance, let’s take one of the more serious points in her Personality section; she started a fight between herself, Clover Ebi, and Qrow Branwen [...] her brashness led to Tyrian breaking free and crashing the Manta as well as her becoming unconscious.
When we watch this scene again, Robyn did initiate the fight... because she was rightfully aware that Clover would obey his orders, even if they were wrong. Despite everything that happened prior in the entirety of Volume 7, when given orders to bring Qrow in alongside RWBY, it was clear that Clover fully intended to follow it through, which Robyn knows from prior experience with the AceOps:
[image ID: two images of Clover, Robyn and Qrow in the dark-grey interior of the Manta ship. Robyn has her weapon aimed at Clover as he stands in front of Qrow. Clover is saying “Only Qrow is under arrest [...] please don’t make me arrest you too.”]
Her knowledge of the AceOps means that she reacted accordingly; trying to stop him from taking Qrow in and obeying Ironwood’s plan the only way she knows the AceOps respond to. Her reaction isn’t unwarranted. However, my point isn’t to argue that Robyn was right or wrong, but rather that regardless of who started the fight, the way the wiki explains this specific incident is that it’s solely Robyn’s fault that Tyrian escaped and crashed the Manta, but we know this isn’t the case. Robyn and Qrow both fought Clover, and it was Clover’s good luck (or Qrow’s bad luck, depending on how you view it) that allowed for Kingfisher to break Tyrian’s bonds. Her brashness is blamed for the outcome, but in reality, this outcome could have been avoided together if Clover had not chosen to follow his orders and bring in an innocent man. Also, she didn’t crash the Manta! That was all Tyrian! The intentional tying together of these two events as her fault, however, are a neat package of blame.
In these instances on the wiki, Robyn’s personality appears amplified, focusing specifically on her flaws and exaggerating them to the extremes that, as noted earlier, matches the language used to define the very villains of the series. Yet, the people who enjoy her and the Happy Huntresses often perceive those same flaws to a significantly lesser extent, or even see those flaws as actually being boons of her character; for instance, reading her alleged arrogance as passion. So, why such division?
Before, I mentioned her “negative” traits, and I put this into quote marks because traits don’t always align nicely into good and bad. All aspects of a person can vary on how positive they are based on context - even the show proves this, with protectiveness becoming paranoia (Ironwood) or loyalty becoming subservience (Winter). Even a character that is broadly composed of more unfavourable traits can have this contextual shift; Cinder’s stubbornness to her goals makes her a fast learner and a tenacious opponent.
Yet, why did the writer (or writers) choose to highlight almost every aspect of Robyn’s character as a bad thing? Why did they frame her decisions as such? I have a suspicion it’s to do with her character at large; she’s a bold socialist politician who believes in equality and fairness for all, who refuses to stand for incompetence and obedience towards evil causes. She’s outspoken in her views, and reacts strongly to those who threaten to overturn her work. Also, she’s a woman, in charge of a group of other women, at least one of whom is canonically trans. To those who agree with her in real life, Robyn appears as a great character! We admire her work ethic and we support her ends. To those who may not... well, it’s not hard to see how they might perceive her as more of a cocky, authority-defying upstart. Of course, the core text of RWBY doesn’t quite believe the latter; RWBY has always placed Robyn as the direct counter to authoritarianism, whether it be Jacques, Clover, or Ironwood, and even the article admits that she is a potent voice for the people of Mantle. Still, it’s clear that there’s plenty of people in a vocal minority who are deeply dissatisfied by Robyn, and aren’t afraid to make their stance on the matter exceedingly clear.
So, what does this all mean? Well, here’s what we can say for sure; Robyn’s article is, and has always been, stringently biased against her character, and often misconstrues her motives and decisions. This is maybe the more obvious part, but how should her article be worded to make this less so? Likely, I’d rephrase a lot of it to be less damaging to her character; she isn’t hostile, she holds people accountable. She isn’t quick to jump to conflict, she is familiar with how Atlas responds to anti-authority with violence. She isn’t arrogant, she believes in the power of the people as being the right thing to fight for. Even this makes it clearer that her character is about resisting the oppression inherent in Atlas, and is a much clearer outline of her personality as a whole. People may disagree with this phrasing and summary also, but given her character is based on Robin Hood, it’s also not far from the mark in terms of what she should represent.
TL;DR: Robyn’s wiki page is written with a deep bias against her character and what she represents, acts upon, and chooses to do in the show; I have no doubt that in canon, this sort of language would probably be used by Jacques himself as a smear campaign, haha. Whilst I can’t speak for the author and their motives, I have a distinct feeling that this article was written, or edited, by someone who is either:
not a fan of Robyn
not a fan of a new female character
not a fan of a new female character in a position of power
not a fan of a character with socialist/communist/antifa ideals
all of the above and then some???
Even though I’m not going to edit her wiki page (I’m very shy and I’ve never done it before), I think it’s worth analysing this if only as a reminder of the inherent biases of an author even when people are trying to present a character’s information impartially. This isn’t the first wiki I’ve seen misconstrue - or even make incorrect assumptions on - facts about a character, and it won’t be the last. In the meantime, though, I leave you with this fact:
Robyn Hill slaps huge nuts and I love her.
[1] I’m not naming the users who posted these things here, because it’s unnecessary. You can find them for yourself at the bottom of Robyn’s wiki, but there’s no need to respond; some people just don’t like Robyn, and that’s fine - I’m just explaining how bias leaks into wikis like water into a sponge. It happens!
#rwby#rwde#robyn hill#murphy's thoughts and vibes on this shit (again)#is this a new tag#i haven't really written this well and it was sort of off the cuff so sorry if there's mistake#*mistakes#LMAO#i just wanted to lay my Thoughts out#i swear if even one person msgs me like 'but robyn DOES suck' im banishing you to the Spray Cheese Hell Dimension#also im tagging as rwde but its not rwde against the show (FOR ONCE??) so

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #127
Brought to you by a marine biologist with another imposter...
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
Yup, yet another thing where we call it something that it is not. We call this a lobster but it isn’t a true lobster, despite the fact that they look similar at first glance. Spinys and true lobsters are generally large, have this thick, shrimp-like body shape with a fanned tail, but don’t be fooled. These large crustaceans don’t have any claws.
I definitely missed doing this one when it was available, and I have regrets. It was only available from October to December in the Northern Hemisphere, coinciding with when the best specimens are caught in real life for special cuisine endeavors. They were only available late at night, which also comes from real life - spiny lobsters are generally nocturnal, only leaving their reef crevices at night to look for food. Their food typically includes other invertebrates, like snails, clams, and even other crustaceans.
Spiny lobsters are very distantly related to actual lobsters. Although they are still decapod crustaceans, they are in a completely different InfraOrder called the Achelata, which include the spiny lobsters, the furry lobsters, and slipper lobsters, which are all not lobsters. Ain’t ID FUN???? They are all united in the fact that they lack the chelae, aka claws, of the front pair of legs. “Achelata” means “no claws”, in which “a-” means “not” and “chela” means “claw”. They also have very long antennae, as is really obvious on the ACNH spiny boi. They use them to scare off predators, raking the spiky antenna across their shell like scratching a chalkboard. Their larvae are also really cool and also unite them, collectively called a phyllosoma larva, which is astoundingly flat and transparent, with long legs, like in this picture:

Adorable baby~
The species of spiny lobster in ACNH is referred to as “Ise ebi” in the Japanese version, which directly refers to the Japanese Spiny Lobster (Panulirus japonicus). It is native to the Sea of Japan, around Japan, Korea, and China where it is fished fairly sustainably. As with most all of the fish and diving creatures, this guy is a delicacy best served raw.
And there you have it. Fascinating stuff, no?

Lucky catch, huh? ch2
For fairgameweek2021 I wrote a second part to a Modern AU meet-cute I wrote last year. It's not super necessary to read the first part, but here are the links for ch1 and ch2, both can be found on ao3.
@fairgameweek2021 Day 2: Modern/Supernatural. Enjoy!
-----
Qrow's luck continues to be the worst.
He couldn't sleep at all last night, tossing and turning the entire time before eventually giving up and lamenting the slow spread of sunlight through his apartment.
He tripped when he left his building and ripped the knee of his last pair of clean dress pants.
And when he got to the building, he realized he forgot his ID badge, and it was a whole process getting in without it.
Qrow knows without needing a mirror that he looks like absolute shit.
Which is why when he finally meanders into the empty elevator and a voice calls out asking him to wait, he debates pretending he didn't hear. Qrow himself has been a victim of that dick move before though, and holds his hand out in front of one side of the elevator doors. A moment later a man slides into view, and the recognition on his face is immediate.
Of course it was the hot new guy from the Atlas merger, Clover Ebi. Of course. Qrow is miserable and disheveled and now he's going to be stuck in a small space with someone that's effortlessly charming and handsome.
"Thanks for holding the door!" Clover smiles a wide, charming smile. As his eyes scan down over Qrow's form, the smile falls. "Oh, woah, you ok?"
"Rough morning," Qrow grumbles.
Clover hums in agreement and strolls into the elevator. He leans over to press a floor button, then situates about a foot from Qrow's left side.
Qrow watches Clover check his phone from the corner of his eye. Despite their... unusual meeting and Clover's bold flirting, their work schedules differed just enough Qrow has hardly seen him since the merger announcement three weeks prior.
It isn't surprising. Clover's in sales (because of course an attractive, charismatic person like him would be) while Qrow manages the accounting department. The merger also kept everyone so busy there wasn't much time to socialize at work outside of your personal department.
"So, wanna talk about it?"
Qrow jolts, and worries Clover noticed him watching. Though he reasons he can't possibly come off as any less awkward; he was openly gawking at the man when they first met. "Uh..."
"Your knee ok?" Clover asks, and squats down to examine it, as if that was a normal thing to do to basically a stranger.
No wonder he didn't seem bothered by the train situation. He seems to have no concept of personal space.
Qrow stumbles backwards into the railing along the elevator walls, and before he can wave off any concerns, the entire elevator shakes hard enough to make him fall forward directly on top of Clover.
...The fucking elevator broke.
This is just Qrow's fucking luck.
Clover, somehow, didn't budge, even with Qrow unceremoniously falling on him. The position was awkward, with Qrow basically draped over the man's back and broad shoulders.
Qrow once again wishes he died when he tripped instead of whatever this is.
He mumbles a flurry of apologies (or he thinks it was mumbling, his heart is pounding in his ears too loud to hear well) as he pushes off and scurries towards the back wall, hitting his elbow roughly against the metal railing. He barely bites down an expletive and grips his elbow tightly.
Keep it together, he chides to himself.
"Told you I'd catch you if you fell again," Clover chuckles as he slips his phone out of his pocket, turns the flashlight app on, and points the light up towards the ceiling. "Though I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting it to go that way."
Qrow blinks down at the man to find him looking over his shoulder with a giant grin on his face, the angle of the light casting harsh shadows over his features. How is he smiling in this situation? And how the hell did he not fall from that position?
"I have good balance," Clover says.
Qrow blinks. Did he say that out loud? "...what?"
"You fell but I didn't." Clover waves a finger between them. "And I could see in the way you were glaring at me that you were wondering how I didn't fall, too. Though, you are a klutz so --"
"I am not a klutz!" Qrow squawks. Clover chuckles and keeps nodding each time Qrow insists he isn't.
"You should be happy I kept my promise." Clover lifts his chin and speaks with an airy voice. "Otherwise your fall would've been worse."
Qrow finally scoffs, "Whatever."
A beat passes, then --
"You still didn't answer my question." Qrow raises a brow, waiting for Clover to continue. "Your knee?"
Clover directs the light over to Qrow's leg, which Qrow definitely hated. He swiftly covers his leg with his ratty messenger bag to hide how it was scraped and bloody; his ego has already taken far too many hits today. "It's fine, don't worry about it."
"I have some band-aids if you need one."
That would actually be very helpful, but all the attention is only making Qrow more flustered, which in turns makes him want to be more stubborn.
Then his stomach growls, loudly, and it's at that moment Qrow remembers he forgot to eat. Great.
Clover smirks, "I also have some snacks."
Qrow furrows his brows, looking straight ahead at the elevator door that won't open. His glances up to find there were still four floors away from Clover's stop, which was one lower than his own. There's also no telling how long the elevator will be out. They could be stuck here for anywhere between a few more minutes to a few hours.
Given Qrow's luck so far, he's thinking it'll be the latter.
Qrow heaves a long sigh and lowers himself to sit propped against the back wall, mindful of his knee the entire time.
"...What kind of snacks?"
Clover grins at Qrow, like he wasn't sure if he'd actually accept the offer. He shuffles over to sit against the wall as well and sets his phone face down on his thigh allowing the light to pour up around them. Once settled, he starts rummaging in his bag, pulling out each item and placing them on the floor between them.
"I got...a banana, a container of curry and rice I made for lunch, roasted almonds, a bag of fun-sized snickers --"
Qrow does a double take. The first few items made sense; given Clover's physique Qrow pegged him as the type to eat healthy and exercise and all that crap. No one naturally has muscle and arms like that without being a gym-goer-type.
But a bag of candy bars?
Either Clover doesn't notice or doesn't care about Qrow's reaction, and continues on. "-- a bag of mini reese cups, some turkey jerky, and… three packs of s'mores poptarts."
'Some' snacks, he said. There is a veritable pile of food between them, and half of it is chocolate.
"...Three packs of poptarts? Aren't there two in each one?"
"Yeah," Clover's smiling like this is a funny joke.
Qrow's eyes sweep over the various foods, pondering over what to take. "Gods, you eat as much junk as my youngest niece."
Clover nods, "She's got good taste."
"She's six," Qrow drawls, shaking his head in disbelief.
But then Clover chuckles, which makes him chuckle so hard he snorts, and suddenly they're both howling with laughter over Clover's ridiculous sweet tooth.
Unfortunately all that laughing made Qrow's stomach hurt, so he starts to gingerly pick through the pile as their laughs taper. The curry sounded delicious, but Clover mentioned it was his lunch. It's also easily the most filling thing there, making it feel wrong to take.
"You can take whatever," Clover says with a half shrug.
Qrow pauses, thinking of asking permission out right anyway when his stupid stomach growls again, and finally just picks the glass tubberware up and slides it onto his lap. Even cold, the strong smell of spice wafts through the air when he removes the lid, and he hums happily.
Qrow has shoveled about half of the dish into his mouth by the time Clover pipes up again. "Need any bandaids too?"
Qrow grimaces; he isn't gonna let that go, huh?
He swallows, and asks as he spoons up another bite, "Got any with dinosaurs or cartoon characters on 'em?"
"Actually --"
Qrow side-eyes him. The way Clover starts to giggle is a clear sign he's just being a smartass, though Qrow continues pinning him with the judgemental look as he eats another spoonful.
Clover digs through his bag for a second, and turns back holding up a box of regular, waterproof style bandages and a small tube of antibiotic. Qrow rolls his eyes, polishes off the last of the rice, and grabs the items with more force than necessary.
"Fine, geez, what are you, my mom?"
"I hope not," Clover's voice drops into something huskier, and oh, it really got Qrow's attention. "'Cause the way you were undressing me with your eyes back at the train, would be wildly inappropriate."
Qrow sputters and shoves the man's shoulder as hard as he can.
When all Clover does in response is start laughing, Qrow shoves him again.
"I was not --"
"Oh, so you just stare at everyone like that?" The way Clover waggles his brows has no business being so distracting.
Qrow inhales sharply, and turns to fumble with the lid of the bandaid box. It's only slightly mortifying how long it takes for him to finally get it open, pull a few out, and throw the box in Clover's general direction.
They sit in silence while Qrow gently patches the scraps on his knee. The antibiotic stings a little, but that means it's working so Qrow can't complain.
"So..."
Qrow glances back at Clover, figuring the man didn't continue because he wanted Qrow's full attention.
"Since you ate my lunch, I think you owe me a new one."
The way Clover smirks at Qrow makes the breath catch in his chest and his cheeks start to flush. Oh that sneaky --
"Though, I would also accept dinner, if lunch doesn't work for you."
They stare at each other for a few beats. Clover, the pinnacle of cool customer with an easy smile on his stupid handsome face, and Qrow, his face uncomfortably warm and mouth opening and closing a number of times.
"Did you plan this??"
Clover gives him a flat look. "Really?"
Qrow nods urgently.
Clover rolls his eyes, voice dripping with sarcasm as he speaks. "Yes, Qrow, I planned you skipping breakfast, and the elevator breaking, and you falling on me, and offering you food specifically for you to pick the curry, just so I could ask you out."
Ok. Qrow admits when he says it like that, it does sound ridiculous.
Well.
Qrow pretends to ponder it over, tilting his head back up towards the ceiling and humming loudly. He knows he isn't fooling either of them, and that objectively Clover's use of the curry was a smooth way to ask for a date. Much smoother than Qrow has ever been asked, if he's being honest.
"I suppose..." Qrow starts slowly, still looking away from Clover. "...that dinner would be alright. Maybe, this Friday, if you're free?"
He chances a glance towards Clover, and his heart skips a beat at the way Clover is positively beaming. Qrow wonders if he'd even survive a date at this rate. Gods, he's gonna trip again isn't he?
"Friday sounds great, wanna go straight from work?"
"Sure...you're paying for dessert though." Qrow smirks as he taps at the stack of candy sitting neglected between them. "I'll go bankrupt trying to satisfy your chocolate cravings."
Clover laughs so loud and with such force he tilts his head back. It's a nice noise, Qrow thinks.
"Deal," Clover says between giggles.
As if on cue, the lights flicker back on and the elevator wheezes as it jerks back to life, immediately resuming it's slow ascend up the building.
Qrow glances from the overhead light to Clover. "Didn't plan this, huh?"
"You caught me, Qrow," Clover raises his hands in mock surrender. "I magically turned the elevator back on."
The two share another laugh, then work to clean up the pile of food and pack it away. Clover stands up and offers Qrow a hand, which Qrow doesn't think about how warm it is, and gently pulls him back up onto his feet.
As soon as Clover releases Qrow's hand, he passes his phone towards him. "You should add your number, y'know, so we can finalize the details." Clover winks.
Qrow concentrates more than should be necessary to make sure he grabs the phone without fumbling, quickly types his number into the new contact page, and hands it back.
The elevator dings upon arrival at Clover's floor, and with a final lingering look he strolls off the elevator. Clover spins on his heel once outside the doors to wink again.
"Talk to you soon, klutz."
The doors close before Qrow has a chance to argue. But that's fine, he'll have plenty of time to on Friday.

[id: A screenshot from The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, above screenshots from v7e7 of Clover’s mission briefing “Now, we may all be in different trucks [...] If your truck is hit, pursue immediately. Everyone else will move in as fast as possible.”
The longer PDF screenshot reads ‘NOW WHEN THE SHERIFF found that neither law nor guile could overcome Robin Hood, he was much perplexed, and said to himself, "Fool that I am! Had I not told our King of Robin Hood, I would not have gotten myself into such a coil; but now I must either take him captive or have wrath visited upon my head from his most gracious Majesty. I have tried law, and I have tried guile, and I have failed in both; so I will try what may be done with might." Thus communing within himself, he called his constables together and told them what was in his mind. "Now take ye each four men, all armed in proof," said he, "and get ye gone to the forest, at different points, and lie in wait for this same Robin Hood. But if any constable finds too many men against him, let him sound a horn, and then let each band within hearing come with all speed and join the party that calls them. Thus, I think, shall we take this green-clad knave. Furthermore, to him that first meeteth with Robin Hood shall one hundred pounds of silver money be given, if he be brought to me dead or alive; and to him that meeteth with any of his band shall twoscore pounds be given, if such be brought to me dead or alive. So, be ye bold and be ye crafty."’]
nervous laughter increasing
i KNEW i had a bad feeling about Clover "Sheriff of Nottingham" Ebi and his shipment ambush plan.
It should be noted that this plan does NOT result in the capture of Robin Hood. It results in the capture of Will Stutely, Robin's usual designated lieutenant and most loyal companion--Will is such a fixture in Robin's life that in most versions he doesn't even have an origin story, he's just...always been there.
Will is captured when he slips, undercover, into a tavern to eavesdrop on the Sheriff’s men who are scouring the woods for Robin, to find out if they’ve made any breakthroughs. It’s sheer, stupid chance--in this version, a cat rubs against his leg in greeting and in doing so reveals the lincoln green under his disguise. He’s jumped by the group, and even outnumbered five to one he’s good enough with a staff that they almost don’t manage to hold him down--but of course they do, and he’s dragged off to the Sheriff. He’s set to be hanged immediately, that evening, both to set an example and explicitly as a message to Robin.
If that plotline sounds familiar, it should--in the Disney movie, the role is played by Friar Tuck.

In honor of the announcement of the new TMM anime, I’ve decided to address one of the biggest remaining mysteries in TMM history.
That’s right, the question on everyone’s mind: What food was Buling’s family eating in chapter 18* of the manga?
(I was looking this up for my own purposes, so I thought I might as well make a post out of it. That’s where most of my meta posts come from, actually...)
*Tokyopop numbers it differently, but...... they’re wrong. Just plain wrong. I might do another post on this...
First of all, they’re eating dim sum. Dim sum is a style of Chinese cuisine where you eat a lot of small dishes served on their own plates/baskets, generally with tea. In Japan, dim sum is called tenshin (点心) or yamucha (飲茶). Unlike American dim sum restaurants, Japanese ones tend to be more cafe-like, and generally serve Japanese-style “Chinese food”, or chuukaryouri (中華料理). Basically, sort of like American Chinese food has been altered to fit American tastes, chuuka has been changed to fit Japanese tastes.
---
More on chuuka:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Chinese_cuisine
http://www.flavorandfortune.com/dataaccess/article.php?ID=42
More on dim sum in Japan:
https://gurunavi.com/en/japanfoodie/2018/03/dim-sum.html
---
Detailed analysis under cut!
First of all, it’s the fish that was explicitly mentioned! (At least I’m pretty sure that one on the bottom left is fish. I don’t think dumplings would have the eye dots...) Pretty sure this isn’t a type of chuuka, but in fact yakizakana, a purely Japanese dish. That term basically refers to any fish that’s grilled and then served whole. There’s not enough detail to guess on the specific kind of fish...
Next up is rice! You know what rice is.
These are harumaki (春巻き), or spring rolls. Their original Chinese name is chun juan (春卷). They’re basically the equivalent of the egg rolls you’d find at American Chinese takeout places: meat (usually pork) and vegetables (cabbage, onion, carrot, mushrooms) rolled in a wrapper and then fried.
These are nikuman (肉饅 or 肉まん), or pork buns. Their original Chinese name is baozi (包子), although that term can refer to all types of steamed buns, not just meat-filled ones.
This is might be another type of bao called a nai huang bao (奶黄包). (That second character is the one meaning yellow that’s Buling’s surname! Also, I could not hit on the right katakana...) It’s filled with egg custard. It might also be a sesame bao, since it looks like it has sesame seeds as decoration on top. It would be totally out of place in this meal, but the sesame seeds on top makes it look a lot like an anpan, which is a type of bread filled with sweet red bean paste.
These are shuumai (焼売, usually written as シューマイ). That’s a pretty straightforward transliteration of the original Chinese shumai (烧卖). Japanese shuumai are filled mostly with pork.
These are shoronpo (ショロンポ), a transliteration of the Chinese xiao long bao (小笼包), i.e., soup dumplings.
These are gyouza (餃子, usually written ギョーザ) from the Chinese jiaozi (餃子). (Okay, so its actually from the Jilu Mandarin pronunciation, giǎoze. Long story short, Chinese has many dialects which pronounce characters very differently.) They’re usually filled with cabbage, mushrooms, and pork or chicken. Gyouza are more garlicy and have a thicker wrapper than jiaozi.
These are goma dango (胡麻団子 or ごま団子), or sesame dumplings/sesame balls. The original Chinese name is jian dui (煎堆). Jian dui are usually filled with lotus seed paste, while goma dango are filled with red bean paste.
It’s not quite as clear, but I think these are supposed to be ebi chili/ebichiri (エビチリ), which is derived from Szechuan cuisine. It’s basically shrimp in chili sauce. They might also be something fried, like karaage (basically fried chicken), but it really looks like there are tails curling in.
These are too vague to say for sure. The first definitely looks like something circular and breaded based on the bumpy outline, so they might be croquettes/kurokke (コロッケ). It could really be anything fried, or some type of bun... The one in the middle looks like some kind of stir fry, so it might be twice-cooked pork/hoikourou (回鍋肉). No idea about that last one. Not even sure if Mia Ikumi knew when she drew it...

Katsu Midori: One of the BEST Kaiten Sushi in Tokyo
In case you haven’t noticed yet i am a huge Kaiten sushi enthusiast. If you don’t know what Kaiten Sushi is, it is the conveyor belt sushi restaurant that you can find everywhere in Japan. The atmosphere is much more casual (and fun) than the traditional sushi restaurants; You are not seating in front of the Itamae, which means that you don’t have to behave and no one will judge you if you plunge your sushi (and rice) in too much soy sauce or eat too much Gari (ginger). Kaiten Sushi are often criticised for delivering sushi of average quality. Whilst it can be true, it is not the case at Katsu Midori, considered by many including myself one of the best Kaiten Sushi in Tokyo.
The Restaurant:
Katsu Midori 活美登利 is a famous chain of Kaiten Sushi Restaurants that has several locations in Tokyo (Ikebukuro and Shibuya amongst the most famous) and also nationwide (Funabashi, Kawasaki).
The branch i visit all the time (and the one i review in this article), is the Katsu Midori located in the big Seibu Ikebukuro department store. You can access the store directly from Ikebukuro station by heading toward the Seibu Ikebukuro exit. You will then find Katsu Midori on the 8th floor of the department store. For your information, the 8th Floor or Seibu is a dining hall with all kind of delicious restaurants and food.
Katsu Midori‘s first restaurant opened in 2002. The name refers to the kanji Katsu “活” meaning Lively or Fresh. It is linked to their mission of providing delicious and fresh Sushi affordable for everyone. They live by this motto, and 16 years later, we can say that Katsu Midori is ahead of the Kaiten Sushi game in Tokyo.
The Menu:
Click on the picture for the full menu
My review of Katsu Midori:
Katsu Midori is a very demanded restaurant. In fact, unless you are super lucky (it never happened to me) you can expect to queue from 20 minutes to an hour to eat there. I have even tried to visit the restaurant on a weekday at the morning opening and people were already queuing to get inside. The good thing is that it wasn’t your typical Tripadvisor Tourists waiting in line. No, It was proper Japanese people: Salaryman sneaking away from the office, teenagers, family, grandparents, workers… (You know what it means right? Delicious food!). It is often the case with renowned Kaiten Sushi in Tokyo such as Katsu Midori, Toriton or Nemuro Hanamaru.
Once seated i knew i was in for my usual treat. Before that, let me tell you about The ordering system at Katsu Midori is the following: First of all, you have the obvious conveyor belt running through the restaurant. The chefs prepare fresh Sushi in the middle of the restaurant and put them on the conveyor system. Because of the quality of the Sushi served there, you have a high turnover of Sushi on the belt. It means that you probably won’t see the same sad Nigiri coming back several times in front of you before a new innocent customer picks it up. Secondly, you have a digital tablet at each seat. From this tablet, you have access to the menu including a selection of all the Sushi and specialities served at Katsu Midori. You can order them from your tablet and the plates get delivered directly in front of you (how convenient). The tablet has an English menu which is quite helpful. If you don’t manage to set up the tablet in English simply wave at a Waiter and ask “Sumimasen, English Onegaishimasu” they will know what to do.
Now let me tell you why i consider that Katsu Midori is probably the best Kaiten Sushi in Tokyo:
A wide selection…
Gunkan Tuna
Fesh Scallop
Baby Octopus
One of the reasons why i love Katsu Midori is because of the wide selection of Sushi that they have. The Menu starts at a low price point with a large range of appetizing Sushi for 100円: Maguro (Tuna), Aji (Horse Mackerel), Iwashi (Sardine), Ebi (Fresh shrimp),…, just to name a few. Within the 200-300円 price range, you have an amazing choice of delicious option: Toro (Fatty Tuna), Hotate (Scallop), Botan Ebi (Jumbo sweet Shrimp), Kanpachi (Amberjack), Uni (Sea Urchin,)… On a higher price point, you will find premium mouth watering items such as Zuwaigani (Snow crab 450円) and Otoro (Premium Fatty Tuna 500円). At Katsu Midori, you will not only find the usual sushi offering but also, the menu has a selection of Seasonal items such as the delicious Kuruma shrimp or fresh abalone. In addition, you can find some unique items such as the Golden Sushi (500円). It is a nigiri Sushi made of premium ingredients including Otoro (Fatty Tuna), Uni (Sea Urchin), Ikura (Salmon Roe) and Gold Leaf (crazy right?). A bit pricey but delicious! Overall, the range of Sushi available at Katsu midori is quite large and they have an excellent value for money.
…of Fresh and Delicious Sushi :
Aburi Iwashi
Otoro
Unagi
You can tell me, Ey Captain! It is great to have a wide range of Sushi to choose from, but the first thing is to ensure that they are fresh and delicious. Rest assured the sushi at Katsu Midori are simply Amazing! That’s the other reason why i love Katsu Midori. Each time i go there i am impressed at how fresh the Sushi taste! With the wide range of Sushi that they have and the amount that they must be serving on a daily basis, you would think that you’re going to be disappointed at some point. Well, it just never happened. Not only the Sushi are fresh and Tatsy but the serving are also super generous. The chefs at Katsu Midori aren’t shy with the slices of fish that they serve. Just look at the large slice of Otoro and Unagi on the pictures above. You know the saying Generosity is a practical expression of love; Needless to say that my belly is conquered.
Conclusion:
To finish my review of Katsu Midori, i would like to say that the restaurant has also a really nice vibe, casual atmosphere and is foreigner friendly. The staff is brilliant, attentive and always helpful. I remember one time where i missed the last plate of a special nigiri sushi who passed in front of me. A chef caught my disappointment from far away and prepared another one for me that he brought over without me asking. I was amazed and needless to say that he made my day (Yes i am an easy man to please). Another time also, i ordered a special seasonal item that i had no idea how to eat. One of the chefs saw my confusion and explained to me with a friendly laugh how to eat it. Since them, the Ikebukuro Branch became my favourite one.
A happy day at Katsu Midori Ikebukuro
“If you have to pick one Kaiten Sushi in Tokyo it has to be Katsu Midori.
Casual atmosphere, great selection of Fresh Fish and amazing price for value”
“Oishii desu!”
Overall: 5/5

EU data portal launches to support COVID-19 research
The European Commission has launched a data portal for scientists studying the SARS-CoV-2 virus to speed up access to data sets and tools in order to bolster research efforts by encouraging data reuse and open science.
The COVID-19 Data Portal is intended to accelerate regional efforts to combat the virus by creating a central repository for storing and sharing available research data, such as DNA sequences, protein structures, data from pre-clinical research and clinical trials and epidemiological data.
Mariya Gabriel, the EU’s commissioner for innovation, research, culture, education and youth, described it as an “important concrete measure for stronger cooperation in fighting the coronavirus.”
“Building on our dedicated support for open science and open access over the years, now is the time to step up our efforts and stand united with our researchers. Through our joint efforts, we will better understand, diagnose and eventually overpower the pandemic,” she said in a statement.
The
#COVID19 Data Platform helps scientists to share & analyse coronavirus data at an unrivalled scale and speed! Happy to launch #ERAvsCorona Action Plan's portal together w/ #EU countries, @emblebi, @ELIXIREurope, @CompareEurope & others! #OpenScience https://t.co/Rb8SSbtihr pic.twitter.com/dogoLhlLP6
— Mariya Gabriel (@GabrielMariya) April 20, 2020
The initiative is a joint effort by the Commission, the European Bioinformatics Institute of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL-EBI), the Elixir infrastructure and the COMPARE project, working with EU Member States and other partners.
It’s one part of a package of measures agreed on by EU leaders to encourage pan-EU coordination over research and innovation to fight the virus.
“Rapid and open sharing of data greatly accelerates research and discovery, which is essential to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic,” runs the blurb on the COVID-19 Data Portal website.
“An unprecedented number of scientific efforts are taking place worldwide in order to help combat the new coronavirus epidemic (COVID-19). One of the biggest challenges in this fast-moving situation is to share data and findings in a coordinated way, in order to understand the disease and to develop treatments and vaccines.
“To address this challenge, EMBL-EBI and partners have set up the COVID-19 Data Portal, which will bring together relevant datasets submitted to EMBL-EBI and other major centres for biomedical data. The aim is to facilitate data sharing and analysis, and to accelerate coronavirus research.”
The data portal is one of two connected pieces of what’s intended as a wider European COVID-19 Data Platform — illustrated in the below diagram — the other being SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs, which will “organise the flow of SARS-CoV-2 outbreak sequence data and provide comprehensive open data sharing for the European and global research communities,” fed by inputs from national health data infrastructures and public health labs.
“To rapidly populate the COVID-19 Data Portal, EMBL-EBI will bring together COVID-19 datasets that have been submitted to its public databases, including ENA, UniProt, PDBe, EMDB, Expression Atlas and Europe PMC,” is how it’s explained on the site. “The data, which have so far been collated, include genes, protein structures, electron microscopy data and scientific publications.”
Data submissions to the COVID-19 Data Portal can be made here — where the website notes that: “Non-biological data of relevance to COVID-19, such as travel, trade, meteorology and social distancing behaviour are not managed within the European COVID-19 Data Platform, but where possible are linked to data within the system.”
In addition to the data platform, other actions agreed via the action plan include coordinating funding for relevant research; extending large EU-wide clinical trials; increasing support to “innovative companies”; and supporting a pan-European Hackathon in the end of April to mobilise European innovators and the civil society.
The joint plan’s “priority actions” will continue to be updated with input from the Commission and national governments over the coming months, it said.
Overall, the Commission said it’s committing “hundreds of millions” of euros in research and innovation measures to develop vaccines, new treatments, diagnostic tests and medical systems to prevent the spread of the coronavirus — though not all of this is new funding, since it’s factoring in long-term investment vehicles such as FP7 & Horizon 2020.
More specifically, it highlights the “rapid mobilization” of €48.2M for 18 shortlisted research projects — including work being done on rapid point-of-care diagnostic tests; new treatments; new vaccines; and on epidemiology and modelling to improve preparedness and response to outbreaks.
It also flags hybrid support efforts — saying it has mobilized public and private funding of up to €90 million through the Innovative Medicines Initiative; and offered up to €80 million of financial support to CureVac to scale up development and production of a vaccine against the coronavirus.
Additionally, a recent European Innovation Council Accelerator call of €164 million attracted what the Commission dubs “a significant” number of startups and SMEs with innovations that it hopes will help tackle the pandemic.
The Commission’s press release also notes 50 ongoing or completed European Research Council projects which it says are contributing to the response to the coronavirus pandemic by providing insights from several different scientific fields — including virology, epidemiology, immunology, public health, medical devices, social behaviour and crisis management.

• The acronym has and can change, and most used versions include a + at the end, whether they are LGBT+, LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIA+, etc.
• nb is valid! And if an enby person IDs as trans good for them! But don't force that label on all ebies
• I've seen people assume bisexuality is transphobic but pansexuality? Could someone explain this one? (Also bi and pan are iverlapping but not inherently the same and it's up to each individual how they id)
• this depends on which acronym, and a does NOT stand for allies. Closeted people are included in whatever hey id as, even when closeted. Just because a gay man is cooseted, does not mean he is not a gay man. Allies are accepted and appreciated, but not part of the community. I'm white, and I can support PoC but I'm still not part of their community and it wouldn't be fair if I tried to force myself into it
• this is why some people think our community is bad, we should want equality not superiority
• demisexual people experience attraction in their own way, they don't get attracted to random strangers and celebrities and people their friends set them up with like other people and that's ok let them have their identities? (As on my other post, this is something I remember reading from someone who does id as demisexual so I could be somewhat off)
• the point about queer is the only one I agree with, some people are ok with it but not everyone, please don't call anyone this without permission
• polyamory is another marginalized identity that can cause people to be abused, hated, and hurt because of the way they love and our community, one built on love and acceptance, is a safe place for them to be who they are
pride month is tomorrow! with all the excitement, here’s a couple of things to remember:
-the full acronym is lgbt!
-nb is valid! just under the T
-pansexuality is a transphobic identity that should just be called bisexuality!
-there is absolutely not an A in the acronym! if there was, it would be for Ally!(not cishets, closeted people who still need to use lgbt resources without being outed)
-if you’re a cishet, you will Face The Guillotine!
-demisexuality is being a Normal Person!
-do Not! call anybody Q*eer without their permission as not everybody chooses to identify with that term and it is still a slur!
-polyamory is most certainly not lgbt!
#tired of this shit#tired of people policing our community#you are not the overlord of pride#let people be themselves#why do you have to be rude#this is a time of love and acceptance#so can you just#not

Inquiry-Based Learning in the History Classroom

Vicki: Today we’re talking to a Seventh and Eighth Grade History Teacher from California, Joshua Eby @EbysHist.
Now, Josh… You’re doing some exciting things right now in your classroom. Describe what you’re doing this week.
Constitutional Convention Simulation for Teaching History
Josh: So this week we have been working on the Constitutional Convention.
What I was able to do was (assign) each of my students a different role at the convention, playing someone who was actually there. They have a background speaker card, and actually a mask and everything that shows.
We start with a “Meet and Greet” where they actually get to know each other and know who’s at the convention, the various people.
The we work through the various compromises that went through the convention. Each student gets to vote. The get to deliberate. They get to discuss. They get to debate. All based upon the actual person that was at the convention.
Vicki: So they have to play the role.
Josh: That’s correct.
How it works
So they are given, again, a background card for each person that was at the convention. They play one of thirty-two people. If I have more than 32 students, I have to invent some other roles for them. (laughs)
Vicki: (laughs)
Josh: So they have kind of their personal background in each card — their views on different topics they get. And then they have “points of contention” that they need to raise throughout the convention.
Vicki: How do you make sure that everyone gets a chance to speak?
Josh: That’s through the idea of giving their points to raise. So at some point we just do a piece where it’s almost a Socratic piece, where everyone says their role. Everyone says their viewpoint on at least one topic. So I monitor that, as the teacher, and we make sure that throughout the three to four days that we of that, all 30+ students get an opportunity to speak.
Vicki: What do the students think about this?
How Students Give Feedback to the Process
Josh: I’m waiting…
Actually, tomorrow we’re doing a Google form in which they are going to evaluate their place at it.
Just off of my viewpoint, they just seem so much more excited to come into the classroom each day. Not only are they playing the roles, but I re-create and make the classroom to look different. So they’re sitting by state each day. They have to pick up their card. They pick up their mask.
I saw some students that weren’t normally participating as much — getting involved in discussing.
Looking at some formative assessments I’ve done thus far, they definitely are getting the material and the curriculum in a more advanced level than they would be, say through direct instruction or note taking or reading strategies.
Vicki: Josh, are you always this “hands on”?
Why Josh Gets Students Involved in Hands On History
Josh: I try to be!
As oftentimes as we can. I just feel that when students get to LIVE the history and be a part of it, they definitely benefit more. I think changing into looking at inquiry-based styles, there is also that place for role-play as well within that.
I think that at least my students aren’t as shy in many times as we do that. They get a little more involved. Part of it is using those masks that we have. It’s just nice because they get to hide a little bit, too, if they’re not as comfortable being out front.
Vicki: Oh, I like that.
So, if you look at your whole school year, what is the greatest “knock it out of the park” activity you do with your students in history class?
A Lewis and Clark Experience
Josh: Wow. That’s a good question.(laughs)
One of the things we do — and for me, it’s more something that I love as a teacher — is when we study Lewis and Clark, again they take the role of someone on the travels. They write a journal as if they were either Lewis or Clark or someone else as a part of the expedition.
I think, for me, the value in it is not just the learning about what happened on their travels, but the exploration of America.
I travel all across our country in the summer. I RV with my family, and getting my own students to just see the expansiveness of our nation, and the diversity that we have… I think it comes out in those journals. Along with the writing and just getting to see how they think, as well, and kind of their own reflective process.
Vicki: So are you in a different place each day when they’re journaling, to kind of introduce it, or do they study this on their own?
Josh: It’s a little bit of both. Sometimes they read on their own and kind of gather where Lewis and Clark are. Then we have a map that we follow through their travels all the way to Oregon.
What Mistakes Has Josh Made in Inquiry Based Learning?
Vicki: Have you ever made a mistake with this inquiry-based learning approach?
Josh: Oh gosh! All the time!
I would say the biggest mistake that I’ve realized is (that) sometimes letting the kids go before they have solid background foundation.
Even what we’re studying now, in California, they’re supposed to have studied the Constitutional Convention in 5th grade. It’s a large part of our 5th grade social studies curriculum. So i’ve made some “jumps” for them, thinking that they have that foundation.
And they struggled early on. So, again, scaffolding their reading and their background information — for me — helps lay that groundwork so they can really get to the inquiry and the higher order thinking skills we’re looking for.
Vicki: How long has it taken you to get to this approach? Do you ever look back on how you started teaching at first, and how you’ve grown?
Josh: Yes. I think the amount of direct instruction that I used to give in my early years is almost negligible, compared to what we do now.
I think part of it is for me having my own grasp of the material as well, and the curriculum as well, and feeling comfortable with that, knowing that I can change and adjust on the fly as we go.
Josh Moved from Administration Back into the Classroom
And then, previously, I actually spent 12 years as an administrator before the classroom. Again this year, I went back to teaching this year. I think sitting on the other side of the room has really helped me see that kids can inquire. What are different strategies we can use to get that done?
Vicki: Are you glad to be back?
Josh: I love it! Yes. It is amazing. Best decision I’ve made.
Vicki: To come back from administration to the classroom… You don’t see that happen very often, do you?
Josh: No. No. I think I’m one of the few. I only know of two others, and they were at the very end of their careers, actually, and I think that they wanted to finish their last couple of years in the classroom again.
I enjoyed my time in administration, but I really really missed working with the students each day. And I’ve seen that benefit again. It really has re-infused my passion for education and my passion for teaching.
What About Being An Administrator Has Made You a Better Teacher
Vicki: Is there anything you learned as an administrator that’s made you a better teacher?
Josh: Yes! One thing I saw as an administrator, sitting on the other side and observing classrooms, is the importance of “wait time”…
I don’t think, as a teacher, I saw this.
Because you know, I’d ask teachers, “How long do you think you just waited?” And they would give me anything from say, a minute to a minute-and-a-half. And I’d be like, “It was only 20 seconds.”
So realizing that bow as a teacher, and using wait time to let kids process, and realizing that your time as a teacher — you don’t realize how much time you’ve actually taken to wait.
Really getting to value that now, knowing that sitting back and giving kids time to process leads itself to better thinking for them and better responses as well.
Slowing Down When Asking Questions
Vicki: So when you ask a question now, you are in less of a rush than you were before you were an administrator?
Josh: Absolutely. And I think a lot of that is just (laughs) age, as well? Just time?
I started teaching at 22 years old. I think everything went fast.
Vicki: (laughs)
Josh: But I think again, being an administrator and realizing how sometimes teachers were… I saw that teachers were rushing… and didn’t realize they were.
Having that mindset now to know, “I can get to what I need to get to, even if I just wait a little longer for kids to process the question that they’ve asked.”
Or… even a project we’re doing, or an activity we’re doing. Just wait. Let them have time before we start getting to work, so they really know what they have to do.
Vicki: So much great advice here we’ve gotten from Josh about being a remarkable teacher.
This one issue of wait time? You know, that really hits home to me. Sometimes I think I don’t wait long enough.
So many wonderful ideas here.
Let’s get kids up. Let’s get them moving.
And off of this idea of having masks for role-playing — so marvelous! I think it can really do some things in the classroom.
I hope you’ll take this and apply this to your classroom, whether it’s history or any subject!
