The day Thomas Muller became a national hero in Colombia (South America)
Because of my husband Thomas Muller's NT retirement, I decided to remember that time when he became an icon in this unknown third-world country~
Storytime~
Get something to eat because here comes my longest post ever and one of my favorite things to ever happen in this hellhole <3
No introduction is needed for the 2014 World Cup. So let's just skip to the good part. One of the breakthrough teams was Colombia, a humble but passionate team, they were having their best run so far, and literally everyone in the country wanted them to go as far as possible.
In a country where literally every day the government makes you hate every part of living here, the NT is always a beacon of joy to make us feel proud of being Colombian. And even more now, that we had the Best goal of the match and the Top scorer of the whole tournament.
After an amazing run against teams like Uruguay and Ivory Coast, the day came, when we had to play against Brazil. I don't know how it was perceived in the rest of the world, but here in South America, almost everyone knew Brazil was winning the whole thing, even with rumors of the WC being fixed to favor them (ofc rumors or not but still).
In the Colombia V Brazil match, 3 important things happened.
Neymar was Injured
Thiago Silva was suspended via accumulation of yellow cards
And the catalyst of this story
3. An equalizer Goal from Mario Yepes was mistakenly determined as offside and annulled.
Due to this last event, Colombia was automatically eliminated without the chance of going to penalties.
THIS is Colombia's Trauma™, you can ask any of us. We even have a popular saying we use to this day because of this 'Era gol de Yepes' (Like saying that goal was always legit). But we weren't sad. We were infuriated. We demanded vengeance, we wanted vengeance (We're way too passionate about this, what do you want me to say).
After that, yeah, there were the other quarterfinals, whatever, we didn't care. All of us were waiting for the Germany V Brazil and due to the rumors I spoke about before, we were very scared of Germany losing.
As an important note here, while we were very angry, a very good portion of the Colombians just dropped the whole thing due to idk post-elimination depression. On a personal note, never in my life did I see my country in such silence. I went out to visit my family and the capital had the most depressing silence I've ever experienced. When I tell you this WC meant the world to us I was very serious, a lot of Colombians went to Brazil in buses or walking to see the matches, and some even slept on the streets or stuff like that to keep on supporting.
So, the day of the Germany V Brazil match arrived, and oh boy we didn't have an idea.
At this point, very few of us were still watching the tournament. In the beginning, they were very balanced... And then the game started.
We already knew what happened in that legendary game so let me just tell you the story from our point of view. All of Colombia was rooting for Germany, we wanted, no, we needed Germany to win. Brazil started attacking first so we were quite nervous.
Then a certain player bested Brazil's clueless defenses and scored the first one for Germany.
Everyone was celebrating as if it was our own country, we started calling other people to turn on the TV, our family, neighbors, everyone. The stores and cafeterias tuned the match to see the ones that (in our eyes) did us so wrong, get humiliated by such a great team.
Of course, almost no one knew who this guy was, but Javier Hernández (the most popular commentator here) felt exactly the same as everyone else and loved every second of that first goal, making sure every single Colombian heard this player's name loud and clear, the one that avenged us. Thomas Muller.
Here you can hear what all of us heard that day: (Turn on audio to witness the insanity)
(Sorry for the quality of the video, I know it's ass but this was a recording from a fan from a TV 10 years ago lol)
Then the goals came one after another, and the rest is history. But to us it was special, we celebrated as if it was our own country. Here are some comments from Colombians:
T: Thanks for avenging us Germany
T: Forbidden to forget this match, when all of us were German for 90Min, Thanks! (Germany x4 Trophies) I'll never get over him and neither any colombian, Thomas Muller 7-1 / 8-2
T: Muller 2014: 7-1 Muller 2020: 8-2 He's always in every historic scoring in football
T: In that match All of Colombia was Germany
And like those you can find hundreds and hundreds. The day after the match we kept on celebrating, the memes were everywhere, especially one where James (our star player) called Thomas and asked him to score against Brazil (ofc that never happened, was a silly meme that reflected the general feeling). Also, I clearly remember the news and variety shows on national channels opening their broadcast greeting in German (or at least trying lol). It was so funny and at the end, we received our NT and celebrated their progress and Germany won the cup.
Pretty much a happy ending for everyone.
#third world countries are a very fun place to live in#i swear#and its 2 am i'll go to sleep I had so much fun doing this long ass post that no one's gonna read#sometimes it be like that#idc i loved every second of putting this together#thomas muller#fc bayern#germany nt#thomas müller#colombia#world cup 2014#brazil

Let's Play Getting to Know Alana (Stolen from a TikTok)
Footballer who made you fall in love with the game
First Favourite Footballer
Footballer who brings you the most comfort
Footballer who's smile lights up your day
Footballer you miss seeing at your club
Footballer you miss the most
Footballer You Would Defend Your Life for
Yesssss i was hoping i'd get one of these!
A very common one but its easily ronaldinho. this MF made the sport look like so much fun. every second he was on the ball i just couldn't look away because WOW. you could just see the love he had for the sport from the way he played the game
2. Thomas Muller. again probably a really common one but he was and still is a fascinating player. for someone to be able to do so much with simply the mastery of the basics was so cool to see. and you can't talk about muller without talking about his shithousery cos no one does it as well as him. poking fun at a rival while making it crystal clear that he has no malicious intentions is hard to to but he manages it perfectly. he always just brought a smile to my face whenever he was on the pitch (and when i heard him yelling off the pitch)
3. i think something about luka modric brings me a lot of comfort. he's enigmatic on the ball and a phenomenal leader. the way he lead croatia throughout their international tournament run made him so likeable and respectable. i just couldn't help but root for him. he deserves every ounce of success he's had and much more. that ballon d'or couldn't have gone to a better person, its been an honour to watch him play.
4. the one and only... Yassine bounou. he's just a lovely human being. he seems like such a kind and warm person that i can't help but adore him. you couldn't hate him if you tried. from opposition to referees, he just sets such a good example to those around him. he's achieved astounding things in the past few years and i've loved seeing him get recognition for it recently. he's got an infectious positivity about him and i think it's just a good influence on everyone. we all need someone like him in our lives imo
5. without a doubt robert lewandowski. i think we all remember his iconic 5 goals in 9 minutes but even aside from that he was phenomenal for us. we're still feeling the brunt of his exit and its painful knowing that we would probably be in a much better position if we could rely on him as a striker.
6. bro's only been gone for a short while but mesut ozil. this man made me so proud as a muslim because of how well he did everywhere he went. i think what hurts most about his retirement is just the sequence of events that lead to it. knowing that he put his heart and soul into playing for germany and the treatment he received when they were underperforming broke my heart. he deserved so much better and i always wonder what could have been if he'd been cut the same slack other players had been given.
7. there r a few players in contention for this so i'll give you the top 2.
Hakim Ziyech because this guy could make 10 key passes a match and he'd still be seen as the worst player on the pitch by chelsea fanboys. somehow he's always to blame. the man was spectacular for ajax and he's spectacular for morocco. i dont understand how when he doesnt perform at chelsea, he's the one at fault. how when the whole team underperforms, he's the one that gets singled out. he deserves better than the hand he's been dealt. he's a star, he's proven that time and time again.
the other one is gavi. similar to hakim, its just the disproportionate level of hatred he receives genuinely makes my blood boil. this guy is 18 years old, its his first full season of professional football. yet somehow his weaknesses are viewed as complete deal breakers from the get go. he constantly being compared to players who are many years older than him as if thats any evidence that he doesnt deserve to be where he is. i genuinely cannot imagine how hard things must be for him because this level of scrutiny simply isnt fair. he's got at least 16 years of playing left in him. he's got a good working attitude and will probably be able to play for much longer than that. he's a work-in-progress and people r treating him like he's 35 years old and done nothing.

Comics Read 08/13- 20/2023
Over this period I of time I read Rockstars written by Joe Harris, art by Megan Hutchison-Cates, colors by Kelly Fitzpatrick, designer Tom Muller, letters by Michael David Thomas, and edited by Shawna Gor. The edition I read this time was Rockstars The Complete Series as published by Vault. Years ago I read the first arc, “Nativity in Black Light”, in the trade paperback as published by Image Comics. I intended to get the second arc’s trade paperback, “Children of the Beast” as published by Image, but somehow missed it. Anyway, I am glad I got this edition as it encouraged by to reread the first arc which I otherwise remember next to nothing about. The page I scanned to illustrate this post, with its myriad references to our world’s rock ’n’ roll icons and legends may be the part I most clearly remember.
A quick search on my tags reveals I have never written about Joe Harris on this blog. This really emphasizes how long it has been since I have read any of his work. I have been writing about all the comic books I read for the better part of four years, and even though I was reading most of what he wrote for a while, none of it was during this time! I first became aware of Harris around 2013, when I was preparing to attend my first New York Comic Con. I went to a signing at Forbidden Planet the same week to get some comic books signed. There were four comic makers there. For some reason I now only remember the two that I was not there to see. One of them was Joe Harris, who at the time was primarily promoting his The X-Files season 10 comics (before the revival meant there was a tenth season of the television show). I have a complicated relationship to TXF. It was the first show I really obsessed over, it’s the first I feel angrily disillusioned over. I’m writing something about it in my other Tumblr for the anniversary. That night, I bought the trade paperback Great Pacific, one of Harris’s other creator owned comics. I liked it a lot and started following his creator owned output. I bring this up because the lead characters of Rockstars, Jackie and Dorothy, have a Mulder and Scully-esque dynamic. Jackie is driven by his family history and seeks answers through mystical uses of cards. Dorothy is a journalist, and seeks answers that she can safely publish. These two character arcs were not really developed enough either of them, but Jackie gets to a more interesting crossroads.
More directly relevant to this book, between reading the first arc the first time and reading this all now, I have steeped myself more in rock ’n’ roll legends than I was doing the first time around. Among other things I watched Brian De Palma’s The Phantom of the Paradise which reminded me about how often Faustian bargains and early death have been staples of rock legends since nearly the beginning. The plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and “The Big Bopper” J. P. Richardson pretty much solidified this. This event is included in Rockstars, though the way is in questionable taste. (Coincidentally, that plane crash was also important to the plot of a famous episode of TXF.)
The plot of Rockstars, starts with investigating the mysterious deaths of a couple of groupies decades apart. There are ghost gangs of the groupies interfering with the investigation and they tend to be herald by the wrong lyrics of famous songs. The deaths of the murdered ones are related to demonic champions of the bands. Each arc covers a different demon in relation to a different band. The first band is an arch-typical second wave British invasion bad from the 1970s, and the second is arch-typical early hair metal band from the 1980s. I am more familiar with the former than the latter, despite actually living through parts of the 1980s. The plot didn’t really add up for me. But I love a lot of the details in the drawings, nods to famous theories and art. I also am touched by the concept of how generations are bonded because we each go through the same cycles of cultural events. I just wish that Dorothy’s character design wasn’t so close to some of the groupies in flashbacks or ghost form. It was needlessly confusing.
I feel like, of what I have read, the best comic books about loving music are Kieron Gillan and Jamie McKelvie’s Phonogram and The Wicked + The Divine. This isn’t like either of those, and that is a good thing. For all it’s flaws, I wish there was more of it.

Footy RPF Fictober ~Day 1~
⚽︎⋆𐙚First game together/against each other𐙚⋆⚽︎
Rating:G | Wordcount:614 | Pairing:Neuller | Prompts
Notes: IT'S HERE I'm so happy to start this little project 🤭 Hope you like it and the collection/collections in AO3 will be posted soon! Fic under the cut.
It was a bit of the same, and he didn't mean it in a derogatory way, or to belittle the effort that both the coach and his teammates were putting in. But even with his limited experience, Thomas found the pre-match speech quite similar to the others he had heard, even in his teenage days.
He found it somewhat amusing, smiled to himself and nodded enthusiastically. It was curious how his concentration was in a completely different place. As if absorbed in his thoughts was the newly called-up goalkeeper on the other side of the locker room. He hadn't shared much with him yet, other than a couple of handshakes before the games Bayern played against Schalke that season.
Obviously, the countless plays he had tried to score against him didn't count, at these times it was more the effort Thomas put into finishing his plays and scoring than he could put into Manuel's good looks. At least now, with a little more calm, Thomas could detail his characteristics. He always looked so focused, always with his goal in mind. It was no wonder that he was also called up to the national team to fill such an iconic and looked-upon position as the Germany NT goalkeeper.
He watched as Manuel, with the same look, directed his serene green eyes at correctly adjusting the goalkeeper's gloves. But perhaps he watched him for too long because as if he had noticed, Manuel looked back at him with curiosity.
Thomas was not one to blush or get nervous, but it was difficult not to feel something with Manuel watching him without saying a word. Thomas smiled, as usual, giving an air of complicity to the atmosphere between them. Manuel smiled softly back, without taking his gaze off him. It was as if Manuel had also been waiting to detail him better. His dishevelled light brown hair, his eyes that he had not yet noticed were two-tone, his sharp but warm smile. Even with the few years that the goalkeeper was older than Thomas, it was like seeing a child, someone who always gave that exciting but welcoming energy.
In Thomas' mind, Manuel was another story. He was like someone he could trust, he gave an air of confidence and security, of warmth. He tried to look away a couple of times only to look back at Manuel. Even though they had both been called up to the team within a few days of each other, Thomas felt like he belonged there. He wondered if Manuel felt the same way. Kahn’s shoes were pretty big ones to fill, and well, even though they were rivals in the Bundesliga, on the national team Thomas would do his best to support the new goalie whether on or off the pitch. And as much as he was starting to like him, it was going to be an easy and rather enjoyable task.
In the background, he could hear the coach still talking about a couple of things that he hadn’t paid attention to since he was immersed in Manuel’s gaze. He noticed how the others stood up and did the same, assuming that they had finished the preparations and it was time to go out on the field. But both Manuel and Thomas were focused on each other. Thomas took the initiative, took a few steps towards Manuel and extended his hand, which Manuel took with a somewhat clumsy movement by the huge goalkeeper's glove, which made them both laugh slightly.
“You’ll do great!” Thomas said enthusiastically. To which Manuel's expression softened… This Muller guy and himself could probably get along well in the future, he thought with a smile.
