I find Hughie's list of his top three musicians incredibly fascinating. Also just the fact that he refers to them as musicians and not artists, like, it's just- why use that term? It's so outdated in todays vernacular and I don't get the feeling he's trying to be a certain type of way or annoying by saying musicians bc a) that's just not his personality at all and b) bc when he discusses it with butcher, he's incredibly stressed and using his top artists as a way to prove that he is incapable of infiltrating Vought.
But anyway, onto the actual list. 1. James Taylor. What the fuck. Whose top artist has ever been James Taylor, no offence to Mr Taylor but I don't feel like he's an artist who is many people's number one.
2. Simon and Garfunkel. I'm totally biased when I say that this is a bang up choice bc I think they slap, but again, still, an interesting choice.
3. Billy Joel. The most important and iconic choice in terms of Hughie's character and how associated with each other they become- and yet, he is third on Hughie's list. He's not even second, when he has a poster of him on his room (potentially on his ceiling if Robin's quip about "staring up at that dumb Billy Joel poster" is anything to go on). He listens to "You're Only Human" incessantly when he's in an extremely dark place mentally in season 2, Pressure, Only the Good Die Young and Uptown Girl are played in his scenes in the Season 2 opening, closing and Season three opening respectively.
So, why is Billy Joel number three, when clearly he is far more important to Hughie than James Taylor or Simon and Garfunkel, neither of whom we have seen him listen to or make reference to again (besides the t-shirts he wears and he doesn't even wear a Simon and Garfunkel t-shirt- and yes I know because I made a list and if it turns out that he actually did I am setting myself on fire)?
I think it all comes back to Hughie's mom. She is the reason he ever started listening to Billy Joel in the first place, his fondest memories (he doesn't say they're his fondest, but they seem to be pretty important to him) are of her and him dancing to Billy Joel. Not moments after telling Annie this does he follow it up by saying "I don’t wanna be like her."
Hughie can't help but love his mom. He can't help but love Billy Joel, even though the association with his mom is so strong; yet he tries to distance himself from both. He both clings and pushes them to him and away from him with equal measure. Perhaps him adding on two other artists before Billy Joel is his way of distancing himself from that association, even though he can't deny that he does greatly enjoy Billy Joel's music.
It's fascinating because it doesn't matter, at least not on the surface. Even when conversing with someone who, at that point, is a complete stranger to Hughie, he still has this need to distance himself from something so heavily associated with his mom. I think it's one of the many instances in the show that reveal just how deeply Hughie's mom abandoning him affected him. Even though he barely talks about her, even though she's only being introduced as an actual character in season four, her influence on him and the effects of what she did to him can be seen rippling throughout even the smallest aspects of Hughie's character.

UNLESS it's dramione i HATE dramione oh my god get it away. genuinely nothing against anyone who ships it but i won't follow you if it's actively on your account because it honestly makes me tweak out😭

Thoughts on what Law said about Annie Leibovitz?
I wholeheartedly agree with the interviewer. Choosing her for that cover was extremely risky. Annie Leibovitz has some very iconic photographs and editorials under her belt but in the words of Janet Jackson “What have you done for me lately???”
Law wanted to work with her for the nostalgia of it all and more for having his name on the masthead next to Annie Leibovitz’s instead of the potential outcome of those photographs. IMHO it should have been Miesel shooting Zendaya instead.
Also TBH I haven’t cared for any of Annie Leibovitz’s work since she made Lebron James look like King Kong on the cover of Vogue.

Twin Peaks: *is about how a town turned a blind eye to the harm and abuse a high middle class teenage girl was going through because of how powerful her father was, and how they all felt guilty when she died and pretended they tried to help her when most of them didn't or couldn't do enough about it, all of them having different versions of her. the show is also about how the extremely traumatized agent who's sent to solve her crime wasn't mean to join the fbi and how he constantly runs away from his own problems refuses to acknowledge his traumas and problems which is what ends up ruining his life and the life of the dead protagonist. it's about the evil that men do, taking responsibility for your actions and protecting victims of sexual abuse and help them heal before it's too late. it was never about a battle between good guys vs bad guys. also in case you missed it sexual violence and abuse against young girls and women is bad*
Some people: aren't cooper and audrey such a cute couple? isn't laura palmer such a female rage icon? and btw dale cooper is as bad as all the abusers in the show including bob (i didn't read his book i didn't listen to his tapes), albert is a nazi because he was mean to harry and coop (although his last name is jewish and he explicitly states in the show he's against discrimination), james sucks (because he's boring and not because of the bad writing and acting on his character), annie sucks because she ruined our otp and her writing is terrible and we'll pretend john justice wheeler doesn't already fill out the space for the worst written character on the show, donna is such a bitch because her actress ruined cooper/audrey (she didn't and the actors aren't their characters), josie is so mean (although she's also a victim to many people and the racist subplot they did of her in s2 was terrible and icky) and awful to harry, laura is such a femme fatale that i will now draw an oversexualized version of her corpse (she was sixteen when she died and her birth date got changed by dr.jacoby in the secret history of twin peaks so he could get away with raping her btw), laura is also as yucky as bob like cooper except she's a sexy incubus who wants to destroy his life and yes if daddy lynch didn't take part (or his name isn't slapped in the front) in this extension of the canon that adds to the story or contradicts my theories i will not listen to/read it even if mark frost (who co-created the show and added a few of the great things about the show), and his brother scott, sheryl lee, jennifer lynch, kyle maclachlan and the writers of the show are involved ❤️

Misery (1990)
Tumblr media
Misery easily ranks as one of the best Stephen King Novel film adaptations. When we look at The Lawnmower Man and Sleepwalkers, that might not sound like much but this is a terrific thriller with high levels of suspense and a showstopping performance by Kathy Bates.
Famed novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) has recently sent the last of his successful Misery Chastain Victorian romance novels to the publisher. He is moving on to the next phase of his writing career when he crashes his car during a blizzard. A nurse named Annie Wilkes (Bates) finds him and brings him to her remote home, where she uses her medical skills to help him recuperate. When she discovers that her beloved Misery has been killed in Sheldon’s latest book, she insists he fixes his mistake and refuses to let him leave until he does.
You don’t have to read any behind-the-scenes material to guess where Stephen King got the inspiration for the novel (adapted for the screen by William Goldman). Even if you’re not an author or a creative professional, you can imagine yourself in this scenario. Sheldon is of course grateful to have been rescued. He's even flattered by the way Wilkes gushes over his work. The funny thing is that he’s already moved on from Misery. In fact, he holds a certain contempt for the series, which introduces immediate tension in the situation. You know and he knows, that eventually, Wilkes will learn what he has done. Even before she does, Sheldon could slip. When the truth comes out… how will Wilkes react? Even early on, there are hints that something about her is off. She’s just… too cheery. Something about her demeanor makes you think “This woman is acting all nice and everything, but I need to get away from her”. As time passes, Sheldon’s strength returns but the longer he stays, the closer Wilkes gets to the final chapter of his book. The suspense keeps building until we finally see Wilkes’ true side. Then, this becomes a whole other kind of movie.
It turns out Wilkes is part time bomb and part cuckoo clock. Sheldon needs to escape her care. You feel his terror but as a member of the audience, you're also excited. These kinds of movies draw you in because you do the same thing Sheldon does: you look around the room, looking for tools he can use to escape. Whenever an attempt fails, you're disappointed on his behalf… but inside, you’re also glad because it means the cycle gets to start over.
Bates’ portrayal of Annie Wilkes is one of the all-time great movie villains. The obsessive fan feels so real you can’t imagine anyone else taking on the role. Her voice and mannerisms when she’s calm, the way her temper explodes, the “office” she puts together so Sheldon can work and the changes in her body language/voice when she drops the niceties make her iconic. The memorable skin-crawling scenes that come as her obsession grows instantly burn themselves into your head (the Blu-ray I watched has the most unsettling scene - you know which one - on the cover).
Bates is not the only great performer in the film, however. James Caan makes Sheldon even more relatable than the script and setup already do. You can always tell what he’s thinking and how he’s feeling. If you were in Sheldon's shoes, you’d be doing the exact same thing as him. He's a quick-thinking protagonist, making the ordeal he goes through even more satisfying (and horrifying) to watch. I also want to give a shout-out to Richard Farnsworth as Sheriff Buster and to Frances Sternhagen as his wife and deputy, Virginia. The side story of the authorities searching for Sheldon is essential to the film’s success. Cutting to those scenes gives you some much-needed breathers and cranks up the intensity as the Sheriff gets closer to cracking the case but Buster and Virginia are great characters. Stephen King’s said that many (if not all) of his stories are set in the same universe. I know it’s been more than 30 years so it’s impossible, but it would’ve been awesome if more adaptations featured Buster and Virginia. Not as the main characters, but in fun cameos that got to show off their relationship.
It took me way longer than it should’ve to sit down and watch Misery. The film makes great use of its premise. The performances are phenomenal. It’s got memorable characters and scenes. It’s just a great film, period. (On Blu-ray, May 17, 2024)

Today’s compilation:
Now That's What I Call Music! 2 1999 Alternative Rock / Adult Contemporary / Pop-Rock / Teen Pop / Pop / R&B / Hip Hop
Back with another dispatch from the early run of the US' Now That's What I Call Music!, with the second installment from this gargantuan, neverending series. Take yourself all the way back to 1999 with this great ad for it!
youtube
Now, I definitely have not kept up with Now for a long while, but as a series that's known for repackaging huge chart hits on CD, I think this might have been its most unique volume of all, because a lot of these songs did not end up charting all that high in the US—at least not on Billboard's Hot 100—and a number of them actually fared far, far better in the UK, which is where Now originated from, with its first ever release dating back to 1983.
A prime example here is Robbie Williams' great pop hit, "Millennium." Williams is regarded as an absolute pop superstar in the UK, but he's only charted twice as a solo act on the Hot 100 in the US, and both of those singles have failed to reach the top 50. This one, which pairs recreated dreamy strings from James Bond's You Only Live Twice theme with a hip hop-type backbeat, only made it to #78, but it was a #1 hit across the pond! And I think outside of all that well-made, Swedish-produced teen pop/boy band fare, this one very well might've been the best pure pop song of the entire late 90s. The use of those epic Bond strings smacks of The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" too, which certainly suggests that there's something about Brits and those damn strings.
And another #1 UK smash that didn't do nearly as well in the States was Fatboy Slim's irresistible big beat summer classic, "Praise You," which sampled from a lot of different places, including a Disney disco record, a JBL test album to get those iconic keys, Steve Miller Band, the Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids theme, and a song by Chicagoan Camille Yarbrough called "Take Yo' Praise," from which Fatboy Slim took the lyrics. There was a whole undercurrent of this big beat stuff that was coursing through a lot of our commercials and movie and video game soundtracks back then, led by acts like Fatboy Slim himself, the Chemical Brothers, and The Prodigy. But it never went super mainstream like it did in the UK. Fatboy Slim's singles only charted twice in the US on the Hot 100, and "Praise You" was the best-performing one, making it to #36.
By the way, I have a really killer turn-of-the-millennium-type summer playlist on Spotify that has a bunch of songs like "Praise You" on it. It's called "An Endless Capri Sun or Juicyfruit or Starburst Commercial From Like the Summer of 2002," which will hopefully give you an idea of the type of vibe that I was trying to channel with it. God, I love that sun-shining big beat stuff!
And color me surprised to hear Jay-Z on here, because until 2001, Now pretty much seemed to purposely go out of its way to avoid hip hop altogether. I guess it makes sense though, since the music usually has explicit themes, and these albums are typically targeted at kids. But they really just couldn't help themselves when it came to Jay-Z's first real, true breakout hit in "Hard Knock Life" here. Mark the 45 King's novel sampling of the song of the same name from Annie made this one feel very kid-friendly and fun to sing along to, despite the numerous lyrics that had to be censored from it to get it on radio in the first place. Funny, though, that in a very American 90s way, and in a pre-onset-of-mass-shootings era, that they'd let a line like, "when my situation ain't improvin', I'm tryina’ murder everything movin'" slide through without any kind of edit. I mean, if they're playing this song on radio now, I'm thinking that that line gets hit with some kind of sound effect. But it didn't in '98 and '99, and that feels pretty remarkable in hindsight, especially since hip hop verses were constantly censored on radio, MTV, and BET, so much so that some songs felt like the track was getting jammed up at certain points 😅.
So, honestly, this might be the most unique release that Now ever put out in its main US series, as it seems to be the volume that's the least concerned with overall chart success among its selections. It still comes with some staples you'd expect, from Britney's "...Baby One More Time" to Everclear's "Father of Mine," effectively running a small radio gamut from the poppiest of pop to the most banal of alternarock, but acts like Robbie Williams, Fatboy Slim, Garbage, and even Cake are on here, and as an entity that's chiefly known for presenting the *biggest* pop hits of the day, those are probably some names that you wouldn't typically expect to be on a US release from this series.
And it closes with that odd Baz Luhrmann spoken-word advice column about wearing sunscreen that you might have totally forgotten about too. That one's probably the most ephemeral song of all on here; the ultimate entry in any sort of 'only 90s kids will remember these songs' type of list.
Hopefully you get a sweet memory-jogged nostalgia rush from some of these other songs I didn’t make mention of.
Highlights:
Britney Spears - "...Baby One More Time" New Radicals - "You Get What You Give" Robbie Williams - "Millennium" Semisonic - "Closing Time" U2 - "The Sweetest Thing (Single Mix)" Fatboy Slim - "Praise You (Radio Edit)" Garbage - "I Think I'm Paranoid" Cake - "Never There" 98° - "Because of You" Mýa & Blackstreet feat. Ma$e & Blinky Blink - "Take Me There" Everclear - "Father of Mine" Sublime - "What I Got (Clean Version)" Backstreet Boys - "I'll Never Break Your Heart" Jay-Z - "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) (Edit)" Baz Luhrmann - "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) (Edit)"

I loved the looks you did for Hallie, Annie, and Elizabeth James from the Parent Trap (and all of your other looks, great for inspiration!) That is all! (Though I wouldn't say no to a Meredith Blake lookbook lol, her looks are iconic) Thank you for sharing!
Hi gorgeous, thank you so much!
I actually did make Meredith y'know, but I feel like I haven't done her justice yet. There is something that doesn't feel like her. But maybe once I do finish her and am happy with the result, I will do a lookbook recreating her outfits from the film!

come what(ever) may - stone sour
took me by surprise seeing this at my local book/physical media store. idk if anyone remembers google play music but that was my everything in middleschool (along w pandora bc it was the only site not blocked whenever id listen to music) and i remember being in the "slipknot"/"nu-metal" "radio" stations pretty often, and stone sour popping up every now and then. obvs as a little angsty rat i didn't always care to listen to their more ~melodic~ or acoustic stuff, so i ended up skipping their songs in favor of slipknot + the like. didn't even know corey & james were in stone sour as well! didn't even know who corey and james were. different times i spose
some of these songs i do remember from my tweens/recently watching corey's live in london show (bc thats just a rite of passage for me isnt it) and hearing them on my cd put me in 2007. sure i wouldve been like four. but still. the composition of these tracks alone just puts you there. its like a wormhole through a higher grade nickelback discography. and i mean that in the most respectful way possible. if you can imagine.
standout tracks are obviously through glass, cardiff, 1st person, and hell & consequences. i didn't get a chance to really pay attention to the lyricism this listen but i just love hearing corey sing. who doesn't. the man literally made a career out of it. wild. i know there's jokes to be made about stone sour being slipknot: 2 (very justified btw, what with the acoustics paired with the industrial/death metal tones we're so used to hearing from them in slipknot) but now i get why they were able to reach icon status in the aughts. i always say there are bands that define a genre to a time and bands that are a product of a genre in their time, and stone sour (to me, at least) is definitely the latter. however, it isn't a bad thing here ? like you'd expect any band that shares similarities with nickelback or creed or godsmack or any beloved pioneers in buttrock to be the same degree of "corny turned cult classic" but there's something about stone sour that cements them as just a genuinely good rock band, period.
and dont even get me started on the artwork & art direction on this foldable, it took a lot of strength to not just scan and post everything. whoever was in charge of cd foldable artwork from 2006-2010 needs to have their work studied in the same way we used to run over picasso's greatest hits in art history class. it's like the entire spread was printed on acid washed jeans. it's like no matter where i look there is an embossed edge. it's like even the png clouds above them have a tactile texture as i turn and read lyrics. it's straight up male casual wear section in the department store-green city. it's so cinematic that way. also i wonder if the album's title itself is a reference to annie? i know corey's into theater, and the whole "come what may" thing is like a lyric or phrase from something else. feel free to correct me though 🫶
im glad i gave my 12 year old self a new listen today, and as always im glad to be able to share my listens and findings to the 2 people interested in my cd tag.

*Spoilers for The Simpsons and Family Guy*
Simpsons: Who shot Mr. Burns?
Family Guy: And Then There Were Fewer
South Park needs to do a murder mystery episode. Many shows do them, but I’m just going to use The Simpsons and Family Guy for examples.
The Simpsons has the ever-famous “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” Duology, ending season 6 and beginning season 7 with two episodes centered around the mystery. While not technically a “Murder Mystery” it’s still an iconic whodunnit that sees the entire town turn against each other as the try and figure out the culprit. The ending is kind of a cop-out, when the shooter is revealed to be Maggie Simpson and she is not charged with a crime. (Originally the shooter was going to be Barney, and he was actually going to go to jail for a season or so). It’s still full of a lot of genuinely good clues, such as every clock reading 3:00 to hint at how the sun dial is supposed to be read.
Family Guy has “And Then There Were Fewer” which was the premiere for season 9. This 50 minute episode of the show contains no cutaway gags, and is a true to form murder mystery. We see the actual deaths of a few characters, including a character that was introduced in the episode (Stephanie), James Woods (who was later brought back, which is lame), Muriel Goldman, Derek Wilcox, Pricilla, and finally the killer, Diane Simmons, is shot after a showdown with Lois Griffin. This is my favorite episode of the show, honestly. Even though they brought back James Woods, every other character named remains dead throughout the show, and there are even a couple mentions of their deaths throughout, especially for Muriel and Diane. Diane Simmons was an especially prominent character throughout the first eight seasons, appearing as the co-anchor to Tom Tucker (yes that’s his name) every time the news was played, which is frequently. They give her character motivations for wanting to kill James Woods and frame Tom Tucker for it, which she reveals to Lois in a very dramatic scene towards the end of the episode. Honestly even if you don’t like Family Guy this is a pretty solid episode, aside from a few really lame jokes.
South Park, ever starved for ideas, could totally do something like this. It’s not like it doesn’t fit the tone of the show, and it’s not like we don’t have any side character to spare. It could also work fairly well as a weird dream episode or something, and then they could do it with the main class of 4th graders. I would hope they leaned more towards the Family Guy episode, and it seems like that would fit the show more. The one problem is that the cast of South Park is mostly children, but there are definitely side adults that we could lose, and they’ve never been above killing some kids.
Maybe we could drop some characters we haven’t seen in awhile, like Ned, and then move up to character we see often but wouldn’t really be missed. Someone irl (@unoficial-trader-joes) suggested the mayor and I think that could work. We could also drop some less-popular 4th grade characters, like Annie Knitts, Red McArthur, and if we’re feeling really wild maybe Scott Malkinson or DogPoo Petuski. It would be a fun time, I think.
(Also the Killer should be Kenny, and he’s killed in a final showdown like in the Family Guy episode, but then he just comes back because he’s Kenny)
