Just finished watching the last season of "The umbrella academy" and while I didn't like the season overall (I know Netflix is the one to blame), I liked the ending and I liked Five and Lila's storyline. The show isn't about romance, it isn't about happy endings and they're all so messy, what did you expect? To me it just made sense.

Jean and Gene truly were the saving grace of this season. Classic quirky umbrella academy, random dance scene to a Cher song, leaders of a cult (???), bickering Southern couple, straight up murdering a guy for a dvd
Iconic

Since we all know how much of a shitshow umbrella academy s4 was, let's revisit the good old days. Here's my reaction to ep1 s1, which I haven't seen in like 5 years:
We're starting off strong with the sudden pregnancy scene: this is how you get the viewer's attention
Cunty shot of Reggie walking with the seven nannies and the seven baby carriers
Viktor playing the violin while all the other characters are introduced 10/10 stunning no notes
Rehab worker saying "We'll see you soon Klaus" and him immediatly overdosing and being reanimated in the ambulance. Now we know he probably just came back to life by himself!
"You got big, Luther! What's your secret, protein shakes?"
Pogo!!! I missed you, you ape butler!
Baby Viktor leaving sandwitches for Five 🥺🥺🥺
Klaus-Allison alliance going strong since the beginning I see
"Did you see Diego?" "Yeah, with that stupid outfit" "Do you think he wears that thing in the shower?" I love siblings being siblings
Ok I had forgotten about the Allison and Luther thing. Maybe it wasn't ALL great.
"Dad, could you just stop playing tennis with Hitler for a moment and take a quick call?"
"Ok, sorry, I'm just gonna go murder mom, I'll be right back"
Klaus is seriously the best
Bank robbery flashback!!!
"Guns are for sissies! Real men throw knives!"
"That's one badass StApLeR" god I miss five's voice cracks so much
*Ben covered in blood* "Can we go home now?"
Back to the present with Klaus spilling Reggie's ashes lmao
I THINK WE'RE ALONE NOW AKA BEST DANCE SCENE IN TV SHOW HISTORY
No seriously Diego absolutely killing it, Luther doing the hand-krabs, Klaus dancing with the urne
And then boom! Five is back! Honestly iconic entrance
Also Klaus trying to stop a temporal anomaly with a fire extinguisher whyyyy lmao
Five interrupting his speech about the future to look Klaus up and down and 100% seriously say "nice dress"
Klaus responding with "ah, danke"
"That makes no sense" "well, it would if you were smarter"
Also unrelated but Viktor being such a shy wallflower in s1... he's come such a long way!!!
Luther throwing reggie's ashes on the ground "probably would have been better with some wind"
Luther and Diego beating the crap out each other. Viktor: "stop it!" Klaus: "hit him!"
Also Klaus trying to protect Five and him having none of it, too cute
"An entire square block, 42 bedrooms, 19 bathrooms, and not one single drop of coffee" "dad hated caffeine" "well he hated children too, and he had plenty of us!"
"Alright, guess I'll see you guys in another ten years, when Pogo dies" Diego please 💀💀
"You know, every time I close my eyes I see a diarrheatic hyppo about to shit on my face" this was robert sheehan improvising and honestly what the fuck how does someone even come up with that
The Istanbul was constantinople fight was honestly art. This was really the moment I knew I would love this show with all of my heart. Also masterful way to show exactly who Five is in just a couple of minutes
BEN!!! I MISS OG BEN SO MUCH!!! He was baby
Five going to Viktor when he needed help. Honestly we should have gotten more of them being besties it was so good
"The world ends in eight days, and I have no idea how to stop it" and that's how you end a first episode! I'm hooked! Except I'm not cause I know how it ends 🫠
Well this is it. This show was honestly so good in the beginning. I have no clue what happened. At least we'll always have season 1.

Rhythm of Our Hearts

Synopsis: you, a small-town choreographer, whose life changes when global K-pop star Lisa asks for collaboration, sparking a journey of dance, dreams, and unexpected romance.
Word count:1.9K
This was requested and I hope I did okay, so if any of you guys do have requests of the girls , please do let me know and I promise I will try my best.

The world of dance was all you had ever known. From the time you could walk, your feet had found rhythm and movement as naturally as most children discover speech. Growing up in a small town, you never imagined that your passion for choreography would lead you to the heights of fame and success. Your journey had been a whirlwind of hard work, dedication, and a bit of luck. But it wasn't until the fateful day when Lisa Manoban, the global K-pop sensation, walked into your life that everything changed.
— — — — —
The crisp autumn morning in Los Angeles was beautiful. The sun had just begun to rise, casting a golden hue over the city. You had an early call at the studio, a place that had become your second home. Your name was renowned in the dance world, and you had worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. But today, you had no idea what was in store for you.
As you arrived at the studio, coffee in hand, and greeted your team, you were prepping for a new project when you received an unexpected phone call. It was Sean Bankhead, a fellow choreographer and one of your closest friends.
"Hey, I need you to come to Studio B. Now," Sean's voice had an urgency that piqued your curiosity.
You made your way to Studio B, wondering what could be so important. As you entered, you were greeted by the sight of Lisa Manoban, the superstar from BLACKPINK. She was even more stunning in person, her presence commanding the room effortlessly.
"Hey," Sean said, a wide grin on his face. "Meet Lisa. She has a special request."
Lisa turned towards you, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I've been a huge fan of your work," she began, her voice as smooth as silk. "I'm working on a new solo project, and I was hoping you could choreograph the dance for my song 'Rockstar.'"
You were taken aback. Choreographing for Lisa was an opportunity of a lifetime. "Of course, I'd be honored," you replied, trying to keep your composure.
Lisa's smile widened. "Great! I'm so excited to work with you. Let's make something unforgettable."
As the days passed, you and Lisa spent countless hours in the studio, perfecting every move, every beat. She was incredibly talented and dedicated, and your sessions were a blend of hard work and creativity. You began to develop a rhythm, not just in your dance but in your interactions.
Between breaks, you'd sit and chat, sharing stories about your lives, your struggles, and your dreams. You learned about her journey from Thailand to becoming a global icon, and she listened intently as you recounted your path from a small-town dancer to a renowned choreographer.
— — — — —
Your late-night sessions became a routine. The studio, usually bustling with activity, would grow quiet as the night deepened. It was during these moments that your bond began to grow stronger.
One night, after a particularly grueling practice, you sat on the floor, exhausted but exhilarated.
"You know," Lisa said, looking thoughtful, "I've always felt like an outsider, even in the industry. It's hard to find people who understand."
You nodded, understanding the feeling all too well. "I get it. Sometimes, even in a room full of people, you can feel completely alone."
You talked about your dreams, both fulfilled and unfulfilled. Lisa spoke about her desire to explore different aspects of her artistry, beyond just music. You shared your aspirations of starting a dance academy for underprivileged kids, to give them the opportunities you never had.
"Maybe one day, we can combine our passions," Lisa suggested, her eyes lighting up with the idea. "Imagine a school that nurtures both dance and music."
You smiled at the thought. "That would be amazing. We could change so many lives."
Unbeknownst to you, Sean had been observing your growing closeness. One afternoon, as you took a break, he pulled you aside.
"You and Lisa seem to be getting along pretty well," he remarked, a teasing glint in his eye.
You shrugged, trying to play it cool. "She's great to work with. We have a lot in common."
Sean raised an eyebrow. "Just work, huh? Well, whatever it is, I'm happy for you. It's good to see you both so inspired."
— — — — —
One rainy afternoon, as you sat by the window watching the raindrops dance on the glass, Lisa opened up about her past. She spoke about her childhood in Thailand, the struggles her family faced, and the sacrifices they made for her to pursue her dreams.
"I was just a kid with big dreams," she said, her voice tinged with nostalgia. "Leaving home at such a young age was tough, but I knew I had to do it."
Her story resonated with you deeply. You admired her resilience and determination. "You're incredibly strong, Lisa. Your journey is truly inspiring."
Lisa turned the conversation towards you, curious about your own story. You recounted your early years, growing up in a small town where opportunities were scarce. Dance had always been your escape, your way of expressing emotions you couldn't put into words.
"My parents didn't understand my passion," you confessed. "They wanted me to follow a more traditional path. But I couldn't give up on my dreams."
Lisa reached out, placing a comforting hand on yours. "And look where you are now. You're living your dream."
— — — — —
As your project progressed, so did your connection. There were moments when your hands would brush accidentally, sending a jolt of electricity through you. Your conversations grew more personal, your laughter more genuine.
One evening, after a particularly intense rehearsal, you found yourselves alone in the studio. The air was thick with unspoken words and unsaid emotions.
"Do you ever wonder what life would be like if we hadn't followed our dreams?" Lisa asked, breaking the silence.
You nodded. "Sometimes. But then I realize that every choice we made led us to this moment. And I wouldn't trade it for anything."
Sean, ever the perceptive friend, noticed the subtle changes between you. One day, as you took a break outside the studio, he brought it up.
"You know, it's rare to find someone who truly understands you," he said, looking at you meaningfully. "Don't let that go."
You knew he was right. Lisa and you shared a bond that went beyond your professional relationship. It was something special, something worth exploring.
— — — — —
Your choreography for 'Rockstar' was finally coming together. It was a fusion of powerful moves and graceful transitions, a perfect reflection of Lisa's dynamic personality. You spent long hours perfecting every detail, ensuring it was flawless.
One evening, as you practiced a particularly challenging sequence, Lisa stumbled and fell into your arms. Your eyes met, and for a moment, the world seemed to stand still.
"Are you okay?" you asked, your voice barely above a whisper.
Lisa nodded, her breath coming in short gasps. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... lost my balance."
As you sat on the floor, catching your breath, Lisa looked at you with a seriousness you hadn't seen before.
"There's something I need to tell you," she began, her voice trembling slightly. "These past few weeks, working with you... I've felt something I haven't felt in a long time."
Your heart pounded in your chest as you waited for her to continue.
"I don't know where this is going, but I know that I want to find out," she said, her eyes searching yours for a response.
You took a deep breath, your mind racing. "Lisa, I feel the same way. This connection between us... it's special. And I don't want to ignore it."
— — — — —
With your feelings out in the open, Lisa and you decided to take things slow. You continued working on the choreography, but now there was an added layer of excitement and anticipation in your interactions.
You started spending more time together outside of the studio, exploring the city, sharing meals, and enjoying each other's company. Your bond grew stronger with each passing day, and you knew that this was just the beginning of something beautiful.
Sean, ever the supportive friend, was thrilled to see you both happy. "You two deserve this," he said one evening as you sat in his living room, discussing your progress. "It's rare to find a connection like this. Don't take it for granted."
His words resonated with you, and you vowed to cherish every moment with Lisa.
The day of the music video shoot finally arrived. The set was buzzing with energy as the crew prepared for the shoot. Lisa and you went over the choreography one last time, ensuring everything was perfect.
As the cameras rolled, you moved together seamlessly, your bodies in perfect harmony. The dance was a powerful expression of your journey, your struggles, and your triumphs.
— — — — —
The music video was a massive success, garnering millions of views within hours of its release. Fans and critics alike praised the choreography, and Lisa's performance was hailed as one of her best.
But beyond the accolades and the applause, what mattered most to you was the bond you had formed with Lisa. You had created something beautiful together, and your connection went far beyond the dance floor.
With the project behind you, Lisa and you began to explore new horizons. You started working on your dream of opening a dance and music academy, a place where young talents could nurture their skills and pursue their dreams.
Your journey was just beginning, and you knew that whatever the future held, you would face it together.
— — — — —
"We did it," Lisa said softly, her eyes shimmering with pride as she looked at you.
You smiled, squeezing her hand gently. "Yeah, we did. And it's just the beginning."
The air between you was charged with a mix of accomplishment and something more, something that had been growing between you with each passing day.
"I couldn't have asked for a better partner," Lisa admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Me neither," you replied, your gaze locked with hers. In that moment, the world outside seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of you in the quiet embrace of the studio.
Lisa's hand reached up to brush a strand of hair from your face, her touch gentle yet electrifying. "Y/n..." she murmured, her breath mingling with yours.
You leaned in closer, feeling the warmth of her breath on your lips. "Lisa," you whispered back, your heart racing.
And then, without another word, your lips met in a kiss that spoke volumes of the unspoken feelings between you. It was a kiss filled with passion and tenderness, a culmination of the bond you had forged through sweat, laughter, and shared dreams.
Time seemed to stand still as you kissed, each moment etching itself into your memory. The studio around you faded into insignificance, leaving only the sensation of Lisa's lips against yours, the softness of her touch, and the overwhelming certainty that this was where you belonged.
When you finally pulled back, a soft smile played on Lisa's lips, her eyes shining with a depth of emotion that mirrored your own.
"That was..." she began, her voice barely a whisper.
"Perfect," you finished, your fingers intertwining with hers.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow through the studio windows, you knew that this was just the beginning of your journey together. Whatever challenges lay ahead, you were ready to face them side by side.

PREVIEW:
Wednesday, April 10th, 1912 Southampton, London
The blare of the fog horn is unmissable, rattling the conversations in a small pub off the White Star Dock. Even through the dusty windows she was clear as day, big as anything anyone had ever seen. Large black body met with a red base, multiple decks, and four large smoke stacks. The ship seemed to go on forever, her beauty unmatched to anyone who had seen it – a behemoth on the seas. A glory – a masterpiece.
The doors of the pub fluttered open and closed all morning as it edged closer and closer to noon. Pints poured by the dozens, the hundreds – half the country coming to the piers to see off the Ship of Dreams and its passengers. The bar was alight with chatter, mixing in with the roar of people from outside — hundreds of people halfway to boarding, waving and kissing goodbye. Beer glasses clinked and people cheered while they watched a long line of high end cars gleam in the spring sun as they rolled down the dock. Precious cargo full of Europe and America’s elite.
Reporters and bellhops alike flock to them like flies, pub patrons ogling through the dusty windows while they exit their buggies.
Among the commotion, the endless chatter and screeching of pub seats, sat four men oblivious to the spectacle. They’re sitting around a small table with sweat on their brows as the April sun pours golden over them. Eyes burning over their cards as cigarette smoke wafts over their heads — the players lost in the fog during an intense round of poker.
The pot was mostly meager — a few pounds and swaths of change, a pocket watch, a penknife. But in the center was the crown jewel, a prize that would change the winner’s life forever. Two pieces of pressed parchment reading:
Tumblr media
The men leer over their hands, not a friendly face between them — the tickets were not the dealer’s, but two of the players who had bet the wrong guys. Guys who had been beyond the break and back again, meeting in Morocco, then Paris, and traveling together back to London — guys who had never lost a game of poker.
Eddie places his bet, pulling a small silver ring off of his right ring finger and tossing it in the center.
“Are you kidding?” Jeff asks from his left, “That’s everything we have.”
Eddie grins at him, taking a drag of his cigarette. The sun dances in his big brown eyes like he knows something the rest of them don’t, “When you got nothin’, you got nothin’ to lose.”
The two other players speak to each other heatedly in Swedish after one of them hits for a new card. The outburst makes it clear that things aren’t looking good for the Swedes — it makes Eddie’s heart leap. Maybe this is it, maybe he’s finally gonna get back to the states. “Sven?” he asks the man next to him. “Hit,” he replies, putting down a card and taking another. Eddie follows suit, furrowing his brow while his bangs meet his eyelashes. Sweat collects on the nape of his neck where his dark curls are twisted up in a graphite drawing pencil – a trick he picked up from women he met in France. He puffs the smoke from his mouth, eyes meeting the Swede across from him who looks like he couldn’t be having a worse day.
“Alright,” he says, putting his cigarette down on the ashtray between then, “Moment of truth. Somebody’s life’s about to change.”
He leans back in his chair and looks at his friend, sweat beading at the edge of his hairline and glinting off of his deep skin, “Jefferey?”
Jeff throws his cards down with a roll of his eyes. “Nothing,” Eddie nods.
“Nothing,” Jeff says curtly through a grit in his teeth. His heart pounds in his chest while he looks at the last of their money on the table – they can’t afford to lose.
“Olaf?” Eddie asks, the Swede throws down his cards in a huff, “Nothin’.”
“Sven?”
Sven puts down his cards and Eddie frowns, “Oh…two pair.”
His shoulders droop while he looks at his own cards, eyes lingering on the silver ring in the middle of the table, “I’m sorry, Jeff.”
“What do you mean ‘sorry’?” You idiot! You bet all of our bloody money! You imbecile, you–”
“I’m sorry, you’re not going to be able to visit your cousins in Paris again for a long time,” Eddie says with a serious edge. Jeff quirks his brow, triggering Eddie’s winning smile behind plush pink lips.
“‘Cause we’re goin’ to America!” he exclaims, slamming his cards down on the table, “FULL HOUSE, BOYS!”
Jeff leaps from his chair in the back of the pub, reaching for the tickets on the on the table, “WE’RE GOIN’ TO BACK TO AMERICA!”
“I’m goin’ home!” Ed exclaims while the boys hug tightly. The pub cheers for them, pints still flowing — men and women with red cheeks having no idea what they’re cheering for until a fight breaks out between the Swedes.
Eddie laughs, hoisting his bag up over his shoulder and Jeff does the same — their white shirts dirtied with the stains of the day before.
“I can’t believe it,” Jeff says, teeth shining in a grin across his face, “Goin’ back to America!”
“Titanic’s going back to America, boys,” the barkeep says, pointing at the clock, “In five minutes!”

“A Hundred and More Memories with You”
SUMMARY: A story in which Ace reminisces upon the many memories of him and Ashi.
WORD COUNT: 5.8k
NOTES: <3 enjoy the rare Ashi writing
taglist: @taruruchi @deeva-arud @thelegendaryfluffypotato13 @midnightmah07 @cynthinesia
Tumblr media
Ace would consider himself an Ashi expert. A lot of people would consider him one too, considering how often they hang out with each other.
And when he says it’s a lot, it’s a lot. Sure, of course, there’s Deuce and Grim too. They all go through their antics together, whether it be slaying in a singing and dancing competition or solving the latest issue Night Raven College has got to answer, which includes facing off against high school boys in life-risking duels, when they should really be in therapy. They all went through a lot together and somehow pulled through and survived all that nonsense too. Same class, same lunch table, same shenanigans for them all. And Ace would like to think of them as a dream quad, but here’s the thing.
Who got there just a little earlier than Juice did when Ashi was having trouble at Scarabia? Who did Ashi go to hug tightly when that happened? Who did Ashi stay behind with when VDC practice came by and everyone else left the room? Who turned out to feel so comfortable with him that she fell asleep on his shoulder? Who always bunks at Ramshackle and is always taken in by the prettiest girl at NRC?
That’s right. Not Grim, not Deuce, but Ace Trappola himself.
It might not be much, but Ace finds himself thinking that it’s those small things that no one else sees that places him a little higher than everyone else. With this, at least. He can confidently go up to anyone and go, “Hey! That’s my best friend you’re talking to, you know?” with a shit eating grin on his face, and no one would bat an eye. Because that’s just usual Ace behavior around Ashi.
Behind closed doors or not, he’s real committed to her.
…Maybe if you cut out their first meeting, actually. He thinks about it sometimes. How’d he fall for a goody two shoes like her?
Just some girl, straight out a coffin and fell onto the floor, during NRC’s opening ceremony. It was really funny! Doesn’t mean it made him think much about it. Like yeah, sure it's all-boys school, but it’s not anything crazy. What, none of you have seen a girl before? Do you guys not have moms?
Until Ace spots her again, her eyes crinkling in confusion at the sight of the Great Seven. Some dialogue is exchanged, and nothing is of note. She’s cute and pretty, sure, but it’s not like Ace came to NRC, an all-boy’s school might he reiterate, to get a girlfriend. After the last snooze fest he had? Pfft! Forget it! Not to mention she’s got no passion or fire within her. The little furball she’s got beside her is the one who carries that all for her, I guess.
“Maybe before you try gettin’ into the academy again, you should try a second crack at kindergarten? Hahaha!” That was the Ashi-Grim duo’s first taste of the iconic grin™.
“Grrrr… How dare you!”
“Anyway, I’ve gotta head to class~. Unlike these two janitor losers over here I’ve got places to be. I’ll leave you alone and let’cha get back to picking up some trash.”
Ace still remembers looking over at such a blank face. Just standing there like a statue, watching the situation play out. Nothing about this interaction would’ve hinted to what was in store for him.
“Hey, goody two shoes, maybe loosen up a little, how ‘bout it? You could benefit from some good old insults every once in a while. Take a page outta the weasel’s book here.” The redhead teases one last time before his departure, as he watches the brunette’s eyes lock with his.
“Hehe,” Ashi finally perks up, “I’ll think about it, Acey.” She chimes.
Ace is about to shoot something at her again, until a blaze of blue fire engulfs the area around them. All tension is lost and next thing he knows, he’s battling a literal animal and being sent to wash windows as punishment for the roughhousing. He didn’t sign up for this at all! But after some self reflection, the Ace now would roll his eyes and mutter, “Well, I GUESS it was kinda deserved.” But of course, that would only be because of Ashi. Despite how much of a “bad influence” he is on her, in her own way, his best friend had her own ways of helping Ace improve himself too. They balance eachother out well, and Ace smiles as he thinks this. To make himself feel better? Maybe.
Even still, in the beginning, Ace didn’t really think much about Ashi. He ditched the whole window cleaning ordeal for a reason, you know? And no matter how hard he tried, no amount of pushing her buttons resulted in any sort of snap back, no retorts at all. Bullying her more than Deuce didn’t work either— so he eventually gave up and changed targets. Which I guess was fine, since he had to focus on the stressful situation of the mines.
But at the end of the mage stone obtaining mission, when Ashi caught some time alone with him on the walk back as Deuce and Grim walked ahead, Ace figured that she just wanted a piece of him. He can’t blame her, honestly, so he decided to give her what she wanted and talked to her casually for a while. He thought one last time, adding some spice into the conversation, to joke around.
“You were reaaaally scared back in that dark and spooky house, weren’tcha?” Ace teases, giving Ashi that signature grin once again, “The cave too, to boot. What are you, actually scared of the dark or something?”
He catches Ashi’s attention, and she looks at him, offended, “Aaand? I totally did it still, you know! Give credit where credit’s due, Acey!”
“Still means you’re a baby.”
“Hmph.” Ashi huffs in response, pouting a little, “…At least I manned up and made a plan instead of arguing like an idiot with the others.”
An actual comeback? For real? Ace didn’t think she had it in her!
The ginger’s lips curl up into an even bigger grin as he pokes the bear a little more, “And who did the execution, huh? Without me, you wouldn’t have even gotten to go through with your plan!”
“I could say that about Deucey. He definitely deserves more credit than you do anyway.”
“Ha! As if. Juice over here barely did anything.”
“Either way, neither of you would’ve come out of this successfully without me,” Ashi sighs, fed up with Ace’s behavior, “What’s your brawn worth if you don’t think about how to use it?”
“Offense over defense, baby!”
“Exactly why you would’ve failed without me!” Ashi snaps at him, immediately realizing how much she’s allowed Ace to wind her up right after. She internally scolds herself for acting out, and before Ace can say anything else, she breaks eye contact and changes topics.
Noticing how her body stiffens and her words seem less… slangy than usual, Ace can’t help but ponder about this. This whole entire time, not a single complaint has come out of her lips. Her voice was constantly sing songy throughout the entire nerve-wracking situation, but the way that it climbed up and became more strict and stern at this moment was a complete curveball. A breaking point, perhaps? Not to mention, the sudden way her body closes up and acts like it resets? It’s like she’s being corrected. A light goes off in the instigator’s head.
Huh, Ace thinks. Maybe goody two shoes here isn’t exactly what she’s living up to be.
He barely knows how he got here himself. Something about Ace’s first taste of something outside of Ashi’s whole “peppy good girl” deal was enough of an incentive to pester her more, and more, and more and more and more, only in attempts to see more of that special side of her. And somehow, through some sort of divine intervention, he got closer than anyone could’ve imagined for the guy who’s known for pissing people off.
Closer than anyone else she’s met in Twisted Wonderland has gotten, and based on how she words it, closer than anyone in her home world, even. The fact makes Ace feel bad, but at the same time he can’t help but feel kind of proud. Hell, he doesn’t even understand how people don’t like the real her. The whole good girl act is polite and sweet, sure, but compared to how dynamic and fun the hidden side of her is… Why would you ever think that the shallow 2D side is better than the in-depth 3D side in this scenario?!
If he ever gets there, Ace pledges to beat the hell out of every person who made Ashi think this in her home world. You can count on it.
From there on out, he had to keep his curiosity at a minimum. Though he wanted to keep pushing, he cared for her so much that he didn’t wanna cross her boundaries too far. So he kept it as teases and banters for the time being, because that’s how you keep it light and fun. Such as having sleepovers, just the two of them at Ramshackle.
To say the least, Ace got a little too comfy.
At some point, Ashi would offer him an old sweatshirt she never wears, too oversized for her but perfectly fitting for Ace during the cold nights he would want to visit. At some point, Ace had a secret knock he used at her window after the incident where he had only scared her instead of delightfully surprising her. At some point, Ashi and Ace giggling the night away became the norm for them.
Simple? Yeah, Ace had to admit, it’s just talking the night away with a friend till you both pass out, but it has its charm. Just as they showcase it in movies, the two best friends always hang out under the covers, tell scary stories and laugh excessively due to being way too sleep deprived, having a special bond that no one else would understand, just because they understood each other that well.
Something so simple, and yet something Ashi never got a taste of before.
She never got that close.
So, Ace, being the great friend he is and being the bearer of knowing Ashi’s history of, well, not being too involved in the usual teen activities, he would take it upon himself to go and make a dream come true. His mind begins to wander off way back when, before any of these bestie advancements were a thing. When Ace wouldn’t come out of nowhere, instead making his way through the door, like a normal person. And what better place to propose the idea of Ashi’s very first sleepover than the cafeteria?
“You’re telling me you’ve never had a sleepover. Seriously, Ash? The heck kinda life did you live?” Ace jokes, giving her the most bewildered look as they eat their lunch.
“Eh…” Ashi mumbles about, thinking about it as she takes a bite of her sandwich, “Kinda just the way the cards played out? Dunno, my mom didn’t really get the whole dealio.” Shrugging as if it’s nothing, she looks over at Grim chowing down his food to end the current topic.
Ace looks at her as she finishes talking, and he feels like her smile’s lacking more than it usually does.
“Then why don’t you experience it while you’ve got the right cards?” He shoots back, pulling Ashi back into the conversation, “You know who’s not here? Your mom.” He chuckles a little at his little joke, “Seriously though, take this whole away-from-your-family situation to your advantage!”
“Ace has a point, actually,” Deuce joins the conversation, “For once we agree on something. You’re already in a magic world, what’s one more abnormal thing to experience?”
Ashi blinks a couple times at the pair, before putting her finger to her chin and letting out a hum, “I guess so… Who do I invite, though? Plus, there’s Grimmy I gotta worry about too. This guy’s a drama queen…”
“I need my beauty sleep!” Grim scowls, before getting right back to his tuna. Ace rolls his eyes before he leans across the table, towards Ashi.
“Invite me, duh! Who else is your bestie, Ash?”
She smiles at his attitude, “Mr. Trappola, huuuh?” The brunette takes a comedic amount of time to think about it, “All his complaining miiight keep me up at night… Me and Grim are in the same boat when it comes to the sleep department too~.”
Deuce chuckles, “He really doesn’t shut up. Actually, a sleepover with all of us would be fun, but I have studying to do…”
Grim adds on, “Well I don’t wanna see an ugly face when I wake up!”
Tired of the bashing from the rest of the group, Ace loudly groans, “Then why don’t you take your ugly mug to me and Juice’s dorm while me and Ashi have a sleepover! Problem solved!”
It takes one glance from Deuce for Ace to get the message, “You know, you just sound like you just wanna get alone time with Ashi.”
The redhead glares back, “As if! I just wanna have a sleepover!”
…Only to add a solemn “Back me up, would you?” to it. Deuce gets it and helps him out.
“It would help me actually, Ashi. Take him away from me so I don’t have to worry about getting off track. And Grim can’t be that bad of a roommate, right? He’s just a cat. If he slept the whole time, I think it’d be relaxing if anything.” Deuce adds on, slowly egging on Ashi to decide.
“If you feed me enough tuna!”
The prefect ponders for a second, as her fingers tap once, twice on her chin, “I mean I guess… It’s not like it’s the first time Acey’s stayed over.” Ace pumps his fist in the air, and the other two think he’s being a little too obvious.
“Win! This time, it’ll totally be a proper sleepover. Call me the sleepover master, even! Get ready to not get a wink of sleep tonight, Ash!”
Ashi giggles in response before the bell rings and everyone scatters once again.
Later that night, Ace appears at the door of Ramshackle once he gets word that Grim has taken his place as Deuce’s roommate. He knows that Ashi’s scared of being alone in the dark, so of course he rushes over as fast as he can. Not because he wants to. It’s just what a decent person would do. It’s nothing to give him a weird look about. Right?
A few knocks and he’s let inside, and it’s not like anything has changed much. The dorm is the same old dusty and dainty place it’s always been, except this time he’ll be spending his time in an actual bed. No, it’s not because he’s asked all those previous times that Ashi finally caved in and let him get what he wants. It’s because now they’re just close enough that it’s chill. There’s no other reasoning further than that. Right?
Because he and Ashi are just best friends. He’s not here because he wants to have alone time with her! Ace just wants to see his best friend happy, able to experience all the things she hasn’t. Because that’s what good friends do.
…Right?
Okay, maybe Ace did get a little sidetracked from his main mission now that he thinks about it. The whole idea of being alone with Ashi planted a seed in his head, he admits it, but how could you blame him, honestly? None of that means that he didn’t get what he originally wanted, though. Two birds with one stone! He wins either way!
Still, it’s a night filled to the brim with snarky comments and blissful laughter, and while certain housewardens wouldn’t allow staying up this late, Ace decides that the lack of sleep is worth it. A sleepy Ashi is always cute, cuter than usual, and it’s an evening of rare sights. They’re both laying down all across the bed, staring at the blank ceilings and watching the cobwebs the prefect hates sway with the breeze of the bedroom. It’s calm, and neither of them are thinking about what they’re saying. The norm for one and an uncommon occurrence for the other.
“So how’d your first sleepover go?” Ace mutters, tiredness hitting them both. It’s dim within the room, and it’s thanks to Ashi’s nightlight that they can even take in this atmosphere at all.
“It was pretty hypesies.” Ashi replies back, and it’s a simple exchange. ‘Till she speaks up again after a while, and Ace is surprised at her different tone of voice.
“…Thanks, Acey.”
“Eh? Sounded pretty serious there, Ash.”
“That’s ‘cause I am!”
Ace faintly laughs, “Yeah, yeah. No problem.”
“Really though. I’m pretty sure you’re not as dumb as you look, so you probably caught on already,” Ace’s eyebrows suddenly jump in surprise at the sudden change in character, and Ashi proceeds, “I’m not really used to being this buddy buddy with people, even chicks— And like, it just means a lot to me that you even volunteered to do this with me in the first place. It makes me real happies to call you my bestie, you know?
I like that you’re honest. It makes me feel comfies. I can kinda be more like myself, somethin’ like that? And…” her voice quiets down before she says anything else. Which is somehow both a good and bad thing for Ace.
They both soak in the moment, and Ace’s cheeks feel like they’re burning up just a little. This is probably the most genuine reaction he’s gotten out of her— But at the same time, it’s completely unfair how she’s simultaneously making this seem so casual and yet so impactful.
His train of thought quickly fades away as a small, weak laugh from Ashi breaks through, “Sorries, I got too serious there. You might as well call me Riddle or something at this point,” she murmurs, her voice not quite carrying the energy she intended, “Probs ‘cause it’s past my bedtime.”
Ace hears her sit up a little, and he still stares at the ceiling blankly as he hears the crinkles and turning of the blankets along the bed. His next words practically come out of thin air, cheeks still feeling warm.
“You really should talk more, Ashi.”
The noises he hears suddenly pause, and after a quaint moment of silence, he hears a relieved exhale from the other side of the bed.
“…Thanks, Acey.”
It’s then that Ace wonders if it’s not just his cheeks that are hotter than usual at that moment.
From there on out, Ace feels both better and worse about himself. Because, man, his chest begins to feel kinda weird when he sees her. He swears she’s gotten prettier somehow, but at the same time, he also feels proud that he’s Ashi’s special person— she basically said it herself, y’know? Part of him wonders if this is the farthest he’s gonna get. Both as a friend and, well, maybe more.
So he waits days on end, they have their sleepovers more and more often, and hell, they get to a point where they have sleepovers every day. Ah yeah, the VDC days, amirite?
In his head, Ace thinks that this “era” of “AshAce” (name made by him, proof is in his alchemy notebook) is an era in which their relationship deepened even further.
There’s multiple points and examples he could give, and he’d tell you about ‘em and brag all day if he could. But the most vivid memory for Ace, apart from the one he forcibly tried to forget out of embarrassment, has gotta be when he really saw Ashi speak her mind.
He remembers the rain pittering and pattering outside when he went to go and get a drink. It was a cool night, after everyone was done and exhausted from practice, so he figured the one who’s all “I need my beauty sleep!”, especially, was asleep. Well, until he saw a figure outside and flipped the freak out— Alas, it was just Ashi, but he found it to be pretty out of character for her. She’s notorious for being horrible at dressing herself for the cold, and he’s sure Vil would bark her head off if she got sick before their performance. Ace’s neck still aches in memory of all the times he’s been collared, and he knows that pain of being yelled at by a housewarden all too well. Knowing Ashi? She wouldn’t be able to handle that kind of discipline. So why’s she out there in the first place?
He makes his way outside to investigate, and knocks a couple times on the doorframe, same pattern as he would when stepping through her window. Ashi’s frame jumps in surprise, and she quickly turns around, body stiff and drops of rain across her skin.
“Oh, it’s just you, Acey.”
“You aren’t looking too hot. What’re you even doing out here?”
“Ah…” Her tone of voice trails off, and ends off with a sneeze. Not a good sign.
The boy lets out a somewhat disappointed sigh as he sits down next to her, aware of the sketchbook on the porch as she keeps to herself. Based on the way there’s endless scribbles and several notes floating around the halfway finished sketches, contrasting against the blissful, one-take doodles in class, Ace puts the pieces together and concludes that maybe he’ll stay quiet just this once, the best he can. To prevent himself from getting any more tuckered out, and to prevent Ashi clamming up again.
He doesn’t like oysters, and clams sure aren’t that different in this scenario.
Now that he’s got a better look at her though, Ashi doesn’t seem to be very warm. The rainy ambience gave everything a downer mood, and her lack of a dry jacket is concerning. Her cheeks are wet too; but Ace can’t tell if that’s a byproduct of the weather or her own emotions.
“You don’t wanna get sick, do you? Vil’s never gonna let you hear the end of it.” Ace mutters, as he takes his own NRC blazer and drapes it across Ashi’s shoulders. She gives a faint smile, one saying thanks, before it fades away once again.
“You know me~. Not good with cold weather.”
“You’re even worse with discipline.”
“Fairs.” Ashi sighs, her voice quavering a little. The vibes in the air aren’t it, as Ashi would usually say, and I guess that’s something to apologize for for her.
“Sorry,” she says. It’s a quick mutter, but Ace hears it. And he hears her act unravel further and further, feeling his own heart drop and drop.
Hesitant, she continues, “I’m— I think I’m too tired to keep anything up at this point. There’s been so many issues going on and with managing and performing in VDC and feeling homesick I can’t even look anyone in the face right now. I’m so worried that my smile doesn’t live up to what it usually does, and I’m worried that everyone’s gonna notice and it’s all gonna go to ruins and the whole process of learning the dance and song is gonna get so— so… I don’t know!
I wanna perform. I want to learn from the others, but I don’t want to show them an Ashi that they’ll be annoyed with or make them think she isn’t what she’s lived up to be. I just can’t muster up the courage to push the act, so I end up spiraling down and isolating myself which is so not it for a cooperative project like this. Even if I do show up, the heck are the odds that they’ll be satisfied with such a half-assed act. It’s so hard to keep up.”
And now I’m showing you all of this stuff that I don’t want you to see and it’s embarrassing. It’s… I’m sorry, Ace. I’m sorry.”
Her confession finally comes to an end, and Ashi falls into silence. Meanwhile, Ace’s response is said so quickly— It doesn’t even seem like he’s keeping up with his own words.
“Ashi, seriously, you know I really don’t care, right?”
“…Huh?”
“Actually. I don’t care at all. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I don’t give a care in the world if you’re crying on my shoulder or laughing and doodling on my paper in class,” a breathy laugh follows suit, “Great Seven, honestly, when are you gonna realize that?”
The way Ace’s words just fall out of his mouth make him feel like he’s being too honest and brash again, and he doesn’t want to hurt Ashi in any way. He stops himself for a second before looking at the brunette’s expression, delicate and yet invested. It’s not anything ordinary, and maybe someone would find it weird coming from her. But if anything, Ace is an honest man. Both of them know this.
“You… Man. You know how I said you should talk more? That still holds up. You should think less, if anything. You overthink all these things, and you’re so people pleaser about it. Like— C’mon! You know I’ve got your back. You don’t have to be so cautious and scared of things.”
Ashi can barely process his words.
“Just know that I…”
Ace pauses.
“I… care for you. A lot.”
The silence that follows after is awkward, sure. Two frozen figures under the thin overhead of Ramshackle dorm, and Ace feels like he’s fumbled his words. The one time he hesitates.
Yet, one more raindrop falls to the floor, breaking the silence. And after that, one, two, three follow pursuit.
She doesn’t say anything, and yet Ace hears so much. Offering her his shoulder, they spend just a while longer together, soaking in the moment. Ace doesn’t mind the tears soaking into his clothing. Because if it results in Ashi’s true, sunny smile shining his way, he doesn’t mind. He doesn’t mind at all.
Of course, not without some lighthearted teasing.
It’s a bittersweet memory, Ace notes as he reminisces. A memory of many, but definitely one of the highlights, he thinks. Like he said, a pretty core point in their relationship, and an eye opener as to how Ashi works.
…He could even say it helped soothe his own insecurities too.
Ace would consider himself brash, assertive, and I guess in some cases, insensitive of other’s feelings. Other people think that too. It’s part of who he is, the troublemaking prankster he is. It’s a double edged sword. Sometimes people complain about your attitude and think you’re a dick, or sometimes people actually think you’re doing something good on a rare occasion.
While this kind of attitude could totally get you out of sticky scenarios, sometimes Ace’s heart hurts at the way people climb up before him. He did it to himself, really— I mean, he’s gained a reputation and at an expense, he just so happened to lose the chance of hearing some praise. The troublemaker gets something done? At least he’s actually done something. The good guy does it? Everyone’s cheering him on.
It stings a little.
It’s just the way he is, he knows it. He tells himself this again and again. He’s proud of it, but it’s hard to feel like he’s really accomplished something when people treat him the way they do. When he feels like he’s falling behind, all he can do is give snarky remarks to the people above him. He doesn’t do anything. He doesn’t gain anything.
But the rainy clouds fade away when Ashi’s near him, able to put all her trust in his care and see him as something better than a guy who’ll mess things up. She sees him as her knight in shining armor, and Ace’s heart heals.
To be someone people want to be around, and to have people see you for your true self without berating you because of it.
It’s something they both want. Something they both have, now that they’re together. Ace doesn’t wanna let that go. Not for one second.
These memories and thoughts with the girl he really loves are what Ace has to repeat in his mind, over and over and over again in this moment. Because when he’s standing in their little Heartslabyul hideout, the mood perfect and warm just like those paintings Ashi gushes about, voice clear and his back straight, he needs all the evidence he has.
He’s ready to take a shot at making this last forever.
Though, despite how determined he is, it’s not like he’s acting like his palms aren’t insanely sweaty right now. It’s lowkey embarrassing at how riled up he is about this.
Even in his basketball matches, he isn’t this nervous. But maybe it’s ‘cause Ashi isn’t cheering him on now that he’s really feeling the pressure? His thoughts wander and wander… couldn’t she get here sooner?
Jeez, how do you talk to girls again?
Ace has had a girlfriend before. He knows how to treat girls, but this opportunity is so much more stressful. Ashi’s not just a shot at a possible girlfriend for fun. He’s surprised himself if he’s being real about it, that he’s even this serious about them.
He didn’t intend for it to end up this way. To be friends, to best friends, to falling for one another and now, risking it all away in attempts to, what, kiss her? I guess it would be worth it. Wait— maybe he shouldn’t get too cocky about it. But doesn’t Ashi love him because he’s cocky? Wait a minute! Who said she even liked him like that in the first place?!
The redhead groans a little as he throws his head back. His last get-a-girl operation compared to this is insane. From boring stupid love to serious I-love-you-for-real love? Did Ashi really impact him this badly? Did her hopeless romantic disease spread to him too?! At this point, Ace doesn’t know if the break they spent apart while Ashi was off fighting Idia helped him calm down his feelings or make them more prominent.
He wallows in his thoughts a little longer, the doubt slowly consuming him, before a small noise of footsteps make their way towards him, causing him to straighten up. A patch of leaves open up, and Ashi waves through, catching Ace with somewhat of a goofy smile on his face.
Gosh, she really is pretty.
The nervous boy stands and waits for her to make her way towards him, and Ashi looks around the garden. Someone spruced it up, for sure. Starting out as just a simple hideout for Ace when he tried stalling from getting collared by Riddle, and turning into a hangout space for the two of them, Ashi never would’ve thought she’d see it in its full glory like this. Some cute fairy lights, treats on the small table, and even considering her fear of the dark, something about the atmosphere here still makes her feel delighted. It’s nice, but it obviously gives the suspicion that something’s gonna happen.
While she’s stuck enjoying the scenery, Ace can’t help but feel his smile getting even goofier as he watches her. The smile that shines through as she looks over at him tells Ace that he’s gotten successful with the first part.
“Ahaha. Acey, everything’s so bedazzled. What’s happening?” Ashi jokes, her voice chiming through the nighttime breeze. The redhead chuckles a little, before stepping another step closer.
“Just got something to tell you. It’s not a bad joke this time, I swear,” Ace comments, trying to keep the mood light, “So I tried getting the vibes to translate through this and that. Artsy, right? You proud?” He gives a snarky smile, gaining a laugh from the brunette.
“Yeah yeah~. So what is it?” Ashi tilts her head, awaiting for the big reveal. Ace gulps, before going on ahead. Just like he planned.
“Listen, I know that we haven’t really gotten time to spend with eachother since the end of VDC, but the whole break while you were gone… It got me to think about some stuff.” He starts off, focusing on the way Ashi’s expression changes along the way, “It made me really think of all the stuff we’ve been through, together, and I couldn’t help but keep thinking about how close we’ve gotten since you got here.
And NRC is filled to the brim with guys. Heck, some of them even have crushes on you. But…” Ace exhales, his heartbeat quickening as he starts to forget his lines. But in proper Trappola fashion, he bounces back and decides to go with his gut.
Brows furrowed as he clasps Ashi’s hands in his and pulls it to his chest, he spills his heart out to her.
“But none of those guys, and I mean none of them deserve you! You deserve someone you can laugh and cry with. Someone who won’t hate on you for showing something a little weaker than a big grin. Like me.
No matter what, even if we ever butt heads, you know I’ll always set it straight. Heck— I don’t even know how much time you have left in Twisted Wonderland— and I don’t know how much time we have left together. But none of that matters.
Because, Ashi— I love you.
I love you and I want to spend every single second with you. As something more than friends. Something where I can give you all the love you deserve, and you don’t have to be scared.
So please, just answer me.
Will you let me?”
The stars shine in Ashi’s eyes as she processes Ace’s words, and he feels his heart beating out of his chest. The tension is insane, and he can’t do anything but watch her for any sign of a reaction.
Stars, dancing in her eyes as they tear up and shine, her cheeks being painted a rosy red, and her shining smile falling into a soft one.
“Ace…”
“I love you, Ash.”
She laughs as her face faces downwards, hair falling over her eyes, “You idiot…” she mutters, before looking Ace in the eyes once again.
“I love you too. A lot.” Ashi confesses back, voice choking up a little as she laughs again. Again and again. It’s music to Ace’s ears, and he can't help but find himself laughing along as he picks her up and hugs her like it was her last. The two simmer in their emotions for a while, tears and jolly laughter transforming the atmosphere into a lovely and bright scene.
This is another memory to mark down, Ace subconsciously thinks as he holds Ashi in his arms, one to look back on again and again.
And he can’t wait to make even more memories from here on out.

hi hello!!! i love your stories, and I’ve been getting back into bad batch and i’d love to request a piece of your writing!! could i have an AFAB reader x hunter please? reader is their professional field medic and certified mechanic, who was an old competitive dancer all throughout school, academy days, and training. one day, she’s cleaning up in the ship and finds a stowaway holopad and holodisk that’s full of readers performances from years past of every single one of their dance performances. as reader watches through the numerous amounts of performances, omega and the others see and asks to watch all of her performances with the reader. later on, when reader is asleep, omega brings up the topic of the reader being a dancer to the others and hunter, and nudges him in the direction of learning one of her favorite dances for the upcoming summer festivals in Pabu.
and then cue hunter struggling how to learn the iconic dance and lift from Dirty Dancing.
reader finds out, because crosshair mentioned in passing to fluster the reader about their not-so-secret crush on their sergeant. reader plans to make their move and catch hunter during practice—and gets him at the right time. hunter reluctantly agrees to do the dance with her, but insists it’s nowhere near as good as her recorded performances. as they run through the dance, the reader goes for the jump and hunter successfully lifts them in the air—which leans to reader being so excited they kiss hunter as a thank you. confessions ensue, and the whole squad saw it.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
There isn't a period of your life you can remember without losing yourself in a dance. You have blurred memories of yourself stumbling on your own steps with no more than four years old, trying to follow the way your parents happily danced with each other in the kitchen, love and peace almost breathable in the air of your small home. You remember how you grinned, wide-eyed, when they first took you to your first ever dance class; how excited you always were when school finished and they drived you there in the afternoons. You danced throughout school, medical care academy, and the years you spent getting a degree in engineering and mechanics. Hell, you even danced through your combat training period with the GAR; finding strength and comfort in well-learnt rutines, moves and steps you could pull elegantly and effortlesly even with your eyes closed, letting the music and muscle memory guide you. Those little moments allowed you to carry on.
When you find your old holodisks while cleaning and tidying up the Marauder –thank the Maker these guys have you, if not they could be covered in their own dirt by now– an involuntary nostalgic smile spreads through your face. Your parents made sure to record every single one of your performances, every competition year after year after year; gifting them all to you in a heartfelt goodbye when you announced you were going to travel to Coruscant and volunteer for the GAR four years ago.
You're half way through your records when Omega joins you sitting down on the corridor floor; curiously peering down onto your cracked datapad.
"What are you watching?" She asks, then gasps when she recognices your figure in the video. "That's you! I knew you danced, but not like that!"
You chuckle and turn the screen towards her. Omega's eyes don't leave the datapad; nor your body moving almost ethereally through the recording.
"Yeah, I did competitions and everything, before the war" you tell her with a small smile. "Mum and dad went to every single one".
"Wow" Omega grins up at you, tilting her head. "What's your favourite?"
"My favorite dance?" You hum thoughtfully. Then, tap away in your datapad, finding the right recording. "Probably this one. It's a style called dirty dancing. It's fun and carefree, while also sensual and pasionate".
Omega stares at the way your old self smirks to the male dancer in the video. You let her watch the whole dance; her eyes growing wider with the final iconic jump.
"I miss having a dance partner" you laugh, watching with a fond smile your old friend hiking you up on his hands. "There's only so many moves you can practice on your own... I loved trying those challenging ones".
Omega hums, lost in her own thoughts.
"Can I keep this? For a few days?" She asks, hopeful. "I'd like to watch a few more".
You shrug in acceptance; then caress her shoulder affectionately.
"You can keep them for the whole month if you want. As long as you take care of them and give them back..."
Omega gives you a radiant smile.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Two nights after that, when you're asleep on Tech's bunk –the goggled clone piloting the Marauder back to safety–, Hunter catches Omega wide awake in the middle of the night, eyes glued to a datapad he doesn't recognise as one of Tech's, and a almost concentrated expresion on her face.
"What are you watching, kid?" He asks her, gently, staring up at her small makeshift bedroom they managed to arrange for her.
Omega blinks and pauses the video. Her innocent face fills with childish excitement.
"Star's old dancing performances! Did you know she went to competitions and everything?" she gushes, whispering confidentionally.
Hunter smiles silently.
"I didn't know that, no. So she let you watch her recordings, then?"
Hunter is very curious, he can't deny that. He's dying to have a look through that datapad.
Omega nods and quickly finds the specific video on the datapad files.
"Yeah, she even showed me her favourite once. It's called dirty dancing. Here, you can watch yourself!"
Omega all but pushes the datapad into Hunter's hands, and he has no other option –nor he wants to– to stare at your recording, your figure dancing flawlessly through the screen. He has a fond tiny smile on his face without even realising it.
"Why don't you learn that dance and surprise her for the upcoming festival in Pabu, Hunter?" She suggests, whispering excitedly.
Hunter swallows nervously.
"I... Don't think I'll be able to pull that, kid".
"I disagree" Tech's voice suddenly cuts in the conversation at his back, and Hunter turns around expectantly towards him. The Marauder must be set in automatic course now. "We're naturally agile and have trained our coordination skills for years; I believe learning a dance such as this once is only a matter of effort and practice. At least to cover a minimum and do a decent job; not achieving a profesional level, that is".
Hunter hesitates. He feels like he'll look ridiculous trying this. But oh, to see that expresion on your face...
Omega grins.
"Come on, Hunter! There's a whole month left and Tech and I can give you tips and help you learn the rutine. She mentioned the other day just how much she missed having a dancing partner. It'll make her so happy!"
Hunter sighs, negative crumbling down with their insistence. Who would have told him that a soldier like him would have to learn how to dance, huh?
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Crosshair's new favorite hobby is watching Hunter struggling to learn Star's dance. It's ridiculous, really; how the firm, fierce, determined sargeant turns to a nervous uncoordinated mess as soon as the music starts playing on Tech's datapad. He has made some considerable progress in the last two weeks, sure; but Hunter has a long way to go still. Crosshair is also delighted to watch the frustration on his goggled brother's face and needs to swallow his laugh when Tech joins in on the dance too; trying to teach Hunter the moves. The fact that Tech can apparently dance more or less right without proper training doesn't surprise him. Tech knows how to analyse visuals to perfection, pay attention to the details; and replicate fairly well. But Tech's not the dance partner their resident female has really in mind, huh?
Hopefully his brother would be able to properly learn the rutine for Pabu's festival in another two weeks time. Though Crosshair thinks it would be hilarious to watch him embarass himself in front of all Pabu's cheerful model citizens, he knows he wouldn't be able to look at Star in the eyes for days; and he hasn't got the patience to cope with such akwardness without snapping at the both of them.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
"Hey, Omega, did you finish watching those old vids?" You ask her almost a whole month after you lend her your datapad. "I was thinking on getting the pieces I need to fix it next time we make a pit stop to refuel".
Her eyes widens, and she smiles almost nervously.
"Uh, no... No, I haven't" she looks up at you guiltily. "Can I keep it for a week more?"
It's sweet she likes your recorded performances so much –and a bit strange, honestly–, so you nod in acceptance. Instead of smiling and staying with you to chat a bit longer though –like she would usually do–, Omega quickly dissapears under the excuse of having promised Wrecker a game of dejarik –periodically glancing backwards at you– in a way that feels too much like running away.
You frown completely confused. Crosshair stops in the corridor besides you, leaning lazily against the wall and watching Omega's hurried retreat as well. You tilt your head, pensive.
"Any idea what was that all about?" You ask hopefully.
Crosshair hums uncomitedly and stays quiet for a few seconds; perhaps pondering if he should give you an answer or not.
"They have this little show going on where Tech and Omega try to teach Hunter that dance you like so much". He finally confesses.
Your eyes fly towards him, stunned.
Crosshair shrugs.
"They wanted to surprise you in Pabu's festival" he pats your shoulder almost mockingly. "Seems you're crush on your sergeant is not that unrequited".
Crosshair almost swaggers out of sight; and though a small part of you feels embarassed for him noticing your feelings and irritated for ruining the surprise, it can't compare to how warm and loved you suddenly feel by the secret revealed. Hunter's learning dirty dancing for you. Hunter. For you.
The knowledge of such an important person to you, the man that holds your heart between his fingers, doing such a thoughtful gesture for you, pushing in hours of his time, is enough to make you melt. You can't help but smile for the rest of your day.

The Marauder is stationed in the middle of Aksiis forest, the Batch unanumously deciding to make one last pit stop here for the night before continuing your trip to Pabu. It has been a long two-months, and all of you are feeling a bit desperate to return to safety, to Pabu's peaceful coast line and it's wonderfully kind people; everyone will be even happier than usual with the summer festival finally taking place.
You walk to the cockpit after walking up from your small nap, and Crosshair's the only one there. You arch an eyebrow in a silent question and he makes an equally silent gesture with his head to the outsides of the ship; a desinterested expresion on his face. You nod and walk down the ramp. You swear you could completely communicate without words for days with Crosshair.
You hear music playing low, and you hesitate for just a second. Then you find your resolve again and approach them with a fond smile on your face. This is all very sweet, it really is; but you don't want this moment with Hunter happening for the first time in the middle of a crowded loud festival, all of your feelings being shared temptatively for the first time for all to gossip and stare. A nice, quiet night with just your newfound family sounds perfect instead.
Hunter is so engrossed with his rutine he doesn't even hear you arrive; only Omega widening her eyes and quickly pointing it out.
"S-star!" she stutters, surprised. "Uh, Hunter... Hunter, we got company".
Tech presses pause, and Hunter turns sharply towards you, eyes widening too at the shock of being caught. Wrecker's eyes flicker from one to the other in a very obvious, caught red-handed nervous expresion.
You chuckle and cross your arms in front of you.
"So this is where you all dissapear to, huh?"
Tech quickly furrows his brow, connecting the dots.
"Please, do not act as if Crosshair hasn't told you a word of this. For such a talent in dancing, your acting definitevely needs some work on top of that mediocre skill".
"Tech" Hunter calls him, firmly, voice low, and the goggled clone readjusts his lenses before standing up and clearing his throat.
"Apologies if I somehow offended you" he quickly offers, then makes a hand sign to Wrecker and Omega. "We will give you some space now".
The three of them walk away –Tech completely undisturbed by the whole act and the other two following him after showing you a guilty puppy smile–. "Space" appearently means sitting down on the Marauder's ramp, where your's and Hunter's figures are still very much visible. You ignore them and give Hunter a fond smile.
"So you've been learning how to dirty dance?" you ask, trying to control the eagerness inside.
Hunter actually blushes; the unusual sight surprises you, and you have to restrain yourself not to coo and cuddle up to him. He's got no right to be sexy and adorable at the same time. It isn't fair.
"Yeah" he plays with his bandana, tugging it down a tad nervously. "I'm afraid I'm still not very good, though".
You smile encourangingly.
"I doubt it. Plus, it always feels weird to practice on your own, less natural if it's a two person dance like this one. Want us to try together?"
Hunter had picture this going different in his mind. On Pabu, with a beautiful sunset; but you're beautiful enough for everything. And you're so excited... He can read it easily on your posture and eyes.
He sighs and offers a small smile.
"Alright. Tech?" He turns and calls to him, louder. "Mind playing the track one more time?"
Omega claps excitedly, Wrecker whistling cheerfully, and you take your position besides Hunter; shooting him a grin and watching him with the corner of your eye.
The music starts playing slowly. You smile to Hunter invitingly, aware that this dance is going to take much more physical contact than what you're both used to. He grabs your waist, hand then sliding up to your upper back, while you gently grab his bicep. When Hunter helps you make the initial tiny dip back, and pulls you back to him afterwards, your heart stutters and a radiant smile shows on your face. This is a dream come true for you.
You turn around shyly, standing in front of his body now, and softly drag your left hand downwards through his hair and neck while he caresses your hip gently. Your eyes lock, your body almost reclined on his; warmth spreads inside of you, the kind of feeling that's a mix between fondness, embarassment and delight bubbling inside of you. Hunter's hand finds yours; and then, just when the music changes the slow beat to something more quick and fun, he makes you spin away from him with a quick push, before tugging you back towards him and your body quickly steps into a well learnt rutine with your new dance partner.
You're both very focused on each move at first. It takes a bit of adjustment; you're not used to dancing with each other, Hunter is still learning, and it's being a while since you practiced this. It would be kind of pathetic to stumble –being a profesional– while Hunter nailed his steps perfectly. Soon, though, your matching grins widen; and you whole heartedly trust each other with every spin and twist, each success making your feet move faster and more self-assured until you're both flying over your secluded spot on Aksiis forest, lost in each other's eyes and the music.
It's exhilarating. It took you years of practicing together for you and your past dance partner to reach this level of complicity, of understanding; but it's easy with Hunter, the conection and syncronization almost natural, and you wonder if it's all a result of your mutual –now clear– feelings.
Hunter takes his spot on the solo part of his dance and you watch him with a grin, a chuckle escaping your lips. He shoots one back at you. He probably feels a bit self-conscious and a bit ridiculous, the soldier that he is; but he sees the delight and amusement in your eyes, the affection, hears your beating heart, and he'll do this and more to see that smile lighting up your face one more time.
He gives you a tiny nod to show that he's ready and you run towards him, jumping just an inch away from where he's waiting for you and trusting your body to him wholeheartedly. He doesn't let you down. Hunter catches you perfectly, quickly pushing your weight up over his head with two firm hands on either side of your pelvic; holding you steady as if you weight nothing for him. Hands spread to the sides and legs elegantly straight, eight foots away from the floor, you feel like you're flying; and the carefree, purely unadulerated happiness bubbles out of you in the form of laughter.
You're still laughing when Hunter carefully brings you back down to earth, both of your bodies sliding slowly against the other, pressed up together while your eyes lock once again. He's smiling as well, enjoying the sincere happiness etched on your face; love and fondness clear in his chocolate eyes. You kiss him; you can't help yourself.
Hunter smiles into your lips and tightens his hands on your hips affectionately. He'd learn a thousend more dances if this is his reward.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
"Crosshair, what are you doing?" Tech asks when he catches his twin with a datapad on his hands, holding it in the direction of Hunter and Star.
The sniper snorts quietly.
"I thought it was obvious" he drawls in his caracteristic low voice. "I'm recording".
Omega smiles.
"Aw, Crosshair, that's sweet! I'm sure Star would love to have this dance filmed as well" the girl agrees.
Tech hums, watching the couple dance completely in sync. He did a good job teaching him.
"Very considerate, yes" he acepts.
Crosshair huffs.
"Not really. I'm just making sure they feel in debt with me" he replies, still filming, and not caring if his words stay recorded forever. "They won't be able to throw shit at me for weeks".
Tech shakes his head, and Omega and Wrecker both laugh in a mix of exasperation and fondness. Crosshair smirks.
They all inevitably hold their breath when Hunter catches Star and pushes her over his head; smiling unconciously.
"He did it!" Wrecker exclaims excitedly.
Tech smiles proudly.
"He only had to drop me four times to manage it".
Crosshair chuckles. He zooms in.
Hunter and Star kiss; both melting in each others arms like they're missing pieces of each other's puzzle. Omega coos fondly, Wrecker grins and punches the air in a sign of victory, while Tech clears his throat slightly uncomfortable with the display of affection. Crosshair rolls his eyes.
When the kiss turns more passionate and less innocent, their bodies pressing up together with more purpose now, Crosshair stops recording and tugs at Omega's hand, dragging his goggled twin with the other one. Wrecker laughs and tags along after them, getting inside of the Marauder again.
"Okay" Crosshair snorts. "Enough of watching mum and dad making out, let's call it a day".
THE END.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I just want to talk about how TUA’s pilot episode uses specifically the Phantom Medley, ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ and ‘Istanbul (Not Constantinople)’ as interconnected character (re-)introductions, because they are so, so good.
So, the Phantom of the Opera Medley gives us our first, mostly silent introductions to five out of the seven siblings. Everyone is doing their thing: Luther is on the moon, Diego is being a vigilante, Allison is at her movie premiere, Klaus is released from rehab and instantly relapses, and Viktor is playing the violin part of the medley by himself on a stage. It establishes what each of them has going on in their life, and it establishes that all of them are alone. The Medley is an instrumental arrangement of several songs from the musical adaptation of the Phantom of the Opera, which is an interesting choice in itself, being a story about a brilliant, reclusive, and unhinged genius who harnesses a young girl’s talent for his own personal gain. There is more to it, but this is the relevant part, for obvious reasons. This is also the scene where we see the siblings find out about the death of the shadowy figure that nurtured their powers and abused them for selfish reasons. If the medley had used the lyrics of the musical, the first song used in the medley – the main theme – has as its key lyrics the following: “The Phantom of the Opera is there, inside my mind.” And isn’t that something for the adults introduced to this melody, whose puppet master messed them up so badly during childhood that that still lingers in all of them, a throughline of that first season?
To this first introduction, ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ serves as a re-introduction. It’s the same principle: a musical montage that focuses on each sibling to an overarching song. The theme of being alone is carried through, but this time, surprisingly, they’re not lonely. They’re not unified, they are certainly not getting along, but you get a feeling of their shared past. There is something that tethers them together. And where in the Medley, only Viktor could hear the music, because he was playing it, this time, the music is fully a part of the world. They’re all listening to the same song. They’re alone, but they’re not. They’re alone together, which is a step closer than it was in the Phantom Medley. And while the first montage focuses on what they were doing, established their occupations, this montage just gives us them…being. Existing, without anyone watching. Not their father, not the other siblings. We get such good insights into their personalities. Luther’s un-awareness of his own body leading him to accidentally punch the plane model. Diego’s array of dorky dance moves. Allison’s hesitance before she gets more and more into the song and allows herself to let loose. Klaus dancing with the ghost of his father. Viktor’s dancing being contained and unassuming. The title line, ‘I think we’re alone now’, just perfectly fits, and it’s a great example of visual media recontextualising a song’s lyrics. The original song is about sex, specifically the prohibition and taboo of teenage sex, and with the framing of the show, the lyrics instead become as literal as they could be. “Children behave / That's what they say when we're together / And watch how you play / They don't understand,” becomes about their childhood, about how they were never allowed to be kids, how they had to obey their father’s whims. And now he is gone, and they are alone, and it is good. Kind of. Sort of. While that iconic slow zoom-out visually shows that, their unity, despite all their differences, it is also all of them inside the Umbrella Academy. Them, and Grace, and Pogo, still in an environment that Reginald made. Reginald is still inside their minds. He is gone, but the structures he built, the damage he did to them is not. It’s this moment of catharsis, this instant where each and every one of the siblings allows themselves to be, to live, just for a moment, brought together by Luther playing a song loud enough for everyone to hear, where they think they’re free of Reginald’s abuse, and the rest of the show is them finding out that the death of an abuser doesn’t erase the effect he had. And then the music gets disrupted by someone quite literally crashing the party. But he crashes it from outside the house, because he is the one least concerned with (and, in this season, very clearly least affected by) Reginald.
Five gets his own musical (re-)introduction, and he gets it seven minutes before the end of the episode. Different from his siblings, we get to see his personality before he gets his musical key scene. And we meet him as a kid first, his arrogance, his powers, the use of teleportation to knock a guy out with a stapler. He then appears to inadvertently interrupt the first moment of unity his siblings have had in decades. He brushes off their father’s death. Casually reveals that Reginald has been dead to him for 45 years. It doesn’t matter to him. He has other things on his mind, but of course he doesn’t tell them, why would he? The arrogance is still there, his powers too. He’s insufferable, the viewer understands, and different. Different because he looks like a kid, a literal embodiment of the Umbrella Academy at its height, all knee-high socks and blazer, frozen in time, while at the same time having lived a very different life from his siblings. That’s all the viewer knows of him, by that point. And then ‘Istanbul (Not Constantinople)’ happens, and the understanding of the character shifts abruptly, as do the stakes for the entire show. While the introduction scene with the Phantom Medley and the re-introduction scene to ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ are about these different siblings, apart, but maybe closer than they think they are, united by the loss of their father, ‘Istanbul (Not Constantinople)’ shows you that this one has a completely different set of problems from his siblings. Namely, he is being tracked down, a wanted man, a very skilled killer. The two montages are so calm in comparison to the breakneck (pun intended) pace of Five’s kill spree. He takes out half a dozen men armed with machine guns by outfoxing them, killing them with a wide variety of items in a wide variety of different ways. While ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ contrasts the Phantom Medley, ‘Istanbul (Not Constantinople)’ contrasts the Five previously established in the show, especially his childhood self, and shows how his skills have developed. The innocence of the school uniform is quickly lost when he uses its tie to strangle a man to death. The first line in the song is ‘Istanbul was Constantinople / Now it’s Istanbul / Not Constantinople / Been a long time gone, Constantinople.” It’s about how something is technically the same thing – a schoolboy, perhaps – but time has irrevocably changed it, and it can never go back to that old version, because it hasn’t existed in a long time. It’s about Five, and it’s about the apocalypse, and the Commission, but it’s not about Reginald. ‘Istanbul (Not Constantinople)’ is the only non-diegetic song of the three discussed here, as in, it is not part of the show’s internal universe. The song is not playing in a jukebox in the diner. It doesn’t partially exist in the universe, like Viktor’s violin being the violin in the medley, or Luther playing the vinyl in the house. It is so different in principle and execution from the other two scenes, but it is still a scene meant to convey an understanding of the character, just like the other two are.
And despite it being purposefully and obviously different, I still think that ‘Istanbul (Not Constantinople)’ belongs to the other two scenes, that they form a united whole of introductions to the Hargreeves siblings. The diner scene rhymes with the other two, I think, in its marked differences, but there are threads that tie them together. How the violin is a key instrument in both the Phantom Medley and ‘Istanbul (Not Constantinople)’. How the medley shows the Hargreeves in the lives they had carved out for themselves away from Reginald, ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ positions them in the house they grew up in, in the Umbrella Academy, Reginald’s domain, whereas ‘Istanbul (Not Constantinople)’ is set in a place where the kids defied Reginald. How the theme of loneliness and being alone threads through all of them. How the songs are, in order, partially diegetic (siblings apart but tied together by their past), fully diegetic (siblings enjoying the same thing despite being physically apart) and non-diegetic (the one sibling that is apart from them in age, time, space, part of his upbringing, you name it). How pertinent the lyrics are in each case, even the ones that aren’t technically in the song. I just think all three of them are brilliant needle drops that add so much to the story, the understanding of the characters and their relation to each other, just in the microcosm of this one pilot episode. Also they’re all incredible bangers.

TUA Rewatch Drawings: S1E4
Tumblr media
[ID: A close up of Luther's horrified face, hands held up towards his face as he looks at something offscreen, he's scruffy with overgrown hair and beard. Behind his shoulder is the image of a child's jack-in-the-box monkey popping up, it's holding an umbrella. Written at the top of the image is "Monkey on the Moon". End ID.]
Favourite Moment: Cha Cha and Hazel having their hang over donuts, its so classic.
Favourite Line: "You're the one with the damn orthepedic bracelet." "I told you already, it's just for support!" - Chachh & Hazel / "I barely remember what we had for breakfast at this point." - Hazel (and me, on a daily basis)
Most likely to skip moment: Klaus' gurgling waterboarding torture - I hate the sound so much!
Most likely to rewind moment: The Meritech fire dance and surrounding scenes. Hands down.
I chose this because it's such an iconic opening to me, the horror on Luther's face, the coldness of the surgical room he's been left to sleep in. The fucking monkey. It's all so horribly good. And the way this came out like a bad old horror film poster pleases me greatly.
I know Luther makes some Questionable Choices in S1, but each time I rewatch it I remember just how fucked up he must be - whilst it doesn't excuse his actions, it does fuel them, in the same way Viktor slashing Allison's throat can't be excused, but the fuel behind the action is no less present.
I mean this boy:
Was at least emotionally manipulated as a child, but likely straight up abused.
Was thrust into a leadership role he had no business being in.
Lost 2 siblings.
Was isolated in a mansion, oscillating between boredom and life threatening situations.
Then he dies
Gets some truly horrifying and unconsensual body modification
Shipped off to the moon for 4 years of complete physical and near total social isolation.
His father dies who he has complex feelings for, then Grace, then Pogo betrays his trust and its one whole lot.
One of his siblings nearly kills the one he's closest to.
I never hated Luther in S1, and on this rewatch he showed so many more moments of sibling consideration than I remembered, in between being a mess of course.
Also: Eudora. I'm debating what purpose her death serves for the narrative. I think 90% of the emotions her death inspires in Diego could have easily been done by:
Diego thinking Klaus had died when he escapes, or just rage for someone torturing his brother?
Eudora could have been wounded and that would still make Diego think about pushing his agendas on people - except even with her death he doesn't think that.
I know he goes on a mini killing-people-won't-bring-you-peace arc, but, and maybe that brings him closer to Five? But another convo could have done the same? It's not like Eudora is particularly in the way of the plot so I don't know why she had to die - maybe Diego's growing up moment could be realising he doesn't have to keep pushing his agenda and affections on her?
I like her as a character and her presence because she gives Diego depth and a life outside the academy, which we rarely see in the others. Potentially she dies to show the danger of Hazel and Cha Cha, I don't know. Either way I'm conflicted about her, mainly because after 3 months in the 60's Diego seems to forget she exists, though I might have forgotten moments.

Hey, how was your day? Tired from work? Annoying boss? Come to reso- music! We'll heal you with music.
We gonna share some classic folk songs with you today. Folk music has always had a unique way of connecting with people, and they often feature slow, simple, repetitive melodies that allow the lyrics to take center stage and convey a message.
🎵
Can't get enough of 《Five Hundred Miles》.
Melodic, natural and fresh. Life is hard, and you're not 500 miles from home. If you listen to it when you are lost and confused, your mood will be calmed down...
If you miss that train I'm on, it's the one I've left alone and in dismay; listen to the whistle that stretches for a hundred miles, a hundred miles, and a hundred miles ......
🎵
《Take Me Home, Country Roads 》 is a 1971 song written by American folk singer John Denver with Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert.
The inspiration for the song came from Bill Danoff, a musician friend of John Denver's, and his wife, Taffy Nivert, who told him that he was accompanying Nivert on a trip to join her family in Maryland; on the way there, he remembered a tune that would be suitable for a folk ballad.
After hearing the demo tune, John Denver was intrigued enough to talk to Danoff and Nivert about revising it for his next album, Poems, Prayers and Promises.
Every time we hear this song, it always evokes strong feelings of homesickness. country roads, take me home, to the place I belong... No matter how unsatisfactory life is, as long as the home is still there, our souls and bodies will have a place to return to.
🎵
...How to appease the lonely soul on a long night? In the face of the darkness of silence, natural contemplation is the greatest solace, the stars in the hazy moonlight, full of dewdrops of flowers, have given us the freedom of tolerance, soaring thoughts, so that loneliness has become a kind of enjoyment in the journey of life.
Accompanied by the melody of the bass, loneliness becomes a rare luxury. In loneliness you hear the sound of gurgling spring water? In loneliness do you see the round dance song gliding through the grass on a summer night? “Hello, darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk to you again.” ...... Let's use the key of 《The Sounds of Silence》 to open the door of loneliness in our hearts, and in loneliness, experience the depth and breadth of life, and welcome the bright dawn of your own.
As the theme song to the Academy Award-winning film 《The Graduate》 and one of the most iconic pieces of music of all time, this song has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world, spanning more than half a century, and has been sung for a long time.
🎵
Every time I hear this song 《Valder Fields》 by Toams Wells,
It's like sitting alone in the soft grass.
The warm afternoon sunlight is spreading gently on you.
White clouds roaming in the blue sky
The breeze smells of earth
and caresses your face.
In front of you are mountains and lakes.
Cows and goats are grazing.
It's peaceful and quiet.
The upbeat yet serene rhythms and gentle yet moving lyrics quiet every restless soul.
🎵
This is a Scandinavian ballad about a two-way crush called 《Say Hello》, sung by Roise Thomas and Sufjan Stevens.
The whole song is sweet and youthful, perfectly illustrating the nervousness, hesitation and anticipation of a crush.
If you meet someone you like, look them in the eye and say hello.
🎵
《Happy (I Used To Be)》,sung by the Norwegian singer-songwriter Egil Olsen, unique Nordic temperament, warm and continuous voice, slowly flowing with the sadness of the lazy mood, with minimalist and moving songs known as one of Norway's best live performers!
This song is a slow way to grieve, perfect for a quiet night or drunk moments to enjoy.
————
Listen to reso-music! Listen to how folk songs make the world feel right. Joy, sadness, frustration, secret love, homesickness, friendship, etc., there is always a feeling that can RESOnate with you.

The art style of Cloud Castle is absolute ass bro why are their eyes so big
Idk man it just looks.... off
I wish they brought back the og art style like Blue Scarab Hunt because that was gorgeous
Well if you’re referring to the book's artstyle as a whole, then calm down buddy the illustrations as a whole are pretty good all things considered (believe me some of the illustrations in the later books are waaaaayyyyy iffier)
But if you are referring to Danilo Barozzi’s illustrations in the book then uhhhhh… yeah I don’t blame you, I didn’t like the big anime irises either, she didn’t cook with this one,,,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The interesting thing is Barozzi also did pieces for Secret of the Snow and those looked fine (she did well enough that I have to squint to determine which ones were done by her). My guess is either she did a lot of the illustrations for the latter half of SotS and we just got used to it, or it’s because the artstyle of special editions 2 and 3 were more… experimental? Books 4 onwards developed a very specific… look for the artstyle that adhered very closely to the main book illustrations of Spanish Dance Mission onwards, thus the illustrators had to follow suit, resulting in whatever looks off to look especially off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Even with this set of pictures, I’m only about 70% sure these are Barozzi’s because of how alike yet different the styles are from each other in the book. The first one could be Barozzi’s, but it could also be Giuseppe Facciotto’s, since he also did illustrations for SotS and his stylization means he sometimes puts the eyes really close to each other in a way that’s weird but still makes sense somehow.) On the contrary, books 2 and 3 (and I would probably even include book 1 there) had a more experimental look to the illustrations, which seems to be based more on (and this is just a theory of mine) Giuseppe Facciotto’s iconic work for the covers of Mouseford Academy books 2-12, 14, 15 and 17 in the English books (he did waaayyy more covers for the Italian Mouseford books— he was basically the cover guy for the Mouseford books for a WHILE) as well as the books from Spanish Dance Mission to Lost Letters. If you’re wondering why those covers go as hard as they do, then now you know why.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(These aren’t all of Facciotto’s works for the covers we know in English but you can see that he popped off <3)
But yeah as you can see with special editions 2 and 3, the art direction seems to be heavily inspired by Facciotto’s artstyle.
However, when Barbara Pellizzari’s works became the aesthetic poster child of the books’ brand, that was reflected in the illustrations and how their aesthetic changed, as seen in the main books and how they look currently, special editions 4-9, and the Treasure Seekers trilogy.
This new profile thing of the girls? This was done by Pellizzari (coloring was done by Flavio Ferron), and thus it became the main reference for how the girls look in the book’s illustrations.
Tumblr media
And it’s not just in the general direction to the artists for how to draw the Thea Sisters, but also in the direction given to the colorists. Alessandro Muscillo was the colorist for the special edition books since book 1 and the Treasure Seekers trilogy, and you can see that the direction for the style varied through books 1-3, like maybe direction was experimenting with the mood the illustrations were to convey, beginning with the cartoony and bright colors of book 1, easing into the more grounded and layered palettes of books 2 and 3
Then book 4 was when they transitioned to using digital art /j
I jest, but seriously book 4 was the debut of the coloring style we end up keeping for the rest of the special editions and for all of Treasure Seekers, which is very… bright :D
(I would show more picture examples but I manually took pictures of my physical copies for the Cloud Castle and SotS illustrations and gwuh I’m too lazy to grab my entire collection just to take pictures,,)
Bright as in like… the colors are very defined and saturated. I dunno how to describe it, but when you see it, you get what I mean. It’s very bright and pretty and colorful and it stands out. There are still variations that happen on occasion (Star Fairies in particular uses a good dose of airbrush for the lighting and shadow effects, and Crystal Fairies looks like someone had a bit of fun using sparkle brushes), but other than that, it’s very bright. I don’t hate it, but I do acknowledge that yeah, if I was introduced to the series when it had fully transitioned to the new style, I never would’ve gotten into the series in the first place, because the older books had something that didn’t make it feel specifically catered to girls. The colors were bright, but not too bright. Colorful, but unified. They weren’t that complicated, and they didn’t have to be because the colorists (plural, there were at least 3 per book once upon a time) were popping the hell off with the colors they were given. But y’know, the newer books’ consistent style did give me a good spot to practice drawing mouse furries so I’m not complaining too much about the newer style, haha.
(Tiny baby E’s (it’s literally from 2020 what’re you on about mate) her first mouse Violet drawing using Barbara Pellizzari’s artstyle in Treasure Seekers 1 as an anatomy guide!!)
Tumblr media
With that said tho, yeah I miss the old books -m- dunno if it’d fit the aesthetic of the special editions but m a n we could’ve had it and it probably would’ve looked cool
Also the illustrations go way harder in the older books, like Prince's Emerald? I've talked about Prince's Emerald and how it goes hard before, and I still stand by it and say that it does in fact still go hard
Maybe it won't fit the uh splash of color they gave the hardcovers, but imagine they grabbed Giulia Basile's coloring work for the graphic novels and used that as sort've a basis for the coloring style of the hardcovers. Not exactly the same-- would probably still add a touch of whimsical watercolor and/or paint to the very cel-shaded style, but we could've had something pretty dope -m-
Anyway that's my ramble simultaneously defending the hardcovers' artstyle and reminiscing on what could've been haha
#geronimo stilton#thea stilton#thea sisters#questions with e#rambles#the style of the older books is gorgeous but the main thing I'm wondering is can it pull off fantastical whimsy#that's the main thing i dunno if it can do (i would love to be proven wrong tho)#the style is so grounded that i'm wondering if it can pull off what the hardcovers needed it to do#which is convey the otherworldly fantastical thrill of exploring the fantasy worlds (which uh the newer books were able to do but#my main gripe is that fantasy and reality are near indistinguishable in vibes coloring-wise#sure there are sparkles and stuff is more saturated but the girls' dorm in book 4 still has the same-ish feel of the land of clouds#i dunno what it is. the bright colors just feel mundane somehow and don't take a shift when returning to reality)#looked at my books again and i think it might be the fact that the later books have no grounding color?#compare book 3 to book 5 and you'll see it the most distinctly methinks#the newer coloring style doesn't have a color that grounds the illustrations' palettes and thus everything's always bright 100% of the time#the girls' colors are always at their most saturated#like they're always under broad daylight in terms of lighting#it's not eyebleeding or anything but they don't look affected by the lighting in the setting they're currently in#and the result is it looks.... meh?#we get so used to the bright colors that they end up looking meh somehow#i'm not an art expert by any means this is just my observations as someone with a little too much brainrot
