Celebrities I Think Shifted Here~
Anne Hathaway~
I’m sorry, she’s too unproblematic, she’s been an icon for years, she ages like a fine wine, and the Shakespeare thing? C’mon, that’s not a coincidence
Walker Scobell~
Dude spends his entire childhood telling everyone he is Percy Jackson, only to become Percy himself? Is absolutely obsessed with Marvel, ends up in a movie with Deadpool, Bruce Banner, and Gamora? And also Mobius (in a different film, but the point stands). No one is just that lucky.
Taylor Swift
No one manages to get that famous that fast and young while also being so self centered and, quite honestly, annoying, for as little talent as she actually has. Too much drama around her, too many heartthrob boyfriends, too many queer rumors, and too many famous friends who don’t make sense at all. Having said that, I don’t like her much, so that might have something to do with it. I don’t know.
Sabrina Carpenter~
I’m sorry, but this girl has had a model career. She’s kind, funny, extremely talented, and has had very minor celebrity drama that has only added to her success. Not to mention it makes zero sense for her to be dating the Irish guy, and yet here she is, dating the Irish guy. And I’m not even saying that negatively, he’s hot as fuck. She, in an of herself, became a TikTok trend, not just her song, and she did this twice in, like, two months. She’s iconic, she’s an amazing actress, she’s inspirational (I know I wanted to be just like her when I was a kid).
Josh Gates
While I’m not entirely sure everyone counts him as a celebrity, but in my home, he definitely is. He’s been a part of sooo many discoveries and he’s played such a massive part in modern history. Most of the history stuff I know came from him, not textbooks.
Let me know if you have any more, I’d love to hear y’all’s opinions on this, too! (Swifties don’t come for me)

Movie Musical Divas Tournament: Round 1
Dorothy Dandridge (1922-1965) Carmen Jones (1954) as Carmen Jones | Porgy and Bess (1959) as Bess
"The second Black actress to be nominated for an Oscar. She worked at the Cotton Club, was married to a Nicholas Brother. Ms. Dandridge did not want to take on the stereotypical roles offered to her at the time, which limited her career due to the racism of the film industry. Nonetheless, the roles she did take on remain incredibly iconic." - anonymous
Ann-Margret (1941- ) Bye Bye Birdie (1963, Kim McAfee) | Viva Las Vegas (1964) Rusty Martin) | Newsies (1992, Medda Larkson) | State Fair (1962) - Emily Porter | The Pleasure Seekers (1964) - Fran Hobson | Tommy (1975) - Nora Walker
"The reason I was obsessed with Bye Bye Birdie as a small child! She was not supposed to be the lead of that movie but she ATE. (Sorry you got upstaged, Dick Van Dyke, I love you too.)" - anonymous

The most revolutionary thing Florida students can do is to start underground libraries away from the prying eyes of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and his lackeys.
“The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison. “Forever” by Judi Blume. “Slaughterhouse-Five” by Kurt Vonnegut. All have been pulled from the shelves of some Florida schools, according to the latest list compiled by the Florida Department of Education tallying books removed by local school districts. Recent changes to state law have empowered parents and residents to challenge school library books and required districts to submit an annual report to the state detailing which books have been restricted in their schools. Florida continues to lead the country in pulling books from school libraries, according to analyses by the American Library Association and the advocacy group PEN America. “A restriction of access is a restriction on one’s freedom to read,” said Kasey Meehan of PEN America. “Students lose the ability to access books that mirror their own lived experiences, to access books that help them learn and empathize with people who … have different life experiences.” The list released for the 2023-2024 school year includes titles by American literary icons like Maya Angelou, Flannery O’Connor and Richard Wright, as well as books that have become top targets for censorship across the country because they feature LGBTQ+ characters, discussions of gender and sexuality, and descriptions of sexual encounters, such as “All Boys Aren’t Blue” by George Johnson and “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe. Conservative advocates have labeled such content “pornographic.” Also on the list of books removed from libraries are accounts of the Holocaust, such as “Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation” and “Sophie’s Choice.” So is a graphic novel adaptation of “1984,” George Orwell’s seminal work on censorship and surveillance. “Everywhere from Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, ‘Slaughterhouse-Five’, George Orwell,” said Stephana Farrell, a co-founder of the Florida Freedom to Read Project, which tracks book challenges in the state. “If you take the time to look at that list, you will recognize that there is an issue with … this movement.”
Ron DeSantis still hasn't convinced his rubber stamp legislature to pass laws to break into your home and confiscate your books. Though it may not be a good idea to tell your MAGA neighbor that you're stockpiling books by Toni Morrison, George Orwell, Anne Frank, Kurt Vonnegut, and Richard Wright.

Hi again! :) I just started to watch Scooby Doo and Guess Who today, and I love the concept of introducing celebs. I love it because its not new, it's a callback to the og episodes with sonny and Cher, and batman!
If the show hadn't been cancelled, who would you want to guest star? (I watched a clip of the gang meeting their voice actors and it made my day, I was feeling down. I only thought they would meet frank welker too so it was a really nice surprise!)
Hi!
This will be divided between real people and fictional characters.

John Wayne
Pentatonix

Chris Tucker (preferably working with Jackie)
Mister Rogers (you can’t convince me that the persona he put for his show wasn’t his real self)
The Kratt Brothers
Steve Irwin
Sandra Bullock
Micheal Jordon
Charlize Theron
Ben Affleck
Anne Hathaway
Margot Robbie
Cate Blanchett
Judi Dench
Julie Andrews

Wizard of Oz cast (either original book or MGM’s iconic film)

What songs remind you of Oliver and Sarah? Either as a ship or their individual characters? If you don’t mind me asking
I am so sorry for how long it took me to answer your question. The last couple of weeks have been crazy.
Yes, so many 😉 most are for both since they are very similar in character and their stories and demons are pretty much a reflection of the other, at least in my opinion.
Canarrow:
The songs
Gang Gang - Nova Rockafella,
Ghost - Tom MacDonald,
Army - Ellie Goulding,
Always remember us this way - Lady Gaga,
Rewrite the Stars - Anne-Marie & James Arthur,
Parachute - Ingrid Michaelson,
Him & I - G-Eazy & Halsey,
Kill for you - Eminem & Skylar Grey,
Remind me - Brad Paisley feat. Carrie Underwood,
I want Crazy - Hunter Hayes,
Secret love - Little Mix,
Can't say no - Rae Garvey,
Wild Love - Rae Garvey,
The Only One & Don't give me those eyes - James Blunt,
Oath - Cher Lloyd feat. Becky G,
Freunde - Pur,
Backup & New Day - Lunik,
Can you hold me - NF feat. Britt Nicole,
Mirror - Justin Timberlake,
Mein Mädchen - Fler
Sweeter than fiction - Taylor Swift
Us against the world - Westlife
Lullaby - Nickelback,
Lucky ones - Lana del Rey,
Heaven - Gotthard,
are just a handful that make me think of them as a couple or friends.
Leave a light on - Tom Walker,
Paralyzed - NF,
Battle Scars - Guy Sebastion feat. Lupe Fiasco and most songs from Soldier Hard or Icon for Hire remind me of Oliver and some Sara too.
Oliver:
Just a man & I can't sleep - Tom MacDonald,
Difficult & Going through Changes - Eminem,
Astronaut - Simple Plan,
Comfortably Numb - Roger Waters,
Numb - Linkin Park,
The coldest night & Traces of sadness - Vanilla Ninja
These are mostly for both of them:
Happy hurts - Icon for Hire,
Triggers - Soldier Hard,
Mansion - NF,
Outside the Wall - Pink Floyd
Sara:
Chasing Twisters - Delta Rae,
Skin - Sixx A.M.
Those are the ones that just came to mind but there are so many more I missed for sure, lol. Some of these might have inspired a story or two ;)
Do you have songs that make you think of them?

Yunaissance SP child roundup, p2
Yuna’s neighbours have been very busy procreating, so let’s see who Shara will be growing up alongside!
First up!
Judy Jones, born to my infamous “catsim” Irena Jones and Lloyd Nesbit by @moocha-muses. Obsessed with her!
The Woodbine twins Xander and Brynne, born to Abigail O’Rourke and Theresa Woodbine.
The Tak sisters, Tilly and Muriel. Tilly was born to Jae-Kyung Tak and Matteo Flores-Fonseca, and Jae-Kyung and a PT after he got abducted. Living for an alien child with a fairly severe face named MURIEL.
Lissa Hurley, born to Richard Hurley and Tanika King. That is some serious mom hair for a little girl.
Ripley Rossi, born to icons Sheena Rossi and Tamsin Henry. Love that she’s a lot like Tamsin but with red hair! Alpha hair queen in the making.
Elijah Walker, born to “Shark Eyes” Walker and Zenith Chastain. RIP to Zenith’s genes, apparently.
Emmanuel Harbin, born to Sasha Harbin and Asha Nazari. Love him!
Melinda O’Neill, born to Ann O’Neill and her apparent side-piece Nicole Hernandez. I guess Ann’s wife Laura needed a break!

Thanks all for sharing your joys and recommendations! I'm collating the list (so far) here for myself/y'all:
Books that were recommended that I already read & loved & recommend myself :)
The Witch King by Martha Wells - after a betrayal, a tired demon helps his angry lesbian witch best friend go on a quest to rescue the witch's stoic paladin wife
Gideon the Ninth / the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir - engaging puzzlebox story set in a spacefaring necromantic cult, multilayered & twisty worldbuilding, intense moral complexity
This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone - lyrical sapphic love letters between two agents on either side of a violent war across time and space
The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison - A young man unexpectedly becomes emperor and befuddles the court with his kindness
The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud (though I hear there's a fourth book now!) - GREAT! Engaging, and I wouldn't describe it as "feel good." Sort of like Howl's Moving Castle if it was told from Calcifer's POV and also Howl was an adolescent British wizard who was trying to grow up to be evil in a British empire running on wizardry
Sunshine by Robin McKinley - a baker who specializes in cinnamon rolls escapes a vampire abduction--unheard of--and returns to baking cinnamon rolls. AMAZING first person rambling POV & also always makes me want to run off and start an imaginary bakery
The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Discworld by Terry Pratchett
The Queen’s Thief by Megan Whalen Turner - stunning, engaging, delightful, twisty, read these sixteen million times and find some new double meaning every time. A young thief brags he can steal anything; and he's right.
Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow by Orson Scott Card
So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane - iconic worldbuilding, lengthy ongoing series by a delightful author
The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong Xu
The Inheritance Trilogy by NK Jemisin

hey friends I’m looking for some reading recommendations!
I’ve just been rereading old favorites, which is a joy, but I’m hankering for something new to surprise me and capture me. I’m open to anything but have particular soft spots for:
- narrators or POV characters with distinctive, atypical voices, perspectives, or assumptions who make an ordinary or extraordinary world more interesting by being seen through their lens (ex. Martha Wells’ Murderbot, owlet’s This, You Protect)
- clever, precise plotting and storytelling such that final conclusions or reveals click together like delightful, unexpected but perfectly predictable clockwork— the sort that you can see obviously in the first chapter but only after you’ve read the last page; stories where the authors trust the reader to pay attention and figure stuff out (ex. Megan Whalen Turner’s The Queen’s Thief series, The Westing Game, Pamela Dean’s The Secret Country)
- worldbuilding with depth and texture — it feels explorable, immersive, like you could study it, like you could get lost, like other stories are going on just off the page (The Secret Countey gets a second honorary mention here, great book, I highly recommend)
- characters you can root for, especially ones that are slowly, quietly, unregretfully tearing themselves apart for something they care about (Kip Mdang from Hands of the Emperor, Newt from Designations Congruent with Things, Nico D’Angelo from the Percy Jackson books, Arthur in rageprufrock’s Presque Vu)
I like stories with momentum, stories that swallow you. I like beautiful things. I like stories that surprise me and make me think. Help a gal out? What stories have captured you?

Last, but certainly not least at the #1 spot is Latto. Before she took the stage to perform "The Big Energy" singer rocked the pink carpet. Her loose fitting dress resembled a button down shirt, made of sheer black fabric with a plunging deep neckline. #39 Guys and Dolls (1955)
Only a good woman can save a man from the dangers of gambling, or Peaky Blinders: The Musical.
Gonna to be honest, for as iconic as Guys and Dolls is, my only exposure to it up until now was Frank Sinatra's buttery voice belting out "Luck Be a Lady", and Robert's desire to play Sky Masterson on Grace and Frankie. When my friend Claire and I took a road trip this past October, we spent 9 hours in the car listening to showtunes like two totally normal people with great tastes in music. That was the first time I had actually listened to this show and sonically fell in love with Adelaide. Much like Leslie Ann Warren in Victor/Victoria and Ellen Greene in Little Shop of Horrors, if a blonde does a baby voice it's absolutely over for me.
Seriously, stick a fork in me, I'm done.
youtube
Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra), New York City's most infamous bookkeeper, is trying to arrange a saucy getaway with him and 20-30 of his greatest pals so they trade funds in a fun way. Because some mouthy brunette has been carting a marching band all over town singing "gambling is evil", the police have picked up their pursuit of any illegal gambling practices, putting Nathan's operation further underground. The one place that will even consider housing Mr. Detroit's shenanigans is asking for $1k up front to mitigate the risk of being caught, which of course Nathan doesn't have. Thankfully for him, notorious gambler Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) is in town, and Nathan gets the bright idea to make Sky take a bet he can't possibly win to earn the start-up cash.
When Nathan's initial attempt to turn donuts into dollars fails (in the most literal sense), Mr. Detroit suddenly gets the same idea Paul Walker did in She's All That - Make a bet that Sky can't convince the ugly girl who hates everything go to a trip to Havana with him. In 24 hours. Dick-swinging Sky can't back down from the ultimate test of his romantic prowess and takes the bet. Nathan starts congratulating himself prematurely because the woman he's chosen as a victim to this particular scheme is Howl's own Grandma Sophie Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons), the uptight broad whose puritan values has been sticking a wrench in his well-oiled money making machine. Two birds, one stone.
Mr. Masterson is off to the races, immediately introducing his smarmy attractive face to Miss Brown at her place of employment. Brother Sky says he wants Sarah to reform him, and she's smart enough to know that he's fucking with her. Her colleagues are not as hip to his scheme, however, and go out of their way to try and snag a date for their sex-deprived leader. His proposal to eat dinner with him in Cuba immediately rings sex trafficking bells all down the street, and she rebuffs his advances by slapping him one good.
High off his apparent genius, Nathan rides his good feelings to visit his perpetual fiancé Adelaide (Vivian Blaine) at her place of employment, the Hot Box. Adelaide is as keen on Nathan's gambling as Sarah Brown is, which causes Nathan to hide his extracurricular activities from her since since he's seriously gun-shy about marrying her, stringing her along the last 14 fucking years. Adelaide copes with this in a totally normal way, by sneezing incessantly and inventing an entirely different life with 5 children, writing fanfiction to send to her mother every few months about her and Nathan's happy marriage. When she finds out from her co-worker that Nathan's crap game is still happening that weekend, she kicks that deadbeat out and reevaluates wasting all her time on a dude who's constantly back on his bullshit.
Seriously, how do you betray a woman in cat ears that asks you to pet her poppa, pet her good? Nathan, you're a moron.
youtube
Nathan tries to justify his heartbreak to his fellas by stating the entire world is pussy-whipped, and Sky does his best to disprove this theory by blackmailing Sarah Brown into going to dinner with him for Nathan's money. Once Sky discovers the mission will close without some gen-u-wine sinners at the next midnight meeting, he reiterates his offer to trade dinner in exchange for delivering a roomful of repentant men Sarah can save for Jesus. With her feet against the fire, she reluctantly agrees to his terms. Nathan is sickened to hear his plan for quick cash is foiled because he just agreed to marry Adelaide in front of a cop in order to cover up the reason all his "best buddies" were loitering in a diner waiting to hear the location for his crap game.
Sky takes Sarah to Cuba and gets her drunk on milkshakes, which sounds TERRIBLE to someone whose drink of choice used to be white russians and has since learned to treat their stomach better. After they get into a bar fight cause Sky can't keep his hands to himself, Sarah comes on strong to him, and instead of fucking the shit out of her, Sky admits the reason he dragged her there. Sarah is completely unfazed by this, probably because she has enough rum in her system to kill a race horse, and they fly back to New York where they confess their insta-love to each other.
youtube
While Sky and Sarah are riding high off of dairy farts, Nathan gets the bright idea to um... repurpose the mission to host his gambling weekend/bachelor party. This goes swimmingly until Sarah, Sky and the police find them, and they're forced literally underground to continue their illegal activities. After breaking the news to Adelaide that Nathan isn't going to marry her, again, Sky hunts down the scumbags to make good on his marker to Sarah. Two days on a gambling bender and these men are crawling in literal sewage to toss a few dollars on a dice game.
Sky makes the bet of a lifetime, 1k for each soul he needs to save repenting at the midnight meeting, on the outcome of one roll of the dice. We are then treated to Marlon Brando singing "Luck Be a Lady" and I feel cheated.

It's not that I don't like Marlon Brando - This movie was actually the first time I really experienced what I can assume is his charm. The only exposure I had to him before this was Don Juan DeMarco and Apocolypse Now, which I hate on principal because I was forced to read Heart of Darkness in high school. Sky Masterson is a real slimeball, but Marlon Brando's expressive eyes make you forgive a laundry list of sins. But Marlon does the same shit that Rex Harrison does where he's basically monologuing to a tune. And, y'know, Frank Sinatra is right there watching this whole thing go down.
I'm not saying Frank Sinatra should have been Sky Masterson, as I think his casting as Nathan Detroit was pretty spot-on. And without Marlon's performance in Guys and Dolls Barbra Streisand might have never overcome her stage fright, so at least we got that out of whatever this is. On the other hand, it also sounds like he jerked Rita Moreno around for 8 years, so I'm not going to defend Marlon too much.
Sky ultimately is true to his word, funneling the entire sewer's worth of rats into Sarah Brown's School for Wayward Gamblers.
youtube
Y'all know how much I love Frankie, but Stubby Kaye delivers my favorite performance in the entire film with "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat". It comes out of nowhere and it's executed perfectly - his voice is gorgeous and his facial expressions are so earnest they garner full belly laughs out of me. The way he picks up his hat so sheepishly and sits back down at the end of the song knocks me out every time.
Sarah is so turned on by Sky's gesture she decides to marry him, and he presumably drags Nathan to the altar for Adelaide's sake to make it a double wedding. While this is supposed to be read as redemption, I'm pretty sure Adelaide and Sarah are going to be in a world of hurt being chained to a couple of no-good gangsters for the rest of their lives. Adelaide, you deserved better.
Overall, I think Guys and Dolls is pretty entertaining and has some stellar performances from its featured cast. Vivian Blaine immediately grabbed my heart and I couldn't help but feel for her every time Frank Sinatra let her down. But like, honestly, Sinatra plays embarrassment and guilt pretty well, and I hated myself every time I wanted her to forgive him.
Jean Simmons similarly does a great job at portraying Sarah, as she excellently tows the line between an ambitious religious zealot and a woman who wants to break free of the expectations placed on her and have a good time. While I didn't exactly enjoy watching her profess her love to Marlon Brando, her performance of "If I Were a Bell" is the kind of infectious joy that gets stuck in your head.
And of course Stubby as Nicely-Nicely Johnson - GUYS SIT DOWN YOU'RE ROCKIN' THE BOAT IS SO GOOD DON'T SKIP WATCHING IT.
Oh, and Marlon was fine, I guess, but I'm not super upset he didn't pursue other musicals after this.

This is why everyone should go and watch Gentleman Jack.
BONNETS
There are bonnets. Some are absolutely ridiculous and I love them. They lean into the period's insanely poofy sleeves and use of colours. But people wear bonnets and hats when they go calling on people, I think the only time that hair is down is when people are ill, in bed, or otherwise haven't gotten up to make themselves presentable yet.
2. Hairstyling and fashion!
While not all of the clothes are 100% accurate to historical fashion they do very much make use of historical fashion (Anne Lister's hair not being as elaborately curled as other women's, but still using period styles). As aforementioned, the sleeves are so much. There are gloves. There are fancy little hair things. Clothing also accounts for class, personality, the social engagement in question - people have worn out clothes, clothes that they've clearly been working in, formal servants clothes and dirtied miner's clothes, there's clothes that have been repurposed that are clearly clothes that fell out of fashion remade to keep them useful.
But for now, I will show you the hair, because the use of buckle-style ringlets for Anne Lister to show her more "fuck you, I am doing that" attitude with period fashions (Albeit, more a men's fashion; actual historical Anne Lister did do the whole insane curls and we have portraits to prove it) next to Anne Walker's full on insane curls everywhere period-typical style.
3. Actual Historical Lesbians
Anne Lister and Anne Walker actually existed. They had a relationship. Anne Lister's diaries are how we know so much of her entire life. Anne Lister's attitudes to both religion and her love of women were things written about in her diaries - and I want to be clear for people unaware she reconciled them. She wasn't the archetypal "unhappy gay", unable to reconcile desires with faith - there was nothing in the bible to forbid wlw, she checked, so she went "okay, then" and got on with it. While she and Anne Walker weren't legally married, they did have a small ceremony to affirm their importance to each other.
Although Lister had met her on various occasions in the 1820s, Ann Walker, who by 1832 had become a wealthy heiress, took on a much more substantial role in Lister's life.[16] Eventually the women took communion together on Easter Sunday (30 March) 1834 in Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, York, and thereafter considered themselves married, but without legal recognition. The church has been described as "an icon for what is interpreted as the site of the first lesbian marriage to be held in Britain", and the building now hosts a commemorative blue plaque.[17] The couple lived together at Shibden Hall until Lister's death in 1840.
Actual, historical Lesbians.
Also, everyone should watch this edit, it's what my sibs showed me to get me to watch the show:

I know I can't stop complaining about costuming inaccuracies in period dramas, but sometimes I just think about the excuses costume designers come up with and it really gets me irritated.
"Well, 1920s clothes looked frumpy. I'm IMPROVING them for modern audiences!"
"I'm breaking stereotypes so this doesn't look like every other period film! So I'm making it look nothing like the period <3"
#gentleman jack#video#historical fashion#im not joking the costuming in gentleman jack are fantastic#it fits the economic situation of each family and the social engagement#Anne Walker has the POOFIEST SLEEVES#which is entirely accurate!#but there's also a part when we see her casually and she's wearing what's clearly an old dress repurposed into a housecoat#it's fantastic#Youtube
