I'm sure someone has already submitted Hedy Lamarr because she was spectacularly beautiful, and a very strong lady too: she fled both an abusive marriage AND nazi persecution at a very young age and rebuilt a life for herself pursuing her love for acting all on her own!! Ivankov's Drag Race

I watch a lot of RuPaul's Drag Race 'cause I love drag and reality TV and I'm queer as fuck. So here's the most self-indulgent thing I've ever written for day 4 of @sanusoweek, presented 100% on-time :P

Welcome to season 12 of Ivankov's Drag Race; a reality show where a group of drag artists compete to snatch the crown and win a prize of $150,000!

JUDGES: Ivankov (Host & Main Judge), Bon Clay, and Inazuma. Every week they are joined by famous drag artists, fashion icons, musicians, and queer allies, who share their opinions and provide feedback.

COMPETITORS: Sanji, Usopp, Brook, Doll, Caesar Clown, Pudding, Chuu, Helmeppo, Izo, Bartolomeo, Buggy the Clown, Catarina, and Perona.

WEEK ONE: The first episodes of the season are a double premiere where the performers show off their talents, personalities, and personal styles. No eliminations.

WEEK TWO: This week the competitors are participating in a scripted acting challenge. As the top two performers during the talent show, Brook and Izo are appointed team captains and choose their teams.

Team Brook includes Sanji, Usopp, Pudding, Bartolomeo, and Perona. Team Izo has Buggy, Caesar, Helmeppo, Doll, Catarina, and Chuu. The winner of the week is Usopp!

The audience gets their first glimpse of the Sanji-Pudding-Usopp love triangle as both Usopp and Pudding bond with Sanji during the challenge.

Chuu and Doll are in the bottom and lip sync for their lives, ultimately resulting in Chuu being eliminated.

WEEK THREE: This week, the contestants are challenged to design and create a runway outfit that represents their drag persona. Sanji is stressed because he wears pretty looks, he doesn't sew them. He sidles over to his new friend Usopp and doesn't hesitate to flirt with him in hopes of getting some help creating his look. Usopp flirts back and is more than happy to provide some assistance. In the confessionals, Pudding reveals that she isn't happy that Sanji went to Usopp for help when her style is so much better than his.

Perona wins the challenge and Bartolomeo absolutely demolishes Helmeppo in the lip sync and sends him home.

WEEK FOUR: The contestants are split into teams to pitch a television show of their creation. (Sanji & Pudding, Buggy & Usopp, Izo & Catarina, Barto & Perona, and Doll, Brook, & Caesar).

Buggy and Usopp share a win after they deliver a hilarious performance. Doll and Caesar have a massive disagreement which affects their performance in the challenge and lands them in the bottom. Their argument in Untucked goes down in Drag Race herstory. Doll is sent home after lipsyncing against Caesar.

WEEK FIVE: This week is the much-anticipated girl group challenge! Sanji, Usopp, Barto, Perona, and Izo perform a high-energy pop number while Buggy, Brook, Catarina, Caesar, and Pudding dance to sultry, seductive choreo.

Sanji is this week's winner and after battling Buggy, Caesar is sent home.

WEEK SIX: In the second of the season's design challenge, the contestants must create a runway look worthy of royalty. Once again, Sanji finds his way over to Usopp for assistance and a round of flirting. A jealous Pudding comments that Sanji should ask for help from someone who actually has a good sense of style since Usopp's taste level has come into question in the past. Cue passive-aggressive comments from both of them throughout the rest of the episode.

Izo is this week's winner and Catarina is sent home after losing to Buggy in the lip sync.

WEEK SEVEN: At the halfway point of the competition, the girls do celebrity impersonations for the infamous Snatch Game challenge.

Usopp's amazing impersonations gain him another challenge win. There is a sweet moment between him and Sanji in Untucked when he encourages a stressed-out Sanji who landed in the bottom three.

Izo is sent home after an emotional lip sync with Sanji.

WEEK EIGHT: This week, the remaining competitors perform in a musical! As last week's winner, Usopp is given the power to assign roles, which doesn't bode well for Pudding, who has been planting seeds of doubt in the mind of an anxious Usopp.

Brook wins the challenge after his spectacular performance as the lead in the musical. Pudding wins against Perona in a lipsync that many fans think should've been a double shantay.

WEEK NINE: The competitors show off three runway looks for the Grand Line Ball! The first look is Marine Madness and the second is Pirate Couture, both brought from home. The third look, Devil Fruitiness, must be created in the workroom and to no one's surprise, Sanji is over by Usopp's workstation. He seems to have learned a lot from his lessons from Usopp though, so they spend their time laughing and flirting as they create their looks.

Pudding wins the challenge and Buggy wins his lipsync over Bartolomeo.

WEEK TEN: The top five queens give makeovers to young queers, putting them in drag and creating a family resemblance between them.

After getting negative critiques, Pudding has a bit of a breakdown in Untucked this week, taking her frustrations out on Usopp and resulting in a heated argument. Brook calms down Usopp and Sanji reels in Pudding.

Sanji wins his second challenge and Buggy is sent home after an intense lipsync against Pudding.

WEEK ELEVEN: In the last challenge before the finale, the remaining four competitors are prompted to write, record, and perform a verse to Ivankov's original song, Revolution.

Brook wins the challenge with one of the best verses and performances in Drag Race herstory. Usopp and Pudding land in the bottom and perform an iconic lipsync that ultimately sends Pudding home.

WEEK TWELVE: Before the finale, all of the competitors return for a reunion episode hosted by Ivankov going over all of the season's drama. Pudding is called out by Perona and Bartolomeo for being two-faced and treating Usopp poorly. Ivankov puts the spotlight on Sanji, who is in the middle of the drama between Pudding and Usopp. The Doll vs. Caesar altercation is also re-hashed and goes unresolved.

WEEK THIRTEEN: In front of a live audience, the top three competitors Sanji, Brook, and Usopp do a performance of their choice in a final bid for the crown, which ultimately goes to............ BROOK!!!!!!

To the delight of audiences everywhere, Sanji and Usopp enter into a romantic relationship after the show had finished filming (so by the time the season aired, they'd been dating for about a year!). The fanfiction that is written about them is insane and Sanji is begging Usopp to stop reading it, damn it! They have also resolved the issue between themselves and Pudding and are now very close friends.

Sanji and Usopp go on to star in several other reality shows, their popularity growing with each appearance they make. They become one of the most iconic couples in television history and go down as queer icons.

so i, like half the planet, have been obsessed with brat. i've been playing it everywhere, even my bf says he's nearly memorised it. i've been aware of charli since her true romance days and i quite liked a fair few of her tracks (nuclear seasons, you, black roses, you're the one) but she sounded so different back then. i was obsessed with Fancy when it came out, it was such a fun track. then i've kept an eye on her on and off during the years as i developed an interest for the hyperpop sound (vroom vroom has been in so many of my playlists).

as for brat, i've been positively possessed by so many tracks from it, consecutively: von dutch; club classics; girl, so confusing; apple; b2b; 360 (i was a little late to absolutely love this track but i get it now) and now guess ofc. i've decided that the only nail polish i'm wearing this summer is ugly shades of green.

but, i have to say, at the same time, from her back catalogue, i've become vv fond of Yuck: it's such a banger!! it would have been a really interesting and unique hit in the pop stratosphere had it become more mainstream

so, in the same vein, ofc i'm coming back to the queen (sophie) bc i haven't really made a concerted effort to go through her entire discography and instead focused on a few songs i like: ponyboy, faceshopping, hard

i feel like this is such a good period for pop music, so that's what i've been focusing on, so, naturally, the next thing on my list is The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. such a different vibe from brat but so catchy and fun. i love chappell's aesthetic and i love what she is doing in pop music. her voice and style of singing reminds me a bit of marina. as for tracks, i LOVE hot to go, femininominon, my kink is karma, super graphic ultra modern girl + good luck, babe

the next work i would like to shill for is slayyyter's absolutely perfect album Starfucker. no notes to give, it's literally unskippable. i can't even pick highlights as i would have to list the entire tracklist. i guess my most played would be i love hollywood, dramatic and rhinestone heart, but it's so difficult to choose!

Legally Blonde (2001)

When I saw this movie on the list, I got so excited. Legally Blonde (2001) is probably in my top five favorite movies of all time. We watched this movie all the time when I was growing up, so I have a lot of special memories attached to it. To me, this is a five out of five. Some of the jokes and moments haven’t aged well. However, I still think the overall message of the film holds up. Girls need to see that being intelligent and powerful does not mean you have to sacrifice femininity. So many pieces of media have shown female characters becoming more masculine or trying to appeal to the male gaze to have more power, and I think Legally Blonde (2001) does a good job arguing against this idea. Elle does not dress the way she does for anyone else, she does it because she likes it. While the message of this film is a more surface-level feminist argument, I’m not really expecting in-depth theory from a romantic comedy.

Legally Blonde (2001) follows Elle Woods, a wealthy girl from California, who follows her ex-boyfriend, Warner, to Harvard to get him back. However, winning him back is not as easy as she hoped. Unable to fit in with the east coasters, Elle struggles to find a place for herself in law school and learns that Warner is engaged to someone else. By letting go of that relationship, Elle discovers a passion for law and helping others, like Paulette and Brooke. Ultimately, she realizes that she doesn’t need to pretend to be someone else, or do things for other people, and she surrounds herself with people who like her for her. The tone of the movie is very lighthearted and has many iconic lines that people still quote today (“What like it’s hard?”) I ended up re-watching this with a friend, and she was shocked with how much of this movie I had memorized.

I do adore this movie, but as an adult, I noticed moments that bothered me more than they did when I was younger. The biggest was the body shaming and early-2000s diet culture. I found myself cringing at Brooke Windham’s whole plot about liposuction, or the comments about losing weight and going down sizes Unfortunately, this is par for the course for early 2000s movies, but I think this is a potentially large turn-off for folks who are not emotionally attached the same way I am. Additionally, I also struggled with some of the stereotyping. There are a few queer background characters, and I do think they have funny moments, sometimes it relies a bit too much on stereotypes. The only context we see gay men in relates to fashion or beauty, and the only lesbian character is mean and angry. I think it would’ve been a lot more interesting if Enid, the aforementioned lesbian, had been an ally to Elle instead of a foe. They have a lot more in common than different.

Another thing I noticed about this movie was the perspective. A majority of movies from the early 2000s, and still today, fall victim to the male gaze. Even in this movie, there are a few moments that sort of do that (the scene where she is getting ready and the bunny costume). However, I would like to argue that most of this film is filtered through the female gaze. Elle is a hyper-feminine person, obsessed with pink and all different kinds of fashion. Most guys I know are not really into that women who dress like that, but my fellow queer women friends adore Elle and her outfits and find them attractive. Sure, not every queer woman likes this femme look, but there are a lot who do. Another example is the love interest. Movies under the male gaze often have the girl end up with the buff, successful main guy. But Elle ends up with the soft-spoken, supporting guy who wears sweater vests. Again, in very generalized terms, love interests like this appear most often for the female gaze. If this movie had been targeted at men, Elle would wear super revealing sexy outfits instead of coordinate pieces and bubble gum pink dresses.

            While Legally Blonde (2001) isn’t for everyone – I have a large soft spot for this film. I understand why it’s a blockbuster.

A work of Art: Terrifier 2 Review

  9 years ago, A soon-to-be horror icon was born, and his name is Art the Clown who was previously played by Mike Gianelli in the film “All Hallows Eve”. Art the Clown is a character I have been wanting to talk about on this blog for a while and I’m so happy to be getting an opportunity to talk about this character who is currently played by David Howard Thornton.  This review is going to be in two sections, my spoiler free thoughts on the movie and my spoiler filled thoughts on it. So, here we go.

Terrifier 2 is a 2022 horror film directed by Damien Leone (All Hallows Eve, All Hallows Eve 2, and Terrifer) who also produced this movie. The cast includes David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown, Lauren LaVera as Sienna Shaw, Elliott Fulham as Jonathan Shaw, Sarah Voigt as Barbara Shaw, Amelie McLain as The Little Pale Girl / Emily Crane, Chris Jericho as Burke, Kailey Hyman as Brooke, Casey Hartnett as Allie, Charlie McElveen as Jeff, Johnnath Davis as Ricky, Amy Russ as Allie’s mother, Cory DuVal as Coroner, Samantha Scaffidi as Victoria “Vicky” Heyes, Griffin Santopietro as Eric, Owen Myre as Sean, Felissa Rose as Ms. Principe, Tamara Glynn as Shopping mother, and Nedim Jahić as Travis Bryant.

The plot:

After being resurrected by a sinister entity, Art the Clown returns to Miles County where he begins to target a teenage girl and her younger brother on Halloween.

Spoiler free section:

Positives- One of the many positives I have about Terrifer 2 is the use of practical effects. I must give props to the makeup department as they did an amazing job with the blood and gore in this movie (That probably makes me sound like a sick person) as there is one scene where I wanted to look away but couldn’t. Don’t worry, we will discuss that scene in the spoiler section of this review. For a movie with a low budget, the practical effects look amazing compared to CGI in other movies…but that is just my opinion.

The second positive I have about Terrifer 2 is that the acting was better than part 1, now don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the first one, hell I own it. But the acting in this movie was a step up. David Howard Thornton is a scene stealer every time he is on screen as Art the Clown. He can make you feel afraid and some scenes he will make you laugh (or cry if you are afraid of clowns…) Lauren LaVera is great in the role of Sienna, her performance makes you root for the character and she makes smart decisions in a world where horror characters rarely do that (unless you’re name isn’t Laurie Strode from “Halloween” or Erin from “You’re Next”).

The third and final positive I have about Terrifer 2 is that it is entertaining. It is a throwback to super gory horror movies of the 80’s-90’s with it’s use of practical effects and David Howard Thornton’s performance as Art the Clown…you will not be bored. I’m glad that a movie with a budget of $250,000 earned $11.3 million at the box office and is getting plenty of attention from the internet, news channels, and daytime talk shows which is shocking considering the content that is in this movie.

Negatives:

I surprisingly have two negatives for this movie and that is we don’t learn about Art’s backstory and his motivations. We get hints throughout the movie…but it doesn’t pay off. Another negative I have is the lack of character development. With a runtime of 2 hours and 18 minutes, you would expect some character development. But, don’t let these negatives affect your experience of viewing Terrifier 2 as it has rewatch value.

So, Earlier I talked briefly about a certain scene in the movie where I wanted to look but couldn’t and that is the bedroom scene. In this scene Art the Clown brutally mutilates Allie to the point of beyond recognition and he pours salt and bleach on her body (ouch). Art the Clown breaks her arms like how I break chicken wings to get the meat (I’m sorry that I put that image in your head dear reader.) There were a lot of crunching noises in that scene. There was a second scene I wanted to look away from the screen and that was the post credit scene and, in this scene, Victoria writes “Vicky + Art” with her blood (I’m not even going to say where the blood comes from). After this she gives birth to Art’s head and my reaction to this was “What the hell?!”.

My overall thoughts:

After watching this movie, I have to say that this movie delivers on the bloody ultraviolence Art the Clown is known for, while giving us likeable characters and great acting from the cast. Also, this might be the scariest movie I have seen all year (so far).
