Ok we all love Sofia's interactions with Katya but her and Ice Pick Joe?? Like they only interact directly once onscreen and yet it's so good. The whole conversation is perfect
Like Joe asking what happened to Sofia's leg and her deadpanning "your cats ate it" and he actually LAUGHS? Like come on, how can you not love that

I know this was this whole subtext about Icepick Joe having escaped/survived lobotomy, taking the weapon used against him as his own, and him being thusted into this role of murderous monster because that's just how people are always gonna see him so might as well put the mantel on, but I want to talk about how he's the only character that seems truly happy.
He knows there's no happy ending possible for him ! He know he will never die in his bed of old age ! But that makes him more free than any of the other character. He's the only character that knows he's doomed since the beggining, and that his days are counted. Why, then, try to be "good" ? Why fight the prison of fate? He's laughing through the bars. He decides to have fun while he's alive, to kill Mario, to smile. Nothing can get to him, because he knows he's in a tragic movie. He knows he will die.
Yet he smiles.
Until the clock runs out, he smiles.

Hey I just want to be clear about something.
These are icepicks:
Tumblr media
They're used for chipping ice
These are iceaxes:
Tumblr media
They're used for mountain climbing.
The assassin Mercader struck Trotsky with a modified iceaxe he had hid in his coat.
Trotsky did not die immediately from his injury however, but turned around and fought his attacker until his security came in and took hold of Mercader.
Trotsky hung on until the next day, when he died in hospital with his wife and grandson by his side.
38 years later Mercader himself died, and his fearful last words were about Trotsky, "I know he's waiting for me on the other side."

Y'all!! It's the painting from the Cafe scene in Goncharov (1973)! It's the one you can see over Goncharov's shoulder when Ice Pick Joe is wrapping up leftovers for the cats. I found it in an antique shop the other day, and at first I couldn't figure out why it was so familiar.
On the one hand it sucks that the artist is unknown, but on the other hand it's so fitting to have the shot dominated by the work of an anonymous artist when Goncharov is caught up in the peculiar realization that he knows very little about Joe as a person. That flash of Joe's characterization beautifully underlines the fact that we know so little about Goncharov's inner life that it's easy to wonder if there's anything there to know. I'm so curious if that was a deliberate choice or if it was just a bit of serendipitous set-dressing.

Everyone keeps talking about their gay awakenings with Sofia/Katya or Goncharov/Andrey, but can I just talk about how fulfilling it was as an asexual to see Ice Pick Joe live a fulfilling life and have a happy ending without any romance at all?

ICE PICK JOE APPRECIATION POST
things we really aren't saying enough about absolute fuckmuffin and total babe, Iced Pickle Joseph:
-the scene where he restrains Goncharov instinctively, knowing he's about to do something sooooooo stupid, reading all Gonchy's tells like a frickin therapist? my heart
-when he climbs out of that freezing cold river and his hair is sticking to his head and it still looks good? no wonder the hair and makeup department got an award
-in the same scene when he pulls off his sopping wet shirt and his crucifix is clinging to his chest, the thin silver chain kinda tangled up? my god the symbolism of still carrying his faith despite all his doubts and tribulations, staying true to his homeland, carrying on and upholding a faith he converted to for his wife, and staying true to his word even 10 years after her death. now that's love
-his pecs awooga
-the way he does that knowing little nod when he walks in on Katya and Sofia pretty much having eye sex in that scene. Practically yelling 'love wins' at that point
-the way he waits until he is alone and then completely breaks down when he thinks nobody can hear him, thinking that he's going to have to save the day completely on his own
-the way his biceps bulge when he's swinging that icepick. did anybody else's ovaries explode?
-just his theme in the music, good lord. I've been listening to it on repeat and just the E M O T I O N somebody halp
-the way he painstakingly tunes every clock at the start. Just amaing symbolism of 'daylight savings' in the intro when the film progresses to talk about how short life is. like you can just see the dedication and patience in his eyes, his careful hands, the way he takes such care turning the springs just so like an orchestra tuning up for the film, just before the first actual music of the film blasts in and the clocks all chime the hour
-the weary sigh before he pulls open the cabinet he keeps locked in his toolshed and pulls out the icepick for the first time in ten years. haunting
just an artful performance really. just spreadin' the love for ice pick joe

By virtue of his name and profession, Ice Pick Joe is a callback to the assassination of Soviet Bolshevik revolutionary Leon Trotsky. When Josef Stalin took power after Lenin’s death, Trotsky fell from grace – and boy did he fall hard. Exiled from the very nation he helped found, Trotsky ended up in Mexico, where he was murdered on Stalin’s orders in 1940 by an assassin wielding an ice pick.
Analyzing Goncharov (1973) through the lens of the Russian Revolution, we can see how Ice Pick Joe represents dashed idealism and the irony of fate. Here is a man who dares challenge the very system that produced him, a man who strives to break the cycle of violence that surrounded him since his birth. His only tool is that of destruction, an ice pick in his hand with which he tries to shape the world.
However, if all you have is an ice pick, everything looks like a skull. The world he created for himself ultimately turns on him, casting him out. Exiled from society and written off as a criminal, Ice Pick Joe knows he can only find true freedom elsewhere. And yet – his attempt to escape on the boat and forge a new existence ends only in tragedy. He is cut down with his own tool, cursed to die by the very ice pick he once used to carve out his place in the world.
Metaphorically, Ice Pick Joe is both Trotsky and Trotsky’s assassin. He is the engineer of a revolution that devours him in the end. In reshaping the world, he reshapes himself...and in reshaping himself, he reshapes the destiny of every character in Goncharov.
