Last Stop: After a pretty active afternoon at Wave Rock and Wendy’s “trauma” of potentially being stuck up another rock on top of the wrong path!!, we bounced out of bed in the freezing cold and had brekky and packed up as fast as our frozen hands could move! The journey to York was definitely through grain country and again, silos that go for a whole block on the outskirts of towns. Unfortunately my silo photos won’t upload. Paddocks that stretch to the horizon and driving through avenues of salmon gums. They are beautiful trees.
York is the oldest inland city in WA apparently, set right on the edge of the Avon River and is full of history from the mid 1800s, particularly after the white settlers came, unfortunately bringing disruption to the Aboriginals. A large police presence, gaol precinct and court house eventuated, to cope with the conflict between Aboroginals and free settlers, pub brawls and petty theft among convicts etc. The largest building in York is the court house and gaol area, which has been well renovated and preserved and is now in the hands of the National Trust. We walked through the old gaol and it’s hard for someone of our era to realise just how brutal and tough things were.
After walking up and down this really pretty and historic Main Street, where nearly every building is heritage listed or should be, we walked over the suspension bridge and had a decent walk along the banks of the Avon, looking for the Heritage Trail which fortunately Wendy found by accident. This is a road about 100 meters long, full of mostly renovated (some in the throes of renovation) very old, pretty, large and small houses, sheds and a church. It’s so good to see these buildings being lived in and cared for.
Tumblr media
We had decided to have a little celebratory dinner out and booked into the Imperial Homestead Bistro before we went for our walk. This used to be the Imperial Hotel 1886, which had fallen into disrepair, but in 2018 a group of farmers pooled resources and the renovation done to the hotel and bistro and dining room is fantastic. We had a really really delicious crispy pork belly entree each and a blob of ice cream and sauce (a bit so-so) and a bottle of WA blanc de blanc which was excellent. The whole bill came to less than our yucky meal at Cocklebiddy Roadhouse, served to us by the two woopy weed guys!!!
The evening was topped off with a nearly cold shower amid lots of shrieks, bringing the camp manager and her daughter in to the bathroom looking a bit worried. She said she half expected to see a male and female in the girls’ bathroom because it’s not uncommon for men to cover up their heads and hope she doesn’t see them go in, so they can have a shower with their girlfriend!!! She laughed and said “As if I can’t tell they’re not female!”. Apparently someone came in late this afternoon and must have had a very long shower and ran the hot water down and the cold water refill was the result. Anyway, we’re clean and now back in our “home”, which is nice and warm with the heater on. Tonight will be another cold night and one of my memories of York will be the smell of burning wood in fireplaces.
Tomorrow we head to Richard and Hayley and the boys in Perth, where we will empty the van of all our paraphernalia, fill it with fuel, sweep it out and take it back to wherever we have to take it!!! It has been a great little vehicle and we have managed quite easy the very close quarters. It will be sad that our very much fun adventure will be over, but we have so enjoyed it, rushed as it was. We have seen some wonderful things, all so different to where we live and have met some interesting people along the way. Photos will remind us of where we’ve been, if our memories are a bit muddled from the speedy journey 🥴🥴
Today’s highlight: The buildings of York and the general history and realisation
A video of great band that was playing this afternoon in York

Our Esperance Adventure Pt 2 🐖
On Friday April 26th, around 17pm local Esperance time, Chris and I decided to drive to one of the beaches to see the sunset. Halfway through the great ocean drive, we heard a sudden metal sound, that was followed by the sound of car parts scratching over the road. To me, it initially felt like we had a flat front right wheel tyre, but soon realized that it was more than just the tyre being flat. Chris braked, and safely maneuvered the car to the side of the road (60-zone). We jumped out of the car, and foun the entire front wheel folded underneath the chassis.
Tumblr media
As we soon found out, this was due to a failure of the lower ball joint, something that we didn’t even know COULD fail. Since we bought the car, several mechanics had inspected it, and had never pointed it out. After doing some research, we found out that this is a common failure for the 90s Toyota Prado series, for which a great amount of cars were recalled years ago.
Tumblr media
After the accident, several cars stopped, and had a look at our problem, including two mechanics who had never seen such a thing before. It was here, that we met Lawrence, the owner of the ice cream van who we saw on the beach before. He told us that he wanted to help, and that we could stay at his farm in the meantime. While Lawrence was getting his truck from home, we made sure the road was safe for others to pass, as it was pitch black outside, and the place that we crashed at was just near a cliff (shoutout to my mom for letting us buy safety vests and triangles). Lawrence came back, and took us, AND our car to his home.
Tumblr media
No car dealer was open on a friday night, so we had to wait until Monday to order the parts. We got to know his wife Leoni (who is originally from Holland!) and their two little kids Laura and Leon. They live on a lovely farm just outside Esperance, with lots of things to do. We helped out feeding the goats, cows, pigs, dogs and horse, as well as helping to get their ice cream van ready for a sunny day on Twilight beach.
Tumblr media
We could stay in a truck outside, one that is sometimes used by WWOOFERS, volunteers that Lawrence and Leoni welcome on the farm. WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, and people work on organic farms in exchange for food and accommodation. Interestingly, before going to Australia, Chris and I researched this and were really excited to do this during our trip. And in the end, we did 😉
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chris and I had a great time playing with the children, cooking for the family, and being outside all day. Lawrence and Chris found out which parts were damaged in the process, and we started making a list. In the meantime, I was busy drawing Paw Patrol drawings with Laura, and making the perfect portrait of Lily (the dog).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, not all parts were available on Monday in Esperance, and we had to wait for these (unusual) parts to be transported here from Perth, WA. Besides the obvious ball joint failure, that had to be replaced, we also ordered a new CV chaff, new brake pads for both wheels, even two new wheels, and lots of new bolts for them. Also, a broken ABS cable, and brake line were not even available with Toyota, so we checked with wreckers in town if they had some. None of them even had a Toyota Prado, even though every second car you find on the streets here is literally a Toyota Prado. In general, we are stunned by the amount of 4WD SUV’s that people own here. Lawrence told us it’s a higher density of them than anywhere else in the world. We think it’s because Australians love their freedom, and need their big car to bring their kids, their dog, their fishing, boating, and camping gear on to the beach. And there are LOTS of possibilities in Australia to drive off-road with your car (look out for the sign ‘4WD only’), for example on sand dunes, rough gravel roads, through rivers, or just for camping near the sea.
As the wreckers didn’t have our components, Lawrence decided to build them himself (he is very talented and managed, with the help of some of his mechanic friends, to build some parts himself). Then we had to wait as Lawrence drove to Perth, and came back a few days later (to pick up cheaper hay for the cows). After 2 weeks, our car looked ready to go (finally!). As much as Chris and I loved bing surrounded by animals all day, coloring in Paw Patrol figures, and racing Leon’s bike, we dreamt about continuing our trip. Also, Chris wasn’t particularly fond of farming but that’s a story for another time.

Perth’s coolest spots to get your ice cream fix this winter
Perth’s coolest spots to get your ice cream fix this winter
Last night after a dinner in Northbridge the recommendation to get ice cream was posed, and while indulging in the cold treat on a freezing evening may seem like a ridiculous choice, it made our night.
Inside the very aesthetically pleasing Billy Van Creamy — a swirly mix of millennial pink walls with creaky floorboards and original roof detailing — the kids wolfed down their cones and the big…

2018-05(MAY)-28th--Monday--Abo criminals rampant again and the old man of the street employs them now as labourers in his yard.
Firstly, I have NO INTERNET...AGAIN ON MONDAY. -- THIS ENTRY WILL GET POSTED WHEN AND IF CONNECTIVITY RETURNS.
------------------------------------------------
2018-05(MAY)-28th--Monday--Abo criminals rampant again and the old man of the street employs them now as labourers in his yard.
Abo criminals rampant again and the old man of the street employs them now as labourers in his yard.
This is the old guy, with the big green sheet metal fence who has built it all up to keep OUT the very criminals that today he had frolicking around in his yard (and house?), mowing his front lawn, and running rapant with a hose squirted high in the air and onto the inside side of the tall green sheet metal fence.
SO......ipso facto....everything that I've heard about this old guy is true....he IS related to the criminal aboriginals of the streets, whether ALSO by bloodlines or marriage I have no idea. But as for all his complaning to Western Australian Police about him being the victim of aboriginals......he is actually VERY FRIENDLY WITH THE VERY SAME CRIMINALS who smash up his fence, his house, everything. - Whether it's a case whereby he is 'blackmailed' by them or not, the fact is that he supplies food and stuff to the criminal aboriginals out of his own pocket.
One walked out boldly carrying an unopened pot-noodle tub and tossing it into the air as if she had just won lotto. And she walked away, around the street corner and STRAIGHT into the aboriginal criminal household, across the road from fatguts criminal aboriginal household.
And earlier......they had been congregating on the street beforehand and.....
They invaded the yard of the unfenced corner house-for-sale/rent AGAIN and picked up rocks and were hurling them at the house whereby there was a LOUD glass smashing sound heard. - THIS IS THE BILLIONTH TIME THAT WINDOWS OR WHATEVER HAS BEEN SMASHED AT THAT PLACE BY THEM.
What's almost laughable if it were not TRUE, was that an innocent man came along yesterday looking to buy/rent that very place and asked me about the crime rate, to which I told him and more. - AND WHICH TODAY WAS PROVEN OUT AGAIN FOR THE BILLIONTH TIME...
--------------------------------------------------------
Later on, about an hour or two later, two glazier glass repair vehicles drove up along the road and passed it all.
I thought they were going to go and YET AGAIN repair smashed windows and stuff.....but they drive to the nearby Koongamia shops instead. Then therafter drove away northwards further into Koongamia.
Has the Koongamia school been AGAIN a victim of criminals AGAIN? - You know, the SAME CRIMINALS THAT DO ALL THE DAMNED CRIME OF THIS HELLHOLE.......
In any event, I expect they will return YET AGAIN to do repairs to Mitchells old place AGAIN......
Maybe when the real estate agent makes a visit there to inspect or try to sell/rent the property yet again.....for the BILLIONTH TIME........OR MORE.....
The criminal aboriginals WANT IT. - They want to expand their criminal ghetto in the streets.
And the old guy with the green fence acts almost like a 'godfather' figure to them all but is also treated and exploited by them. So what else is new about that? They exploit their OWN FAMILIES AND FAMILY MEMBERS AND PREY UPON THEIR OWN SO VERY VERY MUCH NO MATTER WHAT AGE THEY ARE FROM BABIES IN DIAPERS TO YOUTHS AND CHILDREN TO ADULTS TO ELDERLY AND INFIRM UNTO DEATH AND BEYOND. ALL THAT IS 'NORMAL' FOR THEM ALL.
So...is the old guy finally showing his true colours then?
--------------------------------------------------------
It's been threatening to rain all morning. It has gotten VERY overcast time and again and with some small amount of rain. It's been very cold.
Damned planes have been taking off from Perth airport and flying low straight over here a LOT, heading East.
I wish I was on one of them going to dear Fliss.
--------------------------------------------------------
My injuries have been giving me a lot of grief. THAT and together with other terrible physical pain.
Not much sleep at all.
Was awoken by vehicles, and by scraping their undersides on the kerb as they drove away early in the morning.
Poor Max is in a LOT of pain and VERY growly. Poor Sam is terribly upset and confused but forever looking for dear Fliss too.
I've had to be cleaning up all their ablutions a LOT today. And trying to do it all without getting wet from the rains. And keeping them both dry from ever getting wet and very cold when outside.
Smoke now everwhere from people in houses buring wood to try to be warm.
The criminal aboriginals just tear down house 4-sale signs and use the timbers from that to burn.
No sign of semi-feral cats...YET.
No sign of semi-feral dogs....YET.
--------------------------------------------------------
My internet is TOTALLY STUFFED with NO CONNECTIVITY AT ALL.
Criminals at their criminality again stealing cable again?
--------------------------------------------------------
Heavy rains and possibly thunderstorm(s) still likely to roll in to this hellhole to add to all the hell.
It's been forecast for DAYS.
And COLD.
--------------------------------------------------------
Tomorrow is council rubbish bin collection day, so that means rabid aboriginals will be frolicking about on the streets as if it's a Mr Whippy Ice Cream Van........
And it will be pouring down with rain.
--------------------------------------------------------
So where are all the criminal aboriginals and criminals on unlicensed motorbikes then?
Maybe they need a sign from the holy Wagyl in the shape of a Police vehicle cruising past to let them know they are safe to do whatever the hell they want on the roads as has happened for so many YEARS......
Or maybe they're just awaiting for the rains again to get heavy.......
Which will also trigger a plague of dickheads in cars tearing about the slippery wet roads and tearing all about.....to join the illegal unlicensed motrobikes........
Will that endanger yet again innocents on the roads and families on the roads with children? - Will there be AGAIN a major incident that make the NEWS? - Or will there be more deaths this time?
--------------------------------------------------------
Around 2pm......a workers van arrived at the house 4-sale/rent that the criminal aborigials had smashed YET AGAIN before later going to the old guys house to be 'rewarded'? with a pot-noodle and to have them mow his front yard and frolic about.....
The worker is I expect going to try to repair YET AGAIN criminal damage done to it by criminal aboriginals....(eg. the SMASHING of window glass that I heard earlier by the criminal aboriginals).....
He has house keys and also goes inside the empty house.
Is and has all the CONSTANT criminal damage by the criminal aboriginals become so regular and constant that the workman just turn up EVERY Monday now to repair it all prior to the real estate saleswomen turning up for a 'house open' attempt to lure unsuspecting victims to buy/rent it at this hellhole that the criminals have made it?
I have no qualms about forewarning that fellow (a stranger) yesterday of it all.
AND......when the workers van was parked in the place, from across the road at the aboriginal criminal household was criminal aboriginals roaming out from and wandering the streets on the footpath and of course walking past the house the workers van was parked at.
As they began to get near the old guys place, the old guy thumped his green metal fence from his side as an animalistic warning or signal, and so the trio of aboriginals just walked past. A man, a woman, a kid....ALL DRESSED IN BLACK CLOTHING....because that is the 'uniform' of shitheads everywhere like them......
--------------------------------------------------------
I love you dear Fliss and want to be with you. Poor Max is in a lot of pain. And both poor Sam and poor Max and I are in a lot of suffocating anguish all together at this hellhole. Poor Max is having a LOT of trouble breathing.
I gave them a treat this afternoon, a food treat of something very unhealthy that I was forced to to eat myself. Then let them outside for the ablutions before the rains hit again. Then I had to clean it all up AGAIN.
AND I have had to clean up all the damned mess the parrots leave all around the place.....even AS THEY WERE MAKING MORE MESS WHICH I WILL HAVE TO CLEAN UP AGAIN............parrots who do the bidding of Sisyphus utilising leaves and branches and half-chewed-up gumnuts EVERYWHERE......
I love you dear Fliss and want to be with you.
--------------------------------------------------------
Typing all this in OFFLINE and will upload it when I can get connectivity.....IF I can get connectivity.......

Mornington Peninsula
Back in Rye at Hotel Gordon again we had plenty to keep us busy on our final 3 weeks in Victoria. We spent most of the time walking and catching up with friends. Here are the highlights:- Sorrento Primary School Footsteps dance concert - we spent our first morning back in Rye watching the Gordon kids performing dances with their classmates on the basketball court at their school. Grandparents were invited by the children and also "special people", so Phoebe invited us! Inevitably there was a bit of audience participation and Mark got up and joined in, much to the kids' delight. He was pretty good too! We walked along the coast and had lunch at St Kilda with Dianna. We love this suburb of Melbourne, there are lots of  gorgeous little cafes and delis here. After lunch we watched Nicholas playing football and then had a delicious steak salad with Dianna, Duncan, Helena and Nicholas back at their house. Sue Mac came down from Newcastle for the weekend and we had fun catching up, walking and eating! We went to Main Ridge Dairy with Chrissy and had a cheese tasting platter and a glass of wine and coffee and cake at Merrick's General Store. We took the scenic route back to the airport, calling in at Mornington for coffee on the way, and we only just made it to departures in time for Sue to check in.  We walked more of the Mornington Peninsula 100km walk, ticking off sections of the coastal walk and bay trail with Sue, Chrissy and Missy. We also did a couple of other walks with Missy, making the most of our surrogate dog!  Melbourne flower show - we were lucky to be given tickets at the last minute for this show and we spent a lovely sunny day checking out the latest Australian horticultural and floral trends. We bought burgers for lunch from Beatbox, a well known Melbourne food truck. We took the Gordon kids to the finish line of the Oxfam 100km walk, which Kane was taking part in as part of a team. It was very emotional watching them finish their gruelling 33 hour trek. They were shattered, having slept only for an hour or so, but they were happy with their achievement and they raised quite a few dollars too.  The day after Kane's walk he treated us to breakfast at Buckley's Chance in Sorrento. I had their breakfast special, on Chrissy's recommendation; pancakes, bacon and poached eggs. It was a bizarre combination and I would like to tell you that it worked...but it didn't! I had to draw the line at Chrissy's insistence that I try maple syrup on my bacon...!! All the components were delicious though, so no complaints!     Gold Class cinema - I loved this idea. We were shown to the Gold Class lounge and chose our refreshments. Just before the film started we were escorted to our seats, which were comfortable, reclining ones, not those tip-up monstrosities we normally have to perch on. Then our waitress brought out our chosen refreshments at various intervals throughout the film. I was a little distracted watching my wine, gourmet popcorn and hot chocolate arrive, as if by magic, but I enjoyed the film, Hidden Figures, too!  Somewhere amongst all this we managed to squeeze in lunch at the Sorrento Hotel with Cathie (great fun), ice creams from Vulcano one last time (heaven in a bowl), camping at Rye beach with the kids (we watched the sunrise on the beach in PJ's), Sunday roast dinner (with proper Yorkshire puddings) and Mark's speciality; beef rendang (Charlie kindly searched out and sent us the recipe!). We said a tearful goodbye (actually I think it was just me shedding tears!) to Kane, Chrissy, Phoebe, Tammy, Joe and Missy and to Melbourne and the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. Hotel Gordon has been a home from home for us on and off since November and we are going to miss the people and the place. So, now on to Darwin, the Northern Territory and our 4wd camper van drive down the west coast towards Perth. A whole new adventure starts here! 😉

Sunday 12th February
Day 1 The adventure has begun! After what has felt like a lifetime, Harry and I have finally set off driving for the first day in our little home on wheels. At first I was a little nervous about the size of the van- but luckily it's a little like Mary Poppins' carpet bag and we can even stand up inside! Of course I insisted on unpacking my things first and Harry has managed to squeeze his belongings in around mine, but for now we've made it home. This afternoon we said goodbye to Perth and headed to the Pinnacles. The Pinnacles is a bunch of giant limestone rocks which emerged from the sand looking like tombstones. I wasn't too bothered about visiting but Harry wanted to go... so we went. Upon arrival we ate the only food that we currently have- some boiled eggs. It may sound boring but Harry does boil up a good egg! After moaning for days about the rainy weather in Perth, Harry was surprisingly displeased with the humidity today. Realising that our van might not make it around the road at the Pinnacles, I suggested taking the walking option. Harry suggested that we just left. I bargained with him by telling him if he was good enough we would get ice cream after the walk. The walk didn't last very long before we both decided it wasn't worth going much further. No ice cream today. We decided that maybe it was a good idea to go for a dip to cool down. A fuel stop was needed so we pulled into a petrol station. A fight began between Harry and the fuel cap which didn't want to come off. He tried all he could before giving in and calling the roadside helpline who advised him to push a button inside the car. I'm sure that guy thought we were absolute idiots. We discussed history and politics in the car as we headed up the road beside the ocean. It wasn't long before we found somewhere that looked good for a dip. By this time it wasn't as hot and the water demonstrated no reflection of the heat of the day. We dipped our toes and felt satisfied. I had a nap and woke up in a pool of dribble on my pillow. It must have been a good nap. We decided to try "Chicken Treat" for dinner as none of the shops were open. We got a fantastic deal and are both overjoyed that there is plenty of chicken left over to eat tomorrow. Our dinner was enjoyed beside the sea sat out the back of our van. It was a very lovely scene but I can't help but feel we disturbed the couple in the van beside us who were eating pizza. I was enjoying their music until they packed up and left shortly after we arrived. Now we are ready to watch a movie in the back of our van. We've stopped at a nice caravan site and are now showered and clean ready for an early start tomorrow and a much needed food shop. Luckily Harry brought a mini fan with him and hopefully there won't be much moaning tonight...
