Shaped by itself from heavy machinery depending on the wood’s characteristics and decrease of moisture, the Urbach Tower is a 14m tall tower that is a unique wooden structure designed and built by ICD/ITKE University of Stuttgart. Each timber component are manufactured in a flat condition, then curved by standard fabrication style drying. This development reduces energy-intensive techniques required for timber manufacturing, thus offering unpredictable opportunities for architectural wood structures, creating sustainable, renewable and locally sourced building materials. Rate this pavilion from 1-10? The BUGA Wood Pavilion designed by ICD and ITKE, celebrates a new approach to digital timber construction. Its segmented wood shell is based on biological principles found in the plate skeleton of sea urchins, which have been studied by ICD and ITKE at the University of #Stuttgart for almost a decade. As part of the project, a robotic manufacturing platform was developed for the automated assembly and milling of the pavilion’s 376 bespoke hollow wood segments. This fabrication process ensures that all segments fit together with sub-millimetre precision like a big, three-dimensional puzzle. The stunning wooden roof spans 30 meters over one of BUGA’s main event and concert venues, using a minimum amount of material while also generating a unique architectural space. ICD/ITKE Research Pavilion 2016/7 constructed by Drones and Robots in #Stuttgart #Germany. Drones and robots weave carbon-fibre pavilion based on moth webs. Researchers and students from the University of Stuttgart have used robots and drones to weave this carbon-fibre pavilion, which is based on the silk hammocks spun by moth larvae. The 12-metre-long cantilevering structure known as the ICD/ITKE Research Pavilion 2016/7 is made from over 180 kilometres of woven resin-impregnated glass -and carbon-fibre.
