So we had a campus intruder drills and talked about shooter thanks to the Aryan nations. But we had another drill because the town of my birth was home to a SAC(strategic air command) nuclear bomber and ICBM base. It's tagline was "STOP, DUCK, AND TURTLE"...

Now mind you, I grew up around people who were realists, who had worked developing the various ICBM and ACLM(air launched cruise missle) projects, another who worked for Westinghouse in reactor development, and an uncle (Dr.) who helped source the best uranium for the DOD during the cold War. So even as a kid I had no pretenses about being able to live through a nuclear war. My biggest wish is that those drills for that threat died with my generation. Sadly, I don't think they have...

But there was one thing that "STOP, DROP, AND TURTLE" did prepare me for, and have got to use in LIVE experiments since:

For those unaware, a lockdown drill is a drill schools will run to practice in the event of a danger to students and staff. This could be anything from a swarm of bees (happened at my elementary school) to an off-campus police presence or an active shooter event.

When I was in school we did lockdown drills only, the district I work in now does lockdowns and active shooter drills, but they’re conflated and the kids are taught to barricade during a lockdown when applicable.

huhhhhh that's. i didn't think of that! the fact that they're in old warhead tunnels is funky for sure. Like why not just build a new structure of their own out in the middle of the desert completely off the grid? Why use an old government location, if El and Brenner and Owens know they're being targeted by the government?

I'm not sure if those tunnels in specific have anything to do with radiationgate, but ICBMs are generally nuclear. There don't seem to be any ICBM sites or power plants in IN, but if they're discontinued/off the grid the way the one for NINA was...it's possible they could create a fictional one. Considering that Indianapolis is a known nuclear target, and Hawkins is 80 miles from Indianapolis, it wouldn't be a stretch.

In my poking around about ICBM sites, I did find this paper from NOVEMBER 1983??

It discusses in detail the effects of nuclear attacks on the US, and one section in particular talks about the ability of ICBM tunnels/silos to withstand nuclear blasts

"The silos in which modern ICBM's are housed are underground concrete structures, "hardened" to withstand the effects of nuclear blasts. There is a wide range of nuclear effects that might damage an ICBM within such a silo, but spokesmen for the U.S. Air Force have indicated that U.S. rCBM silos are generally most vulnerable to the shockwave of the nuclear blast. Thus the hardness of a given silo is usually expressed in terms of the shock-wave overpressure required to destroy it, measured in pounds per sq uare inch (p.s.i.). The silos currently housing the 1,000 U.S. Minuteman ICBM's are generally estimated to be capable of withstanding overpressures of up to 2,000 p.s.i. The detonation of a half-megaton weapon, such as those carried by the most accurate Russian MIRV's, would create such overpressures at ranges of roughly 300 meters; therefore to destroy a Minuteman ICBM a half-megaton weapon would have to be detonated within 300 meters of the silo.

Putting this in the perspective of Hawkins:

Hawkins was hit with a 7.4 magnitude earthquake from the blast when Henry opened the Rifts. That's roughly the equivalent of something like 500ktons of TNT. (Ish. I haven't done any of the math on Richter decimals.)

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake is only equivalent to about 6 tons of TNT explosives, but because the Richter scale is a base-10 logarithmic scale, the amount of energy released increases quickly: A magnitude 5.0 earthquake is about 200 tons of TNT, magnitude 6.0 is 6,270 tons, 7.0 is 199,000 tons, 8.0 is 6,270,000 tons, and 9.0 is 99,000,000 tons of TNT. As you can imagine, 99 million tons of TNT is enough to destroy just about anything, and is the equivalent of about 25,000 nuclear bombs. (This is according to the Center for Earthquake Research and Information and the U.S. Geological Survey.)

So: a Rift-event could destroy one of these silos, were the silo within 300m of the blast. Assuming a fictional silo in IN would not be within 300m of the library, it's probably untouched.

Continuing on: The bombs that hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki were 15ktons and 20ktons respectively.

Chernobyl was said to have released 30-40 times that much, which would be at least 450ktons and at most 800ktons.

That? That's right in our range.

The point I was going for, though, was this: These ICBM silos/tunnels are made of concrete, which was what they used to seal up Chernobyl and what they used to seal off the Hawkins Lab gate. Concrete is a radiation shield (x).

If they invent an off-the-grid decommissioned ICBM site, that's a good place to go in the wake of a Chernobyl-equivalent event.

On another post on here, someone pointed out that fifty years from now would be the 1970s, hence Shadow would have been made in or around the seventies (and know disco but that's another topic).

During that time, Eisenhower's Project BAMBI, a precursor to Ronald Reagan's Star Wars project in the 80s, was in research and production, meant to strike down USSR ICBMs soon after launch using missle-carrying satellites, that way making sure that no nuclear missiles ever struck the US.

Anti-war protestors of course called for the project to halt (even though such a system would have been a legitimate means of protection against mutually assured destruction), leaving only one Safeguard system and base in operation from 1975-1976. Such a project then could be directly tied to the one Project Shadow was a part of, created to protect in a Cold War era but then shut down quietly from protests and questions about what Gerald Robetnik was doing. The ARK as it is could then also have been a part of project BAMBI, with Gerald Robetnik (a Polish last name) potentially having been a Polish immigrant who wanted to take a stand against Russia for the sake of his new home and his old one along with wanting to find a cure for his granddaughter Maria. But after his project was shut down and his granddaughter killed, he saw the US as being just as bad as the Soviet Union and so altered Shadow's memory of his promise to Maria have his revenge.

The one that hit Ailell is probably a nuke, that left behind radioactive material. I'm not sure if Ailell is a realistic depict of what happens in a contaminated site after 1000 years. Realistic or not maybe the writer are trying to imply something?

Honestly I can’t think of any reason for the inclusion of ICBMs in this game other than a dev thought “hey that might look kind of cool!”

Clearly they didn’t think out the plot or story implications of including such a thing.

Benefits Of Hypersonic Missles

I don’t understand why all the press about hypersonic missiles has only focused on their risks. Some risks are real but there are also strategic benefits and it irks me that it seems like the media is just reasoning based on their gut level feeling that a new fancy weapon must be bad. I’m sure experts have considered both costs and benefits and I’d love to see them but articles that don’t even stop to refute potential benefits irk me. Much like tech workers who refuse to work on military applications on principal rather than weighing the pros and cons of helping the US acquire that particular tech.

Despite claims that they undermine deterrence it seems to me the exact opposite is true for the major nuclear powers. If anti-ICBM defenses destabilize deterrence it stands to reason tech which can’t be defended against could improve deterrence.

The expense and technical difficulty of hypersonic weapons means that only the major powers will likely be able to build them. So now we get the best of bost worlds in that we can build out full anti-ICBM tech to reduce the danger of attacks from rogue nations like NK (unlikely to be able to afford a massive barrage or a huge number of decoys) without undermining the balance of nuclear deterrence with the other major powers. Indeed, the sheer speed of hypersonic weapons offers the tantalizing possibility of anti-ICBM weapons that could impact during boost phase provided they were stationed nearby (e.g. in SK).

These missiles don’t force decisions about counterattack to be made within the short window before striking since the major powers can still counterstrike with missles housed safely on nuclear subs, hidden in silos in their vast empty fields and scrambled to wait in the air. Using hypersonic weapons as second strike weapons ensures that a relatively small number of nukes scattered on subs, scrambled into the air or placed in a few of our minutemen silos provide an effective MAD style deterrence against great powers.

The fact that hypersonic missiles potentially render aircraft carriers and other capital ships useless isn’t all bad. China inevitably will develop its own aircraft carriers if they remain useful meaning both countries will spend massive amounts of money to remain on par. Far better if we remained on par without the capital ships given that whenever we need to project airpower against distant weaker states (e.g. UN approved bombings etc..) we can use the hypersonic missiles to project power. It potentially harms our strategic position re: russia but it’s not totally obvious to me if it’s a net harm or benefit.

The Japanese government and affiliated nationalist organizations utilize the missile tests of the DPRK to build support for the continuing military build-up within Japan as support for the projection of imperialist interests grow. We must not forget that Japan, a state which brutally occupied the Korean peninsula over 70 years ago, still has strained relations with both the North and South concerning this topic and their refusal to admit any substantial wrongdoing. The Japanese government has taken a far more aggressive stance against the DPRK than the RoK has in decades.  When maintaining and developing a missile deterrent, tests need to be conducted to ensure capability and to demonstrate said capability to aggressive foreign powers. Tests allow a state to ensure new software and hardware functions, allows a state to ensure older systems are still capable, allows a state to catch any possible flaws which may reduce the effectiveness of said missiles, and make tweaks to their arsenal in response. The DPRK has fired missiles into the East Sea for decades, not as a move of “intimidation” against Japan so much as firing into the sea being incredibly standard practice for any state testing ballistic missiles. If a failure occurs, the debris is far less likely to come crashing down on civilian areas, while spent stages will fall into the sea rather than into fields.  The only tests which could truly be considered “aggressive”, the two Hwasong-12s fired over Japan and into the Pacific, only occurred after Japanese (and u$) aggression reached its highest levels in years. We must remember as well that the two firings over Japan occurred only a few weeks after the u$ tested a Minuteman III ICBM, firing one 6,800 kilometres Westwards from Vandenberg AFB to Kwajalein Atoll. Hypocrisy and the build-up of fear among their populace is the game of the u$ and its allies, Japan included. The DPRK has continuously shown their focus on military targets in a potential engagement far more so than civilian ones. A deterrence plan must involve a focus on both tactical  targets (such as military bases) and strategic targets (such as cities) yet even then the DPRK has primarily focused on tactical rather than strategic targets. For an example, their threats against Guam are often painted as simply ‘threatening u$ citizens’ despite the existence of Naval Base Guam (which contains substantial assets of the u$ Navy Pacific Fleet) and Andersen Air Force Base (which is the only base in the Western Pacific which can permanently host B-1, B-2, and B-52 bombers).  Even within and around Seoul and Busan, the known and believed primary targets for DPRK missile forces are military, and not only military but u$ military. Primary targets within the RoK have been identified as Camp Humphreys, Osan Air Base, Camp Casey, Yongsan Garrison, Camp Red Cloud, Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae, Camp Carroll, Camp George, Camp Henry, and Camp Walker. On the other side of the East Sea in Japan, primary targets have been identified as Iwakuni Marine Corps Air Station, Kadena Air Base, Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Camp Zama, Yokota Air Base, Misawa Air Base, and Sasebo Naval Base. Across these bases are hundreds of combat aircraft at any given time, with the capacity to operate thousands, alongside dozens of warships, and nearly 100,000 u$ soldiers (with the capacity to field several times that number.) Often ignored as well is that it is suspected that the u$ military command in both Japan and South Korea are believed to possess arsenals of tactical nuclear weapons, largely in the form of cruise missiles.  The point of all of this is that the u$ is the primary enemy of the DPRK, not the RoK or Japan despite their aggression. Unless the u$ and its allies begin carpet bombing the DPRK, there is no threat of the DPRK attacking civilian targets in Japan, the RoK, or even the u$, regardless of how desperate the warhawks are to convince the people otherwise.
