Hi! I met you at a con in 2019, and now I'm doing a project for my graphics class based on flying ships, and I'm using your ships as inspiration.

Do you have any tips for how to create original flying ship designs that look practical? I'm trying to come up with my own but they tend to just look either copied from yours or simply unreasonable. Thank you and I love your work:]

Hey, thats awesome!

Mostly I would say to look at lots and lots of pictures of ships, weird machinery, concept vehicles and imaginary tech.

When you're 'inventing' something, the best route isn't to just try to think of a new thing, it's to create a problem and then solve it. Real machines are create to respond to problems like wind resistance, lift, weight limitations etc - the design is secondary to the problem being solved!

In The Foldings weight and lift aren't really a problem, magic solves these. So the problems become weirder - how to steer, how to fit a house onto a small boat, how to run a food truck on a raft.

If you start creating problems then you can start to see how different types of vehicles emerge, because they're not just designed to look nice, they're designed to be used!

There's also another artist who does flying ships who I took inspiration from - Ian McQue! His are more modern metal, but we share the love of dinged up, well used, dirty looking worlds where the vehicles tell a whole story:
