It still feels. Strange? that it took a literal 6 years for Villainous to be in the US, not including the (albeit appreciated) appearance during CN's literal anniversary, but honestly, I'm just glad that 2017 fans are just so relieved and happy that we finally got this.
It's taken cons, comics, interactive books, youtube extras of other cartoon villains, a cameo in a cn online video game, an actual mobile video game solely for the show, fans all across internationally, literal support from a few other countries before usa, the show hitting No1 in hbo max latam, a full blown crossover episode as well as being cameod in crossover nexus, a promotion with a candy manufacturer with official goodies, livestreams, halloween hbo max takeovers, official mascot costumes, and a HUGE internet background puzzle solving mystery that's still ongoing.
All for after 6 years, it finally comes to the usa officially on its own.
I really do fondly remember when these,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the shorts themselves were all we had. It had even been a bit before alan ituriel had gone to cons and whatnot to publicly talk about the show and all that, I even remember the storyboarded live readings he did with fans.
All we had were these and fans' wild imaginations. Whether it was the Heroic au, or a western au, or a Neutral au, or a Jekyll & Hyde au, or a Swap!au, it all helped shaping the fanbase into what it is now.
Quite literally, none of this would have happened if not for the fans. All of what happened after the shorts, but especially It coming to the usa now, especially that.
It just feels serendipitous to see it finally happen, I cannot stress enough how satisfying it is. Congratulations again to Villainous, for surpassing the odds put against it! Mi lealtad se queda contigo!!!

Do you have any particular sense for how it is to be (or work towards being) an indie animator right now? I'm assuming that it's nigh-impossible to follow in the shoes of someone like you, or Rebecca Sugar, or Ian JQ, or... any of my idol-esque showrunners, frankly. But it seems like there's some interest to drum up about shows like The Amazing Digital Circus or Lackadaisy or Helluva Boss. What's your input on that front?
You nailed it.
I do think there will be some original animated show creators coming out of this next generation, but the chances of a studio supporting a young creator of an original idea seems much lower than it used to. CN is making some new shorts, so something interesting may come from there. Mostly, though, I think that the new stuff will come from people who just make something because they want to make something.
That's my current, sloppy plan anyway.
Things are going to get even weirder in the future, I think, as studios continue to push to replace or overwork their existing workers. LLMs are a bad investment all-around, but we may still end up fighting them for space on the internet. Studios would love to have complete dominance over the media space, so flooding the internet with AI trash is in their best interest.
So yeah. Make something. Make it now before things get harder.

IAN JQ QUOTED CARTOON BASE'S POST ABOUT #RenewStevenUniverse just a few hours ago! The hashtag is still trending right now on Twitter with 9K posts.
Thank you all so much for the wonderful experience that this has been. We're doing amazing!
Even if we don't get a renewal, I'm still so happy to be a part of this fandom. To have met so many amazing, unique people. Thank you, Steven Universe, for everything.

ok i was scared to post smth like this for a MULTITUDE of reasons but you know what im just gonna say it!! im a selfshipper. hi.
just to be completely clear selfshipping is not new to me in any form lol, ive been doing it on the dl since middle school bcuz i was too embarrassed to be open abt it 💀
anyways yeah ray is my f/o 🙏 ive had the FATTEST crush on them since i was like 10. like this FREAK makes me so happy none of u guys get it
also i made an alt design of my sona exclusively for ok ko!! shes gets an actual BODY NOW!!!!!!!! (obviously its based of my body irl lol) i imagine whenever ray is in battle she doesnt like to participate, but she'll watch from the sidelines with like over the top sports gear on (foam finger, beer hat, etc) and cheering him on lol
i havent really fully decided what my alignment would be in ok ko cuz idk i dont think id have enough malice in my heart to be a villian like ray 💀 ive been considering just settling for lvl 1 hero, AND EVEN THOUGH I DONT FULLY AGREE WITH IT... i support ray and his evil endeavors lmao
as for what powers id have, i think just basic dragon stuff since my sona is part dragon!! like breathing rainbow fire and flying n shit. i also think that id whip out the crayons from my head and use them as weapons, specifically throwing knives.
AND ALSO ALSO ALSOOOO SMTH SUPER CRAZY ABT THIS IS THAT THIS IS ALL TECHNICALLY CANON!!!!! ian jq said on bird app that all aus and ocs are canon and im like???? NO FLORPING WAYYY #WINNING
extra stuff under cut

Neon White is such an interesting game. What if a game had SUDA 51 style but also the worst parts of Otaku bullshit, that makes it feel like the devs argued over which of Persona 4's characters were Best Girl back in like 2013. And Good God who did the casting for the character voices. Aside from being happy that Ian JQ is in the cast these voices are Ridiculous and don't fit the tone of the game at all

i know so little about american animation it staggers me. i remember listening to a podcast interview with ian jq and rebecca sugar where, after they promoted their shows on streaming services, said that they wouldn't be making money off of it anyways. what? were they exaggerating?? no way they don't get residuals.

Ian JQ said that Raymond would be the prince in the universe where Rad is a merman. I've been thinking about OK K.O. lately, and wanted to draw something else for MerMay anyway, so this was perfect.
I'm not a fan of Raymond's canon human design, so I made my own version. I also changed Rad's ears.
Anyway I've really missed these two! I hadn't drawn them since 2017.

It kinda feels like when the Owl Crew were all saying their goodbyes to working on the show again.
Nearly everyone in the tags is getting ready for The End.
Like. Damn. It really is the end as far as we know for the entire franchise of The Owl House.
Man.
#its also giving SPoP and SU flashbacks#except its happening in the evening and not during the afternoon like SU or at an all-at-once-release deal like SPoP#getting p emotional#I do remember early in the days. like when Ms Dana Terrace was still in the dt team and doodled Luz#alongside Rebecca Sugar Ian JQ and I think alex hirsch#and ofc the first real poster#and watching it on youtube when it first aired. and even watching it on TV.#I remember a lot of it with twitter too. that viney cult thing. the hype for Understanding Willow. the pic of lil Luz smiling going around.#I remember tons of fics. The Lumity azura actor au thats been LOONG abandoned lmao. the one where Luz was the author of tgwa. tons more.#Of course the excessive hype for Grom.#The hype for the S1B trailer was huge too but Grom. You cannot replicate that. And yknow what? Id go as far to say#not even Hollow Mind had that much hype behind it.#Plus the huge amounts of news coverage and hype after Grom aired.#Like the show was fairly popularish. Nothing too big and was about even with amphibby. But after Grom. BOOM. Huge amounts.#I could really go on. I just cant really believe that its kinda unfairly going away. Possibly never to return. One of The most talked about#animated shows in the past couple years (similar to the likes of Steven Universe! Which was HUGE.) even worldwide.#Nothing lasts forever. It just is unfair the time spent was taken away tho. Happened to others too. Happens so much to animation#and we just Have to accept it because higher-ups are either to proud to their stupid ideals or simply for no real good reason.#This show has had a good impact on animation. I'm always gunna be glad for that. And I'm glad that so many have been touched and loved.#Here's hoping to the future. Maybe more Owl House. Maybe more creativity by the crew. Maybe for better. To The Owl House!#The Owl House#TOH#Owl House

Need to get something off my mind.
*enters Wendy's*
I've recently been struck with a bit of nostalgia for Steven Universe, which led me to a bit of online diving into posts and blogs from the heyday of the show. Oh boy.
Back during 2014-2016, before I even had any interest in shipping, when I was busy drawing my Gemsona and playing the ''Steven Universe RP ''Roblox game, the community was busy indulging itself in unprecedented levels of toxicity. This was during a time when artists would be bullied and sent death threats for drawing a character wrong (we all know what I'm talking about) and a time when cross-site wars were happening (4chan-Tumblr wars). Bullying, trolling, drama, you name it, it all used to be so much worse.
And don't even get me started on the shipping community at that time. Which what this post will focus on;
Long ago in a distant time, before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, before the continents resembled what they are today and before opposable thumbs, there existed a ship called ''Pewey.''
Pewey was one of the earliest controversial and likely the most undeservingly hated ship in the show's history. People are allowed to hate ships, any ships, for any reason. That does not make it okay to stigmatize the very real people who like and post those ships. I'm appalled by the treatment people who shipped Pewey received and I'm glad that sort of behavior died down as the show matured.
This got me thinking about the simple yet genius approach the Crewniverse have towards shipping. As everyone knows, shipping is an integral part of any fandom and people put ungodly amounts of effort into producing material relating to their favorite fictional couples, canon or not. Due to this, the creators and creative teams of fictional media have a huge burden to carry. You do not wanna piss off and cause division within your own fanbase. The way the Crewniverse approach this is that they have a policy of ''ship everything and ship as much as possible!''
Some of you may know exactly what I'm talking about but I'll go further into it anyway because I'm in the mood to write today for some reason;
Tumblr media
The scene above is the Crewniverse's animated response to shipping. It's the in-universe equivalent to what Rebecca Sugar and Ian JQ have been saying for years.
The best way to achieve peace and prevent shipping wars, is to give every ship fuel and regard every ship (except p3d0 ones of course) as valid and a net-positive for the community and its creative output.
Look deeper at the dialogue and the relationships between characters and you will notice how vague and complicated pretty much every relationship in the show is. This is by design. Every relationship is purposely suspended in this ''purgatory'' between friendship, platonicity and romantic potential. Barring couple dynamics necessary for the plot like Garnet, Connverse, Rose and Greg, Rose and Pearl etc, every relationship between characters that could be considered potentially ''shippable'' is just vague enough that it neither canonizes nor outright rejects shipping validity.
A recent example of this is in Bismuth Casual. Bismuth is shown having a crush on Pearl, much like Dewey did back in the day. Yet Bismuth herself states that, because Pearl is happy with whatever she has going on now, and because Bismuth wants Pearl to be happy, she won't (yet) approach Pearl with any romantic intent. This gives the ship between them (Bispearl) enough fuel to satisfy shippers, give a character (Bismuth) some sort of closure as a sendoff yet does not establish them as a canon couple, leaving other Pearl shippers satisfied and not feel left in the dust. Due to this, people can put their own spins on what happens next, if anything.
I really hope, that if by some miracle, or when the planets align and Steven Universe as an animated IP makes a comeback, in whatever capacity or form, that the Crewniverse continue on with this philosophy towards shipping. At least for the sake of our collective sanity.
If you've reached the end, thank you for reading through this and please, leave comments and opinions. We all miss this show so the least we can do is have discussions like these to keep the fans inside of us satisfied.
''Sir, this is a Wendy's.''

its nice to see people obsessed over rare obscure sonic characters like julie su i mean ive never head of her
Thank you! But I'm not so sure she's 'Rare' or 'Obscure' - just to newer fans, and older fans who managed to miss the whole Archie run! Soooo, about 100 people know her out of the thousands on this site XD
I can't state just how well-known Julie-Su is to older fans. I mean, looking at my archives of fanart I've got saved, I've got some Julie-Su fanart in here from a little known feller known as 'Ian Jones Quarty' ... No, that's not a joke, newbians - Ian JQ used to go by the name of 'Ian J. Flicky' in sonic spaces (BOY am I used to saying that the other way around!) - and he had once upon a time drawn Julie-Su fanart under this name.
I also have Julie-Su fanart from most of the current IDW run artists, when they were still fans.. But that feels like blackmail at this point :P but trust me, they all know, and half of them were fans back in the day, if not still now XD honestly a little weird that the perception has shifted from 'Sonic Character' to 'EWW STINKY PENDERS NO-GO ZONE' in the past 5 years it seems.
.... I mean, there were also JS haters aplenty then and now XD but whatever, it's whatever, really. But it is weird that people assume you're a Penders fan... I've not gotten that in dedicated archie circles, everybody is just like 'oh yeah Julie-Su was cool' XD

Question! Which artists had the most influence on your art style?
It can be pretty hard to nail down a complete list, but here are a few cartoonists that helped shape me (and my art) into where I am now! Pendleton Ward, Craig Bartlett, Craig McCracken, Rebecca Sugar, Greg Miller, Jim Jinkins, Rob Renzetti, Ian JQ, Klasky-Csupó, J.G. Quintel, and Joe Murray, just to name a few off the top of my head!
The best part about being an artist is growing up being inspired by so many different people! Then as time goes on and you draw more and more, the style you come up with becomes a love letter to all the artists you grew up admiring!
[ask me stuff]
