THE PRINCESS SWAP

Derya

This is a special case and not only because Clarke doesn't have a canon surname: the top row of face options are described in the asset files as "Middle Eastern" and the bottom row are described as "Caucasian". Caucasian is used in the U.S. interchangeably with "white" even though the Caucasus region is in east Europe/west Asia and can be interpreted to encompass parts of Turkey.

Clarke's family members (including parents of both face options) all have Turkish names and if I’m remembering correctly, it’s heavily implied in the text and art that their country is based on Turkey. Which makes the name Clarke really confounding. I wanted to replace it with a Turkish name but I couldn’t find anything that sounded remotely similar. So I chose the unisex name Derya because I like how it sounds!!!!!

Devin Rhee

These face options are described in the asset files as “Asian”. The masc face option’s haircut leaves me no choice but to headcanon him (and by extension the fem face option) as Korean. What the extremely common Korean surname Rhee lacks in being spelled similar to Wright, it makes up for in sounding kinda like Wright. If you were hearing it spoken from another room. Lmao

QUEEN B

Ian Wang / Ina Wang

These face options are described in the asset files as “Asian”. As discussed in Part 1, there are not a lot of sound matches in Asian languages or Spanish for King(sley). I did read a theory online that this LI’s name comes from the fact that they’re the counterpart to the MC who is the titular queen of the series, so I went with the thematic route and chose the surname Wang, which means “king” in Chinese and Korean. The fem face option reminds me of several Korean women I know so I headcanon these face options as Korean, although Wang is a rare surname in Korea whereas it is one of the most common (if not thee most common?) surnames in China. So I guess they could also be Chinese?

Ian Reyes / Ina Reyes

These face options are described in the asset files as “Hispanic”. Same as above, not too many Spanish sound matches, king/queen themes and motifs, etc., so I chose the Spanish surname Reyes which means “kings”.

This one was so hard lmao. These face options are described in the asset files as "Hispanic" and there were not a lot of Spanish-language surnames that are a sound match for Young.

Also a hard one! These face options are described in the asset files as "Asian" which is really broad, and they don't look "typically" East Asian to me or like any East Asian person I know. The masc one reminds me of someone I know who's Filipino so I'm going with that for my headcanon. Again not a lot of sound matches for Young just like in general, and I decided on the Ilocano surname Yadao because it was one of the only Filipino surnames I could find that started with a Y.

These face options are described in the asset files as "Mediterranean", although the wiki does note that there's a scene where they say they're Greek. So I initially decided on the Greek surname Karakostas since it kept the "K-AR-T" sound pattern from Carter but then I changed my mind and gave them the surname Kassavetis because I like John Cassavetes the Greek-American director.

These face options are described in the asset files as "Asian". The "th" sound in Thorne that's found in very few other languages like come on now don't piss me off. These face options honestly give Vietnamese to me but I couldn't find any Vietnamese surnames that matched Thorne and the Cantonese surname Tong sounded closer in my opinion.

The face option on the left is described in the asset files as "Hispanic", and the one on the right is described as "Filipino". A unique situation here as many people in the Philippines have Spanish-language surnames and some speak Spanish due to Spain's historical colonization of the Philippines, meaning "Hispanic" can sometimes apply to Filipinos. We're touching on a complicated issue of using "Hispanic" as an ethnic descriptor but this post is not the place to discuss that. Sooooo since Spanish does not traditionally use the letter W (?) there aren't any Spanish-language surnames starting with W, and the only surname from a Filipino language starting with W that I cound find was Wenceslao which I didn't think was a good match for Wilson. So we're going with the Spanish Villanueva which has the initial "il" sound . Also means "new house" which I think is thematically appropriate for this book? Idk I don't have VIP so I can't play it yet and I just read the summary.

So, I finished another book that was forgotten on my game, and I have to say it: I was one of the people who was against this book when it first came out and we learned the plot was about a relationship between a student and a professor, (just for the record I'm still against this kind of relationship), but a big shout out to PB that made an exceptional LI, like they hadn't made for so long! And they actually built their relationship along the chapters in a way that it wasn't forgotten how wrong it was, but they fought to be together against all the odds. AND here I am already missing this man of pixels 🤡🤡🤡

“Why, Raven?”

A teary-eyed Ina stood in the doorway, confused and hurt seeing Raven pack up her bags. 

Raven struggles not to comfort or cry and continues packing without looking at her. 

“I think we’re not compatible. I want to look for different people.”

“What happened? What did I do?”

When Raven didn’t respond, Ina grabbed her wrist to bring her face to face but Raven avoided her eyes. 

“You owe me that.”

“I’m telling you, I don’t feel that we’re compatible.”

Ina wasn’t satisfied with her answer as she turns back to packing. 

“We’ve been together for 2 years. What’s with all this? Did I do something?”

Raven didn’t know how to get Ina off of her back, her next words burned into Ina’s heart. 

“I want to live my life, find someone else. I got bored.”

Ina lets go of Raven, taking a step back from her.

“I see. Well, I don’t want to hold you back.”

Ina walked out of the room, slamming the door with frustration causing Raven to flinch.

Raven’s eyes were brimming with tears but she refused to let them fall.

It’s better this way.

As time passed, Raven received many phone calls, texts, and harsh voicemails about the way Raven broke up with Ina. Most specifically, an angry Aunty A, furious Jesse, Tal and Callie waiting for answers. She didn’t answer but she didn't ignore it either. She deserved it but thought it was better to distance herself than to hurt others more.  

I can’t miss her, I left her. 

It’s not my place.

Ina traced the edges of the Wardin heirloom resting on her neck. 

*Flashback*

She retrieved the jewelry box and brought it back to Ina, letting Ina lean onto her. Raven gestured for Ina to open it causing her to gasp lightly. The silver necklace with a locket that had “Wardin” engraved into it.

“Raven, it’s beautiful…”

“It was passed down in my family, the last one to wear it was my mother. She gave it to me before she passed. She wanted me to give this to the person I love. I haven’t let people in for years and it feels nice that I let you in. I can be myself around you and you make me feel safe. I trust you and I haven’t trusted anyone, but my guardians, since my mother died.”

Ina held back tears when she looked at Raven, who looked back at her with so much love filled in her eyes. She turned her attention to the necklace, gently running her finger across the name.

*End of Flashback*

Lillian steps into the room, sighing as she sees Ina staring at the necklace. She lets out a sob as she spots Lillian through the mirror, letting her be held as she let out the pain from the memory.

“She wants to see other people and she got bored with me.”

Lillian was furious, she never expected that to come from Raven. 

She inquired about Raven’s whereabouts, she ended up at Tal’s place where Raven was temporarily staying. 

“Lillian?”

“How dare you walk away, why did you leave? How can you say you were bored?!”

Raven looks around and lets Lillian in to avoid waking up the neighbours. 

“Come in.”

She sensed Lillian’s reluctance.

“Please.”

Raven sat Lillian down and offered some tea but decided to make it for herself after her glare.

“What changed in you to say you were bored?”

Raven sighed. 

“I lied.”

Sexy Beast (2000)

Don is like an auctioneer of profanity.

His presence is prophesied well before the back of his bald pate first appears onscreen, nervous glances between people and tense dinner conversations enough to reveal that this criminal is not merely a crook but rather a complete monster. And when Don does arrive, what a nightmare he proves to be. A controlling presence, he feigns calm and clarity before erupting at random, sometimes in a physical outburst, but always with plenty of verbal abuse to accompany. Ben Kingsley’s performance here is menacing in how he manages to rattle off a litany of screeds, carpet-bombing the space with insults and derogatory statements, all while maintaining a perfectly neutral expression. It’s almost as if he were simply stating facts, albeit in rapid-fire fashion with a raised tone. Unfortunately, though, for Don, while the pen may be mightier than the sword, even words can’t cut through the spray of a shotgun. Don may view himself as a master of his own domain, able to call the bluff of lesser sheeple by his own approximation, but boy can that self-centered mentality backfire in spectacular fashion under the proper circumstances.

Despite its dire atmosphere, Sexy Beast is a darkly comic gem. The film signals this early on, freeze-framing Ray Winstone in peak indignity as he attempts to vault over a poolside lounge chair to accompany the title card. The peak of male form. Throughout, just how far a character is willing to push the line goes from being frightening to funny in insane ways. Don is a complete head case, so why wouldn’t he piss with his hands on his hips and intentionally miss the toilet? The undoing of Don is a theatrical ultra violence piece spliced into the London Underground proceedings, escalating to the point where his face has to be shown in shadow. A Baphomet style figure first haunts Gal’s dreams and then liberates Don from his coffin in Hell, the criminal unimpressed. And yet despite all of this, the characters here are jarring. McShane gives every Scorsese gangster a run for their money when he tells Winstone he could be dead at any moment. Don has a chilling effect on the hacienda during his visits. And yet in spite of it all, the strongest through-line that emerges is Gal’s love for DeeDee. He makes that clear at every turn and clings to it to the end. Even though a boulder can strike those tiled hearts, they endure.
