The Weird World of Online Simulators by Declan Findlen

In a world of crazy, little surprises me. Nowadays I read a shocking piece of news every time I open Twitter. For anyone and everyone, reality can be overwhelming. So overwhelming that you sometimes just want to lock yourself in a room and leave it all behind. But at the same, that’s boring, right? I’m here today to tell you guys about gaming simulators, the crazy trend that does its best to replicate real life……….. in a video game. That way you can avoid real life but also do real life at the exact same time!!

It is pretty safe to say (although you could argue differently) that simulators really took off in 2000 with the famous creation of The Sims. Having now sold 200 millions copies worldwide of various editions, the franchise is one of the most popular of all-time. The game is a real-life simulator, in which you do everything you might do normally. You can get a job, create some hobbies, buy and decorate a house. You can meet a significant other, build chemistry through dates and events, move in together, and eventually tie the knot. Some modifications even create virtual sex, with kinks and bedroom personalities. The possibilities are endless. The game is classified as a sandbox game, meaning that there are absolutely no goals to spend your time on. You spend your “life” however you might like.

The common question that follows, and one that is a fair question to ask, is: what’s the point? Some claim it to be a sad form of dealing with an unfortunate real life, hoping that being a successful Sim can provide some sort of worth and confidence. A replacement life of sorts. Personally, I think that’s an overblown assumption that really has turned into more of a joke. There is nothing wrong with enjoying simulators and absolutely nothing pathetic about it. I’ve played a ton of The Sims and I loved every damn second. I just want that on the record, because I’m about to start talking about how weird the simulator world has gotten.

From there, the simulator realm saw Roller Coaster Tycoon take off and Harvest Moon stayed at the top of charts worldwide. Users were spending hours building imaginary theme parks and tending to their crops to obtain imaginary food. Today, there is a simulator for pretty much anything. Any sort of transportation (planes, trains, trucks, sports cars), occupation (surgeon, chef), or hobby (hiking, sewing) can be simulated from the comfort of your bed. The mundane, boring grind is essential in simulators, as the realism factor serves as the grip to gamers. There is no intense action and there are no special abilities. Just doing stuff you maybe can’t do in real life because of cost or time or location.

One quick search on the Internet and you can find a list of the most absurd simulators that had to have been made for Internet clicks and laughs. Here is a quick list:

I really have no idea how people spend time on these games. All of the hours coding, testing, creating software for…...flushing toilets? Drinking soda? I could imagine all of these things being necessary in an all-encompassing Sims-like game in which life is completely replicated. But as standalone titles, I am just forced to sit back and laugh at the Internet and what people are capable of. Here is a little gameplay of I Am Bread, in which the guy pretty much spends the entire time flipping himself around on the floor and trying to get to a toaster so that he can be crisped and buttered. As mentioned, this video generated a ton of Internet activity, pushing over 200,000 views as of February 15th. I have to imagine that the creators of the game made their money back on this one. The title went extremely viral.

All in all, to each their own. If you wanna be a piece of bread, be a piece of bread. There really is something out there for everyone. Personally, I can’t wait for the pasta simulator.
