Dark, dreary wintery nights are finally passing us and this week there is a sense that spring is breaking through the skies as quickly as Storm Doris swept through the night! The lighter evenings and the brighter skies in the morning bring such welcome comfort to the working day and spring to our step. Spring is officially my favourite time of the year, there is an excitement in the air, the summer months lie ahead and our windows and doors can suddenly be opened again with light cascading into the house. The children can suddenly play outside again in the evening, this week the cobwebs and dead leaves were cleared from the trampoline and the bouncing began with laughter in the garden and a dog running chaotically at the base trying to join in! Not only does spring make you feel more alive, beautiful new life form is created with the plants rearing their pretty heads through a mound of weeds and soil. Daffodils and snow drops grace our countryside and to me remind of why England is such a lovely place to live. Little lambs start to skip through the fields. The warmer air and positively radiant sunshine greets us all with welcome comfort to our days and reminds us that summer is within welcome reach to our lives. I personally find spring is the perfect time to make fresh starts and plans, not the New Year where i am hanging from a busy challenging and expensive Christmas and still a whole month or two of dark evenings and depressing weather. Spring has most definitely sprung!

There's this running joke about Sundown that everyone knows. People will tell you that the night life here is crazy, and then - depending on the kind of company you keep - they'll either look like they've told the world's best joke, or they'll get pretty quiet after that. Maybe a little sad-looking. Either way, the punchline is always the same. Just a warning.

Don't get caught up in it.

People always assume the mundane route, because that makes the most sense, doesn't it? Drugs. Street crime. Maybe gang wars. Sometimes the human condition is just the worst-case scenario, and you have to deal with that. Around here, though, ill-intentioned humans aren't the only thing lurking in the dark. Turns out that's worse. 

Sundown boasts an above-average population of supernatural entities, and for reasons nobody can quite narrow down, that number is still growing. Don't get it twisted: human-on-human crime is still very much present. But the number of missing persons reports and cold case files certainly does suggest that the local population is a little hungrier than most.

  If you find yourself on the side of the otherworldly, welcome: you'll no doubt find that hunting is easy, territory is easily negotiated, and hardly anyone will bat an eye if you're looking a little haggard around the full moon, or first thing in the morning, or... always. Consider it a perk of outnumbering the human population roughly three-to-one: you'll find yourself understood more often than not.

If you're - well - only human, the welcome still applies. Just be cautious. If you're not prepared to face the city's underbelly, then keep your head down. Get into the habit of giving other people a wide berth, especially after dark, and not looking too hard at the stains on someone's sneakers. It may be the difference between making it home, and getting - as you've no doubt been warned - caught up in the night life.
