Martin Luther King Jr was not the sacrificial lamb of civil rights like some of us were taught to believe. He was a husband. A father. A minister. An organizer. A friend. He did not voluntarily sacrifice himself on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. He was indirectly executed by the state.

MLK was not always a firm believer in nonviolence, and in his earliest days of activism he armed himself in self defense. MLK wasn't about asking permission to protest and routinely marched in the street. MLK denounced US war, poverty and capitalism. The FBI was paranoid about the rise of a "Black Messiah" and actively targeted him. At the time of MLK's assassination (1968) the majority of white people across this country despised him.

It is not an accident that nearly all of the prominent leaders of the civil rights movement are either in prison, living in exile, or dead. We have made major steps towards Black liberation, but the work of our activist ancestors is not done. Too often we confuse change for progress. "Black Lives Matter" is the new "I Am A Man".

Antiracism must be collectively authored and maintained. We are each responsible for disrupting all forms of racism and bigotry whenever we encounter them, regardless of what it may cost us.
