#monthly reading lists#wow talk about an eclectic mix#of complex and really really not complex#but this is just what happens to be around at the beginning of the month#i'm halfway through east and debating going on#i got a vibe that now's the time to finally tackle brideshead so it's coming from the library#rereading 'deathmark' made me want to reread stradling's other latest release#the ancient rome book looked delightful and i have it out from the library#and i figure that might put me in the mood for more ancient rome and i've been meaning to reread julius caesar so that goes on the list#i just found out clement's last book was a frindle sequel so you better bet i snatched that up from the library as soon as i learned that#and it's valentine's day and also coming on to lent so i'm in the mood to read romance and random indie fantasy ebooks#i've got several options#(and fantasy might include heyer-esque regency so the nina clare's an option too)#i've also got some books i'm finishing#and some laying around that i probably won't start but may well displace some on this list#one thing i like about the new format i'm trying is that this list is more explicitly not a reading list#just a list of what's intriguing to me at the beginning of the month#to contrast with what i wind up reading by the end of it#so i can put an unrealistic mix together and see what happens

i actually just finished my herman melville/nathaniel hawthorne rpf book last night (yes they DID kiss) so i can cross that one off the list 💗 some other ones are ummm
some of my Old Books which don't have very (or any) descriptive book covers to share, and therefore relegated to the honorable mentions section:

Me: God, I hate how over hyped the 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie is. They cut so much stuff. They sped up so many things. And yet everyone treats it like it's God's gift.
Also me: Ok ok look at this scene. This is all one shot. Sweeping through the ball. Lydia and Kitty are drunk. Mrs. Bennet is being loud and boastful. Mary's embarrassing herself and Mr. Bennet's only making it worse. Mr. Collins won't stop stalking Darcy. This scene is incredible, they condensed an entire chapter of Bennet Family Nonsense into a single 2 minute shot. Amazing. Perfection.
Me: They cut out Mr. and Mrs. Hurst and they are vital to show how different Mr. Bingley is from his two sisters and that it's not just Caroline who thinks too highly of herself. The fact that Bingley somehow grew up normal when two of his five sisters behave this way is supposed to be surprising. Plus Mr. Hurst's laziness and tendency to nap and play cards contrasts with Darcy choosing to read silently just like Lizzie!
Also Me: The costume designer chose to set the story in the late 1790s when the book was written rather than the 1810s when it was published, so the costumes are in a transitory period between the very end of Georgian and the start of Regency styles. Look at Caroline, she's new money and full of herself, so look at her waistline. Fully empire waisted, almost too high, and totally up to date with the latest fashions, while only Lizzie and Jane's newest and best dresses are properly empire waisted and saved for the balls. Otherwise their waistlines are a little bit lower because their casual dresses are older and out of style. Just a quick glance at Caroline tells us everything we need to know about her compared to the Bennet sisters.
Me: I cannot stand the rain scene. The almost kiss makes NO. SENSE. That didn't happen. And it wouldn't have happened. Keeping the confession in the Collins' abode so Darcy barges in on an alone Lizzie in a manner that's totally improper would have been so much better. I don't like it. And don't even get me started on "most ardently" THAT'S NOT THE LINE IN THE BOOK.
Also Me: *Squeals at The Hand Scene*

I DO LIKE IT. i just don't think it's the best adaptation and i don't like the pedestal it's on#and it's not my favorite version of P&P (that's reserved for Bride and Prejudice. so good. so fun. so great.)#it has some parts that i will never ever shut up because i love them. but also i will rage about 'most ardently' if given the chance#overall they did great with the movie length vs the full series length that 1995 got so i get the changes made#but still let me complain a bit ok#you can see that the 'also me' sections are longer since overall i probably do have more good to say than bad#i just like complaining that THIS is the version held up on a pedestal when i'd rather it not be#worth noting that last summer i made my dad read pride and prejudice and then we watched this movie right after he finished#and he LOVED the rain scene. and i looked at him in SHOCK and i was like dad that scene is half of my complaints#now i've read the book a billion times and watched every single adaptation i can get my hands on#while dad read the book that one time and only watched the movie. so we definitely came into the movie from different povs.#but the part where i rambled about the ballroom disaster scene is almost word for word what i said to my dad as we watched.#anyway yeah this is me just rambling about this movie since i'm currently watching a bunch of youtube reactions to it#back to back to back and all the thoughts are coming up. me enjoying people's reactions. but also being like ahhhhh to parts.#and that's 'ahhhh' in a good way and 'ahhhh' in a bad way. depending on the scene

i finished the merry wives of windsor today btw. 4 shakespeare plays left to go
#tales from diana#i'm in a pickle bc i've been burning through the remainders in the last year or so in a way that makes me... melancholic#i didnt hate merry wives even though i wasn't looking forward to it for a very long time bc i knew it was mostly prose#im neither a big falstaff fan (im sorry) not do i get the most charm from shakespeare from his prose#but admittedly it was still rather enjoyable as a comedy. you dont get a lot of fake cuckoldry plots from shakespeare specifically#not in comedy certainly! so i enjoyed the trickery of it#not the worst shakespeare play as far as pure entertainment value at all. nothing's as boring as henry viii#that one was a big disappointment#i have one play in each category left (counting the romances as their own category) (and counting kinsmen as his work)#coriolanus. king john. measure for measure actually! and two noble kinsmen#i know a lot about measure for measure already i just have never read it in full. twelfth night was like that as a reading experience too#i wasn't in a rush to get to it but in the case of measure. i wanted to get merry wives out of the way first#and leave my last pure comedy to be something i would almost certainly enjoy more#now im kind of in a pickle bc i feel the ecstasy of being tempted to just finish the complete plays already#but i also wanna pace myself and read other things#i kinda have this idea of what if i saved the last 4 to read in 2025? but we're not even halfway through 2024#i dont have that kinda patience#maybe ill reread some old favorites in the meantime or something. idk#i dont think i mentioned it on here but i got the rsc complete works second edition from 2022#last month! bc my riverside is in delicate condition. but i switched back between the two when reading merry wives#i just couldnt help it. i miss my mother. it's always going to be the most personally comfortable book for me to read from#i read the majority of these plays in that volume. that book TAUGHT ME to read shakespeare#but i need to be strong and i also enjoy comparative literary studies and a more recent book has a lot to offer#im yammering on to myself incoherently im sure nobody really cares what im saying. even i dont! ok goodbye goodnight

#READING IS SUCH A THRILL DID Y'ALL KNOW ABOUT THIS#i've acquired two books off that queerplatonic ace rep rec list so far and i am. thrilled about it#the first one is not like. Extraordinary haha but i read like two hundred and sixty pages last night and it was enjoyable!#i have to remember that ya fiction is ya fiction sometimes. haha#but!!! ordered another one online (first one is a library book which was SO fulfilling to go grab) and it got here today and i'm SO pumped#reviews online were largely positive + complimented the like. visuals and dark fairy tale feel to it#and while one review said that the prose wasn't that good (i am always looking for writing that is Technically good)#(technically as in like. the technical aspects of it are well done. it's well executed)#i am still excited about the kind of character dynamics it promises me#i'll take some clumsy prose if it gets me platonic intimacy. i swear to god i will#ALSO IT'S ABOUT THE WILD HUNT AND I AM SO OBSESSED WITH THE WILDHUNT#and i was promised nonbinary knight character??? so. new fixation incoming perhaps#only choice now is whether to finish the first one or jump right into the next haha#i have what. less than a hundred pages of not even bones to finish?#i should get through that one haha#apparently it's a trilogy and the qpr comes in later so :rolling_eyes:#we'll see if i'm invested enough#or i'll read the webtoon or smth haha#I FUCKING LOVE THE LIBRARY I CAN REQUEST + HOLD THE NEXT TWO BOOKS#god. using public utilities is such a rush#anyway!!!! excited excited :)#valentine notes

Now that one month has passed the time started racing again and i feel like I'm almost home again and have no time left here lmao
#like what#I've filled up my weekends with city trips#got 5 planned now#busan‚ gwangju‚ gyeongju‚ sokcho‚ and daegu#and one time suwon somewhere in between there#so essentially half of my weekends are booked out and i have a lot of work to do for uni as well#so time will fly by#it's almost scary#i still haven't done much in seoul either so i want to do something small (like one activity) every weekend I'm here now#i should go to the national museum tomorrow so i start Doing stuff this weekend already#i wanna go for another run tomorrow morning too if my legs feel up for it (because oh boy did it feel nice to run and i work out a lot at#home and don't usually get extremely sore because i think my body is used to most of the movements but this took me out#i love it though. love some sore muscles)#anyway#i also have to write my term papers now and finish my assignment for tuesday and prepare for that stupid interview#I'm having fun here#void screams

#I honestly don't understand why people say audiobooks aren't real books?#I have 0 time to sit down and read a book#audiobooks are literally the only way I've read a book recently#tf you mean they don't count?#op's tags 👇#ramble#my first thought was like: how is this even a debate what about blind people. not every book comes in braille but MOST have an audiobook#or dyslexic people#you still enjoyed the book!! you still absorbed it!!! you got EXACTLY the same thing as people who read the words!!!#how does it not count????#i guess you miss out on the 'learning new vocab' you get through seeing the words but also#i don't really do audiobooks but i do a lot of podcasts esp fiction podcasts#and i have ABSOLUTELY picked up new stuff from there that helps with my writing#someone please explain how this is even an argument of COURSE it counts????#idk in my opinion finishing a book means 'i put the words in my brain and i thought about them and i enjoyed a story'#not 'i held a stack of paper in my hands for a bit'#i'm v lucky that i do have time to sit and read. and whenever i commute anywhere it's public transport so i CAN bring a book with me#but if i didn't have the free time or had to drive for hours everywhere i would be STOKED to still get to enjoy books#it's been REALLY bothering me lmao idk why i feel so strongly#for some reason it's giving the same energy as like. being told you can't take a comic or manga from the library bc it's not a 'real' book#of course it's a real book it's a story somebody wrote down#i can see this spiralling into 'if you have a kindle you aren't reading'. you have to sniff the paper. feel the papercuts

My glamour-adventures in FF14 continue, with several different outfits depending on levels (sometimes bcs lvl-locked glamours, sometimes bcs I had an idea and kind of wanted to use it):
BLM at lvl 60:

SAM at lvl 50 (any higher and I'd be using the MNK-outfit):

#and yeah. i'm slowly leveling everything up to 60. then i'll unlock DNC and GNB#after that i'll try to focus on finishing Stormblood. and then i'll level everything up to 70#and then i'll be unlocking RPR and SGE. i'm really looking forward to figuring out SGE.#barrier-healing is an interesting concept. and i'd like to see what it's like outside of SCH and its double-weird mechanics#everyone else gets ONE weird mechanic (WHM's lilies. AST's cards) SCH gets TWO (faerie + aetherflow)#so i'd like to see if SGE dials the weirdness of that class back a bit. or at least lets me use barriers as an ''instant-save''#we'll see in due time. also also? i've given in to the marketplace (anemo-jacket was too cheap not to)#and the poncho needs mats that requires a guild to get. so marketplace it is.#got a bit distracted trying to find some way to make gil from the marketplace afterwards with mixed success#there were some glamour-items whose mats were MORE EXPENSIVE than the glamour. so crafting didn't help.#and ofc the prices fluctuate and just bcs you're ''selling for the cheapest'' doesn't mean that people are buying#so in comparison to doing the duty-roulette as a requested-class? where i can make like 100k in two hours?#not exactly a competitive rate for gil-making. but it was an experience at least?#also? got culinarian (it had the easiest-to-access mats) up to lvl 80 by grinding scrip#so that's fun. dunno what i'm supposed to do with that. but at least i now have a lot of mastery-books#personal stuff#ff14#video games
