Ramblings about the Milkovich Family

I get that they are not the main characters but I wish the show gave us some details.

Is Laura just Mickey and Mandy’s mom or she mom to Iggy and Colin as well? And my stance generally is whatever you want or whatever makes sense for the story I’m writing. But when I see multiple options each choice can change aspects of the story and I wish the show made those choices for me.

For Laura as a character if we see the older brothers as her sons and that informs who she is and the trauma she possibly went through. To have one child at 13 and continued to have more shows how trapped she was. Forced to have multiple children all in her teen years. And from there I can see why she would run away. (honestly I can see why she would run away regardless but 4 vs 2 children is another level of whoa)

But maybe Mandy’s comment was about Mickey and he’s the brother that she had at 13. What does that say about Mickey? What was relationship to her and how does that inform his view on relationships. Watching Ian get in relationships with older men could remind him of his parents which he knows is abusive.

For the siblings ages I know people like to put Iggy as the oldest but that doesn't work if we know from the first season Iggy is in Juvie so he can't be much older then Mickey so I put Colin as the oldest. But maybe Iggy is the oldest but is only a couple months older then Mickey. What if the three brothers do have different mothers and they are only a few months apart? How does that inform the sibling dynamic? That could explain why they don't have a Fiona type in their family because what do you do when you're all the same age and the best way to survive is to just live with each other and not necessarily look out for each other.

This isn't even covering all the other random cousins/siblings that are running around.

Basically sometimes I enjoy thinking about the Milkovich family and making my own assumptions and other times I get overwhelmed and wish the show told us a bit more. Because even a simple choice of making one brother older can actually be very important.

“Steve, come get your furry little menace! He’s chewing up my laces again,” Robin grumbled.

“Maybe if your laces are ruined, you’ll finally buy a new pair of shoes,” Steve snarked. Steve walked to the living room to find Robin attempting to tie her old Converse only to snatch back her hands every time the kitten took a swipe at the laces in question. “He’s just a baby. He wants to play.”

“He can get his own laces to play with, then. And there’s nothing wrong with my shoes. I’m not going to go buy new shoes when these are perfectly functional. And my favorite color.”

Steve scooped the kitten up even as he kept reaching for the laces and cuddled him to his chest. Steve rubbed gently behind the kitten’s ears until the kitten relaxed into tiny purrs.

“What do you think, Dustin? Should Robin get new shoes? Raise your paw if you agree with me,” Steve said. He lifted the kitten’s right paw and waved it a bit, making the kitten squirm. “See, he agrees with me.”

Robin snorted and rolled her eyes at his teasing smile. “I still can’t believe you named him Dustin.”

The kitten chose that moment to start climbing up Steve’s shirt to reach his shoulder. His tiny claws pricked at Steve’s skin through the thin fabric but they were so small, they barely hurt at all. Steve laughed as the kitten settled on his shoulder and began to mew at the top of his lungs.

“It’s not my fault he looks like a Dustin,” Steve insisted. When he brought the kitten home two days ago, Robin tried to name him something else but Steve put his foot down about it. He found the kitten, and he thought the kitten was a Dustin, so no other name was allowed. 

Dustin let out another mew so loud he nearly toppled over. Steve pulled him off his shoulder with an amused huff. Dustin wriggled incessantly in his hands. Steve lost his grip on him but thankfully he had gotten him close enough to the ground by then that the fall was negligible to a cat.

“Okay, okay, we’ll play for a little while, you needy baby.”

He and Robin were waiting for payday to run to the pet store for more supplies. They were lucky that their neighbor across the hall had an old litter box that her cat had outgrown, and a couple of spare food bowls. She had even given them a few cans of wet food, cooing over the kitten all the while. Dustin, apparently, was a charming little guy. He obviously took after Steve. Robin had punched him on the arm when he said as much.

In the meantime, they were using old bits of string and a little orange ball Robin had stolen back when they worked at a mini-golf place. The kitten seemed to enjoy them well enough but Steve planned on getting him fancier playthings and some catnip. He rolled the ball across the floor and the kitten chased after it. He pounced on it, wobbly, which sent the ball rolling again for another chase. Steve laughed. Robin giggled along with him.

“He’s lucky he’s adorable. Otherwise we’d be having problems, him and I,” Robin said with a grin. Her mischievous demeanor softened slightly. “I’m glad you found him, you big old softie. Now you can stop moping so much.”

Steve ducked away when she reached to ruffle his hair. 

“Yeah, yeah,” Steve said, lightheartedly. “Maybe if I do a good job with him, someone will finally let me have a kid.” 

The kitten had apparently gotten bored of the ball and was attempting to climb up the back of the couch. Steve quickly grabbed him so he would damage the upholstery. He booped the kitten’s nose.

“What do you think, baby? Will I be a good dad? Be honest.”

Dustin grabbed his finger and gnawed at it while making the most precious sounds. A purring mew.  Steve’s heart melted; though from what he had read, he really shouldn’t let Dustin get accustomed to using his hands as playthings.

Steve resigned himself to losing half his paycheck to cat toys.

when it's been so long since you've read a fic that you forget about it and you find it in the search tags and start reading it again

and it's great, if a little familiar, but you've read a lot of these sorts of fics bc you like this tag a lot, so you assume it's nothing

3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?

That's a really, really difficult question. I have a few favorites that I kinda rotate in my head. I'm really proud of the WIPs I'm working on right now too, I think several of these are gonna hop up to the top of my favorites list once they're finished.

I think right now I'd have to say In the Gray You are Golden. Yeah. That one really was a burst of pure inspiration and I think I managed to catch the tone, the mood, the world, and the character arcs I was all going for in a way that was poetic but economical, no superfluous scenes, and I genuinely think it's one of my strongest pieces I've ever done.

Other Buddie favorites include Further Than Blood (Or Than Bones), Let My Ink Stain Your Pages, and Your Fingerprints Smeared on My Heart (Lead Me Back to You).

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

See, I say I won't write something, and then I end up writing it. I said I wouldn't do a Zombie Apocalypse AU and here we are. I said I wouldn't do a [redacted] AU on the 911 Dispatch podcast and now I'm writing it. I said I wouldn't do a [redacted] AU and then several friends batted their eyes at me and suddenly here I am with a whole-ass plot and several scenes written. So really, saying I won't write something is the moment the devil starts laughing.

Right now I do have a few Xedgin ideas that I don't know if I'll ever write. I simply don't have time and I still want to write my Buddie fics. But maybe after October! We'll see! The image of Xenk saying to Ed, "Hush, I will stop thy mouth" and kissing him burned into my brain and I can 100% see them being the Beatrice and Benedick of a Much Ado-type fic, and @kitkatpancakestack is shamelessly encouraging me to do a Stardust AU for them (listen... if you told me that man was a fallen star... I'd believe you). I also feel like they'd fit a Pride & Prejudice AU really well, and I had a lot of fun with my Witcher Austen AU (and watching Bridgerton did NOT help avoiding that plot bunny).

I've also had a lot (a lot) of Buddie smut ideas that I've never written because again, total lack of time. I'd rather ignore those and focus on my plot-centric Buddie fics. I have toyed with the idea of a Star Trek Buddie AU but I don't know if I'd ever write it since I have no fuckin' clue what the plot would be.

So yes. Fic ideas galore. It's just unfortunately a matter of prioritizing and having only so many hours in the day (which is part of why I launched my Patreon TBH in the hope that if I get enough sign-ups I'll have more time for fic since I won't have to work a second job anymore).

I have two questions:

1. Have you ever considered writing a book that you would want to get published?

2. I wonder if you will explore Matt’s blindness in TRT. Like for example at the end of the day Matt did lose his eyesight and maybe sometimes wished he could see Jane. It doesn’t have to be a big thing because Matt has accepted his disability but like a moment when he’s just really wants it. Idk I thought it would cool

1. I’ve thought about it, yes! And I’ve actually got an (unedited) trilogy of vaguely humorous, post-apocalyptic scifi adventure books that’s like... halfway written, and that I’d love to get published. I was actually in the process of working on Book 1 when Covid hit, and then my writer’s group kinda... collapsed, which is when I promptly discovered that as an extrovert, I desperately need interaction to make The Story go. No interaction, no drive (and that’s also why fic works fine). And sometimes I toy with the idea of starting up again, maybe with a new writer’s group. I’m also looking into taking a lot of the original elements of TRT and then self-publishing that (with some changes to get Disney off my back obvs), which would let me keep the fic up, too. Not sure! I definitely have plans to try to get a book published eventually though!

2. Sometimes I’ve thought about it! I may touch on it eventually, though very, very delicately. Like you said, it wouldn’t be big because I really do think Matt’s accepted he’s blind and he doesn’t see it as a bad thing, and it’s really not. I do admittedly think he probably still gets understandably frustrated at how blatantly inaccessible some things still are (ex: i literally walked by a coffee shop that had a printed piece of paper inside the window in small print that said ‘large print or braille menu accessible on request!’ and I was like... ok but a blind/visually impaired person can’t read that???). Cause that’s the truth of it - he is still blind. He’s got a disability that affects his day to day and even if he’s happy the way he is (or that’s how I read him), he still needs his aids. I’ve tried to make that clear in TRT - Jane’s taken up his labeling system with braille, she leaves things in *very* specific places because Matt’s got an organization system he needs, he uses his ear pieces and refreshable braille display. And yeah, as someone who’s disabled myself, I could see him now and then going... ‘I wish I could see just for a second’ when there’s no solution for something - when he’s touching old pictures of his dad, or now and then when he’s with Jane, in the same way I’m sometimes like, ‘I wish I could literally run somewhere without pain, just to feel the wind’. It’s a passing thought usually, but it’s probably there now and then for him. So the thought’s rattling around in my brain, definitely. If the right moment in fic comes I can see touching on it!
