there are two simultaneous truths: serpents infesting a rich valley pose a danger and render its resources unreachable. yet, eradicating them is ineffective and costly. the first order knows this basic principle, as the empire once did. the crime syndicates that slither in the margins of the galaxy, and in turn, at the edges of legality, are just that — hungry serpents, a thousand-headed, chasing profits. cutting one off spurs many more. they cannot be rid of, but the venom is a resource in its own right, and if utilized effectively, if the creature is stripped of its teeth, it can be made a weapon. then, it stands for the institution to adopt a pragmatic philosophy: permit their illicit dealings within a controlled parameter. the distribution of weapons, employment of militia and bounty hunters, control over trade routes, it is all made easier through such an agreement.

ren had little care for the details of commerce & contract, even as he'd stood in the grand chamber, listening to snoke's tirade reverberating off the walls in its incessancy. a syndicate had overstepped its boundaries, that notion had swayed his attention, with the intimate knowledge it would be him that would handle this defiance. they are in possession of prototype schematics for a weapon the galaxy was not prepared to know of.

now, as he strode through the corridor of the ship he & his troopers had infiltrated, holographic displays flickered with the disruption posed by the buzz of his lightsaber, the angry red sizzling vividly. the dim lighting caught on his mask, reflecting like embers off the indents. the knight looked at the woman as she looked at him, unmoving. beneath the metal veil, he might've even been amused. there was a ribbon of darkness swirling in her blood, thrumming beneath her flesh, and he could not ignore it, even as she held a blaster to his chest.
