Kamala Harris just announced that her vice president will be Minnesota governor Tim Walz. Based on the coverage so far I'm really reassured by this decision.
The Washington Post did an obviously great job of making a prepared article for each option, considering how long an article they had up 7 minutes after the announcement.
((Okay technically it's not an official announcement yet it's "according to three people familiar with the pick, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a decision that is not yet public." But listen. I am 99% sure this is a weather balloon. (Meaning: a deliberate leak to gauge reaction.) Because the sheer weakness or incompetence on the part of the Harris campaign that it would take for three people to all confirm that within a few hours hours of each other and the planned announcement it is massive.))

Honestly this decision, from everything I've read and can tell, looks like it's brilliant politics.
Important Context: The vice president(ial candidates)'s job in an election is not to be similar to the president. The vice president's job on the ballot is very, very much specifically to be different from the president. Why? So they can cover each others' weaknesses. Especially regionally.
(Sidenote: I feel a bit ridiculous saying this. But genuinely if you want to get a stronger understanding of how US elections really work. Go watch seasons 6 and 7 of The West Wing. Genuinely, a lot of politicians have said - especially back in its day - that that was the most accurate depiction of an election they'd ever seen. Also specifically features an entire arc about a contested Democratic primary convention, so also very good if you're interested in understanding weird nominating convention shenanigans.)
From the article:
"Harris’s choice for a running mate was among the most closely watched decisions of her fledgling campaign, as she sought to bolster the ticket’s prospects for victory in November and rapidly find someone who could be a governing partner. In picking Walz, she has selected a seasoned politician with executive governing experience and signaled the importance of Midwestern battleground states such as Wisconsin and Michigan.
Walz’s foray into politics came later in life: He spent more than two decades as a public school teacher and football coach, and as a member of the Army National Guard, before running for Congress in his 40s. In 2006, he defeated a Republican to win Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District--a rural, conservative area--and won reelection five times before leaving Congress to run for governor.
Walz was first elected governor in 2018 and handily won reelection in 2022. Though little-known outside his state, Walz emerged publicly as one of the earliest names mentioned as a possible running mate for Harris, and in the ensuing days he made the rounds on television as an outspoken surrogate for the vice president...
“These are weird people on the other side. They want to take books away, they want to be in your exam room. … They are bad on foreign policy, they are bad on the environment, they certainly have no health care plan, and they keep talking about the middle-class,” Walz told MSNBC in July. “As I said, a robber baron real estate guy and a venture capitalist trying to tell us they understand who we are? They don’t know who we are.”
Walz also has faced criticism from Republicans that his policies as governor were too liberal, including legalizing recreational marijuana for adults, protecting abortion rights, expanding LGBTQ protections, implementing tuition-free college for low-income Minnesotans and providing free breakfast and lunch for schoolchildren in the state.
But many of those initiatives are broadly popular. Walz also signed an executive order removing the college-degree requirement for 75 percent of Minnesota’s state jobs, a move that garnered bipartisan support and that several other states have also adopted.
“What a monster. Kids are eating and having full bellies, so they can go learn, and women are making their own health-care decisions,” Walz said sarcastically in a July 28 interview with CNN when questioned whether such policies would be fodder for conservative attacks, later adding: “If that’s where they want to label me, I’m more than happy to take the [liberal] label.”
Walz also spoke at a kickoff event in St. Paul for a Democratic canvassing effort, casting Trump as a “bully.”
“Don’t lift these guys up like they’re some kind of heroes. Everybody in this room knows--I know it as a teacher--a bully has no self-confidence. A bully has no strength. They have nothing,” Walz said at the event, sporting a camouflage hunting hat and T-shirt.
Walz has explained that he felt some Democrats’ practice of calling Trump an existential threat to democracy was giving him too much credit, which prompted his decision to denounce the GOP nominee instead as being “weird.”
“I do believe all those things are a real possibility, but it gives him way too much power," Walz said on CNN’s “State of the Union” regarding the Democrats’ rhetoric. “Listen to the guy. He’s talking about Hannibal Lecter, shocking sharks, and just whatever crazy thing pops into his mind.”
If Walz is elected vice president, under state law, Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan (D) would assume the governorship for the rest of his term. Minnesota Senate president Bobby Joe Champion, a Democrat, would become lieutenant governor."

This guy. Sounds like. fucking Moderate swing-state/rural/Midwestern/southern/"heartland"/working class white voter catnip. He sounds like he's also a very smart politician and strong campaigner. And he's apparently genuinely a good guy with a good record, too.
He sounds like he's going to do a really good job of appealing to voters in several of the big deal swing states without being from any of them specifically. Which means it doesn't feel like pandering to one of the states involved (and thereby spurning the others), which is also great.
(Also he was the one who started "weird" @ conservatives and I think we should take that seriously as a very good political instinct/move. Judging in large part by how it has so clearly hit an actual nerve with conservatives like so little else. Also hugely relevant: that post going around about how part of why conservatives are so upset about "weird" is because in the Midwest, "weird" specifically also implies anti-social or harmful behavior.)
Officially feeling more optimistic about Trump not winning in November

Namjoon
cw: subbish!Joon, guilt, idk why this got a lil angsty haha
He’d be the kind of guy to pull out instantly and then panic. “Baby, this is bad. This is really bad. You’re bleeding, oh god. What do we do?”
“I’m bleeding? But I don’t feel anything.”
You’d sit up to check and Namjoon would be a mess, gripping his own hair and staring at the blood soaked sheets in horror.
“I knew that this would happen one day. Stupid Namjoon, why can you be careful once? Everything I touch, I break. I tried so hard to be gentle with you. Stupid Namjoon, I’m so fucking rough.”
“Huh? Joonie, don’t say that. I think it’s just my period.”
“Your period?”
“Yeah”, you’d touch your own folds, “yeah, that’s my period. It feels like it. Kinda gross, isn’t it?”
Namjoon would shake his head instantly.
“It’s not gross. You’re not gross. Nothing about you’s gross”, he’d assure you with kisses to your neck and shoulders.
“And you’re not stupid or rough”, you’d whisper with scratches to his scalp, “slip it in like this, Joonbug. Me sitting by the edge and you standing up. Wanna have my big boy all inside me as I hug him close.”
“I want to, I got soft though. Sorry, I panicked.”
“That’s okay. Look at me.”
Namjoon would gaze down at you, sighing dreamily as you slid his softened cock back inside.
“Let’s look at each other till you’re hard again.”
Namjoon would shudder and grip you as gently as possible.
“It, it won’t take long”, he’d promise you breathily.
“Good, that’s good. My handsome Joonie. You treat me so gently.”
“Baby…holy fuck…ahm…”
Seokjin
He’d be so mature about it, but in a funny way because he knows that you are really embarrassed about it. Some people in your past were assholes about it, which made you insecure about the entire deal. So when it’d happen, he would be mature about it. You’d be on top, riding him with your head rolled back in bliss. One of his hands would be on your tits, playing with them, the other would be on your hip with his thumb on your clit, rolling slow circles. He wouldn’t notice it at first until hot, wet slick started to smear all over his thighs and crotch. So he’d lift you for a moment, looking up at you instantly to check if you had noticed. You wouldn’t because he’d have gotten you so far gone in bliss.
“Are you hurting, darling?” he would still check up on you just in case it isn’t your period.
“No, feels good…so good…”
“That’s good to hear. You feel so good too.”
“Oh god, Jinnie…”
He’d make you cum first and then would catch you as you fled into his arms with giggles.
“Do you feel good? My darling, do you feel good?” he’d check up on you as his hips thrust up into your tightened heat. Honest confession, he’d be really into period sex because you get so wet and fucking warm and his cock would just LOVE to be inside you when you’re like this. So he’d definitely keep going after your orgasm ‘cause he’s pussy drunk for you.
“Yes”, you’d whimper and grip his hair, “please don’t stop.”
The confession would happen during aftercare, once he made you cum too many times to count. He’d make sure you’d be giggly and happy and only then he’d drop it.
“I want you to know that there is nothing about you which would ever gross me out.”
“No? Not even my nuclear stink farts?”
Seokjin would laugh with you.
“Okay maybe those, yeah.”
And you would laugh even harder and he’d be assured that it wouldn’t trigger you anymore.
“I’m just telling you because I noticed that you started your period.”
“I did?” you’d gasp and tense up just a little.
“It’s no big deal, we can wash it off.”
And he would be nervous for a moment until you relaxed again and chuckled.
“Oh god, no wonder it felt so slippery.”
“Mhm, yeah. It’s so hot. You were so wet.”
Yoongi
Based on Suchwita and him confessing that he passes out when seeing blood, I feel like he’d be a mess lmaoo. If he knows that your period is coming or that it is already there and you fuck, he doesn’t get squeamish around the sight because he knows that it’s not technically blood blood. But if it comes as a surprise and he thinks that he hurt you to the point of bleeding? Boy will probably drop next to you all passed out and with a fainting-victorian-lady level of whimper. It’s honestly a little funny to imagine him dropping all xOx with his boner all bloody and his thighs all messy. You’d be the one having to keep him company until he wakes again. Once he does finally wake up, he’d instantly want to apologise (with tears and on his knees) but you’d stop him with a fond “it’s just my period, you little baby”, followed by a kiss and a chuckled, “how are you? I lost you for a moment.”
“Not gonna lie, I’m a little traumatised. I thought that I’d hurt you.”
“Nope. You just fucked me so good, you fucked my period outta me.”
At that Yoongi’s cheeks would flush blood red and he’d stutter and mutter his words.
“Don’t say, say that oh my, my god.”
To which you’d giggle and smooch him, “you’re such a cutie, Yoongi love. Let’s hop in the show and get clean, yeah?”
“Yeah, uh, fuck sorry for passing out. That was embarrassing.”
“It’s fine. I know you’re a big baby.”
“Hey! Not cool”, he’d whine with a pout, pouting harder when you tried to kiss it away just so you would try again.
Hoseok
cw: fingering
It would happen during foreplay. You’d be making out, he’d have two of his long fingers buried inside you and you’d pump his cock slowly. Tension would be at its breaking point, you’d both wanted the other abysmally. And so you gave in. Hoseok’s slickened fingers would grip the pillow.
“Wait!”
Too late, the mess was already on the fabric. You’d both be staring at the red spot, then ogle your middle.
“I, uh…” you’d begin, feeling nervous and a little insecure. Hoseok is a lovely, wonderful boyfriend but it’s still a little embarrassing to randomly start your period in the middle of something as sexy as intercourse.
“I mean, the mess is already made. What bad is gonna do a little more?” he would instantly assure you because he’d sense your discomfort. He is honest. It happened before that you started your period during sex and he doesn’t think it gross. He’d actually be really excited about it because you are so much warmer and wetter when you’re on your period. You are also a lot more sensitive, which finally explains why he accidentally made you cum during foreplay.
“Are you serious?” you’d gasp, but with an excited tingle in your stomach.
“Very. I won’t let a little blood stop me. Are you down too?”
“Yeah, uh, holy fuck Hobi. Yeah I am.”
“That’s my girl. Now spread those sexy legs of yours and let me fuck it out of you.”
You would follow instantly and seconds later he would slip his engorged cock into your dripping cunt while his fingers slipped to your clit and your name left him through gritted teeth.
“So fucking wet. Gotta fucking love your pussy, fuck baby…”
Jimin
He’d be such a worried bean. It would happen during the soft, romantic kind of sex. You and he had been tangled up in missionary for a while. Body heats were raised, lips puffy from kissing and breaths sped up. He would have to break away for a moment to give his arms some rest. His hand would slip down to your middle to rub your clit, his eyes following his touch. “Baby, you’re bleeding!” his exclaim would be instant, his worry obvious in his voice, “holy shit, are you okay? Did I hurt you?”
You would sit up as best as possible to check it out yourself. You wouldn’t be in pain, so hearing his words would be confusing to you at first until you’d see his blood coated cock and your messy thighs.
“No, I uh, I guess I started my period. Fuck, this is embarrassing.”
At that Jimin would instantly jump into caring mode. He’d cup your face and kiss your lips as he’d whisper sweet words of encouragement.
“Don’t be embarrassed. You’re so beautiful, my sweetheart. You’re not in pain, right?”
“No. No pain at all”, you’d sigh and grasp his hair because his hips would roll into you slowly and gently to distract you and get both of you back into the mood. His skilled hips wouldn’t be able to stay still now that he knew that the mess was natural and not made because of him being too rough.
“No pain?”
“No…pain…”
Jimin, who would feel you clench and tighten around him and who would taste every single one of your sighs, would lie you down gently again and slide his thumb back to your clit to rub her.
“Does this feel good to you?”
“Yes Mimi…so good…”
Taehyung
cw: Dom!Tae, loving degradation ("my slut")
He wouldn’t say anything about it because he would have already had a gist. You get a certain way when your period is close, so he would have picked up on the signs. It would still come as a surprise because there would be far more blood than he imagined there to be. You’d be on your side with one leg bend around his waist as he fucked into you. He’d be kneeling, your thigh under him and between his own meaty thighs. His hips would be colliding with your ass with each deep, passionate thrust, his big hands would claim your soft body in strong grips and tender touches. You’d be moaning so much, shaking in his hold as he’d fuck the period horny out of you (you’d have been moody yet horny all day until he finally decided enough is enough and took care of it). One moment his cock would be glistening in your pleasure, the next it’s a deep red. The red would begin gushing out of you instantly, spreading all over his crotch and your ass and Taehyung would smirk, admiring it with blown out pupils and a throbbing cock. He fucked you good enough that your body finally gave up. That’s the kind of remedy he wanted to be for you.
“Am I fucking you good, mhm? Is my little slut finally satisfied?”
“Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!”
“Of course you are. That’s my pretty slut. Keep moaning for me. You’re such a good girl”, he’d growl and pound into you harder, gritting his teeth as you wailed for him in pure ecstasy.
He wouldn’t mention it until after he drew multiple orgasms out of you and you’d be dripping in his seed. You’d be all cuddled and snuggled up and he’d kiss your face thoroughly with his strong arms around you.
“You started your period, by the way.”
“I did what?!”
“Mhm, don’t worry about it.”
“Oh god, this is so bad, I-”
“I said; don’t worry about it. I had a gist, I laid out a towel. Nothing’s gonna get dirty.”
“You had a gist?”
“Mhm, you get a certain way.”
“I do?”
“Mhm, you get cranky but horny. I know I can make you happy again with a good dicking down. Kinda wanted it to happen, which is why I fucked you like a slut.”
“You’re actually so annoying sometimes, oh my god”, you’d whine, making him chuckle and kiss your lips.
“Mhm, love you too.”
Jungkook
cw: Dom!Kook, strength kink
Another candidate for worried bean, but he would try to be polite about it. The sex you and he would be having would be a little rough. You’d be on all fours, drooling all over the sheets as he’d rearrange your insides with skilled thrusts. He wouldn’t notice it at first, too preoccupied with having his head thrown back and moaning with closed eyes as your puffy cunt was milking him oh so good. His big hands would be gripping you, leaving marks and tender spots. It would honestly be so passionate and hot. Then he’d start feeling it. You’d get wetter and wetter and wetter. He’d just have to see for himself. He’d be cocky at first until he’d see the bloody mess all over his cock and thighs. Even your ass would be covered in it. He’d stop instantly, which would earn him your fingers gripping his hips in an attempt to get him to move.
“Don’t stop please, please.”
“Baby, I wanna tell you something.”
“What?” You’d move your head just enough that you could gawk at him, “now??”
“It’s really important. You should really know.”
“What is it?” you’d sound out of breath and a little annoyed.
“I think you, uhm, started your period.”
“Really?” you’d tense up, move and squirm in an obviously embarrassed way. And Jungkook would instantly feel bad because he didn’t want to embarrass you. So he’d lie his muscular body over yours and kiss your neck and shoulders, intertwining his hands with yours so he could pin them into the sheets.
“That’s not gonna stop us, right?” he’d rasp, feeling you clench around him.
“You’re not grossed out?”
“Not in the slightest. You’re still comfortable, yeah? Nothing hurts?””
“No…just want you to move please.”
“Everything my babygirl wants. Mhm, I’m so lucky, I’ve got the prettiest girl in the world.”

"You Weren't Loyal To Me": How Crosshair's Brothers Absolutely Failed Him in "The Bad Batch" Season 1
I know I'm not the first person to make these arguments, but after recently rewatching "The Bad Batch" Season 1, I feel compelled to play Devil's Advocate and assert that Crosshair's brothers absolutely failed him in Season 1.
Now, don't mistake me. I don't believe Crosshair was 100% in the right. Once he regained his free will -- whether he actually removed his inhibitor chip, or whether his injury on Bracca deactivated it or lessened its impacts -- he definitely should've left the Empire the first chance he had.
I imagine he was trying to make the best of a bad situation, but I don't see why he would stay with an organization hijacked his mind and ordered him to kill his family, civilians and other people who were trying to do the right thing.
But, I don't think his brothers -- I'm excluding Omega because she's a child and was following everyone else's lead -- are 100% in the right either.
I believe Crosshair's brothers basically abandoned him.
CROSSHAIR'S GREAT INSECURITY?
Now, I understand that they didn't initially plan to abandon Crosshair. But, once they knew he was being mind-controlled and especially once they knew how to undo its effects, they never even considered going back for him.
We never see them debate trying to save Crosshair. They don't discuss whether it's feasible, whether it's worth the risk, how they would even attempt it, etc.
I think this was a much-needed moment that we never get to see. In fact, as others have pointed out, we don't really get much discussion about Crosshair at all.
He's their brother. He's been by their side from infancy through their time as cadets through dozens of missions. Why aren't they more upset about him turning against them? Or being mind-controlled by the Empire?
They seem so blasé about it. Like it's more of an inconvenience than a tragedy, especially by 1.12 "Rescue on Ryloth." Like "Ope, Crosshair's here. I bet he's gonna try to kill us again."
As I'll discuss more later, Hunter gets captured on Daro, and Omega loses her frickin' mind. Even Echo, Wrecker and Tech seemed distressed too, even if the show didn't focus on their reactions as much.
But, Crosshair's mind and body get hijacked by the Empire, and nobody seems to give a shit.
No wonder why Crosshair felt so betrayed and said everything he does in 1.15 and 1.16. It probably confirmed something he always felt, or always feared:
That he was the odd man out in his squad -- the last to be included and the first to be excluded.
That they never cared about him as much as he cared about them.
Based on experiences in my own life, with friends and coworkers, I do wonder if Crosshair was always insecure about his standing within the group. This makes sense given that he's likely the youngest of the four original brothers, and that as a sniper, he isn't always in the middle of the action like they are. His personality doesn't really help either, but his brothers seem to be able to navigate it just fine in their "The Clone Wars" Season 7 arc.
Maybe this is partly why he seemed OK with Echo joining the squad at the end of TCW arc: because he felt like Echo would become the new 'odd man' considering that he didn't grow up with the Bad Batch and wouldn't know Crosshair's brothers like he does.
It's been a while since I watched TCW Season 7, so maybe I'm wrong.
But, I definitely think this is partly why he resents Omega so much in Season 1:
The Bad Batch -- mainly Hunter -- decided to risk their lives and their freedom to go back to Kamino for Omega. She might've been their "little sister," but they'd known her all of one day and Hunter still decided it was worth going back for her.
Yet they never went back for him.
Hell, as far as we the audience know, they never even considered it.
I'm not saying it would have been easy or risk-free. They also now have Omega in their care, and trying to extract Crosshair from Imperial custody while all parties involved would be trying to kill or capture them isn't an easy undertaking.
But, as I'll talk about more later, these guys do rescue and extraction missions all the time. They put their lives on the line for complete strangers several times in Season 1 to save them from Imperial custody, slavery, etc.
And I'm not saying they were wrong to do those things. It was objectively good that the Bad Batch saved the people they did.
But, I can absolutely understand why Crosshair would be infuriated that his brothers take on all these missions to help complete strangers but never bother to help him...
ANALYZING THE BATCH'S DECISIONS BASED ON THE SEASON 1 TIMELINE
I understand that, before he confronts them in the hangar in 1.01 "Aftermath," that they were planning to go back for him. And that they were forced to leave him behind because he was literally gunning for them. And -- as far as his brothers knew -- he was doing it of his own free will.
However, in 1.02 "Cut and Run," Omega tells them about the inhibitor chips, implying that that's how Crosshair is being controlled.
Then in 1.03 "The Replacements," we see that Tech is building a device to locate their inhibitor chips, and Omega tries to tell the Batch and specifically emphasizes to Hunter that Crosshair has no control over his actions. Hunter admits that he's angry at himself for leaving Crosshair behind, and Omega reassures him that they'll get him back someday.
So, it seems like -- at least in Omega's eyes -- the Batch was planning to save Crosshair at some point. And, Hunter at minimum feels guilty for leaving Crosshair on Kamino, even though they didn't really have much of a choice at the time.
However, the Batch gets sidetracked in 1.04 and 1.05. First, they need supplies; then bounty hunters are after Omega; then they need intel on who's after her and why.
Then, by the events of 1.07 "Battle Scars," we see that they've fallen into a routine of doing jobs for Cid. It's safe to assume they've done -- or at least attempted -- a dozen jobs for her at this point, based on Wrecker and Omega's 20 orders of Mantell Mix.
And then Rex shows up and tells them point-blank that the clones can't fight the inhibitor chip's effects, re-emphasizing Omega's earlier point that Crosshair had no control over his actions.
The Batch then experiences this firsthand with Wrecker, whose chip activates before they can extract it. We see that, even with Wrecker fighting the chip's effects with all his might, he endangers his brothers and was *this* close to killing Omega, before Rex stunned him.
Now, we have confirmation based on both Rex and Wrecker's experiences that removing an active chip restores a clone's free will.
Thus, by the end of 1.07 "Battle Scars," the Batch definitively knows:
Crosshair is being controlled by an inhibitor chip and is being forced to do the Empire's bidding;
How to remove an inhibitor chip; and
That removing a clone's active inhibitor chip will restore his free will
And yet, despite all this knowledge, the only effort they make to save Crosshair is to tell him about the inhibitor chip.
They don't attempt or even discuss possibly stunning him on the artillery deck and taking him with them.
But, admittedly, this isn't the best time to attempt a rescue, as they're outnumbered and essentially trapped aboard the Jedi Cruiser. And then Omega gets captured by Cad Bane and Hunter gets shot, and the others are desperately trying to get off Bracca before Crosshair & co. shoot them down. Fine. Getting off Bracca safely and then trying to find Omega should be their priority.
But, once they recover Omega on Bora Vio, and their lives aren't in immediate danger anymore... this would've been the perfect time to at least debate going back for Crosshair.
Again, they have all the information needed at this point.
As for how they find him, well, I'm sure they could get the information somehow. Or they could just cause a stir somewhere so he'd show up to arrest them again, like he did on Bracca.
But, no, they just continue doing jobs for Cid in 1.10-1.13. They don't bring him up at all until they see him on Ryloth in 1.12 "Rescue on Ryloth," and again, the tone is like, "Well, Crosshair is here. That's annoying."
If not being able to locate him was the only reason they didn't try to save him after 1.08/1.09, that argument doesn't apply to 1.12 "Rescue on Ryloth." He's there. They know he's there. They're already there doing an extraction job anyway... why don't they just grab him too???
Yes, there would be additional risks, but YOUR BROTHER HAS BEEN KIDNAPPED BY THE EMPIRE AND FORCED TO DO ITS BIDDING, AND YOU DON'T SEEM TO GIVE A SHIT!!!
Which brings us nicely to:
THE DOUBLE STANDARD
Throughout Season 1, but especially in the latter half, we see The Batch putting themselves in harm's way for complete strangers, or at most, friends-of-friends.
They rescue Muchi the Rancor and other people from enslavers; they extract the former Separatist Senator from Raxus; they extract the Syndullas from Ryloth; they break Gregor out of the Imperial base on Daro.
In the latter three cases, the Batch went to Imperial-occupied planets and an Imperial base, despite all the risks involved. And, especially when they saved Gregor, they had very little information going in and basically just winged the entire thing.
It just feels like, when you look at all these cases, any argument the Batch could make for not saving Crosshair just falls apart.
"We didn't know where he was." He was on Ryloth -- grab him then.
"We didn't have enough information." You didn't on Daro, and you still snuck into a heavily fortified Imperial base to rescue Gregor.
"Everyone there would've been trying to kill us." You literally extract/rescue people from Imperial forces for a living...
"It would've endangered Omega." Well, buddy, have I got a story for you...
You see, when Hunter falls on Daro and gets captured, the Batch still comes to his rescue despite knowing it's a trap AND THEY BRING OMEGA WITH THEM!!!
Every excuse they could've made for not saving Crosshair sooner is gone. The Batch will literally run into a trap for Hunter, and they constantly throw themselves into danger to save Omega, but they never do the same for Crosshair.
It really feels like such a double standard.
They seem to care about everyone BUT him.
Plus, sadly, there's one more parallel I can draw. One more instance where the Bad Batch put themselves in harm's way to save a fellow clone who was being mind-controlled by their enemies in an attempt to kill them...
Echo.
Yes, remember all the way back in TCW Season 7, when we find out that Echo is the one behind the algorithm that's giving the Separatists an advantage in all these battles?
Even though Rex thought Echo was dead, the minute he suspects Echo's still alive, he goes after him. He even punches Crosshair over it, after Crosshair bullies Rex for leaving Echo for dead at the Citadel.
One of the "regs" went back for his brother despite knowing he was being mind-controlled by the enemy and forced to attack them.
Rex, Anakin and the Bad Batch save Echo from a terrible fate. They extract him from the Separatists, restore his free will and essentially give him his life back.
Yet, when the exact same thing happens to one of their own, the Batch don't even consider going back for Crosshair the way Rex went back for Echo -- hell, the way they went in for Echo too, even though they didn't know him!!
SOME CONSIDERATIONS
I will give the Batch this: once Crosshair confronts them on Kamino and Hunter stuns him, Hunter decides not to leave Crosshair behind this time. And that was even after Crosshair refused to say when he had his chip removed. So, for all they know, he might've been acting of his own free will when he tried to kill them on Bracca.
While taking Crosshair with them at the end of 1.15 was a step in the right direction, I don't think it was enough to make up for everything they failed to do.
And, while he doesn't specify exactly what, Hunter later admits to Crosshair in 3.05 "The Return" that he has regrets too. And considering the context and the timeframe they're talking about, it's possible Hunter regrets not going back for Crosshair sooner/at all, among other mistakes he's made. (Story for another time.)
I'll also give some consideration to Wrecker, who was the only one of the brothers who said he actively missed Crosshair in 1.03 "The Replacements." Tech mentions Crosshair very flippantly a few times, and Echo doesn't really mention him at all.
(EDIT: Looking back now, Echo *not* talking about Crosshair is such a weird choice. Shouldn’t he of all people know what it’s like to be mind-controlled? To be weaponized by your enemy and forced to kill your loved ones?)
(ANOTHER EDIT: I was rewatching 1.14 “War-Mantle” today and this line stood out to me:
Echo: If there’s a chance that trooper is being held against his will, we have to try to get him out.
I realize that being imprisoned is different than being mind-controlled and actively hunting down you down, but it’s still weird that Echo of all people doesn’t seem to give a flying eff about Crosshair’s situation while practically begging Hunter to rescue a clone they’ve never met.🧐)
Obviously, we'll never know for certain, but I do wonder how Crosshair would've reacted if his brothers had rescued him and removed his chip at some point. Would he have stayed with them? Would he have wanted to rejoin the Empire voluntarily?
Considering he (supposedly) had his chip removed and still stayed with the Empire willingly in-universe, it's possible he might've wanted to do the same thing in an AU where his brothers rescued him.
He definitely despised that they were fugitives and "scavenging like rats," while he had authority, respect and purpose as a soldier of the Empire.
But, I think a large component -- although not the only one -- of why he stays with the Empire is that he felt like his brothers abandoned him. He brings this up several times in 1.15 and 1.16, and the way he does indicates this is a major sore spot for him.
We see in 1.01 "Aftermath" that the chip enhancement procedure is painful. He scrunches his face, flexes his hand and squirms around in the chamber. Plus, the machine itself looks similar to the Mind Flayer from other "Star Wars" properties.
Crosshair was literally being tortured by the Empire. Maybe he doesn't recall that once the procedure's done, but we see him getting his chip enhanced in both 1.01 and 1.03, and it's possible it was enhanced even more times off-screen.
I cannot stress this enough: the Empire basically took Crosshair prisoner, tortured him and hijacked his free will.
And his brothers essentially did nothing to save him.
It would be one thing if his brothers were civilians like you and me, and didn't know the first thing about how to infiltrate an Imperial compound or how to navigate a firefight despite being outnumbered.
But, that doesn't apply to The Bad Batch. That's literally their bread-and-butter.
And Crosshair -- especially once he seems to regain his free will between the Bracca and Ryloth arcs -- watched his brothers risk their lives to save complete strangers while doing nothing for him.
I would've been livid too.
Not to sound like Tech, but while I don't agree with Crosshair's decision, I can understand why he decided to stay on Kamino rather than go with them at the end of 1.16. His brothers offered him no real comfort and no real apology, and I think he desperately wanted to hear that, especially from Hunter.
I know after everything that's happened -- especially Crosshair refusing to say when he had his chip removed -- that it would've been hard to admit their mistakes. But, Crosshair wanted to hear something beyond: "You can come with us if you want. And if you don't, we don't have to be enemies."
The closest thing to comfort any of them offer is Omega affirming that, despite everything, she still cared about him. This seems to be the only thing that really effects him, that causes him to doubt his decision, that causes him to show any kind of emotion beyond anger.
I legitimately believe that if someone had talked to Crosshair one-on-one for like five minutes, and really showed how much they still cared about him and always did, that he would've rejoined them.
Granted, it's really hard to tell.
Crosshair has, as Tech said, always been severe and unyielding. Plus, he really suffers from this "in for a penny, in for a pound" kind of mindset, which is partly why he stays with the Empire for so long even after regaining his free will.
But the fact that all his brothers leave him on Kamino again so effortlessly, so easily is just tragic. No final goodbye. No hug. No nothing.
For all any of them know, this could be the last time they ever see each other. (And, for Tech and Crosshair, it was.)
I know it wouldn't have been easy after everything that's happened, but for crying out loud, I just wanted them to try.
And I imagine Crosshair did too.
IN CONCLUSION
Honestly, I think the TBB writers and producers purposely never gave us a scene of The Batch debating whether to go after Crosshair, or a scene of them outlining to us the audience why it wasn't possible even though they wanted to.
I think the creative team wanted us to sympathize with Crosshair when he says "You weren't loyal to me," while also arguably giving our protagonists a weakness to overcome later.
This really seems like the case if we look at Season 2.
Once the Batch finds out Crosshair's being detained by the Empire's Advanced Science Division in 2.14 "Tipping Point," they immediately start discussing whether and why they should try to save him, even after everything that happened between them in S1.
On top of that, this time they actually decide to do whatever it takes to get him back, despite limited intel and the imminent danger behind such an undertaking.
I think the Batch genuinely learned from their mistakes in Season 1 and, as Hunter maybe alludes to in 3.05 "The Return," regretted not going back for Crosshair sooner/at all after the Empire started controlling him.
I'll admit: I think when I first watched Season 1, I was basically in the Batch's corner. Crosshair was gunning for them at every opportunity, and Omega's well-being quickly became their priority (understandably so).
But, after rewatching Season 1 -- especially now that the show is over and we see how everyone's arcs play out -- it really hits me just how much Crosshair's brothers failed him in Season 1.
Again, I'm not saying Crosshair didn't make mistakes too. He definitely did.
But Crosshair's brothers failed him first.
AN ADDENDUM
(EDIT/UPDATE:) Since writing the above, I've stumbled across a few other posts of people making the counterargument, saying they believe Hunter was in the right and don't appreciate the hate he gets for not going back for Crosshair.
People are more than welcome to make that argument. I think that kind of debate just shows how nuanced this show and its characters are, because you can make valid arguments for both sides.
And to clarify, I don't hate Hunter (and the others) for not going back for Crosshair in S1. As Hunter says later in 3.05: "Nobody really understood what was happening back then." It was a chaotic time -- for the galaxy and their family.
In the span of one episode, the Jedi are exterminated; the war ends; the Republic is reorganized into the Empire; the clones' future role in the galaxy is questioned; and when CF99 refuse to kill civilians, they're declared traitors and arrested.
And to top it all off, Crosshair is acting strange AND they find out they have a little sister who's in danger.
So, when Crosshair seemingly betrays them, and they barely escape with their lives, it's understandable that the Batch's first move is just to get their bearings and figure out their next steps.
And, of course, all the dominoes fall from there.
So, while I definitely don't hate him and I understand why they don't go back for Crosshair initially, I am disappointed in Hunter.
If the writers wanted me to be on his side and understand that it was basically impossible to go back for Crosshair, then I needed a scene showing/telling me why they can't. Or I at least needed a scene proving that they care about him, because based on what we actually got in Season 1, I tend to fall on Crosshair's side when he argues his brothers didn't care about him the way they clearly care about Hunter when he's captured.
You can certainly make arguments that, because Crosshair's their brother and he knows all their strategies, strengths, weaknesses, etc., that he's even more dangerous than all the other Imperials they might face. Yes, definitely. I argue that's all the more reason to try to save him.
Yes, there would be risks. But, if you succeed, not only do you lose a very dangerous enemy -- one who knows you inside and out -- but you would (hopefully) regain a teammate.
Imagine you're in Hunter's shoes and your sibling -- or if you don't have one, a really good friend who feels like a sibling -- gets taken captive and mind-controlled by an evil organization. Wouldn't you try your damnedest to get them out? Or at the very least, wouldn't you be sad about their situation?
Rewatching 1.03 "The Replacements," there's an interesting scene that's probably the closest we get to a real discussion about Crosshair -- how they feel about him, whether they miss him, whether he really betrayed them or was being influenced by the chip.
@laughhardrunfastbekindsblog did a great analysis of each character's reaction, which I recommend you read at some point.
I want to take a quick look at it too, starting with the brothers looking at Omega with Crosshair's weapon kit like she just knocked over Grandma's urn or something.
It feels like, for the first time, they're starting to let themselves process what really happened. This is their first real chance to mourn losing their brother.
Tech wonders whether Crosshair's actions were influenced by his inhibitor chip, and Omega basically confirms that theory. Wrecker is excited by the possibility that Crosshair didn't willingly betray them, but Hunter very quickly shuts the conversation down, saying they have other problems to tackle first.
While he's not technically wrong, Hunter pulls out the "raincheck card” too frequently in Season 1. And subsequently, a lot of the topics that come up in conversations keep simmering in the background while the Batch does other things until they're FORCED to confront them.
This scene is the perfect example of that. The Batch didn't mention Crosshair except in passing in 1.02, and it's only when Omega finds his weapon kit that they are FORCED to talk about him. (EDIT: Check out the 3:45 mark of this video on 2.09 “The Crossing” for more examples.)
I get the sense that Hunter's reaction in this scene, plus all the distractions that come up later, is why the others never really bring up Crosshair again, except in passing. It's a sore subject for Hunter, and they all tend to take their cues from him, especially this early in the show. Plus, they're probably still processing their own feelings, so they might not be ready to bring up the topic.
One last thing from 1.03 I want to note is that, later in the episode, Hunter is telling Omega about his and his brothers' enhanced abilities, and he automatically excludes Crosshair from the list.
It really feels like Hunter -- and the rest of the squad by extension -- labeled Crosshair as a lost cause very early on. That it was a given that he was their enemy now and there was no real chance of getting him back (unless he came to his senses on his own like Howzer and other clones later do).
This might be why they're so shocked when he reveals he removed his chip, because they were hoping that once he "woke up" that he would come back to them. Wrecker even says as much to Crosshair in 1.16: "We still would've taken ya."
Ultimately, I think the characters had differing perspectives on who had the responsibility in the situation.
It seems Hunter and the others took a very passive approach. They told Crosshair about the chip when they had the chance, hoped he would "wake up" on his own, and would've accepted him back if he had.
But, Crosshair feels they should've taken a more active approach. He's hurt that they never came back for him, whether to save him or to join him.
(EDIT #2: I realize that by 1.15, at least, Crosshair seems to be arguing that they should’ve come back to join him in the Empire. He might be making that argument, but I’m saying his brothers had a responsibility to try to save him, and in that regard, I believe they failed.)
This is essentially the exchange Hunter and Crosshair have in 1.15:
Crosshair: They don't leave their own behind, most of the time. Hunter: You tried to kill us. We didn't have a choice. Crosshair: Hmm. And I did?
And, as I said before, based on everything we saw in Season 1, I tend to side with Crosshair.
Hunter made mistakes -- never talking about Crosshair and shutting down the others when they did was a big one. He never addressed the elephant in the room until he HAD to, and by then it was basically too late. And, of course, it seems the others took their cues from him.
As the leader, it was his job to -- at some point when they weren't in immediate danger -- introduce the topic and ask the others for their thoughts about Crosshair, especially once they knew how powerful the chip's influence was and once they knew how to remove it.
But, he didn't.
If the writers wanted me to side with Hunter when he says "We didn't have a choice" -- especially given the double standard I discussed earlier -- I don't think they gave me good enough reason to.
However, I think that's ultimately why the writers did what they did.
Both Hunter and Crosshair made enough mistakes in Season 1 that you can argue all day about which one of them failed the other more, which makes the show and characters all the stronger for it. Because neither one is 100% in the right or 100% in the wrong.
I just wanted to play Devil's Advocate, and try to explain why Crosshair felt like he did, and why I believe he was (at least partly) justified.
So, feel free to continue debating it, but I at least believe that Crosshair's brothers failed him first.

close to you— jmm 21
notes: 1.3k words, no warnings, all fluff (a little emotionally heavy though so i’m so sorry 😭😭)
a/n: hello lovely people!! this is the first piece of writing that i’m posting on tumblr, so please be nice 🥹🥹
anyway, this is just a mini birthday scene for pepe’s birthday, but his name isn't ever explicitly mentioned here, so you can read it with any driver in mind. enjoy, and thank you for being here!! ❤️❤️
extra: i'm a gracie fan, and very happy about close to you being released, so this is very loosely based on the themes of that song (+ the blue (also by gracie) and call it what you want to by taylor swift!)
✧ ‧˚₊ ❆ ‧ ₊ ⊹˚✧ ‧˚₊ ❆ ‧ ₊ ⊹˚✧ ‧˚₊ ❆ ‧ ₊ ⊹˚✧ ‧˚₊ ❆ ‧ ₊ ⊹˚ ✧ ‧˚₊ ❆ ‧ ₊
it’s a quiet monday night. he’s on the balcony, leaning against the railing as he stares out onto the city, hair slightly dishevelled, eyes tired.
he barely registers the soft click the door makes as you slide it to the left, causing a warm gust of air to blow into the air-conditioned hotel room as you peek at him from behind the door.
“hi,” you greet softly, voice barely above a whisper.
his response is instant, head snapping towards you at the sound of your voice, as he croaks out a simple “hi” in return.
he nods once, inviting you to join him. his eyes track your every move, watching as you hesitate a little before making your way towards him.
there’s a brief moment of silence as you take in the view, noticing how the circuit seems to light up brighter than any other part of the city, a brief reminder of what’s bound the two of you together. the air is laced with the distinct scent of smoke, and the view polluted by the street lights scattered across the area.
“P5. that’s not too bad,” you say, referencing his race from the day before.
he hums in response, his expression blank and unreadable, seemingly nonchalant.
you chew on the inside of your mouth, unsure how to perceive his lack of reaction. maybe he’s just not in the mood to talk right now, you think, still staring at him a little awkwardly and expectantly.
the silence stretches on, and you start again, “i think P5 is good, actually. considering your previous races and the fact that you started from the back of the grid and everything-”
catching yourself from rambling on, you bite on your tongue to stay silent as you wait for a reply.
he turns to look at you, tilting his head ever-so-slightly, and you notice a small smile playing on his lips. his eyes study your face for a few seconds, and you feel your face get hot before you break eye contact to stare off into the distance instead.
there’s still some space between the two of you, and you try to convince yourself that you haven’t embarrassed yourself by talking too much, but you’re still feeling a little too shy to meet his eyes, and trying your hardest not to accidentally look at him.
the silence lingers for a second too long before you hear his feet shuffling across the wood floor as he moves closer to you.
he looks at you again, before he says, voice low and soft, “i’ll take it, i guess. i’m not proud of it, because it’s not the best, and i definitely think the team deserves better than that, but it’s a major improvement from the previous weekends, so i’m not upset.”
“i’m proud of you,” you offer, turning back to look at him. “i’ll be proud of you regardless of your results, and i’ll always be rooting for you.”
there’s a flicker of emotion in his eyes, gone too soon before it can be identified. you naturally assume that he probably doesn’t know what to say, and you don’t push him to.
when he reaches out to tuck a fallen strand of hair behind your ear, you inhale deeply, tensing up as you realise just how close he is, with the two of you pressed up against each other, closer than you should be.
there’s another pause.
this one’s shorter— a quick moment of contemplation before you decide to lean in towards him, bravely resting your head on his shoulder (or as close as you can get to it, anyway, considering the height difference.)
you’re a little stiff, unsure if the act of intimacy is as welcome as you had originally perceived it to be.
but then there’s yet another short pause, and his arm stretches out, wrapping around your waist before pulling you even closer into him.
you feel his shoulders rise with each breath he takes, and you send out a quick prayer to the universe, thanking whoever for allowing you this moment of intimacy, for allowing you to bask in the warmth of each other, before pepe breaks the silence.
“will you be there for my race on sunday?” he asks, voice coming out a little hoarse.
you lift your head from his shoulder to look at him, nodding, brows slightly furrowed. “i’m always there though. we just work in different sections.”
you’re suddenly very aware of the dark circles under his eyes, and the brief thought that he might not get enough sleep before his media duties tomorrow worries you a little, but you choose to stay in the moment, enjoying the privilege of being this close to him in a non-professional context, and in the privacy of your own space.
he shakes his head, voice softening a little, “i meant like– visiting me. in my garage, before the race.” he sounds a little hesitant and unsure of himself, even as he looks at you with hopeful eyes.
“i could… if you want me to.”
he blinks a few times in confusion before nodding his head and letting out a breathy, “yeah, of course”. (because of course he wants you to be there. he always wants you to be there before his races.)
he thinks that he would like to have moments like this more often— away from the flashing lights and fast cars that take up so much space in his life. he thinks he would like to have more moments like this with you. it’s astounding, the effect that you’ve had on him within the six months that you’ve known each other.
“i’ll be there,” you promise, your toned hushed and earnest, as though you’re pledging an oath.
he nods again in acknowledgement, but he seems a little distracted and dazed, and he’s staring at you again. your breath hitches slightly, but you make no move to hide yourself this time, allowing yourself to look into the eyes of the boy standing in front of you.
the air is thick with unaddressed feelings and things left unsaid, but neither of you make any attempt to change that. the moment stretches on, and when you finally look away, a clock on the face of another hotel near you lets you know that it’s close to midnight.
“we should go to bed,” you say. more for your sake than his, if you’re being honest.
“you can go in first. i’ll join you in a few minutes.”
you make no move to leave. his hand is still on your waist, but his grip has loosened a little, allowing you the freedom to go. you let your eyes roam over him, taking in his wind-tousled hair, his soft lips, and the way he’s looking at you with a certain intensity that has you dizzy with anticipation.
something within you shifts, and you feel your chest fill with something you can’t quite identify.
giving him a small smile, you look back to glance at the clock again.
“before i go…” you place a hand on his arm, steadying yourself.
“hm?”
“happy birthday sweetheart,” you whisper, as you tiptoe to give him a kiss on the cheek.
when you pull away, you find him smiling at you again, but it’s different this time. his eyebrows are a little raised, mouth slightly open, cheeks lightly tinged with a blush, and he looks flustered, one hand reaching up to rub his face as he stares at you.
and for what it’s worth, you’d love to continue staring at him. but it’s late, and you’re a little too shy to look at him after what you’ve just done— so instead, you quickly turn away, hurrying back into your room, leaving him gaping behind you in awe.

☎️ - The Unneeded But Happily Researched Crumbs Of Everything We Know About The Commissioner
“If anything happens… I’ll deny I ever knew you.”
The Commissioner is, as we all know, a mystery, and I hope it stays that way, but I put it upon myself to wrangle every little tidbit of information we have on him outside of giving cases! I do this solely because of three things:
I have nothing better to do
I find myself strangely endeared to his character (i.e. I do a gay little "favorite character" clap every time I hear him mentioned)
I want to share all my random knowledge with you all because I go digging for it in every S&M media there is
I'll be dividing this up into 4 sections for ease of access: comics lore, games lore (HtR, Telltale, TTIV), cartoon lore, and misc. lore. Some things MAY be assumptions based on other characters' reactions to what he MIGHT be saying or say about him, sure, but I will source all information on where to find it & provide images when they can be easily provided!~ If anything new comes up or I have forgotten something, I'll update. Until then... hope you love both hyperlinks and "at least I laughed at it" style commentary! ☎️
Comics Lore
The introduction of The Commissioner, as with everyone else! Small tidbits of his quite understated character outside of being The Phone are here, obviously, including:
the Commissioner's one and only speech bubble! (Bad Day on The Moon)
the beginnings of the implied "I love you" statements towards Sam & Max with an "XOXO" on a postcard (Bad Day on The Moon)
he shows SOME disdain towards Sam & Max's attitudes towards achieving their goals, being the one specifically to tell them to go on a road trip (On the Road #1, "Prisoners of The Casbah")
Games Lore
Hit the Road
The Commissioner is barely a character in this game (big surprise, right?) and you do not get much information on him minus the bare minimum of "he is Sam & Max's boss," so there's not much to be said here. In fact, I don't know why I mentioned it. Great game, though, go play it! Now! I'll wait until you get back :)
Save The World
Welcome back! There're only minor silly tidbits here, but they're needed for this comprehensive list. Everything is worth mentioning about a character with nothing to his name but "The Commissioner." I mean, you're reading this post, right?
wears bifocals! 👓 ("The Mole, The Mob, and The Meatball")
was once in contact with & worked with Harry Moleman, as he sent him to be the mole for the Toy Mafia. Crossover of the century... I wonder if he knows how far poor Harry has fallen ("The Mole, The Mob, and The Meatball")
Takes Sam & Max out for dinner sometimes, apparently, if they do well enough on their cases! Squirrel Garden sounds disgusting, but I'd be jazzed too if they also had the free breadsticks ("The Mole, The Mob, and The Meatball")
likely just a quick jab, so I don't really know why I'm putting it here other than humor, but Max apparently doesn't trust him! I hope that gets solved; Commissioner is sorta signing his meager paychecks ("Bright Side of The Moon")
Beyond Time and Space
The middle child of the Telltale trilogy, this game has barely anything in terms of tidbits given that he really only assigns the beginning cases in 1 out of 5 episodes, and even then, that doesn't give a single thing away. Despite this, there's gotta be one or two tidbits we should learn, right? Sure!
is aware of Sam's insistence on answering the phone & seemingly asks straight up why he didn't answer (What's Up, Beelzebub?)
Can confirm an "I love you" towards Max... d'aww! (What's Up, Beelzebub?)
The Devil's Playhouse
The Commissioner barely shows up or is referenced in this game, mainly due to the story existing outside of the common framing of "assigning cases," but we learn two small yet revealing tidbits:
British Columbian! 🇨🇦 (The City That Dares Not Sleep)
Has provided books on cultural and racial sensitivity for Sam & Max because they kept "reducing people to obvious stereotypes." (The City That Dares Not Sleep)
This Time, It's Virtual!
The phone exists yet again... but in your VR HEADSET! Some fairly funny Commissioner lore in this one even if you, like almost everyone I've seen in this fandom, dislike or even hate this game:
His family is in hiding, and I'm assuming Witness Protection?! Must come with the territory (phone call after completing first three Freelance Training segments in-game)
Can confirm an "I love you" of some sort said to Sam ... d'aww! (phone call after completing first three Freelance Training segments in-game)
Signs off even official, legal wanted posters with "The Commissioner," asking people to seek the help of Freelance Police & associates himself as PART of the Freelance Police!
signs your certificate at the end of the game, which mentions the Illuminati in conjunction with his name for some reason! What kind of policing are we running here....??
Cartoon Lore
Truly, the 90s cartoon is where most Commissioner lore lies if we take into consideration all of these happen within the same universe, which we likely shouldn't. This being said, the cartoon provides us with the only picture we have of the guy (see post photo above the cut). Alongside this, we also get a LOT more information than any other media:
before we even start the information in the ACTUAL cartoon, Sam & Max say within the show's initial Bible believe he's out to kill them, in some way, saying they're the "troubled, ungrateful sons he never had." That's so sweet ... in a way. As well, there's a very small section dedicated to the Commissioner as a character, though not much is said that we don't already know (Sam & Max Cartoon Series Bible)
has Geek's number, or at least a number to the Sub-Basment of Solitude, as he calls it more than once over the course of the series, which makes me wonder how well he may or may not know Geek! Like a grandniece or something (episodes 1, "The Thing That Wouldn't Stop It" & 3b, "They Came from Down There")
cried over the story of Sam & Max having to get rid of John, their beloved alligator son... must be a shared parental instinct (episode 6a, "That Darn Gator")
apparently sends sticker books in case briefings on a semi-regular basis, as Sam comments that he "loves when the Commissioner does that" as if it has happened before - how whimsical! (episode 6b, "We Drop at Dawn")
confirms the Commissioner as a legitimate police commissioner alongside being Sam & Max's boss (episode 6b, "We Drop at Dawn")
seemingly very fussy if not given his private bathroom and honor bar. Fancy stuff, Commissioner, & he apparently allows Sam and Max up there! Or not, they just sorta bust in. Whatever! Sharing is caring (episode 6b, "We Drop at Dawn")
the Commissioner has a DAUGHTER! and somehow, Sam & Max got invited to her WEDDING! I think she's beautiful and I hope she doesn't resent her special day getting ruined (episode 11a, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang")
that iconic, signed, chest only photo given with the solemn, loving, promise of "If anything ever happens, I'll deny I ever knew you," followed by Max crying that it's "It's just... so him." - what a loving, tender and slightly bordering on oddly familial relationship he has with Sam and Max... stop, I'll start crying! (episode 13, "The Final Episode")
Misc. Lore
These are lore tidbits that are present in mediums either outside of the media itself, belong in a game that is not technically part of the larger S&M canon, or has to do with out of media context, but should be included anyway because why not!
gifts Sam & Max a new floaty pen from a different United State every Christmas ... but not really anything else! (Poker Night 2)
Sam & Max discuss the Commissioner's power in response to doubt about his existence, claiming "Don’t you know he’s everywhere? He knows we’re talking about him right now!" - which is sort of scary, but I'll let it slide because it implies that the Commissioner's surveillance is of a much higher caliber than we initially thought and that is BANGER (in-character interview for Telltale, found here on Steve Purcell's Sam & Max FB page)
He's affectionate yet surly & I'm sure all those "I love you" statements contribute to that! D'aww... (Skunkape Origin Video)
Voiced by a member of Bay Area Sound, Julian Kwasneski, in the Telltale trilogy! Talked about and even has a LINE recited in this specific developer commentary! We love a mysterious boss who sounds like an adult in Peanuts.
God bless the guy, he had a rash! Does this matter? No. Will it ever matter? Likely not, as it was from the sadly cancelled Sam & Max: Freelance Police trailer. Sighs. At this point, you can tell I'm just adding whatever mentions we get of the guy. Makes me giggle, though.
Conclusion...?
In the end, the Commissioner is a mystery, and always WILL be a mystery. Hell, I sort of never want to know as it will ruin every single thing I have worked so hard to archive, but it is fun to comb through the different canons! Of course, it is likely any of this can be tossed out or considered non-canon in the blink of an eye because Sam & Max always loves to give a middle finger to character details if they don't affect the main plot & likely a lot of these are mere gags. The Commissioner is phone, and always will be only phone. However, it's always in my best interest to try to find ANYTHING to push back the curtain even the tiniest inch, and I hope my efforts were worth it. Now, to sign off, just press that phone! You got it, you got it! ☎️
#sam and max#sam & max#freelance police#the commissioner (sam & max)#if you sincerely read all of this... thank you. my god. thank you

Warning: none, I think.
You muttered the lyrics written in your notebook while your fingers moved up and down in the air. Noah watched you from the corner of his eye as he pretended to be working on something.
"Is it... Uh... That's how it happened, right? He cheated"
You sighed and turned to look at him.
You had written the song with Noah, mostly based on your ideas and feelings that kept flowing after a few bad weeks. He simply offered a few changes, way to express certain things and how to make it more "singeable".
"Yes"
Noah nodded and mimicked you. Now, you both sat looking at each other.
"Sorry for using your band as therapy" You chuckled.
He laughed and shook his head. "Our pleasure"
You went quiet for a while, both a bit lost in your thoughts.
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Any of you liked him, Noah. What would have happened?"
"Yeah, I see your point" He chuckled.
You leaned your head against the chair and watched him. Noah was now looking at the desk.
"Are you sure about the song?"
"For now? It sounds amazing" You said. "Need to hear it from you, and the guys' green light."
Noah nodded. "You can just say no anytime. We won't release it if is too personal"
You grabbed his hand and run your thumb over his knuckles. "Thanks, Noah"
"No, thank you for giving us this lyrics."
"Hey, sorry. There was a lot of traffic." Nicky walked in with sweaty cheeks and his hair quite messy, but had some coffee.
"Nah, don't worry dude. You have to check this" Noah gave you a sweet smile and that's how you started producing the song.
A few days later, you sat with your eyes closed and headphones on, Noah sitting by you in the silent room. It was your first time listening to the song and there was something special on it. It took you a while to figure it out. But when you realized, your mouth opened and you turned to look at him. The other guys were outside having some drinks after a long day, so it was just the two of you.
Noah smirked and crossed his arms.
"It's me" You muttered.
You didn't think they would use it. You had sung the song once. It was recorded and everything, you had agreed. But this...
"Noah" you pushed the headphones back right when his voice came back.
"Listen. We can remove it. We actually have two versions. But if you like it and you agree, we want you to feature in the song."
You didn't know what to say.
"Maybe not like huge thing. But we want your name on it"
"My name is already on it"
"Bigger this time. YN, half of the album is also yours. Do you think we could do this without you?"
"Probably"
He rolled his eyes and grabbed your hand.
"I disagree. It's on you, YN. Feel free"
You considered it for a few seconds. Your voice was there, doing some chorus and melodies. It wasn't a big thing.
"Don't make it too big"
"Promised" You linked your pinkies and smiled sweetly at each other, that warm love between you two obviously showing. Maybe not enough because any of you seemed to notice.
A few minutes later, Noah walked you to the kitchen, where he passed you your drink of choice and lifted his.
"To YN, who finally sings one of our songs."
"To YN!"
Months passed and the song had been released a while ago. It had been a good one, the fans liked it and it sounded good on live.
"YN"
You turned to see Folio by the door.
"Mhm"
"Uh... Can you come with us for a minute?"
Why did you tour with them? Good question. Some days you still wondered what was your job apart from songwriting.
When you left the room, you found all of them looking with suspicious smiles.
"Okay, what's wrong? What have you done?"
"Nothing yet" Jolly chuckled.
"I'm scared"
"We want to ask you something" Noah started.
Then, Nicholas followed:
"What do you think about singing with us on the stage?"
You gasped too loudly, making them all laugh at your genuine reaction.
You needed a few days to prepare for it, attending to rehearsals and sound checks. But it all went smoothly.
"So, I announce you and then you come in."
You nodded with your eyes fixed on Noah's hands. They were the perfect distraction. Tonight was the night and nerves were eating you.
"You will be there, right?"
Noah smiled, more to himself than anything, but if someone had seen him... The guys would have teased him so much.
"Of course. I will always be"
You nodded with a rapid beating heart.
"But listen, we follow you. You can run away if you want to" He chuckled. "It will be fine"
You nodded and grabbed his hand in a sweet thankful gesture.
"Thank you"
"Free therapy, sweetheart"
You chuckled and blushed at the same time. It wasn't usual to hear him call you pet names, but oh how you loved them.
"My actual therapist would hate you for that"
"Sure thing"
Noah got up and lean to kiss your forehead.
"Remember, black outfit"
You rolled your eyes and tried to hid the blush.
"See you in twenty"
You nodded and watched him walk outside the room, leaving you enough space to think about what would happen at the end of the show, how Noah had guided you through the whole process, how he had been singing a song about your shitty ex for weeks now, how him and the guys had allowed you to pour your rage and feelings in that song only to perform it for you, how now they were giving you the opportunity to do it yourself.
"Okay... That's the last one" Matt whispered to you. "Ready?"
You nodded and the manager hugged you.
"Okay, you've got this"
"Now! We have a very special guest tonight" Noah climbed on his step and look at the fans, who shouted at him. "Are you ready!?" They shouted back at him once more. "Make some noise!" He finally growled as Nick's hands finally fell on the drums.
The lights, the music, the fans, the guys... Noah... They waited for you, the signer with a had stretched out.
With an encouraging push from Matt and the mic in your hand, you stepped in the stage. It all became loud, still, Noah waited for you. You grabbed his hand and he pulled you up in the step. And then he let go of you and moved back.
It was refreshing, so relaxing, so... The adrenile filled your veins so soon, as soon as you saw all that people singing back at you, singing those lyrics about such a sad moment. But you also heard him. For this performance, you had switched places. Your voice was the main one as Noah stood behind you. What originally was your voice doing melodies and choruses, was now Noah screaming and growling, which made your skin crawl.
And almost at the end, during the climax, he appeared next to you and grabbed your hand. You turned to him and looked into his eyes. This hadn't been planned. You hadn't rehearsed this but now you were singing together and you felt so light.
You reached the highest note easily, hand in hand, with him screaming one last time. And then it all went dark and the instruments faded. The loud sounds of people filled the theater.
You were shaking, but it was excitement. Then Noah pulled you to his body and you felt yourself coming back to reality again. His tall lanky body engulfed you and his strong arms kept you close. So close. You hugged him back and gripped his turtleneck so hard you could have ripped it.
Your chest were pressed and you were breathing hard. Then, still in the dark stage, only with faint white background lights, Noah kissed your temple and you felt a wave of feelings. It was there, right there.
The lights came back and he faced the stage, still with his arm around your shoulders. You tried to focus on something else, maybe Folio by your other side who was ruffling your hair, or the fans... But still it was only him you could think of. You stayed with them for the last goodbye to the fans.
You were the one who left the stage first, almost hyperventilating and with your ears buzzing.
You heard them behind you, congratulating each other and hugging.
You turned around and your eyes fell on his, he was already looking at you.
"Noah" You whispered.
He only saw you mouthing his name, but stopped walking. The guys passed you.
"Noah" You repeated his name. He nodded. He knew, he could feel it too.
You finally walked to him and your bodies clashed. Then your lips. You kissed fervousily and your hands roamed his sweaty hair. His arms wrapped around your body and pulled you impossibly close.
The kiss was intense, hard... Teeth clashed, tongues played with each other and little noises escaped you both. You could still hear the eco of the fans outside. But that was all. There was nothing else but Noah.
"Oh god" You panted as you pulled back. With your forehead against his and your hands on his tattooed neck, you could feel his quick pulse. "Noah"
"Yes" He nodded and moved his hand to the side of your face. You both still had your eyes closed and your lips wet from the kiss. Your body only begged for more.
Noah kissed you once more, softly this time, tilting your head back so he could kiss you deeper. "I'm here" He whispered in your mouth.
You finally opened your eyes and he looked at you.
"I love you" That was all you need to hear.

When they call you their Wife (part II)
Sabo
"Sorry to bother you but this is my wife"
Sabo said it to get rid of a man flirting with you
Were you married? No, were you a couple? Technically no, but you were getting there.
Listen, Sabo is a chill, chivalrous gentleman however, since you became his "nanny" as Koala called you. Things changed in him.
At first he was annoyed, because you were like his shadow. They all told him you were supposed to be his partner but he didn't like it. He felt restricted.
But then you became really helpful. You did answer Koala's calls, you never bothered him and you solved things based on his previous decisions.
Then you became proactive, solving part of his paperwork, offering him the newspaper, getting him just what he needed.
He even questioned how he had lived without you for 17 years?
He started to feel things for you, for your easy going attitude but responsable actions. He liked it that you were his partner in crimes.
The only problem was the amount of people who hit on you. You were beautiful, and sometimes men trying to get your attention became a problem.
You were taking breakfast and someone payed your bill, you walked with him on a street and some random dude gifted you flowers.
You two were spying on someone and some entitled asshole decided that you would like to speak with him.
That day, at least 3 men had hit on you when a man who wasn't your objective started flirting with you in a bar.
Sabo was done with all. He just wanted a good drink some chat with you and maybe, just maybe confess what he felt for you.
But the asshole of the bartender started to ask you about your day.
So he said it. He dropped it like a bomb and the bartender stopped, blushed like crazy and walked away after saying a "sorry, my bad"
Sabo loved the reaction and was absolutely delighted by your big smile.
"Wife uh?" You said amused "You haven't even confessed you like me and suddenly we are married?" You added in a whisper leaning towards Sabo.
"You know?" He asked surprised in a murmur and you laughed as he blushed.
"I'm an expert on body language" you bragged and he leaned closer.
"We ought to sell the lie, my lovely wife" he said, getting so close you almost kissed.
"Ask me out" you demanded but he closed the space until you kissed.
You felt your pulse on your lips after the kiss.
"Go on a date with me" he said as he cupped your cheek with one hand.
"Yes"
Ace
"Come on girls, you gotta respect the holy institution of love" just like Luffy he said it to get rid of women. Many of them
They had been following him around the tavern, offering him food, drinks and sex. Some of them were prostitutes but not all of them.
He just wanted to eat, drink something and get back to the sea.
But they couldn't just take a no for an answer.
"No one gotta know", "let's have some fun".
And they were touching, they were touching him too much. They had no shame. So he just dropped the bomb.
Instead of helping, it made everything so much worse.
You watched Ace trying to handle the situation but he was failing, big time. So you decided to help him. After all, he was your boyfriend.
He didn't see you or noticed your presence. He had one woman to each of his sides at the bar.
"Look at you, love, being as faithful as the day we married'' you said out loud getting his attention.
He recognized your voice immediately, he turned in your direction and his face lit up literally.
He turned into a flare and flew towards you, scaring the women and other customers near him.
"You are here" he said with a big smile "my beautiful wifey" he added following an unwritten script. To be true, he wasn't expecting to see you.
You two were in a relationship but it wasn't a common relationship. You weren't following him around and he wasn't following you like a moth to a flame.
You two were able to live without the other, but when you found each other you acted like a common couple.
You fought like a married couple.
Whitebeard had even offered to officiate a pirate wedding in the Moby Dick.
"Husband" you answered his greeting and he hugged you, hiding his face in the crock of your neck.
"I've missed you" he confessed before kissing your neck, making you laugh.
"Good, I've missed you too" you caressed his back and only then you looked at the two women who had harassed your boyfriend. "Ladies, you can stop humiliating yourselves" you smiled at them and they scrammed afraid.
"My hero" Ace muttered in your ear.
"Shut up and eat, whitebeard sent me for you" you huffed, pushing him lightly to get to the table.
"I'm not going back yet" He sat down and so did you.
"I know, husband," you smiled at him "but he made me promise him something, if you don't come I'll stay to annoy the hell out of…"
Clank. Ace had fallen asleep and you giggled at his antiques.
"Geez, how do you manage to look cute even as you sleep on your food?"

tw: brainwashing, drugging, dehumanization, hypnosis, amnesia
"Quinn? Can you open your eyes for me, please?"
Somehow, they managed to get their eyes cracked slightly open. The lights in the room had mercifully been dimmed, and everything seemed fuzzy and indistinct.
"Good. Follow the penlight with your eyes, please."
Quinn did their best, but it all seemed like a big confusing blur.
"Reactions very slow but perceptible. Subject just barely able to respond to stimuli. Twilight sleep state achieved. Based on the results of the tests and their psychological makeup… recommend… and fifty milliliters… around two hours…"
Quinn felt the mask being taken off their face, and the cool rush of fresh air untainted by sedatives was a relief. They cracked their eyes open again as their arm was grasped by one of the assistants. She wiped the inside of their elbow with a cotton swab soaked in cool liquid, and then began to insert an IV line. They were still far too out of it, their limbs much too heavy, to resist.
The IV line was attached to a big bag of light blue fluid. Quinn watched as the drug went drip-drip-drip down the tube and into their arm. The assistant used the IV port to inject a dose of what looked like the same drug.
"We'll give you a little time to adjust to the new medication," said Dr. Moon. "You can just relax."
They assumed they were going to be put back to sleep, but instead they just lay there, staring at the slow drip of blue liquid, in a kind of tranquilized daze. Whatever this new drug was, it wasn't bad. They couldn't remember the last time they had felt so peaceful. Actually, they were feeling pretty good. The all-consuming sleepiness they'd felt from the gas had melted away into a drowsy calm, and their thoughts were gradually returning.
"Quinn? Are you awake? How are you feeling?"
Quinn turned lazily to Dr. Moon. "Good. Really, really drowsy… but good," they said.
"That's excellent to hear," Dr. Moon said. "You're on the good stuff now. We gathered enough data to understand how best to adjust your mind."
"The good stuff…" Quinn's gaze traveled back to the IV line. "What is it?"
"We like to call it cleaning fluid -- but don't be alarmed. It's a nickname, because it's for washing your brain." She laughed. "We have many different components we can use to make it. It's highly customized for the individual, their needs, and our needs."
They really couldn't have been alarmed even if they tried. "What's in mine?"
"Cleaning fluid always starts with Influence Serum. That's our proprietary control medication that removes your mental defenses and inhibitions and increases suggestibility, leaving your mind delightfully pliant and malleable. Then we add Liquid Lullaby -- that's what's keeping you drowsy and docile," she explained. "Your custom mixture also has Pacifier, our anti-anxiety agent, and a little False Paradise, to induce mild euphoria. Plus a few interesting other traces."
"That seems like… a lot of drugs."
"Don't worry, it's especially formulated for you, and completely harmless," she said. "You were so anxious coming here, weren't you?"
"Yeah," they agreed without hesitation.
"And you seem so exhausted. Aren't you exhausted from all the work you do?"
"Yeah, I am."
"And I bet you're so tired of thinking, too. Solving problems. Making decisions. Your poor, tired mind needs a break from all of that."
She was right, that sounded heavenly. What had they even been so worried about? The Brainwashing Department was so nice, and Dr. Moon was so friendly and helpful. "Yeah, I guess I really did need a break." They relaxed into the comfortable chair, resting their arm with the IV on the armrest. Dr. Moon was right. These drugs really were the good stuff.
"Well, it's a good thing you've got a month long vacation, then, isn't it?" said Dr. Moon.
Quinn smiled. "I can't believe it, but I'm actually glad I came here."
"Oh, that's just so lovely to hear you say! I really do think we do great work here. We help people," she said. "And I've got another treat in store for you."
"Oh? What is it?"
"I'm going to turn on the screen and you're going to watch a fun movie for the next couple of hours. It's going to hypnotize you and help you be so obedient. Doesn't that sound nice?"
"Um…" Quinn furrowed their brows. They dimly remembered that they hadn't wanted that, but they didn't really feel like making a fuss when instead they could just relax in a blissful daze.
"Great, let's get you all situated." Dr. Moon reclined their chair a little bit more, then turned on the screen and placed it in front of Quinn's face.
The screen burst to life with a pulsating rainbow spiral, one that drew Quinn's eyes right to the center as the colors shifted and swirled. They couldn't look away. They didn't want to. Something about it was so, so… compelling… like it was the greatest and most fascinating thing Quinn had ever seen, like they could watch it forever.
"There we go. Just watch the spiral. You're too sleepy to resist, aren't you?"
"I'm… I'm not…"
"Oh yes you are. You're much too sleepy to resist."
"I'm… too sleepy to resist…" Quinn heard themself agree.
"The spiral is going to open your mind up very nicely," she said. "You're going to keep your heavy eyes open and watch the spiral, but your mind is going to go to sleep, okay? Deep, deep sleep… a deep hypnotic sleep where you can listen and absorb everything."
They could feel it. They could feel themselves falling asleep in the heart of the pulsating spiral. "I can listen…"
"So obedient, aren't you? Just like you should be. What an excellent subject."
Quinn couldn't help but smile. "…Thank you…"
"Oh, you like the praise, don't you? You're the type that wants to get a good grade in being brainwashed."
It felt like so long since they'd done anything right, really. "Yeah…"
Dr. Moon draped a warm blanket over Quinn's body. "Then be a good little test subject for me, stare in to the pretty spiral, and let yourself be hypnotized."
Quinn nodded slowly. They didn't want to do anything else. They felt a pair of headphones being slipped over their ears. Through them, they could hear soft music playing and Dr. Moon's voice coaxing them to fall asleep, to be obedient and docile, to love the experience of being brainwashed.
They were much, much too sleepy to resist. Besides, they wanted to please Dr. Moon.
They should just listen, let Dr. Moon do all the thinking for them, and fall deep into trance.
"Sleep and obey…" they heard their own voice saying. "Deeper asleep and deeper entranced… too sleepy to resist… I love being brainwashed… I must obey Dr. Moon…"
Their eyelids were getting heavier again, the entrancing spiral a colorful blur, as they repeated the mantras and fell so deep into hypnotic sleep.
They weren't sure how long they remained there, eyes half-open, staring into the spiral. Time seemed to have no meaning. It could've been five minutes and it could've been five months.
"…so happy that you were brainwashed. Three. You'll be docile and obedient. Two. You'll be relaxed and refreshed. And one. You can open your eyes and wake."
Quinn opened their eyes just as the screen turned off, yawning and rubbing the sleep from their eyes. They felt so, so utterly relaxed, like they'd just had the world's finest spa treatment. Like that was the first really good sleep they'd had in years.
They were still in their chair in the clinical room. The machines were quietly beeping, and the bag of drugs attached to the IV looked mostly empty. They were more than content to just rest for a while and see what would happen next, floating in a cloud of bliss.
It didn't take long before Dr. Moon entered. "Why, hello Quinn. Welcome back to the waking world. Did you have a good nap?"
"The best," they said. "I feel amazing."
"Oh, I'm so glad. You really needed that sleep and mental readjustment," said Dr. Moon. "Here, have some water and a nutrition bar."
Quinn eagerly took the food and water. It hadn't really been something they had thought about, but they actually were hungry.
"Did you enjoy the movie?" asked Dr. Moon.
"It was wonderful," said Quinn. "It feels so right to be hypnotized and not have to think for myself. I didn't realize how badly I needed that."
"Oh, you're such a model subject. I think you might be one of my favorites," said Dr. Moon as Quinn beamed in pride. "You're taking to the brainwashing so, so well. I agree, I really think it's exactly what you needed. And you're going to get another round with a new movie -- but first I wanted to give you a little break."
"Thank you," said Quinn through a mouthful of nutrition bar. They couldn't wait to see what the new movie would be like.
"First, though…" Dr. Moon nonchalantly pulled a capped syringe from her lab coat pocket, injecting the contents into the IV line. "We call this one Loose Lips. It's a truth serum. You're probably too hypnotized to really need it, but I want to make sure you're completely honest with me when I ask you embarrassing and invasive questions about your personal life."
Quinn nodded. "That makes sense."
"First off, how do you feel about your boss?"
They frowned, annoyance just barely managing to push through their drugged calm. "She's driving me insane with their unreasonable demands. She's constantly calling me in to work on nights and weekends because we're so short-staffed, and then she acts like it's my fault that I'm burned out. She wastes my time with boring, pointless meetings, and when there's some kind of problem, she micromanages me and keeps asking for status updates when I just need to concentrate on fixing it." The grievances poured out of their mouth easily.
"That sounds really rough," said Dr. Moon sympathetically. "You should tell me everything you know about your boss. I'm very interested. And after that, maybe you can tell me all about your insecurities, secret fantasies, and embarrassing fetishes."
"Sure!" said Quinn, so eager to be obedient and useful.
Dr. Moon questioned Quinn for a while, and Quinn found that they could answer all of their questions easily and in great depth without a hint of shame. It was really nice to be able to speak so freely. Dr. Moon was such a kind, understanding person.
"You've done so well for me," said Dr. Moon. "I couldn't ask for a better test subject. I think it's time for you to get another round of brainwashing, don't you think?"
"Yes, please!" said Quinn with a big smile. "I'm so lucky that I get to spend an entire month in the Brainwashing Department. Do you think I could transfer permanently?"
"I think that would be an excellent idea. We'll see. But for now, I need to change out your IV medication, okay?" Dr. Moon switched the nearly empty bag for a full one. "This formulation is a little different. I've reduced the Liquid Lullaby and added a little River Lethe. That's our best and most gentle amnestic -- a medication that interferes with memory formation and produces amnesia."
"Amnesia…?" said Quinn, feeling a strange bit of anxiety, the first they'd felt since waking.
"You'll be less sleepy this time, but don't worry, you'll be every bit as hypnotized and blissed-out. You're not going to remember the next few hours, though. You probably won't remember much of this conversation, either," said Dr. Moon. "This new medication will leave you feeling pretty fuzzy for a while after your treatment, too. Is all of that okay with you?"
The anxiety was dissolved by their desire to please the doctor. "Of course it's okay. Whatever you think is best." The new drug was already dripping steadily into their veins. It was strange to think that it was already at work in their brain, that they wouldn't be able to remember any of this.
"Then you can just sit back and enjoy your new favorite TV show," said Dr. Moon, turning the screen on again. This time, it was a scene of slow moving clouds floating by.
Quinn barely noticed when Dr. Moon dimmed the lights and left the room, the drugs and the voices in their headphones already turning their mind into useless mush, fit only to listen and obey. After all, they were so sleepy, and the hypnotic program was far too good to resist.

masterlist🎀
“cause i loved you, i swear i loved you, ‘til my dying day.”
we left alexandria with maggie and gabriel, and of course they had the good idea of taking negan with us. I couldn't really blame them, they asked me if I agreed and I stupidly said yes, thinking it would be okay, that I'd forgotten everything, that I'd forgotten my feelings and him, but no...
we were in a house that wasn't very big but was big enough for the four of us, we had to explore outside to find food and secure the house but we couldn't trust negan alone... so someone had to play babysitter. while negan was in his cell in alexandria, gabriel was always visiting negan so i can tell you that gabi is traumatized and for maggie it’s impossible… so of course i decided to be his fucking babysitter.
negan and I sat in the living room in silence, the silence heavy and awkward, neither of us saying anything, afraid of saying too much or not enough, afraid of bringing back memories, feelings... The realization hit me when we were both sitting next to each other on the sofa, I could feel the warmth of his body, that lack of warmth I'd been feeling was even deeper now, the need to feel his touch on me, i was craving his touch... I'd needed him all my life but I'd just buried my feelings deep in my heart and didn't want the others to know…
i dont know how but we ended up arguing, I don't know how or why it started but it all went to hell. my heart was aching, so much, it was my only interaction with him after so long. i needed to be honest with myself, i missed him. i couldn't do anything about it and i decided that blaming him for everything was the solution.
it was his fault that everything had gone wrong, it was his fault for taking me to the sanctuary, it was his fault for treating me better than everyone else. it was his fault for making me fall in love so hard.
i hit his torso with all my strength as he held me firmly. i felt tired, weak and confused, i had no strength left to fight. i let him pull me slowly towards his muscular chest until all my weight was on him, the sensation was so familiar and the feeling of regret resurfaced. the way i betrayed him, he had given me everything, all his love and trust and i broke him into a million pieces thinking that i would feel less guilty for feeling everything i felt and feel for him after what he had done to glenn, abraham and all my family
but it was even worse, I felt even worse, because I'd betrayed him but I'd also betrayed myself.
“I'm sorry... so sorry...” I couldn't breathe, my cheeks were burning with tears that flowed freely, all my emotions were mixed, all my memories came back...
•••••••
“no! loki will always be better than thor”
“pardon??? you can’t be serious right now?” he sits up dramatically on the bed with a look of shock on his face, turning his head slightly to look at me as I grinned from ear to ear.
I smiled even wider, his reaction was so funny. “i’m 100% serious, it’s not my fault if you can’t understand that old man”
he smiles and runs his tongue over his lips before biting his lip lightly. “excuse me young lady? I don't think I heard you correctly” he lies down leaning on his arm to be on top of me
“are you deaf? i said old. man. i mean it’s a common sign in the elderly..” I smiled a little more at every word, I wanted to burst out laughing because of his face.
suddenly, he was on top of me, trapping me between his legs and tickling me. i couldn’t breathe anymore.
“s-s-stop!! omg! please negan…” I couldn't stop laughing, he knew I was extremely ticklish. “that’s illegal… please!!!” I knew he was proud of himself because of his smile.
“say you’re sorry and i’m the funniest, strongest, bravest and sexiest man in the world” his cocky smile plastered on his face, he knew very well that I would give in.
“okay okay! stop! wait.” he stopped for a second
“it’s not hard knowing that almost everyone is dead-” he looked at me with shock in his eyes and was about to tickle me again. “NO WAIT! ok ok… you won…” I took a deep breath. “negan?”
“yes sweetheart?”
“you are the funniest, strongest, bravest and sexiest man in the world?” he looked at me with that arrogant smile I loved more than I cared to admit. “thank you my beautiful girl” he leaned in lightly to place a gentle kiss on my lips, one of his hands remaining on my waist and the other resting on my cheek. my hand rested naturally on his neck to intensify the kiss, i smiled softly, the kiss was so soft and full of promise. we gently separated from each other to breathe and these 3 words came out of my mouth. “i love you” his eyes softened and he placed a kiss on my forehead “i love you too princess, more than anything.”
•••••••
I was lying on his chest as he was drawing shapes on my naked hip, it was about 3 a.m.. it was dark outside and the only source of light was the beautiful full moon in the sky that passed through the thin curtains of negan's room. I was worried about everything... Alexandria, my family and Negan, he's so important to me and I wanted to protect him...
“what’s on your mind sweetheart?” he read me like an open book, and I could hardly ever lie to him. he always felt it deep in his heart.
“i’m… i’m worried about the war, i don’t want you to get hurt and i don’t want my family to get hurt… negan why does it always need to be so hard” I whispered softly, worried and sad because I knew that nothing was going to happen as planned. “i just don’t want to lose you negan, i can’t lose you.”
“everything will be fine baby, i promise”
oh, if he had known that the woman who was lying on his chest expressing her fear of losing him was going to lead to his defeat against Alexandria and get him locked up in a cell for 6 years, if only he had known... she was his soulmate… but was he hers?
••••••••
“i’m so sorry negan…”
“i know sweetheart, i know…” he hugged her as tightly as he could, as if she were going to disappear at any moment... he knew that even if she had betrayed him, she didn't mean him any harm and after all, he would never stop loving her.

I'm crazy and this is mainly based off my oc, but yn is prices adopted daughter that works with him, and the read is like 22-24 and price is supposed to be 45, and he kept it a secret because he's want to protect yn. I wanna see how the 141/könig reaction, can be romantic or platonic don't care lol, yes i know it's stupidly specific, but I'm stupidly specific.
You um... You have no idea, I love this. Me and a friend actually have a story plot where y/n is adopted by Price and they are y/n Price. And I will die on that hill. I'm so glad other people are in the same boat.
Let's be honest it was either Ghost or Gaz who found out first. Ghost because he's a lieutenant and he knows everything so what would you expect?? Gaz because he sits in the filing room in the basements and reads other people's files he can get his hands on for a pass time.
Ghost 💀
Wouldn't say anything at first. When you'd insisted on bringing him back home with you he really didn't fight it that much. You'd dragged him out to the airport and he was honestly just tired and annoyed by the people at that point.
But when you got your tickets and Simon saw the name said Y/n Price, he hadn't entirely registered it. It kind of went in one way and shot out the other.
You both had boarded the plane and you were a load of smiles. Roughly halfway through Simon slowly leaned over as casual as ever. "So you're Price's daughter."
Your eyes widened. "I-what!?" You looked over at him but he didn't really seemed fazed by any part of your reaction. "I'm presuming you're adopted, your biological parents names are on your file."
Your jaw dropped. "And how do you supposedly know this!?"
Simon leaned over slowly and pointed down at the ticket you still had in your hand. The top corner said the purchaser was Y/n Price.
"Oh..." You looked back at him.
"Don't tell anyone, ok?"
"Wasn't planning to." Simon shrugs.
It honestly wasn't a huge surprise to him. Considering Price was caring to all of them, but seemed to coddle you more than the average soldier. And Price just wasn't that type of guy usually.
"So... What now?" You ask, not sure why he brought it up.
"We go wherever the hell you're taking us. Misses Price."
"Simon."
"Mhm, fine fine, I'll stop."
Well, his reaction wasn't nearly as bad as you thought it would be. So you relaxed in your seat again.
Simon now knew, but he didn't bring it up often. Sometimes he'd have a small joke about it in private with you, but other than that he didn't bring it up. What was secret was secret.
He did however let Price know he knew, just in case something went astray in the future and he needed someone he could count on with that information.
Gaz 🧢
Gaz went to Price first to confirm before bringing it up to you. You'd accidentally signed one of your assessments as Y/n Price.
Price was slightly mortified when Gaz asked if it was a mistake on your part. He could have said it was a mistake but his second child is probably too smart for that.
"That's correct. Y/n Price."
Gaz hummed. "Is she your child then?? I didn't know."
"Adopted. I kept her biological parents on her file to protect her."
Gaz nodded in understanding. He was low-key jealous. He was BIG jealous. You were Price's kid?? He wanted to be Price's kid.... This was unfair.
He huffed as he walked to your office.
"Hey Gaz, everything alright??" You ask, still working on paperwork.
"Your father has your assessment."
"Oh thanks-" you paused and looked up at him. "What??"
"Your father has your assessment." He said again, somewhat eerily this time. "Make sure to sign your paperwork differently next time." And he slowly backed away to the door.
"Wait, Gaz!" You called after him, scrambling to get up. "don't tell anyone!"
Gaz was slinking our of your office, closing the door just closed enough you could only see his face. "Your father told me everything."
"Kyle Garrick get back here!"
He slammed the door and bolted down the hallway. You opened it again and ran after him. "Gaz!!"
"You won't catch me!"
You chased him around base but ultimately you couldn't catch up to him.
Gaz understands it's a secret and is very professional about it. But sometimes when you're alone he'll sneak by your bedroom door and your office and whisper something that has to do with Price bring your father. It creeps you out so he keeps doing it.
Price thinks it's funny and doesn't get to stop him so long as he tells no one else about what he knows. And Gaz keeps that promise.
Soap 🧼
He's a little slow, give him some time. There are things that have been shoved in his face that are glaringly obvious. Like one time he found you and Price alone in the gym and he was helping you lift, and Price isn't that loving to anyone I'll tell you that.
Encouraging words and everything. He just assumed it was a rough day since all of them needed some encouragement from Price.
Or that time you accidentally signed something as Y/n Price and he looked over it a million times to make sure everything was correct.
It just... It took him a bit is all.
Everyone else knows by this point so it's one day after a long mission and you all come back you hug Price tightly. "You did so amazing kiddo." He praised.
"Thank you dad."
Loud gasp. Very loud, drawn out gasp.
Soap's jaw drops as he looks at you all wide eyed. "did you just call him dad!???"
You all look at Soap a bit confused and the you nod. "Yeah..? I thought you knew?"
"What!? I never knew this!" Soap exclaims.
"Well... I'm adopted, but it's a bit of a secret so-"
"YOURE ADOPTED BY CAPTAIN-"
Ghost slaps his hand over Soap's mouth and glares at him. "Don't tell the whole base will ya?"
Soap looked over at you when Ghost let's go of him and starts to bounce a little. "This is exciting! I didn't know about it."
You couldn't help but chuckle. "Why am I not surprised??"
"Glad we're all in the know now, but it's a secret Soap, so no going around and telling everyone you see, do you understand!?" Price addressed him.
"Me?? Telling secrets- pfft, Price do you even know who you're talking to?? I won't say a word."
Once he learns it is to keep you safe, he will try his hardest not to say anything. Sometimes in meets he's still so stoked he'll just randomly... "woah... Y/n is Price's kid..."
And then you all look at him weirdly. Like, yes Soap, you've known this for six months now.
König 🐙
Didn't think too hard on how this could go at all
König did not know much about you. He didn't know a whole lot considering that was kept under lock and key by the 141.
It was a huge shock. But now that he looks back on it he can kind of see it... Yeah.
"Hey König?" You asked him while the two of you were sitting on a few empty ammo crates in a dusty old compound waiting for your pickup.
"What is it?" He replied, looking at you curiously under the hood.
"Can I tell you a secret?? You can't tell anyone else though, promise?"
He raised an eyebrow, sitting in silence for a moment before nodding. "Deal. What is this secret?"
You sighed. You trusted him a lot, so surely he'd keep this secret to himself right? There wasn't any real harm in telling him.
"My full name is Y/n Price."
König sat on this thought for a moment before he replied. "You're Price's daughter??"
"Adopted."
He hums. "Alright. Thanks for telling me then??"
You shrug. "You're welcome."
König was shocked. He wasn't expected it at all, especially so out of the blue like that. But he was good at hiding it. He was having a mini crisis inside. You were adopted by the Captain John Price!? What was home life like? Probably really fucking good.
You probably got respected a lot. If anyone other than himself knew. And he wouldn't tell anyone. He had to promise himself that. So it was a lot of pressure keeping this secret that you so very well hid.
But he's honored you told him.

Ask with chapter 5 spoilers below.
From @ariquess-arts
speaking of spoilers and Oswin ((and simping for that man))!! maybe it was answered before but I can't find it. will there be consequences of having romantic points with more than one RO?
Hello dear! You won't have to worry about consequences per se, though depending on certain actions (such as an attempted confession) it may warrant some additional discussion. Oswin is the main one this can happen with, and depending on choices, there may be an instance of him having doubts or asking if MC is sure that they want him - something of that nature. The ROs are all basically interested in MC - all single and ready-to-mingle sort of thing - but they are all fairly realistic in their expectations even when flirted with and such. Duri expects nothing, and neither does ??? at the start, Zahn and Rune are both in the realm of just hoping something could possibly happen.
I mean, my MC is shy and gentle (with a little lot of playfulness in them) and very into Oswin, they nearly said the L word to him. (we all know why they didn't). and I wasn't very interested in other ROs with this specific MC. (they want them very much in a *platonic physical touch full of cuddles and non-romantic hand-holding and feeding them all honey cakes* kind of way) but then the end of chapter 5 happened, and my MC is blushing and stuttering and 'WHAT. WHY.' for ??? if only because I thought it would be funny. like, I see them not even realising it. like, 'yeah, ??? is hot, so what??' maybe the first time in a while they found someone hot besides Oswin and they're not fully aware themselves? that they might-or might not- get a crush on that asshole, lmao. Oswin is still an end-game for them but I just can't stop myself while thinking about any and all Oswin/??? interactions and parallels. (wait is parallel wven a correct word between those two?? probably not, haha) like, imagine your childhood friend has a crush on you and nearly tells you how they feel after days of going red-faced mess just from you looking and them... and you stop them from saying L-word bc you're insecure and 'not-deserving' (can't wait till my MC can shower him in love and show him how wrong he is) and blah blah (/j, his feelings are very important here). only to see them all a mess again a few days later, but for some tall(er? if I remember right) asshole who very nearly killed them, lmao. yeah, I find this specific pair cery interesting and funny. I'm actually judging my MC soooo hard for their taste, lmao.
I totally feel this, lol. No matter if Oswin is romanced or not, an inclination toward this handsome asshole will make him question everything. It won't be a deal-breaker for him if MC flirts with him and also has feelings for Oswin, but there will be some reactions coded for Oswin based on MC's feelings. So if they are romantic with Oswin but have some sort of moment with another person, it may hurt him a bit or shock him. But Oswin knows that MC isn't beholden to wait for him too. He still respects MC's choices because they don't belong to him. Until they are officially "together" he may feel a bit jealous or a bit hurt by this and you may get some unique dialogue and such. So in that sense, there is a bit of a consequence but it won't be like a huge upset or drama. It will be part of a tough conversation about MC's true feelings.
also, I very much like to see my MC suffer,
We are of the same mind, my friend, lol.
so ofc I choose some (all) very bad choices for them and by the end of ch5 I had some sort of epiphany bc hear me out.
LOL, so you were beat the hell up. I like it.
each time MC goes through someting bad (tm), Oswin is hit with it twice as hard.
Yup! You nailed it! :D And you're gonna see some of the effects on him in chapter 6.
you know, the something something, input his ch5 talk in here but make it worse bc now, he's actually responsible (in a way) for MC and their well being. so I replayed the game again with the same MC and exact same choices bc I this time, Iwas fully aware both of them will suffer, lmao. (it made ch4 choice of calling out for dads to hold MC extra angsty for me like the first time wasn't enough, haha, bc can you imagine what Oswin celt then? not only unable to protect MC but also give them the comfort they needed? ouch).
YES, that is super impactful. And that negative perception he has of himself tingles and starts to eat at him again. Not MC's fault of course and he knows this, but he knows that he's at a stage of life where he must conquer these things that plague him.
also, also, there's two parts of the story extrememly hard for me. 1) what do you mean I have to choose whom to give the cake to? my MC wants to feed them all! let my MC feed everyone honey cakes pls!!! even the assh--???. (I'm unable to give the cake to anyone but Z. they deserve it so much).
Teehee! Sorry! (kinda) I knew when I did that it would make it conflicting, lol.
2) I HAVE TO CHOOSE WHO TO GIVE A PRESENT TOO? Lunan, I'm sorry you're so wvil for that. how can I choose between my beloved dads and my best friend? ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ (it's Lakota, I can't stop myself from choosing Lakota, I'm so sorry, dads).
Teehee again! I debated about being nice and letting MC get a few things but changed my mind. If it is any consolation, they will all be happy to have MC home and that is gift enough. <3
I'm sorry it turned out so long. I spent like, qhat? 2 hours writing (and re-writing) this ask to make it shorter, but oh well. and sorry for all the mistakes, as I got out-drunk by seventy-something years old neighbours of mine (where do these ppl get stamina for taht what). not to mention English not being my fisrt language, I had to take it off my chest. ಥ_ಥ
Not to worry, my friend! This was an enjoyable read and made me smile. Don't feel bad about being out-drunk - I promise - they felt it worse the next day even if they pretended not to, lol.
(I may or may not have a rather long ask in my phone notes about how I feel about your IF ((positive, really)) that sits there for 2 weeks already, but I don't really want to spam your ask box, so instead let me just...)
I love this story so much and I'm so so thankful you chose to write it and share with us, thank you sooo much!!
I am so glad you love it and that you shared these things with me. I'm so glad I can bring you something that lives in your heart like this and that brings you enjoyment. I can't wait to bring you more. ^_^

hi! This is my first time asking I'm really sorry if this is bad 😭 but how would the boys(anyone of your choice!) React to mc with a city accent? (Yes I saw the country one but what if city?). And they don't try to hide the accent, they use it like 24/7?
No worries it's perfectly fine! Once again I was very unsure what qualifies as a city accent so google is helping me here. Most of google led me to New York slang, so that's kinda what I'm basing this around. I've discovered that there are things that I say that are considered city slang I guess??
Characters: Riddle, Epel, Vil, Malleus
Riddle:
he half understands
sometimes he is able to decipher what your slang means and sometimes he can't
if he can't he will ask you what it means and take mental notes
he thinks the accent is neat
though when it comes to formal events or events with important people, he may ask if you can tone it back a bit
thanks to you he can understand more of what Cater says
Epel:
ah yes
the battle of accents has begun
he doesn't understand what you're saying
and he's so confused
but also too stubborn to learn
he believes city people think they're above country folk
so around you he's talking in his accent more
he sees this as some weird competition in his head
other students are so confused when you two have a conversation
they don't know what either of you are saying
it's like you two are talking in two separate foreign languages
Vil:
oh you bother him
just like he does with Epel, he's telling you to tone it back
scolding you when he hears your accent
around Vil, you have to speak "properly"
he understands everything you're saying tho
he's met enough people and been around the internet to hear everything
if you don't give in he may give up on asking you to tone it back
but that will only happen after a long time and as long as you aren't in Pomefiore
Malleus:
poor boy has no idea what you're saying
but he will gladly learn it if you want to teach him
I'm begging you please teach him
because Malleus will start using your slang and try talking like you do
it's so entertaining to see others reactions when Malleus uses your slang
and he's so happy to learn about your accent and slang that he even tells others in Diasomnia what he learns
and you know Sebek is going to take anything his master says and run with it
so you've somehow managed to get both of them to use your slang and accent
Just imagine hearing Malleus saying something is lit or saying he's got beef with someone

HIIII 😁
I'm leaving a lil idea in here: how about one or both of them being covered in soot (like tommy was) and them having a lil intimate moment helping the other or eachother clean up?
HI HI HI THANK YOU FOR THE REQUEST <333
this one got soooo away from me lol it was supposed to be like 200ish words but omg yeah it got a lil deep
wc: 1.2k
no warnings but tommy's pretty sad in this (and buck's there for him <3)
also on ao3!
sense of belonging
Tommy can’t help it, he has to see Buck. He feels lost, as if nothing is ever going to be okay again, and he needs someone he knows he can count on. Someone he can trust. Which is how he finds himself outside the 118, grimacing at his old firehouse. He can’t deny that he misses it, but he also can’t deny that he never did belong there.
Eddie spots him from inside and makes his way over with a raised eyebrow and a smirk. “Hey, man! What are you doing here?”
Tommy tries to smile but it falls short. “Just finished work. Needed to see if… if he’s okay.”
There’s a shift, then, and Eddie just knows. Knows that something must have happened. Something must have set him off. “Yeah. Yeah, man, he said something about getting a shower just a few minutes ago. Got a bit dirty on the last call, which… seems like you did too.”
Tommy shrugs. He knows he looks like hell. Dirt sticks to his eyebrows and dried blood lines the straight-edge of his jawline and god knows what else is there. He couldn’t look at himself in the mirror long enough to clear it off. Not after the shift he had. Not after the civilian he lost.
Moving swiftly to the shower room, giving forced smiles to anyone who looks his way, he finds Buck stepping out the shower with a towel around his waist. If it were any other day, Tommy wouldn’t be able to look away from the water clinging to his toned muscles and the short hairs trailing below the towel. But now, in this moment, he can’t look away from his face, from the way his eyebrows are furrowed and his lips are slightly parted and his birthmark seems pinker than usual, almost crimson. And then he gets to watch how his face completely changes when he spots him. How he brightens immediately. As if just seeing him makes him the happiest man alive.
It hits him square in the chest. He’s not sure how someone like Buck can look at someone like him and have that type of reaction. He’s not used to it. Sometimes he still wonders if this is the universe playing some sort of sick and twisted game with him and that one day he’ll wake up to find this all gone. Ripped away. Just like everything and everyone else he’s ever known.
But seeing that Buck is okay–seeing him there and happy and alive–brings up all these emotions Tommy can’t quite figure out right now. There’s relief, that’s for sure, and there’s happiness, but there’s also a stronger feeling than the usual flutter in his stomach and the tightness in his chest and that should scare him but it doesn’t. Buck opens his mouth to talk but all he gets out is a hmmph as Tommy takes two large steps toward him and they collide in a tight embrace. He doesn’t care that Buck is soaking wet from the shower and drenching his clothes, he just needs to feel close.
Buck seems to understand though because he says nothing. Instead, he pulls Tommy in closer and gently scratches at the short hairs at the base of his neck. It calms him down enough to pull back and look at Buck properly, taking him in and memorising that look on his face. Just in case.
“Hey,” he whispers, voice hoarse.
Buck’s eyes soften. “Hey, yourself. Bad shift?”
“You have no idea.”
Buck cups his face and runs the pad of his thumb over his cheek. Tommy doesn’t remember a time he’s ever been touched so gently before. “I think I have some idea,” he says, sliding his hand down Tommy’s jaw and furrowing his eyebrows at the blood. “Let’s get you cleaned up, yeah?”
“You should get dressed first,” Tommy mutters. He’s suddenly struck with the feeling that he’s being a burden. That he’s invading Buck’s space. His time. “Incase you need to run out.”
Buck seems like he’s about to protest when he realises that Tommy’s right. “I’ll be back in a second, I swear,” he sighs before ducking out of the room and leaving Tommy alone. It’s not until this moment he realises just how tired he really is. All he wants to do is go home and crawl into bed but he feels stuck. Like he can’t move. Risking a glance at the mirror, he’s grateful to find that he can’t see himself through the steam. He’s not quite ready to face himself yet.
But before he can dwell on it, or think about how it felt to watch someone die right in front of him (not for the first time, but certainly not for the last time either, and that makes his stomach twist uncomfortably), Buck is running back into the room and taking Tommy’s face in his hands. He tilts his head to one side and then the other before tutting and reaching out to turn on the tap, keeping one hand on Tommy at all times. Once he’s satisfied with the temperature of the water, he runs a cloth underneath it and rings it out before slowly reaching up to dab it over Tommy’s jawline.
“Is this your blood?”
Tommy shrugs. “I’m not sure. I don’t think so.”
Buck pauses for a moment before moving to wipe at the dirt coating his eyebrow. “Do you wanna talk about what happened?”
Tommy shakes his head.
“Okay,” Buck says after a while, scrubbing away the last of the dirt. His touch is so gentle and so caring that Tommy fears he might cry. “Do you want to come eat with us? Bobby’s making his famous lasagne.” He pulls away the cloth and drops it in the sink, running some water over it for a moment before switching off the tap and putting all his attention back on Tommy. Both of his hands drop to Tommy’s shoulders and he smooths his palms across the broad expanse, offering a sweet smile. “You’ll love it.”
“I don’t know,” Tommy sighs, shaking his head. “I don’t want to intrude.”
“You wouldn’t be, I promise. Bobby will love to have you; we all will.”
And that’s how Tommy finds himself sitting where he used to sit all those years ago, only this time he knows that he doesn’t have to hide who he is. So when Chimney brings up something Tommy did once on a call so long ago it feels like a past life, something shifts inside of him, and when Bobby claps him over the shoulder with a proud smile, that something becomes a little lighter. Hen smiles at him and Eddie bumps his arm against his and Ravi listens intently as he retells the story from his point of view. And when Buck laughs at a joke he makes, his head tilting back to let out the loveliest sound Tommy’s ever heard, and then he looks at him to see if he’s laughing too, Tommy can’t help the genuine smile that graces his face. And he realises he feels like he finally belongs. And that maybe, just maybe, things will be okay after all.
#YAY I FINALLY WROTE FOR THEM#im lowkey kinda proud of this#i feel like tommy is so confident on the surface and in general but he just doesn't feel like he belongs anywhere#this is as new for him than it is for buck#bucktommy#evan buckley#tommy kinard#kinkley#tevan

Who the hell is Gojō Satoru?
Some thoughts on his character in 236
Seeing everyone arguing about Gojō’s characterisation in 236 over the last week makes me realise just how good the chapter is, no matter how dissatisfied I am with Gojō's death.
When you're upset about something, it's hard to judge accurately whether something is 'bad' or whether you simply don't like it — and they are different things. Interestingly, 236 presented me with a conflict I've never experienced when following a story before. I'm really disappointed with the way Gege Akutami chose to end Gojō's story, but I think 236 will go down as one of the most beautiful chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen. In that sense, my feelings about the chapter after a week of sitting with it aren't too unrecognisable from my initial feelings — just with all of the big emotions that were colouring my judgment stripped away.
I think there *is* value in immediate reactions, and I think much of the initial outrage about the chapter was simply people grieving what was an intentionally shocking end to a beloved character. I hate that people tried to police social media reactions to the chapter, because I think everyone should be allowed to process their feelings in their own online space (as long as they don't bring harm to others, of course).
Aside from the outpouring of emotion, there have been countless arguments about 'who' Gojō was as a person in the end, and that doesn't sit right with me either. I think many artists would be disappointed to hear fans of their work insist that there is one 'proper' interpretation — because the value of sharing your art with the world is in how different people receive it based on their own experiences.
To me, that's Gojō Satoru as a character.
I know lots of people have already shared some variation of the post below (and everyone has moved on to 237 now anyway) but this was sitting in my drafts so I thought I may as well hit post before 237 is officially released!
Gege Akutami keeps Gojō at a distance from both the readers and the characters around him, making it deliberately difficult to know who he is as a person. Despite that, everyone in-universe and out has something to say about Gojō's character, but we've never really known how Gojō views himself until this chapter.
For maybe the first time in Jujutsu Kaisen, we get to deep dive into Gojō's interior world and hear his innermost thoughts when he's at his lowest and most vulnerable. As a result, something fascinating happened across the fandom.
Even when Gojō literally tells Getō that the 'wretchedness of isolation' is something he shares with Sukuna, that he gave everything he had so that Sukuna might understand him and be understood in turn, and that he knows not everyone will get it, some people called Gojō 'out of character' in 236.
And isn't that just so damn meta?!
Akutami loves challenging readers' assumptions through his characters, so while the chapter is shocking, it isn't really surprising. I'd even go as far as suggesting that the journey of emotions the reader experiences while reading 236 is the exact same journey Gojō is going on in-story.
The thing is, I've seen tons of people arguing about whether Gojō was selfless or selfish, whether he fought for the love of his students or for the love of the fight, whether he took strong young sorcerers under his wing from a place of care or simply as a means to an ends — but I think the point is that it's always been all of those things at once.
Because he's human, and humans contain multitudes.
I think we were meant to have our view of Gojō shaken by 236 — the same way Gojō's view of himself is challenged in this chapter. However, just because we can find some truth in Nanami's criticism of Gojō, doesn't mean that his interpretation of Gojō's character is the correct one — especially when it's entirely possible that what happens in the airport isn't even real.
Getō listens with empathy as Gojō confesses his self-doubt and regrets, the solitude of his strength, and the dehumanisation he experienced as the 'Strongest'. He even expresses jealousy when Gojō admits he had fun fighting someone strong enough to understand him. Then, only two pages after Gojō says, 'You can cherish a flower and help it bloom, but you don't ask it to understand you', Nanami appears and calls him a pervert for his approach to sorcery.
It's actually really funny.
Importantly, Nanami isn't exactly wrong for saying the enjoyment Gojō gets from fighting is a little disturbing (and, to be clear, I *adore* this about him) — it's just not the whole picture of Gojō Satoru.
Akutami actually gives us some lovely imagery to visually represent the gulf between those who understand the solitude of strength and those who don't — Gojō and Getō sit on one side of the bench while Nanami and Haibara sit on the other, with each duo facing in opposite directions.
I don't think Akutami is implying that either side is wrong or right — it's just two different perspectives. Nevertheless, Gojō is pictured side by side with someone who understands him, and back to back with someone who doesn't understand him but who cares for him all the same.
Recognising this, he pivots to asking Nanami about something they can both relate to and receives an important lesson in return. What Nanami means and what Gojō takes from it is deliberately ambiguous, like everything that's discussed inside the airport:
Could Sukuna have won without the Ten Shadows?
Who does the 'flower' represent: Gojō, the people around him, or both?
Did Gojō reach Sukuna like he hoped?
Why exactly is Getō jealous?
Does Gojō feel satisfied?
Is Nanami's assessment of Gojō's character correct?
What is the relevance of north and south?
Which direction did Gojō choose?
Is it all in Gojō's imagination or is it real?
Whether we'll receive answers to those questions remains to be seen, but I highly suspect that most of them don't even have a definitive answer.
Once again, it's just a matter of perspective, and I think that's Gojō's character in a nutshell. Whichever side of the bench you're sitting on, whatever you see in Gojō says more about you than it does about him — and that's exactly why it's so fascinating to see the fandom erupt into arguments about who's interpreting the character correctly.
I can honestly say I think the chapter is really beautiful even though I hate what happened to Gojō, and that's an entirely new experience for me. For that alone, Akutami has my praise. Whatever happens in the rest of the story will determine whether 236 becomes my favourite chapter in the whole of Jujutsu Kaisen — isn't that bizarre?
By the way, I found a really thoughtful post about some of the word choices in 236. The poster shared some really interesting insights across a series of posts and they convey the tone of the chapter really well. Well worth checking out!

Hello! Your banner says that if you ask about mushrooms, you can talk about them for hours, let's check. 1) What is your favorite mushroom and why? 2) What effects of mushrooms on both animals and people do you know? 3) From question 2, which effect do you like the most in terms of effectiveness? 4) What do you think of the cordyceps mushroom? 5) What is your favorite dish based on mushrooms or a dish where mushrooms are an additive?
!!WARNING!! I am not a mycologist or fungi expert! I'm just a girl who has been hyperfixated on mycology for three years and counting lmfao. My information comes mostly from books written by mycologists and expert foragers, but take this all with a grain of salt lol. I do not know everything, and there's a chance I'm straight-up wrong about some of this! I don't think I am, I would never intentionally spread incorrect information, but be careful just in case! anyways, mandatory warning out of the way, on to the potentially-partially-misinformed-but-I-don't-think-it-is infodump!!!
1)
Okay, I think this is the seventh time I’ve answered the question about my favourite mushroom 😭, I’ll answer again instead of just linking it this time lol.
I have a few favourites for a few different reasons!
The violet court/webcap (more than the viscid violet court, but I do love that one too lol) is one of my favourites purely because it is a beautiful rich purple to black colour- it’s really pretty! I also like the bluefoot bonnet, and the newly discovered Mycena subcyanocephala mushroom and the Stropharia caerulea mushrooms are also beautiful. Bioluminescent fungi are absolutely mesmerizing in the dark too! I couldn’t pick my favourite beautiful mushroom lol.
For sentimental reasons, the mica cap mushroom was the first one that I ever spore-printed, the prince mushroom was the first one I ever foraged and ate, and the king oyster was the first one I ever grew myself!
2)
…okay, I know a lot. I mostly just know of their effects on humans though, so apologies. I’ll rant about one particular poisonous example to start, the destroying angel! It’s a particularly brutal one, because the symptoms often won’t show up for hours or even days after you ate the mushroom, and a lot of times at that point it’s already too late. It also has a brief period where you think or feel like you’re getting better, before it comes back in full swing to kill you. Typical symptoms of a messed up stomach, along with kidney and/or liver failure. It’s brutal, and it’s very common for patients who are hospitalized by it to die, because by the time they feel bad enough to go to the hospital, the poison is well in their systems. It’s closely related to the death cap, and together they are known as the deadly duo. Another interesting one is the Alcohol Inky, Inky cap or Tippler’s bane mushroom! It’s edible- unless you have alcohol in your system. Even the tiniest bit before or after eating this mushroom (with a four-day buffer) will set off poisonous reactions! Hence the name “Tippler’s bane” lol. On a more positive note, there’s tons of medical mushrooms! Turkey tail has been used to strengthen the immune system of cancer patients. The agarikon has been used to strengthen lungs, treat asthma and help with coughs! Of course, a famous example of a medical fungi is the penicillin vaccine that saved polio patients, but I don’t know too much about that so I’ll try to avoid spreading false information lol. It is amazing though! Even psilocybe- magic mushrooms- have been used to treat PTSD, OCD, depression etc. (CLINICALLY of course, don’t do drugs kids lmao). Hallucinogenic mushrooms are a whole other story about their effects on humans and other animals, and I admit I’m not that knowledgeable about that side of the foraging appeal lol. LSD is kinda wack, to put it bluntly. You kinda have to do shrooms to properly understand the effects lmfao- You gotta be one with the mushroom, man.
3)
Personally, I haven’t experienced any of these effects myself. I have yet to poison myself, I tend to turn to Tylenol instead of fungi when I’m sick and I haven’t done shrooms lmao. I think that the poisonous mushrooms are very cool and effective, there are so many different ways that fungi can try to kill a human, and it’s very fascinating how they each go about it! The death cap in particular is a very effective killer, so props to it.
4)
ah, cordyceps. The inspiration for The Last of Us, one of the finest irl body horror parasites, an equally disturbing and fascinating fungi!
I think cordyceps is a very incredible fungi, although I’d probably have a different opinion if I was a particularly unlucky bug who got infected with it. For those of you who don’t know what cordyceps is, it’s a brutal parasitic fungi responsible for the horrors known as zombie ants. A mycelium system grows inside the ant and fucks up its head, in the simplest of terms. The ant suddenly has a very strong urge to climb, and so it does, typically to the underside highest leaf it can get to. From there, it locks it’s mandibles to the leaf and stays there until it dies (this can take a few days, which must really suck for the ant). The mycelium makes itself known, attaching to the leaf and making the ant appear white and fuzzy, and then a mushroom pops out of its body and spreads its spores far and wide to go commit more atrocities in the cordyceps family name.
cordyceps isn’t the only fungi that’s parasitic on insects, although it is perhaps the best known. Some fungi in this parasite branch are even parasitic on other fungi, while some are the boogeymen haunting the dreams of larvae, caterpillars, spiders and more. Luckily none go after humans, so we’re safe for now! Insects are simply smaller and easier to take over, and aren’t filled with as much blood, complicated organs, immune system defences and body heat. Fungi could probably figure out a way to do this to us, but it’s simply more convenient for them to not. There are tons of fungi that are parasitic to humans though, they just don’t turn us into zombies!
5)
This Morel soup I had at a mycology convention once. It was so fire lmao.
#Ask me about mycoheterotrophs and the wood wide web lol#My record for that is an hour and twenty minutes of yapping#Anyways#fungi rant time!!!#:D#none of these things are really what I know the most about#But I can infodump about most mushroom related topics when given the chance lol#Fungi reproduction and behaviour is also something I could probably yap about for a bit lol#I know more about actual fungi than the mushrooms they fruit lol

So, today I want to talk about Maladar: one of the early books of Israeli Fantasy. Which might make it sound older than it is, since it was written in the 2000s, but I think I can stand behind what I say. If you have an interesting contradictory example - don't hesitate to point it out!
Now, admittedly, I did not reread the book in preparation for this post. My criticism of it is mostly based on memory. I did not hate the book, and neither did I love it - it was a decent book, but not a great one.
I did watch a video by the author (Liat Rotner) about her thought process in writing the book (in Hebrew), though. This post is based off of this video, in which she looks at three thigs in non-Israeli Fantasy literature she seems to consider significant: references to myths, connection to war and inventing a language. And thus, I intend to touch each of those in turn.
To start with mythology references: there barely are any. There's a general build that's supposed to be based on Kabbalah - how human deeds and thoughts affect other dimensions or worlds, tilting the scales for good or bad - but that's mostly an oversimplification. There are a couple of things that are taken directly from the Tanach, but they're distorted and don't create a coherent image. There are a couple of Midrashim I think Rotner could've incorporated, but she didn't. And the most major offense is how the book seems to imply Israel doesn't have folktales - ignoring centuries of culture in exile, without showing any reaction to it from the folkloric representation of countries Jews lived in. It seems to detach the history of diaspora from the history and existence of Israel, which may not have been intentional but is the implication I see. I have tried to articulate this point a couple of times already and failed, so pardon me if it seems a little dense.
As to the war connection, well, it is an interesting angle. LotR really was inspired by Tolkien's experience from WWI, to a degree, and with the current situation in Israel - a hostage crisis with an ongoing war - this could probably resonate very well with people. Except for the relative smaller scale, but I really can't blame Rotner for not predicting that in 15 years, Gil'ad Shalit will seem like a small problem. She did got criticized for presenting a political opinion in a middle grade book, but I don't think that should be that much of a problem. If anything, I think she overestimated the significance of that detail, as many Fantasy books weren't written under the shadow of war. However, of everything in the book... she very likely presented it pretty well, all things considered. Though it might be that I'm too close to her political opinion to notice the problem.
And now, we get to languages. Which... [deep sigh] Look. Lots of people think that they have to invent a cool new language for their Fantasy novel because that's what Tolkien did. But Tolkien was a freaking linguist. He was, very specifically, and expert on that topic. There's a common claim that he invented the language before he made up the story that went with it. I'm pretty sure Rotner's BA is in literature, not linguistics.
The concept of Maladan, as she presents it, is interesting: she says she mixed some Yiddish she learned with some Aramaic she knew from home (she grew in a religious family) and with ancient Hebrew to create it. But... how shall I put it...
We have exactly one sample of Maladan in the text of the book, and it's when our main protagonist sees the ancient prophecy that's related to the magic amulet he has. And I remember quite clearly that this prophecy was written pretty much wholesale in Aramaic, outside of one weird word that I'm going to have to assume was taken from Yiddish. Now, to be fair, it's no better or worse than the Ancient Language of the Inheritance Cycle, which is a pack of random Latin and Germanic words (to my understanding). In that case, the only criticism I have that is particularly on Maladan and not the Ancient Language is that it's either under-developed or under-presented.
To conclude, I would like to note that all those point, on paper, are good ones: the outside references, lived experience and invented languages of Tolkien did contribute to the overall experience of reading his book. I simply think that Rotner didn't do that all that good. Perhaps the mere fact she attempted to copy a success destoyed her chances, or perhaps she didn't do enough research. I don't know. If you enjoy the book - great! All the more power to you! I simply think there needs to be a book that does this better. (Please don't point me towards Charashta, I've already read it.)
