This whole civil war on reading vs not reading comics is baffling to me. Like honestly this whole arguement is stupid.

Full disclosure before people come after me: I am a comic reader! I love reading comics (although I havent been able to read nearly as many as I would like)

Anyway yeah my whole 2 cents on this.

On one hand, I get why avid comic readers are annoyed. You're favorite character being what you perceive as wildly misinterpreted and being unable to find the content you want is annoying. But also it's so easy to just... click off? Like no one is forcing you to read it, just go find a different work instead of complaing to the author or whatever.

Also, comic characters have been written and rewritten by so many people and have had so many changes to their storylines and personality that a lot of stuff being argued as "not canon" very likely could have been at some point! And that's not even talking about other media like shows and movies.

The first example that comes to mind is Superboy (Conner "Kon" Kent). Comic Kon and Young Justice Cartoon Kon are drastically different in both personality and appearance. Comic Kon is the most bisexual coded person I've ever seen and Cartoon Kon is a grumpy asshole who looks like he stepped straight out of bootcamp. But guess what? Regardless of which one you like most both are canon in DC!

As far as I'm concerned, comic timelines and characters are a mess with or without other media types and we should be allowed to pick and choose whatever traits we want from it. Do I want Kon to have bisexual hair? Yes! Am I ignoring that Batman beats his kids in some runs? Also yes!

And because I saw a few complaints like these once before I'm going to address them.

Yeah but it happened. If people want to take that little hint of a trait and expand on it then power to them!

"Character A never actually had this role or did this so stop writing them like that!"

It's called a headcanon or an AU. This may be surprising to you, but both of these are common in fandom spaces. If that headcanon or AU is popular it's because people obviously like it. That person may not be you, and that's fine too! Just let them have their fun and leave to read something else.

And I'm not claiming to be innocent in all this btw! Lord knows I get loud and angry about many MCU fans' interpretation of Jake Lockley from Moon Knight. That being said, the reason I'm loud and angry isn't just "oh they made him less friendly and changed some personality traits". Its the fact that they interpret him as an "evil" alter which perpetuates hateful stereotypes about a very real and very stigmatized disorder with very little decent representation. The whole "Jake is an evil bloodthirsty alter" spreads those fearmongering ideas and has the potential to harm actual systems in the long run whether it's intended to or not. Disclaimer: I am not a system, but I do try my best to listen to what they have to say. By all means listen to their opinions on the situation over mine.

Even so, I don't go and yell directly at those creators. I click off. I don't have to read or look at their stuff if I don't want to.

Another complaint from comic readers I see a lot is "oh but it's so easy for them to just pick up a comic and read it! They are just being lazy/stubborn/etc." And honestly...

It's really not!

It took me YEARS to start reading comics because it was so overwhelming and I had no one to help me. Keeping track of all the comic runs is hard enough let alone actually finding and reading them. Comics are simply not well organized and it's hard to find a part to jump into when so many of them rely on prior knowledge.

I did. He had no answers for me and looked like he would rather be talking to literally anyone else instead of a clueless 15 year old girl. Stepping into spaces like that can be intimidating in itself for a variety of reasons, let alone trying to ask for help. Online it's not always much better. So many people won't give an honest recommendation and others won't be specific enough. Many comic runs have similar titles, and honestly it's best if you just know the name of the writer.

Trying to break into comics is just genuinely difficult for a lot of people depending on their situations whether it be enviornmental, financial, or mental.

Also you can't just force someone to read the comics! If they don't want to and just want to watch the shows or absorb fanon content then that's their preference! You don't have to interact with it! Am I saying that no one should read comics? No! But I am saying that not everyone has the same accessibility and the way some comic readers treat these people isn't doing favors. Attacking them over stuff and getting annoyed at them isn't going to encourage them to pick up a comic and read it but rather push them away from something really fun.

Okay now that's out of the way, time for me to turn my sights on the "not reading" camp.

You can't just attack people for suggesting canonical content under your prompts. Unless they are being a dick about it. Then you can go ham. But if someone is coming in like "hey btw A is a thing that happens canonically and it might be fun to do!" then there is no reason for you to act like they just ate your baby!

It is also not completely unreasonable for someone to simply suggest that you try out a comic or two (provided that they are being polite and are actually willing to help you with clear reccomendations). There is no reason for you to get pissy at them, just as it is not a requirement for you to take up their advice. If you don't want to read it or can't currently that's fine, but just know that you have the potential to be introduced to something you really enjoy and that consuming canon content will more than likely help you with your writing!

okay, really stupid vent incoming: idk why i'm thinking about this (again) but i feel so bad about the fact that i have a lot of money saved but have barely worked in my life...

ok, so. first job i ever had, i worked from december 2019 to march 2020. i ended up leaving bc the place shut down temporarily for a few months bc of covid. during most of those months, i collected unemployment bc they were offering it for ppl whose jobs were closed bc of covid. that + the stimulus checks are where i got most of my savings. when they reopened, i ended up not going back when they offered bc i didn't like the job that much.

since then, only other job i had was at the same place (different area tho) but i worked there for only like 2 or 3 months (september 2022 - december 2022 i think?) before i suddenly quit without notice over email bc i was practically having a mental breakdown. i think the stress from college + anxiety from the job + the fact i was sick contributed to why i did that but still... i still feel so bad about that btw bc they were nice to me and i did... that. what an asshole/loser move of me...

but yeah, i feel so bad about this. i feel like a bum and a loser bc i haven't been able to keep a job for very long and i have all this money that i barely worked for... i guess it's not really my fault but still.

i've helped my parents and brother with stuff with the money so i guess that's good but again, still.

also i feel like my parents are secretly disappointed in me bc of this. they've never said or implied anything (much) but i'm paranoid that they are. my brother has had two jobs, still at one currently, and he's lasted more months than i did. at least ik they're happy i'm going to community college (finally).

i'm gonna try to get a summer job this year but i kinda doubt i'll get one, i didn't last year. :/ (that's why i ended up with a job during september-december)

So I'm sitting here, minding my own business, being one with nature, you know the drill. And then my phone receives like 25 messeges via Messenger delayed by like 2 hours for Gods fucking know what reason.

When my 4th semester started I was excited about extracurriculars because fuck my main curriculum, give me extra hours of actually exciting work. There was course about religion or myths in antiquity, I can't really remember. It was one of few courses led entirely in English for exchange students to get some very much needed ECTs points (it's boring EU system for universities to cross educate; essentially every course, class, seminar and lecture has set amount of points (from 1 to 5 I think) and this means that every university in EU can accept you as a student because they have a measure to know what you did or didn't do). I thought it's gonna be cool.

Now the triggering part; the guy was stuttering. I think, I'm not a doctor. And at first I just found it a bit annoying but it progressively became just vexing and made it impossible to take anything from any lecture.

I never had classes with him before so I didn't know he does that. Even when he doesn't speak English (which he does quite poorly too btw) he does stutter... Just a lot less. So I figured maybe it's just stress thing. Like, when I need to make presentations I also fumble around words a bit, I avoid eye contact, I try to hide away my hands. But nope, he just does that.

Now, I know from my sister that it is something that can be trained or practiced. For all I care he could just talk slower and therefore, be significantly more understandable. Listen, there are few components making his lectures complelty incomprehensible; he stutters, he talks fast, he talks quietly and he speaks foreign language poorly. And it's not even me just being nitpicky and malicious. Listen, if foreign students have to come to *me* to ask if I understood anything, you know shit is bad.

At some point 3/4 of a class just disappeared and stopped attending this lecture. They lowkey rather dealt with consequences of not enough ECTs later, than attend that mess.

And I one time made a joke that I'll give a guy a phone number to my sister to get his speech sorted out, in an earshot of his pupil or whatever.

Let's make this clear; I have better stuff to do than bully professors for their short comings. I'm not being mean spirited because I enjoy anguish. I'm being disappointed and upset over the fact, I spent 90 minutes in a class while I cannot understand 80% of what is he saying and I need to fucking pass that class.

He's in a position where he needs to pass the knowledge. Nobody is coming after him for things he cannot control. I was specifically complaing about his inability to do his job and thus, me not being able to do mine. He's significantly older than me, he had to deal with even worse educational system than I did. How did nobody stopped and helped the guy out??? Listen, I wouldn't get out of primary school if I haven't self taught myself how to read because nobody gave a shit about me, how is he getting a pass at a higher position?

Again, talk slower or don't have classes in a language you speak so poorly. That's it. Problem solved. Hit up speech therapist if you want to.

I didn't pass his subject because I was kicked out of the univeristy. No biggie. I thought my adventure with his poor English and horrible way to teach was done and dusted. But fuck me.

So an angry gal was hitting my dms all night long, telling me what a horrible human being I am for slandering a guy with speech issues. And I don't even know how to respond to this. Or if I even should, given that I don't fucking care.

Not a single thing of value has been said. It really is just a barrage of insults and made up arguments against me. Listen, if I wanted to, I could go and write a level headed and constructive criticism of his work ethics. And his stumbling over words wouldn't even make the list. He's forgetful, he is not communicative. If you want his insight or answer on your project, you will never get it; he responded to my email 2 hours after I already gave my presentation basically going blind because he's a nitwit. He has terrible priorities, like going on and promising improvements, that never get implemented and fuck up his schedule. The only redeeming qualities are; he has some decent knowledge on the topics of his expertise (which are not either myths or greek religion, in case you were wondering) and has adorable puppies. His stuttering? Not an issue as long as he speaks mother language.

So I just decided to block the girl and be done with it. It's reasonable out of the situation that, as no longer student of this univeristy, doesn't concern me.

But guess fucking what? That hoe used my face and name in her little group (that my friend is a part of) and in her presentation on *Hatred* towards disabled people. And I'm just at disbelief?

For one, congrats on diagnosing the guy. At least I had the decency to allude and not state it as a fact. While you might not like the joke I made, let's not pretend that jokes are sign of one's rampant hatred towards any group of people. Do you know how many jokes I am cracking about queer people, and especially faggots, within my friend group?

For second, I wasn't hateful toward the guy. I was actively helping him during the class when he forgot a word (Percy, a walking dictionary), I told him a handful of times to slow down and was asking him to clarify his statements during class so people who can't walk up to him and speak his language to him got the memo of any given class. Trust me, there are few professors I'd shove into a locker, knock their books out of their arms or dump a bucket of water on them if I could do so legally. But it's always because they're piece of shit and hateful people themselves, not because they can't get a sentence out in perfect 1800s British. I really have better things to do than bully a guy with speech or anxiety problems.

And lastly, imagine the audacity of accusing *me* of hate criming a guy, when you're actively using my name and face without my knowledge to stir some drama. I don't know what kind of commentary YouTube you're watching, but that's not how any of this works. And what are you even trying to achieve? I'm also ready to share some info about my oc, their name is rin (not sure what their last name is), they were born in ritou, without a father bc he left their mom. it wasn't too long until their mother passed away. they were the only child and it became pretty lonely for them. they got their vision at 14 when their mother passed, they wanted a pyro vision, but they weren't complaing. (that explains why their 5th attack has their bow infused with pyro). soon at 17 they became an adventurer, and went to the inazuma city, hiding their vision on their back. they soon travelled to liyue at 18, and met hu tao. (rin and hu tao are besties btw) and in the picrew I made was based off a scenario I thought of at 3am, where hu tao was playing with rins hair and made it into pigtails so it'll match hers😭😭 the front hair also looked like that before, but rin made a mistake of letting xingqiu cut their hair, so it's kind of chopped up and uneven LMAOO. they still forgive xingqiu bc he's adorable tho

rin also looks at zhongli as their father figure and looks up to him aswell! rin usually likes to cuddle people a lot because they didn't have much affection as a child, so the traveller usually sees rin cuddling with hu tao on her free time, despite being an adult, they act like a child.

after months of being friends with hu tao and zhongli, they befriend half of liyue, and even go out on adventures with the traveller.

rin is also best friends with paimon.

for their personality, rin is overall a nice and approachable person. they can get scary if you anger them too much. they don't get angry that easily though, so if you try annoy them, they don't really mind. they're also pretty shameless, so if they say something, they're speaking what the first thing pops up in their mind. you can literally say “I don't like ningguang” and rin will say “in my opinion, shes hot” in front of ningguang.

rin LOVES animals, and they adore liyues dogs. like if they come across an animal, they'll immediately pet them.

if you travel to mondstadt with rin, I headcanon timmies birds will not fly away. if rin steps in front of the birds, the birds won't fly away but make space for rin.

I agree that the Republicans were wrong. They should have voted on him. They had the majority so they could have just voted no. What they did was stupid. But they didn’t try to destroy his life. They didn’t find people to accuse him of sexual assault or child molestation or sexism, racism, homophobia and whatever else the left is always accusing anyone that disagrees with them of. They held up his nomination. Political manipulation, yes. The dems would have done the same or worse if they had had the majority under a Republican president. They prove that over and over again. There is literally no comparison to what the Republicans did to Garland and what the Dems did to Kavanaugh, not to mention what they did to Bjork and Thomas years ago. D) Testimony from witnesses is literal evidence. Testimony from the accused or accuser is an account of events. Her testimony cannot be considered evidence because she has to prove that what she said is true. Same for him. He has to prove what she says isn’t true. Anyone can say something happened but without actual witnesses or physical proof it literally is he said she said. E) “Kavanaugh lied about his drinking behavior in the past; he lied about discussing Ramirez's case; He lied about "boofing". “ He lied about his drinking behavior? When? In that FOX interview? That’s not perjury. He downplayed it but he wasn’t under oath. Proof for the Ramiriz thing please. And “boofing”? Lmao. Really? As for the other things you mentioned I don’t remember him being asked about that  I do know he was involved with the Patriot Act and other things that I personally disagree with. If they can prove that he lied under oath then they definitely should pursue it. F) The psych information? Ok, well if she’s willing to share it with the FBI why won’t she share it with the committee? They were the ones investigating this in the first place. You would think she would want them to have that information if it would help prove her claim. Her lawyers told her to withhold it because they know how FBI investigations work. No she didn’t have to hire lawyers unsympathetic to her, but these lawyers are clearly biased with an agenda. The woman defended Al Franken btw and part of her defense was that he wasn’t a senator when the events happened so it shouldn’t be held against him. By her own logic Kavanaugh wasn’t a judge when this supposedly happened so it shouldn’t be held against him. Right? I) Where? Why weren’t they submitted during the committee hearing? J) My point is that people were crawling out of the woodwork to make false claims and then immediately recanted when they found out they might perjure themselves. Well except for Julie Swetnik and her upstanding lawyer that has no agenda whatsoever. K) I did google it. All liberal sources come up of course. Vox, Variety etc. And I read the Newsweek article as well. It really doesn’t corroborate her story. It just shows that he went to some gatherings. The article itself points out that she said 4 boys and the entries always have 7 or more. And when questioned about that she waffled and said she really didn’t know how many. L) I should have said ex best friend from high school. Google Leland Keyser who refutes her story, says she doesn’t even know Kavanaugh, and that she was pressured by another friend of Ford’s ( a former FBI employee who is part of the resistance) to change her testimony to support Ford. Ford also tried to throw her under the bus by implying she has mental issues. M) The FBI had already done 7 intense background checks on Kavanaugh. They had interviewed him several times. Of course he wouldn’t bring something like this up but if any of these accusations were true from any of these women do you really think it wouldn’t come up somewhere? Especially the rape parties which is ridiculous. They didn’t have to interview them because they had their sworn testimonies. The only way they would interview them is if something new came up and they needed more information. N) How was the investigation limited? Seriously, what did you want them to do? They talked to every witness that was named by Dr. Ford and Ms. Ramirez. They did another background check which means they interviewed even more people. Maybe they should have done a background check on Dr. Ford and Ms. Ramirez? O) Ah yes the dems did an investigation. An internal investigation by a friend of the accused. No police or FBI investigation. No demands for a more through investigation. But nah that’s not hypocrisy at all. The dems have had sacrificial lambs step down. People they feel they don’t need anymore. I agree that the Al Franken thing was ridiculous. Ultimately it was his decision. I don’t like him at all but I think he should have fought harder because the whole thing was stupid. Actually the fact that not all dems believe Ellison’s accuser proves their hypocrisy. These are the same people yelling at us everyday that we MUST believe ALL women no matter what. Of course if it’s not politically beneficial to them they ignore it or deny it. They don’t care about all women. They “care” about women who agree with them. Ellison’s accuser actually has proof. So, no them not believing her just shows how hypocritical they really are.  Not complaining just pointing out their hypocrisy. P)You all keep saying this was just a “job interview.” Yeah a job interview that was televised across the country and where the applicant literally had to try to prove his innocence. I’ve never been a job interview quite like that before. If Ms. Feinstein had handled the situation correctly she may have prevented all of this. But of course her only goal was to smear him, cast doubt in the public eye and delay as long as possible. Who cares who it hurts including Dr. Ford. Demeanor? Really? So you’re saying that you would be just fine with having all of these baseless accusations thrown at you? You would be fine with the media literally calling you a rapist without any proof? You’d be ok with your life and your family’s lives being threatened? Your wife/husband and children being harassed? You really think he had no reason to be mad or upset? You could sit there calmly and smile at the 10 democrats staring at you smugly and with hostility telling you straight out they believe her no matter what and no matter what you say you’re guilty? Wow. You’re a bigger or at least less emotional person than most.  My friend, the only ones spreading misinformation is the democratic party and people like you. You people are notorious for lying and changing facts to fit your narrative. The left wing media doesn’t even try to hide their bias anymore. It’s pathetic.
