As a Chinese person from Hong Kong I'm going to officially say this absolutely blows my mind. Here's why.
In the video, Charles and Carlos were plainly copying calligraphy stroke-by-stroke from a large image in front of them. What makes Carlos' attempt so impressive is that he's effectively gotten nearly all the proportions, starting and ending brush pressures and tail-offs, and the structure right. It's not perfect. But it's damn well near perfect.
Compare it to Charles': Charles didn't do a bad job at all, and has successfully copied many of the requisite features, but he has seen each stroke as a line, as many people who write Chinese characters with ballpoint pens do nowadays - point A to point B, with natural loss of shape and flow in between. It's not necessarily a problem. Charles is writing the characters. But interestingly, Carlos isn't writing at all.
On rewinding the video you see why Carlos' was shaped so perfectly. He doesn't know Chinese. He doesn't know anything about stroke order, or speed. But he knows detail.
If you look at his hands as he writes he separated each stroke into a shape. Then he did his level best to recreate each shape as carefully as he could by pressing the brush until he could see it formed the right thickness of the line.
He didn't write, like Charles did. He painted.
If this is how good Carlos is at copying a language he does not know I wonder how amazing he would be at painting if he actually spent time to learn.
#For reference I and a lot of other native Chinese dialect speakers and writers do what charles did#we process the characters as words and the strokes as components of that word and sacrifice specific brushtroke shape#it's one of the first things you have to de-learn if you didn't do calligraphy as a child#seriously as a Chinese person from Hong Kong this is the hottest thing Carlos Sainz has ever done I'm in love#f1#carlos sainz#charles leclerc#charlos#chinese gp 2024#my post#I AM YELLING OK#A recurrent mistake that Carlos made was the angle and continuity of the 2nd stroke of 力#that's his only obvious mistake#but the 觉 blows my mind#and the FREAKING LAST STROKE OF THE 星 RADICAL#HOW HE COPIED THE THIN CURVE OF THE FINAL HORIZONTAL STROKE#I AM LOSING IT AT 1:50 AM ON A TUESDAY MARRY ME

Finally overhauled and updated the Japanese resources page on my Neocities. Added a lot of new things and also reorganized it so that it's a little easier for absolute beginners to get into
#neocities#linkpost#Alllmoooosttt have all the pages updated to the new layout code... Only a couple left...#The JP study page was the most complicated one since I wanted to update the information too#The others just need copy-pasted over but I'm lazy lol#Debated if I should put a warning on the JP study page about how time consuming it is to learn for-#-Germanic and Romance language native speakers especially#But Japanese already has an annoying reputation for being insanely difficult#It really really isn't haha Just very slow learning because of the 300 billion million kanji argh#Ok alright I guess having 4 writing systems is a LITTLE tricky

I keep drinking coffee thinking it's gonna make me Productive and then instead of doing the work I actually have to do I just compulsively make spreadsheets :(
#my homework is. not done#but!!! i just realized if i take 2 spanish classes i can have a russian/spanish major instead of just russian#(it's complicated but this would leave me with: double major languages and history with a joint major in asian middle east studies)#(plus a minor in religious studies and concentration in islamicate studies)#first i gotta: relearn spanish for like the third time#but it's ok i'm hopping thru spain in less than a month so i should proooobably do that anyway#man when i was touring colleges my mom was like really dismissive about the idea of double majoring and now i'm here like#How Many Things Can I Stack Up To Get Big Number On Transcript#aaaaaaaand because of ames requirements i did the dumb thing and ended up learning persian while my spanish is still kinda iffy#итак совершилося то что я пытался предотвратить as they say#so i'm just gonna have to study two languages at once next semester... or just keep going thru the cycle of relearning them abt every year#my russian is a big girl it can survive on its own but i now gotta feed the babiessssss#tho ig what this kinda cyclically learning and forgetting spanish has taught me is like#languages are less like babies and more like those lil desert plants that wither up when they don't have any water#they might look dead but they're nearly impossible to kill completely#and will bounce right back after a lil care n patience. i just gotta like.... water em#the one thing standing in my way is ideological opposition to my spanish textbook#i have to pay $200 for access to a *website*#*i don't even get a book just a shitass ebook*#but it's ok one of the spanish profs likes me i think? i think she would let me skip the intro lit class#only problem is it was Genuinely Hard for me to follow along when i audited advanced lit... 90% of the class was heritage speakers#tho ig like. having taken a class meant for native russian speakers should help w learning to survive that kinda thing#genuinely i think i can do it#just gotta make that my goal. study. do it for zapata#and if i wanna go into translating... having good spanish should help right? like if i finally get b2 spanish?#yeah. if i could do kazakh history for native russian speakers i can do spanish lit for heritage spanish speakers. it's equivalent enough#but ok i'm gonna visit my buddy in spain who did nearly the exact same shitass majors combination as me#tho i think he did spanish/arabic for his language major and just Happens To Also Be Fluent In Russian cuz he's Like That#it's ok he's two years older than me i have two years to become that cool#he can tell me what to do

my wishlist for eventual further qsmp activity is that they're able to make the translations work for voice group calls and show up in the box or something.
yes this is because i'm rewatching purgatory vods again, my main server rewatch got me to the day flippa dies for the first time and i'm SAD i don't wanna watch it :(
just, with purgatory 2 and i'm rewatching bolas with carre as well, like bolas mainly operated in english bc they'd been speaking english to each other for a while and when they needed to coordinate with carre they went quiet so cellbit could talk bc he was their strongest in spanish (those were the few times they ever really shut up in the call lmao) but i'm also thinking about purgatory 2 and how teams that had members who weren't proficient in a common language couldn't use the translations because purgatory teams tended to spend a lot of time split up in the world. i'm thinking about the time bad and brunim were standing right in front of each other and brunim was still asking someone in the call to translate for bad, bc they just weren't able to make much use of the translations so they didn't seem to become habit for the teams.
that's my wishlist. i'm not sure it's even possible with how the voice chat mod they're using works, but i really hope they can figure out how to make that work because that's gonna REALLY help these events be less english or common language dependent. it'll be a learning curve for the players to remember to read the box and it'll probably get messy for bigger calls but the five-six person teams should probably be manageable.
I JUST WANT LESS ENGLISH IN MY MULTILINGUAL MINECRAFT IS THAT SO MUCH TO ASK 😭
#HI I'M VIC I'M A NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER AND I HATE ENGLISH#qsmp#shut up vic#block game brainrot#ok that's an exaggeration i do like my language#i just wish there was less of it on multilingual servers#idk i've said it before and i'll say it again; it bugs me that the translator became a tool that was mainly used by the viewers#anyway. it's tough. i have many thoughts but yeah. i've said them before a lot lmaoooo

I loaf technology
#context: I've been learning japanese for the past. um#*checks date* 2 months or so.. well. there was also one time I started studying then gave up in 1-2 months but I'm not counting that#and it's been coming along but by far my biggest weakness is my lack of vocabulary#I don't find the grammar super difficult but since I only know 800-900 words#(for comparison the average native speaker knows about 20k words)#most of the time that I read/listen to something and don't understand shit it's bc there's too many words that I don't know#I learn 20 new words a day thru flashcards + occasionally pick up some words here and there subconsciously just from watching stuff in jp#(that's also how/why I started watching inazuma eleven recently. and now I know too many fucking soccer terms in japanese)#but still I'm an impatient boy so I was like ok. what if I try to read stuff to pick up more vocabulary#usually this would be near impossible (or rather incredibly tedious) because I don't know enough words to really read anything#and I'd spend forever just looking up every single word that I don't know right#well thanks to the power of technology and a good pop-up dictionary extension I don't have to worry about that#and today I managed to install the extension on my phone too (I didn't know it was possible or else I would've done it sooner)#so now I can read. japanese inazuma eleven fanfic from my phone. lol#it'll still be pretty annoying of course since I'll have to look up MOST words anyway#but at least the process will have been simplified by a lot#anyway. that's why I loaf technology#lucasings

currently toiling under the man-made horrors (studying for an exam whose content i have little to none interest in)
#it's an english phonetics and phonology exam#like i should've known when i started my degree that at least half of it was linguistics-based and not literature-based#but i'm stupid#so here we are#+ my medicine gives me brain fog and i'm having a hard time even trying to understand what's on the page#worst part is that if i was a native speaker then all of this shit would cole naturally to me but it doesn't!!! english is so stupid!!!!#ok bye i need to keep going#the only good thing is that this exam doesn't weigh much in terms of the course's total percentage thank god#come* oops

It is so indescribably frustrating when you are learning a language and as hard as you try, as much as you know, you cannot physically make some of the sounds. It’s so fascinating that our native language actually shapes the structure of our mouth and why can’t my Australian tongue speak Arabic with a perfect accent it’s not fair.
#also trying to let go of some of the fears i have of sounding wrong and instead embracing my own accent in different languages because it's#cute and ok to not sound like a native speaker because i'm not#language#linguistics#mine

wait, it finally clicked why Kirk’s “yes, ma’am” sticks out so much
it’s because everyone else is using “sir”
I assume Kirk (during the call) says it as a way of being polite (but he isn’t from the South - I read it isn’t really very common outside of Southern states to use this), but they’re pseudo-military (they’re navy, yes, I know), and La’an is older and presumably a higher rank, even though they’re both lieutenants (but La’an wears one and a half stripes, whereas Kirk wears just one)
so because everyone else is using “sir” even when referring to women, it just comes across as very old-fashioned (it’s my new favourite thing, actually, Kirk just being all “yes, ma’am” towards Una and La’an lol Maybe the Farragut’s captain is a woman, who knows.)
perhaps it’s just a way to do some kind of a call back to TOS (even though I’m not sure if Kirk ever had an opportunity to use “ma’am”), the same way they had Spock suddenly starting to use “Miss” in the first episode of season 2 that even TOS stopped using
Maybe they just wanted to make Kirk polite in an old-fashioned way.
#ok it's probably just me not being a native speaker lol#but it just sticks out so much lol#therefore i'm definitely gonna use it with kirk#please gentlemen and yes ma'am~#or mccoy has been teaching him manners lol#until contradicted i'm gonna imagine that mccoy is a doctor on the farragut#snw nonsense

[A sad violin song plays over an image of a sad hamster]
Pac: This doesn't have anything to do with me – I wear a blue sweatshirt, you're crazy, this mouse doesn't even have a sweatshirt, this hamster! [Reading chat] Am I a depressed hamster?
[ Transcript continued ↓ ]*
–
Pac: Actually– that's fine! I embrace that idea – of course I'm going to be depressed, are you crazy? [He hits his desk, then starts counting off people on his fingers] Fit is gone, Richarlyson is gone, Ramon is gone, Bagi and Empanada who were always there when we were there are also gone, I haven't seen them! It's just me and Tubbo, and sometimes Philza shows up.
Pac: I lost Chume Labs, I lost the Favela, I lost Murder Mystery, I lost Ilha Chume Labs, it's crazy! Look at how much I've lost, and I've gained nothing! Of course I'm going to be depressed, are you crazy?! How am I supposed to be happy?!
Pac: [Reading chat] "You have us Pac," that's true, thank you. No, that's true, sorry.
* NOTE: Please note that this is an incomplete transcript, as I was primarily relying on Aypierre's translation mod at the time and if I am not confident of the translation, I do not include it. As always, please feel free to add on translations or message me corrections.
#Pactw#QSMP#Pac#March 18 2024#As much as I love keeping people updated about Pac / the other Portuguese-speaking creators#I think I might not make as many transcribed posts for their clips anymore#I just don't think I'm qualified enough to be transcribing things for a language I don't know#like yeah we have the Qlobal Translator and Aypierre's translators to rely on#And I'm always upfront when I'm not 100% sure about a translation#but I've been thinking about it a lot and it kinda makes me feel a bit icky. Idk.#I might be overthinking this but I just I don't want to spread around translations I'm not super confident about#esp. since I know a lot of people cite my clips in analysis posts or link them to other people as resources#and 90% of the time I'm like ''Hell yeah I love seeing people getting a lot of use out of the archive''#but sometimes I get a bit anxious like ''Did I do a good enough job translating this''#''Am I ruining someone's entire perception of a conversation or character because I left one word out or mistranslated something?''#And like I said that's normally not a HUGE concern since if I'm not certain about a translation I just won't post a clip. but you know#idk it might just be the anxiety talking but I really really don't want to spread bad info#Happy to hear other folks' perspective#I'm really grateful for people like Bell and Pix and others who translate clips and I always try to reblog those#but we don't have a ton of people posting clips & translating things on Tumblr since we're so English-centric#which is part of the reason WHY I like sharing clips of the non-English-speaking CCs#but at the same time I want to do an accurate job representing what they're saying#Maybe I'll just start posting things and give a TLDR context of what they're talking about but not a transcript#that way native-speakers can hop in and add translations if that's something they're comfortable doing#and if not then well. at least I'm not sharing something that isn't super accurate#idk I'm just thinking out loud a bit in the tags#But I'm open to hearing other people's thoughts on the matter#Anyways giant rant aside. q!Pac is NOT doing ok rn

Look, so many "rules" that you've been taught about the English language are absolute bullshit that someone just made up hundreds of years ago. They're not inherent to the language, they're what someone decided would make the language sound more professional.
There is actually a group of English rules that were applied because medieval monks were trying to make English more like Latin, because Latin was a respectable language and English was not. But rules like "don't split your infinitives," or "don't end sentences with prepositions" were applied for no reason other than that's how Latin worked, and Latin was cool. Not starting a sentence with a conjunction feels like it came in the same way.
Don't let some long dead dude tell you what is or is not correct in English. If you're a native speaker (or a non-native speaker who is extremely fluent) and it sounds right to you, then it's right.
you can pry starting sentences with 'and' or 'but' out of my cold, dead hands
#as an appeal to authority (as logically fallacious as it may be) my degree is in this#I literally double majored in Linguistics and English#and my specialty in English was history of the English language (instead of literature or creative writing which are what most people get)#it was actually an interesting split because English takes a very prescriptive view on grammar and linguistics is very descriptive#on some days the English training kicks in and I'm like 'but you can't DO that in English'#and on other days the linguist in me takes over and is like 'hmmm non-standard but if a native speaker is doing it then it must be ok'#clearly the linguist is in charge today#but seriously#there was a whole movement to make English more respectable in some circles because at the time it very much was not#Latin for church stuff and most scholarly work#Greek for the rest of scholarly work and philosophy#French for trade and politics#Germanic languages (which English is) were for northern barbarians#and the decision was that the best way to make English respectable was to import a bunch of stuff from Latin

sorry if this is weird but seeing you reply in an actually normal and peaceful manner to a frankly very fucking rude set of tags has been an insane breath of fresh air in internet discussions to me 😭 i miss when pointing out someone is being rude and should just go have a good day seemed to be way more of a norm than it is now. anyway hope you have a wonderful day and less rude tags!!
aww???? thank you, anon! it's not weird at all, I'm glad you appreciate that!
I just wanted to say I somewhat agree with the specific set of tags you're referencing - I am indeed sometimes stupid (who isn't?), this specific post of mine was also stupid. but this is my corner of the internet in which I can be stupid about stuff I like whenever I want it/need it. I think publicly posting something unserious and not well thought out is not, like, a crime (as long as it doesn't actually hurt anyone in real life, obviously).
and I actually don't regret not keeping my mouth shut when I made the og post because for some reason so many people came and talked about it OR things adjacent to it. I got fic recs out of it. I got new headcanons. I've actually LEARNT SOMETHING NEW. how cool is that??
one person showing up and being slightly rude doesn't undo it in the slightest :3
oh, and i hope you have a wonderful day too <3 your message was like a tiny ray of sunshine on this cold winter night and I really appreciate it!
#and i genuinely wish them a good day. like. seriously#detecting someone's tone (esp a stranger's) through the internet is fcking hard.#it's twice as hard for someone who's not a native english speaker (like me)#so i usually just assume people aren't being mean on purpose (until they *directly* tell me otherwise)#in this specific case.... i just wasn't thinking too deeply when writing my post#and i suppose that person wasn't thinking too deeply (about the implications and how it may sound) when they tagged it like this.#and i'm honestly okay with that#it's the internet after all; everyone has an opinion on everything and clashes are unavoidable#so imho we all should either keep to our own bubbles... or be gentle with each other when we actually clash!#(and if the other person won't be gentle then I'll try to be. maybe i won't always succeed but I WILL always try.#after all if i want to live in a nicer world i have to start building it myself!)#..........ok that's enough ranting in the tags lol

I wish I was a native English speaker and wasn't born in this country in the first place. (the country itself is not the issue, it's the government)
#I mean#I would've loved to be born in like Helsinki or tallinn or something#because Europe is better than here#but I also would love to write in English without overthinking everything#and checking words and wondering if what I wrote is OK#native speakers know so many phrases that I don't#and that don't even come up to my mind#personal#sometimes I read those books and I kinda envy the way they know the language#so easy yet so efficient#being able to knock people out with your writing with such simple words#being able to describe so much in so few words#*deep sigh*#not to mention that I wouldn't have such a horrible accent I'm ashamed of#a girl can dream

#The lyrics FEEL it doesn't matter if they make sense
This is like 90% of the music i enjoy
Ok am I, stupid or do a fair portion of the lyrics to Kiss From A Rose just not make any sense at all
#when people complain about music from artists with english as a second language#and I'm like NO#Take on Me means something completely different than Take Me On#and a native speaker would never have found that#the one exception is artists who you can tell are trying to be too clever#then i will absolutely go after them if they're giving me bullshit#ok sorry turns out i have a lot of opinions on this#music
