Reigns’ Girl
Chapter One : At First Glance
inspired by the movie Miller’s Girl and song Teacher’s Pet.
warnings ; 18+ only, smut, intimate & heavily erotic scenes, teacher x college student plot, angst, thriller, obsession, drug use
The world of writing is something incredible, isn't it? The way words can fit together so flawlessly and draw you in to the scene you're seeking for with every word you read. So incredible, you are unable to shift your focus away from it. It's almost—what's the word?
Ah. Pulchritudinous.
In other words, the world of literature is breathtaking and heartbreaking. In a favorable or unfavorable way? Who knows? It depends on how the individual perceives each word they read and how they interpret the meaning contained inside those words. Interesting, right? It's like a billet-doux, a love letter for bibliophiles.
With my brain clouded with thoughts, I enter the classroom of the professor recommended to me by a close friend. Mr. Reigns. Full name, Roman Reigns.
His back was turned to face me as he wrote the task list on the blackboard in white chalk, and I took advantage of the opportunity to let my sight roam down his obviously muscular physique. His shoulders were huge and broad, almost splitting the shirt he was wearing in half. His waist was small but not petite, just ideal. And his hair was bound in a loose bun, every strand.
“Hello? You’re early.” I heard a deep, oh so deep yet silky voice speak, and I was abruptly pulled out of my own little world of borderline infatuation.
My eyes shifted away from his frame and up to his own gaze. His expression was a combination of perplexity and interest.
“Only by a couple of minutes.” I respond with a little, shy grin upon my lips.
The spacious classroom grew quiet for a moment as the two of us were stuck where our feet stopped us, like our shoes were superglued to the hardwood flooring. Mr. Reigns eventually took the initiative, clearing his throat as he set the chalk in his palm down and stepped down from his desk to the one I was stood at, designating it mine as I placed my books and materials on top of it.
"You're new to this class. What's your name?" He inquires, laying a paper on my desk that calls my attention, my curious gaze drawn to the vast list of books and classroom rules. "Ah, I hope this isn't too overwhelming. It contains a list of books that I require my students get familiar with."
I tilt my head, nod gently, and delicately touch the antique wooden desk beneath my fingertips.
"It's Lilith. Lilith Dumas, and I’ve read them all."
He looks at me with a tinge of amazement and some disbelief.
"I mean the books, Ms. Dumas. Not the syllabus-"
I cut him off, causing our sentences to overlap.
“I know. I'm telling you, I've read them all.” I say matter-of-factly.
The corners of the man's lips lift for a second before dropping, only to rise again as he laughs briefly. I'm assuming he's impressed. A nineteen-year-old girl has read over twelve literary works, and he'd be terrified if he was aware of any more than that. How can a girl my age have so much free time, given her youth? I'm certain that's the precise question on the tip of his tongue, but he doesn't want to pry into the life of girl in her first year of college. I know.
“Ok. Impressive.” He praised, a hint of a smile still lingering over his lips.
“Well, uhm..” He claps his hands together awkwardly, looking down at his feet before looking back up at me. “I hope you enjoy my class, Lilith.”
Yes, say my name again. Please. Oh, please.
“I know I will, Mr. Reigns.” I reply, my tone surely dripping and drenched with seduction, even in the slightest.
Fighting back a smile and a burning blush hot to the touch, I settle at my desk as the rest of the class rushes in. My little hands brush over my short skirt as I cross my legs, but my gaze is fixed on Mr. Reigns, who is staring back at me after observing my silky legs alter their position. My brows raised briefly in response before the man turned away from me and proceeded with instructing the class.
It was only our first time meeting and this man, Roman Reigns. Mm, even his name feels like honey on my lips, and I want to yell it at the top of my lungs. Yell it out of love and desire!
I'm not well over my head with this; my mind isn't in the clouds, and my feet are firmly planted on the ground. This is reality…
My reality, at least.
As wrong as it is, as dangerous as it will be. I want this man. It’s not okay, it’s crossing a line and it’s riskier than who knows what.
But I made up my mind anyway, made it up at first glance and I promise, I’ll get what I want.
No matter the lengths.
Thank you for reading! Chapter two will be up hopefully tomorrow!
In the meantime, send in some requests and if you'd like to be tagged in this series and many more works of mine, don't be afraid to let me know.

Sketches and commentary on the Folly ref sheet for RAT's newest plush! (info below the cut vvv)
(note: RAT commissioned me to make the character ref sheet, which is NOT the plushie schematic that Makeship actually uses as reference to produce the plushie)
This is the first sketch we sent to Makeship!
I'm starting to add details to push Folly's identity a bit more and differentiate her more from RM (Rat Maid), i.e. neckline, nose, gloves, blush. Lots of curves! (And I also added two rats instead of one <3O~ <3O~)
At one point we considered giving her the eye design shown on the right (red thread embroidered around her eye) as a reference to her MC skin's glowing eyes, but we decided eye shadow was a better look. also it looks like sans undertale
This is the back! The Folly skin has a long pretty bow, but it's scrapped by the end because A. her hair obscures everything on her back and B. as we went along we increasingly afraid of the sheer mass of fabric building on this plushie.
Most of her palette is colorpicked from the original minecraft skin by Arathain (who also made RM!) but iirc we made the ears pinker and lighter. You can see their OG tweet featuring the Folly skin here!
Onto the dress design!
RAT wanted the Folly plush to feel like more than just a recolor, so he had me redesign her dress. I started off with an inspo board focused on elements we wanted to keep-- Folly's lighter palette, the middle slit of her dress, the off-shoulder straps, and the overall maid theme.
You'll notice that Folly's expressions here are kind of all over the place (I don't think she's ever looked that sympathetic in her life). I think I made these sketches before I finalized her face, where RAT requested some mixture of murderous intent with mischief, but in a subtle way. Later down the line the specific smirk Folly has actually gave the physical plushie a lot of trouble (faces do not scale easily on cone shaped snouts).
The first alternate dress designs!
RED: RAT (paraphrased), PURPLE: me ofc More refined sketches! As you can see here RAT's working me to the bone with all of his requests. It's okay though, b/c after I sent him the completed ref sheet I got to watch him turn on Makeship. (KIDDING, KIDDING)
Overall, I was looking for a dress that felt regal, beautiful, and unconventional, while still feeling like a maid dress. Wow, after physically typing that out I feel like face palming. "I need a dress for a GODDESS also a uniform good for housekeeping please" (???)
After feedback, I focused more on variations of the 2nd option.
You'll see at the last Folly, I combined the 2nd variation with the tie ribbon, the layered dress design, and long puffy sleeves. I decided to bring over the long puffy sleeves specifically because I hoped that they would give Folly a more interesting silhouette that of course contrasts with RM.
(To be fair, this contrast isn't very visible on the plushie itself but it is fun to draw.)
And finally, the second and last ref we sent to Makeship!
imo Makeship did an INCREDIBLE job translating the design to plushie!! I'm sure there's plenty of challenges Makeship's plushie makers have to deal with that we don't see, so I always specify that I'm only responsible for the initial drawing when people ask me if I "made" the plush.
One really delightful surprise were the 3d rats; we didn't think they were possible but they were (ilu makeship)!! You'll probably also notice that Folly's eyes look pretty different--- they were changed slightly in each step and ultimately ended up softer, which is interesting because I feel that it kind of mirrored how RAT's approach to Folly as a character changed in the months of the plushie's development (and up to her release!).
And that's all I have for my part of the plushie! I always love working with RAT on projects and plushies are a highlight. They're especially surreal to think about when we all used to joke about them before RAT really blew up.
ofc, the shill if you want to get her: Makeship Folly plush and RM's ref sheet if you're curious: Rat Maid plushie ref
i think the campaign ends about October 7th, 2023, but you and i are very likely to be in different time zones so if you're interested doublecheck with the site. if the date has long past then ig this is just a fun little time capsule for you, which can also be pretty cool :)

Would it be wrong to ask for a pt2 to the vampire actor thing? Cause he's incredibly hot
Refusal
Took me a bit to figure out what I wanted for this, but I think I'm happy with this idea.
Part One
Vampire!Actor x GN!Reader, TW: slight tantrum Words: 793
You could not sleep all night, pacing around your room as you wait for anything positive to happen. It’s a bit ironic seeing the windows covered in iron grates, considering that they’re used usually to contain vampires themselves, although it does make you wonder if you’re the only person to be held in this room. The wardrobe is stocked with old fashioned clothing of many styles, and part of you feels a bit like a dress-up doll. Your body tries to collapse from exhaustion once morning comes, but you’re determined to stay awake and glare down your captor at breakfast.
There’s a quiet knock at the door, and the butler you learned to address as “Benjamin” opens the door slowly.
“Good morning, breakfast is prepared. Did you sleep?”
“No.”
“I don’t believe the master of the castle will be pleased to hear that, but I’d rather you hear that from him than interfere with your interpersonal affairs. I am simply here for a job. Well, up we pop then, your presence has been requested.”
“I’m not going.”
“...I will relay the news.”
He disappears behind the door and you resume your sulking, sitting up on the floor. You hear distant yelling, followed by running up the stairs. The handle rattles as he struggles to open it, eventually busting it open and looking completely disappointed in you.
“And who are you to deny a formal request to be joined at breakfast? First you break into my house, then you don’t sleep, and now you refuse my food! I am trying to be nice! I could drain you right now and no one will ever find your body!”
Mark just looks at you expectantly, waiting for an answer. The directness of his statement kind of jarred you, not making you realize how much mercy you may actually be experiencing right now.
“I will… be right down…”
“Thank you! Apparently it’s just far too much to ask your home invaders to be a decent house guest. Motherfucking shit, you fucking egg.”
He storms back out of the room, robe flaring dramatically behind him. Benjamin peers his head in, looking at you a bit sheepishly.
“Apologies, but my loyalties are to the master first, and there was no way that the day were to continue without his… outburst.”
“Do you actually enjoy working for him? Living up here?”
“To be honest, it’s better than the life I led before approaching him with my services. There used to be more staff, but they’re all gone now.”
“Did he eat them!?”
“No, they simply retired due to their old age. I took the route of vampirical infusion, so age is less of a problem for me.”
He pulls up his lip to the side, revealing small fangs.
“Well, I shall leave you to it. I do suggest changing into something else, those will be far more comfortable in the long term. Leave your washing in the bin over there and it will be laundered for you.”
“Umm… thanks?”
He departs without another word, softly closing the door. You look in the wardrobe, finding some combination of clothes that fit your tastes. You don’t quite know how to get it all on properly, and your sleep deprivation is certainly not helping with your coordination. Once dressed, you exit to the downstairs banquet hall where Mark is waiting for you. He looks up from his scroll, and absolutely beams when he sees you.
“Oh do you like them? I haven’t touched those in ages. A bit too outdated for my current tastes by a century or two. But I’m so happy to see them be worn again!”
You open your mouth to speak that it was Benjamin’s idea, but a finger to Benjamin’s lips and a wink makes you reconsider.
“I haven’t really worn clothes like this before, so I’m not particularly sure I’m styling these correctly.”
“Oh nonsense! A bit of tweaking here and there can be done, but it seems like for the most part you have them on as their designs intended. Here, let me help.”
He rounds the table, straightening your shoulders and adjusting your clothes without a second thought. It’s rather strange feeling his hands on you, adjusting your clothes and really making you feel like a dress-up doll. When he finishes, he stands back and clasps his hands.
“Much better! Although we’ll have to do something about those eye bags… a matter for tomorrow. Eat up, Benjamin’s cooking is rather worth it, one of many reasons I quickly agreed to turning him when he requested it.
“You’re too kind, sir.”
“Nonsense! Now everyone, eat!”
He’s a bit bossy, but honestly, you’ve been hosted by worse people. You just hope it doesn’t go downhill from here.

Hello! Since you sent me an ask, I’d like to return the question.
Speak freely about Break please! I love reading your opinions on things, so I’d love to see more of your opinions on him. When/Why/What exactly do you love about him? ❤️
OOOOOOH BOY! Permission to yap about Break obtained!
Cracks knuckles...
Actually...
Cracks them extra hard!
Alright, here we go!
With Break, it was honestly love at first sight. I fall in love with design first and then personality once the series goes on. So how it happened was, this person in a Blue Exorcist server (back where I was hanging out with my first husbando, Mephisto Pheles), just casually dropped the question, "hey, do you know Xerxes Break from Pandora Hearts?"
When I said 'no', he sent me fanart of Xerx, Meph and the Undertaker, and he said that he could see Meph and Xerx getting along and he'd love for me to draw them drinking tea together or something.
Now, knowing nothing about this character, I was like, "well, if he'd get along with Meph, then that means he's oughta be a cool dude!" So while I could not draw a character I was unfamiliar with, I decided to check out the series, solely based on the fact that Xerx looked interesting from that fanart, and someone asked me to draw him, so I felt obligated to do him justice.
Picking up Pandora Hearts, I figured I'd be interested in the plot, but man, I was not prepared for just how much this combination of lines will take my breath away from his very first appearance. I was extremely looking forward to finally see him in action, and boy did he not disappoint!
After that, I will admit, the entire plot of Pandora just kinda went over my head because I was just looking forward to the next time he would show up.
Now, I have loved characters before. (My 100+k word fic about Meph is testimony to that..). HOWEVER. I have never purely and utterly fell madly in love with them to the point of letting them consume me and become my entire personality. I was sure I'd just dip my toes in the PH fandom and quickly come out, but a year later I'm like somewhere in the bottom of the ocean still absolutely swimming in the same feelings from when I first fell for the character.
So that was the initial "holy shit" moment. Literally just love at first sight, with no hindsight about anything, just... pure devotion right out of the gate.
So now imagine how those feelings just kept getting intensified the more we found out about Break.
Now, I love my goofy silly characters, but I love them strong, and I love them even more when they have emotional depth. My friends keep laughing at me saying "you always fall for the villains" (see Meph and Hisoka), but I mean... not true? Xerx just falls into this certain type like the other two where he's morally grey, but ultimately, far from a villain, and actually provides a lot of support for the main cast. Like, good luck trying to imagine PH without Break. They'd get nothing done.
So not only is he morally grey, just a guy with his own agenda that helps the main guys, he's also super bloody strong, with a mysterious past, a layer of masks, and just a silly little guy at the end of the day. What's not to love?
It was incredible to go on this journey with him when we find out about Kevin, about what actually motivates him, what he used to be like, getting glimpses into his soul where he's extremely self conscious. I love that emotional depth to him. So he's not just a silly little guy, he's an amazing lil guy that you just want to squeeze and kiss all his troubles away because you grow to learn that he deserves that.
I love that he ends up smacking some sense into some notable characters like Gil and Vince. I love that so much about him, that he's a catalyst to their own growth. He used his shitty past experience and not only grew from it himself, but also taught others how to grow as well. He's just amazing like that.
At the same time, we know his past, we know he went on a murder rampage, and we're shown that he's no stranger to inflicting pain on others for his own entertainment. That's the kinda darkness I enjoy in a character, so he's not all sunshine and rainbows. No, that's main character shenanigans. As a secondary character, HE gets all the cool character development and dark attributes that are just inexcusable.
(I mean... with him though, I'd totally excuse any of his behaviours, see little comic I drew below for proof) I know killing people is wrong, don't come at me! Not my fault he looks like a snack while he does it...
The more we found out about him, the more I was like, "this man just cannot stop getting better and better..."
His nonchalance regarding his health drove me absolutely wild. I just wanted to shake him and slap some sense into him, but it honestly tore at my heart. And at that moment I realized just how attached I was to him truly.
I believe that's around the time I might have started drawing him... I just... could not get enough of him.
Not to mention that he just kept looking better and better as the series went on, thanks to Jun's style improvement.
I mean, he went from this janky looking fellow:
To this absolute darling:
And there is no better word to describe him other than "darling" because he's so sweet, and he's so caring, and he's just so good, and wise and strong, I wanna weep when I think about him because he's just too gosh darn perfect!
And weep I did when he died. Frankly, I was in denial up until the very end, and to this day I choose to live in blissful ignorance of his demise.
As a grown woman, it was most certainly not okay for me to be weeping in the shower that night over him and cry on my drive to work the next day. The level of attachment to this man is just beyond me at this point. It felt like a new low to be googling "how to get over a fictional character's death", but, as a result I ended up creating copious amounts of fanfiction and fanart, just to feel a shred of normalcy that he's alright.
And can we just talk about how wonderful his design is, and how lovely it is to draw him? I mean, from his hair, to his eye, to his clothes, it's all just so perfect, I cannot even begin describing it. It sucks that he's missing an eye, but the bangs add so much uniqueness to him, and that eye style is the most unique thing I've ever seen in my life, and I just love it to death. Not to mention the outfit. Also, so incredibly unique. I just love unique things I guess, and Xerx fits that definition.
All in all, I'd say he meets all the definitions of perfections for me, from looks to back story, character development and personality, he's just... *chef's kiss* perfect! That's why I literally cannot stop drawing him, writing him, thinking about him for a single moment for more than a year now.
I thought it would be just a phase, but... it appears I'm in it for the long haul. I can yap about him all day and all night, and my discord presence is proof of that. As well as my tumblr one I guess... hahah but on tumblr I cannot show too many of my true nsfw thoughts about him, but boy are they ever present.
With that said, this is just a personal headcanon of a delusional fangirl, but I think he'd make a great partner. I hear a lot of people talk about loving him but they'd rather never meet him irl. I dunno... I really enjoy writing and thinking of reader interactions with him (see an entire 5 chapter fic about that). So, I really do think he'd be a fun and silly partner to have, but also one that would know when to calm down and take things slow and easy. Thinking about him that way makes me truly and genuinely happy.
So thank you so much for letting me yap about him. I really cannot get enough of him. He's my everything right now. My precious darling who I just want to hold and cherish forever and ever. He deserves love. I wish more people would give that to him. <3
In conclusion, I love him, your Honour.
#xerxes break#pandora hearts#my thoughts#ask#yapping#can yap about him all day#my blorbo#he's so precious#how can you not love him#best character ever#i love him#pandora hearts fanart#technically#mini sketch#this isn't even scratching the surface of all the thoughts I've had about him over the past year#just so you know#more asks are in order to truly explore all these thoughts

Question 17 please! Also 1 & 11 if you want to keep going
Once again sorry for being absurdly late 🙏
17. Tell me about a monster of the week you think is neat
At some point on this question I felt like handing in my toku fan credentials because while I can absolutely appreciate a good MOTW design while it's in front of me, my object permanence rarely lasts once I'm a few episodes away. And like, there's Metalder with your Bigwaynes and Lortails but that's the obvious one of course everyone is gonna talk about how absolutely insanely good Bigwayne is.
So! Imagine my surprise when Moon Malgam over here ended up staying in my mind permanently ever since its Gotchard episode aired?
I'm a big fan of the Malgam designs in general, and Moon has a lot of the best traits on display. There's a typical gimmick where the arms of the person transforming end up as decoration on the body while new arms split out from the Malgam's power as the suit's actual in-use arms; or they'll do a mix of the two. The chemy is also generally put on in an asymmetrical way with body parts not matching up; Gorilla for instance has the gorilla head upside down on the shoulder and the fist being the suit's head. A lot of this can look like a mess on some of the lesser thought out suits, but I think in general this is a strikingly creative yet simple and effective way of communicating the chaos and discord going on in a Malgam's creation and that it's not something the Chemy involved wants to really be a part of as much as something suddenly borne of instant negative emotions.
Moon Malgam has all this on display in the best of ways -- the person's arms and head are in a sleeping position as assymetrical decoration on the body, with drool from that sleeping person's mouth forming the left arm! The right arm is formed by the night sky and stars seen on the card too!! The one 'conventional' and symmetrical part of the whole thing is that the moon is of course the head, but the crescent moon shape typical of moon characters (including the NemineMoon Chemy itself as seen on its card) is bent into two horrific large rows of teeth biting down on restraints with no other facial features (eyes especially) clearly visible. Add in that this is the first instance of a powered-up Malgam that the Gotchard gang face and that it's designed to homage one of the earliest Goranger monsters, and it's just an incredibly memorable monster to me!
I really really love Gotchard monster design it's honestly one of my favourites in all of Toku. I hope we get to see more of it in upcoming projects!
1. Favourite transforming robo?
So anyway there were other questions here, right? ... and this one's really hard so can I give you a top 3?
I haven't seen GoGoV yet but I've seen enough clips to know that Victory Robo is SUPREME physical prop mecha goodness in action. I love that they found a way to have the mecha form in a practical way which also happens to be really endearing and funny with stuff like the extending arms and Victory Walker; and I just LOVE rescue themes in toku heroes and mecha. Topping it off is just a wonderful solid robo design at the end, and this is really all I can ask for. It's peak platonic sentai robot design to me with a lot of extra flourish
Liveboxer is absolutely none of that. He is a dumb brick formed from two vehicles acting as if it has a robot mode for what is just a glorified upgrade armour for the main robo. And I love him for it. Something about the circumstances of its existence is so fucking ENDEARING to me, his theme song is one of my favourite sentai mecha themes, and the scenes where he's just a big brick with outstretched stick arms flying through the air. Mwah. I love him
King-Ohger has very similar Platonic Ideal Sentai Robo appeals to me as Victory Robo, and while it doesn't have a lot of those same flourishes; it's BUGS, man!! It's bugs!! Rescue themes and bugs are what Tokusatsu was born for! We've of course had a couple secondary robos along the way made of two machines but it's crazy it took us this long to get a bonafide main Sentai mech themed after bugs with 5 or more multi-coloured bugs coming together into a big tough winged horned robot with a giant sword. They absolutely understood the assignment on this one I love looking at this thing
11. Lips on helmets, good or bad?
Gorgeous. Beauty. Perfection.

Tell Me I'm The One You Love
*Song Scenario! Inspired by Pretty Boy | Cavale*
PAIRING. Surprise!Haikyuu character x you (If you don't check the tags first, lol)
GENRE. Pure Fluff
WARNINGS. None.
You stand in front of ornate double doors, fingers loosely gripping the lace wrapped stems of a white lily bouquet, petals lined with silver and gleaming in the low candlelight.
The faint orchestral strains reach your ears from beyond the doors, beginning the opening bars of the bridal march. Attendants on either side of each door swing them open and you take your first step forward.
"You look lost."
You bite your lip and turn your head towards the owner of the amused voice. The halls of your new school are almost empty, the warning bell calling students to their designated classrooms leaving you adrift in a sea of unfamiliar faces as they push and pull past you. The warm, teasing eyes of the boy who spoke anchor you before you're swept away.
"A little, actually," Your smile is filled with mirth, "I don't suppose you could point me to the 3rd year homerooms?"
Your savior swings an arm out, directing you to the left before falling into step beside you, "Why don't I walk you there instead? What class are you in?"
"3-6."
The corners of his lips tilt and twist from that amused smile into a playful smirk, "Stunning and smart. Deadly combination."
Warm eyes hold yours as you step over the threshold, the teasing light still alive after all your shared years. Your lips tug into a bashful smile, unable to resist a response to the compelling call in his own playful, ecstatic beam.
"Forgot my name already?" He leans into you, not quite touching you but incredibly close, head tilting as it passes yours before his lips brush your ear, "Keep it close to your heart from now on, it'll be yours someday."
You're frozen on the outside, holding still to resist the magnetic pull that beckons you to lean into his warmth, as it calls to you with the promise of wrapping you in a safe embrace. You have to close your eyes before you whisper in response, "You shouldn't make promises you can't keep."
He leans back, eyes steady on yours with his promise, "I never do."
Soft petals crush under your delicate heels, releasing their fragrant aroma into the air around you before rising to the vaulted ceiling. You want to look around you, to all your friends and family gathered here to celebrate your special day, but you're unable to tear your eyes away from his. That never changed, not from the first moment you met and were caught by the warmth in his gaze, and never will. You're willingly captive to those beautiful, kind eyes that always seem seek you out wherever you stand.
"I'm in love with you. Say you'll be mine."
Your heart thunders as you fall into the depths of his serious gaze, holding silent promises for your future. The quiet intensity conveying every truth you would ever need to know, his unspoken vows to stand by you, protect you, love you. Forever and always.
"I'm already yours, and always will be. I love you."
His hand reaches for yours as you finally arrive at the raised dais. Curling your fingers around the welcoming heat of his own, you take the three steps to stand before him. Your connection unbroken, you tilt your head and shake it ever so slightly, his smile only growing in response and understanding.
"I have to leave."
"I know." Your smile is sad but understanding. You'll never ask him to put you above his one, true love, "Volleyball is your future, your life."
"You are my life, my future." His hand rests on your cheek, "Will you take another chance on me?""
You hesitate, uncertain if he's asking what you think he is, and he can see that so he asks again, this time directly, "Please come with me. Stay by my side forever."
You don't hear the words of the ceremony, only the words that weave together your history with the man you're marrying today. The memories rush through your head, leaving you feeling like that first moment you met him. Lost in a sea of currents and, as always, it's in the calm steadiness of his eyes that you find a safe, quiet place to breathe.
"..do you take Toru Oikawa to be your husband?"
"I do."
A/N: Had this sitting in drafts because I'd only written it as a warm up during a period of writer's block so now I just can't be sure if it's decent or garbage. Either way, I decided to post it for anyone that might enjoy it, feel free to let me know what you think <3

I'm not sure who to ask this question, and I tried Googling, but came up with no answers. Why is it that iron is so prominent in ASoIaF? There's the Iron Throne, Iron Islands, Ironborn, Iron Price, Iron Bank, Ironwood, etc. So just curious why that's the element GRRM chose to use/focus on so much. BTW, I love all your lovely blogs! 😊
Thank you so much! I love these kinds of questions! We would probably have to ask GRRM to know for sure why iron inspired him in ASOIAF, but we can speculate!
Iron features prominently in folklore, including in-world westerosi folklore: “A child’s rhyme echoed in his head. Oak and iron, guard me well, or else I’m dead, and doomed to hell.” Interestingly, this rhyme is not invoked by any highborn POV, only by Dunk. And Davos remembers something similar: “A knife in the heart, though…even demons can be killed by cold iron, the singers say.” Even lowborn Will of the Night’s Watch, from the AGOT prologue, takes comfort in cold iron.
Perhaps it’s only a smallfolk superstition, but I’m inclined to believe the smallfolk remember a truth the nobility have forgotten. Whether they remember or not, lords often build their gates and doors of oak and iron. For example, one enters the Great Hall of Winterfell by “wide oak-and-iron doors,” big enough to ride a horse through. More importantly, Winterfell is guarded by “massive oak-and-iron gates” though by the end of ACOK they’re hanging “charred and askew”. Combine this with @racefortheironthrone‘s idea that Winterfell was built as an engine to fight the Others, and I think GRRM’s grand design might be getting a little clearer. All the stuff listed here is going to be important in the War for the Dawn:
“Winterfell…grey granite, oak and iron, crows wheeling around the towers, steam rising off the hot pools in the godswood, the stone kings sitting on their thrones…how could Winterfell be gone?”
Winterfell isn’t gone. Just dormant.
Winterfell lies dreaming, waiting to be reborn in oak and iron and granite. There’s magic in Winterfell’s walls. (More about Winterfell here.)
I know you didn’t ask this part, but I think we need to explore the question of “Why oak?” before we tackle “Why iron?” Oak trees represent strength and steadfastness, endurance and long life. The oak is considered a holy tree, closely associated with pagan gods of Northern Europe, and GRRM is aware of this association. In King’s Landing, “The heart tree was an oak, brown and faceless, yet Ned Stark still felt the presence of his gods.” The Ghost of High Heart also associates oak with the old gods.
“Oak-trees have always been regarded as great protectors and guardians of the virtuous.” A fitting tree for Duncan the Tall to be invoking. Arya herself is called an oak tree. The oak has a duality to it, with “deep roots [that] penetrate as deep into the Underworld as its branches soar to the sky.”
“The Sanskrit word, ‘Duir’, gave rise both to the word for oak and the English word ‘door’, which suggests that this tree stands as an opening into greater wisdom, perhaps an entryway into the otherworld itself.” [x]
I don’t know if there will be a connection between oak and the Others, or if oak is just symbolically important in the War for the Dawn, but it will be interesting to find out.
“Of all the trees in Britain and Ireland the oak is considered king” and we know what GRRM thinks of kings: “a king protects his people, or he is no king at all.” Oaks are a popular fantasy element. C.S. Lewis used oaks and other trees to fight alongside the Narnians in Prince Caspian and of course Tolkien had the Ents, some of which resembled oaks. I don’t think GRRM’s trees are going to get up and start walking around, but I think ASOIAF themes support the idea that even the trees oppose those who would seek dominion over you. The Others are certainly seeking dominion over the earth. The walls of Winterfell are going to fight against them, oak and iron and granite, and protect people.
So, what about iron? Because you’re completely right to pick up on the iron motif. GRRM references iron from the very beginning. In the prologue of AGOT, when Wymar Royce battles the Other while Will climbs a tree (not an oak but something GRRM calls a sentinel … which is not a real type of tree but GRRM’s own fantasy brand of evergreen) … Will is mentioned to have “cold iron”.
He whispered a prayer to the nameless gods of the wood, and slipped his dirk free of its sheath. He put it between his teeth to keep both hands free for climbing. The taste of cold iron in his mouth gave him comfort.
He’s unwittingly invoking oak and iron. And remember, the Others leave Will to be killed by wight!Wymar. Could the Others have killed Will? Did Will’s iron make any difference? idk, GRRM isn’t saying, but I hope we get more definitive information in future books. “Cold iron” in literature has historically meant any weapon designed to draw blood, but I don’t know if GRRM is making a distinction between iron and steel.
*****
ASIDE: What is the difference between iron and steel? I didn’t know so I had to look it up:
Steel is a mixture of several metals (this is called an alloy) but most of it is iron and often some carbon. Steel is harder and stronger than iron. Steels are often iron alloys with between 0.02% and 1.7% percent carbon by weight. Alloys with more carbon than this are known as cast iron. Steel is different from wrought iron, that has little or no carbon.
Something made of pure iron is softer than steel because the atoms can slip over one another. If other atoms like carbon are added, they are different from iron atoms and stop the iron atoms from sliding apart so easily. This makes the steel stronger and harder.
Changing the amount of carbon added to steel will change its properties:
Hardness
How easily it bends
Ductility: can it be made into thin wires
Strength
Is it magnetic
Will it rust (or corrode)
Steel with more carbon is harder and stronger than pure iron, but it also breaks more easily (brittle).
Iron is an element and a metal. It is the second most common metal on Earth, and the most widely-used metal. It makes up much of the Earth’s core, and is the fourth most common element in the Earth’s crust.
***
I’m out of my depth here, but I would like a chemist or metallurgist to discuss the potential carbon-content of Valyrian steel and relate that to the fact that all known life on Earth (and probably Terros - with the exception of the Others, probably) is carbon-based, and then tie that into ASOIAF’s life-affirming themes in the War for the Dawn.
something something carbon as a life force in the Valyrian steel being anathema to the Others something something steel made with human blood sacrifice something something…
Has someone already written an essay about this? If so, please link me.
*****
In the meantime, we can consider iron in folklore. Iron is believed to repel fairies. GRRM has said that the Others are like “the Sidhe made of ice” and the Sidhe are the fairy folk of Ireland. So when Westerosi invoke “oak and iron" to guard them, I think this is a remnant of the cultural memory of the Long Night. (I’ve talked about the Others here and in my tag for #the Others.)
(There are other scraps of cultural memory that recall the Others. For example, in TSS, Egg hears vicious rumors about Rohanne Webber from the smallfolk:
“Four,” said Egg, “but no children. Whenever she gives birth, a demon comes by night to carry off the issue. Sam Stoops’ wife says she sold her babes unborn to the Lord of the Seven Hells, so he’d teach her his black arts.”
Obviously these rumors about Rohanne were not true, but demons coming by night to carry off babies is eerily similar to the deal Craster has with the Others in exchange for protection.)
What’s special about iron? Pliny the Elder, who lived in the first century, believed that iron could protect and heal people, and some of these ideas persisted well into the 20th century.
I don’t know if the potential magnetism of iron is important but idk, the heroes probably have to go to the North pole, that might be important.
Also, “iron can attract and conduct electricity, focus and release it, store it as magnetic energy, or disperse it by returning it to the earth. Iron can change form. It can be made molten, fluid, and malleable, and then set into unbending forms of our design.” Considering that ASOIAF is about rebirth and duality and transformation and shapeshifting (please see this post about Tyrion - please click), iron is thematically important to ASOIAF, to our malleability, our rebirth.
Victorians believed that the first iron found was in meteorites. “Of course, even today, iron still seems magical in many respects. It is the most plentiful metal in the universe. All iron was initially forged in the hearts of stars, and only gifted to the cosmos when they exploded in supernovae. This stardust is in each of us; it is what makes our blood red.”
Consider:
Dawn, forged from the heart of a fallen star.
The Daynes of Starfall are one of the most ancient houses in the Seven Kingdoms, though their fame largely rests on their ancestral sword, called Dawn, and the men who wielded it. Its origins are lost to legend, but it seems likely that the Daynes have carried it for thousands of years. Those who have had the honor of examining it say it looks like no Valyrian steel they know, being pale as milkglass but in all other respects it seems to share the properties of Valyrian blades, being incredibly strong and sharp.
The iron content in Dawn is probably important.
***
(GRRM has said that, while the Daynes share the violet eyes of the Targs, they’re not the same ancestry. I’m guessing that Dawn and Valyrian steel are like that too, parallel in their formation but different. (There is a term for parallel evolution in biology but from completely different ancestors. Biologists, help me out!))
EDIT: @victorvontooms supplied the term I was looking for: convergent evolution. That’s how I think of Daynes vs Targs and Dawn vs Valyrian steel, both made to fight the Others but forged completely differently.
***
Also, Tyrion tells us:
Dragonbone is black because of its high iron content
(No one shows the dragon bone in ASOIAF as black!! But it is!! Dragonbone is black!!!
^^Detail of art I commissioned from @bidonica, showing the dragonbone as black!! Will I ever stop screaming about this? No!! It’s my desktop, it’s so important to me!!! Not that I ever see my desktop through my tab forest but it’s the principle of the thing…)
Anyways, “Dragonbone is black because of its high iron content”. If that doesn’t set off the Others’ alarm bells, it should. I really think the Others dislike iron, not just Valyrian steel, and we have these giant high-iron content, fire-breathing beasts coming for them.
In terms of the setting, I think GRRM might be invoking a lot of iron imagery to suggest humanity’s Iron Age, a period that extended into the early Middle Ages in Northern Europe. All this iron carries connotations of a time long, long ago.
TV tropes actually has a great little article on cold iron, suggesting that iron is part of some magic vs technology symbolism.
The Iron Age is generally understood as the period during which the technology to make iron items — particularly weapons — spread from the Hallstatt culture in western and eastern Europe during the 8th century BCE. […]
Clearly, the peoples of this extended period did not one night go to sleep in the Bronze Age and awaken the next morning in the Iron Age. There were considerable overlaps as the technology of iron developed and travelled throughout the European continent by way of trade. This also appears to coincide with a violent period of history, with hill forts springing up all across the British Isles, particularly in the southern regions. […]
The Britons had a reputation for being small in stature yet fierce warriors, and possibly adept at magic. They seemed to be able to appear and vanish at will from among the trees of the forests and among the hills. According to some early Roman accounts, the Britons would spike their hair with white lime and cover their bodies in swirling patterns of blue woad for battle, possibly to enable them to vanish into the pattern of clouds in the sky or reflected on the surface of lakes. This resulted in a belief that they could appear out of thin air and make their getaways via ‘portals’ in lakes and rivers. Some have suggested that this is where the myth of the fairy folk began. These ‘fairy folk’ who used ‘magical’ tactics were armed with bronze, which was no match for the iron blades of the invaders. Therefore, iron became known as the enemy of the ‘fairy folk.’ [x]
I’m not sure that the magic vs technology war applies to ASOIAF (idk maybe it does!) but what I would say applies to ASOIAF is a war between the Old Way and the New, obviously a reference to Ironborn culture, but something I think applies much more broadly to ASOIAF as a whole.
Right now in ASOIAF there is a war between the Old Way of doing things by dehumanization, led by men like Tywin and Randyll and Roose, and the New Way of doing things by valuing people’s humanity, spearheaded by people like Jon and Dany and Brienne.
So people paying the iron price in blood, sitting the iron throne … I think that’s all representative of the Old Way, something outdated and tired and without forward motion or progress. Something that is (hopefully) on its way out.
Just as the early Britons’ bronze swords yielded to iron, I think we’re witnessing in ASOIAF the iron Old Way (metaphorically) yielding to … I don’t know yet…kindness? valyrian steel? idk, ask me when the books are done.
Whatever it is, we have to be careful. Iron can be a force of good (repelling the Others), but it can be terrible too. We have to be careful. Because the iron is in our blood. The potential to dehumanize is inside all of us; as Professor Moody would say, “Constant vigilance!” Or as GRRM might say, the war is inside us. We’re all capable of great acts, and terrible ones. We have to choose. And we have to be careful.
*****
“There are more esoteric explanations, like iron being seen as the lifeforce of the earth, or associated with lifeforce because blood smells like iron.“
“All iron was initially forged in the hearts of stars, and only gifted to the cosmos when they exploded in supernovae. This stardust is in each of us; it is what makes our blood red.”
The War for the Dawn is a war between life and death … a war between life and something worse than death.
It’s a war for our humanity, it’s a war for the earth itself. It’s a war for our flesh and blood and bone.
I said … way up above now … I said the trees are fighting for us against the Others’ dominion. Not the way Tolkien’s trees fight, but still they’re fighting.
GRRM likes to trick casual readers into thinking his world is nihilistic … but deep down, it’s not. The Magic wouldn’t have saved Daenerys from the flames if it was truly uncaring.
In this war, (almost) everyone’s pulling for us, I think. We’re all in this together. The weirwoods and the ravens and the Children of the Forest and all the elements of life, all the way down to the iron in our blood … it’s all rooting for us. Winterfell is rooting for us, with its fires deep within the earth and its life-giving waters rushing through its walls “like blood through a man’s body” and the earth is rooting for us, lending us its lifeforce of iron to oppose the Others.
But we have to stand. We have to fight for it.
*****
So there’s lots of possibilities right now in terms of what Iron means as a motif. Ask me again when we have more books and maybe I can talk more.
PS - I think those bankers are gonna fuck people over in twow. Watch out for them. This might be my Lannister bias tho.
EDITED TO ADD:
@essayofthoughts replied to your post:
Iron swords were the first really meaningful weapons (bronze dulled too quickly) and would sometimes by ritually broken and sacrificed due to their value. An iron or steel sword that has been used and let get rusty, when polished will “bleed” the bloodiron back out.
Oak and Yew have significance as life/death dichotomies in tree folklore. Without English Oak the British Empire and Navy wouldn’t have happened. Oak mistletoe is sacred bc Oak as a hardwood would almost never grows mistletoe, also ties into its status as kings of the forest. Oak once cut and aged is one of the hardest woods out there and even a modern steel knife can’t easily cut aged oak (speaking from experience; my home is made with century old oak beams). Oak also ties to dryads and hamadryads - life from trees in myth -and technically all dryads are of oaks. idk why but the dryads thing makes me think of the children of the forest
@nobodysuspectsthebutterfly replied to your post:
re the first war against the Others– the First Men didn’t have iron as such, they were bronze users. Iron and steel only came to Westeros in sufficiency with the Andals. (Possible proof of the theory that Ironborn are not First Men, but from somewhere else? As their islands are a great source of ore.) What little iron the First Men had was rare and treasured, almost magic to them probably. See Jon’s description of similar among the wildlings today (including the bronze-working Thenns).
Think of the First Men fighting the Others with their bronze, failing. Except for the few who have help from the CotF and are using dragonglass too. And the very few with their rare iron, they must have considered it magic– no wonder it became part of a crown! And then the Last Hero somehow got a sword of dragonsteel– even more magic–and saved the world.
Though interestingly the Others may hate cold iron, but it can’t kill them. See them checking out Waymar Royce’s sword before approaching him, it’s only regular steel. Iron defends, but dragonsteel, Valyrian steel, that’s the game-changer.

Always incredible writing! Can't get enough of your storytelling and I'm sure many others can agree. Keep up the amazing stories. Prompt idea for ya since I've just been Netflixing tons of movies after work lol: Movie Tulip Fever, oldtimeAU Beca is a lowly painter who has been hired to paint a portrait of a wealthy man and his new much younger wife. She has married him to support her family. They fall in love. Btw the movie was pretty shitty lol, but I thought it would be a fun/diff idea for ya!
[A/N: Thank you so much! This movie would have been so much better if it was gay… Anyway, this is a big prompt so I could only fit so much into it. This is longer than I usually do. So if you guys want to see a part two, send me an ask about it!]
The candle gave a soft light to the crowded room. It was an arc of brilliant yellows that was cut with a horrid orange. However, the two colors worked together in an almost therapeutic way- one tiny combination of wax and wick giving a new life to the smallest room in the house.
That was no feat; the mansion was massive- coated in royal reds and cobalt blues. Nothing was spared when it came to Garret Beale. His family being ahead of all the trade on their small island- often taking a page out of the colonist’s books and resorting to working with the men of the sea. Men who pillaged and brought back three times what this home was worth, only keeping a small portion of it to get the great law of the king off their flame-heated trails.
He was a handsome man, one with charming stature and the best-assembled clothes. Garret carried himself as such- royalty that didn’t have a true bloodline, but enough to get everything he desired. Including the woman who stood with a hard stare in front of him. His deep Irish eyes were scanning over her figure, taking in the small stature that she carried. In fact, she reminded him of one of his men; not a nationally regarded painter.
She wasn’t traditional, a pair of grey slacks and a black shirt hugged her figure, her eyes almost as dark as the midnight sky. Different colors of paint popped against the fabric; it made her look more like a street beggar than anything. But he had seen her work- seen the way she made use of the canvas and vibrant colors given to her. She was an artist, one like no other.
“I’ve seen your work,” Garret said, quite dramatically as he leaned backward in his seat. It creaked and groaned in irony. A man with that much wealth should have a better place to sit. Maybe there was some semantic value, but the woman didn’t question him. Instead, she lifted her chin, keeping her jaw tensed. “it’s good.”
“Just good?” She finally spoke, lifting her eyebrows. She leaned heavily on his hand-crafted desk, annoyance sparking within her stomach. He had more money than he knew what to do with; Beca running her fingers over the carved edge. It was done well. Better than his chair. “I mean no offense, Mr. Beale, but I have spent years studying under masters of artistic ability. You’ve pulled me from sea two weeks ago, for what? To design your walls?”
“Garret, please.” He seemed unphased by her annoyance. The man knew that she wasn’t happy, practically being pulled onto his family’s property. She agreed, having to travel weeks to even get to the home. He offered up a project, one that peaked her interest. “If I wanted to have my walls recolored, I would not send word for you, Miss Mitchell, have a seat.”
She drew in a soft breath, that skeptic look still in her deep stare. However, she eventually lowered herself into the chair pushing at the back of her legs. It was cold against her spine, making her swallow back a shiver uncomfortably. She waited patiently, despite questioning the man’s privilege.
“My wife,” he drew in a long breath, “She is quite exquisite.”
Beca pressed her lips together in a frim line, instantly finding discomfort in the man’s words. The whimsical look in his eyes solidifying just how much he cared for this unnamed woman. A small smile played at the corners of his expression. “I have yet to find someone who is talented enough to capture her beauty, which is why I called you.”
“To paint her?” She eased out, “I paint what I feel, Mr. Bea- Garret.” She corrected herself last minute. “There is no rhyme or rhythm to my work. It’s near impossible for me to construct something when I feel nothing.”
“Ah,” he leaned forward, pressing his elbows against the desk. “I assure you, Miss Mitchell when you see my wife it will be highly unlikely that you won’t feel a thing.”
She gave him a jarring look. This man was quite clearly in love with this woman. So much so that he would invite a near stranger into his home to paint a fine picture of her. He had apparently done so before, many times, but was never happy with the outcome. Men, she was sure, men who drooled and didn’t focus on the task at hand. Maybe that’s why he hand-selected her. It couldn’t’ just be based on her work. He was a picky man.
“Are you insisting that I should fall for this woman?”
“No, of course not.” He waved his hand dismissively “I merely suggest that you form a bond with her before you even sit down to draw your first stroke. I’ll pay for it all.”
She lifted both brows, her head resting on her hand as she kept her fingers on her lips. She watched him carefully. “How so?”
“You can stay here, for as long as you need. I certainly have the room to spare.” He stated plainly. “I just require that you spend time with my wife enough to know exactly what I need to be portrayed in her portrait.”
“Her essence,” Beca said as more of a statement than a question. “Not just the way she appears to the human eye.”
It was interesting, something Beca had never done before. She was more into taking an edge of charcoal and sitting on the bow of a boat- sketching the way the waves ate at a flat-lined shore. But if this woman, whoever she was, took so much captivation from the world, then it would be a certain challenge.
“Do we have a deal, Rebeca?” He held out his pale hand, firm and strong.
“It’s Beca.” She took his grasp in hers, squeezing it with force. “And how could I say no?”
The warm spring day changed the atmosphere in the usually dark house. There seemed to be no such thing as vibrant yellow, and unforgivable violent the night before. Beca having an uneasy sleep in one of the cold master bedrooms. It was far from comfortable- but still too fancy for her taste.
She woke up to a long ray of sun pressing against her gaze, birds chirping incessantly on the balcony. The stone balcony that was warmed by the very star that stirred her from her snooze. Regardless, she pulled herself from the clutches of the duvet, flinching as her bare feet hit the cold floor.
Begrudgingly, the talented artist slid on a pair of black pants and a loose fitting white shirt- not ever bringing more than that with her. She was fairly simple, hating the wire corsets and edged dresses of the time. They were too heavy and nice for her to paint in.
After lacing up a pair of brown leather boots, Beca made her way to the kitchen of the house. It wasn’t too far, Garret had set the place up like a maze, although, she was at the edge of it. He gave her a half-hearted tour before fleeing from the property himself, claiming of some business he had to do. It was close to three in the morning, there was nothing he could busy himself with at that hour- but again, the woman didn’t question his generosity.
She was close to the service quarters, residing in the same sector as the staff; she was staff. Having been hired for a job. To paint a wealthy man’s wife in exchange for room and board. Part of her wanted to drag it out to its full extent, the other part hating the idea of spending one more minute in this place.
A sickly-sweet scent coated her lungs the moment she walked into the kitchen. It was large, set up and built like a room from the Spanish colonies; complete with deep yellow walls and terracotta tile with intricate suns and moons. Natural light seeped in from the grassy courtyard. It was good work, just like Garret had said, no expense spared for his family.
There was a woman leaning heavily over a mass of dough, she was tall, almost tall enough to bump her head on the chandelier, it hung low enough. Flour coated her fingers and clothing as a strand of dirty brown hair fell from the bun on her head, sweat forming on the woman’s brow. She glanced up with deep charcoal eyes at the change in atmosphere.
“Oh!” She let her folders fall back, moving her eyes down her smock as a certain heir of heat pressed against her cheek. She reached for a dish towel. “I’m sorry Miss Mitchell, I didn’t see you there. The dining room is right through the left corridor.”
This woman, whoever she was, looked petrified. Like she had done something wrong against the curiosity of the young artist. Beca having noticed the same thing as she cocked her head to the side slightly- like a lost puppy.
“I’m not looking for the dining room.” She stated simply from the doorway, trying not to scare the taller woman off. She was young, a simple look of amusement finding a way to her face. “You know who I am?”
“Of course.” The stranger let out a soft breath, pushing the base of her palms into the moldable dough. “Mr. Beale often hires new artists to tackle capturing the enigma that is his wife. Many of them leave after the first few days. They’re not very social.”
Her slate eyes flicked up towards Beca, almost as if asking a question.
“I’m not either,” She relented, a small smile on her lips. “But I know proper manners. I take it none of them have ever been back here?”
The woman grimaces, shaking her head as she struggles to blow the strands of stray hair from her gaze. She was becoming more comfortable with the conversation, with the presence of Beca in general. This was her kitchen, the woman knew not to overstep her boundaries.
“Never, Miss Mitchell.” She held back a snort. “Wouldn’t give the staff a second glance. A bit like Mr. Garret himself, if I might add.”
“Beca is fine.” The smaller girl said, shoving her hands in her pockets as the woman gave her a kind smile. She was different than the rest of them, actually making conversation and not attempting to rush the other way. She made eye contact and didn’t hold her shoulders along the straight edge of a metal plate. Instead, she looked calm and collected. Strong, even. “And you are?”
“The chef.” She answered on instinct.
“I figured that.” Beca elicited a small laugh. “I meant your name.”
“Oh,” she stilled her movements, a genuine smile finding it’s way to her flour specked face. “I’m Stacie Conrad.”
The Conrad’s were a fun group of people, a family name that Beca recognized almost immediately. She had met a man in the Pacific with the same surname, almost the same features as the chef that stood in front of her; a strong and seducing fella with a great sense of humor. If this woman was anything like her bloodline, Beca would get along great with her.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Stacie.” Beca reached out to shake the woman’s hand, reaching over the island, not hesitating a bit as the taller girl produced a powder covered one instead. She shrugged sheepishly- taking it regardless, Stacie’s mouth falling open. “What’s a little dirt?”
“Ah,” She nodded softly “Miss Chloe will love you.”
“Chloe huh?” The name rolled off of the artist’s lips. It was the first time that she had actually heard it. She was always proclaimed as Garrets wife, or even the woman no one could really paint. But she hadn’t met Beca yet. “Do you have any idea where she is?”
“You two haven’t met yet?” Stacie raised a pointed eyebrow.
“I got in around three last evening,” Beca explained, following that ashy stare towards the courtyard. It was a feat in its own; large hedges shielding the home from the outside world, lush green grass coating the full area, even a tall tree that produced bright fruit like that of a flame. Yellow and sharp. “Mr. Beale took me right to my quarters. After a tour, of course.”
“A fine man that’s proud of his home.” Stacie grimaced, stepping away from her task as she rounded the large counter. She was just as tall as Beca though, both of them turning towards the large doors, leaning heavily against the island as they stared out into the yard, Stacie crossing her arms over her chest. “Every morning, you can find Miss Chloe out here.”
“Reading?” The tiny girl still couldn’t see much but the yard- assuming the woman of the hour was situated on the other side of the large tree, back against the bark as she perused some ancient form of literature.
Stacie scoffed. “You wish.”
Beca threw her an odd glance before turning her attention back towards the area. Struggling to focus her hearing. She had been so focused before- not paying much stock to the little patch of outdoors. She noticed the taller woman first, at least she thought it was two women. Both in form fitted white suits- mesh masks over their faces. Fencing.
This woman who everyone raved bout was battling it out loudly with another, stepping gracefully against the grass, unlike any high-class girl that Beca had seen before. Both grunting as the metal of their foil’s clanked with each fluid hit. The shorter of the two took a step out of bounds, her partner not sparring a second.
“Avertissement” Beca scoffed under her breath, shaking her head.
“Aubrey never plays fair” Stacie spoke without tearing her gaze away from the pair. “I’m sure she does it to keep Chloe on her feet. You fence?”
“I used to.”
The two burst into laughter, muffled by the door that separated their spectators. Each woman panting with a purpose as the taller of the two removed her mask first- face red from the labor as she struggled to catch her composure. Stacie cocked an eyebrow at the blonde, cheeks maintaining their rosy complexion. “That’s Miss Posen.” She informed the small girl. “I swear, Chloe and she are joined at the hip. Protective, that one is.”
Aubrey went to remove her chest guard, but Beca didn’t have the attention span to continue watching the blonde. Instead, she focused on who she deemed to be Chloe. The mask was removed, a bout of coppery locks fell against her shoulders; she shook her head trying to free them from the heat of the island day. Her own chest was heaving, cheeks a bit red as she tucked her weapon beneath her arm. An angelic smile pressed close to her lips, a thin layer of sweat coating her collarbone.
“You’re drooling, Beca.”
“What?” The brunette snapped her mouth shut, dragging the back of her hand across her cheek, checking to make sure she was in fact, not drooling. Stacie was right, she could catch flies the longer she stood there, each passing second, she stared at Chloe made a heat press near her core. “I was doing no such thing.”
“Hmm,” Stacie nudged her new friend. “There is a reason they call Chloe Beale unpaintable.”

Business Card Project - Part 1
Around the time this module started, I got back into contact with someone by the name of Josh Hitchcock who I met and worked with back in college. We met when we were 16 and worked on several projects with each other during our year studying photography together, I learned a lot from Josh and we’ve stayed loosely in contact ever since leaving school but haven’t collaborated on anything for around 5 years despite having always had similar interests, styles and aesthetics. Josh is also still pursuing his passions and talents in visual communication and is beginning to build a portfolio with the aim of applying for a BA, just like I was doing this time last year. Alongside getting himself prepared to do a degree, he has been expanding his online presence and slowly establishing a business and brand identity for himself. He reached out to me originally to ask if I could potentially create him a logo that he could use across all of his platforms which he needed fairly quickly as he was building a website, unfortunately I couldn’t meet the turnaround deadline and so he commissioned someone else to do a logo, later reaching out to me again to ask if I might be able to create business cards instead.
Josh had already started sketching out ideas and so he sent me his drawings as a starting point for the design
After some discussion and a little bit of time, Josh came to the decision that this was his favorite prospective card design and even began experimenting with it's colors.
It was at this point that I asked him to create a Pinterest board to help gather all of the ideas together which he promptly delivered on. Pinterest’s description of the board “Clean, simple doodles. Photography orientated based on nature and ancient art. A perfect combination of tech, nature and aesthetic.” sums it up perfectly. This was a really strong starting point for the overall design as it includes everything from small decorative graphic details such as flowers, vines and suns; to a concise range of colors for the palette of the art itself. The board isn’t overcrowded, it's clearly well thought through and does good job of clearly communicating the kind of style that I was expected to reflect in my design.
Coincidentally around the same time I started this project, I decided to treat myself to an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to support my University work, these have become increasing popular in the art world because they are incredibly powerful creative tools, I chose to invest in it mainly for it’s capabilities in creating digital art using the Adobe suite and Procreate using the pencil which is exclusive to iOS and has is slowly becoming the standard for digital drawings.
Having recently attended the Illustrator workshop, I thought that I would experiment with using this software both on my iPad and computer as I figured if I could learn to use them in conjunction with one another from the get go, I would be in a better position overall later on; but in doing so, I threw myself two learning curves at once as I was not only dabbling in software I wasn’t comfortable with but also using that software on a device that I am a complete beginner to which was a definite challenge for myself.
I started out by doing a Google search to find out what the standard size is for business cards and found out that is generally 3.5 x 2 inches (1050 x 600 pixels at 300 DPI, which is the standard DPI for printing). This is how I decided to set my document up which is what gives me the white rectangular shape that you see me working on to start off with.
To begin the design, I picked out my favorite things from Josh's sketch which were the wavy line details and the bohemian style sun. I created some simple outlines using the line tools on iPad Illustrator starting with the border and dividing horizontal line where I intended the design to end, from this I was able rough out where patches of lines would go and add the sun. For the sun, I originally tried to draw one with wavy points but I was struggling to get it proportionate, even when I'd figured out how to use the reflect tool to make my drawing symmetrical, it seemed to be throwing the design off and so I threw this idea out and went for a pointed sun design instead. I chose triangles for the points as a subtle reference to the exposure triangle which is a rule that dictates camera settings when it comes to photography so it ties in with the business well and was also a concept that Josh was trying to reflect in his logo. I achieved the geometrically accurate shape of the points around the sun by creating the very top triangle and then using the Radial Reflect tool whilst using my iPad which automatically created the rest of the points for me with even spacing and perfect symmetry; all I had to do then was resize the points as I pleased. Once I had done this, I decided to repeat the process but with a small line between each point to give it an extra beaming sunshine look, this also fits in with how some of the sun's and graphics are drawn on the Pinterest board that I'm referring to as I design this.
Once the outlines were complete, I started experimenting with filling in the patches with lines, this is an effect that is featured on the album art of one of my favorite albums of all time, Currents by Tame Impala which I previously learned how to do using a vector pack from Spoon Graphics as I did work inspired by it for my University portfolio. Although I have used these particularly line textures before, I have only used them in Photoshop and not Illustrator so I haven't actually used the vector versions of them up until this point. I inserted these into my work using my computer as that's where they were saved, I was able to use Adobe Cloud to sync my work between my PC and iPad making it easy and convenient to switch between the two whilst working. Adjusting the waves worked similarly to how it does when I use them in Photoshop, I just added them in as a layer and then used direct selection mode to delete the extra lines around the outlines and border that I’d drawn in leaving me with what you see above. At this point, I sent what I’d done so far to Josh so that I could begin to get his feedback and make sure that what I was doing was in line with his vision.
Whilst I was waiting for him to reply, I started experimenting with adding color to the design hoping that it would help us visualize it better; I used colors directly from the Pinterest board for my palette by taking a screenshot of the webpage, opening it up in Illustrator, swatching all of the colors and adding them to my Color Library so that they could be easily accessed whenever I needed them.
At this point, I just filled in the colors according to what made sense to me, blue for the sky, yellow for the sun and something contrasting for the wavy lines, honestly, I chose orange because it’s my favorite color and I really like the way that the purple looks next to it, especially against the blue background where it appears slightly more subtle whilst still being effective at breaking up the image in the way that it needs to.
I continued to add colour, changing every other point on the sun to be red to give it more dimension and incorporate more of the colours from the chosen scheme; I then added green to the bottom section which I chose because I thought it would represent grass and fit in with the sun and sky theme that seemed to be emerging. I also added some small stars as I was experimenting with the shape tools dotting them into some small empty spaces on the design so that they line up in a triangular shape which is another subtle reference to the expose triangle.
Then I started experimenting with adding text and social media icons, Josh had told me that he wanted his name, website and social media information on the card, we decided to leave his phone number out as he only has a personal mobile number and didn’t want to risk handing it out to strangers. I chose this Art Deco style font for the name because I liked the lines in it and thought it went well with the lines in the top half of the design which are probably my favourite thing about it at this point. I didn’t use the same font for the website because it doesn’t look as good when it’s small, you can’t really see the lines and it made the website hard to read so instead I chose this glyph font which I thought Josh would like based on some of the imagery from the Pinterest board; I was unsure about this choice at first but it quickly grew on me as it’s subtle and yet it makes the website look bold on the bottom of the image which draws your eye down to it when you’re reading the information. I also added some social shapes to the front keeping Josh updated on my progress as I went along.
It was at this point that I started to receive some feedback from him, he was really happy with the first impressions of the design but did want to make a few changes. He started out by asking if I could change the green on the bottom to the orange colour in the waves with the hope of giving the card a more uniform look which we both agreed looked much better. He then asked me if I’d started designing the back which I hate to admit that I hadn’t actually thought about at this point and so we started discussing the layout; collectively agreeing to move the social media information to the back of the card and have that there along with some sort of bio which I much preferred the idea of as I wasn’t too keen on how the social shapes looked on the front of the card and I was worried about how I was going to fit all of the contact details on without making it look messy.
Originally we thought it might be nice to add some floral details to the front of the card where the space had now been freed up but we quickly decided that this didn’t look quite right.

hey uh wow same lol but i have this one wip thing that ill never finish from ages ago when a few friends and i were on discord talking about hp aus ft. durmstrang vik and mahoutokoro yuuri??? i hope it cheers you up
{ ao3 }
DurmstrangInstitute is, much like Viktor has repeatedly assured him, beautiful. The castle itself is larger thanMahoutokoro’s jade palace, though Yuuri personally thinks his own school has amore intricate and lovely design, but the grounds are stunning. He doesn’tentirely know where they are, precisely, but the mountains and lakes are sopristine, and oh, the green of the trees against the bright blue sky—
“Appreciating theview?” Viktor asks, drifting almost lazily on his broom with a matching lazy, content smile. Yuuri shifts close enoughto gently bump his shoulder.
“Yes,” he says,“but I wasn’t looking at you, if that’s what you meant.”
Viktorlaughs. “You wound me, dear,” he says, nudging back. “Except not really, because I love that look you get on your face when you’re enjoying yourself. Go on, keep looking around, I’ll keep quiet!”
Suddenlyself-conscious, Yuuri ducks his head as the wind picks up. “What look?” he asks, squinting against thebreeze. It’s cold against his face, and belatedly,he’s starting to realize that maybe an extra layer or five might have beenuseful before going flying up here, but… oh well. It’s too late to go back to Viktor’s room todig through his suitcase now, and a little cold never hurt anyone.
(Besides, it’llbe a great excuse for them to have tea together later, not that they reallyneed one.)
“The one whereyour eyes get all big and shiny and you get that one specific little smile!”Viktor says, leaning forward slightly. He takes one hand from his broom to reach over and touch Yuuri’s lips, just a brush of his gloved fingers, and yet somehow it sends shivers of awholly different kind tingling down his spine. “It’s adorable. Please, ignore myinterruption.”
Yuuri presseshis lips together and puffs out his cheeks, not sure what to say. “I’m not adorable.”
“Should I saycharming, lovable, delightful, or scrumptious instead?” Viktor asks. Yuuri leans to the side and dips into a lazyspiral, curving below and then above him to get a better view of the still, reflective pond they’re flying over. Hissilvery-golden robes (almost pure gold, except for his abysmal marks last yearafter—well. Now isn’t a good time todwell on that) billow out behind him like a cloud, and Viktor’s cape fluttersin the wind, too.
There he is,Viktor Nikiforov in all his pink-cheeked, blue-eyed, silver-haired glory, withthe guts to call Yuuri the charmingone. He shakes his head, scoffing.
“I can’tbelieve the man almost as beautiful as this landscape is calling me pretty!” he calls, swooping into asharp dive, sharp enough that he can nearly reach out and skim his fingersalong the water. The surface ripplesfrom the wind of his flight, distorting Viktor’s reflection as he dives after.
“Almost?”
Laughing, Yuurileans back and starts to climb again, almost but not quite vertical. The thrill of the fall settles in his chest, warm and exhilarating, and he can’t help the grin tugging at his cheeks. “That’s what I said! I’m sorry, Vitya, but these mountains are ina whole other league entirely!”
“You’re morebeautiful than all the mountains and lakes combined!” Viktor shoots back, hisvoice carried on the wind as he ascends too, zooming after Yuuri withease. “So it’s only natural that I’d becalling you pretty!”
“Oh, stopthat!” Yuuri complains, ducking his head again to try and hide his blush. “You big flatterer!”
“It’s notflattery if it’s truth,” Viktor says with a merry smile and a dainty shrug, coming to fly next to him again. Yuurinudges his broom closer, until they’re side-by-side and close enough to touch, their flight slow as they drift on gentle currents like a wide, sedate river.
“Then I have toamend my statement,” he says, reaching for one of Viktor’s gloved hands. “If I’m prettier than the mountains andlakes, and that’s an if, mind you, then you’re much, much more beautiful thanthe entire sky, and everything under it.”
“Oh!” Viktor’s other hand flies up to his mouth, and for a moment Yuuri worries he’ll fall from his broom, so he tightens hisgrip to make sure he doesn’t even though he’s quite aware that Viktor is easilyhis equal in flight skill. Probably hisbetter, really. “And who’s the flatterernow?”
Yuuri squeezeshis hand and offers him a genuine, happy smile. “And you’re even cuter when you blush,” he adds, then immediately dropsinto another quick dive and a roll instead of waiting for a response. Throwing a glance over his shoulder, he seesViktor, flustered and waving a hand in complaint as he follows, protesting.
“I—what—I’m notblushing! Yuuri! It’s the wind!”
A laugh bubblesup in his throat and spills from his mouth, torn from his lips by the rushingwind, and Yuuri pulls himself into a hard, fast corkscrew just for the fun ofit, then shoots upward in a big loop. There isn’t much better than flying above scenery this breathtaking, especially not when one is flying with the most beautiful man in the world.
“You can’t justsay that and rush off!” Viktor is complaining, drawing closer again. Yuuri just grins, feeling lighter than ever, all stuffed with giddy golden butterflies that thrive on the freedom of beingout here, up here, with just the twoof them. He hasn’t felt this free in along time.
“I can,” hepoints out. “I just did.”
“You better notdo it again,” Viktor pouts, eyes twinkling. Joy shines in his face, brighter than the sun, and his wind-mussed hairfloats about so enticingly that Yuuri almost abandons his hold on his broomjust to lean over and run his hands through it. It’s silvery-white in the sunlight, almost like a halo, and it’s kind ofa pity that they’re flying way up here, because that raw delight makes Yuuriwant to grab him and kiss him senseless, which would be a bit of a healthhazard. So he really should findsomething else to distract himself with.
Besides, Viktorjust issued what clearly is achallenge to do it again, and what kind of boyfriend would he be to let himdown?
So Yuuri justgrins at him, competitive spirit coming out again. Viktor must be able to see it, because helets out a playful groan. “Oh no,” hesays. “Don’t you dare, you—”
“I think youhave a really cute nose,” Yuuri blurts out, then shoots forward as fast as hecan, the wind making his eyes water. Behind him, he hears Viktor let out a shout.
“Yuuri!”
“Catch me ifyou can!” he calls back, because if they make it a chase, he can pretend he’sonly red-cheeked because of the wind and the chill, not from the embarrassmentof just having told Viktor he has a cute nose to his face. And Viktor isjust as competitive as he is, so he’ll play.
And then it’son, up and down and back and forth and around, through the forests and over theslopes, skimming the lakes and reaching high for the clouds. It’s a beautiful day, except for the cold, and Yuuri can’t stop laughing as he darts away from Viktor, who stays right onhis tail, always just out of reach. Theminutes fly by like seconds, until they’re both out of breath, floating above aclifftop meadow. It’s very green.
“Wow,” Yuuribreathes, leaning forward until he’s almost flat on his broom as he looks down, over the edge of the cliff. The windpicks up again, blowing his hair back from his face, and he scrunches up hisnose against it, looking at the sharp fall of the cliffside, leaping down tomeet the cold, blue fjord far below. Alittle waterfall like white lace dances its way down the sheer rock, so distantit could be a thread.
A sudden yelpgrabs his attention, and he whips around just in time to see Viktor go tumblingoff his broom. Alarm bells explode asYuuri races back toward him, watching as if in slow-motion as he starts tofall, fall, fall…
…and lands witha thump in the grass of the meadow.
Heart poundingin his throat because of how close he is to the cliff’s edge, Yuuri urges hisbroom down, suddenly terrified. Viktoris face-down. He’s not moving. Oh, god, what happened? How did he fall? Is he—
“Vitya!” hecries, swooping in low and muttering a curse as he tries to detangle himselfand his robes from the broom. Dammit, hereally should have tied them up properly earlier! “Vitya, are you okay? Oh my god, Vitya—”
Viktor rollsover, his hands covering his face. “Yuuri,” he says, and his voice trembles. Oh, no, no no no, is he crying? What happened, what happened, what happened? “Yuuri, I’m ruined. My dignity is gone. It’s all your fault; you did this to me.”
Confusion andguilt rise, and his hands still on the broom. Yuuri sits there in midair, blinking, before he finally tries to findwords. “I… what? Sorry, I…”
Viktor moveshis hands aside, and oh, he’s notcrying at all. He’s laughing. His face is allpink and there’s a shy smile there as he laughs, and now he’s holding out hisarms, the universal invitation for a hug. “Yuuri!” he exclaims, shaking his head. “I fell because—of all things!—I got distracted by thinking of how cute you looked just now! Come here, I need at least ten hugs to feelbetter.”
Relief comesfirst, hard-hitting and heady, and it spills out as laughter. ViktorNikiforov, of all people, fell off his broom because he gotdistracted? Yuuri can’t help but giggleat him.
And then therest of his sentence clicks into place, and with it, Yuuri flips the switchfrom incredibly amused to awfully flustered in a heartbeat. “You what?!”he yelps. How cute he—but he wasn’t evendoing anything!
Heat floods hischeeks faster than a falling Quidditch star hits the ground, making himinstinctively try to bury his face in his hands, and the next thing he knows, the world is tilting dangerously and then there’s a hard impact against hisshoulder and back and hip and ankle, and he blinks, confused, up at the sky.
“Oh my god,”Viktor says, next to him. He starts tolaugh all over again, then rolls over and drapes his arm and leg overYuuri. “And they say love gives us wings,”he sighs mournfully, and the entire situation is so ridiculous that Yuuri justhas to laugh.
He turns and isgreeted by those same sky-blue eyes he was admiring earlier, now sparkling withboth laughter and warmth. Viktor smilesat him with all the tenderness in the world, and Yuuri presses their foreheadstogether, heart still pounding from the exhilaration of their flight.
“I still thinkyou’re very cute when you blush,” he says, and pecks the tip of Viktor’s (verycute) nose. Viktor, of course, blushes.
“You’re evencuter when you’re making those faces at the wind,” he says, his hand findingits way into Yuuri’s hair. The leatherof his glove is slightly cool against Yuuri’s scalp, and when the wind blowsagain, he has to stifle a shiver.
…Viktor’s capeis right there.
Sitting up, heignores Viktor’s soft questioning mewl and reaches for the buckle instead, undoing the clasp as it sits snug across Viktor’s chest. Viktor makes an odd little choked sound.
“You know, dear, if you plan on undressing me, there might be better places than—”
Blushingharder, Yuuri tugs at the cape. “I’mstealing this,” he says, tugging at it again, and Viktor stops. Then he laughs.
“Of course,” hesays. Then he sits up too, wraps itaround the both of them, and pulls Yuuri close, against his chest. His arms are warm and snug, wrapped aroundhim as they are, and Yuuri smiles happily, leaning into him. “What’s mine is yours. I told you that when you first got here.”
“You’re mine,”Yuuri teases, closing his eyes and tucking his head into the crook of Viktor’sneck, nice and cozy. The cape blocks thewind very effectively, and Viktor radiates heat. He could fall asleep like this.
Viktor takes amoment to reply, and Yuuri blinks, opening his eyes just in time to catch hisboyfriend looking down at him with the most gentle, tender expression he’s everseen.
“Yeah,” Viktoragrees warmly. “I am.”
