Weekly Recap | April 1st-7th 2024

"Self-rec time! What are your favorite five fics that you've written and why? After replying to this ask, feel free to pass on to five other writers to spread the love. 💗"

Four of these were easy choices and one was trickier, but in no particular order...

thrown into the nest (T, 10,565 words, WIP)

This fic possessed me. The first chapter took over my entire life for ten hours during which I came up with and wrote the whole thing -- I couldn't stop until it was done and posted. Two or three days later, the same thing happened with the second chapter. It's like I was exorcising demons into a doc file. It's also notable because maybe a week or two before I wrote it, I told a friend I would never write ABO fic. More fool me.

I love this fic because it drew together so many ace people -- I've never felt a greater sense of community than I did in the hours after this fic was posted, seeing the comments of people who saw themselves in Harry and Tom's experiences. It blew me away, and I felt so happy to have done justice to some small part of the ace experience. It was a different type of joy, and a bit more cathartic, to write compared to other fics of mine.

VII (M, 2,609 words)

I think I've said it before, but I honestly thought this would be one of those weird little fics that I wrote for myself and maybe five other people would like. It's grown beyond what I originally meant it to be, and while I really, really love the sequel too, this one holds my heart. It's disjointed and dark (for me), and it's one of the few that I've written that actually has Harry and Voldemort start out hating each other and move through it. (What can I say, I mainly write crack and fluff.) They're both feral and damaged and violent and cling to each other all the tighter for it by the end. I also like making the Unspeakables ethically (and morally) dubious and research-obsessed, and this was my first foray into that.

naïve melody (G, 2,904 words)

The Ferris wheel fic; another fic that I thought maybe five other people would enjoy. I'm still proud of the wistful tone it has, and some of the turns of phrase, despite the crack-tastic premise. It's sweet and silly and it makes me feel warm to re-read it. It might also be my favourite Voldemort characterisation of all the fics I've written.

engrave the silhouette of you (M, 10,480 words, WIP)

Look... I just like hurting them, okay? I used the "angst with a happy ending" tag because I need everyone (myself included) to know it's gonna be alright in the end. I have made myself a crying mess multiple times in the course of writing or plotting out this fic. This is very much a "how would the characters react in this situation if X happened?" fic that has grown legs. It's fun (and painful) to put myself in Harry and Voldemort's headspaces and then put us all through the emotional meat-grinder. But it's going to be fine. Eventually.

Capsized (M, 948 words)

Fun, not-previously-shared fact: this fic started out as a way for me to process my maladaptive daydreams and suicidal ideations through Harry. All of the things he imagines or considers are things that I have, as well. (This makes the one comment that says "MAKE HIM SUFFER YASSSS" really, really funny to me.) I wasn't sure if I would ever post it -- it took me five months to decide to do it, because it's extremely personal. But it felt good to put it all into words and make it... "pretty," I guess? It's probably as raw as I can make it while also trying to fit it into the HP world and have it be enjoyable to read.

(Honourable mention goes to Prompt-ober 2023, because it almost killed me to do it, but it was so much fun to write everyday for a month and have the same folks comment each day and chat with them throughout the month (I love you all ♡♡♡). However, that's like twenty-five different fics in one, so it doesn't count.)

the idea for this fic actually went through two different fandoms before coming to light in critical role. i'd signed up for a christmas hallmark movie prompt thing and sadly didn't get my pick, so i left cause i got unreasonably attached to this one idea and so it came with me as i moved into another fandom where about 10k got written before the muse abandoned me until shadowgast ate my life and here we are. its probably the most self indulgent fic i've ever written, purely created for moi and i love it, bonus other people seemed to like it too! woo!

a full YEAR in the making, this is my biggest, longest, most EVERYTHING fic. i love it, i had so much fun writing it but boy was it hard work. the time, the energy that went into this. i really challenged myself to dig deep for essek's emotions and insecurities and i'm really proud of how it turned out. i definitely improved as a writer because of the challenges this fic liked to throw at me

not gonna lie this is one of my comfort fics that i re-read of my things that always makes me feel better. i love the dynamic of being so comfortable and in love that the simplest acts of affection become automatic and the realisation of those acts can lead to a deeper sense and understanding of that love. i'm a sucker for the old married couple troupe.

4. something that surprised you (in how it turned out, how much other people liked it, etc.)

keep me warm [explicit, caleb/essek]

listen i am not a smut writer, it is not one of my strengths, it's very difficult for me and even the smallest scene requires days/weeks/months of writing cause i just struggle with it so damn much, (maybe she's (gnc) born with it, maybe its maybelline the aroace of it all). the idea for this fic just grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go so i put word to document and it actually came out alright, i was pleasantly surprised that i actually managed to put what was in my head into the fic in a very good way so very proud of myself for it

5. something you want other people to see

ok ok ok i know i haven't finished parts 2 and 3 yet, YET! but i love how this series is shaping up even though it has grown beyond the teeny tiny wee fun little three part fluff ball it was meant to be into something so big and with feelings, think fluff ball the size of one of those stupidly big plastic tourist attractions they've got out in america. i love looking into old courting practices and seeing what would fit and connect with the culture of the drow and just being able to explore different aspects of their relationship and the important moments to them as well. part three especially has me a little teary cause its gonna be so gosh darn sweet so yeah, stay tuned i am writing it, its just bigger than originally designed lol

🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?

Weirdest topic.... hmmmmmmm this is gonna take a minute! Weirdest is such a relative term. The obvious answer would be medical whump topics. Even though I'm a veterinarian I don't do emergencies (unless they literally walk through the door, we rec referral to our many excellent local ER clinics instead), and obviously I don't work on humans, so between those two things my ER knowledge is more limited. So I always do research on human whump unless it's a topic I already know extremely well. Even then I still usually will run through an overview and check a few journals or descriptions of what something actually feels like to make sure I'm not putting out anything wildly inaccurate when it comes to things like noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, crotalid envenomation, femoral fractures, or amputation recovery. But is that weird? I'm not sure!

I did have to research some basic military terms for a recent Bad Batch fic though just to make sure I sounded vaguely like I knew what I was talking about, and I'm also constantly looking up clone/Dragon Age armor names to make sure I'm talking about the right bit of armor, haha.

🕯️ ⇢ on a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy editing? why is that?

I really enjoy editing, I'd say it's 9/10. One, it gives me a chance to read my own writing, which I adore because it's mine and it's my story and I like it. While I get imposter syndrome about editing art sometimes, for some reason I have always been confident in my writing and relaxed in it, which helps. Two, I hate the idea of putting out something with obvious errors, so it's soothing to go through and make sure I haven't used the word "trembled" seventeen times and that people aren't breathing too much. Three, it's great to go through and see if there's a phrase I can add or tweak that makes the ending that much more resonant, once I've got the ending in mind. I mostly write in chronological order, so sometimes going back to the beginning once I've reached the end gives me the chance to work something in that will be a gut punch by the end of the story. I took 1 point off out of 10 because sometimes I am soooo impatient to post my story, but know I need to take the time for the editing -- sometimes just for a few minutes to an hour, but sometimes I let the story cool off for a day before I go back for the edit if it's a long one.

911 Lone Star

let me take your heart (love you in the dark) by @reyescarlos - this fic is so damn hot and i love that they're so flirty from the get-go. Kim has created straight fire, which is fortunate, because Carlos is a firefighter in this fic and the working together aspect is heartwarming and also leads to some...enjoyable opportunities (for them). I remember going absolutely insane in the comments for this one and there is a REASON for that.

lit the spark (that set a fire) by @reyesstrand - an amazing firefighter!Carlos AU that I only read recently, this one has the incredible transition from acquaintances to best friends to lovers and honestly, the way Maddie describes the best friend component had me sobbing. I think the main thing that stuck out to me is that at every point in this fic, even when TK didn't realise it, Carlos was exactly what he needed at that time.

love me as if i were forever by @rmd-writes - this one is so damn sweet and fills you with all the most comforting feelings. I think Rae describes it as TK and Carlos just loving each other a lot, and it's exactly the kind of vibe that a really good forehead kiss brings. Also, it was gifted to me after a family member passed away so it was SO appreciated at that time.

Red White and Royal Blue

Love is Thai food and crepe paper by @clottedcreamfudge - another ultimate feel good fic. It has notes written to each other, a sweet dynamic that includes the trademark CCF banter, some cute moments with kids. In this AU, Alex and Henry are teachers, and somehow it works SO WELL. Definitely recommend to put a smile on your face.

omg anon where did u come from....

first of all everything that had to be said has already been said here + anything else i could say is also influenced by k. that's mandatory reading to understand any of this. but i will say more anyway.

i like 814 because i like oscar (which is because i rate him and find him likeable and endearing and it is fun to like people who you think are going to win in some sense!), and i like interesting tensiony team dynamics. when the season started i was so unthrilled by the landoscar Content because i was convinced oscar was boring (even though i wanted to like him) and lando both saw that he was boring and was pity-engaging with oscar, partly because he thought oscar was a nice guy and deserved the pity-engagement, and partly because he had to for the Sponsors. there was this sense... i had this sense that lando was "fun" and oscar was "straightlaced" and so they were incompatible, because lando would always think oscar was just Not his type of person, which is fine you know! at this point of the szn oscar was also getting dominated by lando in quali (see summer break stats - aside from lando making mistakes while those are somewhat reflective of your skills they're not representative of your capabilities on the average day, and lando is generally quite consistent otherwise) so there was nothing* oscar had on him besides being more booksmart (*this is an exaggeration for effect)

i think that mistaken perception (that i had and that i imagine lando had) is what set them up for an interesting dynamic where in a reversal of expectations oscar can and does call lando out on his bs instead of being a doormat. even when they're joking around they have BANTER and that's what i really love out of a pairing. there's a sense of equality there when you can both dish it out and take it, and dishing it out itself is so Satisfying to me personally, intellectually. they Like and Respect each other enough to praise each other when warranted and make fun of each other when they get the opportunity. and to top it off they both deliver in terms of performance, obviously with the caveats that oscar is less experienced and has to be given the benefit of the doubt in regards to his potential. but every weekend i scream when lando goes on team radio to remind the pit wall that he's faster than oscar even when he's behind - because there is a real fight between them with real stakes in driver image/confidence/prioritization/team long-term strategy, all based on how well they do this year relative to each other. i love it so much!

all that is that but the reason i'm actually insane about them is that transparent t-shirt moment where lando says something truly unhinged SO awkwardly because tinhat he's insane about oscar. oscar's "will you" and "that's a lie" in that video, the tone omg. the goggle games never-ending competition. lando telling oscar to shut up. oscar being able to get under his skin. lando strangely gifting oscar easy wins at the end of their mclaren tiktok games. the sponsored video, the concept of which was making lando and oscar stare at each other the entire time and Perceiving each other. lando telling the viewers of his karting vlog OSCAR HAS BEEN TESTING. OSCAR HAS BEEN A LITTLE SNAKE. why do they talk like this about each other. why does oscar look at lando like that "that's just how he is" yes but it's very deceptive!!!!! the line between fiction and interpreted reality is there but if i were to put a pathetic filter on lando it would look like this

i'm not gonna lie i haven't scoped out the 814 tag because i just wait for k to tell me if there's anything good. i haven't really resonated with anything so far because i am really particular about the believability of explicitly romantic/sexual relationships between characters when one or both of them are in a public r/s (in that i don't like it when "canon" fic ignores reality) ... but i'll link k's response here (EDIT: I SKIMMED SOME OF THESE THEY ARE WELL WRITTEN)

How do you feel about kink in romance novels? Do you feel like it's becoming too normalized in romance? I wish authors would put warnings at the beginning if there is going to be a kink but a lot of them don't.

Alrighty let's break this down. I'm fine with reading kink in romance novels. Some of my favorite romance novels (erotic and otherwise) have kink in them and fair few of my favorite authors write kink. I read a lot of fanfiction back in the day that a) exposed me to a variety of kinks (thanks ao3 tagging system) and b) also made me a pretty indiscriminate reader (obviously I have some limits) so I'll read anything if it's well written, regardless of whether it has kink in it or not.

As for "too normalized"... look, kink is a part of a lot of peoples' lives irl so I don't think there's such a thing as "too normalized" if reality is being reflected in our romance novels (also.... "too normalized" smacks of neo-puritanism to me). I haven't been a romance reader for very long, but I feel like (again, reflecting the fact that kink is a part of a lot of peoples' lives, in a sexual sense or otherwise) romance authors have been writing about kink for longer than we think, even if it's in subtle ways. Listen, I joke about Lisa Kleypas' recurring thing where she writes heroes with vague foot fetishes but it's a great example of subtle but present kink in older(ish) romance novels (see: Nikolas Angelovsky's her-foot-on-his-dick moment in Prince of Dreams which was written in 1995, and of course Simon Hunt in Secrets of a Summer Night, whose foot fetish I documented in this compilation). And then there's more obviously kinky books like Anne Rice's The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty (written in 1983). I do think kink in romances has become more mainstream in the last decade-ish since Fifty Shades came out but even then, the quality has varied vastly. The ones I've been recced that seem more inspired by Fifty Shades, contemporary or historical, tend to be... very bland. A rich guy, a Dom/sub relationship, many a chastising "bad girl", and she's gonna get her (pardon my indelicacy) ass beat by him at some point. Other authors like Tiffany Reisz (who cites Anne Rice as one influence) and Sierra Simone (who was, in part, inspired by Tiffany Reisz) write kink more subversively and in a way that I find more entertaining to read. Also, a misconception I think a lot of people have about kink in romance novels is that it has to be BDSM, which isn't accurate. One of my favorite romance novels I've read this year, Minx by Sophie Lark, mostly dealt in pet play and exhibitionism.

As for content warnings, from what I've seen a lot of authors do include them in their books or on their websites, and yes, I agree it would be helpful for any author to include pertinent content warnings, but here's my thing: ultimately, it's your responsibility to vet the media you choose to consume if you're that worried. Go online, check out the author's website and read some reviews. As flawed as it can get with its tagging system, check out romance.io. Ultimately, it's your choice in what you consume, and dealing with it by calling kink "too normalized" because you are uncomfortable isn't it.

1) What’s your favourite SJM book? A Court Of Silver Flames, that book literally changed my life

2) Which is your favourite series (tog, acotar or cc) Oh my god, it depends on what I last read, which right now is ACOTAR but TOG is my baby

3) Who is your favourite character? (And why?) Nesta and how much time do you have? I'll say this, I'm Nesta through and through, I had a friend who once said I looked like her. Nesta is how I feel about myself and seeing her working towards being better makes me want to be better too.

4) Do you have a favourite quote from one of the books? "So Nesta had become a wolf. Armed herself with invisible teeth and claws, and learned to strike faster, deeper, more lethally. Has relished it. But when the time came to put away the wolf, she found it had devoured her too."

5) Favourite ship? I'm going with Nessian or Rowaelin because I hope I can find someone that sees all of me and chooses to love me anyways too one day :)

6) Elriel or Gwynriel? Or neither? If you're holding a pew pew to my head I'm going Gwynriel. Because I love Lucien too much. but honestly neither.

7) Who’s the most underrated SJM character? This is SUCH a hot take but Tharion Ketos. Has he had his moments recently? yeah. But the way that guy flirts? Oh I would be giggling and kicking my feet.

8) Which character do you wish to learn more about? Eris Vanserra, did I tear him to shreds in my Cassian series? yes. Do need him in a carnal way? Absolutely. I just know he's got shit going on.

9) Are there any characters you don’t like? Ithan Holstrom and I have beef...

10) Favourite bat boy? Shoot me it would hurt less. Honestly I think if I was in a room with them and none of them had mates I'd run to Rhys first. He's a scorpio and so am I (shocker) so I know we would vibe. but on the official mate quiz I got Azriel so???

I only have 8 works on my ao3 lol let's go

bloom (Arcane; Caitlyn/Vi) CaitVi, 750 words, short and to the point. I like this one because I wrote it in like 20 minutes and it really did come out nice. Also, there is a pun, and what can be more me

Guardian Revisited (Fullmetal Alchemist Manga/Brotherhood; Lan Fan/Ling) Also a very quick write. There's just so much potential for yearning with this ship. They're like RoyAi but somehow even more emotionally stunted. Anyway, I think this one came out pretty. It makes me happy to read.

The Fire Next Time (Arcane; Ekko-centric, background Caitlyn/Vi) This is the story I started writing pretty much right after I watched Arcane, though I didn't post it for some months after. I was just feeling really emotional about Ekko lol and how much he must've been through. I was also reading James Baldwin at the time, hence the title lol. While it doesn't really get too deep into the politics, I think the relationship between Ekko and Jinx came out well, and since Ekko willingness to look out for her after everything is the heart of the story, I think it works.

talk revolution to me (Arcane; role-swapped Jinx/Ekko) The big one. It just keeps growing. I don't know. Anyway, after doing The Fire Next Time, I wanted to keep exploring political themes in the setting. I also happened to be wondering at the same time if a role-swap between these two was possible (because we all saw the Mush art okay), and I decided to put those ideas together. I do think it's been lagging a little, but in general it's actually pretty good. I'm working on my self-esteem this year. I can say that, right? Well anyway, I'm really glad a lot of people have found and loved it, and I'm extra glad people really love Powder. It's a lot of fun letting her be the hero of her own story and watching her grow, and the audience participation in terms of helping me write has been a blast.

heir (ap)pparent (Arcane; role-swapped Jinx/Ekko) So where the big story is Powder's, this is Ekko's bonus content story. It all started because I was having such a hard time writing him that I needed to experiment getting in his head, and here we are. I've said it before and I'll say it again lol writing a role-swapped Ekko is a pain in the ass. He's probably the hardest POV character I've ever written, but since the main story is over on Powder's side, I really get to just play around in these chapters and that is certainly very fun. Definitely pushes me to grow as a writer, and I'm having a lot of fun with the prose and style.

hey lovey! it would be my pleasure to try and help you <3. i say try because my explaining skills are the absolute worst but i will do my best lmao. gonna do this in bullet points ok:

have an idea / inpisration / a crumb of what you want your blog to look like! you can find inspo literally anywhere, a friends blog even (but please remember to always ask and don't take it harshly if said person declines you doing so). pinterest is also amazing for this, looking up graphics, different aesthetics, templates, i literally have a board on my pinterest i've had for years now where i get graphic inspo or where i go when i just need to feed my creative juices to put me in the mood to create something. canva is also great, i literally go on there and look up headers, moodboards, etc and just star them for later. keywords are everything as well, so like 'aesthetic here + color, vibe, look, graphic, template' helps sites like canva and pin lead you in the right direction. same with just typing things like 'green, grunge, lovecore, etc'.

edit on desktop! now i know not everyone has a laptop or ipad or the ability to do this but i highly rec it over editing on the janky mobile app where sometimes things save and sometimes they don't. plus i always use one of the random saved user blogs i have to make a test layout / theme so if i don't like it everything on my main blog is fine, didn't change, and i didn't waste all that time on a theme i don't even want to look at lmao. so making a side blog where you do that is also great cause you can just copy and paste your nav post over, you can take the graphics you've already made and upload them onto your main without second guessing if they look good because you've already seen what it all looks like!

start small! by that i mean start with a simple theme or idea and build up from that. don't just start with seven graphics and ideas and overwhelm yourself. sometimes i just think of a color and be like yeah i'm make something with this color or wrapped around that color and i create something great.

ask a friend for help! i can't tell you how many times i've asked friends if this theme looked good or to send me inspo pics or what theme they think i should do, or even asked them to help me find resources. utilize your besties and mutuals.

not everyones aesthetic is the same! some people like messy themes, some like overdone, some like super simple. don't compare yourself to anyone!!!! everyone creates differently, everyone sees colors and aesthetics amd themes differently. no matter what you decide to go with is all your own and great and special.

etc: putting all your most important links in your nav is always a good rule of thumb (anything you really want to highlight as well), if you use pngs they're all over tumblr and pinterest 'transparent' + 'png' at the end or beginning of what you're looking for will always lead you in the right direction, and when it comes to pngs i highly rec adding them to a white background or transparent one and make the size of the background 500px and move the png halfway / towards the bottom (centered) of the background so tumblr doesn't make your header all the way at the top and ugly, don't make your nav post too long, take colors from your images / aesthetics to incorporate throughout the whole theme so everything meshes well together, don't use flashy dividers because it's not good on a lot of users eyes and unless you state a tw in the tags it's just not as cool as some people think lol.

Aaaaaaand another tag game which I found while binging through the writer tag game tag!

Which fic did you think would get a bigger reaction/audience than it got?

The most recent one - Greet Me With Open Arms cuz it was a requests fic where I asked people to give me dialogue prompts to use in a single fic. But then again, I posted it just yesterday. I'm just really excited about it and wanna know what people (especially those who put their dialogue prompts requests) think of it.

Which fic got a better reaction than you expected?

The Boy In The Cell, quite honestly. Cuz I thought people would ignore it due to how self-indulgent it was, but so many liked it! Thanks, you guys ^^

Which fic is your funniest?

Based on the comments, Phone Alarms. Quite proud of that one ^.^

Is your darkest/angstiest?

Ahh. Either The Boy In The Cell or There’s So Much Hurt (you can already tell by the title XD) These two cuz they cover darker topics like abuse and stuff. But if you count all the fics including the wips, then definitely this one wip i'm working on which is... pretty b a d. I mean, not the plot, the plot and characters and stuff is awesome! But in terms of rating the angst, its like- up there.

Is your absolute favourite?

Ahh. It depends on my mood, really. Sometimes I say My School’s Local Mafia Boss, sometimes Sometimes You Have To Find Your Own Genes, sometimes a couple of my wips (cuz fbhic i love the plots i've created for them like- bhfvifubhu). But right now? I'm saying I Feel More Than A Simple "Miss You" just cuz I put so much care into it, more than any other oneshot I've ever written.

Is your least favourite?

A Day In The Life Of Tim Drake. No hesitation. It's my first fic. Ok- sometimes, i am proud of it. But most times, nah. Cuz I wrote this on a whim bc i didnt like the thought of having an empty ao3 account and i did not think i would be actually writing fanfiction regularly. But here i am!

Which was the easiest to write?

I... don't know? I wouldn't be writing fanfic, or writing at all period. So I'm gonna say all of them.

The hardest?

As i said, I wouldn't be writing at all if it was hard so i'm gonna say non- NO. WAIT. THERE IS TWO.

Murder On The Stalker’s Turf and I Can See You. Cuz these were casefics and i was writing these while trying to get back into the flow of writing after a particularly hard and taxing writer's block.

which fic have you re-read the most?

My School’s Local Mafia Boss No hesitation. One, to refer back to it while writing the series. Two, cuz I write fics for me first and foremost and so i very much love this fic and reread it quite a lot. Three, i cant believe how much attention its getting! why- ohh that's why, yep. And four, I'm feeling nostalgic and I want to visit the place where I made most of my current friends.

Which one would i recommend to someone reading your work for the first time?

Phone Alarms ig? Cuz it's really chill and cracky and I'm really proud of it. But if we're including wips, then I would rec the Bruce Wayne Writes Fanfic AU first XD

9 People You Want To Know Better

Currently Reading: it's a webcomic, but I'm gonna put Countdown to Countdown here. Iris is 💜💚💛, and Lillium is great for him. The world is absolutely *fascinating*, too!

Last Song I Listened To: dunno. The radio is the soundtrack to my life. The last one I remember cranking was Might Love Myself by Beartooth (highly recommend it. It's a rock ballad about the sense of euphoria when you have that breakthrough and are able to embrace and love yourself) and the last one I searched was Brenda Put Your Bra On (which is my new favourite Trailer Trash Anthem, but is much more niche in a lot of ways). The last one I heard live was Journey's Wheel In The Sky, since they were my last concert.

Currently Watching: Sailor Moon R. My bestie and I are working through it together. That's our trade off: I can correct her on Doctor Who on occasion and she now has opinions on several different animes.

Current Fic I'm Reading: I took a random notion for an older Tony/Bucky fic recently where they're roommates while Tony is in college after Tony forgets hooking up with Bucky while drunk. I just randomly remembered that Bucky wore mesh underwear in it and decided to hunt it down.

Current Brainrot: (I agree it's a bit enhhhhhh to use specific terms related to diagnosis I don't have to simply denote enthusiasm) I've got a set of OCs that originally belonged to a one shot who have spawned a whole world now. The bit I'm working with now is where the romantic lead, an obsessive sociopath, murders five people in assorted creative ways. And he's not just the protagonist, he's actually the good guy. It's not my strength at all, so I'm excited for the challenge of it.

Favourite Colour: Red, though I usually wear blues or purples. Red washes me out really badly and makes me look sick

Relationship Status:

For real though, I just started a new job and my on-call schedule was exhausting even before. We'll see how this shapes up in the new year.

Last Thing I Googled: 🤣 I was trying to learn the chemical composition of sparklers and gave my computer syphilis. It's in the shop now. And yes, this is related to the sociopath and his murder plots.

Song Stuck In My Head: Bad Man by Disturbed. I heard it recently and now it's unpacked it's bags and set up a grocery order.

(Also, if you're interested, Sabaton did a song version of In Flanders Feild on their The Great War album)

Favourite Food: Tomatoes. Just tomatoes in general, although currently I've taken a liking to slicing them, then sprinkling with garlic and feta.

Dream Trip: I've knocked a few off the bucket list and the next up is Japan, tentatively scheduled for Spring 2025.

Currently reading: City of Bones by Cassie Clare. I never read it during it's peak when I was literally the right age demographic and I feel like I missed out. It's not the strongest writing in the world but I am enjoying it so far. It's been interesting to go back and reread a bunch of "older" YA - like pre-2016-ish. There is so much more filler, banter, character moments than in the post-2016 stuff, especially post-2019. Like it was right around that time that publishing shifted to the "everything has to advance the plot and be super fast paced" mentality. And tbh... I like the old stuff better. It spawned larger fandoms with more staying power - I mean, how many post-2019 booktok popular books have more than 100 fanfics on AO3? I think I'm not the only one who misses the slower, more character focused YA.

Last song I listened to: Avril Lavine's Keep Holding On was on the radio while I was driving home from work. 10 year-old me knew all the words. 20-something me still does.

Currently watching: I haven't watched any TV or movies is so long oh my gosh. But! I did go see murder mystery play with my friend last Friday night!

Current fic I'm reading: [do I confess to having a secret whump blog here? My anxiety is pretty bad rn. Which means I have been devouring and regurgitating whump like no tomorrow. I have read and written so much holy]

Current hyperfixation (changed from obsession because I don't use that language. I do, however, have ADHD): yeah... uhhh... whump.

Favourite colour: Green, specifically the shade of the underside of a maple leaf caught in the sun. But I am also very partial to any rich blue or pink.

Spicy, sweet, savory, or salty? A little bit of everything. I like it when dishes are made with really high-quality ingredients that speak for themselves and don't need to be disguised with sugar, spices, or salt.
