Bruce telling Dick that he will not stop until the mission is over in The Batman 2004 reminds me of how, in the Batman comics (2016), Bruce fears letting the mission to his kids because he is afraid it will kill them.

It makes him sound obsessed with the mission, but the reality is, it's about his family, his kids. The mission is a burden, and he doesn't want his kids to inherit that. And how is he supposed to stop if he knows that his kids are putting themselves in danger every night because he failed? Because the mission isn't over? He cannot have that.

Meanwhile, in the main universe:

Cara Mulawin walks out of the bathroom at the Stargazer lounge, and puts her long hair into a bun. She catches a glimpse of someone in yellow, and grins. "Gracie!" She calls out, and her best friend (and crush) Grace Siddiqui turns to look at her. She's stunningly beautiful in a flowy off the shoulder yellow dress and simple jewelry. Cara's heart races as Grace’s face turns from sad to lit up at the sight of her.

Grace walks over to Cara, grinning as she eyes her fancy orange cocktail dress. "Hey Car, you look gorgeous. What's the occasion?" She asks teasingly, and Cara snorts. "I could ask you the same thing Ace. I was at a work event." She says. "I was at one of my coworker's wedding, he's super rich so he and his groom went all out." Grace’s smile falters and Cara reaches over to squeeze her hand. "When they had the first dance, I couldn't-I had to leave. I told one of our mutual friends to let him know that I wasn't feeling well and was sorry to go but had to and I came up here to get some new perspective and fresh air." Grace says half jokingly but her voice shakes, and Cara nods.

Grace takes a deep breath. "I'm sorry about you and Is, I know you loved her." Cara says gently. Grace nods, biting her lip. "Me too, I wanted to make it work but we were getting so distant and we weren't ready to get married. Plus, I think Iseul still loves Megan and I couldn't marry someone who I'm a second choice for." Grace says, her voice a little stronger. "I understand, Gracie. It wouldn't have been right if you married her while ignoring everything going on." She says and Grace nods.

They go and sit by the bubble blowers, and Grace smiles sadly "You know what the worst part is? The disappointment when I told my family that the wedding is off. They wanted this for me so badly, and my mum's family in Pakistan is asking why I'm not getting married* because Iseul seemed so perfect and we could've worked through it, and I feel so stupid and embarrassed." Grace says and Cara reaches over to put her hand on Grace’s. "You are not stupid, you made the right choice for yourself. What if you did go through with it to save face and you and Iseul were both unhappy? You can't do things to make someone else happy, and your family will understand." She says and Grace smile. "How are you so wise, Car?" She asks, wiping away a stray tear. "Experience, plus my dads say I'm an old soul." Cara says lightly, smiling as Grace snorts.

"Anyway, for today I just want to forget everything." Grace says, reaching for the nozzle of the bubble blower. "Ace, you sure? It's really intense." Cara says cautiously. "I just want to let loose for a bit." Grace says, and Cara grins at the mischievous glint in her eye. It hasn't been there for a while, and Cara is glad to see it again. "Okay, just be careful-" She says just as Grace inhales too much solution and coughs up bubbles. "Don't even say it, Car." she says as Cara gives her a playful grin and one more bubble comes out, causing both of them to double over with laughter.

Ngl I'm just beyond disappointed that anyone in that dev team thought cutting this was a good idea. Especially when we know they went out of their way to add in a someone who wasn't put in this game as a companion and wasn't intended to be one initially, while Ketheric was, even more so because of how half baked it was. I'm baffled and gutted that this was worth keeping to them, while Ketheric, who is far more plot significant, was not.

It's 2024. I have been participating in fandom for 40 years. This is a ramble commemorating some history I've experienced along the way.

In 1984, I attended my first convention, and made a beeline for the one long row of covered tables in the Dealer's Room that was, according to the whispered lore of my friends, 'the one'. "um", I said, very suavely and coherently, except for how it was totally the opposite of those things, "I'm here for the... for the, uh. For-"

"Come around here," the man behind the table said with exhausted ennui, so I went around, and he lifted up the table skirt next to him and pointed to rows and rows of boxes underneath the line of tables. "It's all under here."

It was all under there. Along with about five older ladies with glasses, graying hair, cardigans. Flipping through slash zines and chatting in whispered voices like old friends (which of course they were). I noticed one of them had the good sense to be wearing kneepads. I was still too young and ablebodied to need kneepads when crawling on a carpeted floor, but I immediately found her preparedness skills to be both impressive and hot. "You're new," one of the ladies whispered to me--a bit warily, which made sense. "Are you sure you're in the right place?"

In the faint light (the kneepads lady had also come prepared with a flashlight, additional practicality hotness points for her) I grabbed a comb-bound book with a heavy line art piece on the cover, featuring a musclebound Captain Kirk getting righteously and enthusiastically plowed by a stern-yet-ebullient Spock. "This," I said, pointing helpfully at the cover, like I was trying to make myself understood in a language I had only the vaguest knowledge of. "I'm here for this."

Outside at the convention, most of the attendees were wearing large homemade circular pins that shrieked 'K/S is BS!!!'1. But underneath the table, we reveled in the forbidden.

In 1985, I fell very hard for Starsky & Hutch fandom. Which was simply referred to at the time as 'the other fandom', because there were only two. We were upstarts. Many fannish elders predicted that it was just a phase.

The 'circulating library' was a massive stack of barely-legible pages that smelled strongly of mimeograph ink. When you were on the list, you would write stories while you waited for your turn, and when the big box was mailed to you, you would read everything (new finds, old favorites), add your own sloppily-typed or hastily-mimeographed stories, and then mail the whole thing to the next person. For me, at the time, it was an extremely expensive indulgence--but my favorite one.

By 1990, slash fandom had grown enough that I no longer knew everyone in it, which was both thrilling and a bit daunting. A young woman at a convention waited for me after a panel I was part of (I think it was 'writing impactful smut' or something like that), and said she had a question she didn't want to ask in a group setting. I'd heard that before. I said that's fine, go ahead and ask; and she came out with: "Why do you have to be gay?"

I blinked. "Is... that a problem?"

She looked annoyed. "Yes, because your stories are on all the recommendation lists and in all the top zines, but if you're gay and I read something you wrote and I get hot from it that makes me gay, and I'm not gay."

"Wow." I grinned, I couldn't help it. It probably made me look very predatory-dyke-about-to-score-a-toaster. Whatever, it was enough to make her back away from me fast.

When I thought about it later that night, I wondered what it would be like not to be the only queer person in slash fandom.

By 1997, slash started appearing on the internet. Many fannish elders claimed it was the death knell of slash fandom, or dismissed it as 'just a phase'.

Anyway, I wrote all this for myself as a commemoration of sorts, but if you took the time to read it--thank you. Love you, fandom. I always will.

1 In those days, m/m fandom was known as 'slash', which grew from the fannish shorthand where 'K&S' meant a story of Kirk and Spock having adventures or tribulations or what have you, and 'K/S' meant a story of Kirk and Spock getting it on (Kirk divided by Spock or Spock into Kirk--it was mathy fannish humor and I was into it then and I still am now). Slash was decidedly unpopular in the fannish world in 1984, and there was a concerted effort to force slash authors, artists, and fans out of 'mainstream' fannish public life. Hence, under the table.

Please, if you can, take a moment to read and share this because I feel like I'm screaming underwater.

NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) stigma is rampant right now, and seems to be getting progressively worse. Everyone is using it as a buzzword in the worst ways possible, spreading misinformation and hatred against a real disorder.

I could go on a long time about how this happened, why it's factually incorrect (and what the disorder actually IS), why it's harmful, and the changes I'd like to see. But to keep this concise, I'll simply link to a few posts under the cut for further reading.

The point of this post is a plea. Please help stop the spread of stigma. Even in mental health communities, even around others with personality disorders, in neurodivergent "safe" spaces, other communities I thought people would be supportive in (e.g. trans support groups, progressive spaces in general), it keeps coming up. So I'm willing to bet that a lot of people on this site need to see this.

Because it's so hard to exist in this world.

My disorder already makes me feel as if I'm worthless and unlovable, like there's something inherently wrong and damaged about me. And it's so much harder to fight that and heal when my daily life consists of:

Laughing and spending time with my friends, doing my utmost best to connect and stay present and focused on them, trying to let my guards down and be real and believe I'm lovable- when suddenly they throw out the word "narcissist" to describe horrible people or someone they hate, or the conversation turns to how evil "people with narcissistic personality disorder" are. (Seriously, you don't know which of your friends might have NPD and feels like shit when you say those things & now knows that you'd hate them if you knew.)

Trying to look up "mental health positivity for people with npd", "mental health positivity cluster bs", only to find a) none of that, and b) more of the same old vile shit that makes me feel terrible about myself.

Having a hard time (which is constant at this point) and trying to look up resources for myself, only to again, find the same stigma. And no resources.

Not having any clue how to help myself, because even the mental health field is spitting so much vitriol at people with DISORDERS (who they're supposed to be helping!) that there's no solid research or therapy programs for people like me.

Losing close friends when they find out, despite us having had a good relationship before, and them KNOWING me and knowing that I'm not like the trending image of pwNPD. Because now they only see me through the lens of stigma and misinformation.

Hearing the same stigma come up literally wherever I go. Clubs. Meetings. Any online space. At the bus stop. At the mall. At a restaurant. At work. Buzzword of the year that everyone loooves loudly throwing around with their friends or over the phone. Feels awesome for me, makes my day so much better/s

I could go on for a long time, but I'm scared no one will read/rb this if it gets too much longer.

So please. Stop using the word "narcissist" as a synonym for "abusive".

Stop bringing up people you hate who you believe to have NPD because of a stigmatizing article full of misinformation whenever someone with actual NPD opens their mouth. (Imagine if people did that with any other disorder! "Hey, I'm autistic." "Oh... my old roommate screamed at me whenever I made noise around him, and didn't understand my needs, which seems like sensory overload and difficulty with social cues. He was definitely autistic. But as long as you're self-aware and always restraining your innate desire to be an abusive asshole, you're okay I guess, maybe." ...See how offensive and ignorant that is?)

Stop preventing healthcare for people with a disorder just because it's trendy to use us as a scapegoat.
