Meta: Jemily Queerbaiting

With the huge influx of posts saying 'Jemily is gonna be canon', I really appreciated seeing this post because OP was completely correct. I didn't want to write an entire dissertation as a reply, so I'm making my own post with my personal opinion on this. (All sources are noted in footnotes)

Before I began this rant, for anyone who thinks this is anti-Jemily. It is not. I have shipped Jemily for 18 friggin years and that's never going to change. This post is specifically my thoughts about queer baiting.

First off, I need to note that the showrunners (and the cast members who use social media) KNOW what a huge queer following this show has and that's why we got pansexual Tara Lewis in S16 [1]. Which, in itself, was SOOOOOOO important!!! Our first canonically queer main in SIXTEEN seasons was a middle-aged Black woman!!! That's phenomenal. (The fact it was horrible rep, because they instantly ruined her relationships once her queerness served it's plot point is a whole other post entirely)

In my opinion, the 'big Jemily moment' Paget posted about on Twitter [2] (and AJ hinted at during a recent IG live) is simply queerbaiting to get people to watch S17. I know a lot of you are newer to the fandom and I love your enthusiasm, I really do, ship and let ship, but listen, let's be real, Jemily is not going to be made canon. The showrunners aren't going to suddenly say (after 17 seasons) 'Surprise, Jemily is endgame'. This show has never cared about queer rep and now that CBS/Paramount have already ticked their queer rep box with Tara, they won't be in any rush to add any other characters to it.

Please buckle in, I've got a lot of thoughts on this matter --

What is Queerbaiting?

If you aren't aware of what queerbaiting is, here's a good definition:

Historically, queerbaiting has carried two meanings: the first is an act of aggressive heterosexuality to shut down queer subtext on screen while still teasing and catering to the queer audience in advertising, public relations, and fan engagement strategies; the second is an existing homoerotic tension between two characters played up on screen while met with derision by the professionals behind the scenes. [3]

The Medium article quoted here is from 2017, a time when parasocial relationships were really starting to take over social media. In 2024, actors are now only a mention or tag away online, they have direct conversations with fans, and this process has allowed for an even deeper form of queerbaiting.

Oftentimes online, actors are asked directly about certain ships and while some ignore these questions (usually to avoid breaking their contracts or other repercussions), others (looking at you, Paget) choose to instead tease fans about queer ships. She's done this for years upon years and if I've learned anything in the past twenty-years of existing in fandom spaces it's this -- don't hold your breath. In it's original meaning, for something to be deemed as queerbaiting there had to be malicious, or at least, purposeful intent to string queer fans along by teasing them with suggestive content about the ship in question, while knowing this ship will never come to fruition in canon.

The thing to remember is, Paget and AJ aren't the only ones who know about Jemily shippers -- the network and showrunners are well aware of this ship too. When networks/showrunners figure out they have a strong sapphic fanbase, they love to use that to their advantage to get more viewers and higher ratings. Queerbaiting is a goldmine to keep fans watching long running shows, look at Rizzoli and Isles, Supergirl, and OUAT for examples of this.

Jemily and Queerbaiting:

Ever since Emily joined the BAU in S2 (2006), there have always been fans who ship JJ/Emily (shoutout to the old LJ forums!). Way before celebs were just a tweet away from fans, back when all our fics began with disclaimers so we wouldn't get sued by networks, we went to great lengths to keep our fanworks far removed from actors/showrunners attention.

As far as Jemily goes, this reply from Paget in a 2009 interview with TVGuide.com [4] (which has now been deleted from their site unfortunately, but there are quotes on Tumblr still [4.a]) confirmed some fans' worst fear -- the actors had found our fanworks online.

TVGuide.com: Of course, a band of fans want her to hook up with Hotch.

Brewster: I know! I didn't realize that fans make these videos on YouTube? A.J. Cook sent me a hilarious one that made it look like Prentiss and J.J. were having a secret lesbian affair. You know, when Hotch was blown up in the SUV, we shot this scene where he's in the hospital and I'm standing next to him, looking at his bleeding ear. Our director came in and said, "Paget, you're looking at Hotch like you're in love with him. It looks really weird." So now, every day, Thomas [Gibson] and I flutter our eyelids at each other.

This was the first time I recall anyone acknowledging Jemily shippers publicly and at the time (Jan 2009), the show was still in Season Four (just before CBS fired both AJ and Paget [5]). Paget genuinely said it's 'hilarious' that fans shipped JJ/Emily. Even now, I'll see people say 'We know Paget and AJ have seen Jemily fanvids, so they obviously ship it too' -- but those same people rarely acknowledge the full context of the original answer. Paget not only thought JJ/Emily were 'hilarious', but then she doubled down and turned her reply back to how she and Thomas liked to play up the chemistry between Emily/Hotch.

While no one can say for sure which video it was that AJ sent Paget, just knowing they were watching JJ/Emily fanvids sent a bit of a shockwave through the femslash side of the fandom. To some it felt like an invasion of privacy, fanworks are by fans for fans -- knowing the cast were poking around in fandom spaces added an extra layer of worry around what we fans were posting online. Fifteen years ago, it used to be quite taboo for actors to outwardly discuss shipping or other fanon for whatever show they were in, and we fans were usually comfortably removed from the actors altogether.

Of course, now it's the norm for fans and actors/showrunners to co-exist online and interact with one another. This connection has opened new ways for shows to queerbait their fans. Pretty much every show has some form of social media account now and there is no doubt that the people running those accounts keep up with the most popular ships and hashtags. Not to mention that actors are constantly barraged with questions about whether they ship their character with x,y,z, or whether they think a ship should be made canon, etc. These interactions only serve to benefit the shows themselves, because whether the conversation is for or against a certain ship, it's all just free publicity (Why do you think CM now has a TikTok account?)

Every time AJ or Paget say anything about Jemily, the queer side of the fandom loses their minds. But this has been going on for YEARS now and every single time, it turns out to be nothing but social media hype and queerbaiting. Remember this AJ post? [6] Or what about the notorious reply by Paget to a fan, where she talks about how she and AJ held hands under the table 'for the shippers' [7] I've seen this cycle over and over again, so perhaps I am cynical, but I'm not getting my hopes up that Jemily will ever seriously be canon.

It's widely known now, after both Kirsten [8] and Paget [9] have talked about it, that there was an early idea where Prentiss was supposed to be queer, but that was ultimately scraped before it ever made it on screen. For context, please remember, this show has been airing for nearly twenty years. It began in 2005, during the highly conservative Bush administration. Queer people didn't have rights in the US, we couldn't get married, we were rarely protected under discrimination laws, and we could even be fired for simply being queer (in some states). Diverse queer representation on screen was extremely limited to things like 'The L Word' and 'Queer as Folk' (both aired on Showtime, so they were behind a paywall. And as far as tLw goes, that show was extremely male-gaze focused and is horrible in nearly all regards if you try to rewatch it now). As far as prime time shows went, queer rep was even more rare. Which is why Emily wasn't queer from the get-go.

Yes, things have changed since 2006 in terms of queer rep on TV. We have a myriad of queer identities represented in TV and film nowadays, which is why I think it's so easy for newer fans to say 'lf she was supposed to be gay anyway, they should just make Emily queer in canon!' I know this is what fuels most fans' demands for Emily being confirmed queer, and I get it, I DO. I would be all for it! However, I do not, in one hundred years, actually believe that is going to happen after they already canonically queer confirmed Tara in S16. The fact we even got ONE queer character is ground-breaking for this show.

It's also worth noting, that in the time between Paget's departure in 2012 and her return in 2016, she became very active on Twitter. This was when more and more fans began asking her about Jemily and after Kirsten's AfterEllen interview, fans also pushed for Paget to address the possibility of Emily being gay. 'Pushed' is actually an understatement for some of the outright harassment she would receive. (AJ received some of this harassment too, but less so because she doesn't use social media ass often) Back then, neither of them replied to these things directly. Yet, no matter what either woman posted, the replies were full of Jemily stans begging for her acknowledgement. (Did you know 'stan' is literally a term coined for stalker fans?) I remember one time AJ's friend was missing and she posted info on her IG about it, you know what the replies were? People asking her about Jemily. It was genuinely sickening.

Within this context, it was no surprise to fans when Emily came back in S12 , she and JJ's friendship was seemingly erased. The two women were rarely on screen together in the late seasons, plus the writers saw fit to even give Emily not only one (Mark in London, but two, on-screen boyfriends for the first time in the entire series. I personally do not think these changes to Emily's character were coincidence, I saw the hellscape of what people would say to AJ and Paget online and I fully believe that upon Paget's return to the show, the showrunners purposely tried to distance JJ and Emily to dissuade the more abusive side of the fanbase.

Can I prove that, no. But it is the only reason I can think of as to why Emily S12+ seemingly didn't care about JJ anymore, despite their deep and meaningful friendship. I mean, they both CROSSED THE WORLD to go rescue each other in prior canon -- but when Emily comes back, they acted like they barely knew each other. This was even more prevalent in S16, when JJ's main storylines all revolved around Will, and Emily barely looked at JJ in the entirety of ten episodes. (Remember how Prentiss didn't even hug JJ after bomb, but she did go hug Luke?)

So, do Paget and AJ earnestly ship Jemily, or are they continuing the long tradition of queerbaiting us? Who fucking knows, not me. But based on the history of this fandom, I think I can make a safe bet. (Interestingly, if you search all of Paget's twitter for the word 'Jemily' [10] she only has 3 direct tweets mentioning the ship. I don't think it's a coincidence that two are within the past few months since they started filming S17 (the other one was a RT of Kirsten (who tagged something Jemily)

This is all to say --

Just because Paget and AJ have publicly talked about Jemily,, this doesn't mean it's ever going to happen on screen. And you know what, THAT'S OKAY!! There has been this constant outcry (after Tara became queer confirmed) of 'Do Emily next' or 'Why wasn't it Emily with a girlfriend!?' and 'Jemily needs to be canon in S17!' -- as if people believe their ships aren't worth anything unless they are canon.

That couldn't be further from the truth! Fandom is built on headcanons and fan interpretations and rare pairs and all types of shippers. Your ship does NOT need to be canon for you to enjoy it. I will ship Jemily forever, no matter what. I don't think there will be some magical queer plot in S17, at best, we might actually get to see Emily/JJ on screen together again and after the train wreck that was S16 -- I'll take whatever I can get.

And hey -- if I am completely wrong, if Erica Messer pulls a Korrasami out of her hat, I will be ecstatic. I will be happy to be proved wrong, but at the same time, I'm not going to lose sleep over it and I'm DEFINITELY not going to go hound the actors about it on social media.

Now that the tour is over, with the way everything on the tour went, what do you think was the reason because of which Kettler resigned? Allegedly, this tour was the last straw. If not, then at the very least he made sure he was not a part of it and made a point to resign just a day or 2 before it started. So I'm wondering what about this particular tour/trip/narrative/PR strategy made Kettler so frustrated that he resigned and went straight to the papers to put his POV forward. (I'm of the opinion that REden knows and did get the scoop directly or indirectly from Kettler himself)

And speaking of the tour, I'm still trying to figure out what they were there to do? What charities were they supporting? What work they did? What partnerships they forged or highlighted? What was the purpose of this? How did they pay for this?

If the VP invited on a whim, what was her intent? It pretty seemed like an influencer gig. Did they get paid, or was this completely sponcered? Since the VP is a govt official I don't think she would have been able to sanction all the expenses plus their appearance fee. Surely that would be a senseless govt expenditure and could count as corruption or personal gain by the VP.

I do get that Meghan is trying to forge a new type of influencer category where she (and her husband) act as important international soughtafter celebs and go to other countries to act like important people. And since she was at the forefront of this whole trip and it's PR campaign, I'm assuming they were marketing it as her work, not his. But what work did she do?

Surely, this kind of a gift is not sustainable on a long term. Where ever will they go next - soudi Arabia? Cayman islands? Afganistan (where Harry can talk about coming home and his nostalgia over his 2 army tours)?

I am getting increasiy bored of these two. They are not giving anything at all - no work. No workethic. no significant projects, even if failed ones. No long term impact. No products. Not even outright merching and brand deals. Their moves are so predictable that people had predicted nearly all of this way back in 2017/18 even before they got married, right up to the faux tours where Meghan would be front and centre.

So, what did this trip achieve? And what about this made Kettler quit?

I didn’t pay attention the trip so I can’t answer much of these questions. The only questions I can answer:

If the VP invited on a whim, what was her intent? Attention. She’s probably making a play for some kind of global role and wanted to leverage the attention the Sussexes brought for her own career or political aspiration.

Where will they go next?

No idea. I think it’ll depend on how they perceive their coverage from the trip. We’ll find out soon, because Meghan can’t help herself from clapping back.

Some options already in the mix is South Korea (for Invictus Games), back to Canada (to promote Vancouver IG 2025), Harry’s month-long trip back to the UK for his birthday, or wherever Soho House needs merching. (Australia Soho House should be opening soon, I think.)

There is gossip that Meghan has big plans for something at the end of October and that’s why they went in August, instead of November. But it’s just gossip.

What about this made Kettler quit?

No idea. But rumor is that he saw something very shady that may or may not have been unethical which may be or may be not related to Colombia, and he noped out of it.

Rumor tracking anon here - I don't have *that* article but I do have one from Vanity Fair about the 2017 BAFTAs (and Kate's first time accompanying William). I bookmarked the article because there's a line about Meghan in that is so wildly out of place that it made me verrrry suspicious about her:

In the grand scheme of things, Meghan in February 2017 was *not* important enough to be worthy of this kind of throwaway comment in the same breath as all those people. So then why would Vanity Fair do this? Always rubbed me the wrong way. But now, hindsight being 20/20, it tells us a lot.

I'm fairly certain that this is around when Sunshine Sachs and Vanity Fair were negotiating Meghan's cover because it's the first time her name was dropped with all these A-List celebs. I do think it's part of "everyone loves classy" but it's such a random throwaway it slipped under the radar. (And specifically my gut is telling me that the "my future sister-in-law" part was Meghan or Sunshine fishing for an invite to Pippa's wedding among other A-list freebies.)

The rumors were that she took photos of the Wales kids and was caught. Charles had her escorted out of KP and to the airport sometime in December or early January. It is said that Harry dumped her because she wasn't worth the drama she was causing with his family. Later when she flew out to Skippy's wedding, which she is said to have been given a passing casual verbal invitation at a house party, and then she and Harry slightly reconciled but she was still chasing after him to get his attention back. They fought a ton on that trip apparently. Which proves true from the beach photos that were taken. It was right after this she shut down her blog and IG and claimed she quit Suits for Harry.

Waking up to a SECOND Yoongi letter apologizing and now I'm just pissed off. I've been pissed off, but now it's like genuinely infuriating to me. An opinion/theory I have that is based on nothing but vibes, my opinion on relationships and and my love for armchair psychology is that I don't think Joe ever really planned on settling down with Taylor. I'm not saying he wasn't in love with her or wasn't committed to her when he was with her, but I think deep down he knew (maybe only subconsciously) that this wasn't going to be forever.

I remember as early as 2021 there were rumours that the two of them were engaged and last year there were "secret marriage" rumours. When me and my brother would have our celeb gossip sessions he was the one who said they probably were married and would announce it at a later date, whilst I didn't really buy it I did think that it might be a possibility given how long their very serious relationship has been going. Like in 2017 you had Taylor singing about wanting to be his endgame and their sex life. Then in 2019 she mentioned marriage several times and how she'll never get over it if she loses him, and then the following year you had her mentioning giving him a child. After all this you'd be forgiven for assuming it means that they've had the conversation about marriage and children being a foregone conclusion.

Because of this, plus them both being in their 30s last year there was no reason why there wouldn't at least be a ring given on bended knee. But then midnights came out and after listening to it, especially to lavender haze, I realised that man don't want her and that relationship isn't going to last all that much longer. That post where his inner circle knew the breakup was coming for a while does go well with my theory so I choose to believe it. (Confirmation bias and all that)

People who think that maybe it was Taylor that didn't want to settle down or get engaged or that she was okay going that long without a ring really need to look at the kind of woman Taylor is. She was raised in a wealthy white conservative republican environment where girls are taught your achievements are nothing unless a man has married you. She's been looking for a husband since she came of age which is maybe why she gets attached so easily and is so bitter when it doesn't work out. Or maybe because everything else came to her so easily without much work she thought a man would too. There is no doubt in my mind about who wanted out in that relationship.

I honestly understand why she's probably so embarrassed right now. Girl really went from "he better lock it down or I won't stick around" to "all anyone wants to know is if I'm your wife". And then she got dumped. She could have saved herself the trouble by putting her money where her mouth is and dipped.

When you get anons asking why someone who seems like a great guy would be with someone like her, I think whilst she did probably pretend to be someone who wanted the same things he did and he was in love with her so he went along with it, but I also think he wasn't 100% fooled which is why their relationship ending was just a breakup and not a divorce.

Is there anyone irl, like an actor or perhaps a celeb that you look up to or check in on periodically? I saw some in some of your other asks you've literally spoken with Eden and that's super cool! You've also said people recognized you at social events before too!

There's a few crew members I check in on every now and then, but I don't actually follow any of the actors. Eden was on Tangled Talk, but @kelseyfitzherbert did basically all the behind the scenes work to get her on there. The time she spent on the phone with us for the podcast was the only time I've spoken to her, so that was, like, a two hour conversation (including the initial call in, and the after-recording chit chat). If I brought it up with her, she'd probably remember, because how many Tangled-related podcasts has she been on? XD

I once hung out with Zachary Levi for an hour at Disneyland (in a group of 11), so he's aware of my existence, or was, but I don't expect him to remember me, specifically, at all.

I'm not so conceited as to think I'm particularly memorable to people with hundreds of thousands of fans. We talked, we hung out, but that doesn't make us friends. It means I got a couple of cool experiences. I try to shy away from parasocial relationships.

So, yeah, the only people connected to Tangled I keep in touch with at all are some of the crew members (both pre-production and animation).

As for people recognizing me, that was just at D23 Expo in 2017 (the same year/weekend I hung out with Zac). It's not like most people know what I look like, or like my voice is particularly distinctive. So even if they were staunch listeners of Tangled Talk, they probably wouldn't know my voice just by hearing me talk.

CDAN rarely got royal blinds before 2016/2017. They got them every once in a while, but no one ever paid much attention and they never got a whole lot of traction. It was readily accepted that those came from the Yorks, especially if they targeted the Cambridges or Harry. Blinds that targeted the Yorks were said to come from Epstein connections as warnings to Andrew. (Which on the one hand I'm skeptical of because the BRF has never reacted to blind gossip but on the other hand, this was a time when Andrew was absolutely gunning for his daughters to have/keep official duties so anything that risked making the girls look bad, he would've been all over to fix.)

Then Meghan came onto the scene in 2016 and CDAN started getting a ton of blinds about the royal family, especially about William and Kate. Those were all from her, and I think she was still leaking to CDAN about William and Kate up until 2021. Any of the blinds that attacked Meghan through 2019ish were from the Yorks, but I think they got out of it after Newsnight (which, speaking of Newsnight for a second, did you know they're making a movie out of that whole mess? Michael Sheen is playing Andrew).

I'm not totally sure who is leaking to CDAN now, especially about Meghan. Sometimes I think Meghan leaks shit about herself just to keep people talking about her. There are probably some people in Hollywood that she's pissed off who might be empowered to leak or that CDAN has industry connections, including contacts at WME, that they're hearing things from. But there is also the very real possibility that CDAN is making it up complete - they have admitted to doing that to other celebs.

The Yorkies seem like they've gotten out of that kind of stuff, but it's entirely possible Eugenie might still have connection and she's the one providing info on William and Kate, but even those have largely stopped too so I think she's cut off from the Waleses (or is at least on an information diet).

As for Deuxmoi, I think it's Abigail Spencer leaking on Meghan's behalf when the scoop was something positive. Or at least she was a few years ago, and now it's some poor intern at WME.

I don't think the blinds about Harry and Meghan are reliable. I haven't followed CDAN since before COVID but I'll look at the website after major Hollywood events like the Grammys and the Oscars to read about the after-parties - it seems like most of the blinds these days about the Sussexes are things that everyone can reasonably predict Meghan will do because she's a creature of habit: we know she's going to try and make it seem like she's "in" with Hollywood for the big events and the big parties.

hi, g! hope you've had a good day! i spent all of last night watching old 1d and h performances and i just got so emotional!!! the things they were going through and how much they confided in each other - gah! and just how talented and electric they were on stage together was unreal.

i will admit that i very rarely go back to watch h's solo performances bc the whole love on tour/fine line/harry's house era was filled w/ awful memories for me. the way harry was portrayed in the media along with the gp reaction + how incredibly toxic the fandom became just made everything overwhelmingly awful. i genuinely had to stop even listening to h's music bc the simple association made those bad feelings come back again.

it's the only reason i'm not excited about new music releasing soon. i love h and his music, but it still feels like it's only been a few weeks since he stopped touring. i'd love for him to take an even longer break just to make as much good music as he pleases and for the fandom to calm down before he goes back into it. ik he loves touring, but the idea of him going back just to see influencers/celebs/gen. rich people in the crowd who don't give a shit about him or his music and basically using him to boost their popularity is so disheartening.

I get it. It was a simpler time in 2017. Although, there was also a HUGE split in the fandom at that point that created some really rabid solos who attacked him over everything.

I think if it affects you that much, the only way to deal with it and to enjoy Harry’s solo music/tour is to remove yourself from fandom. I mean, you can work on why you feel so personally affected, but that’s likely to take a lot longer. ❤️

I think between 2015 and 2017 it's very likely that they were very off and on. I do think in 2017 particularly they were times when they were possibly on a 'break'. Since 2018 though I think they are pretty much commited to each other.

So, all this makes me thinks it's unlikely they'd be in a open relationship.... unless they arrangements with close friends... which would be weird I think.
