Disney channels first gay couple consists of a nerdy Jewish boy and a jock with a learning disability. they both mutually support and love each other for who they are without trying to change one another, they balance each other out and bring out the best parts of one another. The jock, TJ, helps Cyrus be bold, and Cyrus, the nerd, helps TJ be kind. They never lose faith in each other, and they judge. They are the first cannon gay couple on Disney channel.

let's talk about tj this episode
y'all this episode was so cathartic for all of us and so amazing for tj as a character. he literally had a full blown sexuality arc in the last episode of the season and it was subtle, but beautiful and gentle and amazing nonetheless.
TJ had a breaking free, so to speak. Out of the closet, with Kira, and away from a relationship he didnt want to be in. And, it was a realization as well. a realization of true feelings, sure, but moreso an understanding of where he wanted the future to take him.
And then, we have what I think may be the most important scene for TJ in the series: the Born This Way performance. You CANT tell me this scene wasnt a subtle coming out for TJ. The way he grabbed the attention from everyone in the room? as if he had a big announcement to make? the way he seemed nervous about beginning the song? and then CYRUS, his gay crush stepping in and singing it with him in the microphone? That was a gigantic step for TJ and symbolic of HIS journey to love himself. (If we're being totally honest, that whole thing was a wonderful acknowledgement of the impact and importance of this show for the lgbt community, but I digress.)
And then, of course, the bench scene. The whole bench scene. TJ telling cyrus his name was probably the most open we had ever seen TJ, and theres no doubt in my mind that that has to do with the previous two scenes in the episode; TJ finally realizing where he wants to take his future, and deciding that it was time to come out. He told Cyrus he could ask him anything, thus totally opening himself up, something we've never seen him do before. And then, we see him taking control of his journey; holding his crush's hand, and letting out a sigh of relief, as he had truly just done something new, something scary, and something he was unsure of. And he was brave enough to do it.

tj’s growth just between 313 and 320 is such an overwhelming and inspiring thing to watch.
kira came up to him and he felt threatened and insecure so he put his walls all the way up and made a poor decision to guard himself.
his face just after kira walks away, you can tell he’s overthinking every little thing he feels around cyrus. he’s scared. it leads him to hanging out with kira a lot. then flash forward to 320 and he shows up to the party with kira. they’re acting couple-y. then kira makes fun of cyrus and then you finally see tj stand up for himself. stand up for cyrus.
when she walks away, you see this face again.
“cyrus never made me choose.”
“i guess that answers my question. see you around.” and he has that feeling of insecurity again but you can also see the relief. he’s letting his walls down all on his own right there.
then you fast forward to born this way. he started that song. the music stopped and he started playing the song and all eyes were on him. it’s significant that they had tj start with the piano playing one of the gayest anthems ever. he’s glowing. literally glowing and he’s happy and he’s letting his guard down.
and then cyrus goodman starts singing and this dude lights up even more. i’ve never seen such a love struck expression. LOOK AT THIS.
he’s like in love with him and he’s singing and he couldn’t be happier. throughout the song he’s just, glowing. and cyrus comes to sing with him and they look at each other when they sing and they’re so happy. tj is so happy and comfortable. and he hardly ever stops touching cyrus like his arm is around him almost the entire time and he doesn’t care. he’s full of literal glee.
and then comes the bench scene and tj truly lets all of his walls down around cyrus. kira is gone. cyrus is there. he doesn’t have to hide. he opens up about his mom a little, just to let cyrus know. and then when he said “i’m not mysterious ask me anything” it felt like a parallel to “i’m not hiding” but he’s really not hiding anymore.
then he opens up about his name, cyrus goodman is the only non-kippen that knows his name. he’s really not hiding. then, then, THEN.
“is there anything else you want to know?” and then the hand
and you can tell the exact moment cyrus realizes truly what is going on. he gets all confident saying “is there anything else you wanna tell me?” and then... tj’s face got me. his face always gets me because you can always see his emotions.
“yeah.” he sounds so scared but he wants to tell cyrus and cyrus knows and you can tell tj has come full circle as a whole character. always scared to be open and always guarding himself behind a mean facade. to being open with the one person he can talk to like this. and then he’s brave. “is there anything you wanna tell ME?” and when cyrus says “yes” he’s confirming that holy shit he likes him back. his feelings were reciprocated. and the thing that makes me the most proud is they were surrounded by people and tj reached for cyrus’ hand. he grabbed his hand.
he interlaced their fingers and then he exhaled. he was scared but he took a chance, not knowing if cyrus reciprocated his feelings and when he realized, wow holy shit he does,he exhaled. he could breathe.
needless to say, thelonious jagger kippen I AM SO PROUD OF YOU.
