So, in Busman’s Homeymoon, Lord Peter buys Harriet Vane a mink cloak worth 950 pounds (according to the Dowager Duchess’ journal entry), but he buys Tallboys for “only” 650 pounds.

Even bearing in mind that real estate really did used to be cheaper, do you understand how that is possible? Or how to find out more about relative purchasing power? I used an online calculator website which gave me some figures, but it still seems insane that one could buy an entire Elizabethan farmhouse for 2/3 the price of a garment! Very curious to learn from others who understand this better than I do.

Ah, I see my esteemed colleague @oldshrewsburyian has also had some interesting thoughts on this, so I'll link that here as well before I begin.

So, it's a legitmate question, and there's no catch-all simple answer (in the gotcha sense of 'why didn't i know that bit of cultural Truth'), but there are mitigating factors that take it from a ridiculous price comparison, to merely outlandish. Even taking into account that the coat is quoted in guineas, not pounds, and that PW says the bank valued Talboys at £800 via a mortgage (the paid price was a discount, for paying in cash quickly, which is Plot Relevant), it gets us to roughly the same place, value-wise. Or shall we say PRICE-wise, rather than value, as I'll get into below. There's several factors at play here - they mainly relate to class, and spending power:

-The house is Not That Great, in terms of the kind of property that PW would usually be buying. I mean it is still a large-ish house, big enough to have 2 adults and small children in, but it's not what would be on his radar normally. The only reason they know about it, it that it's near a place where HARRIET grew up as a child. It's not getting any high marks in particular Beauty, Convenience, or Quality - the main reason HV's drawn to it is sentiment, rather than anything else. They both know that they will have to significantly add to it, and alter it, in order for it to be a comfortable home. That would usually be out-of-budget for someone in Harriet's position, who would expect to buy something that meets her needs 'as-is'. Most people looking at buying that house would be Harriets not Peters, so it might be a tough sell.

-The house has no power, and limited plumbing: There's dark references to DRAINS by the dowager duchess, it's entirely possible that this house has no modern plumbing at all - they make the comparison that the huge palace the Wimseys grew up in wasn't plumbed until recently, but then again they do have about 800 servants, whereas Talboys is just a regular house: they will have Bunter alone (at first), with an assist from Mrs Ruddle. There's mention of "a cistern" with some basic valves, but the scullery is mentioned as having a copper, from which hot water is "scooped into a large bath-can" - a copper being, simply, a large metal basin over a fire, in effect. No running hot water, maybe no flushable loos - it's a factor. They also talk specifially about having to electrify Talboys themselves - it's candles and lamps until then. It's fancy camping. By the mid-1930s, a lot of middle-class buyers would expect a little more convenience in both water and wiring, unless they had significant support staff, which Talboys would not be expected to house.

-There's probably no farm! It's a farm house - not a wider land purchase. People like PW's brother the Duke are wealthy primarily because they own land, not because of the big palace they have (which eats money, rather than generates it). The land is what gives them spending power, because other people are paying them rent to live on it, farm on it, or both. PW's own personal 'younger sibling' wealth is also mentioned somewhere to be primarily in real estate (assumed to be in London) - sad to say: he's a landlord, and that's why he's rich. Talboys, on the other hand, as a purchase, would not, in almost any way, be expected to generate revenue through either farming, agriculture, or charging rent. Until they invent house flipping in 80 years, or until the motorway goes through in 40 years, there's not much expectation that Talboys would increase all that much in value.

-Lastly, there's a massive disparity in what The Market Will Bear when we compare a basic residence vs a luxury item (like a mink coat) in the mid-1930s. This is not particular to that time, though. Like any first-year economics student will tell you, the price of something is not it's intrinsic value, it's what someone is WILLING to pay for it. If someone is willing to pay such a price, that's the price it will be. So, we're not comapring Objects, we're comparing Buyers: the the main purchasers of a slightly run-down farmhouse located nowhere special are Harriets, and main purchasers of mink coats are Peters. Talboys is priced for Harriets. The mink coat is priced for Peters.

Compare for example, a contemporary parallel: the Hermes Birkin bag. It's a leather handbag with a starting retail price of about USD 11,400. Just for the bag. Then, you have fancier versions of the fancy bag, eg wikipedia tells me one version sold at auction for USD 380,000 in Hong Kong in 2017. Now, the Harriets of today are not buying a Hermes Birkin handbag, but they are probably trying to buy slightly run-down houses outside urban centers for (one hopes) slightly less than 380k. The Wimseys of the worlds are clearly buying Birkin bags. In that way, it's actually pretty easy to get to a place where Person A might buy a single luxury item for X pounds, and Person B might buy a whole residence for X pounds, and neither feel like they'd done something insane. The key here is in a Wimsey/Vane marriage, they run up against this concept immediately, and repeatedly.

There's a good reason the first epistolary section of the novel is almost entirely taken up with money chat - the ring, the purchase of shirts from Burlington Arcade, the marriage settlement, the gift from the bride to the groom, the mink coat, the bitchy exchange between Helen and Harriet about HV being allowed "six free copies of her book" to distribute. These people come from 2 fundamentally different experiences of the world. They might have gotten engaged using the word 'Magistra', specifically to emphasise their fundamental equality (in the context of learning and the mind, to begin with), but it can't be denied: there's gaps that need to be bridged. They both know parts of their married life will be spent in attempting to do that, hopefully to their mutual satisfaction. Mention of a mink coat for 950 guineas is a nice, neat shorthand for illustrating what's still at play between them here.

During the time I had bought the keychains there was no option for double sided or single sided printing, nor did it state anywhere what kind of printing it would be. Based off of the images provided by the company/reviewers, the fact that the keychains are transparent, and the kind of keychain I was purchasing, I had assumed it was single sided printing which is what I wanted.

Turns out it was double sided printing the entire time, and they had admitted to that it was their fault for not specifying the lind of printing for the keychain. But because there was text in my design, all of the text on the back of the keychain was flipped. And there was at least 1 design that was completely missing the text and border on the backside.

I ended up having to talk to an employee about my issue and they tried to give me a $50 coupon as compensation, which is ridiculous considering I spent over $450 for this order.

In the end they're willing to remake the keychains to my specifications, but I still have to spend money on the shipping, which I also find a bit ridiculous. This is the first time I've had any problems with vograce but at this point I just wanna get my keychains and be done with it 😮‍💨

I was thinking of selling these as blind bags, where you get a random pin from the set. I see lots of other creators selling blind bags and I've always wanted to try it!

But as a buyer, I personally prefer picking my pins. So I could make a certain number of blind bags, available at a small discount; and a certain number of individual pins at normal price. If I made blind bags, I would make some posts on my social media so people could arrange trades in the comments.

y/n examined the store from the outside, silently praying that anton was right about them selling her brand. she sighed before opening the door.

"i'll fire you if you don't get a girlfriend in the next two months." the unfamiliar voice boomed throughout the small store. that's crazy, she thought.

"that's not fair! you don't even pay me to work here." y/n passed through the small isles, looking for the string section. she took notice of the barrel full of rosin. she would have to buy a new block soon.

"i would if you had a girlfriend to buy things for."

the boy scoffed. "that doesn't even make any sense."

y/n frowned when she realized none of the bows were on display. although the situation was very awkward, she knew she would have to get their attention if she wanted to find the bow. she slowly walked up to the counter. y/n rung the bell on the counter before fidgeting with her nails again.

"hi, sorry, how can we help you?" the older woman walked up to her, smiling. the younger boy followed her, his eyebrows furrowed. when he saw her, his gaze lightened up a bit.

"hello, my friend anton told me you sell fiddlover bows. is that true, because i didn't see any over there?" y/n looked between the two, waiting to see if any of them had the answer.

"oh, you are a friend of anton," the woman's smile grew. "he's my son's friend. such a sweet boy. anyway, we do sell those bows. they're just not on display because we've had a few of them get stolen."

"that's a valid reason," y/n agreed, giggling. she glanced over at the boy behind the counter, only to find that he was already looking at her. he had a mischievous look on his face.

"do you have any preference on the bow?" y/n had already pulled up a picture of the bow on the website, showing it to the woman. "do you mind if i take this? i'll only be a minute or two."

"i don't mind." the woman walked away with y/n's phone so now she had nothing to do while she waited. she looked back at the boy. "so you're friends with anton?"

he nodded. "yeah, he's my neighbor. i'm wonbin by the way,'" y/n introduced herself also. he paused and looked away. "this is going to sound extremely weird, but can you pretend to be my girlfriend?"

she blinked slowly before laughing in his face. "no? i don't even know your name. talk about stranger danger."

"no, yeah, you're right. but i need money and you can get a discount on violin stuff if we pretend to date." y/n thought about it, glancing around the store.

"okay, i'm not going to straight-up date you but you can tell your parents that we're talking. once i get to know you, then i'll consider the whole 'fake dating' thing."

"works for me. here's my number." he handed her a sticky note with a series of digits written on it. his mom walked back with a long box in her hands.

"okay, here's the 4/4 snakewood solo violin bow," she announced, reading off of the label. she scanned the box and added the discount, then told y/n the price. after she payed, the woman handed y/n the box, along with her phone, and smiled at her. "tell anton we said hi!"

"will do! see ya', wonbin." y/n waved and the boy gestured for her to call him.

wonbin's mom looked knowingly at him. she hip-bumped him. "what was that, bin?" wonbin rolled his eyes playfully and walked into the breakroom to get his phone.

I have some news guys.

After leaving my Etsy store to sit and run on it's own for a while this year, I've been informed that I will lose access to the funds I make on the site in 6 days until I submit my taxpayer ID which for me is my social insurance number. This is where I've decided to draw the line and pull my business from Etsy. I don't feel comfortable giving that info over to a site that can be hacked. I'll be taking down my store very soon and making arrangements elsewhere as there is no point in collecting funds I won't ever receive until they shut my store down in 60 days themselves.

This is all very abrupt and not at all how I was planning on the rest of the year going but you've got to roll with the punches and not sell your morals or gut feelings short. And I have a bad feeling about this.

It's a bittersweet moment because I really did love my little Etsy store and it was a big move for me to create my shop in the first place in March of 2020. However as time has gone on, Etsy has put out more and more questionable policies that I've never agreed with and until now been able to opt out of getting involved in. I can't opt out of this one as it comes from the Canadian government. And while looking into this policy I properly saw just how much money from sales I've made. To give you and idea, from a $3.00 purchase (which I was told was actually $3.30) I made $1.00. I also didn't realize that I can't opt out of paying to be in offsite Etsy ads anymore so I was automatically put into it and a lot of my sales have come from offsite ads this year so a lot more of my income than I thought was going to Etsy for that (nonconsensually).

And while I have you here, here's another issue I'd like to draw your attention to. This year they rolled out an offer to all sellers to get a discount on their fees if they shared a trackable link to their social media for their followers and friends to click on where their information would be tracked and essentially bought out by Etsy at the price of 4% off their Etsy fees. So just be careful out there. And my advice to anyone still selling on Etsy, pay attention to these offers of trading some of your personal information or doing a favour for them with your name on it in exchange for their basic service or an inconsequential deduction of fees. It's not right. Your income and your hobby shouldn't ever be treated like a bribe or a game.

At this point I don't care if anyone thinks I'm overreacting, these are my morals and principles and that's all I have to act on. And I know that people have been saying that Etsy is evil for a while to which I still don't agree with them. I have just been very passive about my income while my shop was up since Etsy took care of so much of the job and I justified the fees in the beginning because I saw it as paying them to do the stuff I didn't know how to do. That all changes now. The work I put out is worth more than my passive attitude towards it.

This thing will make it possible for me to machine quilt using my regular machine while treating it like a longarm machine. There's a very real possibility I have EDS. Even if I don't, I live with chronic wrist pain in both wrists, and tendonitis in my left hand and thumb. This device will serve as an accommodation for these issues.

What if the Obey Me! characters had an in-game store

i was playing 'Animal Crossing' and you know how every week a special villager comes and sells something on your island? So, I had a thought, what if there was something similar in 'Obey Me!' where each character had a store and appear randomly once a month to sell stuff.

I imagine an app on the home screen where players could buy special items at a lower price, the character that is selling would appear on one side of the screen with the other side having the items for sale (Something like the ending screen after an 'Akuber order')

something like this, but obviously instead of the rewards, it will have items the player can buy. the boy/girl running the store that day will make comments depending on your actions (if you take too long to choose, buying many items, buying none, etc).

for every character the items sold will be different;

Lucifer: Each time Lucifer appears he will sell one sin type of Devil Tree items, (eg. greed controller, greed megaphone, greed cellphone)

"Were you just planning on standing there?"

"I believe you are short on Grimm"

"Did you not count your Grimm before coming here?"

"Today's sin is... Pride."

"If you need some Grimm earlier... you could have asked me..."

Mammon: Mammon is similar to 'Redd' from 'Animal Crossing'. he will sell very high quality items like Devil Vouchers, UR+ jokers and such for Grimm. BUT the items from him only have a 1/20 chance of actually being the item you brought as it could yield nothing from all the Grimm spent... and all Mammon would say is all sales are 'Non-refunduble'.

JUST crossed my mind that i should share here the keychains (and standee) that arrived around a month ago with the end roll chibis i did. these ones and this!!

more rambling and also a small video of the chris and russell one under the cut!!

there's definitely some things i'd adjust if i could, or ever got more. especially with the chris and russell one, which is my personal fave by far otherwise 🥺💗 the translucent effect for the buildings ended up a little too much i think in hindsight sob, and the gradient in the one line was def a risk with that too

but since i have a few duplicates of everything—especially the russell keychain thanks to a nice discount for getting a few more—that could still use some love, i'm thinking i might try ko-fi or vinted (or mercari??) for selling them to anyone interested? i'm not very familiar with all that at all, so i'd be happy to know if anyone has a preference or suggestions there. i'm too intimidated by etsy for something so minor and unsure on how well doing it without a website involved would work :o although i can still consider that definitely at a much lower price than if they were anything more final/refined. honestly i'd feel better even giving them out for free, but my wallet is crying too much from the cost of the order HAHA... i'll make a proper post once i figure all that out 👍

Will the pins be avaliable even if ypu don't back them? I would love to buy but don't have money rn

If you miss the campaign, I'll have a post-campaign preorder store where you can get them at the discounted campaign price. After backers receive their pins, any leftover pins except the exclusive freebie pins will be available in my shops. I usually have at least a few leftovers of each pin after backers receive theirs so don't worry :))

Regarding the freebie pins: I was not planning to sell mine in my shops since they are meant to be exclusive. I have been offering them at in-person events though.

I think once I wrap up my pin campaigns next year, I might offer all the freebies I've made in one set online, for those collectors who missed out and can't visit me in person. But you wouldn't be able to purchase them individually.
