Weekly Update for 3 April, 2023

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the first weekly update of April!

Mind Games: Trepidation

So, where are we with MG:T?

As of earlier this week, I fully finished fleshing out Scene 1/4 of Chapter 6! I'm also on the very last choice of Scene 2 and it'll be finished, but it is a rather varied section as it changes depending on a choice you made earlier in the chapter, so it might take me a hot second to finish it off. Very exciting, however!

I'm also half-way done with Scene 3's roughdraft, and then all we'll have left is Scene 4, but Scene 4 is an alternate POV so there likely won't be any choices to write, just some variations, if any. We have only a little left to get through, so I'm very hopeful that Chapter 6 is still on track to be released this month!

Chapter 6 is also sitting at a little over 10,000 words! My goal is to hit at least 12,000, but I do feel this will be a shorter chapter, which is totally fine! There's quite a bit I want to go back later and add to, but for now, I am happy with how things have gone so far. Super happy, actually, as almost all the choices I've written so far will have impact as the series progresses, either from you guys setting up more customization or by what you choose to reveal... or keep hidden. And some other interesting things, hehe.

But, overall, I am very satisfied with how Chapter 6 is progressing, and it will all be released as one major update (might also add some other stuff to update along with it, maybe more achievements, other stuff tbd). We will be following the same update pattern as last time: Patreon, Discord, public. I'm really excited to get it out to y'all, as the friend I drop snippets to and discuss stuff with to brainstorm has been STOKED the entire time we've talked!!

Now, as a fair warning, progress this coming week is very likely to be slow. As I posted on here before, my mom has only been home a few days after a 16-day stay in the hospital as she developed gangrene near her broken hip, and she has a lot of care we have to give her. I'll be going this week to finish my training on how to change her bandages (I actually know how to do it, there's just one specific part I'm not so good with, so her wound care nurse is gonna make sure I have that down pat), as I will have to do so on the weekends and any day her home health nurse or wound care nurse are unavailable. Quite a bit of pressure!

And, I also know most of you guys are aware The Wayhaven Chronicles by the amazing @seraphinitegames (just in case you aren't) has its third book releasing this week, and I am gonna be very honest, I'm gonna be absorbing it through my very eyeballs LOL. I am going to be diving in whole-heartedly to enjoy Mason's route and possibly A's or Nate's.

I've also really been in the mood to play games lately, so I'm planning to take time out to indulge a little bit, as I took a good... 5? 6? months or more away from gaming much outside of recording, and given I have Fatal Frame 4 and the OG Resident Evil 4 to lets play... WELL, I am definitely considering dropping loads of time into both and just relax when I can this week!

This Blog in 2023

So I didn't start this thing too long ago but I wanted to look forward at 2023 and the ways I intend to use this space. I make no secret that this space exists primarily to get people to go give me money on https://www.patreon.com/alexissara or https://ko-fi.com/alexiss or to check out work I am making or to get people to hire me for projects. Still if that was all I was doing, I probably wouldn't bother. My other goals with this blog are to engage other TTRPG creators and talk about queer art with other fans of queer art.

To that effect I am attempting to keep up a flow between posts about my own work and posts about fandom, other people's work, media I've consumed, etc. This space unlike my for fun blog isn't just gonna be full of gay art reblogs but instead always have some kind of professional air to it. Like my art is inherently political so I am sure I will be making political engagement and stuff but I am aiming to always keep it in the context of media. All my hot takes or really nerdy but not high value thoughts will be elsewhere.

My intended flow for here is about 2 posts a week. 1 Nerdy, one related to art I am working on. I figure the fanish stuff will get eyeballs on the more professional stuff. I don't have a fixed day for these two posts, it's whenever I write them that they will go up.

I do aim to try and engage other designers thoughts more and find more people to like add to the discussion to rather then just starting one.

In terms of creative works I am going to talk about I'll be winding down chatting about Falling Deeper as it reaches it's final stretches. I don't want to talk to much about things as they start slightly shifting and moving around before we pitch it, hopefully get it picked up and then announced. Once Falling Deeper is at a publisher and announces itself officially there will likely be a torrential wave of me chatting about Falling Deeper. Between now and then it will come up but I don't intend to, at least not very often, zoom in on a piece of design and the process to do so.

I hope y'all will enjoy my thoughts and musing as we go into the year of the bunny, the best year in the cycle.

Minority morlock 7.4% pseudo empire 5.4% minority morlock 28% miscellaneous 1.2%, there's a further drop coming minority warlock will be down to 27.6% headed up it's 41.3% and they're dropping steadily 1% today there's still a humongous number of them and you wonder what's going to happen and Titan is not a huge war or the other three it will happen when they try to steal ships Tommy have and all of them will gang up on him the pseudo empire and the Macklemore lock and minority morlock and it will spell the end for some of them mostly Macklemore lock and a big chunk of the pseudo empire they go around and say they're fine and they seem to think they're doomed and they are seeking recompense and shelter and all sorts of stuff they get their butt speed in but this is a cycle that's beginning. Right now we have an action that's planned they're going to attack in the Western hemisphere the bunkers everywhere of the pseudo empire including the mainland areas and islands and there are also attacking the regular topside bases and 100% of them and they're 50% out still and they're also going after laser basis they had them down a quarter now they're going to try and get them down to a half operational there's a few other things that they're doing the morlocks are attacking them in situ and they're not back in town because when they do they get hit and they get taken they're also doing that to take the entire fleet as they plan to and they're bothering her son their side none of his mouth and he says I won't Back you and I won't support you I know you're trying to take The fleets it's kind of your plan and I already talked about it with your head guy Ryan so they go talk to him when he says yeah I told you that and we'll go over it. That's going to happen and they'll seek all of their ships and they do gain a ton of them by the way it becomes a war they also lose track of things yes I may kind of get kicked out of Florida right now there's an evacuation

How to make F/GO sprite comics

Saw in one of the tags someone wondering about how we make these, so here ya go! A tutorial on how we personally make these things! We'll try to keep it simple for ya dw.

First thing's first, the most important part: the actual dialogue box.

We keep this on roughly 80% opacity, but you could go a bit lower if you wanted I think.

Then, if you want a dialogue option, here's this bit too, just for good measure:

That's probably among the hardest to get your hands on, but also this is assuming tumblr doesn't fuck up the transparency. If it does, I'll point out where you can crop 'em yourself later.

Next up: the font! It uses something like FOT-SkipStd-B, which you may or may not already have installed on your computer, so double check before downloading anything ofc.

Now, we just kind of eyeballed the exact placement and font size, but we use 19pt font and 125% line spacing and it looks pretty alright.

But, just leaving the text as-is will still look super flat and jarring, so you gotta add a bit of a gradient effect to it as well.

It might go by a different name in your program, but in Krita, all our gradient bars are set to inherit alpha (transparency) from the layers below it in its group, meaning the "Gradients" layer folder will only be visible over anything solid from the Nameplate, dialogue option, and Text Box layers here (aka, it'll only show up over any text itself).

And that should cover most everything for the text! Next up, the expression sheets!

You can usually find most any character's expression sheet from the images section of the fgo wiki, where you can then slap it down, do some select/cut/pasting of each expression off the sheet, and line it up with the original sprite itself like so:

We find that numbering them and giving a short description of what expression it is helps a lot when digging for the exact face you want. Turns out, at least the first 4-6 expressions off most everyone's sheet are gonna be the same general emotions too, btw! Some have duplicates though for simplifying coding things across ascensions, so be aware of that as well.

And finally, the backgrounds. This one's kind of spread all over the place, so I'll drop a bunch of links and you can take your pick.

First is the Kyuburu user blog off the fgo wiki that has a lot of the Part II onward story/events in a pretty well organized fashion that's easy to look through and find what you need. Only problem is it doesn't seem to have much of the earlier stuff, so you'll need to look somewhere else for that.

Second is this asset dump that I don't remember where I grabbed it from, but has a lot of stuff that's pretty well organized, but only up to LB 1 I think. When I said earlier about if tumblr fucked up the transparency, file 3 under User Interface has the raw asset sheet it's from, so you can scrap it together if need be.

This asset dump from this thread seems to be more up-to-date though (through LB 6.3 I think?) so you'll probably have more luck with this one for your general needs.

And finally, if you're looking for something harder to find (like the more recent JP content), you can go digging around the Atlas Academy Database and look for the cutscene scripts of what scene you're wanting, and it should have links to the BG and the expression sheet of whatever's there at that moment. It might be a little messier to dig through though, so give the other stuff a look first before resorting to this.

And that should be mostly it! The most difficult part is just getting things initially set up, and each expression sheet takes a hot minute to get sorted out, but I just do all my work in the same file so you can just re-use everything you pull together and you'll be set.

It's pretty fun and easy once you get the hang of it, so best of luck and have fun!

As a broke student who didn't grow up learning how to cook, any "how to cook and eat cheap for newbs" tips would be MUCH appreciated

Ask and you shall receive!

Meal Planning:

Figure out what you enjoy eating. That can mean cuisine or specific ingredients; for instance, I love Indian and Mediterranean food. It helps with planning meals.

Plan your week's dinner ahead. If you're just starting out, that can be intimidating, so just plan 2 or 3. Use the above tip as a guide to figure out what dishes you can make, but I will also suggest my favorite easy dishes below to get you started. Make a list of ingredients you need for your weekly meal.

Keep a list of recipes you like -- I have a google doc for this purpose. Then when it's time to plan my weekly meals, I just scroll through my list, pick a few, and write down the ingredients.

If you're living by yourself, you can totally cook less frequently in larger batches, and just eat leftovers on in-between days.

Shopping efficiently:

Part of this is just learning your grocery store. When you get used to shopping for ingredients every week, you will quickly learn where most items in your store are located.

When drafting my grocery list, I often take the extra five minutes to organize it by category. And after a little experience, you can order it sequentially based on the store layout. E.g., my store entrance is by the vegetables, so I'll put those first on my list, then all the fruits, snacks, dairy, etc.

Always check your list against your fridge/pantry before you leave the house, so you know already what you do/don't have.

General Cooking Tips

Cold onions won't make you cry. Keep a few in your fridge.

The finer you mince something, the quicker it cooks -- and burns. That is why recipes add garlic at the end.

Most meats can be substituted for each other, especially if it's cut up/ground. It'll taste different but still good.

Frozen spinach can be added to basically any sauce-y or soup-y dish as a veggie source. Spaghetti sauce, lentil dahl, chicken soup...

If you're scared of overcooking/undercooking, slow cookers are your best friend. You can get them at thrift stores for like $5.

The most versatile dried spices to keep stocked: cumin, chili powder, paprika, cinnamon, and oregano. Next would be basil, thyme, ginger, garlic powder, bay leaves.

Fresh spices to keep stocked: garlic cloves, limes, lemons. Seriously, constantly ask yourself if the food would taste better with some fresh citrus juice. The answer is almost always yes. Cilantro, too, if you like a lot of Latin, South Asian, and Middle Eastern cuisines.

Prep all ingredients before you start cooking - chop, dice, etc.

Below are some of my go-to meals when I was in college and didn't have a ton of time to cook. At the time, I lived on roughly $20/week for groceries, so they're also extremely cheap (although your cost might vary depending on where you live and shop). I've included my rough price per [hearty] serving.

I don't have the recipes to share, because I kinda just eyeball everything now, but any recipe you find online should be easy due to the simple nature of these dishes. I can share my own specific recipes upon request.

Chicken Korma: Just chicken, onions, coconut milk, tomato paste, and spices served on whatever rice I have around. Super tasty at about $1.50/serving. Lentil Dahl is very similar but sub chicken for lentils.

Beef Stroganoff: Ground beef, onion, sour cream, beef bouillon, egg noodles, mushrooms, frozen peas, spices. $2.00/serving.

Greek Meatballs: Seriously so good. I usually do half ground turkey, half pork sausage, bake them, and serve on rice and greens with tzaziki sauce. Easy to make a ton and freeze for later. $1.75/serving.

Turkey Chili: Literally dump a bunch of stuff in a slow cooker. Top with sour cream, cilantro, corn bread. like $1.50/serving.

Fried Rice: Just fry leftover rice with whatever veggies are on hand. So cheap. $1.30/serving. Throw in an egg for protein.

Burrito Bowls: Or tacos. Make great lunches, too. $2.00/serving.

Mac and Cheese: The homemade stuff. So enriching and only $1.75/serving. Great with frozen peas, too.

Learning how to budget for groceries is a whole different topic that deserves its own post. But I hope this is at least partly helpful for getting started!

on a totally unrelated discourse note: i've been coming across more of these on ao3 at a worrying rate. ppl are posting works with nothing but a request to help the poster find a specific fic. disclaimer: even tho i was a tag wrangler for a while, that doesn't mean i speak for all tag wranglers. That said, those 'fics' drive me up the wall. i'll sometimes politely comment to kindly remind the poster that ao3 is an archive for transformative works and if they would like to engage with the fandom, they have plenty of other avenues-like tumblr-to make the same request. posting this sort request as a fic, unnecessarily adds to tag wranglers workloads who are already struggling to keep up with the sheer volume of work being posted. i'm not smart enough to explain why this is problematic beyond saying it's work and time and volunteers have enough on their plate. so even if it is only one fic with a few tags, more and more ppl doing it: they build up. basically, i think it's inconsiderate behaviour-to other readers searching the tags and to the wranglers who have to sort them. if you're looking for a fic and want to ask people: please do not post a work on ao3 tagging all your relevant ships, characters etc, to try and find it. please try to search through the extensive, functional and innovative tagging system and search function. there's tutorials on how to do it. try googling. try researching. and if you absolutely cannot find it: please go on fandom socials like tumblr etc to ask the community. ao3 is not built for this kind of interaction yet. i might be wrong and i trust you to correct me if i am.

Yeah, I see more of them these days too... though they do get reported pretty fast. I don't think the rate is so high that it really endangers most people's AO3 browsing experience, and ficsearches often use already-wrangled tags, but I do want to finish my personal 2021 AO3 Guide with some power user stuff but also more pointed tips for n00bs from Wattpad.

Some people when confronted are like "Oh shit. I knew it wasn't preferred, but I didn't know it was directly against the rules" and I think they're operating in the paradigm of sites with shitty search still. Like... on Wattpad, there's no index of everything, so you're not as in people's faces with your off topic spam crap. It's also more common to post "discussion books" and to take shit down quickly after it has served its purpose.

I guess what I'm saying is that I would not assume malice. Some people may just need some pointers and context. And while official FAQs and the ToS exist, I don't think that's the format most people absorb the info from best--not to mention the fact that official rules do ban fic searches as works (in that they are not fanworks), but official policy is "tag how you want" without many tips for what your options are.

As for why fic searches are rude to post, AO3 is not a big corporate site with a bajillion paid staff. It has a narrow and specific mission and is paid for by your fellow fandom members out of their own pockets. Posting cruft that is not the target content of fanworks potentially drains resources from your fellow fans due to limited staff time for tag wrangling, for looking at abuse reports on rule-breaking works, etc. It's also rude because AO3's 'show everything in this tag by date' format means your non-fanwork is shoved under everyone's eyeballs constantly. You're being way more intrusive than on sites where things are harder to find and already more ephemeral.

Her name is Lilith (Lily) and she's a cryo catalyst user from Mondstadt and a senior member of the investigation team. She was childhood friends with Kaeya and Diluc but the Crepus incident pulled them apart. I don't have too many details of her backstory pinned down yet but I've already figured out all her skills and talents and her voicelines lmao so I guess I'll share those instead:

About Kaeya - Friendship: Captain Kaeya… he's an enigma alright. It took me years just to get under that mask of his, and even now I'm still not sure if what I'm seeing is the real him. That said, once you get to know him, he's a loyal and reliable friend. The best anyone can ask for.

About Kaeya - Eyepatch: Kaeya's eyepatch? Why are you asking me?…you think because I'm the closest to him that I would know what's under there? Haha, don't be ridiculous, I hardly know him well enough to pry into his secrets.

About Diluc: I knew him when I was still a knight in training. He was… different back then… happier. Now, after all that's happened… well, best if you go talk to him yourself if you want to know more.

About Albedo: He's brilliant! I admire him a lot—not just for his alchemical genius, but for his dedicated work ethic. Unlike a certain other captain whose name I won't mention, Captain Albedo would never drink on the job.

About Jean: Ah, Acting Grandmaster Jean… though, she's been doing this for so long I feel like she should just take the title of Grandmaster. She seems to be good at everything except taking care of herself. Maybe I should bring her some lunch again today…

More about Lilith - I: My research? Oh, you misunderstand. I'm merely a member of the investigation team, not an alchemist. However, I have helped Captain Albedo with various experiments, so I've picked up a few things.

Kaeya's About Lilith: Lilith? Heh, I've known her for quite some time now. Yes, we're friends. Are we close? Hmm… let's just say that she understands me in a way that most people in Mondstadt cannot.

Fun facts/backstory?:

Kaeya calls her his little lily (only in private or when he's trying to tease her)

She and Kaeya drifted apart after Crepus' death, but once Diluc returned to Mondstadt Kaeya began approaching her once again. They rekindled their friendship but Lilith knows Kaeya's keeping secrets from her. She just hopes he can one day trust her enough to reveal the truth.

Lilith got her Vision when the library of Mondstadt caught fire (this is canon but it happened like way back in the day so I'm bending the timeline a little lol) and she rushed in to save the books. This was before she became a knight and was just working as a helper around the library (hence her voiceline about Lisa). She was able to save several rare manuscripts thanks to her newfound power keeping the flames at bay. Afterward she was awarded a medal by the Grandmaster but she always considered the Vision her true reward. This event is also what pushed her to become a knight in earnest so she can use her powers to protect Mondstadt

I just realized that both of my Genshin OCs' visions match the characters I paired them with lmao

As a playable character she'd likely be a main/sub DPS whose focus is critting the hell out of your enemies. She'd synergize well w cryo resonance. You'd want her on a freeze team bc her charged attack summons an icicle and counts as a heavy attack so it can deal shattered damage

Is there a cyro catalyst in genshin yet? I don't think so (maybe signora but she's not playable yet) but it's such a good fucking concept and I want it. Can I say how fucking hot it is when characters don't pry into each other's business? Just having that mutual trust that you can take care of whatever you're dealing with, and if you can't, you can come to me for help without feeling ashamed. I'm not self-reflecting at all, what do you mean? But I'm enjoying this dynamic a lot. Feels very healthy and I support that. But hey, double cryo has a pretty good element synergy bonus haha. Chickpeas of the High Seas, a Tuna Salad Recipe for Plant Based Pirates

So tuna salad might not be everyone's favorite sandwich topping, as a matter of fact it might even be no one's favorite sandwich topping, but if there's one thing that's for damn sure, a tuna salad craving can be fucking hard to ignore. However, if there's one thing I've learned in my years as a broke vegan, it's that chickpeas make a damn good first mate for many of your swashbuckling kitchen adventures. Hoist the Jolly Roger fuckers, we're sinking that smelly tuna boat for good!

What you need:

Prepared Chickpeas (I was extra this time and cooked them myself, but canned works every bit as well)

Diced Red Onion, because why not make it pretty

Diced Celery because crumch

Pickle Relish

Vegenaise or whatever other mayo substitute you have handy, you could probably also use avocado, but only if you're a millenial

A sheet or two of Nori Seaweed

Salt and Black Pepper

Dill Weed (optional, just like most of these ingredients)

I didn't list the exact amounts of the ingredients because it's the kind of thing that tends to turn out better if you just eyeball (or eyepatch) it and sample it along the way, and doing so would just be doing a lousy disservice to the simplicity of this recipe. Also you can sub almost any of the ingredients for whatever it is you like in your tuna salad. Are you fucking weird and like apples in it? Fine then put your gross apples in it, just stay the fuck away from me.

How to make it:

So start off with your prepared chickpeas, put them in a large sealable container. That's right, you're going to make this AND store it in the same container. This is the pinnacle of vegan convenience.

Alternatively you can put it in a blender, I guesss. It'd save you from having to do a lot of chopping which is cool, but I don't let anything go to waste and there's so many things I'd rather do with my day that don't include scraping tuna salad off of blender blades.

Also, using a blender undercuts the best part: Smashing!!!

Okay so I lied, smashing can actually be cruelly tedious. Just be smarter than me and use something better than a fork. You wanna try your best to mash it to the point that there's no more full beans, some halfies might escape your clutches, but who are you trying to fool anyways? Keep it up until the consistency is like that of, well, tuna salad.

Next thing to do is dice up some red onion into little pieces

Cool put them babies in the mashed chickpeas, and do the same with some celery

Since we're mixing this all up into a tasty vomit-like substance (do I talk about vomit too much in my recipes?), I usually just don't fucking care what it looks like; so what I like to do is chop chop cop widthwise and then just go fuckin ham on the pile until it's mostly little pieces.

Fold them in and realize you added way too much fucking veggies

Toss some relish on there, it'll make yer paw proud

Resist the urge to transfer it to another container.

When you've got all that mixed together, get out your mayo substitute and put a couple of big ol' globs on there, as many as you need to coat all the stuff

Mix it all up and continue resisting the U R G E

When it's all mixed up get out one of these. It's called seaweed, and it makes stuff taste like it came from the sea.

Get out two sheets and toast em over the stovetop. CAREFULLY. On LOW heat. These may be the tortillas of the sea, but if you try to toast them like a tortilla you're going to have a bad time.

When you got em all roasty toasty, crunch them up into as little pieces as possible and put em in the salad. The best way to do this is to put them in a ziploc bag, tie the bag to a skateboard, and do a whole bunch of mega rad skate tricks until there's nothing in the bag but ocean dust.

When it's all mixed together it'll look something like this, I guess

Add the salt and spices to taste, and when it's how you like it put it in a sandwich

There's a lot of ways you can fuck around with this recipe; if you're more of an egg salad kinda person, use Indian black salt instead of seaweed. If you're incredibly boring you probably prefer chicken salad, just don't add either. Just a reminder, this recipe is mostly just a very loose guideline and mainly just serves as an example. Put whatever the fuck you want in it, and do whatever the fuck you want with it.

Aside from the classic tuna salad approach, my favorite thing to do with this technique is to make spicy tuna for sushi. Just lose the veggies and add sriracha, toasted sesame oil, and rice vinegar when you're adding the mayo. I'll provide the photographic evidence when I get better at rolling sushi, because as of current my sushi rolling skills are dogshit.
