Oh, my mom loves Niall’s album too. But I don’t think she “knows” any of the lyrics,jajaja. Though, she knows the hmmmm in This Town. But that’s all. She and my sister, both separately were like: “oh! who’s him??” When they heard Fire Away. And I was like: “ehhhhh, it’s Niall’s album, so guess who’s it?? What, you like it? See, Harry’s not the only one who can sing…” jajajajja. It’s because of comments like this, that they think I don’t like Harry. And I get so offended when they hint at it! Harry’s and Niall’s albums have been lining in my car since they were released. I had Harry’s playing in a loop till I got Niall’s one and I interchanged them. Then Harry’s came back a month or so before his concert. And now it’s time for Niall’s again. (You can’t imagine how hard it’s being writing this with honey laying on my arm!! AND WHAT DID YOU DO WHEN YOU REALIZED YOU WERE WATCHING BLACK MIRROS BACKWARDS??? I’ve watched canter 1 and 2 of ST afterwards, but I hadn’t gotten to watch the whole thing yet. I can’t stand to be looking at a screen for 50minutes without doing anything. And don’t get me wrong, lol, I can be on tumblr for hours, jajaja, but a have to move my hand, and I can go from a blog to another… y'know, jajajajaja. And when I watched chapter 7 of ST i was like, okay… now they have to investigate what happened… or a guessed they would be doing flashbacks… jajajajajaja. Then I realized my mistake and thought I was stupid, 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣“I see you from a different point of view🎶🎶” ( sorry, that’s me singing,jajajaja, Seeing Blind. I LOVE that song)And shows have disappointed me in the sense that they turn out to have an awful ending (seriously, I know you do it for the audience, but end a show how it deserves it, don’t turn it into shit just for a handful of money); or bc they just end it bc they don’t have enough audience. It’s always a matter of audience,jajaja.if they have a lot, they want to explode it. And if they don’t have enough they finish it ASAP. 😒

Honey is a menace, yeh, I couldn’t love him more,jajajaja. He can’t see me petting Liam, he gets jealous and comes to me and headbutt my hand so I pet him too. And Liam is so patient with him. They’re totally like liam and Louis, jajja. Hey! did I tell you the story about when I got Liam? no!! Well, someone gave my dad 4 kitties (they were sooooo small). So, guess their names (it was post March 25, 2015…) yes!! They were named (by me) Louis, Niall, Harry and Liam, jajajajajja. But Harry died a couple of days later, because he was really really young. He couldn’t survive without his mom ☹️. And the other three, my dad took them to a place we have were he has a little garden (?) with vegetables and chickens and proper farm-y, jejeje. I wasn’t too (any) into cats back then, so… Then he brought home one of them, to have our home free of mice. AND IT WAS LIAM!! And I adopted him. I took care of him. We started loving each other. And he became useless with mice, jajaja. He’s totally domesticated now 😝. And that’s his story. The rest? Louis became a big alpha male at their new home. But s car ran him over last summer, and he died 😔. And Niall is a female, jajajajaa. And I hate her. Because she hasn’t been able to keep her kitties alive once!! (She’s pregame again, and we’re praying this time she knows who to be a mom🙏🏻) Ah!! And Honey had siblings the other day!! The guy who gave it to my dad is my brother’s friend and he show him a pic. There are two white cats!! I WANT THEM!!! But they don’t let me have anymore cats! Jajajajaja.

Hey, we might have in common the reason why we started liking tats, jajajjajaa. And, well, to piss off the family is as good a reason as any other,jajajaja. And why are dads like that?? When my sister and I got our lips pierced he went to pick up at the train station and as soon as he saw us he turned around and walked to the car without saying a word,jajajajja. I HAD TOLMY PARENTS WE WOULD BE DOING IT!! I asked my mom:hey mom, if a get a 10 in maths, can I get a piercing?? And she say okay. Oh, louis has a BIG responsibility on his hands. He will be killing a lot of people when he puts out his album. He has to chose the proper songs to do it. It will be considered a massive destruction weapon, so he better be careful. But god, for real, when will Louis and Liam release their albums. At this pace, Harry and Niall will be releasing their second one before LiLo has finished their respective tours. And when they finish, Narry will have release their second one, and will be promoting them. So Lilo will start working in their seconds one. And… and… AND ONE DIRECTION WON’T COME BACK EVER BECAUSE THEY CAN FIX A DATE WHERE ALL OF THE BOYS HAVE NOTHING TO DO, AND WHAT WILL I DO??? 😭😭😭😭😭 (sorry, I panicked a bit there,oops).

Uggggg, I can’t stand raeggeton either. I can’t stand the music, argggg. Or the culture of it (the how it treats women, and glorifies sex). I can’t I can’t.and you can’t go out without hearing it. My friends and I went on road trip once. And it was my friend’s car. And she only listens to raeggeton. And after 10, 15, 40? minutes I had to ask her “will this song ever end???” And she told me it was already a different one. And I swear I almost jump out of the car,jajajajaja. WHEN ONE DIRECTION began an extended hiatus at the end of 2015, much was made of the friendships and alliances within the world’s biggest band.

LOUIS TOMLINSON was the natural leader of 1D and keen for the group to continue their chart-conquering progress.

But his former BFF HARRY STYLES was ready to go on an indefinite break, leading to understandable tensions within the group.

In part two of his revealing world-exclusive interview, Louis is brutally honest about that difficult period, shining a light for the first time on how the decision to split was made.

He says: “It was an uncomfortable time more than anything.

We’ve always had a level of respect for each other in these meetings and we always said that 100 per cent honesty and openness is so important if you’re going to get on as a band.

“It made those situations a little bit difficult because I felt like I really was building up confidence in myself and in my place within the band and as a songwriter in the band.

“I could feel that potentially it was going to be a break. What was difficult was trying to understand how long that might be.

“So that process was kind of a little uncomfortable.

“You’re asking guys who have grown up being best friends to make selfish decisions, which they should do, based on themselves.

“But it doesn’t change the fact that it was difficult for me to accept at first.”

However, 18 months on, with the launch of a promising solo career, Louis’ opinion has changed.

He says: “If you asked me now if I think it’s the wrong decision, I don’t think it was.

“I think the market and the fans and everyone had had so much of One Direction that regardless of any individual ventures, the market could do with a two-, three- or however long break away from us.”

Louis — who yesterday released his new single Back To You with rising star BEBE REXHA,— is honest that he is not as close to Harry as NIALL HORAN or LIAM PAYNE.

He says: “There’s no politics or anything. Inevitably in a band, you’re going to get some people who get on really well and some people who get on quite well.

“I have forever had a very, very high level of respect for Harry.

“He’s great in this situation, he’s great on stage, he’s a great musician and artist. It’s just one of those things that happens naturally in a band.”

Louis and Harry’s friendship was also dogged by a ridiculous five-year conspiracy by a group of determined fans known as Larries.

They believe that the pair are in a romantic relationship that was covered up by 1D management, SIMON COWELL and even me (I promise you I’d have been delighted to report that Harry and Louis were an item if that were the case).

Sadly, Louis admits the pressure from Larry conspiracy theorists was a factor in their friendship struggling, especially given the serious relationship he has with girlfriend Eleanor Calder.

He says: “I’ve never actually been asked about it directly. It’s a funny thing.

“It kind of happened naturally for me and Harry because a certain amount of the fans drew up this conspiracy.

“When it first came around I was with Eleanor, and it actually felt a little bit disrespectful to Eleanor, who is my girlfriend now.

“I��m so protective over things like that, about the people I love. So it created this atmosphere between the two of us where everyone was looking into everything we did.

“It took away the vibe you get off anyone. It made everything, I think on both fences, a little bit more unapproachable. I think it shows that it was never anything real, if I can use that word.”

In recent months I’ve asked Liam, Niall and Harry whether 1D could re-form without Harry or with former bandmate ZAYN MALIK.

Louis is clearly surprised by the question and takes a long time to think before replying: “When Zayn left, it still felt like One Direction, but we still didn’t feel like the whole.

“So then to even take maybe Harry out as well — it’s something that I can’t ever imagine, really.

“I feel like it’s got to be for the fans, and not for the three that want to get back together.”

Louis is clearly keen for the band to get back together, but he understands that Harry — currently promoting his big-screen debut in the film Dunkirk — has not yet made a decision.

He says: “Harry is actually an inspiring person to watch as a businessman, as a musician. He doesn’t really lose, Harry.

“He’s a very, very hard worker and his potential is massive in so many different fields.

“So I don’t know the answer, but if I’m Harry . . . I don’t know yet.

“Honestly, I just think it’s too difficult to say, especially with someone like Harry, who’s got so much potential

“It’s just kind of a confusing place for him to be as an individual, to be like, ‘OK, what is next?’ ”

1D fans are asking exactly the same thing . . .

THE end of 1D was hard on all the boys – and now Louis has revealed how upsetting it was after their final concert in Sheffield.

He said: “I’ve got this video from the last show. There’s a minute of me and Niall hugging, just kind of sobbing like, ‘This is f***ing crazy.’”

Louis was always close to Niall, but being apart hasn’t dampened their friendship.

He added: “Niall’s the best. We just get so excited about each other’s s**t.” Cute.

HE was discovered on The X Factor, and it was on that stage that One Direction gave their final performance in December 2015.

But Louis has admitted he felt frustrated last summer when he wasn’t given a judging role following lengthy discussions about replacing NICK GRIMSHAW.

He said: “It was something that I would have liked to have done. But it’s business. That’s how it works.

“It was kind of surprising to see me essentially being replaced by LOUIS WALSH.”

But the Just Hold On singer held no grudge against show boss SIMON COWELL.

He is the only 1D member to sign with Cowell’s Syco label after the pop guru masterminded the group’s success.

Louis said: “Simon has always been willing to listen. It was a no-brainer to me.”

It has certainly worked well so far.

FROM London to LA, Louis has lived around the globe since 1D began.

But he still cherishes his home town Doncaster, where he shot the video for his new single.

He said: “I love it. I feel like I owe people from Doncaster. But I just get this feeling . . . I want to push Doncaster on everyone.”

Louis, whose baby son Freddie Reign lives in LA with his ex Briana Jungwirth, added: “LA’s very different to Doncaster. The people are chalk and cheese.

“I obviously cherish my time with my son and it’s fantastic for work and the weather is great, but I do cherish my time back home.”

LIAM PAYNE and CHERYL are one of the most loved-up ��couples in pop, but even Louis didn’t quite believe they were together at first.

Asked if he thought his bandmate was joking when he confided in him about his relationship, Louis said: “I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t 100 per cent.

“I’m not saying I didn’t buy it – of course I did. It was just a little bit surprising for me at first.”

He knew about the couple’s secret romance in February last year at the Brit Awards but kept his lips sealed.

Louis continued: “I remember being outside and sharing a cigarette with them and him being excited and trying to play it cool.

“But I’m really happy for him. I think it’s important that Liam has someone around him who’s going to really look after him.

“I don’t know Cheryl too well.

“I’ve always thought she’s lovely, so hopefully she looks after our Liam.”

so last night people were sharing stories of how they became larries and i thought i’d make a big (emphasis on big) ol list of them because i found them really fun to read

I've been a 1D fan since 2013 and my sister and i always thought that l&h looked so good together but only the bromance and we're like "omg larries destroyed their friendship poor eleanor 1!1!1!", then in 2015 the "i'm gay pretty unfortunate isn't eleanor ?" happened and i was like WHAAT???? and i ended up searching more and more about larry (bc it was the only thing that came to my mind) and i found the videos and then i told my sister and then here we are.

I became a larrie because someone in my dash who rarely post about 1D posted the first louis/fred pic and tagged it babygate. So I went looking into the tag and found everything. I had doubt but then i saw the moment where H touch L arm and i was in! I actually became a fan of the music after. I've done everything in reverse with this band! But when i entered the fandom in feb2016 and i was hopping to see it all end like a month later! But hey, still here! And loving it mostly! End it!

it was 2011 and my friend told me she had found a really good song and the singers were so cute, she showed me wmyb video and i spent the whole day listening to it and then in the evening i wanted to find out more about these 5 guys. i started watching video diaries ans i was looking for the next one but i accidentally clicked "best larry moments" video aaand the rest is history

I just remembered going out once and being quite tipsy when DMD video came on so I pointed to Louis and Harry and said 'they're in love, but shh nobody can know' and one of my friends looked at me with a WTF?? expression on her face and said 'but I thought that was common knowledge'. That was around the time bg was still a fresh wound and I'll never forget it bc it was so nice to hear it and also my hangover was a bitch.

I got interested in 1D right after their last concert, like right on Halloween. I became a Larrie that very same day too, right after i read Dan Wattpad's infamous "Harry and Louis hate each other". I saw articles floating around saying how they were enemies, reason for Zayn leaving...blah blah. I was sceptical, then i came across the famous OTRA hug, and i was like, no fucking way they hate each other, not with how they are hugging. I then delved into YT and discovered freddieismyqueen. I became a fan of the boys 4 years ago. Inside the Mind of a Mental Game Coach + GIVEAWAY!

From time to time I love to highlight people within the sport, the BTS side, if you will (I only recently figured out what BTS meant, BTW. behind the scenes!). Running is a sport that requires a lot of mental fortitude. I first met Coach Dean in August of 2015 as I was preparing for the Twin Cities marathon. My interactions with him have changed the way I view both myself and the sport, and he has become a great friend. He was kind enough to do an interview with me, and even better, is giving away his unique, comprehensive mental game assessment (M4PAASS), including the results of the assessment and a complete personal mental toughness game plan. Details for how to win at the end of the interview!

You have a pretty interesting background, care to explain what your history is with the sport?

I started running as a sophomore in high school. A friend of mine on the cross-country team stopped me from catching my bus home just to get me out for the team. It worked. I’ve been running ever since. I ran in college but really improved most post-college and as a masters runner. I raced almost as fast at 40-45 years old as I did 20-25. I’ve raced everything from 400m - well really 440 yards - up to 50 kilometers (both on the track!).

How did you become interested in the mental game of athletes?

I have always loved psychology. It was my minor in college. I found the mind just amazing and complex. I first took graduate sports psych courses for my own benefit. Next thing I knew I was using it on a regular basis helping other runners but integrating it into the coaching I was doing. Back in the 90′s, I decided that this was what I wanted to do full time.

You work with a diverse group of athletes – not just runners – what parts of mental game training are the same across different sports? Different?

This could be a long answer. I’ll try to keep it succinct without losing meaning or watering this down too much.

First I’d say that the mental game is the mental game no matter the performance venue (I say this because I include musicians or dancers in this as well.) Applications and techniques are the same - such as visualization aka imagery, focus-refocus, regrouping and pre-performance routines.

But the implementation is unique to the elements of the sport.

The cues to keep one focused differ by sport. How you might use a “regrouping” technique will be different in a self-paced sport like running compared to something like basketball.

And of course any team sport has elements that individual sports do not.

What is the biggest challenge you face when working with athletes?

I think there are two. The first one is getting athletes to see the value of mental game coaching. Some athletes think you either got it or you don’t. Others don’t think you can learn the skills. The second and related is that they just don’t think it’ll help them perform better.

Now for an athlete I’m working with it’s probably patience. Everyone wants a quick fix. You didn’t get to think the way you do overnight. You won’t get to think a “new” way overnight either. I tell everyone, it’ll take every bit of effort you put into your physical training and maybe more.

One of my favorite parts about talking shop with you is that you know a lot about the science side of sport. However, science and mental game can sometimes be at odds with one another (for instance, I tend to race better than my workouts would indicate). How do you balance these two aspects with the athletes you work with?

I love this question. Because I believe that this gets to one of my strengths as a coach. I have content knowledge of science and sports as well as applied sports psychology - with emphasis on “applied”. I believe that I’m adept working with athletes as individuals. There is no single solution; no single technique; no template to force fit athletes into. And I love the challenge of finding new ways to make things work for THAT individual athlete. I can suspend that other stuff I know to get results. So, regardless of what the “books say”; in the application part of all this - you do what works.

How have your own personal running experiences shaped the way you approach mental game training?

I was never the most talented runner. I was ok. But I sure had a competitive mindset and rarely did anyone get me off my game. I can’t remember a race that I had anxiety about or doubted myself. Oh, I had my bad races for sure but I was always there to “win”. My enjoyment of pushing my limits and the freedom and self-control I felt is something I wish everyone could experience.

What is your favorite part about being a mental game coach?

This will sound so cheesy. I love making a difference in people’s lives. I love the relationships I develop. To see someone move beyond fears that limit them; to experience life fuller; to completely enjoy the moment… It’s all inspiring to me and keeps me going.

Your mental game program is pretty comprehensive. Can you explain what it is and how you developed it?

I have to give a nod to Dr. Patrick Cohn at Peak Performance. I completed his mental game coaching program after my graduate work. This provided the bridge from academic to practical-applied sports psychology. His program provided the initial base for the programs I’ve developed for athletes. I designed and tested a proprietary mental game assessment that I now have all my athletes take. That provides the initial data - our starting point. I designed programs for several sports. But even within those programs I tailor the specific elements to the needs of the athletes who come to me for help.

What is your favorite mental game technique?

For me, like music, it’s about my mood or the situation so this is tough to say. I would say that historically I’ve used imagery the most and the “announcer” in my head technique (It’s a play by play on my run - think Larry Rawson and Frank Shorter announcing the New York Marathon, only I’m the star). I have a pretty vivid imagination and I can make these so real.

As a competitive runner, what was your biggest mental struggle?

Easy: Over-thinking. The phrase that comes to mind: A thinking athlete is an under-performing athlete. An athlete’s job on competition day is execution - not over thinking. Yes, some decisions have to be made but if you are well trained they are almost automatic.

What is the most common mental struggle that you see in runners?

In youth it is often related to anxiety of racing or having an overly external reference, that is, comparing to others.

More mature runners I see the anxiety and wanting to find the secret to pushing through discomfort.

Is it the same for all types of athletes?

The peer or comparison issue is pretty strong regardless of sport.

Do you think the adage is true that running is 90% mental and 10% physical?

Thank you for this. Total garbage but it makes for a pithy quote.

First, in reality - you can’t truly quantify this.

Second, it is completely subjective (what exactly is 90% of running anyway - 9/10ths of a stride?).

Third, it is unique to the individual (you or I have different issues to different degrees).

Fourth, it is unique to the situation (practice vs competition vs championship). And I’d even throw in a fifth point - it depends on mastery of your sport (if you are still mastering skills - it’s more physical). Mental training cannot compensate for poor physical preparation.

What factor do you think most contributes to an athlete’s mental obstacles?

All behaviors are learned - directly or indirectly. So, how we think is the culmination of experiences, role models, and learning with a pinch of genetics thrown in for good measure. My focus is on Controlling the Controllables. You don’t control any of those things from your past nor your genetics. But you do control NOW. So let’s do something about it, eh?

What has been the most rewarding part of your job so far?

I think like any teacher, seeing the light bulb go off or when you get that call or out of the blue and the athlete says something like… “I couldn’t wait until our next session to tell you - I did it. I did what you taught me and nailed my performance. Thank you!”

Blake Shelton flew into Nashville Wednesday to celebrate his latest hit, "God's Country," with the songwriters who wrote it. CAY

Blake Shelton was barely in his seat at the 53rd CMA Awards in November when he turned around and (jokingly) warned Dan + Shay he would rough them up if their “Speechless” topped his “God’s Country” for Single of the Year. Then, he heard his name called from the stage.

“God’s Country,” a multi-week No. 1 hit, won “The Voice” coach his first trophy from the Country Music Association in five years. Shocked by the recognition, Shelton dedicated his win to famed producer Busbee and the singer’s country music hero Earl Thomas Conley — both of whom recently died.

Backstage, he said before he heard “God’s Country” in early 2019, he thought he had lost his momentum. He felt his country music career was slipping.

“‘How am I going to feel when this goes away?’” he remembers asking himself. “I was kind of having that pity party.”

“God’s Country,” which is from Shelton’s Dec. 13 release “Fully Loaded: God’s Country,” became his 26th No. 1 hit and heightened his presence on country radio.

2019 became the year Shelton found God — in more ways than one. It's is also the year Shelton felt his faith soar. He sings about it in “Jesus Got a Tight Grip,” a song he co-wrote with Chase McGill, Jessi Alexander and Rhett Akins, also included on “Fully Loaded: God’s Country.”

Lyrics include: Jesus got a tight grip on my soul and he ain’t letting go, he ain’t letting go/ The devil reaches out but he can’t grab hold because Jesus got a tight grip on my soul/Might have a little rust on my halo/But when I’m gone I know where I’ll go.

The afternoon after the CMA Awards, Shelton lounged on a couch in a dressing room over the bar at his Ole Red entertainment complex on Nashville’s Lower Broadway. He shared the inspiration behind his new dedication to God and how his faith impacts other parts of his life. It sparked, he said, with the start of his unlikely relationship with girlfriend Gwen Stefani. The two connected on the set of NBC’s “The Voice” while they were both mired in messy divorces.

“I believe in God now more than I ever have in my life,” said Shelton, who also admitted he still drinks and cusses more than he should. “The biggest part of that is just how (Gwen) came into my life and now our relationship. It’s just too weird. If you take God out of it, it doesn’t make sense. If you put God into it, everything that’s happened with us makes sense.”

Shelton and Stefani have been a couple since fall 2015. She convinced him to attend church regularly for the first time in his life, and he said he realized it was time to “turn a page.”

Four years later, they split their time between homes in California and his farm in his native Oklahoma. Shelton was driving his skid-steer around his land to clear some brush early this year when his producer Scott Hendricks sent him five or six new songs. Shelton grabbed his headphones to listen, and “God’s Country” was the first song he played. He called it a “revelation.”

“It was the most shocking moment I’ve had in my 20 years of doing this,” Shelton said. “I was in a place that I consider to be God’s country doing the thing that makes me feel the most connected to God, which is working on the land. I heard that song, and I had one of those moments that you hear people talk about … where they say they pulled over on the side of the highway and listened. I literally had that moment.”

Until then, Shelton was unsure of his next career move. “God’s Country” shined a spotlight on his path.

Twenty weeks after its April release, “God’s Country” was one the fastest songs to top the country radio airplay charts that Shelton ever recorded, and it is the highest streaming song of his career. It became the title track to his new album — which is a mix of new songs and recent hits. In November, “God’s Country” was nominated for a Grammy Award.

“The guy was doing just fine, but a game-changing song is something everyone hopes to find,” said John Esposito, chairman and CEO of Warner Music Nashville. “They don’t grow on trees. The fact we got that song, Blake got so excited about it, and there’s a ton of statistics to show how important it was in his career. But what it does for an artist’s psyche is immeasurable.”

Written by HARDY, Jordan Schmidt and Devin Dawson, “God’s Country” changed the way Shelton listened for potential radio singles. Leaning back in the corner of the overstuffed leather couch, the singer said watching fans embrace the Southern rock vibe in “God’s Country” made him realize there’s still an appetite for the sound.

“There is still the old-school segment of country music fans out there that are starved for that,” he said. “But even more than that is this new young generation of country music fans … who know ‘Country Boy Can Survive,’ and they want their generation’s version of that song. The ACC ended up recognizing the refs were in the wrong to let the play stand, and suspended them for four games. But there were a lot of grey areas for the decision on letting it stand, as Sherman explained:

-The refs didn't have this hi-res photo when they were reviewing. They had the significantly grainier version from the broadcast.

-And just because a guy's knee is down and the ball is touching his hand doesn't mean he's down. If Walton isn't considered to have control as his knee touches the ground, he's not down. We've seen replays in which a guy isn't considered down because the ball is slightly jostling out of his hand, leading to a fumble. Just because this is a lateral doesn't make the standard any different.

So that's why refs might not have ruled him down. That said, his knee looks down.

"I saw it. I saw it coming," Corn Elder, the eventual Carolina Panther who took the final lateral for the TD, said. "Once I got it, I saw the open lane and I knew something special was happening."

He got some key blocks from eventual Cleveland Brown David Njoku and Walton, who cleared his path for a touchdown.

The touchdown gave Miami the victory.

“Loss for words, right?” Miami interim coach Larry Scott, who took over for a fired Al Golden the week prior, said after the game, via the Miami Herald. “… Kind of like what can’t kill you can only make you stronger. … I remember I just kept saying to myself, ‘Just keep playing, just keep playing, just keep playing.’

“They just kept playing, just kept believing. That’s the stuff that leaves you at a loss for words because you really can’t explain it.”

“I kinda joked earlier in the week about it kind of being the playground, being kind of like recess,” Scott continued. “And you know what, how bout that? That’s what it kind of turned into right? A kid’s game, out playing hard, and never stop believing. It’s just like the old, what was it called hot potato game or whatever you want to call it, that’s how it kind of worked out right?”

A day later, the ACC explained why the play never should have happened:

-The replay official erred in not overturning the ruling on the field that the Miami player had released the ball prior to his knee being down. If called, this would have ended the game.

-The on-field officials erred by failing to penalize Miami for an illegal block in the back at the Miami 16-yard line. If called, the ball would have been placed at the Miami 8-yard line and the game would have been extended for an untimed down.

-A block in the back foul was called at the Duke 26-yard line. After the officials conferred, which is appropriate, they correctly determined that the block was from the side, which resulted in the flag being picked up. The replay official was not involved in the decision to pick up the flag; however, the referee did not effectively manage communication and properly explain why the flag was picked up.

-In addition, the on-field crew failed to penalize a Miami player for leaving the bench area and entering the field prior to the end of the play. This foul would not have negated the touchdown because it would have been enforced as a dead ball foul.

Cutcliffe further expressed his disappointment:

“What instant replay is in place for is to get it right,” Cutcliffe said on Sunday via the Charlotte Observer. “And we did not get it right. Unfortunately there is no mechanism in place, that I know of, to reverse the outcome of a game.”

Still, the ACC couldn’t go back in time and reverse the ruling, so the final play lived:

Now the Hurricanes return to the same Wallace Wade Stadium.

Mark Richt has since taken over as Miami’s head coach. But The Return will be talked about when discussing Duke-Miami for years to come.

Cutcliffe had this to say in 2017’s game week:

“It’s obviously a memorable moment, and an unpleasant memorable moment, if you were on the Duke side of it. I’ve really kind of put it in a place, you know, that it doesn’t bother me. I don’t look at Miami and that’s the first thing I think about. I don’t look at football officials and it’s the first thing I think about.

“The part that I will always hate is for the players. When you walk into a locker room and you’re supposed to be able to prove an answer, and you can’t. I would’ve been silly to try to say and explain anything. So to those players, I will always be a little apologetic. but outside of that, my mom was right — don’t dwell on yourself and injustices that are done to you.

“I thought it was a miracle,” Richt said via the Miami Herald.

To Stop Floyd Mayweather, Stop Giving Him His Nickname

I remember my family taking a trip when I was very young to Florida. It wasn't a particularly great trip and involved a lot of driving with two other families. But, at one point along the way, we stopped at a pretty crappy hotel. The one benefit to the hotel was that they had free HBO and would be showing the Mike Tyson fight that night. For us kids, it made this long trip a little more exciting. I don't remember which Tyson fight it was but he knocked out his opponent in the first round. That was Tyson at his peak.

“The baddest man on the planet” in the mid to late 1980s fell to Earth by 1990 when he was knocked out by James “Buster” Douglas in Tokyo in one of the biggest upsets in sports history. By 1992, Tyson was convicted of rape. The rest is history that has been played out for most of America to witness from ear biting to a face tattoo. One thing is clear: Mike Tyson has issues. He is not a good person in what our society deems as good. He is not a role model.

In the lead-up to last Saturday's Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight, numerous people brought up Mayweather's past incidents of domestic violence and rightfully so. Mayweather has never specifically responded to the allegations and often dodges the subject just as quickly as he dodges his opponent's jabs. But, if we are to believe Mayweather's words following this match, this was his last fight and he leaves boxing an extremely wealthy man. Mayweather's days are done and he will fall back into the cycle of so many retired boxers that came before him.

In the history of boxing, there is likely not one single good person. Maybe there was a trainer that was a nice guy or maybe a cutman that I'm unaware of. But, for the most part, it's a vicious sport involving terrible people inside and outside the ring. For as remarkable as Muhammad Ali was and who I consider the most important and influential athlete of the 20th Century, Ali still had his issues. No one is perfect but, in boxing, no one is even remotely close to perfection when it comes to morality. This is a sport that had mob ties, heavy gambling, and participants having to take dives let alone boxers coming up themselves in rough and violent environments and family lives that never got addressed because the violence only continued in the ring. As Americans, our culture has grown to become enamored by boxing for whatever reason. The fight and the spectacle of it all are appealing. A man fights another man. It seems like humanity and survival at its foundation. There is perhaps some deeper symbolism to be found in boxing and, with that, people likely expect there to be some moral high ground to come out of the larger than life figures that have emerged from the sport but there isn't. In fact, for all the wealth the most successful like Floyd Mayweather earn on one fight, they are actually morally bankrupt.

Our love for boxing or for really any sport has become ingrained in our society and culture. Team sports tend to be something we bond with as a community or as a city. Our families or our neighbors loved certain teams and so it passed down to us. We find inspiration out of these games because they are supposed to represent admirable life qualities: teamwork, sportsmanship, hard work, and the list goes on.

Over the era that I've been alive, though, sports has been taken over by big business and by unsavory people not looking out for our best interests. Sports are now more entertainment than ever and entertainment can't entirely be looked at as a positive thing. In fact, as we are now seeing far too often, when the curtain is pulled back on the sports or entertainment industry, we're finding a lot of disturbing realities.

There's a simple but difficult resolution to how we can change the existence and success of people like Floyd Mayweather in America. Don't watch them. Don't spend your money on them. Floyd Mayweather doesn't have a $100 million payday if everyone loses interest in Floyd Mayweather.

But it's easier said than done and that's largely again because of our history with sports. I shared similar sentiments about the Cleveland Browns after the first game of the 2015 season. Yet, I'm going to two Browns games this season. I'm not going because I particularly love the Browns anymore because I don't. I'm going because it gives me the opportunity to spend time with my brother and we live on opposite sides of the country. It's what's bonded us together since we were kids and he still loves the sports. That's a hard thing to let go and maybe that's our mistake now. We've allowed sports and family to be interwoven but we're not alone. There are so many families and communities like that.

I personally can't stand the NFL right now. Between the numerous domestic violence issues with players that the organization does not know how to handle properly, their obvious mishandling, hypocrisy, and lack of care of a variety of social issues, and their disregard and covering up of the concussion issue, this isn't a league or a sport I love anymore. As I said to a friend of mine the other night, this might be my last year having any care for the NFL. I have 2 live games with my brother left in me and how much more can they push out of me to just make me feel like I'm a sucker?

It's fine to scream about the issues. It's fine to provide awareness. But nothing will happen unless people stop paying for a product that supports awful behavior. We've allowed ourselves to line many terrible people's pockets including Floyd Mayweather. For Mayweather, it doesn't matter anymore. He's got his money and he'll spend it in the worst ways possible in casinos and strip clubs. He has the right to be the worst example of American excess. We gave that to him just because he was talented in a ring. And Floyd seems set to follow the same successful boxer story arc that has happened throughout history. Hollywood will make a movie about him in 15 years that will star someone like Jaden Smith. It'll probably win a few Oscars. It'll make Floyd seem more human and understanding because of what he overcame in life than how he actually is. His domestic abuse will continue to be pushed aside, and worse, somehow be made to seem acceptable.

No league and no athlete is perfect but few if any are some model for ethical behavior. Many are actually the worst people (especially in boxing) but at least a few are doing their part for their communities and giving their effort via their voice or via their pockets off the field or court. I wish there were more but at least some athletes are doing some good with their giant salaries. The problem with athletes is that we've heightened them to the standard of an era we never lived in. We've been made to believe that they will exemplify all the qualities in sports we were raised on to believe were the reasons why we played sports. We were presented some form of a Hollywood movie of how sports could be inspiring (imagine if Rudy ended instead with Rudy getting CTE and Notre Dame covering it up...not as fun but far more likely in 2017).

When situations like Mayweather's domestic abuse allegations come up, many people with no knowledge or no connections to sports tend to chirp up. Since they find sports annoying or stupid for whatever reason, this is another aspect to pile on to fans for liking “sportsball.” I referenced such individuals when I talked about the complications with the Cleveland Indians logo. But, just like with logos, the ethical and sometimes criminal behavior of athletes and of sports leagues is a major problem and one that we as sports fans are still trying to reconcile with. But we should understand what we need to do to stop this and it's to simply stop supporting it with our wallets. I’m aware of that and yet I’ll admit I’m still just as guilty of contributing to it with these 2 NFL games this year.

We can't particularly stop Floyd Mayweather now but we can prevent the future Mayweathers of all sports. To truly address Mayweather's history of domestic violence, American society and culture has to go right at what boxing and sports love the most. It's the same thing that led Tyson to take fights where he was out of shape at the end of his career. It's the same reason Ali damaged his mind and body more in his sad end in “The Last Hurrah” against Larry Holmes. It's the nickname that Mayweather himself has and that he created for his team's brand: “Money.”
