2. When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you've sent me a character I don't like)

It's not 100% clear to me, but it was definitely around the September timeframe of the novel (the first time I read it, in ‘22). I don't think it was OFFICIALLY too late for me until he met the Harkers at the end of September and Mina was like "Hey Jack. JACK. You keep your diary on all these wax cylinders, and they're not even LABELED?!" And Jack was like "...Um. Yeah, actually... that never even occurred to me." gOD, you IDIOT <3 (I may be paraphrasing). But it was this and several of his earlier blunders paired with his dogged determination to remain genre-blind and skeptical of everything that he was witnessing that ultimately endeared him to me. There Is Most Definitely Something Wrong With Him (derogatory) (affectionate).

He’s truly a problematic fave, but he’s my favorite character in the novel nonetheless!

4. How many people I ship them with

Um, the entire vampire-hunting polycule? THIS MAN DESERVES ALL THE KISSES where canonically he has none, and he deserved to be one of Lucy’s three husbands, fr fr :(

14. Best storyline they had

The incredibly tragic story, told in his own words, of how John “Jack” Seward, MD had to watch the woman he loved waste away and die of a mysterious ailment, interspersed with personal asides regarding how full of vigorous manhood all of his friends are, and how his former professor is so incredibly hot good at everything and spry for his age, but who also may be (in Jack's professional opinion) a touch crazy. Peak sopping wet noodle time, it’s amazing <3

21. When do you think they were at their happiest?

September 30: "I got home at five o'clock, and found that Godalming and Morris had not only arrived, but had already studied the transcript of the various diaries and letters which Harker and his wonderful wife had made and arranged. Harker had not yet returned from his visit to the carriers' men, of whom Dr. Hennessey had written to me. Mrs. Harker gave us a cup of tea, and I can honestly say that, for the first time since I have lived in it, this old house seemed like home."

2. When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you've sent me a character I don't like)

I mean, I’ve always liked him quite a bit (that voice, that tragic backstory, that Shakespearean flavor). But for whatever reason I didn't become obsessed until my rewatch last summer. CanNOT stop thinking about this man, the former king who has really just been a pawn his entire life; what he thinks, what he feels, how he's been going through the motions while searching for the one who betrayed him, yearning for a death that will not come for as long as he has. HE’S JUST SO SAD, YOU GUYS!!!!!

7. A quote of them that you remember

Every word that comes out of John Rhys-Davies’ mouth is SO GOOD, but the quote that sticks out the most is (of course) "KNOW her? I NAMED her." GODDDDDDD it's infinity good and I never get tired of hearing it, not even once (and since they use it in every relevant "Previously On," you hear it A LOT). It's ok though, because they 5000% knew what they were doing with that one.

Some other choice one-liners:

"I'm just… so... tired" is also top-tier delivery, and does a really great job of summarizing his entire existence since 1057.

"And I know how to read them" is such a sassy retort (and a GREAT callback to “Lighthouse in the Sea of Time”).

“For that matter… WHY ARE WE WORKING TOGETHER?” is sooooo *chef’s kiss.* Enjoy being a walking, talking meat puppet with your worstie for several more months, my guy!

20. A weird headcanon

Ummmmm soooooo I designed a gargoyle form for Mac as my headcanon for what he would've looked like in "The Mirror" (of course I did). My Watsonian explanation for why we didn't get to see him that night is he was way too busy getting drunk off his ass and crying over his long-dead wife (yet again) :C

22. When do you think they were at their lowest?

990-some-odd years is a looooong time to find your lowest point. Even though moments like Gruoch’s marriage to Gillecomgain, his first “death”, the ending of “City of Stone,” and the middle of “Sanctuary” were pretty low moments for him, I’m quite sure his lowest point was never actually seen on the show (centuries-long depression isn’t exactly Disney Afternoon-friendly). The day(s) he found out about Luach and Gruoch’s deaths were obviously waaaaay up there. I imagine he had a really rough time of it during the Black Plague, so I’ll say his lowest point was somewhere in there :C :C :C

I do hope he was able to enjoy the Renaissance a little, tho. I’ll bet he commissioned a lot of art.

Rewatch: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Angel"

Summary: Buffy and Angel grow closer, but Buffy isn’t sure whether or not Angel is an ally when his true nature is revealed.

WARNING: This post contains spoilers, and discussions of a couple with an age gap.

This is it! The episode where we learn more about Angel, and the episode where I spend most of my time swooning over Angel. We are officially in the second half of the season. Let’s jump in.

Recap: The episode starts with the Master deciding he is fed up with Buffy killing all of his servants, so he sends the “Three” after her to put an end to things. They attack Buffy on her way home from the Bronze, but Angel interrupts, getting injured in the process. They retreat to Buffy’s home, where Angel stays the night. The next day, Giles informs Buffy about the “Three”, stating that the Master must see her as a threat if he is sending them. Buffy returns home, where she and Angel share an intimate moment before it is revealed that Angel is a vampire. While discussing it the next day, Giles does some research where he finds tellings of a vampire named “Angelus” who was a vicious killer, but has since exiled himself from other vampires. That night, Buffy and Willow are studying in the library and Darla shows up at Buffy’s house. Darla attacks Joyce, leaving her unconscious in Angel’s arms as Buffy arrives. Joyce is rushed to the hospital and Buffy decides to go after Angel. They face off at the Bronze, while Angel reveals that he was cursed with a soul by Romani people about a hundred years before. Darla shows up, and she and Buffy fight before Angel stakes Darla, killing her. The Master mourns her loss while Angel and Buffy reconcile and kiss again at the Bronze the next night. 

Overall Thoughts: I loved this episode. As someone who grew up watching Buffy, this is one of the most memorable episodes in the series, because of what it establishes. 

First, I really enjoyed the Master in this one. He made me think about what makes a good villain for this show. He’s unique, evil but strangely charismatic, and while we already know his motive, he has clearer motive than some of the future Big Bads. Technically this is a characterization note, but the way Mark Metcalf portrays the Master in this episode (maybe in previous episodes but I’m just noticing it) is reminiscent of the Grinch played by Jim Carrey, and it makes me wonder if Carrey took any inspiration from this role when he was the Grinch. 

There are some discrepancies that I have to mention. Primarily, in the scene where Angel and Buffy seek shelter in her house, Angel mentions that vampires can’t come in uninvited. This is something that rings true throughout the series, but the moment is a little undercut when you consider moments before that, one of the vampire’s hands finds it’s way into Buffy’s house. This could be because they haven’t figured out how they want that to look visually, or it could be a simple mistake. Another thing, in the scene where Darla comes to visit Angel, she opens his curtains to let in light. Angel, and Darla, set in the sun for a significant amount of time, and while Angel does flinch away, neither of them are harmed. 

The age gap, paired with what I know about Buffy and Angel’s relationship, makes this episode hard for me. It’s strange to watch them and want them to be together, especially when I know Angel is two hundred and some change years older than Buffy. It’s also weird when Angel tries to set boundaries with Buffy, yet he has spent an expanse of time watching her, without her knowledge, from afar. That part also makes the scene where Buffy thinks he read her diary even more uncomfortable. 

Overall, it’s a great episode, despite its flaws. It gives us an insight into Angel, who is one of the most compelling characters in the show so far. I can’t wait to see more. 

Fashion Corner/Costuming: I don’t have many comments so I’ll make this brief. Angel’s clothing in this episode is great, it’s very attractive. I know eventually his wardrobe gets darker and he starts wearing sweaters and stuff but he looks very good right now, so I’m not complaining. 

I’m also tired of Darla dressing like a school girl. It was fine when she was trying to come off younger to seduce Jesse, but now it’s old and creepy.

Characterization: With every episode that I watch Willow pine after Xander, it makes it harder to watch. I don’t think they would be a good couple, but it makes me so sad to watch Willow absolutely adore Xander and him be oblivious to it. 

Angel in this episode was so compelling and charming, I wanted to know more about him. I almost wish they don’t make him broody later on, I like how he is now. He’s the type of guy I’d go get coffee with and let him walk me home in this episode, where later he’s attractive and charming but more in a very mature, almost paternal way. 

Facts: This is not the last time we see Darla, as she will become a key character in season three of Angel. 

This is the first episode we see Buffy use a crossbow.

Can I request an imagine where the reader is childhood friends with elena and is apart of the scooby doo gang and she gets kidnapped by klaus for leverage but shes super sweet and friendly and her sweetness is almost off putting to klaus and they end up falling in love? Then they have to go tell the gang and she ends up having to choose

Yes you can. Can I say I rewatched Vampire Diaries and The Originals, I feel like the Mikaelsons deserve better.

Y/N had grown up with both Elena and Caroline, she was their closest childhood friend and the Scooby doo gang's researcher as Y/N knew everything there was about Mystic Falls. But lately she couldn't help feel like neglected by her friends as they were focused on Klaus Mikaelson the newest baddie after Elena. Y/N was too sweet, too nice to tell her friends how she felt so she kept to herself.

"Glad to see you are awake, love." Y/N blinked getting her bearings and saw Klaus smirking looking her over. Y/N was trying to remember what happened as she heard her cat, Sir Lancelot, let out a loud meow. Believing he couldn't get back into the house she got out of bed slipping on a robe and went to help her beloved Lancelot.

"Oh you had a hybrid kidnapp me." Y/N said softly not freaking out as much as Klaus thought she would.

"Hmmm can you make sure someone feeds Sir Lancelot? If you are going to keep me for awhile?"

"You don't seem so upset about this as I thought you would." Klaus said unitieing Y/N watching her fix her robe giving him a peek of the short nightie she wore.

"I'm leverage for Elena right? So why freak out as I told them in that you would kidnapp me."

"And why would you believe that?"

"Because you are a smart guy. I'm the one that has knowledge of this town. Hey did you paint these?" Y/N asked getting distracted by Klaus's paintings as the hybrid was taken back by how her eyes lit up.

"I did." Klaus answered honestly watching her study them his heart seemly fluttering when she smiled at him.

"They're beautiful. I wish I could paint this good."

"I could teach you."

"I'll love that." Y/N said still smiling as Klaus found hisself spending the day with her instead of using her. Klaus began to fall for the human girl as she adored hanging around the hybrid.

"Klaus hadn't came around me in awhile." Caroline tells the others as she walked into the Salvatore home. The gang was surprised as they began to notice that Klaus had basically back off unaware that the hybrid had been spending time with Y/N.

Y/N opened her door finding a box and she picked it up opening it seeing it was a gorgeous strapless champagne colored dress with gold flecks on the flowy skirt. Y/N picked up an envelope seeing it was an Invitation to the Mikaelson ball to be Klaus's date this made her blush. Her and Klaus agreed to let the gang know about their relationship as she loved the hybrid while he loved her 10x more.

Klaus looked to the door seeing Y/N stepped inside looking like Goddess in the dress that Rebekah helped pick out. The dress hugged Y/N's curves perfectly and she was wearing the necklace he bought her that was a wolf pendant.

"What is Y/N doing here?" Elena asked Stefan and Damon watching Klaus walk up to Y/N kissing her hand. Klaus felt his heart flutter as Y/N smile at him lacing their fingers together as she leaned in kissing his cheek.

"You look stunning, love." Klaus tells Y/N making her blush and heart flutter as she wrapped her arms around his.

"And you look devilishly handsome." Y/N tells Klaus as for the rest of the night Y/N was by Klaus's side which Elena realized that they were together. So the group confronted the two and Klaus hid Y/N behind him growling.

"Yes Nik and I are dating."

"Y/N, you can't date him! He is the enemy." Damon said glaring as Y/N frowned hold Klaus's hand.

"Nik has been nothing but sweet to me. And to be fair you guys are trying to kill him and his siblings."

"You have to choose Y/N. Us or the murderer." Elena told her making Y/N stop as her heart squeezed hurting. Klaus couldn't believe what he heard as he knew just how much your friends meant to you which was why he began to leave them alone.

"Elena....you can't do this."

"Him or us. You can't have both." Elena said crossing her arms staring at her childhood friend. Y/N began to tear up as she couldn't choose between her childhood friend and the man she loved more than anything.

"Elena.....please."

"Choose or I will." Elena said knowing Y/N would choose the group over Klaus and the hybrid knew it too so she surprised everyone with her answer.

"I choose Nik then." Y/N said staring down her friends as Klaus flet his heart stop as Y/N got into an argument with Elena that ened in tears. Y/N looked to Klaus cupping his face placing his forehead against hers.

"You choose me.....why?"

"Because I love you Nik. This has been the most real thing I have ever had so I would be a fool to throw it away."

"I love you too, beloved." Klaus says softly kissing her gently as she kissed back. Klaus knew he was going to marry this woman but first he needed to be sure their love stayed real.

Finally, after a long day of fixing my thesis and an intense supervisory meeting, I can officially catch up with the summer studying challenge! It’ll be nice getting back to posting regularly for it from tomorrow

I try to, but not as much as I used. Hoping to get back in the swing of that when my thesis is practically done next summer.

8th August - What book are you currently reading?

I’m reading two at the moment: Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver, and I just started  All the Murmuring Bones by A. G. Slatter today. Hopefully it’s good!

9th August - What is your favourite summer ‘beach read’ book?

I don’t think I have a particular one. Usually summer is when I relax with my reading and go for 99p romance or fantasy novels on my kindle for some easy, non-analytic reading

10th August - What TV show are you currently watching?

I’m currently rewatching Downton Abbey with my mother (our favourite) and The Vampire Diaries as background noise while I study

11th August - What was the last movie you watched?

I watched Hairspray yesterday at my friend’s place - I’m a sucker for a good musical 🎶

12th August - What is your favourite summertime snack?

What was your favorite TV show growing up? Do you still watch it?

I feel like I should preface this by saying the following: I didn’t have cable TV in my house until I was 14 or 15 years old. So that may alter what I can comment on this, at least in terms of what I watched routinely.

Mostly though, what I had access to as a kid was PBS and Disney’s One Saturday Morning (and a few WB cartoons, like Animaniacs). What I remember watching most often though? Wishbone, Reading Rainbow, Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, The Simpsons, Star Trek: The Next Generation, ER, and Masterpiece Theatre (Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy? chef’s kiss). Wishbone was entirely due to the literary focus and I liked to challenge myself to beat the kid contestant kids on the geography questions on Carmen Sandiego. The other three were either out of coincidence, that they happened to always be on, or the fact that my parents were really into Star Trek and ER. 

Cable was a treat though, mostly when I went to relatives’ or friends’ houses, or on vacation. It was then I could see the Holy Grail (at the time): Nickelodeon. Sure, you had your Cartoon Network Cartoon Cartoons, with your Dexter’s Lab and Powerpuff Girls (this may have been a little later than my childhood, actually) and Johnny Bravo...but Nickelodeon?

Nick was gold. It was the coolest channel on TV for elementary school-aged me.

Doug, Rugrats, Rocko’s Modern Life, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, All That, Legends of the Hidden Temple, GUTS...yeah. I loved all of those when I was able to watch them. AYAotD, Doug, and Legends were my favorites, though. And I managed to visit Universal while the Nickelodeon Studios were still open and the slime geyser was still going. It was beautiful.

Anyone else remember the time capsule?

As a teen, I finally went back and rewatched stuff I missed, like Daria, but I was mostly watching anime at that point. By the time I got to college though, I finally got into The O.C., Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gossip Girl, Supernatural, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, etc. in my late teens/early 20s. I’m not sure how Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, and Vampire Diaries passed me by, but they did. 

As for a selection of my lineup of must-watch TV:

- So. Many. Historical. Dramas: Downton Abbey, The Great, Bridgerton, Sanditon, Victoria, Poldark, Endeavour, Grantchester, Outlander, A Discovery of Witches, Mad Men, The Gilded Age, Miss Scarlet and the Duke...etc.

- Actually just a lot of British TV in general. Just...just throw Britcoms, mysteries, and dramas at me. And while not strictly a British-made show, can E!’s The Royals come back? That final season cliffhanger was BS. Despite the creator being full of shit, The IT Crowd was great. Also: The Inbetweeners, Skins. 

- Netflix selections like: Stranger Things, Lupin, Big Mouth, Elite, Squid Game, most things by Mike Flanagan that don’t have dead cats in them (I’m looking at you, Hill House. Screw you, Hill House). I still need to watch Money Heist.

- Anime like: Lupin III Part 6, Spy x Family (alongside a whole list of favorites)

- Disney+ like: Ms. Marvel, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and soon....SHE-HULK. I’ve been waiting for MCU She-Hulk since the first Avengers movie, pretty much. She’s my favorite superhero. I am VERY EXCITE.

- Others: American Horror Story, Riverdale (though I stopped watching this season), Pretty Little Liars, Dollface, Shrill, Sex and the City (some episodes are better than others), Peacemaker, and I’m rewatching The Sopranos. Still need to start the TV version of The Time-Traveler’s Wife (the book is a favorite of mine. The movie was terrible) and finish up Succession and Euphoria.

How many languages do you speak?

Fluently? One. English, of course. But I’ve got a decent grasp on French, at least enough to get around: I studied the language between ages 8 and 22, though if I don’t use it frequently it’s harder to keep up with it. I also studied some Latin and Japanese.

Fiancé is fluent in English and Italian, and knows some Spanish and German. This makes our planned trips to Europe much easier!

Do you prefer writing with a black pen or a blue pen? Black, always. 

Would you prefer to live in the country or in the city? Probably the happy medium of the suburbs? If I really had to choose, I’d go with the county, especially if I knew I’d still only have a short drive into the city. It would take a lot of adjusting for me to move so far out into the country that the city is like, more than 15 minutes away, but I do love fresh air and nature more than anything else and the quiet beauty of the country always appeals to me.

If you could learn a new skill, what would it be? I would really like to become a better cook. 

Do you drink your tea/coffee with sugar? I will drink coffee any way you give it to me, though I do usually prefer cream and sugar in it (especially if it’s iced) and I drink tea as is. Unless I’m sick, then I’ll throw some honey in there. Also Earl grey tea always needs milk.

What was your favorite book as a child? The Runaway Bunny when I was really little. I also really, really loved I Spy books and still have all of mine.

Do you prefer baths or showers? Literally just sitting in a tub full of dirty water doing absolutely nothing is not for me. Showers all the way.

If you could be a mythical creature, which one would you be? I’d love to be something brilliant and beautiful like a vampire or some woodland nymph but I think I was meant to be a harpy

Paper or electronic books? Paper! 

What is your favorite item of clothing? My black, red and orange striped sweater; my baby blue loose-knit sweater; my Radiohead North American 2018 tour shirt; my Chicago hoodie; my Def Leppard t-shirt; my GVF t-shirt; honestly all the t-shirts 

Do you like your name? Would you like to change it? My name is great. I’m the only Zara.

Who is a mentor to you? Nick Cave

Would you like to be famous? If so, what for? Not really, though gaining some sort of recognition for my writing has always been a goal of sorts. I feel like most writers never really get “famous” anyway, you’re really only famous within a particular realm of literature. But like, the thought of actually putting together and publishing a collection of poetry and having people buy it would be astounding. 

Are you a restless sleeper? Always. It’s a lot worse these days. I’ve managed to sleep through one night over the past like, three months. Trying to fall asleep is struggle, staying asleep is an even bigger struggle. This is why I don’t like going to bed nor do I like sleep in general lol it’s hard to enjoy something that’s entirely unenjoyable! 

Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person? I feel I am far more of a “romantic” person in the sense of the artistic and intellectual movement more so than the contemporary, common definition. But I’ll get back to you if I ever get a real opportunity to try.

Who do you want to be closer to? Myself, but in a healthier way.

Do you miss someone at the moment? Not really

Tell us about an early childhood memory. I remember getting one of those spinning, flailing sprinklers that was just like a big flower one summer when I was in preschool. What is the strangest thing you have eaten? I don’t know if I’ve ever eaten anything all that strange? Fried alligator, which is amazing. I tried this canned pork by-product once, similar to Spam but not, that was okay. Eel. I’d like to try more “strange” things.

What are you most thankful for? All my basic needs being met; my friends; my health; my abilities; nature.

Do you like spicy food? I fucking love spicy food and crave it constantly. I have a bottle of Frank’s Red Hot on my desk right now. Need that heat and need that spice!

Do you keep a diary or journal? No. I really do advocate for a lot of people to give it a shot but journaling never did anything for me.

Do you like your cereal crunchy or soggy? A solid in-between. I love getting that crunchy top later but then a couple spoonfuls down, you get it a little soggier but still relatively crisp. I love cereal in all forms.

What would you want your legacy to be? My trailblazing fan fiction LOL really, any of my writing, as long as I’m proud of it. And being known for always being passionately true to myself and my values.

Do you like reading? What was the last book you read? I do like reading. I used to love reading but higher education put a damper on it for me. I’ve been trying to read more and have successfully read a number of books over the past few months--most recently, I reread Weetzie Bat, which is one of my favorites. 

How do you show someone you love them? Quality time. You wanna hang out? I’m down, I don’t care what we do. Buying food sometimes, too.

Nope. I am still working as usual (I work SPAR and Australia isn’t in lockdown). However I am doing uni from home.

kinda I’ll put it this way I’m an indoors extrovert so I like being with people but don’t mind being at home, so my lifestyle hasn’t changed much as I work with my best friend.

lol imagine making plans more than 5 mins before it happens... but yea can’t say I was looking forward to it but disappointed the we won’t be hosting ANZAC services this year.

I’m rewatching The Vampire Diaries with a friend, which is A Ride, and all the Studio Ghibli movies have recently been put up on Netflix, so I am watching those.

And I’m reading The Secret Commonwealth by Phillip Pullman.

I still have to work though, so I don’t have that much more time than usual.

If you can go outside, what do you like to do during this time?

I mostly just go for a walk. I live close to a river, so that is always fun to go to. Now the weather is getting better I might go skating.

Any fascinating concept you’re studying?

Not at the moment no.

A song/s that resonate with your state of mind at the moment?

Probably Uncharted by Kensington. The world is dealing with a crisis which it never has before, and I wonder if anything will change afterwards.

Eating chocolate. I love it far too much. And buying games and/or books which I then never play or read.

SO... about that Titans Trailer...

Okay, so I wasn’t. Planning on giving this a review but then I watched it and you gave me an excuse. So. Here we are.

I hate teen drama shows but I live with my younger sister this summer so I’m constantly hearing them in the background and I know that I’ve not heard this weird song before but I also know that they allllllllllllll sound like this so there’s already. That creeping sense of 

Oh fuck it’s Riverdale isn’t it

Like. Costume design for superhero shit isn’t easy, you’ve got classic superhero looks that are purposefully garish and meant to stand out while celebrated costumes in visual mass media are toned down and realistic, fitting the style of setting. You can honor both traditions at the same time, what it requires is picking a color temperature for your set’s lights that are less noir mood piece and more lit like a musical. I actually think Moulin Rouge! is a movie where the cinematography deserves more credit for getting that mood balance because it’s definitely what I think of when I’m thinking of ideal lighting and color palettes for superhero live action. 

Marvel’s gotten a little better at figuring this out in the post-Iron Man 3 movies but they went a little too flat and bright in the first Avengers and too drab and dull in movies like the first Thor and the first Captain America.

The whole reason I’m thinking of this is because DC has never once figured this out save for Wonder Woman which had its coloring saved by choosing a sepia-esque lighting that wasn’t Sn*der-saturated so that Wondy’s costume and Themyscira in general popped while the warfront was still diferentiated but earth tones. I would actually point to DCEU movies being the pennacle of trying too hard for realism to the point of being visually embarrassed by their motifs. Which is also why the CGI rendering is always horrible in their movies. Suicide Squad was a little better but almost bipolar in how it snapped abck and forth between color saturation.

Anyway, this is a TV show and you would think that because TV shows are lower budget and more closed sets generally that this would actually be an advantage for the iconically colorful Titans teams because they’re likely to have warmer and flatter lighting choices. Except teen dramas lately haven’t been about that. They’re much darker and “more serious” and they mostly demonstrate that by darkening the lights and having everything go to dark blues with light temperature. That might work well in some places but it’s not good if you have multiple characters you want to show off with different color schemes that are wildly different from each other let alone from the blues. You can do it, but usually that involves introducing additional light sources to combat the darker lights, which is why in our Riverdale case study you have neons show up a lot, especially at Pop’s restaurant. Those neons introduce a “natural” secondary color and lighting source that helps make different hues exist more naturally in the environment without being garish and misplaced. 

I can tell that at no time is this show going to put an iota of thought into any of this sort of detail because in this BLUE ASS SHOT of this trailer they have Raven’s purple hair look like it’s been photoshopped in by me -- they managed to make an already cool color like purple look unnatural in a scene that has cool temperature lighting. This is going to be shot like complete shit isn’t it.

I was wrong -- all that shit I started with? Obviously I was overthinking. This is a glorious comedy.

Okay all that aside we get rapid montage which is supposed to wow us with cameos for DC diehards and impress us with the quality of composition of shots and the special effects quality for people like my sister who don’t care about Comic Con because I’m playing trailers loudly on my laptop while she’s rewatching Pretty Little Life of the Secret American Teenage Drama Queen. 

It does none of these things. It’s no longer a comedy, it’s depressing because all that shit I said about the colors and mood lighting and temperature increases rapidly when you have terrible CGI transformations Beast Boy and... fire spouting... Starfire. Hm. Someone took that name a little literally didn’t they.

Is that Dove. From Hawk and Dove? Killing people?

Um. I mean none of these characters save for Starfire and Raven are really all that down with killing under any circumstances in comics but Dove in particular... like why have Dove as part of the team if you’re not going to bother with the Avatar of Peace part and the eternal conflict ongoing of wanting to use tremendous powers while promoting nonviolence. I know this is something I tend to care more about than most people with superheroes, but that’s literally the only reason to have Dove in anything ever. A great example would be the single Justice League Unlimited episode involving Hawk and Dove which tackles that exactly. 

Who makes these live action decisions for DC. Is it Joffrey Johns? I bet it’s him. It has to be on some level. 

Oh my god this music is so bad. I listened to nothing but emo music for a solid 18 months of my life and my favorite band to this day is Nightwish and I find this unbearable.

Evil inside of me I kinda like it. I mean. I guess. That is... a conflict for Raven to have sure.... But it’s also way more boring and tedious than it was in the 80s? Like. There’s five million supernatural teenage dramas that have already done that exact conflict But With Vampires or But With Werewolves. I should know! My sister watches them in the background! I know all about Diaries of the Teen Dog Vampire.

Oh and that scream. Okay, so also in film there’s this thing called a sound board and there’s a lot of cheap, royalty free sound mixes and noises that if you pay attention to editing and sound design there’s some sounds that have been really overplayed in media lately because people are too cheap to have their foley artist record a sound for themselves. 

That scream that Raven just did that you know you’ve heard before is one of those and there’s nothing wrong with it I guess it just. makes everything about this feel cheap. The writing’s cheap. The characterization’s cheap. The lightning’s cheap. The character design is cheap. This god awful song is cheap.

Made it back from visiting my mom. My brother did me the solid of dropping a bomb on me about an hour before my husband and I were due to head home (which he definitely knew about because we had been talking in the family chat about leaving at 2). I’m so stressed and so fucking tired. And I think all of the stress and exhaustion is the reason I was diving head first into my The Vampire Diaries rewatch and my current reads. I just don’t want to exist in the real world right now. A lot of things are up in the air and there’s not much I can do about it.

But we’ve been home for about two hours. We managed to unpack and start the laundry. I just finished my current book and the husband is studying for a work exam thing he has tomorrow morning.

The Vampire Diaries: 4x4 Rewatch

Stefan: What? You're not gonna tell me? Damon: Can't tell you. Private. We're in a fight. Stefan: You're in a fight. I'm not in a fight, I'm over it, I've been over it. Damon: Not still mad at me about Elena? Stefan: You let her feed on you. I'm always gonna be mad at you, but we're not in a fight.

In the previous episode, Meredith told Damon to fix things with Stefan and Elena. Taking her advice, he went to fix things with Elena, and had yet to fix things with Stefan. Now that he knows Stefan is angry, but not fighting, he’s happy to move forward.  Damon: Very well, then. They didn't find any remains at the explosion site. Stefan: So Connor's still out there. Damon: Apparently so. I'm gonna need you to get on this today. I have to take Elena to college. Stefan: I'm sorry, you have to do what, exactly? Damon: I'm teaching her how to feed. She needs to learn snatch, eat, erase now more than ever. Ah, ah, we're not in a fight, remember?

Stefan: What about Caroline? She's a genius at self-control. Elena: She's too good. She doesn't understand how hard it is and you... well, I know what being around too much blood does to you, so... I can't put you through that. Stefan: So I guess that leaves Damon, huh?

The reason Elena reached out to Damon to begin with. If she can’t feed on animal blood and she can’t drink from blood bags, the only person who can take her to feed is Damon. He’s the only one who drinks straight from the vein without feeling guilty about it. 

Damon: Everybody is someone's uncle or father or camp counselor or bible study teacher. Elena, you don't know these people, why do you care? Elena: I care because I'm still me. I still have the same feelings, Damon. Sorry if that spoils your master plan to turn me into a super vampire.

Such is the issue with Elena. Even though she’s not killing these people, she cares not to feed on them. It’s important to note her comment because the same can be said about her feelings for Damon. “I’m still me” and “I still have the same feelings” means she’s still in love with Damon. 

Stefan is jealous because she already fed on Damon, and knew well enough to wait for his persmission to feed on Matt. This is what makes the monster party so exciting. It’s not just her need to feed. It’s her feelings for Damon that come rushing to the surface. Stefan already made the mistake of letting Damon stay in town, now he’s making the mistake of letting Elena go with him to college.

Damon: Now remember the idea is not to kill him. Elena. Step away from the ledge. Elena!

The whole point of Damon being there. He’s trying to teach Elena moderation just as he tried to teach Stefan. She’s a vampire. One taste is all it takes. This is Elena having fun - as a vampire.

Elena: Who am I? Why am I acting like this? Bonnie: Because you listened to Damon and Damon makes everything he wants sound like a good idea. Elena: I should be here with Stefan. I shouldn't be here with him. I should be going through all this with Stefan.

Elena was having fun until Bonnie came in with her judgy eyes. Now she has reason to fear Bonnie telling Caroline and Caroline telling Stefan. After all, that’s how Caroline found out about their kiss on the porch. “Why, cause you two made out? Bonnie spilled the beans.” This gives her reason to cover up her feelings for Damon by claiming she should be there with Stefan.  

Bonnie: You were supposed to help her, and you let her get completely out of control. Damon: She's not out of control. She was having fun. Bonnie: This isn't fun. She's acting like a different person. Damon: She is a different person. She's a vampire. We're a predatory species. We enjoy the hunt, the feed, and the kill. When the guilt gets too bad, we switch off our humanity and we revel in it. Bonnie: Is that what you want? Her to be like you? Damon: She already is like me. And you know what makes me able to drink my fill and leave someone breathing and not rip their head off like my brother? It's that I can revel in it. I can make it fun.

Damon isn’t saying Elena is a completely different person. He’s saying she’s a different species, and this is her basic nature as a vampire. That’s the issue with Elena. Who she was as a human is now magnified, and her basic nature as a vampire goes against that. Yes, she was having fun. Bonnie doesn’t like seeing Elena act like a vampire even though that’s exactly what she is. Bonnie has no room to talk. She's unable to use her magic because she lost control while using dark magic. It’s the same concept, temptation. Once is never enough. 

Damon: Well then, goodnight. Elena: Damon, I'm sorry. Things got a little heated at the party and I shouldn't have let that happen. It's just that I – I feel like. Damon: What do you feel, Elena? Elena: When you tell me what a vampire should be, deep down I believe you. I think that you're right and I - I hate that feeling. Because I don't want to be... Damon: You don't want to be like me.

The body language in this scene is hilarious because neither Damon or Elena knew Stefan was there, so he likely heard their entire conversation. Elena gets fidgety, which Damon is quick to notice. This episode basically ends with both brothers keeping a secret. Stefan is hiding the fact that he got more than news on the hunter. He got a story about the cure for vampirism, and he’s hiding the deal he just made with Klaus. Damon already slipped once when he told Stefan he let Elena feed on him, he wasn’t about to tell him what happened between him and Elena at the party. He left it up to her. So Damon is essentially keeping her feelings for him a secret from Stefan. This scene at the door is how Elena knew Stefan was the one that compelled Jeremy. 

Stefan: If she turns off her humanity, then I don't think we'll ever get her back. So, I'd do anything to save her.

Stefan severely underestimates Elena.
