i know “ps2 graphics” has become a meme for “bad” looking graphics but genuinely i love how gamecube & ps2 era games look. i really wish we’d quit striving for photo realism & keep the stylistic graphics of old that don’t bloat file sizes to 150 gb per game.

Oh, awesomeness! I kinda forget that Skyrim is a heckin old game because it's only been significantly on my radar for maybe 3 or so years (I wasn't always a video game person lol) and I only bought my first copy of the game and started playing in 2020, so I'm a baby Dovahkiin lol XD

That sounds awesome, though! I've played as a Khajit and then I've done a couple of Bretons - I'm a PC player so I mod my game quite a bit (mostly quality of life improvements and added places/quests/aesthetic/immersion/graphics stuff that's not, like, way off in left field lol) and I have a mod that allows me to start wherever, not just in Helgen. So I have a couple dragonborns (and I think I beat the game without any mods at all first), and then I now have a vampire who's not technically a dragonborn. I played through the entire Dawnguard DLC with her, without going through any main quest stuff except getting the Dragon Elder Scroll. So that was fun lol. I definitely do wanna try playing an elf sometime, or just generally all of the other races at some point or another, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the Khajit and Breton because they're my first two characters :)

Hearthfire is a DLC! I think it's Hearthfire, Dragonborn (?) and Dawnguard are the three. I think I started Hearthfire and Dragonborn, and I know I finished Dawnguard. I definitely do like Hearthfire though. I think that's the one where you build your own house? It's cool, I really like that :)

And ah, yes. I completely understand the lack of interest in politics, lol! I'm watching Game of Thrones right now, and that's kind of piquing my interest in fantasy political structures... if I feel so inclined ever, maybe I'll go back and try Skyrim's civil war storyline because I've heard good things about it. But I'm definitely gonna have to go find a walkthrough for that because I have no idea how to start or where to go for it XD

(also I really don't love killing real people in game, I always feel so terrible about it, so the politics would make me sad I think 😅)

I don’t really know what to say to your rant but I’m glad you’re playing Skyrim!!! It’s my favorite video game (I don’t consider the Arcana a video game) and it’s really fun!! Starting assassins creed rn actually. Yeah I like hearthfire for my family and building houses!! I think adopting children is part of the hearthfire thing because it was in hearthfire trophies! So yeah it’s definitely my favorite because it allows you to help children and take care of them! Well, adopt them! (Only two though) and when you have children they bring animals! FOX!

That's what my parents mostly argued about, and I know financial strain can really affect a couple. I never want that burden. Who in your life causes you the most stress or negative feelings? My damn self. Have you ever had a teacher that also taught your parents? No; my parents didn't grow up here. Wait! I THINK Mom had one of my college professors? I don't recall for sure, and I definitely don't remember who it was. Are you the type of person who seeks out revenge? Nah. Are there any songs that inspire you? Certainly, such as "Life Won't Wait" by Ozzy Osbourne, "Get Up" by Shinedown, and more. How do you feel about celebrities getting involved in politics? This one was super fun and emotional. I was not expecting this to be the episode that the Rescue Rangers would make their debut in but I’m glad they were here. Dewey and Launchpad’s friendship is so pure and adorable. I almost wish there hadn’t been a b-plot but it was fun. I know other people are upset over Steelbeak/the Rescue Rangers being different but I like them. This show is different from those shows. Steelbeak was repurposed into being Launchpad’s nemesis so he needed to match him. Plus we already have a bunch of smarties in FOWL. And this Steelbeak seems younger and less experienced so it would make sense that he’s not as clever. The Rangers didn’t really change that much from their show, just got a new origin that helps them fit into the world that has already been set up. I think this episode is going in the top 5.

HALO FOR BEGINNERS PART 1: A NOT SO BRIEF INTRO TO HALO

So Microsoft has recently announced that The Master Chief Collection for Halo, is coming to Steam, opening up the Halo universe to many new players who haven’t been able to play before thanks to not owning an Xbox.

So in celebration of this, I’ve decided to put together a little series thats basically a Beginner’s Guide to Halo, for people who only know it for its stereotypes involving its multiplayer play.

This series is mostly aimed at popular video game fandoms on Tumblr, so you might catch me making some comparisons (especially to series like Mass Effect that actually have some tropes in common with Halo)

However a couple of things before I get started for real

1.This guide will only be talking about the original trilogy of games, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3. There are three other games in this game bundle, Halo 3: ODST, Halo Reach and Halo 4. However I haven’t actually finished ODST, and I haven’t played the latter two in over half a decade, so I really don’t feel equipped to talk about them in length.

2. Halo deals with a lot of heavy content. Along with the obvious blood and gore, there’s a lot of body horror involving the Flood (though if you can stomach say… Telltale’s TWD, its probably about at that level of squick). Heavy themes that are core themes of Halo include genocide, religious based trauma and abuse, child soldiers and medical experimentation on humans. I don’t believe Halo CE has much in the way of individual triggers to look out for, but Halo 2 has an extended torture scene that includes stripping someone naked to humiliate them and Halo 3 has several sequences involving a female character being violated mentally. So if anything these things are extreme triggers you can’t engage with, then I say you should listen to your gut.

3.I will not talk about the multiplayer aspects of Halo much (except to discuss stuff involving co-op maybe) as this series is meant to kind of explain more outside of multiplayer stereotypes.

4. Halo 2 and 3 are pretty hard to talk about without mentioning spoilers for the games that come before it. If you’d like a totally spoiler free experience, I’d recommend skipping anything where I mention these games. Also for the sake of my own sanity, I am not treating the Flood as a spoiler, because ...well it hasn’t been for almost 20 years, and Halo has since reached a point where you can’t really talk about it without mentioning them.

So I guess I should start at the very beginning?

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE HALO MASTER CHIEF COLLECTION?

The Halo Master Chief Collection is a collection of the first four Halo games, and ODST, and soon Reach will be added too! Its sold at the equivalent price of one retail game, so you’re basically getting six games for the price of one.

It was released for Xbox One in 2014, to coincide with Halo 2’s tenth anniversary. It was infamously buggy at the time, (probably because it was rushed for the aforementioned anniversary) but most of these bugs have been fixed, and they even added in ODST as an apology gift! The PC version should not contain these bugs. (though there’s a decent chance it might contain bugs related to PC porting, especially for Halo 3 and beyond which have never been ported before, but that’s just speculation).

If the PC version is identical to the Xbox version, the Master Chief Collection is essentially a download pass for these games. You download and pick and choose which ones you want! For example on my Xbox I don’t have the ODST from MCC loaded on because I already have the vanilla Xbox 360 version loaded to emulate (which I still haven’t finished but YOU KNOW). This allows you to play the games you want and not waste space and download time on the ones you don’t.

Halo Combat Evolved is ported based on the 2011 10th anniversary version that updated the graphics. Halo 2 received a brand new (and absolutely STUNNING) graphics update specifically for this release. Halo 3 and beyond are straight up ports with the original graphics, though with a much better frame rate.

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS HALO?

OH…. umm I guess maybe I should talk about that too.

Halo is as most people know, a sci-fi first person shooter. From 2001-2010 the games were released by Bungie. When Bungie left Microsoft to make the Destiny series, Microsoft kept some employees behind and hired some new ones to create 343 Industries which is their in house team to make Halo. The first game released by 343 Industries is Halo CE: Anniversary in 2011, and the first game released based on original content is Halo 4 in 2012.  This post series though will mostly focus on Bungie content.

So Halo: Combat Evolved came out in 2001 and its...basically the reason the Xbox is a THING. If it weren’t for Halo, or even if Halo had been a multiplatform release, the Xbox probably would have gone the way of the Sega Dreamcast. Halo: CE had many innovations for the first person shooter genre at the time, including a two gun limit where you have to strategize your choice in weapons, a very complex AI system for the time, and basically revolutionized multiplayer for FPS games as we know it.

Halo would have been the best selling game for the original Xbox if it weren’t for Halo 2’s release in 2004, and Halo 3 basically was THE title for the Xbox 360, when it came out in 2007. The later games haven’t been AS successful, but still have a very loyal fanbase.

           ENOUGH WITH THIS HISTORY LESSON, WHY IS HALO ANY DIFFERENT FROM CALL OF DUTY?

First things first.. I know there’s a lot of posts going around rn, talking about how well….overly militaristic many FPS games are. I will say I DON’T believe Halo is on the same level of some of these games. I’ve never heard of it having any military involvement in production, and I’d say its about as militaristic as Mass Effect is, as in the protagonists are in the space military, and the plot revolves around that..  The backstory of Halo if anything, paints the military in a very gray morality light AT BEST. So if you’re worried about this being a game that over-glorifies military stuff, if you’re okay with Mass Effect’s portrayal of a human space military, you’ll probably be fine with Halo.

SO I have not actually played Call of Duty or games like that as surprisingly I actually really don’t like the FPS genre, and Halo is the only FPS game I like. I will say though, Halo is definitely not a totally generic shooter, the way Call of Duty is stereotyped as. It has a very interesting plot with a lot of layers, and very unique lore, that still plays on familiar tropes. (and I’ll get into some of that later.)

At least one selling point I’ll say, is that unlike many modern shooters, Halo is STUNNING. It uses color very well, and has many beautiful maps, and especially in the remastered games you could just look at the environment for days. So the fact it has a color palette outside of gray and brown is definitely enough to set it apart.

I will say if you like Mass Effect for its alien lore and world building, there’s a very good chance you’ll like Halo too. The fandoms have a lot of overlap, and actually have a decent amount in common despite the fact one’s a shooter where you kill aliens and the other is an RPG where you…. you know with the aliens.

SO WHAT IS THIS PLOT YOU SPEAK OF?

I plan to go more in depth into this in my next post, but I figured for this intro post I might as well tell the basic gist of it. There will be some loose spoilers for the sake of the summaries making sense.

Halo Combat Evolved, is about a lone human ship that has escaped the destruction of the planet Reach, which was the last thing between Earth and the Covenant, a race of aliens hell bent on wiping out humanity for religious reasons. The ship makes a “random” jump to what they think would be the middle of nowhere, but in fact brings them to a ringworld that is worshipped as the foundation of the Covenant religion. Both human and Covenant land on this ring and a fierce battle assumes as they try to take control of it. Halfway through you learn that there’s...surprise! Zombies! Called the Flood, a spore like species that turns people into zombies and their only drive is to consume everything in their path. It turns out Halo, is a weapon to destroy them but…. It also destroys every living thing in the galaxy, so it turns into a mad dash to make sure that a) no one activates it and b) the Flood are able to be stopped without it before they leave the ringworld.

Halo 2 takes place about a month later, and is a split campaign between the Master Chief and the Arbiter, who is the disgraced commander of that fleet you were fighting in the first game. The Master Chief side of the story involves the Covenant finally making it to Earth, and the discovery of a second Halo ring, and the fallout of both of those things. The Arbiter side of the story involves him trying to restore his honor within the Covenant, by becoming a suicide soldier fighting for their faith, but as he does missions for his prophets, he learns the amount of lies and hatred his religion and society are built on.

And Halo 3 is basically...the convergence of all these stories. Its very hard to talk about without mentioning spoilers, and without going in depth about world building related stuff, which is the focus of my next post.

The final thing for this intro is….

WHAT IS HALO’S GAMEPLAY LIKE?

Okay so… I’m not going to talk about the controls, because I imagine they’ll be very different from mine, as an Xbox player. And I’m very biased because Halo is the first game I ever played on a controller as a kid, so I don’t really have an objective way of describing them. But the fact the controls were easy for me as a seven year old, probably makes them pretty easy to learn in general.

Because Halo is a linear story, the game is split up into levels. In the vanilla releases of the game, you need to play them in order to unlock them all, but in MCC that is NOT the case, and you can skip levels. I really do not recommend doing this though the first time around for obvious reasons, but once you’ve completed the game, you can just play the segments you like! And trust me there are certain levels you’ll hate (like the Library… I will tell you right now you will hate that level.)

There’s four difficulty levels, Easy, Normal, Heroic and Legendary. Easy is well..super easy. This is the mode I used as a little kid. However I don’t think there’s any shame in playing at this level, in fact I usually use this difficulty for my first playthrough so I can get through the story with no difficulty. Normal is well...normal. This is the difficulty I usually play at, its probably the most realistic in terms of enemy strength vs player strength. Heroic is basically pretty hard but not like...obscenely hard, but enough to be a big frustrating unless you know the game really well. And Legendary is… well super extra hard. Play Legendary if you enjoy having everything murder you, with no mercy. Also Halo 2 has a significantly harder campaign then Halo CE and Halo 3.

In the vanilla releases of the games, starting with Halo 2, there are items called Skulls you can collect that add difficulty or some extra fun to the game, but you have to collect them in the Legendary difficulties of the levels. This is NOT the case for MCC, and they’re all available for you from the getgo. I really don’t recommend using them for your first playthrough unless you really want a challenge, with the exception of the silly ones like Grunt Birthday Party (which spits confetti for headshots to Grunts) that don’t actually affect gameplay.

A lot of other gameplay stuff is really hard to generalize since Halo is a series where the gameplay tends to be pretty different between games, such as with HUD features and such.  But those are some general miscellaneous game things they all have in common.

So yeah, thats it for my intro to my...intro to Halo. I’ll get started on the next one talking more indepth about the factions and what not, when I recover from...writing this.

life update

i’ve been making a lot of random textposts lately but they’re all kinda vague and complainy so i thought i’d write about stuff i’ve done recently

i dyed my hair tips red finally...and it looks really good like better than green actually. i feel like the dye i used will fade fast but i think it will fade to a coral colour which i don’t hate ^^ ill bleach my bangs soon enough but i need to do the math and figure out the ratio of bleach powder to developer

lately i’ve been using twitter through a separate account from my main and i don’t interact with anybody but i like to read threads and whatever its pretty interesting but...there’s so much drama and even though i’m not even involved im already tired of it. i’m pretty much done with tumblr except for this blog but not using twitter anymore either would be really nice...and i never use ig either. one day the only social media apps ill use are texting apps and im looking forward to that. but also how am i gonna get my daily dose of jhope fr my life is kinda lame rn and he makes me happy

i turned my old old 2012 laptop back on so i could play skyrim and its so slow and combat is really hard bc it lags so much which is really unfortunate...but i don’t want to download skyrim onto my new laptop so ill just have to figure out a way to make it faster. i did disk cleanup and defragmenter and hopefully that helps. i think if i allocate more ram to graphics it might be better (or something like that i dont rly remember but ik ur supposed to do it in bios). anyway the laptop is old as fuck and i only used it for games which i barely even play nowadays...although i want to spend my time playing video games instead of social media. i should try to get back into minecraft bc i literally spent like $40 on it... and ttr (i didnt spend money on it but i made a friend like 2 months ago and havent talked to her since....@ her im sorry...)... and i said i wanted to replay portal 2 right

also im trying to write a story. ive had the whole story plotted out for like 3 months but ive only started writing it now and i think i have ~800 words? still on chapter 1 or whatever. writing is really hard bc even starting i felt like “oh this is so cringy wow i’m really writing? a FANTASY story??” but tbh so many ppl write fantasy and its fun seeing people with cool powers doing crazy shit. anyways theres hoes out there writing about the most disgusting shit imaginable so i’m trying to convince myself im not cringe and having a hobby like this is a good thing

im not as terrible at it as i thought maybe bc ive been reading a bit lately but idk how to get the patience for it. i just wish i could mentally transfer my ideas onto the page without having to type..like in that saiki k ep where he uses his powers to transfer the manga writer’s idea onto paper without waiting for him to draw it.

i havent really talked to my friends for a while... i guess in actuality its been like a week and a half which is not as bad as it could be but i miss hanging out with my friends in person

i watched the first ep of s2 of bon voyage where they go to hawaii and it made me miss sri lanka so much. like when they landed and walked off the plane i felt so much nostalgia for the air there and just the whole vibe. sri lanka is obvs not the best place in the world but something abt it just hits different. like its just refreshing. i still like toronto tho

id like to go to hawaii one day. and new zealand too. they both seem like really cool places

oh and i made 2 tiktoks that was just like me restoring old white shoes lol. i’m not done there’s still more to do but making tiktoks is so hard and annoying to edit. it makes me not want to continue restoring my shoes since ik im gonna have to film it...

The Plan

well, i guess i have to start somewhere...

hello, i'm jane. old, fat queer graphic designer/web developer living in Canada with my husband and our two floofy felines.

i used to play sims 2 a zillion years ago, and had a tumblr a zillion years ago (as evidenced by the 6+ year old posts below), back before it even ocurred to me to combine those two things. i really loved S2, but i played most during a really awful period in my life and have sort of classified it in my mind as a depressive red flag ever since. so because of that, i've actively avoided getting back into playing at all for the past number of years.

wtf else is there to even do rn? also, i've watched every single one of Juno Birch's sims videos and i challenge anyone to not immediately download the game after that.

anyway, i've been lurking around here for the past couple of weeks while i downloaded 10+ gb of cc & mods, planned out multiple generations of storylines, created some sim bbs and houses, and generally just WENT HAM. as you do. (hello, i am extremely an aquarius).

so my plan is something like a legacy story on steroids? it also doesn't follow any particular rules except my own, because have i mentioned i'm an aquarius? there are sort of 3 main families that anchor the whole thing and then a whack of peripheral characters and storylines... i feel like trying to describe it is sort of futile and also i'll probably change my mind about half of this, but again, had to start this whole thing somewhere.

honestly, this is all just for me. if you, dear reader, happen across this at some point and find it interesting, that is very cool. but mostly i'm just excited to have a creative outlet that isn't tied to my income where i can stretch my wings a bit and be the big dumb romantic i am at heart. probably my posts will not be very good and i am ok with that.

so that's that. the plan, as it is. gonna go play around with some portrait edits and try to get character bios up for my gen 1 bbs.

And I gotta take her to Geek Squad ‘cause her keyboard acting up next...grrr...) 

3.) Posters! I’m a huge, huge black gal nerd and proud of it! I have 3 Spider Man posters (well, one is really a calendar from my 13th birthday party, but shush), a Sailor Moon poster, a Lego Batman movie poster, a Transformers: Bumblebee poster, a Monster High poster, a Marvel characters poster, 2 Falcon (Sam Wilson, baes) posters, and finally one Tuskegee Airmen poster!!

5 Things I’ve Always Wanted to Do

1.) Travel, travel, travel! Especially wanna go to Paris, France (I’m a huge ass romantic sap). And recently, I wanna go to Disneyland and spend a whole mortgage payment and then some just to finally hug Princess Tiana. 

2.) Write at least, ehh...30 to 50 fanfictions. Wanna make a whole library for you all. 

3.) Take a ballroom dance/waltz class. I wish to whirl ‘round and ‘round the ballroom. 

4.) Play Super Mario Kart Brothers, or whatever the hell it’s called. I’ve never owned a game console (I be broke & so I’ve only ever had books and Sims on my PC), so that’ll be a novel experience for me! 

5.) More traveling.

1.) Thinking hopefully about the future. Honestly, it’s the main thing that keeps me going. I think about what a mostly great career I’ll have as a nurse (I’ve always wanted to go into healthcare, but never even dreamed that I’d be an RN). I think about my lil chute-chute of a car that’ll be all mine. I think about my time that’ll be all mine. 

2.) Watching cartoons, especially old ones from my childhood. Ya’ll, prolly about 98% of what I watch is literally cartoons. I’m learning not to beat myself up about that/call myself immature. Like...if that’s the worst thing I do to cope with life right now, then ain’t nobody getting hurt. 

3.) My wittle entitled white boy of a cat, Dante. Sweet baby boy has gotten me through many a hard day and night.

5 Things You May Not Know About Me

1.) I have a vivid, surrealistic imagination. One of the most common complements I get on my fics is along the lines of “This was so vivid that I could picture everything so clearly! I could smell that scent, I could see them dancing!” or “You painted such bright, beautiful pictures in my head-I could see and understand everything so easily! It was like I was right there in the scene!” 

Yeah, it was just like that for me, too-I saw it like that in my head, too. I just have the ability and desire to translate that onto the page in black-and-white. So thanks a ton!

The...slight problem that this causes, tho? I can’t turn the strength of my imagination off...and so I can’t watch horror movies. I am 25-years-old and I can’t watch horror movies and I don’t think that’s going to change any time soon. It’s all just as real, just as vivid, just as valid to me and I take on the emotional tones of the movie just as easily as if I were watching Brandy’s Cinderella or Rugrats in Paris: the Movie.

I become terrified & affronted when I’m tryna listen to music on YouTube and a fucking ad comes on first for a horror movie and I smash that “Skip Ad” button as quickly as I can-lately, it’s been It and I just...ugh. Ya’ll, not everyone can handle horror movies. 

It’s not kind. It’s not good. 

2.) Umm...I wanna cuddle Bucky Barnes. Like, if I could cuddle Bucky Barnes one day, my life would be complete and I’d need no more fulfillment. Just...lemme cuddle Bucky Barnes and all will be right in my world. 

3.) I am an avid tea drinker! I especially love to drink tea when I’m working hard-be it at writing or homework! I drink plain English breakfast tea, lemon-ginger tea, Constant Comment tea, Jasmine green tea, plain green tea, English black tea, french vanilla tea, and just about every other kinda tea you can imagine! Yep, yep! 

4.) I grew up and still live in the south, but I got my parents’ northern blood. So I love, love, love, love, love and prefer the cold. You can betcha ass that I’ll get up a 5am in the morning just to go for a walk in the freezing, pre-dawn morning. It’s like a soft, soothing winter wonderland and I love it!

A book/story/fanfiction you read recently and would recommend (doesn’t have to be fiction): For Ardyn lovers such as myself I’d recommand Second Life Syndrome  it’s been some time since the last update and i think i’ll bust anut when there will be one. For french speakers and FFVII fans i’d recommand Dragonae, yes it’s Vincent/OC, yes it’s a really common starting point, but it’s also really well written and there is actual thinking behind the plot which is always appreciated. Also, dragons!!
