So I made a creation myth for my English class but it’s just dawned on me that this is my first… “original” work, and I’m actually kinda proud of it. So I thought it belonged here. If enough people like it, maybe I’ll expand upon it. Enjoy!

Shadows and stars*

Before everything, before stars, before light, there was nothing, endless nothing. That nothing was alive. That nothing was a “thing” in itself. Today, we may call that nothing Death. One moment, before time was a concept, Death saw a spot, a little white dot in its void. He was confused. He didn’t know where it came from, or even when it came from. Until now, where and when didn’t exist. But this dot was... something, not like Death, a real something; it was here, it was now, and suddenly, it was everywhere that Death, or "nothing," was not.

There was chaos, everything everywhere, with no rhyme or reason. Death was frightened, panicked, and overwhelmed. He tried to make it all go back, back to that bright little dot. He crushed and condensed it all as far as it could go, until it began to take shape. Death could no longer condense it or even control it. He receded into the surrounding darkness to both hide from as well as watch this new entity.

The entity warped and expanded; initially, it was too bright to discern any notable features. As the light died down, he could see four protrusions from the middle as well as a ball of light on top with several longer strands of light flaring off the main source. Death watched this entity with both caution and a newfound interest.

The being seemed to wander and search, confused. It broke off a tiny piece of light from its head, another dot, but when the entity placed the dot down, it grew frustrated, saddened, and even pained. Death saw this and finally decided to reveal himself.

“Why do you cry?” he said. The entity responded, “This world is supposed to be grand, colorful, and bright, like me. But all I see is darkness and emptiness, like you.” Death was slightly offended, but understanding. “What is this... thing?” he gestured toward the dot. “A star; it’s supposed to be big and bright.” Death took the dot and analyzed it. After a few seconds of staring, the dot burst into brightness and flames, illuminating the space around it. The entity was overjoyed. “What did you do?” it asked excitedly. “I gave it everything you didn't—mass, gravity, heat, all the things you can’t see.”

They stood in silence around the ball of light before Death broke the silence. “What are you?” The entity was caught off guard by the question but thought about it and answered, “I don’t know, what are you?” “Nothing.” Death answered bluntly. “Then I guess that makes me... everything.” Death chuckled. “What?” “I am not nothing, and you are not everything. We may embody those things, but in the end, I am me and you are you, and I am Death; that is my name.” Death turned to the being, “What is your name?” The entity couldn’t speak, it had no answer.

“... God, God will be your name.”
