hey raven cycle enjoyers here’s my quick attempt at drawing pynch

Another thing I love about The Raven Cycle is that it’s an entire four book series about fate and prophecy and escaping the narrative, but if you pay close attention you can see that the entire time, miniature prophecies are coming to fruition throughout the entire series. Niall Lynch tells his middle son that the day he was born, it rained blood, and Aurora told him ravens laughed. On the day Gwenllian is raised from her tomb, both occur. At the beginning of the second book, Gansey mentions that Glendower had magicians with him that could change the weather and tell the future. By the end, Gansey has both (Ronan, with his miniature suns and Adam, his psychic). Gansey approaches Ronan in the church in the first book, and is sure that his voice wakes Ronan from death. And then in the third, his voice has exactly that power.

there is NOTHING as heartbreakingly lovely as the line: “tell me to go to school closer to you and I will.”

This scene has always stuck with me, purely because of how that line is such an out-of-character thing for Adam to say, but he says it anyway. These words are coming out of the mouth of ADAM PARRISH. This is the same person who had to pretty much kill himself over getting good grades, getting out of Henrietta, and making something of himself. Adam refused to give up on that dream for literally everyone, and we can kind of watch his friendship with Gansey deteriorate because of his pride/how insistent he is that he gets into Harvard.

And he does. But in this scene, Adam witnesses Ronan crying after trashing his dorm room. barely even hesitates before telling Ronan he would leave Harvard just to be CLOSER TO HIM??? like Maggie is actually the sickest person out there for doing that. The fact that he was offering to literally THROW AWAY a life’s dedication of hard work and sacrifice just so Ronan would be COMFORTABLE??? oh I’m going to be SICK. (Of course Ronan declines the offer, and Adam is somewhat relieved he does, it’s still so heartbreaking to see him even propose that idea in the first place)

Even the weird shit like sacrificing himself to a magic forest, scamming people for fake psychic readings even though he is in fact psychic and falling in love with an ancient, sentient horror who is stuck inside the body of an irish-american catholic teenager with a shaved head

Hey so I’m rereading the raven cycle and the parallels in the ways Adam and Ronan look out for each other?? Fucking INSANE. Like the ACUTE similarities between how Ronan responds to Adam’s grief over Persephone (sitting down next to him on the porch; ‘I don’t want to talk’ ‘the fuck would I talk about?’) and how Adam responds to Ronan’s grief over Aurora’s death (getting into the car with him; ‘are you coming in?’ ‘no’ ‘wake me if you need to’)?? The way they comfort each other just through their presence and comfortable silence?? I am UNWELL about these books.

(I’m sure there’s more examples but this is what we’re getting today)

okay I know people have been screaming about this for a decade but I’m rereading the dream thieves and I just got to the part about the rent and the tuition and oh good god Adam was so upset and resigned and he is so certain it was Gansey taking his choices away from him and he didn’t know it was Ronan and Ronan was quiet and let them fight and fight and fight and did he ever tell Adam. In the future, did he ever say “i love you and I hated that school but I loved you so I made sure you would have everything you ever wanted even if you would never want me.” WILL ADAM EVER KNOW.

i think we’re all wrong. the problem isn’t that the raven cycle doesn’t have a comprehensible plot, it’s that it causes short term amnesia. while i am actively reading the books i understand the plot. i could probably maybe sorta describe what has happened. but as soon as i close that fucker. it’s all gone. i don’t remember anything except vibes. i can recall random dialogue and situations but not what happened.

something about the raven cycle kids and the quest to be seen and understood and the physical manifestations they have of their inner selves. gansey and his eccentric camaro that’s always breaking down. ronan and his raven that’s almost literally his heart. blue and her old beech tree that’s with her through everything. and adam who doesn’t know his true self; adam who is the trailer, the hondayota, the st agnes apartment, the magician card. adam who has to remake himself.
