2020 was supposed to be your year. It was the year where your very first Netflix series was going to be released and the one you were supposed to move into a cozy apartment in Los Angeles with your boyfriend Rudy that you had met through the show. It was supposed to be a year to remember, but the global pandemic had turned everything upside down. Fortunately, you had made some wonderful friends on the set of Outer Banks so when the quarantine happened, you all decided to stay in your little apartments in the building where you all lived during the shooting of the show in Charleston. It was the best way to stay sane during this difficult time. So here you are, two weeks into quarantine, looking for a good movie on Netflix to watch with your lovely boyfriend. 

“What about Fight Club?” he proposes, remembering that you once said in an interview that you had the biggest crush on Brad Pitt.

“Nah, I’ve seen it to many times.”

“Okay, hmm, what about The good dinosaur?” 

“You want me to cry like a baby? If so, yes we can watch it, but bring me a lot of tissues,” he sighs and you chuckles when you see that he switch to the next movie on your list. 

“You have Fifty shades freed on your list?” he says looking at you with wide eyes and raised brows. “And you already watched it?!” 

“Yeah, I watched it with Maddie and Bailey,” you shrug. “Wanna watch it?” 

“Hell yeah!” he wiggles his eyebrows and you laugh, lying your head back on his comfortable chest. 

Rudy is lying on your bed, his back leaning against the headboard so you can settle in between his legs, your back pressed against his torso that rise and fall at a steady pace. Every time you listen to a movie together, he places you like this so he can hug you in his arms because God knows that man is a big fan of cuddles! Harper’s 2020 Fic Wrap-Up

my very good friend and incredibly talented felow writer @sagemoderocklee came up with the idea of doing an end of the year fic wrapup in an attempt to polish the turd known as 2020, and since i actually managed to get some writing done this year i figured, why not jump on the bandwagon? 

a lot of super duper fucking shitty things happened in 2020, but i will always be proud that in this incredibly chaotic, stressful, and challenging year i managed to produce almost 180k of content (and that’s not even counting the writing i started in 2020 but haven’t published yet). so, to celebrate what’s been a pretty big achievement for me, i wanted to go through the various projects i’ve spent the last twelve months working on and give a preview of my plans for 2021.

projects i worked on/completed in 2020:

first off, let’s start with the beast to end all beasts, my personal baby, and honestly probably the reason most people follow me -- star trek au:

something bigger than the sky (shiita; 44,163 words; completed): 

i’ve said this before, but the whole idea for star trek au was literally just a joke between me and my-then girlfriend, now-fiancee, and eternal shiita enabler alexa aka @durintrash (by the way, if you follow me for my fics and you DON’T follow alexa for her corresponding art WHAT, exactly, are you doing with your life????) where i sat in a space-themed diner and said ‘haha imagine itachi as a vulcan.’ but then i blinked and suddenly somehow i’d written the prologue and the first chapter of SBTTS in the span of a week. it’s like i was possessed by a fanfic demon.

it sounds super cheesy but i honestly can’t say enough how important this fic has been to me and how much it’s pushed me to be a more productive and more dedicated writer. previously i spent a lot of time Thinking about writing and occasionally i’d put a few words on the page and then i’d go... do... something... else. but star trek au was the first idea i loved enough that it actually pushed me to write and keep writing and not give up even when i was confronted with things like writer’s block and worry over the quality of my writing. so thank you, star trek au, for being the light in a very dark year for me. 

by the end of SBTTS, i felt like i accomplished everything i wanted to do with the story’s beginning installment: i introduced all the characters and set the groundwork for their development; i showed what life on the corvus was like and how starfleet, the federation, and the universe functioned; and, more than anything, i was able to sketch out both the main protagonists -- itachi and shisui -- with all their strengths and flaws, show their relationship to one another, and hint at how that relationship would progress. 

all the stars are closer (shiita; 75,195 words; completed)

considering how slow i used to be at writing, i thought it would be, like, twelve years before i managed to get to the second part in the series. BUT then covid happened and i half-lost, half-quit my job, and like a lot of people this year i ended up with a lot of free time on my hands. and so, like a fucking demon, i finished this part in two and a half months. 

when i originally planned this part out, i really thought it would be a lot shorter and a lot lighter atmosphere-wise than it turned out. instead, this second section of the story ended up being pretty meaty in terms of length and in subject.

that said, overall, i’m really happy with how ATSAC turned out. i loved the way the characters progressed, how the relationships deepened, and how we were able to see this universe grow bigger and more complicated. and i’m very satisifed with how it set the stage for part three, which takes us to...

lovers alone wear sunlight (shiita; 41,518 words; in progress)

there’s... a lot about this part that i just can’t talk about yet, a) because it isn’t finished and b) because it contains some of the biggest plot points in the entire series thus far. if you’ve been keeping up with the stardates thus far (which i encourage you to do!) you know what part three is leading up to: itachi leaving the corvus and the dissolution of shisui and itachi’s growing relationship. 

with that in mind, i’m... more than a little terrified about writing part three, which is why the third chapter has been languishing in my google drive for months now. (and also why i started not one, but TWO new fics to cope with my writer’s block. whoops.) chapter three is where all the parts come together and shit hits the fan, and i can only hope that everyone will be as excited to read it as i am to publish it. 

next up, the two other projects i began this year:

salvation comes only in our dreams (shiita; canon divergence; 16,835 words; in progress)

for a long time, i’ve wanted to write something that’s actually set in the naruto universe and works to correct a lot of the flaws that i see in the series. there are a lot of things that bother me about naruto, but i think one of the things that frustrates me the most is the really messy and in some ways offensive resolution to the uchiha coup plot thread, and i wanted to write a story that dealt with the complicated themes of the series--imperialism, oppression, genocide, child soldiers--but, like, didn’t suck and completely drop the ball. thus, the massacre au was born. 

my main goal was to tell a story that showed a lot of these characters in ways we’ve never seen them before, specifically itachi. i didn’t want to write itachi as just an idealist who suffers and Suffers AND SUFFERS for konoha yet still remains loyal to the village for some unfathomable reason like he is in the series. i wanted to write an itachi that was sharper, more jaded, and more suspicious of the world around him, but overall was still a good person with a kind heart. and for shisui, well... obviously there’s a lot going on there, too. 

this is easily the darkest story i’ve ever written, and as the plot thickens it will certainly get darker with relationship dynamics that are complicated and unhealthy At Best. i hope that as the story goes on it’s a ride people continue to enjoy, as i was super pleasantly surprised at how popular this fic became (compared to my usual stats, at least) 

oceans between us (shiita; alternate universe; 15,039 words; in progress)

it’s good to know that i continue to be the most ridiculously niche version of myself as yes, i wrote a fucking shiita atonement au. 

with each fic i write i try to have a very specific voice that suits the particular piece and distinguishes it from other stories that include the same characters. for example, star trek au chapters tend to be more fun and light-hearted (especially shisui POV chapters) and lean more into the action movie and sci-fi adventure feel of the star trek universe, while the massacre au is written in a way that’s much heavier and guided by itachi’s emotions and experiences. my main goal with this story was to give it the same romantic, operatic, almost hazy quality that the movie has, which reflects the period setting and also the nature of this grand tragic love story. 

i knew from the beginning that there were going to be a lot of things that i cut from the film in my retelling, like the lola subplot and obviously the setting of pre-wwii england. i also knew i wanted to explore some of the aspects of the film that were implied more than outright stated, like the themes of classism and upper-class privileges. and more than anything i wanted to structure this piece around this idea of tension building and building until it finally snaps and there’s just a world of mess and hurt and loss that affects these two characters in two very different ways. 

also, the sex scene. i haven’t written a sex scene for anything in, like, a decade, so that was a lot of pressure. but i’m happy with how it came out and i think it ended up being an aspect of the story that felt like both a natural progression and necessary to show the affection these two people have for one another.

originally i was just going to end the story with shisui going to jail, but when i told alexa this i genuinely thought she was going to kill me. so, that didn’t happen lmao. but the more i tried to imagine what a second chapter would look like, the more i realized she was right, and it would have been a terrible idea to end the fic there. as for whether or not the final chapter will keep That Ending... who can say?

goals i have for 2021:

finishing lovers alone wear sunlight and, if i’m very lucky, beginning the fourth and second to last part of star trek au (yes, as it currently stands this 160k+ word series is only halfway finished. sorry not sorry)

publishing the next chapter of salvation comes only in our dreams (i don’t know when it will drop. i don’t know anything about this fic. please do not @ me) 

completing oceans between us (the second and final chapter is currently sitting at about 4k words and will probably end up at about 15k in total)

completing and publishing a new fic i’ve started at the very end of 2020, which is the shiita jurassic world au nobody but me and alexa knew they wanted. it’s essentially a 90s romcom with dinosaurs and i cannot Wait to share it. (it’s at about 9k right now and will probably end up being around 20k to 23k in total... maybe...)

FINALLY starting my dream project: the shiita olympics au i’ve been planning for years, where itachi is a figure skater and shisui is a hockey player (i’d like to keep this under 150k but at this point trying to keep my stories at a managable word count is a losing battle)

Out of all of the shows, movies, and books you love, who is your OTP (one true pairing)? Probably Spyro and Cynder from The Legend of Spyro trilogy. I love them. But I honestly don't have like, intense OTP feelings for any fictional characters? No real reasons, I just don't. I had both a nightmare and a normal dream; in the nightmare, I was sucked up into a tornado and carried away, and it felt so, so real. I was terrified. The dream is more vague in my memory, but I know I was at Jason's house (which wasn't actually his house) and his mom was still alive. I was hanging out with her and just chatting. It made me wake up in a really somber mood. Have you ever been admitted to the hospital? Psych hospitals, yes. Have you ever built a snowman? Yeah. What is your favorite milkshake flavor? Chocolate. Do you have any scars? I have a lot, but most are from negligible instances that just won't go away for some reason. If you could breed two animals together to defy the laws of nature, what new animal would you create? Putting all impossibilities aside as well as any potential health repercussions, maybe a meerkat and an opossum? Just in general a meerkat with a marsupial tail would be SO cute. Plus imagine the pattern. What is the most unusual conversation you’ve ever had? Oh I don't know. Can you do any accents other than your own? I can pull off a really convincing British one. Do you sing in the shower? Or do anything unusual in the shower? Explain. No. I just get clean, get out. I've always hated showering (the process anyway, I obviously enjoy feeling clean), so I get my business done adequately and then I'm done. Do you believe in aliens? Eh, maybe. It does seem pretty questionable to believe NOTHING else can exist in an infinite space. I doubt they're little green men, though. What do you think about babies? WAY too much work and WAY too much responsibility. Keeping another life safe, healthy, happy... the idea alone is terrifying. No thanks.

Our baby

This takes place in s16x02 when Amelia tells Link she’s pregnant.

“Link I’m pregnant,” Amelia said very nervously to reaction of this pregnancy.

“Um Amelia the isn’t mines and can’t be mines,” Link said calmly taking her hands in his.

“What? Yes it is you’re the only person I’ve been sleeping with since Owen,” Amelia said taking her hands from his.

“Amelia I’m infertile from chemo therapy I can’t have babies and I know this for sure,” Link said.

Amelia pulled him into a tight hug because she felt bad for telling him she was pregnant with his baby and he can’t have kids.

“I’m so sorry Link I didn’t know,” Amelia said softly.

“ It’s perfectly fine but I hope you’ll still let me be in your life and hopefully your baby’s too,” Link said happy-fully.

Even though Link knew the baby wasn’t his he still wanted to be there for Amelia and support her through every decision. Link really enjoyed Amelia’s company tho they’ve been only been hanging out for a month or two.

After her conversation with Link Amelia went to find Owen. Amelia pulled out her phone and sent a quick text to Owen telling him to meet her at the park they need to talk about something important.

Amelia sat at the park patiently waiting for Owen, she took out her phone and started playing a game when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She looked up to see Owen smiling above her with Leo in his arms. She smiled seeing her little boy with him cause she thought he wasn’t going to bring Leo.

“Hey you brought Leo with you,” Amelia smiled.

“Yea he really isn’t the biggest fan of Teddy yet so I thought I’d bring him with since he adores you so much,” Owen said taking a seat next to Amelia.

“But what’s up why’d you text me to meet you at the park?” Owen asked nervously.

“Well I was talking to Carina and I find out I’m pregnant,” Amelia said grabbing Leo out of Owen’s arms.

“Aw congratulations,” Owen said with a kind of sad look on his face.

“At first I thought Link was the father but turns out Link can’t have kids,” Amelia said looking at Owen to see if he’ll catch on.

“ Who’s the father Amelia?” Owen asked looking at her.

“Owen Hunt is the father of the baby” Amelia said playing with Leo’s fingers.

“Oh .... Wait the baby is mine’s,” Owen said smiling.

“Why are you so happy you just had a baby and you’re newly into a relationship?” Amelia asked looking at him as if he was crazy.

“Because I’ve always dreamt of you carrying our baby,” Owen said.

“But I think we should continue seeing the people we are seeing and just co-parent this little peanut,” Amelia said placing her hand on her stomach.

“This is what were calling the baby Peanut?” Owen asked laughing.

“Yea I guess since we don’t know the gender yet and the since the baby is little why not,” Amelia smiled.

“Ok our peanut it is,” Owen said placing his hand over hers on her stomach.

Couple months later

Owen has been at all of Amelia’s doctor’s appointment they also know the gender they refuse to tell anyone until the baby is born. Amelia wanted to keep it a secret their baby is perfectly healthy and their little peanut is a girl.

It early in the morning Owen is at home with Teddy, Allison, and Leo.

“Hey Teddy, Leo and I are going to see Amelia we’ll be back later ok?” Owen yelled while he was getting Leo ready.

“Yea sure tell Amelia I said Hello and how is pregnancy doing her?” Teddy yelled back.

Owen told about Amelia’s pregnancy and how he was the father cause he didn’t want to keep it from her. Teddy handled the situation well she understood but she felt as if she was losing Owen to Amelia. Due to the fact that he never misses one of Amelia’s doctor appointments and he always calls and checks on her. Teddy would also caught him staring at Amelia lustfully sometimes and if Amelia tells him she’s having a certain craving at anytime he will stop what he was doing to get it for her. But Owen was good with the kids he is always there when Teddy needs help with Allison and he spends a lot of time with Allison.

At Amelia’s doctor appointment

Amelia is now six months pregnant and looking amazing she has put on about 10-15 pounds this pregnancy.

“How are you feeling Amelia?” Owen asked placing his hand on her growing stomach.

“I’m feeling fat cause peanut is always hungry I think she’s going to be a big baby,” Amelia said smiling.

Leo pointed to her stomach babbling something her and Owen couldn’t make out until he said....

“Baby,” Leo said putting his hand on Amelia bare stomach.

Owen and Amelia just sat there in shock cause they never heard him say that.

“Good job mr.Leo you are correct there is an baby in there,” Carina said as she put the cold gel on Amelia stomach.

“Would you like to help to look for the baby?” Carina said as she reached her arms out towards him and reached for and she picked him up letting him help her.

“When did he learn how to say baby?” Amelia asked Owen who just shrugged his shoulder cause Leo has never said that before.

“Okay there she is and look at what she’s doing,” Carina said turning the screen towards them.

Amelia and Owen looked at the screen so see their baby girl sucking her thumb. Amelia and Owen couldn’t but to smile because it was too freaking cute. From ultrasound they could already tell she had Amelia’s lips and nose and everything else was Owen’s.

Owen looked over at Amelia to see she was crying he smiled and wiped the tears from her eyes. He knew Amelia was scared to go through with this pregnancy since what happened to Christopher. He smiled because he knew how much she wanted this baby and she wanted their baby to be healthy.

“She looks just like you,” Amelia said still wiping the tears from her eyes.

“Thank you Mr. Leo you were a great assistant and Amelia you can schedule your next appointment before you leave.” Carina said before leaving out the room.

When they left the doctor’s appointment they decided they would go baby shopping for the nursery at Amelia’s condo. First they were going to drop Leo off at Mer’s for a little bit cause Leo isn’t the biggest fan of shopping or being patient enough to stay in line.

Owen and Amelia walked through the baby store and picked all type of things out like a crib, high chair, car seat, bassinet, clothes, blankets, bottles, breast pumps, toys, decoration, and etc. Amelia and Owen decided the theme of the nursery would be white and gray with ballerinas everywhere. While they were on their way to the register Amelia saw a beautiful frame that said my family and she grabbed it.

At Amelia’s condo

Owen just got done painting the nursery walls gray while Amelia was washing all the baby clothes they bought for peanut. Owen started working on putting the crib together when Amelia came in and sat in the rocking chair.

“Owen do you have any name idea for our sweet little girl?” Amelia asked folding clothes in the rocking chair.

“Yea just a few you?” Owen asked screwing some screws in the bed.

“I got two wanna hear em?” Amelia said.

“Of course I got one name I really love for this baby,” Owen said.

“Now I wanna know the one name you have for peanut,” Amelia said.

“Okay I really like the name Stormy for the baby’s name,”Owen said.

“That funny cause the two names I had were Stormy and Emma,” Amelia said laughing.

“Then I guess her name is Stormy,” Amelia said looking at her belly.

Owen finished the crib and walked over towards the rocking chair and put his hand on her baby bump rubbing it up and down.

“Hey Stormy I’m your dad,” Owen said.

Amelia laughed but when Owen said that Stormy kicked.

“Ok now that we have a first name what about her middle name I really like Rose or Elsie.” Owen said.

“I like Elsie but how about Emerson I want a strong sounding middle name,” Amelia said.

“Okay I like that Stormy Emerson Hunt or Shepherd- Hunt?” Owen said.

“She’s just Hunt,” Amelia said.

After they finished the nursery Amelia had a surprise Owen and Leo more for Leo than Owen. She told Owen to follow her to the spare room in her condo. She stop at the door then opened it the room was designed for Leo there were dinosaurs everywhere because Leo has been so into dinosaurs lately.

“Amelia he is going to love this,”Owen smiled.

“I hope so I wanted to start spending more time with Leo if that’s ok,” Amelia said.

“Of course why not he freaking loves you,” Owen said.

Owen and Amelia enjoyed their day together Leo stayed with Amelia and Owen went back home with Teddy and Allison.

2 months later

Amelia was sitting on her couch watching a movie with Link. Link had his hand on her stomach Amelia was cool with it but it didn’t feel as when Owen would rub her belly. Stormy started kicking extremely hard and it was starting to get painful for Amelia. Amelia started to shift and turn in her seat.

“Are you okay Amelia?” Link asked.

“Um the baby is starting to kick extremely hard mind talking to it for me?” Amelia asked putting her hand on her stomach.

“Okay Hi baby i’m link your mommy’s boyfriend I can’t wait to meet you and see how much you look like your mommy,” Link spoke which didn’t help at all.

Amelia knew what would make her calm down but she didn’t want to do it since Link was there. Usually when stormy was kicking like this the sound of Owen’s voice would calm her down a bit. Amelia sat there a couple more minutes trying to handle the pain.

“Amelia please just call Owen I know you don’t want to do it cause I’m here and you think I’m going to be upset but I won’t this is his child there isn’t anything I could do about that,” Link said handing her, her phone.

Amelia pressed on Owen’s name and the phone rang three times before he answered.

“Hi Amelia,” Owen said sounding as if he was sleeping.

“I’m sorry if I woke you but the baby is kicking really hard and won’t calm down,” Amelia sound.

“It’s fine I just put Leo and Alli to sleep so put me on speaker,” Owen said.

Amelia did as Owen said and put he on speaker sitting the phone on her belly.

“You’re on speaker phone,” Amelia said.

“Hi baby mommy told me you’re giving her a hard time,”Owen spoke and stormy calmed down entirely.

“I think she’s going to be a daddy’s girl cause she stopped thank you Owen,” Amelia said smiling.

Link saw the smile on Amelia and that said it all she was falling for Owen again and there was no stopping it.

“I’m just going to go,” Link said getting up.

“Why what’s wrong?” Amelia said getting up.

“I know you don’t see it but I do you’re still in love with Owen and now that you’re having his baby you’re falling more and more in love him everyday and I can’t sit here and watch you fall for him. Amelia I like you very much and I want what’s best for you and that little baby and me and you being together isn’t what’s best,” Link said.

“Link I’m sorry I do like you a lot I don’t even know how to stop falling for Owen,”Amelia said about to cry.

Link sat next to Amelia and pulled her in a hug he knew she couldn’t help her feeling but he would continue to support her and be there for her. He knew they could have a very great friendship instead of relationship.

Link kissed her forehead and said.. “Amelia I will continue to support and be there for you as a friend okay?”

Amelia nodded her head little did she know Owen was still on the phone and he heard everything. Owen smiled cause he was still deeply in love with but thought it was best to let her go and be with Teddy.

A month later

Amelia’s labor

Owen held Amelia’s as she walked around the hospital to help her labor going by faster. After while of walking they were back in Amelia’s hospital room. Amelia was handling labor like an champ. Amelia labor lasted 7 hours before she brought their beautiful baby girl into the world.

“Good job Amelia here she is,” Carina said as she sat stormy on to her mother’s chest.

“You did amazing Amelia she’s gorgeous,” Owen said kissing Amelia forehead.

“I know she looks just like you I love you Owen,” Amelia said outta breathe.

“I love you more thank you for bring our beautiful stormy into this world and for loving me and Leo,” Owen said kissing her lips passionately.

Owen and Teddy broke three weeks ago because Owen told her truth about he was feeling they agreed to co-parent and she’s finally with someone who loves her and only her.

An hour later Mer and Maggie walked in with Leo and Teddy and Tom brought Allison too. Amelia smiled she looked at her and stormy family. Amelia asked Carina to take a picture of them case this is the perfect picture to put in the frame she bought for the nursery.

“Okay you have to tell us this beautiful baby’s name.” Teddy said looking at Amelia smiling.

“Alright her name is Stormy Emerson Hunt,” Amelia said looking down at her beautiful baby girl before passing her to Owen.

This is a Jurassic Park/Jurassic World related post. Because the franchise has been on my mind. Spoilers for Fallen Kingdom possibly.

To be honest, I seriously dislike the concept of because the dinosaurs are out in the main land. People expect something like Planet Of The Apes or going to war with the dinosaurs. When actually that whole concept of itself is unrealistic.

While at first before I before I understood more of the themes in Jurassic Park/Jurassic World. I wanted that or just the idea of dinosaurs on the main land. But understanding the themes and what makes the Jurassic franchise so intriguing, I’m very bothered a lot of folks want this. 

Including I’m grateful Collin Trevorrow is not going this route. Because the way he talks about it makes sense. Despite they were cloned, the dinosaurs are animals. Including I’ve said this to myself is that people should not expect Jurassic World 3 to be Rampage but with Dinosaurs, or just the Planet Of The Apes way. These dinosaurs are literally fucking animals.

In fact this is one of the reasons why I stopped watching Mr. H Reviews. For some reasons and I didn’t wanna watch his fully review on Fallen Kingdom yeah I’m sounding stupid. But seeing he made a video on what Collin said but I only read the comments....I just don’t watch Mr. H anymore. 

Along with the fact I love channels like Klayton Fioriti, I’ve discovered a Youtuber that has earned my respect. His name is Shinobi-03, been watching some of his videos right now. Especially the first video of his response to the Nostalgia Critic’s review on the movie. Including I’ve seen parts of Shinobi’s third video like the final half or so. The first video I watched of this guy was on Collin’s words on the whole dinosaurs attacking cities stuff.

In fact just watching Shinobi I’ve realized a lot of the people or YouTubers that reviewed Fallen Kingdom didn’t seem to understand and learning more information....I just can’t trust certain people now. Yeah it’s opinions but just...it’s bothersome now.

Let me say this, despite the negative reaction over time has gotten me to not talk much on Fallen Kingdom. I do enjoy the film, I’m torn on it being my third favorite Jurassic film or it could be The Lost World. But when I think about it, it’s probably my third after Jurassic World and the original Jurassic Park.

I think my biggest criticism of the movie it’s basically a big prequel to Jurassic World 3. That’s what bothers me. It’s a big set up for the next film. Yet at times I’ve wondered if it was the right thing to see the film four times. I think I’m glad I did. Including I remembered I was worried the film might flop because of the reception because even though the film was only out for a few days or I guess a week or so. It’s been a year since then.

Yet also this is my opinion, it’s just my thought process has been changing on stuff. I just wanted to make this, and I’m sorry this ramble went on too long.

Edit just a heads up I hope Jurassic World 3 really delivers. I honestly don’t mind Collin as a director. He’s someone I respect. But I’ll admit I hope Jurassic World 3 is better than Fallen Kingdom where it will win back fans. Because Fallen Kingdom had set up a lot of stuff. Because this is the movie I and a lot of fans have been waiting for. Especially spoilers from the original novel. It actually touched on parts of the concept of dinosaurs on the main land. We should just wait and see. Including hopefully I see it four times as well.

Also that teaser for Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous was awesome. Cool it’s coming to Netflix. Edit sorry again but what sucks 2021 is far away.

I would always prefer to read an article rather than watch/listen to a person talk about a subject. 16. I love all nature and animals, and I’m that weirdo who gets excited and exclaims “ooh!” when they see a sparrow or a crow. No creature is too ‘common’ to warrant an excited response from me :’DD 17. Apart from cats, my biggest animal obsession is foxes. Love foxes. 18. Also a humongous fan of dinosaurs, in case that hadn’t come across through the fact that my nickname both irl and everywhere is “saurus”. 19. My favourite dinosaurs are velociraptors and bronto- and brachiosaurses. 20. I SUCK at differentiating between left and right, especially under pressure. 21. I’m a big film watcher in general, not just Star Wars, or Dinsey hehe. I love watching films and rating them. I’ve currently got somewhere around 1k films rated on IMDB, and that definitely won’t include all the ones I’ve seen, as I frequently come across one I know I’ve watched but haven’t rated, lol. 22. I’m terrible at remembering to rate the films I’ve seen or books I’ve read. 23. I used to smoke, but managed to quit about 8ish years ago, and that is definitely among the best things I’ve done for myself, and something I’m sort of proud of that I managed it hehe... 24. On three separate occasions across one summer, I found a person who was dying or severely injured, and had to call an ambulance for them. 43. Second Look Review: ‘A Little Adventure’

And here begins a review series of Voltron’s season 7, written up as i re-watch it. This is equal parts as a writing exercise and as me just wanting to share my thoughts and observations.

I’ll try to go light on meta and theories, sticking to just the facts, ma’am.

Well, that’s what I intended to happen, but this episode was very personal from the start, what with all the Shiro backstory.

Part 1: Laugh So You Don’t Cry

Part 2: The Meeting

So hey! It’s that back story everyone’s been screaming for, and boy, does this episode deliver. I really wish it had been solely dedicated to that story, though. I’m not a fan of the high drama/humorous aside splits they keep giving us. I know they do that to keep things interesting, cause hey, rated TV-Y7, right? But I always come out the other side of it feeling like I have emotional whiplash.

I’m a big damn nerd, so you know I had to look this up. Here’s what I found:

In 2018 though, a new NASA mission - Solar Probe Plus - will be launched. Designed to come as close as 8.5 solar radii to the Sun (that’s about about 5.9 million kilometers or 3.7 million miles), it will hit orbital velocities as high as 200 kilometers a second (450,000 miles an hour).

To just put that incredible figure into perspective - going this fast would get you from the Earth to the Moon in about ½ an hour. It is also about 0.067% the speed of light. (source: Scientific American -”The Fastest Spacecraft Ever?”)

I have no idea if they’re counting his record against something like that, or manned flight, for which the record is 107,000 km/h. That’s uh..that’s us. On Earth. We haven’t sent people into independent solar orbit yet.

And now we have the simulator. We get that call back to “Taking Flight”, which I found to be a nice touch.

Keith, you’re the only one who could possibly fly through this.

And then Keith steals Shiro’s car and his heart, wasting no time in attempting to push him away. And he doesn’t just keep it between the two of them; Keith’s got a lot of misguided anger to share.

Nothing will endear you to your new classmates faster than signing the whole group up for a collective punishment.

But lessons are learned and everyone calms down.

..oh. Whoops.

Yes, the good ol’ collective punishment: let the jerkass’ peers sort them out. And maybe it would have worked in this case, except for the fact that Keith respects exactly no one.

When this episode first aired, I was seeing yelling about James being a bully, but to be honest, this is more of a case of two shithead kids being shitheads to each other. Keith doesn’t care how his actions affect others, and James reacted by going for a low blow about Keith’s parents.

I suppose they sorted each other out in the end, didn’t they?

So here’s Keith, the angry, lost kid, acting out in desperation and loneliness, and Shiro, who we now see risking his own good name to help him.

Why would he do that?

Now, a lot of what I come up with in the next part is my interpretation of Shiro based on my own experiences, because that’s all I have to go on. My one big gripe about this is that we don’t see Shiro until he’s a young adult. What was he like growing up? Does he try to help Keith because he’s a sweet guy, or does he relate to him in some way?

We may never really know. For my own purposes, I’m going to assume that it’s more of the latter.

Let’s look back at this interaction:

Shiro: “That’s the Calypso, the first ship to carry astronauts to the moons of Jupiter.”

Keith: “It took them three years to get there. Longest voyage of its kind.”

Shiro: “That’s right. Reading about that mission is what made me wanna be a pilot. Those astronauts braved the unknown.”

Nerd break: 

The Juno probe made it to Jupiter in 5 years, arriving in 2015.

Right now it takes 9.5 years to get to Pluto

Keith knows about the Calypso. You might think that the tiny, emo kid doesn’t seem the type to be into nerd stuff, right?

But I get it.

I didn’t have the best time growing up, and we know that after the death of his father, neither did Keith. I had one big obsession that got me through the badness: space. Sorry, two: space and dinosaurs. And giant mech shows. Er...three big obsessions.

But space was the biggest and realest. The 90s were an exciting time for space exploration, with the Voyager probes finishing up their grand tours, the ISS being built, and the first rovers being sent to Mars. It felt good. It felt hopeful.

And I think maybe Keith may have felt the same about space. After all, space was a big unknown. By nature, it couldn’t be good or bad, right? Not like home.

Or maybe it’s because he’s half Galra and always knew that he wasn’t fully of Earth. Or maybe it was both.

I can imagine that Shiro may have thrown himself into space for similar reasons. Because you know what really sucks having deal with growing up? Chronic Illness.

Part 3: Invisible

We come to realize, right along with Keith, that Shiro is sick.

When I’d first heard about this, I was both saddened and ecstatic. It’s not often that I get to relate in any way to a strong, capable, wonderful fictional character. ‘Cool!’, I thought to myself, ‘He’s a sicko like me.’ Immediately, my next thought was ‘Damn, he’s a sicko like me…’

Then a few things about his character began to fall into place.

I think we all noticed Shiro pushing Keith into the place of leadership via the phrase “If anything ever happens to me...”. And Shiro being chronically ill explains that. I’d been wondering for a while about what Shiro’s deal could be. Why did he think something was going to happen to him? Was is just planning for every eventuality, or was it something else?

Shiro’s a great leader, so it was probably both. But him being ill puts a new perspective on things.

When you’re chronically ill, you have to think about things a lot more than other people. You have to plan heavily for ‘what ifs’, and you had better be prepared. 

Back in July, a friend and I took a trip to a con. This had been the first trip I’ve been on in years since I’ve been so damn sick. The preparation alone was exhausting. I had to make sure I had everything with me, and backups of everything just in case something happened. I had to make sure my meds and supplies were in reach if I needed them right away, but I also had to make sure that they were cool and out of the summer sun, because if they got too hot, they’d stop working.

The con was six hours away from home, and if I had needed replacements of these things, I would have to make soooo many phone calls and likely beg for help.

I had to have a conversation with my friend about what to do in case I had “an incident”. It’s humiliating; I’m a grown ass adult that has to preemptively ask people for help. Even though she’s my best friend, and I trust her so very much, it sucks.

In the end, everything was fine, but only because of careful planning. I can’t tell you how much I miss the days of just being able to go, to do, to not have to think about everything that could go wrong and possibly kill me.

So what I’m really saying here is that Shiro most likely has a lot of experience planning for eventualities. He’s also swallowed enough of his pride to discuss these things with Keith by the time the main story begins. And note: it’s only Keith he shares these things with, not the others. I don’t share these things with people who aren’t very, very close to me either.

Well, present company excluded, of course.

And here’s the part that  I go projecting onto Shiro again, but as I said previously, until they give more backstory, it’s all I have to go on.

So, what about Shiro’s family?

That’s something that’s been talked about in the fan space for a while, too. Is he an orphan? Did they disown him? Unfortunately, the flashbacks we get don’t go back that far. All I have to go on to answer that are my own experiences, which are not good.

My heart swells every time I see someone talk about how their family supports them as they deal with their illnesses. How good it is that they have love and stability to help them through.

I don’t have that. I never did. My home life sucked before I got sick, and illness certainly didn’t help.  I can say with certainty that if I had spent years in space out of contact with them, I wouldn’t be too broken up about it. There’d have been no video messages home, is what I’m saying.

I could see Shiro at this point in the flashbacks, gifted and celebrated, throwing himself at everything he could, working hard to prove that he’s worth something, proving that you’re not a lost cause just because you’re sick. I found myself wanting to prove things, too, taking on tasks and making plans and trying to show the world that I’m still useful, that I’m not lazy. See? I didn’t cause my own illness in an attempt to get out of responsibilities.

You’ll still get rejected, though.

So you learn to hide your illness from people that don’t need to know about it.

Shiro may have been like Keith: a lost, angry kid, pushing people away before they can make the decision to leave. It’s a difficult thing to grow up and only see disappointment in the eyes of the people who are supposed to be there for you. Again and again, they let you know in so many ways that you’re difficult to deal with, that somehow you’re a burden on them.

I can’t know for sure about Shiro, but I know that this is the truth for Keith. I completely understand why Keith would end up so attached to Shiro, the only person who was actually putting in a real effort to help him. I wish I’d had my own Shiro, ya know?

I can’t be all doom and gloom about this, though. I still like that one idea that Shiro was raised by his grandparents. I like to think that it was a happier time for him, as my time spent with my own grandparents was for me.

Of course, I could be completely wrong about all of this, and projecting way too much of my own problems onto him. For the sake of any alternate realities where Shiro is a real person, I hope that I am.

Meet Ryan North, Writer on Bravest Warriors

And lots of other stuff too: you probably know Ryan from his writing on the Adventure Time and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic book series. He’s also the mind behind the iconic Dinosaur Comics, in which clip art T-Rex, Utahraptor and Dromiceiomimus philosophize on the tri-weekly. He may be the biggest comics star out there who doesn’t draw!? Regardless, I’d like to see a challenger face off against him; he is, apparently, very tall. I caught up with Ryan just as he was in the midst of ECCC 2018:

When did you know you wanted to be a writer, or did it just kind of happen?

There was no "sit straight up in bed at midnight, suddenly wide awake, and whisper 'I want to be a writer'" moment, if that's what you're wondering!  But it's always been something I enjoyed. I went to school for computer science (and have a masters in computational linguistics) but when I graduated I had the choice to a) get a real job, or b) be a writer, and all I had to do to become a writer was fail to get a real job. And it turns out it's really easy to not get a job!

Having studied computer science, you created tech for webcomic authors - how did those projects come about? What other ways have your programming skillz intersected with your creative career?

That's true! The thought process was basically, "There is a service that does not exist, so I guess I'll have to write it.” There were a couple: RSSPECT for rss feed generation (remember RSS? I MISS IT), and Project Wonderful for advertising that doesn't suck. That continues on to this very day!  And of course when it came to writing Squirrel Girl for Marvel, I made her a computer science student too, so there's the intersection.

So if you don’t draw, what motivated you to get into comics - were you just that big a fan?

I was more of a fan in abstract, really - I couldn't get comics growing up, and this was before the internet. But then when I got a job as an undergrad, I took my first paycheque and walked into a comic shoppe and just started buying things at random, and loved them all, so it was nice that my theoretical interest in comics was actually real. I started Dinosaur Comics - my fixed art webcomic - in my last year of undergrad.

Did you discover the dinosaur artwork for Dinosaur Comics - or did they find you?

Some would argue, quite convincingly, that they are a universal constant, and can never be either created or destroyed.

What do you consider your finest accomplishment?

I would like to go to two places: Antarctica and space. I sell plush T-Rexes from Dinosaur Comics at topatoco.com/qwantz, and some AMAZING READERS brought him to both the South Pole, and the edge of space. It is a weird feeling to be jealous of a fictional character you created, but it's a good one. And I'm gonna take all the credit for T-Rex's accomplishments here, even though I had nothing to do with them.

What can you tell us about your writing process? What would you recommend to young writers trying to get disciplined/motivated?

Figure out where and how you work. You have to be honest with yourself. For example, I know that I work best in the morning, and I rarely do good work after 5pm. So I get up at 7am and I write until it's 5pm, and then I stop. I also know that I work best alone, so I don't go to coffee shops or hang out with friends to write. If I'm working, I'm alone. Knowing this lets me set up the circumstances that help me get work done. It's more fun to hang out with friends, but at least this way when I do it I know it's hanging out, so I don't try to work during it, and I can enjoy it for what it is instead of feeling guilty about not working.

Does it work pretty smoothly, writing comics like Squirrel Girl and Adventure Time and having them illustrated by other (super talented) folks?

I've been really lucky, I think, in always collaborating with amazing people.  Braden Lamb and Shelli Paroline were my partners on Adventure Time, and we just clicked as a team and we're still great friends, years after the book ended.  We even made our own comic together: The Midas Flesh, published by Boom! BOX - it's about King Midas in space. And with Squirrel Girl it's the same - Erica (Henderson) and I get along great and my favourite thing is getting back art from her - or any artist - because you get to see your words and scenes transformed into pictures that are even better than you imagined.  

What are your thoughts about writing branching narratives / "make your own story" books - are they the Future? What are the biggest challenges, and what have you been most proud of in that area?

I mean, I like them! I like how they capture a lot of the semantics of gaming in a different medium. The challenge is keeping track of state: in a game you can pick up a sword or not pick up a sword, and that's easy: just set a variable. In a book you need to have a choice to pick up that sword, and then every option after that choice has to be duplicated, or else you lose track of whether they picked up the sword or not. There are ways to get around this but most of them involve cheating in some way (ie: just asking the reader if they have the sword, to which they will always say, "Oh yes absolutely, I just love swords especially now that I know they're useful.” So it's always something to keep in mind.

I guess the most impressive thing we had happen was the Kickstarter for To Be or Not To Be: my chooseable-path version of Hamlet.  We raised over $580,000 (for a book!), which was the most-funded publishing project on Kickstarter at the time. That was a crazy book.

How did you come to write for Bravest Warriors?

I was already a fan of the show (having come in after the first season) so it was a matter of saying yes when I was asked if I was interested!  I WAS.

What are your favorite things about Beth, Danny, Wallow and Chris?

For me it's the teamwork: these are people who mess up - and save - the universe on the regular. Also, I love competent characters, and Beth is clearly the most competent character of the bunch. BETH4EVER.

What's your favorite thing about Bravest Warriors in general?

The series is set both in the future AND in space, which are my favourite time periods / general locales to be in. It opens things up to basically any kind of story you can imagine, which is terrific. No idea is too out-there for the Bravest Warriors, which is super fun for a writer, and hopefully super-fun to watch too!  In my first episode (RoboChris) I got to invent an evil robot Chris, and everyone said "Okay, awesome, let's absolutely go with that”.

If you had to describe your writing style in a few words, how would you?

Enthusiastic! And also maybe a little teeny eensie bit wordy.

What are your favorite cartoons, and the biggest inspirations of your work?

I grew up on The Real Ghostbusters, and I loved that that show wasn't afraid to tackle big ideas in what was supposed to be just a tie-in show for a goofy movie (SORRY BUT GHOSTBUSTERS IS GOOFY). It's a lesson I try to take with me: you don't need to talk down to kids, teens, anyone: they're smart, and they'll pick up what you're laying down. Plus that show had Slimer, which I will argue RIGHT NOW is the original Catbug. The longer I get into answering this question the more parallels I see!

Would you ever want to make your own cartoon?

OBVIOUSLY, THAT WOULD BE AMAZING.

Pop Comics #2: Dark Nights: Metal #1

So this is the second installment of my more informal writing series(my, me rambling into an open window on my desktop...series) on popular monthly comics.  Each week I pick a comic from the top 10 on Comixology's best seller list, and I read it...and then I come over here and write about it.  This week: Dark Nights: Metal #1

Dark Nights: Metal #1 was written by Scott Snyder, penciled by Greg Capullo, inked by Jonath Glapion, colored by FCO Plascencia.  It's I guess the start of the new DC event or something.  I'm not sure.  The issue starts with the JLA in some sort of arena battle scenario on some planet Mongul has taken over.  They figure that whole situation out, return home, and there's a giant mountain that has appeared in Gotham.  They go into said mountain, see some shit.  Cyborg is like "man this shit is some shit, huh?" and then the Blackhawks show up.  Which I thought they were like a WWII team or something, but apparently they are like...I don't even know...Batman.  And they're run by Kendra Sanders, the I don't know what she is in this continuity but I think she's Hawkgirl or whatever.  Or is it Hawkwoman.  I don't remember.  Probably girl, right?  Let's see...it's woman if they are their own hero.  Girl if they are a female knock off.  But then reverts back to woman if they are a lesbian knock off of a male hero....  I think that's how it works.  

Anyways.  Kendra Sanders convinces the JLA to come to her secret base to explain how Batman is the vessel of some ancient evil, which is callback to Morrison's Batman RIP ish run stuff after final crisis--which I did read!  I vaguely remember some of that.  But so they've done all this research on batman, but still just pull guns on him, and so of course he escapes.  For some reason he is able to fool the whole JLA who don't think to look for him...at his Bat Cave?  I don't know. So batman is at his bat cave like looking at nth metal on his microscope.  He finds some journal from carter hall.  And just as carter hall is like "look batman, I know you think shit might not be shit, but let me assure you, shit is way fucking the shit" Dream...from Sandman...shows up and is like "Batman, this shit is about to get real(shit)".  The end. 

  And I'm not sure if Dream is now just running around normally in DCU continuity again, or if this is meant to be something like special.  Either way, you can see in the above image, Dream has apparently sent his stylist to hell this time. Either way....holy shit.  It's a first issue of a superhero comic, and so of course it ends in a splash page shocking reveal cliffhanger at the end.  I mean this whole thing is just so by the numbers for how you do event comics it is just hollow.  Heroes do a thing seemingly unrelated to the main thing, the big thing happens, it's like multiverse spanning, splash page reveal...the end.  Even Capullo's art here looks bored with itself.  There's two panels in this comic that I can recommend.  One is a small panel of Superman:

The other panel is when Batman is riding a dinosaur, which I still didn't even bother to take a picture of.  On the whole, it makes Howard Porter look like JG Jones.  And this is supposed to be a big event comic.  If all of these event comics are just going to be continuity porn they should at least be a spectacle.  I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to take away on any level from a book like this.   Even the Variant covers were pretty mailed in.  Great artists like JRJR and Jim Lee just kinda drawing a standard superhero pinup and calling it a day.  Nothing really on the theme of metal.  You get this sexy idea of doing a heavy metal version of a superhero comic, but then it turns out it's nth metal, and that's not really metal at all.  Go get Joe Jusko to paint Wonder Woman riding a vampire bat out of a lake of blood.  Come on.  Metal.  It's like the Met Gala where all these stars who have the money to have taste show up completely off theme and completely boring giving us nothing even remotely aspriational.   If you asked me why I don't care about superhero comics, this comic is pretty much what I'd conjure up as an example of why.  I'm too old to give a shit about which of these palette swaps dies and then is resurrected or what worlds collide.  And I don't care about good versus evil in these basic cop versus robber terms.  I'm not a child.  But like I'm reading JRJR/Williamson and Nocenti's Typhoid Mary comics this week, and thoroughly enjoying them.  And it's not because I give a shit about Daredevil.  It's because there's actually shit on the page to react to.  There's great art to inspire you.  And the writing is in big bold terms, but it has a certain soap opera quality.  It's not ironic.  It just says what it means and is all about these sappy triangles of people.  It works.  It doesn't matter that it's a superhero comic.  It's just a great comic.  I think what I want from superhero comics now, doesn't have anything to do with them being superhero comics.  It has to do with the two biggest companies putting the most resources behind their comics, I expect to see a quality of work, particularly artistically that I can look at and just be in awe and be like "never in a thousand years could I draw that".  I think people don't respect the art in these things anymore because the styles artists have adopted don't scare people, don't put them in awe.  And honestly neither does the writing.  People read these things and they are just like "oh man, I could do this" which is cool, I mean I'm one of those people.  But it's not healthy in terms of the sort of reverence the top artists in the comics game should demand. No one was stepping to Neal Adams or Norm Breyfogle. But I mean, I think it's just a paycheck, and it reads like that--which makes sense, because why would grown adults who have been in the industry for decades in some cases, and who have already written like a million superhero things--past a point, you just get that formula, hit those marks, cash those checks, and try and whittle away on whatever your actual passion is in the background, like the rest of us. But then meanwhile this is the stuff that gets geeks breathless and hyperbolic...and for what.  What is all of this for?  It's just this cycle of fans pushing up artists until they are gibbering self parodies of themselves, and then dropping them off creator cliff to go die in a ditch somewhere.  And these fan groups, what do they do with their shit?  Stay in this false dream for as long as they can.  Throw a tantrum at anyone who says anything negative or threatening to that dream?  Like there's no wrong way to live, all of our lives are meaningless, so value is an illusion.  You just do what best makes sense for you to pass the time until you die.  But for me, this shit fucks up my hustle, because I'm in this life game to see shit.  I want things that at least aspire to be something I haven't seen before.  At least TRY to be beautiful.  But the demands of these fan things, are so insane, who has time for beauty?  And because that's where the money is, it just sucks people in and traps them there until there is nothing left.   You see the effects of this stuff at Image where creators are supposedly let loose to do their passion projects, but they've been so warped by working these fan projects, that there's very little truth left to them.  And all these big two tics of how to do issue #1 arc #1 and so on and so forth come up and really mar work.  It's not just the writing.  It happens to artists too.  There's like a set way these sort of things get laid out on the page, and certain stock ways you do a scene because you're like double shipping a book and don't have time to really like consider the absolute best way for you as an individual to do a book.    So even when artists get outside of that infrastructure, it is usually too late and they are reduced in potential by their habits.  I mean I can't be the only one who can open a comic from these sorts of people, and your eyes just glaze over as you see it's just the same thing.  It's appropriate that this thing ends with Dream, because this comic is sleepwalking.  Like most of the most talented people in comics. Every month you have the opportunity to say one thing to an audience of several thousand.  Which is huge for a comic.  And you are going to say...what?  You are going to show them....what?

17. Who would be your ideal partner?Okay, um… Well, they definitely need to like animals, cuz I do not trust people who don’t like or respect animals. They also need to like video games. Considering I spend a lot of my time playing them, and really hope to one day be involved in video game production and/or design, I feel like my partner should also have an appreciation for video games. Plus ideal casual date is cuddling on the couch and playing games together, so a shared love of gaming kinda feels like a must ^^; Plus with online games we can still hang out even if we’re not together so yeah. Video games. Also liking anime would be great, since I love watching anime and going to cons and cosplaying (oh shit couple cosplaying tho yes plz~!!) so sharing an interest there would be great! Plus then if we’re not in the mood to game, we can just cuddle and watch anime. Also having a genuine kind and caring soul is a must. Those are probably the most important points, but I guess it’d be nice if they’re also in touch with their youthful side. I can be a wee bit childish at times myself, so I just wanna make sure I ain’t gonna be judged if I decide I want to eat dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets or cuddle with a plushie lolol Also, not a requirement, but willing to do stuff in the kitchen together would be nice~ And not judging me for watching cooking competition shows every so often would also be nice >->

32. How big is your house?Well, my mom’s house is bigger than my dad’s. That said, neither are very large really… My mom and I keep saying how we wish this house had more closet and storage space… And at my dad’s, my room isn’t even attached to the house lol. My brother took my old room, so I now have the small mini-house thing right next to the pool. It’s got a bathroom, a counter for a microwave by the door, and a small bedroom. I like the privacy it has though!

33. What do you typically have for breakfast?Sadly, I often skip breakfast because I rarely wake up before noon lol. When I do have breakfast though, it’s either a bowl of cereal or a bagel with cream cheese

That said, I don’t remember how late I stayed up including class, but due to class time, it was probably another five or seven hours… And it was misery. 0/10, would never recommend

39. Do you have any scars?I do have a small one next to my left eye from when I got bit by a dog when I was five, which was the cause of the hospital visit mentioned a while back

Some are already saying Black Star Renegades is genuinely entertaining and adventurous, and everyone absolutely loves it saying it could be the next biggest thing since Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings!

ComicWatch:  In regards to the writing process, how long did you spend preparing and writing Black Star Renegades?

Michael Moreci:  Weirdly, it moved really fast. Which was good—I like fast, especially when it ensures I don’t get caught thinking about stuff too hard. That said, from when I signed the dotted line with St. Martin’s to writing the book and completing it, it was about nine months. It’s like I had a baby. A book baby.

ComicWatch:  Where did your inspiration come from to write this story?

Michael Moreci: First and foremost, there’s Star Wars. Then there’s Star Wars, and also Star Wars. Did I mention Star Wars?

I mean, kidding aside (sorta), I drew inspiration from a lot of places. Yes, I’m greatly indebted to the galaxy far, far away, but Black Star Renegades is also a loving nod to sci-fi pulps like Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, not to mention samurai flicks like Kagemusha and Sword of Doom. A lot of my loves went into this book.

ComicWatch:  I’ve read that there will be a follow up on Black Star Renegades coming out in 2019. Does this mean a trilogy conspiring?

Michael Moreci: I hope so! It all depends on sales. I’d like to keep writing Black Star Renegades stories for years. The sequel will happen no matter what. Beyond that, it’s dependent on success. It’s looking good—really good—so hopefully we’ll make it!

ComicWatch:  Speaking of the second book, is there anything you can tell us about it, involving the plot, what to expect, anything you think that’s exciting that will get the readers more hyped up about its upcoming release than we already are?

Michael Moreci: Unfortunately, I’m tight-lipped about it. We’ll start talking about it soon, but right now we’re 100% focused on the first book (and book two, technically, isn’t completed yet).

ComicWatch: How long have you been writing in the comic industry?

Michael Moreci: I published my first short comic in 2006 and my first graphic novel, an indie OGN, shortly after. So a solid ten years—and many, many years before that of not getting published!

  ComicWatch: Who or what was your biggest inspiration for writing?

Michael Moreci: Well, Star Wars is the obvious answer. But I’m not too big on inspiration, in a weird way. It’s all about work to me; writing is a job. I love it dearly, but it’s a job. Again, I do it because I love it and because I’m unequipped to do anything else, but it’s my job. If we’re talking about motivation, that’s different. I’m motivated by my compulsion to tell stories. It’s all I want to do; stories are how I understand the world, how I relate to it, and stories are how I best express myself. Plus, I don’t find anything more fun that weaving a good yarn.

ComicWatch: What was your “made it” moment?

Michael Moreci: I mentioned before that I’d done some writing for indie places, but my break came when Tim Seeley offered me an opportunity to write a backup comic for his ongoing Image series, Hack/Slash. That backup became Hoax Hunters, which eventually spun off into its own series. From there, the rest is history. Granted, there were many ups and downs along the way, but I would not be here, no way, unless Tim gave me that chance.

ComicWatch: Did you read comics as a child, and if so what were your favorite characters and titles?

Michael Moreci: Oh, did I ever. Tons. I was mainly a Marvel kid, and my favorite, when I was little, was Spider-Man. Spidey and Superman. As I grew older into the 90s, then I started to love Batman and all the X titles.

ComicWatch:   Have you always wanted to write comics?

Michael Moreci: Without question. I’ve wanted to do it all—I just love storytelling, but comics and novels were my two biggest loves, always.

ComicWatch: What was the first comic you ever wrote?

Michael Moreci: Funny enough, it was a strip I wrote in grade school about a boy and his pet dinosaur. I actually sold stories to other kids and made quite a bit of money.

ComicWatch: What is your favorite comic that you have written?

Michael Moreci: Roche Limit, for sure. It’s incredibly meaningful to me for many, many reasons. Though my new comic, Wasted Space (coming in April from Vault Comics), is slowly creeping up behind Roche Limit.

ComicWatch:  Over the years, what are 3 of your top 10 favorite writers?

Michael Moreci: If we’re talking comic writers, I’d say: Rick Remender, Tim Seeley, and Cullen Bunn.

ComicWatch: What’s your favorite character that you’ve ever worked with? And do you have a character that you haven’t worked with that you’d like to have the chance to work with?

Michael Moreci: Working on Superman was an absolute dream come true. I mean…it’s Superman. You can’t beat that, you just can’t.

My ultimate fantasy, though, is to write the Fantastic Four. Always has been, always will be.

ComicWatch: What are 3 of your favorite storylines?

Michael Moreci: Tough question! Let’s see, Remender’s Uncanny X-Force is definitely one, then there’s Hickman’s Fantastic Four/FF, and I’d round out with…either Claremont’s X-Men or The Great Darkness Saga.

ComicWatch: What’s next for you, other than your upcoming novel?

Michael Moreci: I mentioned Wasted Space, which I’m VERY excited about. I describe it as being Preacher as written by Philip K. Dick, and if that doesn’t sell you, I don’t know what will. I have another novel coming between Black Star Renegades 1 and 2 called The Throwaway, which is a spy thriller. Then a few more things up my sleeve which haven’t been announced yet…[YES]!!!!

ComicWatch:  What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given when first getting into Comics?

Michael Moreci: The best advice I have isn’t limited to comics, it’s writing in general: To make it as a career, you have to realize it’s a marathon, not a sprint. I see so many people get down about rejection, beating themselves up over this and that, and I want to tell them all that your career isn’t defined by one failure. You’re going to fail all the time. The people who make it are the ones who keep going. That’s all you have to do: Keep going. (I mean, hone your craft as well and don’t suck—but, duh.)

ComicWatch: Do you have any plans to turn Black Star Renegades into a comic series?

Michael Moreci: Not really, no. I think the two mediums have some crossover, but I don’t think the translation would work the way I’d want it to. They’re different beasts, they really are.

ComicWatch Interviewer/David Conine: And the final question, are you looking for an apprentice? You are doing what I live, breathe, and dream to do, and I really admire your work!
