Forever and Always
Joel Miller x F!reader.
Tumblr media
Summary I Your work life is awful and there's nothing you want more after an exhausting day both mentally and physically than to come home to Joel, but on calling him and finding out that's not possible you're dreading the thought of going home to be alone. However, it doesn't seem that that's the case once you actually make it back, and it turns into once of the best and happiest nights of your life. Content/warnings I So much cute fluff, Joel Miller being the most doting and caring boyfriend. 'babygirl', Joel has a cute little saying to let reader know just how much he loves her. Asking to move in together. No use of y/n, no outbreak. A/N I Once again another random idea that popped into my head that I decided to run with. I really hope you enjoy soppy, cute Joel taking care of his woman!
Main masterlist
It always puts a smile on his face when you call. Your name working wonders for the grumpy moods he finds himself in on jobs. Even with the jokes he cracks with Tommy. Nothing compares to when he’s with you, talking to you. Just doing anything that involves you. “Hey baby you, okay?” His husky voice grumbles down the receiver once he’s removed himself away from the bustle of the house, he’s currently working in.
“Joel?” You sniff.
His smile falters. Something is obviously wrong, and whatever’s happened he’ll kill them. No one upsets you. “Babe? Hey, hey what’s wrong?”
“I- sniff- I’m just having such a horrible day. I can’t stand this job anyone, I wana quit so bad. Please can you come over when I finish?” The sobs grow in volume as you force a hand to your mouth to try to quiet them. The impact of hearing those words leave your own mouth proving to you just how much you rely on him.
“Oh baby m’so sorry you’re having a shitty day. Listen we’re on a bad job today m’not gonna finish till super late so I most likely can’t come round. But I’ll call you later okay y’can tell me all about it okay baby. Promise.”
“Okay” you sniff upset he can’t come but you knew he was busy and that it was a long shot. You pine after him when you feel vulnerable like this.
“You know I love you, don’t you?” He grumbles evidently worried he’s in the doghouse.
“I know. I love you too so much.”
“Forever and always baby girl.”
The words making your heart flutter as they always do.
When the call cuts you hold your phone against your chest and sob a little more before psyching yourself up for your afternoon. Your colleagues don’t deserve to know just how bad they make you feel, they’d probably thrive on it if they knew.
So, instead you sort yourself out wash your face, wait till your eyes are less puffy, paint on your smile and go about the remainder of your shift thank fuck it’s Friday.
Of course no one notices, why would they when they make it clear how much they can’t stand you being around.
-
Finally five o’clock arrives and you rush out to your car as quick as you can. Putting on the cheesy cd playlist Joel made you. You love that he’s like that, so unbelievably cheesy, so old fashioned it’s why you adore him the way you do. When yours and Joel’s song comes on tears escape you again. God you’ve never loved someone the way you love him, but these tears you’re spilling are tears of happiness not pain.
When you make it home your shitty mood overcomes you again, the thought of your empty apartment and cold bed. So you settle on the idea of a large glass of red wine, a crappy comfort series and a good cry before you go to sleep. You’re have a day trip with Joel planned tomorrow and that’s enough to keep you going.
However, it’s like you can tell something’s off from the second your key is in the door. After momentarily hesitating you uneasily open your door and those thoughts are made true. Your apartment isn’t dark, cold, nor is it empty. The smell of food hits you so mouth-wateringly beautiful, and the radio is playing softly.
You kick off your shoes and move to the kitchen and there he is, Joel in all his glory slaving away over the stove. Dancing along to the music with an apron round his neck.
He turns to look at you with a smile on his face and it breaks you.
You stand on the spot throw your bag to the floor from your shoulder and cry. But he quickly rushes over “hey shhh it’s okay.” He cradles you close a hand on the back of your head pushing you closer to his chest. Allowing you to inhale his comforting scent.
“S’okay m’here baby.” He mumbles against your hair as he rests his lips against you. Holding you as close as possible.
After a few minutes you pull away red faced and puffy eyes to look up at him. “How did you get here I thought you were busy?”
“M’sorry baby, I know I didn’t think I’d be able to. And I’m so sorry that that made you upset, I really am, but as much as I am super busy at work the second, I heard you cryin’ I knew I needed to make sure I was finishin’ early so I could come over and see you, you mean more to me than any job, any amount of money. So I took a sick day for the remainder.”
“Thankyou” you whisper before moving to grasp at his stubbly cheeks. You smile sadly at him as your thumbs stroke him and then you move your lips to his, kissing him softly.
“I’ve made your favourite baby” he begins once you pull back away. Arms resting round his neck as you stand on your tip toes to be exactly in his eye-line. “And then I want you t’tell me all about this shitty day o’yours so we can get it outa your pretty head. You’re too beautiful to be burdened by that shit.”
You chuckle “I’d really like that, thank you so much for being here.”
“Always baby. Always.”
-
After a long moan fest over Joel’s signature spaghetti and meatballs, you’re cuddling on the couch with your long-awaited red wine.
Your difficult day long forgotten about which is why you love being around him so much, he really does make everything better. Just by being himself- so unapologetically himself.
You’re cuddled into him your feet kicked up behind you as he strokes your side. His calloused fingertips gliding lightly from your hip all the way up to the side of your breast, over and over causing constant goosebumps.
“You know v’been thinkin’” he mumbles softly into the silence.
“Shit did it hurt?” You chuckle as you jest with him, you love when you get the perfect opportunity to use that joke.
He pokes at your side in retaliation, and you giggle into it, loving every second of being with him.
“Seriously now though babygirl, sit up n’look at me.”
Which you do without a moment’s hesitation. You pull away from him so you can face him sat on your knees.
God he’s gorgeous. His beautiful salt and pepper hair slightly longer than he would like but with you adoring him just like that he refuses to cut it.
He takes your hands in his and god it makes you nervous. Butterflies swim around in your stomach as you stare into each other’s eyes.
“I realised somethin’ today.”
Your breathing increases as you reply “what?”
He takes a nervous breath closing his eyes on the inhale and opening them back up to stare right back at you on the exhale. His perfectly pert lips opening just slightly to let the air out. He clears his throat as he shifts slightly in the seat. “Y’belong with me, all the time, all day every day, and it breaks my heart t’think that you could need me and we ain’t together.”
You smile softly at him, you know your rightful place is with him 24/7, there’s nowhere you’d rather be.
But the next words to leave him are so far from what you expected it’s as though time stands still. “Move in w’me.”
“What?” You’re excited from the moment the words leave his lips, but you’re certain you misheard.
“I want you t’move in with me, get out of this lil apartment. Come make my house ours, let’s always be together. No more late nights alone let’s always be there together even if my stupid fuckin’ job means I get in at 2am.”
You squeal throwing your arms around his neck as you practically pounce on him. “Oh my god yes, yes, yes when?”
He chuckles pushing you back slightly so he’s able to look at you once more. “Well I mean we could start moving ya stuff in tomorrow, I know we said we’d go out for the day but-”
“No!” You say it all too quickly and he laughs “I wana move in let’s do that fuck the plans! We can do that any day!” You forcefully hug him again. Pulling away he’s beaming at you “do you promise you mean it?”
“With all my heart baby.” The hand he has resting on your back moves up and down slowly. So soothing, so full of love.
You scream in excitement before kissing him.
When you eventually pull away you look directly into his hooded eyes. “Forever and always?”
“Forever and always babygirl” and he rubs his nose against yours.

Celebrity Crush, Table for Two
Part 2 of Celebrity Crush
Pairing: Tim Bradford x fem!reader
Summary: You go on a date with your celebrity crush after meeting him in uniform. 1.2k+ words of fluff!
Masterlist | Tim Bradford Masterlist | Request Info/Fandom List
A/N: Thanks for the idea @anonymousmuffinbear! I hope you enjoy this. Thanks for reading and all of your kind words!🤍
Tumblr media
You sigh as you fall backward onto your couch. The past week has been busy and stressful, so you have had no time to relax. Now that you're caught up with work, you can finally catch up on everything you’ve wanted to do. Which, admittedly, isn’t much. With your remote, you scroll through your favorite streaming app to find something to watch. A new true crime documentary catches your eye, and you suddenly remember something. Tim Bradford gave you his number, and you haven’t done anything with it.
Before you can find his contact, your phone rings with a call from one of your friends. You love her but do not want to talk or hang out tonight.
“Hello,” you greet, despite every instinct telling you not to answer.
“Hey, girl! We’re going out for mini golf and dinner, are you in?” she asks.
“Not tonight. I’m exhausted, but I’ll try to join next time.”
“Okay, no worries. Get some rest! Oh, hey, how’s your celebrity crush?”
“Tim?”
“No, Rick Castle- yes! Tim!”
“I don’t know,” you admit, picking at your blanket. “I haven’t called him yet. I was about to text him.”
“Don’t text him, call him! You’ve already made that Greek god wait a week for you.”
“He’s probably busy.”
“Call him.”
You can’t argue again before she hangs up on you. As you find the right contact, you shake your head and click the button to text Tim. Tim is a cop, and you will not risk interrupting him in the middle of something important. So, you type out a quick message, hit send before you can overthink it, then set your phone aside and start the documentary about the Hillside Strangler.
“Should I have signed the text?” you ask aloud. You only wrote About that thanks over dinner…
As you wonder if Tim will know who it’s from, your phone buzzes with an incoming message. Tim’s name catches your attention, and you hold your breath as you read his text.
Tell me when and where.
To say you’re surprised would be an understatement, and you’ll never admit to anyone that you bounce up and down on your couch out of pure excitement as you tap out your reply. In a few minutes, you have a dinner set for tomorrow with your celebrity crush at one of LA’s many restaurants. As the narrator sets the scene for a vicious murder on the screen before you, you fall back on the couch with a smile because you have a date with your celebrity crush.
Tumblr media
“What am I supposed to wear?” you grumble as you look through your closet. “Is this even a date? Or just a chance to thank him again?”
You’ve only seen Tim in his uniform, but you know he will look amazing no matter what he wears. On the bright side, he’ll one-up me even if he’s in a t-shirt and sweatpants, you think. You stop as you pull a hanger forward. The perfect outfit was right in front of you the whole time. It just took an hour of stressing to find it.
Soon after, you enter the restaurant and look around, impressed by the atmosphere. More impressive, however, is Tim Bradford smiling at you from beside the hostess stand. He walks toward you, proving that you are right. The man can’t look bad, but he knows how to dress.
“You look beautiful,” Tim says.
“You do, too,” you answer. “Or handsome? You’re both- I… Thanks for meeting me.”
“Are you ready?”
You nod, and Tim offers his arm. With your arm looped through his elbow, you follow him to the table with your eyes on his face the entire time. Tim smiles at you as he pulls your chair out for you, and his fingers trail over your arm as he steps away.
“So,” Tim begins as he sits across from you. “What’s it like being one of the only women in the world that gets to go out with your celebrity crush?”
“Well, the only thing he’s done is help me to my seat and prove that he eavesdropped,” you murmur, looking down at the napkin in your lap.
“If you wanted a nice date, you should’ve chosen a different celebrity crush. I don’t have the best track record,” Tim admits.
You sigh dramatically but smile as you ask, “How soon can you get Aaron Thorsen down here to take over for you?”
“If I sent him a picture of how perfect you look, very quickly.”
“Tim, no one is a great date. Me included,” you promise, offering your hand across the table. “Besides, I thought I was just here to say thank you again and talk about the cases in the documentary.”
“Right,” Tim agrees. “But I’ll need something in return. If I tell you about the cases, you have to tell me about you.”
“Interesting case details for boring personal details? That’s a terrible deal for you.”
“Depends on where you stand.”
You shrug, but Tim takes your hand as a silent promise that he wants to hear about you and get to know you. This is a date, after all.
“You’ve been in three documentaries,” you begin, ignoring the menu and everything else around you. “Which of those cases was your favorite?”
“Morris Mackey,” Tim answers without hesitation.
“Because of Officer Thorsen?”
“Amongst other things. It was an interesting investigation.”
“I have to ask-“
“If seeing Jake Butler dead freaked me out?”
You pinch your brows and finish, “Is your Sergeant really that funny?”
“Oh, yeah,” Tim answers. “Grey is one of the best cops and best men I’ve ever met. Your turn. Why did you approach me in the store last week?”
“Are you kidding? I loved those documentaries, I wasn’t kidding. When else am I going to get the chance to meet someone from one of those?”
“I’m glad you texted,” Tim admits.
“I’m glad you gave me your number. You know, my friends thought my crush on you was weird until they saw you.”
“The Abercrombie model hot cop?” Tim asks with a knowing smile.
“Their words.”
“Are you ready to order?” your waiter asks.
“Oh, right,” Tim says, looking at the menu. “We’re going to need one more minute. Thank you.”
The waiter nods, and you wait until he walks away to laugh. Tim shakes his head as he raises the menu, and you decide right then that this is the best date you’ve ever been on.
Tumblr media
“Thank you, Tim. I had a great time,” you say as Tim walks you to your car.
“I did too,” he replies.
Tim slows and uses your joined hands to pull you toward him. He looks down at your shirt, visible beneath your sweater, and notices it’s the one he gave you from the store.
“Do you think I’m the kind of celebrity crush that can get a second date?” he asks.
You hum as you step closer to him. Slowly, you tilt your chin up and give Tim time to step back. He doesn’t, opting to meet you halfway. When your lips brush against Tim's, he has all the answers he needs. This is not going to be your last date. You raise your hand to his jaw, gently sliding your fingers against his skin before you move back, your other hand still in Tim’s.
Tim opens his eyes slowly as he asks, “Does this mean I have to watch true crime with you?”
You smile and laugh, squeezing Tim’s hand. “Oh, yeah. Who else can tell me how accurate everything is?”

Fluffy Surprise
Author's Note: Not proofread and the first fic I've written in like six months so read if you dareeee
Summary: Reader decides to give Spencer a present when he returns to their new home.
Warnings: People with cat allergies, beware! (?) Fluff ofc.
Tumblr media
You moved into the new house two weeks ago.  Technically, you moved all your stuff into the new house two weeks ago. In boxes. Lots and lots of heavy boxes.
Spencer had come up with a system, labeling each box with the room it would go into at the new house. You had worked together to pack everything, label each box, and unload the boxes into your new home.
And it seemed like the moment he set the last box down and you were ready to start setting the place up, his phone rang.
Spencer had been gone for one week.
The case was halfway across the country, somewhere in Santa Fe. You couldn’t exactly be mad at him for being gone, but unpacking and trying to organize everything without his input was a nightmare. You were finishing the last box in your shared bedroom, carefully placing his clothes on wooden hangers and organizing them in the closet, when your phone rang.
Spencer’s name lit up the screen. You answered quickly.
“Hi, Spence,” you said, plopping down on the freshly made bed.
You could tell how tired he was from the long pause he took before responding. “Hey, honey. How’s the unpacking?” he asked with a small sigh.
You frowned to yourself, worried about how tired he sounded. “Oh, it’s alright. I’d like you to look through all the rooms when you get home, just to make sure everything is where it should be.” You let out a soft laugh, “I also had a hard time hanging up all the pictures and paintings without you, so we may have to straighten some of them up when you get back.”
Another pause followed, though this time you could envision him nodding to himself. “We can do that,” he said. “I’m sorry you had to do it all by yourself. I promise I’ll find a way to make it up to you.”
You rolled your eyes. “It was fine, Spencer. Besides, I’m pretty sure chasing a serial killer or something gives you an excuse.”
He sighed on the other end of the line. “That’s what I wanted to talk about. We caught the unsub this evening. I’m hoping to be home late this evening, but it probably won’t be until after you go to bed.”
You smiled, content with the thought of him coming home to your freshly decorated home. “Oh, I’ll be staying up. I want to see your reaction to the place.”
“Alright,” he said, clearly too tired to urge you to go to bed instead with a list of facts about the health benefits of a good night’s sleep.
You sighed. “As much as I'd love to stay and chat, I’ve got about fifteen more boxes to go.”
“I understand. I should probably get some work done, too. Files, reports, you know how it is,” his voice was barely a whisper now, the exhaustion beginning to get the better of him.
“Don’t work too hard, Spence,” you cautioned. “I’ll see you tomorrow night. I love you.”
“I won’t. I love you too,” he answered. The end of his line promptly went dead.
You looked around the bedroom, discarding your phone on the bed. You couldn’t help but wonder if there was something you could do to make Spencer’s return home a bit more special.
You sat up and leaned over, furrowing your brow and resting your head in the palm of your hand as you tried to think of things Spencer liked. Of course, Spencer liked a lot of things. He liked sweet coffee, puzzles, and a classic novel in some foreign language you couldn’t comprehend.
None of those things were overly special, in your mind. As you sat and wracked your brain, a thought finally came to you.
One month ago, walking by a local cat cafe, Spencer spotted the most beautiful calico. She had fluffy hair, one black ear, one orange. Her little paws were white and she was so well mannered. Spencer and yourself had gone in immediately and he had spent your time inside doting on the calico, whose name, you learned, was Calypso.
You bolted up from the bed and out into the living room, finding your purse sitting among the unpacked boxes. You shot out to the car, and without a second thought, drove the ten minutes to the cat cafe.
You said a silent prayer that the cat was still available as you pulled into a parking space across the street. As if on cue, you looked up to see the same cat lounging lazily in the window sill, green eyes poised on you.
The adoption process was quick, quicker than you anticipated. Fifty dollars later, you were on the road with Calypso in the passenger seat, sitting demurely in the carrier the shelter had provided you with to take her home in.
On the way home you had to stop at PetSmart to pick up a litter box, a few toys, and a scratching post with the hope that your new furry friend would not decimate your new furniture. Calypso remained in the carrier, watching quietly from the shopping cart as you agonized over which treats to get.
Soon enough, you were on your way home. The moment you walked through the front door, you set the carrier down and allowed Calypso to wander free. She was tentative at first, gently sniffing the floor and getting the feel for her new surroundings. However, after ten minutes, she perched herself on the kitchen counter, looking quite like the queen of her own castle.
You took this chance to open her new toys and scatter them about the house, as well as find a secluded corner for her litterbox.
For the rest of the day, the cat watched you unpack boxes. Beady green eyes noting your movements until you disappeared from her sight. Occasionally, if you left the room for too long, you would turn to find that she had followed you. In these moments, you would stop to offer her a gentle petting and giggle as she flopped down on the floor, furry belly up to the sky.
It was six hours after his phone call that Spencer arrived at home.
2:19 a.m. was the time on your watch when you heard the lock turn and rose to greet him at the door. Calypso, seated in the corner of the room on a side table, perked her ears up at the new noise coming from the entrance.
Spencer locked the door behind him and turned to face you, reaching out and pulling you in for a long hug.
You rubbed your hands up and down his back. “Are you happy to be home?” you asked, your voice muffled by his shoulder.
“You have no idea,” he said. He pulled away only to examine the living room. Spencer nodded in approval. “It looks really good in here. You did a great job.”
You smiled warmly, nerves settling in your stomach as you realized he’d not yet noticed the cat in the corner of the room, who was still watching him with suspicious eyes.
“Spencer, I have to tell you something,” you said, wanting to explain yourself for doing something as impulsive as adopting a cat while he was away.
His face suddenly became very serious. “What is it? Did something happen while I was gone? Are you alright?”
The questions came quickly and you shook your head to reassure him. “No, Spencer, it’s nothing bad. Here, come look.” You grabbed his hand and pulled him forward until the two of you were standing behind your couch in the middle of the living room.
“Look around,” you said.
Spencer’s tired eyes traversed the room. You watched as they landed on paintings, the television, the clock, and nearly everything but the cat who sat entirely still in the corner.
“I don’t understand,” he said, brow furrowed. “Did you make some major change I don’t know about? If you did, I’m sure that it’s f-”
At that moment Calypso jumped off the side table. The soft thump that accompanied her landing on the floor was enough to stop Spencer in his tracks. Finally, you watched as the feline caught his eye.
“You didn’t,” Spencer said, his voice barely above a whisper. His reaction wasn’t telling you much, and you were afraid that he was not pleased.
You started trying to explain yourself. “Well, I knew that you had a long week. I wanted to do something special. I know how much you enjoyed spending time with her at the cafe and now that we have the space I figured…”
You trailed off. In the time you had spoken, Calypso had crossed the room, climbed the couch, and began butting her head up against Spencer’s hand. Panic was setting in. Why wasn’t he reacting?
Just when you were about to push him to say something, you looked up to see a large grin plastered on his face. Spencer gently wrapped his arms around the cat and picked her up, holding her close and petting in between her ears.
“This is the most thoughtful present ever. I love her,” he said. His excitement reminded you of a little child and pulled at your heartstrings in a way that could have made you cry.
You sighed in relief. “I’m so glad.”
With Calypso still draped over one arm, Spencer reached out for you, pulling you to his side. He planted a soft kiss on the top of your head. “Thank you so much. I love her. I love you,” he said, smile still evident on his face.
“I love you too,” you said, turning to face Calypso, who looked all too content to be wrapped up in Spencer’s arms.
“I think she’s trying to steal my man,” you joked, nudging Spencer on the side.
Spencer laughed. “I don’t think you have to worry too much about that. My heart has room for two lovely ladies.”

Mad Season ❄ Story B
Warnings: non/dubcon, social anxiety, chronic illness, and other dark elements. My username actually says you never asked for any of this.
My warnings are not exhaustive but be aware this is a dark fic and may include potentially triggering topics. Please use your common sense when consuming content. I am not responsible for your decisions.
Character: this is Bucky’s side of the story.
Summary: a class project gets messy. (short!reader)
As usual, I would appreciate any and all feedback. I’m happy to once more go on this adventure with all of you! Thank you in advance for your comments and for reblogging ❤️
Tumblr media
“You get some good sleep,” Bucky says as he lingers behind you. You jingle your keys, nearly dropping them as you fish them from your bag. “I’ll be back for my jacket tomorrow.”
“Right, er, you can just take it now,” you turn back and he puts his hand up.
“Just in case, you hold onto it,” his lips curve slightly. “I told ya, I’m sweatin’ in this weather.”
“Oh, okay,” you hate to argue, especially after he’s been so nice. He even walked you off campus. “Uh, thanks... I... I feel better.”
“That’s good, doll. Didn’t even know you were upset? Something I should know about?” He wonders.
You shake your head. You don’t want to think about Peter, let alone mention him. “No, just... college stuff.”
“Ah, got a big assignment? Is that what you and the kid are working on?” He asks.
“Mhmm,” you glance away evasively. “Yeah, homework.”
“Didn’t do much school myself. Was an army brat. Hung around the base, did some smuggling, then I ended up babysitting the little twerp we now know as Captain America,” he scoffs. “Well, that was ages ago. I almost forget...” he shrugs then raises a hand and snaps his fingers, “oh, uh, not to be too forward, you want my number? For emergencies.”
You hesitate. It’s probably a good idea. He’s leaving his coat and you’re not sure how long your study group will take tomorrow.
“Um, okay,” you slip out your phone and shiver as you step back down the walk. “I’ll text you... number?”
He takes out his phone and crackles out a tiny laugh, “you know, I can remember my US Army number, can’t for the life of me keep this one in my head.” He taps and scrolls, “here we are.”
He reads out the numbers and you tap them in. You add him as a contact and open a conversation. You send him a smiley.
“Amazing. Now I can tell Steve I got a pretty girl’s number,” he chuckles. You look at him in surprise. He cringes, “woof, not as smooth as I used to be. Anyway, I’ll be around. Let me know when I can pick the coat up.”
“S-sure.” You agree.
“You have a good night, doll,” he stays where he is, planting his feet as he watches you expectantly.
You head up the walk and your keys tinkle once more as you unlock the door and push inward. You glance over your shoulder as he watches. He nods. It’s nice of him to make sure you’re safe. You give a wave then go inside.
You’re just happy to be back at your dorm.
❄
You wake up early despite the late night. You’ve never been very good at sleeping in. You get washed up, take your meds, and get dressed in a pair of wool tights and a cozy knit dress. As you go to leave, you stop short. Bucky’s fleece-lined leather hangs on the chair. You wonder what happened to your jacket.
The winds whistle outside your window. You don’t have any other coats, just the one. You shrug on the loose leather and zip it up. It smells a bit like cedar.
You get out the door early enough to buy a tea at the cafe on your way to the library. Your group for your lab is all there but one. You sit down but they hardly seem to notice. You don’t know how you’ll get anything done when they just stare blankly when you read out the instructions.
You muddle through. It’s awkward because they all seem to know each other but none of them are very nice to you. In the end, you’re stuck with most of the work and they’re talking about the movie theatre.
You pack up and they leave in pairs. You stand and grab the leather coat, hugging it under your arm as you check your phone. You’re going to check out a few shelves before you head off.
As you push in the chair with your hip, a message blips up in the top of the screen. Bucky. You don’t get to read his message before your name pulls your head up.
“Hey, been looking for you,” Peter says. “Got your coat...” He squints as his eyes fall to the coat over your arm. “That’s a bit big, isn’t it?”
“Oh, it’s... borrowed.”
“Borrowed? From who?”
“Doesn’t matter,” you say as your scalp tingles. “Thanks for bringing that back.”
You reach for your coat but he does the same and latches onto the leather. You try to tug both away. He yanks Bucky’s coat away and shakes it out. He snorts as he looks it up and down. His eyes snap up derisively and he throws it on the ground.
“How the hell did you get that?” He growls.
“I...”
“No, why the hell are you carrying around his coat? He’s an old fucking man.”
“Peter,” you bend to pick up the coat.
“I’m not stupid. His dumb pin is on it. No wonder you ran out last night. You act like I’m the one messing around and you’re sneaking around with Bucky Barnes?” He sneers.
“I wasn’t sneaking--” You lift the coat and hold it against yours. You back up as you pout at him. “Why are you yelling?”
“I told you I liked you and now you’re walking around in another guy’s coat. Why wouldn’t I?” He pauses and looks around, only then aware of his audience. “Oh, right, it’s a library.” He speaks louder as he throws his arms out, “guess I need to be quiet!”
You cringe and turn back to swipe up your bag. You keep your head down as your heart races and your breath begins to burn your chest. You turn back but can’t look at him. You keep a wide breadth as you step around him, bracing for him to do something.
He just snarls as you pass, “you’re such a baby.”
You hurry out, cheat thumping, head spinning, each step faster than the next. When at last you get to the first floor and burst out onto campus, your temples are pulsing. You struggle to untangle your bag from the coats and finally bury your hand deep inside. You take out your puffer but it slips from your frantic grasp.
It bounces across the pavement and you cough and wheeze. Before you can reach for it, someone else does. You look up at Bucky as he stands straight. He looks you up and down and holds it out, “whatsa matter, doll?”
You take it eagerly and suck on the end, puffing several times. He moves to block the wind as it whips around you. You finally steady yourself and hug the coats.
“N-nothing,” you utter, “here. I have your coat.”
He eyes you wearily as you pull his coat from under yours and hold it out. He takes it reluctantly as his mouth slants, “thanks. Where you off to?”
“Just... groceries,” you shiver as you open your coat.
“Groceries it is,” he says, “I’ll carry your bags.”
You’re too out of it to protest. You need to get out of there before Peter catches up to you. You’re embarrassed after the scene he made in the library and you don’t need another. You just nod and pull your sleeves up your arms.
“Thank you,” you murmur.

Day 9
Prompt: Voice Kink
Pairing: Copia/Reader
Tags: also pretty self explanatory
Notes: this one's pretty mild - just lovin' on copia after a show, with a little twist
“Spectacular as always, dear.” Copia gives you an appreciative nod as he crosses the threshold of the dressing room and flops himself down on the couch next to you, clearly exhausted. You’ll have to start getting packed up soon, but for now he deserves a moment to decompress.
“Grazie.” He cringes at the scratchiness in his voice, already so severe just minutes after taking his final bow. You perk up a little at the sound. It stirs something inside you can’t quite place. All you know is that you’re intrigued by it.
“Rest day tomorrow,” you point out. It’s actually a travel day, but what you really mean is the he won’t have to exert himself like he does on stage. That’s the closest thing he gets to a rest while on tour, anyway. Poor thing; being a rockstar is hard work.
Copia nods. You can see he’s looking over at the vanity, where a bag of lozenges is resting against a tumbler of water. He’s got an expectant look in his eyes, silently begging you to have mercy and not make him get up just yet. You oblige, rising to your feet to retrieve the provisions. If he wants them, however, he’ll have to humor you first.
“Are we stopping anywhere? Phantom’s obsessed with the idea of seeing the World’s Largest… Anything.” He just shrugs. Bruh. “Or we could cuddle up and watch a movie. Anything in particular you’ve been wanting to see?” You’re careful to ask an open-ended question this time.
“I will have to think about it.” You must be making some sort of face because he raises an eyebrow. “You are giving me the bedroom eyes, amore.”
“What?” You pump as much fake surprise as you can muster into it. “No. I’m just talking to my Papa.” Putting the pieces together, Copia laughs through his nose.
“This?” He asks, a hand coming to his throat. “Really? I need to be resting.” You give him a sly smile, kicking the ground a little. Your hand worms its way into the bag of lozenges, grabbing a small handful.
“I know, but…” You giggle. “I don’t know! It’s sexy. Like how you sound after we fuck all night.” You pause, grabbing the tumbler. “There’s another idea for tomorrow.” The memory of your last marathon, a last hurrah before months on the cramped tour bus, appears in your mind’s eye, setting off a pounding between your legs. Returning to the couch, you hand Copia his water, but elect to withhold the lozenges for now. He looks so tired, probably too tired for your games, but if he has one mortal weakness, it’s you. He takes a sip, letting his head fall back against the couch. With a relived groan he swallows, the life-giving water helping revive him just a little.
“You can turn even the most innocent conversation into something dirty, mia diavoletta.” He spies the medicinal candies still clasped in your hand and gives you a look. It’s not quite pleading, more of a firm request.
“It’s not my fault. You could read out of Leviticus and it would be hot right now.” Copia chuckles.
“Oh yeah?” The expression on his face says get a load of this. “Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head and honor the face of the old man, and fear thy God.” Sitting up, he reaches for your hand, hoping to snatch up the lozenges, but you’re too quick, whipping it behind your back.
“I’ll honor you all you want,” you say, kneeling between his parted legs. Your free hand finds his perfectly-sculpted thigh, giving the firm muscle a squeeze. Copia grunts, already half-hard. “Just keep talking.”

Tumblr media Tumblr media
jun sets his phone on the counter, leaving it face up as he goes to start making dinner. you’d been staying late at work the past couple days to finish a big project, and he hated seeing you come home so exhausted and worn out.
he sighs and turns the stove on with a click, setting a pot over the burner. the least he could do is have your favorite meal ready for you when you get home. he loves cooking for you, especially on nights when you’re much too tired to.
he’s so caught up in the recipe, making sure that everything will be perfect for you, that he doesn’t even notice how much time has passed until he hears your keys jingling in the front door and your soft footsteps coming into the kitchen. he turns around excitedly, waving at you as you walk towards him. “hi, sweetheart! i made dinner.”
you give him a tired smile, wrapping your arms around his stomach. “thank you, junnie. i appreciate it.”
he leans over to press a kiss to your forehead, grinning when you laugh a little. “of course.”
you kiss his cheek, then walk away to wash your hands in the bathroom while he dishes up the soup he made. he pours a generous amount into your favorite bowl, the red one with flowers on it, before setting it on the table at your spot and taking his own bowl to sit down at his spot while he waits for you.
you come back in and sit down, eagerly digging in. “this is delicious, junnie,” you say in between spoonfuls.
he smiles and reaches out to hold your hand. “i’m so glad! i put those new spices you got in it, i was afraid it might be too much.”
“no, it’s great. i needed something spicy.”
he giggles and takes a sip from his spoon. “so how was your day?”
“it was alright,” you shrug, wiping your napkin across your chin from where little bits of soup dripped. “we finished the project we were working on, though. i’m happy it’s finally done with.”
jun claps his hands. “yay! do you think you’ll get a break now?”
“probably not,” you laugh. ‘but i took tomorrow off anyway. i need a day to just sleep.”
“oh, that’s good!” jun grins. “we can sleep in for once! my boss told everybody not to come in tomorrow.”
you finish the rest of your dinner slowly, talking here and there about your day and laughing when jun gets soup all over his face when he bends down to slurp it from the bowl.
you stand up to wash your dish but jun waves you away, taking it from you instead and putting it in the dishwasher. “i’ll do the dishes later,” he says with a smile. “but now i wanna spend time with you.”
your cheeks warm but you let him have the bowl, giving him another kiss before heading upstairs to get ready for bed. too many nights you’ve come home and gone straight to bed, though jun always waits up for you because he likes going to sleep together. tonight you’ve got a little more energy than usual, still riding the high of finishing your work and having a well-deserved break.
by the time you’re done washing your face and putting on your pajamas, jun is already sitting on his side of the bed waiting for you, the soft glow of the lamp filling the room. you walk over and climb in next to him and when you nod he turns off the light, adjusting himself in next to you.
you lay on your side facing him, and you can still see him in the light of the streetlight shining in through the window.
“i missed you,” jun says with a smile. “i’m glad you’re home.”
“me too,” you sigh, relaxing into the mattress.
jun slips his arm around you, scooting a little bit closer to you. it’s quiet for a few seconds, and you frown, thinking he’s already wanting to sleep. you’re finally home with time off, and you don’t want to go to bed quite yet.
“‘m not that sleepy yet,” you whisper, and he tilts his head to look over at you. you reach out and gently run your fingers along his chest, feeling how soft and smooth his skin is beneath your fingertips. goosebumps prickle on your body as you think about all the times you’ve seen him like this, his bare chest sitting in front of you as he holds you.
“you wanna snuggle some more?” he asks, and his voice sounds so gentle that you don’t know how to tell him you aren’t really in the mood for cuddling.
“maybe… more than snuggling,” you answer shyly, resisting the urge to hide your face in the pillows in embarrassment.
a knowing look spreads across his features, and he rolls over to get closer to you. “oh, really? like what?” he teases. he knows exactly what you want, but he likes hearing it from you.
“want—you,” you sigh out as his hands slide down your side, squeezing your hip encouragingly.
“i’m right here, baby,” he giggles, and you swat at his arm. “all you have to do is tell me.”
"missed you," you start as your hands begin to explore his body. "missed… having you inside me."
jun moans, and the sound goes right through you as his hand slip beneath your shirt, running along your skin, touching you everywhere. "missed it too, baby. god, i missed all of you."
you sit up on your elbow so he can carefully slip your shirt up and over your head, letting it fall to the floor behind you. he rolls over as you fall onto your back and he shifts on top of you, slotting his leg between your thighs as his lips find yours.
you exhale against him, wrapping your arms around his neck to pull him closer to you as his kisses deepen.
he moves his mouth away from yours and begins kissing down your body, attaching his lips to your neck, your collarbones, your chest, anywhere he pleases. you giggle when he pushes his face into your boobs, feeling his smile against your skin.
he readjusts so that he's laying fully on you, balancing his weight on his elbows on either side of your body. he leans down to kiss you again, and you thread your fingers into his hair the way he likes.
you can feel him starting to grind against your thigh, growing harder the longer he kisses you. he reaches down in between your bodies to pull his cock out of his pajama shorts, pushing them down his long legs until they pool around his knees.
you moan when you feel him tap his cock against your abdomen, guiding it with his hand up and down through your folds, collecting your wetness.
"jun—" you whine out his name, tugging on his hair to tell him that he's taking too long. it's been too long since you've had soft, sleepy sex like this, and you're needier than you usually are.
he grins and kisses the side of your nose, resting his cheek against yours as he holds the tip of his cock at your entrance and begins pushing into you.
your breath catches in your throat, the stretch burning at first before it starts to melt into pleasure.
once he's fully sheathed inside you jun captures your lips with his, swallowing all your whines and little noises.
he stays still for a long time, even after you tapped his shoulder to let him know it's okay to move, but he just shakes his head and kisses you again. it's nice, so nice, just being with him again, and you won't complain even if he just wants to cockwarm with you for the rest of the night.
"just let me take care of you, baby," he coos, and you whimper at how soft yet gravelly his voice sounds.
you can hear both the sleepiness and the lust laced in his tone, and you clench around him involuntarily. his hips jerk a little, and you whine at the movement, feeling so perfectly full you don't know how it could get any better than this.
after a little while longer neither he nor you can stand it any more, and he shifts his weight so he can slowly start rutting into you.
you let out a sigh that you didn't realize you'd been holding in, and jun kisses your cheek again, brushing his nose against yours.
he slips his hand back down under the sheets to rub gentle circles around your clit, and you gasp and arch into him as his thrusts begin to pick up speed.
"does that feel good?" he asks, voice low, and you whine out a "yes". he grins, brushing your hair away from your face with his other hand. "my good girl, you needed this so bad, hm? needed me to take care of you."
"yes, jun—please," you rasp, gripping tighter onto his broad shoulders. "love you, love you so much."
he moans and his fingers speed up their languid pace, fucking himself into you more roughly but still just the right pace. "i love you too, baby. missed you always taking me so well, missed feeling you like this."
all you can do is stutter out his name, moaning a broken string of pleas and promises as you clench around him, feeling him bring you right up to the cusp of your orgasm.
he presses his lips to you, his teeth clacking with yours just a little from the way his body moves up and down, rocking into you and filling you up so perfectly.
he mumbles another "i love you" against your mouth, and with one more strong thrust you come undone around him, repeating his name over and over again. his hands caress your skin before stopping at your waist, giving him more leverage to fuck himself into you as you struggle through your orgasm.
it feels like a weight is lifted off your shoulders as you start to come down from your high, floating in pure bliss as the tension and stress melts away from your body.
“where do you want me, baby?” he pants, his hands tightening around your hips as his strokes become more and more erratic as he approaches his orgasm.
“on me— wherever,” you groan. though you always love it when he cums inside you, tonight you don’t have the energy for much clean up, so the easier the better.
jun seems to understand that, because just seconds later he pulls out of you and frantically jerks his cock over your stomach.
you reach up to hold his face with your hands, and he releases onto you with a whine as his high overtakes him.
gasping, he falls onto the bed next to you, his chest heaving a little with each breath. you let your eyes close, feeling your heart begin to slow down as you clasp your hands together over your chest.
the room is quiet for a minute before you feel jun shift off of the bed, the mattress dipping with his weight as he shuffles off to the bathroom.
you open your eyes and watch him walk back into the room, a washcloth in one hand and a t-shirt in the other.
he leans onto the bed, wiping the cloth over your stomach as you stare up at him.
"hi," you giggle, your head still fuzzy and pleasant from your orgasm.
he grins and bends down to kiss you. "hey."
he hands you the shirt as he leaves again to put the washcloth in the laundry, and you slip it on, forcing yourself to sit up despite how your body aches and begs for sleep.
but just how jun always waited up for you, you wait for him to come back, sliding back into bed and pulling you close into his side.
his arms wrap around you and you nestle your head into his chest, his skin still a little sweaty but you don't care. you're just glad to be home and glad to be back in his arms, cuddling after too many long days at work.
he tucks your hair behind your ear, gently patting the top of your head as you struggle to stay awake.
"goodnight. i love you, junnie," you yawn, closing your eyes again and resting your head against him.
the last thing you remember before you fall asleep is him saying, "goodnight, my love", as he pulls the covers up around your neck just the way you like them and kissing your forehead one last time.

in honour of us both going to uni tomorrow, i have a lil drabble request…fernando with a younger gf doing a degree 🫣 nando is my guilty pleasure ngl
EL ur a genius 🤍 my two fav things. also made her do a journalism degree because i’m doing a journalism degree so what
A WORLD AWAY. ❨ fernando alonso x reader ❩
“how’s your essay going?”
fernando’s soft spanish accent is muffled through the speaker of your phone, his face propped up on your desk next to your laptop. the glow of the screens and your newest candle illuminate your face in the top—right corner, hair scraped back and a large hoodie hanging on your shoulders. fernando still thinks you’re the most beautiful thing.
“not terrible,” you sigh, glancing at the word document that has laid untouched since your phone had rang thirty minutes ago. “need some more sources to fill it out a bit. i’ll probably have to stay up to finish it.”
“not too late,” fernando orders, brows raised. “you need your sleep.”
glancing at the clock, you mentally work out what time it is with him. he’d have only been up for a few hours, morning in singapore while it was night in london.
“yes sir,” you chuckle, sipping your lukewarm tea. “how do you feel for quali?”
the usual updates from your boyfriend pour in, and you know he could talk for hours about his job and the race. frankly, you’d let him. your degree was exhausting at the best of times, but you were in your final year now and with the deadline for your dissertation looming, the stress was piling on. fernando’s calls to rant about work or just dissect a race distracted you from your own responsibilities, even if it was just for a little while.
“go to sleep, mi amor. you look exhausted,” he sweetly worries, head titled adorably in the camera. “you can finish it tomorrow.”
“wanna talk to you, though,” you pout, already shutting your laptop and crawling under the covers of your bed. “i miss you.”
“i miss you too, cariño,” fernando murmurs. while the other wives and girlfriends jetted off to as many races as they could, your degree kept you far too busy to be able to visit fernando as much as you wanted to. you went to as many races as you could — but both of you felt the hardships of the distance.
“but you need to sleep. i’ll speak to you later, okay? i love you.”
“i love you too. goodnight.”
when you did get the chance to visit fernando at work, he was ecstatic. showing you off was his favourite thing to do, bragging about your academic achievements and whatever article you’d written most recently. it made a nice change to people asking, or not so subtly whispering, about the evident age gap.
you were almost twenty—four, fernando eighteen years your senior. it gained a lot of attention when you first went public, and still did two years into your relationship. you’d learned to deal with it, but you could always feel the eyes on you when you entered the paddock.
“don’t worry about them,” kika always told you, walking arm in arm to hospitality for a coffee. she had her own struggles, with her and pierre’s smaller, but still noticeable, age gap. “you love each other. that’s what matters.”
and, god, you did love fernando. watching him race, embedded in his element, he was easy to adore. when, every time he took him helmet off, he found your face in the crowd and sent you a wink.
“i’m so glad you could come,” your boyfriend mumbles in your ear when you hug him after the race, congratulating his impressive P5. it wasn’t podium, but you were proud no matter what. your chest seized as his words flew straight to your heart — you knew how much it meant to fernando to have someone there to support him, even with the tough facade he so often put on. you only wished you could be there more.
“a few more months and i’ll have graduated, then i’ll come to every race,” you tell him happily, lips squished where his hands press to each cheek. lingering forward, his soft lips fall on yours and kiss you adoringly. a thank you, everything he wasn’t very good at vocalising when he wanted to.
“i’m so proud of you,” fernando mumbles against your lips, hands heavy in your hair.
“i’m supposed to be the one telling you that.”
“i mean it, mi amor. you’ve been working so hard, and i know it’s not easy being with me. but i’m glad that you are,” fernando admits. your teeth find your bottom lip, willing it not to wobble as your eyes begin to sting with warmth. no matter what happened with the race, or your degree, or even the scandal of your relationship — you had each other.

Camp Wiegman-Part 24
Lucy Bronze x Ona Batlle
Tumblr media
Alternative Universe : Military School
Words : 5k
Masterlist
———————————————————————
Thursday, December 17th; 7:00 PM - Ona and Alexia's Room.
I collapse face down on my bed as soon as I step into my room. All I can think about is being on vacation. It’s about to become reality. To be honest, I’m struggling to grasp that starting tomorrow, I’ll be home for two whole weeks. It feels strange, but it’s definitely going to do me good. These last few weeks have been intense, and I really need a break. I have a splitting headache from all the constant studying. It feels like a hammer pounding in my head without rest. I just got back from Bronze after studying for my last exam, which is tomorrow. I’m relieved to see the end in sight because it was turning into a real disaster. The pressure and anxiety of not succeeding took over, and I started working more than I should have. I felt like the study sessions at Bronze weren’t enough anymore. I became obsessed, to the point of breaking curfew multiple times to study late into the night. The lack of sleep started affecting my behavior. I became unintentionally aggressive, which caught the attention of my supervisor. She noticed the bags under my eyes and figured out what was going on. Let’s just say she gave me a good scolding. Her decision was final, no matter what I said. She took all my study materials out of my room to control my workload. She almost punished me, but she held back when she saw my state. Our relationship has taken another step forward. I think she’s changed since she asked me to call her by her first name outside of school. She’s more open than before. Sometimes, I even call her Lucy when our study sessions run late, and she doesn’t mind. It’s become much more pleasant to spend time with her. She’s reached the point where she can tell what I’m thinking or feeling just by observing me. It’s very unsettling to be read like that. When she realized my problem with studying, she immediately found the right words to reassure me. Ever since she took my things on Friday night, she’s been coming by my room every evening to make sure I get back into a good sleep routine. Still, I’m mentally exhausted. All these exams were too much, and I’m starting to miss my family. I haven’t seen them in a month, hence my eagerness for the holidays.
“Are you done with your revisions at Bronze?”
Alexia snaps me out of my drowsiness. I must have dozed off without realizing it because I didn’t even hear her come in. I groan when she flops down on my back without any consideration. She kisses my cheek before resting her head on mine. Without knowing it, Alexia has started to break down my boundaries around physical contact.
“I came to get you for dinner. You’re coming, right? The others are already there.”
“Yeah,” I mumble into my pillow. “I’m starving. But I’m coming back here afterward.”
“Don’t worry, I was planning on coming back here too.”
“Come on, get off me!” I say, wriggling. “I’m starving!”
I laugh as she teases me by pressing down on me even harder. She finally gets up, but not before giving my butt a playful slap.
“Hey!” I exclaim, feigning indignation.
“Oops,” she says with an innocent look.
I smile and roll my eyes. Without her, I would have probably sunk into a deep depression. I was so angry with Lucy that first night she took my stuff that I was mad at the whole world. Alexia was there that night, and since then, she hasn’t let a single evening pass without making me laugh. She helped me think about other things, and that’s how I came to understand Lucy’s actions. To succeed, I also needed to learn to let go and have some fun. And that’s what I’ve been doing with Alexia. We’ve relaxed a lot, and she even took the opportunity to share new stories from her childhood. I took the chance to tell her about my relationship with Mapi as well. I had promised her a while ago that I would talk about it, so I did. Alexia is someone I really appreciate. She’s strong, and she has such a contagious joy. With those thoughts in mind, we head to the cafeteria in good spirits.
“Have you heard from Mapi these last few days?”
“Not really. She’s also busy studying. Why?”
“Just wondering.”
I don’t press further as we enter the cafeteria. We grab our trays and join our friends who are already seated. I greet the people I haven’t seen yet today. Since our day in the snow, our group sometimes expands at meals with the addition of girls who joined the snowball fight the other day. That’s the case tonight with Ella and Alessia joining us. They’ve taken the usual spots where Ale and I sit, but we don’t mind and take the seats opposite them. Over time, I’ve learned that Alessia is actually Leah’s sister. I figured it wasn’t a coincidence that I get along so well with her. Looking back, I realize they have quite similar personalities. They’re both very calm and thoughtful. Alessia once confided that she thought I had a crush on her sister. I quickly reassured her that we’re just good friends and that it would never go beyond that. I focus on the conversation going around the table. It’s about our upcoming vacation. Everyone is really excited. I get it; I feel the same way. I’m starting to get impatient for tomorrow. I can finally breathe and see my loved ones again.
“Do you already have plans for New Year’s, Ona?” Alba asks me.
“Not really. I guess I’ll spend it with Mapi, but we haven’t talked about it yet.”
“See, I told you she’d already have something planned,” his sister comments.
“Well, technically, nothing’s set yet. Why?”
They exchange a knowing look before Leah decides to speak up.
“To be honest, we usually spend it together here in Manchester. We were hoping you’d join us if you didn’t have any plans.”
“Really? Where do you do it?”
“It’s at our place,” Alessia explains. “We live here, and our parents usually go celebrate New Year’s with their friends.”
“I see. Is this the first time you’ve done this?” I ask curiously.
“No, this will be the third year we’ve done it together,” Ale responds. “It’s the only holiday we can all spend together, so we make the most of it.”
I nod, understanding perfectly. This idea excites me a lot. It would be so cool to finally be able to spend an evening with them outside of school. It’s definitely better than spending a drunken night at Mapi’s friend’s place. Still, I don’t want to leave Mapi behind. We’ve barely spent any time together since I’ve been here. Besides, we’ve always celebrated New Year’s together ever since we met. I know she’s expecting us to spend this one together too. We don’t even need to talk about it to know that.
“I would love to come, but I can’t leave Mapi alone,” I share.
“Why don’t you bring her along?” Alba suggests.
“That’s true, it’s a good idea,” Ale adds. “I really want to meet her after everything you’ve told me about her. Do you think she’d agree?”
“I see why you suddenly asked if I’d heard from her,” I say with an amused smile.
“Yes, well,” she rolls her eyes with a knowing smile. “I wanted to know if you’d already talked about it. Seriously, would it be possible? It’s a bit of a crazy plan, but doable, right?”
“I don’t know. It’s going to be complicated. She has a girlfriend, and I doubt she’d want to celebrate without her,” I grimace. “I’ll ask her and see what she says. Anyway, I want to come, but not without her.”
“She seems important to you,” Lotte comments.
“Well… yeah. She’s my best friend, you know. She’ll always come first.”
“See, I told you she’d say yes,” Patri laughs. “It’ll be awesome if you come. You’re part of the group now.”
I smile sincerely at her. It’s true that I’ve really integrated into their group by now. They’ve been very welcoming from the start, unlike me, who only did things my way. Now, it’s very different. A real friendship has formed between them and me. I was about to respond when someone taps me on the head with an object that echoes above me. I instinctively duck my head to avoid the attack, even though it doesn’t really help. When I try to turn around to see who it is, two large hands on my shoulders stop me.
“What has Mapi done now?”
I relax and lean back against Lucy, recognizing her voice. I expected to see her tonight before curfew.
“Nothing,” I giggle. “We were talking about New Year’s.”
“Oh. I thought you’d heard from her.”
“Briefly this morning, to talk about tomorrow. By the way, she sends her regards,” I say, lifting my head to finally see her.
“That’s nice of her.”
“Yeah. Did you want something specific?”
“I wanted to return the pen you left on my desk. It would be a shame to take your last exams without it, right?”
I smile as I take it back when she dangles it in front of my nose. What would I do without her? Probably not much. I can’t say it’s my lucky pen because I don’t believe in that sort of thing. However, I’m the kind of person who doesn’t like to change their habits once I’ve found something that works for me. That’s exactly how it is with this pen. I would have been frustrated to have to use another one for my last exam.
“Oh, thanks! You didn’t have to. Are you also returning my notes?”
“You need to stop taking advantage of my kindness. I’ll give them back tomorrow.”
“What kindness?” I laugh. “I’m old enough to manage my own sleep schedule.”
“No, you’re not. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have taken your notes.”
I sigh, crossing my arms. Well, I can’t complain too much. It’s true that she’s become nicer than before, even though she still treats me like a kid in some ways. It’s really frustrating, but I guess I’m partly to blame. She knows why she’s keeping my stuff. I would have been tempted to study tonight otherwise.
“Fine, I’ve recovered,” I protest.
“Ona,” she scolds. “I should make you run laps to tire you out tonight.”
“Actually, I think I’ll be fine,” I grimace.
“That’s what I thought. Everything will be fine, anyway. You’re ready.”
“Yeah,” I sigh. “If you say so.”
“I do say so,” she confirms. “Alright, I’ll come by your room before curfew.”
“Wait,” I quickly try to stop her.
“What? Hurry up, Engen is waiting for me.”
I turn to see that, indeed, she’s waiting at their table. I’m not used to sitting with my back to them. I like being able to see Lucy when we’re eating at the same time.
“Ona?” she calls out.
“Sorry… Um… Actually, I have a headache. I was wondering if you could bring me an aspirin or something?”
“Is it just a headache?” she frowns.
I smile when she instinctively places her hand on my forehead. Since my withdrawal and the flu, she worries about every little thing I might have. Well, it’s true that I’m still a bit fragile, but not to that extent.
“I just have a migraine. It’s probably from the studying.”
“And you dare ask me to give back your notes?”
“Oh, come on,” I say, feeling my cheeks flush slightly. “Can you bring me something then?”
“I’m not a walking pharmacy, but I’ll bring you something later.”
“Cool, thanks! And enjoy your meal.”
"Thanks, same to you."
She ruffles my hair before heading back to her table. I place my pen on the tray and watch it for a moment. My smile widens at the thought that she really knows me well.
"Well, you've got quite the bond," Patri chuckles.
"Hmm, if you say so," I shrug.
"It's true," Ella insists. "You're the only student she treats like that."
"We also spend a lot of time together," I shrug again.
"That's for sure," Ale laughs. "You're with her more often than with me!"
"Yeah, anyway, can we get back to the New Year's topic? If you want, we can call Mapi together later," I suggest.
"Oh yeah! That's a great idea, that way we can ask her directly!"
"That's exactly what I was thinking."
Even from a distance, my best friend manages to be loved. I'll keep to myself the fact that Mapi was jealous of Ale at first. She joked about it, but I know she was genuinely jealous. Still, I have no doubt they would get along. They're both so wild when they want to be, and it could cause some real chaos.
"By the way, how does Bronze know her?" Ale arches an eyebrow.
I freeze at her question. Damn, I hadn’t thought about that. You can’t really say they know each other. They’ve only talked once when I had a rough night. Otherwise, it often happens that Bronze comes to my room when I’m on the phone with her on the weekends. So, they greet each other, and sometimes they even tease each other (usually about me).
"Oh, well, you know, we often talk on the weekends, so Bronze hears me talking to her," I shrug.
"Hmm, hmm," she replies skeptically. "I must be missing out on some interesting stuff on the weekends."
"Not really," I laugh nervously.
Great, Ona. Very convincing. If she knew I often sneak out of school thanks to Bronze, I have no doubt she’d have something to say about it.
"Well, I’m done. I’m going back to the dorm. I can’t stand my headache anymore."
"Yep, I’ll join you soon."
I nod and wish everyone else a good evening before leaving the table. I clear my tray and then head out to face the cold. I hesitate for a moment to take the emergency exit to get there faster, but Bronze would kill me if she found out. So, I force myself to take the main entrance. I regret this choice when I hear the noise coming from the common room. Someone forgot to close the door. It makes me realize how disrespectful students can be. They struggle to understand they’re not alone. I escape the noise by going upstairs to avoid worsening my migraine. When I get to the room, I decide to shower immediately so Ale will have space when she returns. In the meantime, she comes back to tell me that she changed her mind under the influence of the others and is heading back down to the common room for a bit. At least I’ll have some time alone. Or so I thought until I come face to face with Bronze as I’m leaving the bathroom.
"You scared me!"
"Sorry, I was looking for you," she smiles softly.
"No problem..."
"Here, for your migraine."
"Oh, thanks... Wait, let me find a sweater first, I’m cold."
"You’re not getting sick again, are you? You’re trembling like a leaf."
"I don’t think so. I’m just cold," I say as I grab a sweater from the closet.
The shower had warmed me up, but the room is cold compared to the sauna I created in the bathroom. Let’s just say that shorts and a T-shirt aren’t enough in these circumstances.
"Your lack of sleep probably isn’t helping."
"Stop blaming everything on that. Don’t forget I’ve only lived in hot countries."
"Hmm..." she says skeptically.
"Anyway, I’m on vacation starting tomorrow at eleven. I’ll have two long weeks to sleep."
"That’s true."
I first put down my phone and computer before going over to her to take the pillbox and a small bottle of water she thoughtfully brought me. I quickly swallow a pill with a few sips of water.
"Can I keep them?"
"Only the bottle. You know the rules."
She smiles at me sympathetically. It’s clear that it’s not safe to leave a pillbox with a former addict.
"It’s not like I’m going to get high."
"You could be capable of it. Now, give me the box."
I don’t argue and hand it back to her before slipping under my blanket. Without asking her opinion, I turn on my computer. I squint, noticing that Lucy doesn’t seem to want to leave.
"Are you planning to stay here for a while?"
"No."
She grabs my desk chair and places it between the two beds before sitting down. I look at her skeptically.
"I’d like to talk about tomorrow."
I frown, not understanding where she’s going with this. She leans back in the chair and crosses her arms.
"For two things. First, how do you feel about the exam?"
I sigh and shake my head. She’s not going to let this go. I had a moment of panic, and now she’s back on my case.
"I’m not trying to bother you. I can tell you’re stressed, which is why I’m asking."
"Who wouldn’t be stressed in my position? I’m a little bit, I admit. But it’s not because of the exam. Well, the dice are cast since it’s the last one... I’m scared because I don’t know if I’ve passed or not."
She nods understandingly. I bite my lip and look down. I feel ridiculous for being so worried over something so minor.
"Hey. No matter the result, you can’t say you didn’t give it your best shot. Okay?" she asks, placing her hand on my leg to get my attention.
"A little bit, maybe. I should have worked harder from the start."
"You were lost back then, and now you have regrets. That’s completely normal, but don’t forget that since then, you’ve pulled yourself together. You’ve made the necessary effort to catch up, so let me tell you... You have nothing to blame yourself for, understand?"
I sigh, nodding slowly. She always has the right words, it’s incredible.
"I get it... I’ll try not to torture myself over it anymore. What’s the second thing?"
"Your return home."
"Lucy," I groan. "I’ll behave, I promise."
"I’m just asking you to be reasonable, OK? Don’t feel obligated to go to parties if you don’t want to, and if there’s any issue—"
"I’ll come talk to you, I promise," I finish for her.
"Good," she sighs. "It’s time for you to sleep."
"No, please. I’d like to call Mapi first. I have something to sort out."
"Alright," she concedes. "You have half an hour. Then you turn everything off."
"OK."
"And in case you’re wondering, I plan to stay here to make sure of it."
"You can’t be serious," I groan. "I don’t need a babysitter."
"You’ll have to deal with it. I want to make sure you sleep on time tonight."
"Who says I won’t have a private conversation with Mapi?"
"Is that the case?"
"Not particularly... The others suggested spending New Year’s here with Mapi. I wanted to ask her about it. It’s a good idea, right?"
"Hmm," she says unconvincingly.
"At least you won’t be far if there’s a problem," I tease.
"I’ll probably have something better to do than look after you during that evening, you know."
"True... I thought you’d be happy about it," I say, opening the FaceTime app. "I’m at least reassured that you won’t be far."
"If you’re reassured, it means you still don’t trust yourself. Anyway, it’s definitely better than a party full of strangers."
"It’s not the best, that’s for sure. I’ve never really liked those kinds of places anyway," I shrug.
"Then why do you go? To put on a show?" she laughs.
"I don’t know. To have fun, I guess. Isn’t that what everyone does when they go to those kinds of places?"
"I guess. I don’t know. I’ve always found those parties stupid."
"Is it just me, or does this topic seem to annoy you?"
"It doesn’t."
I lift my head from my screen to smile at her. It does annoy her for some reason. I know she won’t elaborate, but she could at least be honest.
"You don’t want me going to those kinds of parties, do you?"
"I’d prefer you didn’t, indeed," she admits.
"Alright, you win," I roll my eyes. "If I stay in Barcelona for New Year’s, it’ll be my last party. Is that okay?"
"Wasn’t that already the plan? You promised me you wouldn’t go to any more parties after what happened last time."
Thinking about it, I realize she’s right. I’m not supposed to go to any more parties. I bite my lip, wondering how she managed to get her way. She has such an influence on me that it’s becoming scary. However, with her recent reaction, I can’t tell if it’s because she wants what’s best for me or because she has particular issues with parties. Maybe it’s both.
"I still get New Year’s, though... right?"
She rolls her eyes with a small smile.
"I told you to just be reasonable. Isn’t that clear enough?"
"Thanks..." I exhale. "You scared me for a moment."
"Use these holidays to clear your head and stop thinking about school."
"That’ll be hard. I’ll miss your orders."
"Be glad to be away from my demands. I must be annoying to you," she says, making me laugh. "What’s so funny?" she frowns.
- "I don’t find you annoying. You're just straightforward, and I was serious when I said I'm going to miss you. No one cares about me like you do. By the way, I hope I can write to you during the holidays..."
- "We'll see if I reply," she teases me.
A ringtone interrupts our conversation. I frown as I see an incoming call from my best friend. I was about to call her, but it's surprising that she's calling since we weren’t supposed to talk tonight.
- "Excuse me. I have to take this."
- "Go ahead, you’ve got fifteen minutes left," she reminds me.
I nod, pressing the green button and bringing the phone to my ear. With my other hand, I close my laptop, which is now useless.
- "Hey Maps, I was just about to call you."
- "Hey bonita," she replies in a small voice.
- "Oh! What’s wrong?"
- "Nothing, I just wanted to hear your voice. I miss you."
- "Don’t lie to me. I know you."
- "There’s nothing wrong."
- "Okay... if you say so..."
I squint as I see Lucy smiling. I nod to silently ask her what’s going on. In response, she just smiles wider.
- "What?" I say at the same time Mapi sighs.
- "Huh?"
- "Sorry, I wasn’t talking to you," I say, which makes Lucy laugh.
- "Are you with someone?"
- "Yeah... with Bronze. She’s playing babysitter."
- "Oh, I’ll let you go then."
- "No!" I quickly respond. "It’s not like she can hear you. Tell me what’s wrong. I know something’s up. I can feel it."
There’s a moment of hesitation where she stays silent. She takes a long breath. This is starting to worry me. Lucy seems to understand the situation from the way she looks at me. I suddenly sit up straight when Mapi bursts into uncontrollable sobs. If she’s crying, then something is really wrong. The only other time I’ve seen her cry was when I told her it was over between us.
- "Hey, Maps... What’s going on?" I say softly, not wanting to upset her.
- "Ana," she says. "She dumped me, Ona... Ana dumped me," she repeats desperately.
I part my lips in surprise. I didn’t see that coming... I regret not being by her side right now. Her sobs get louder, and there’s nothing I can do to calm her down. I can’t believe they’re no longer together. I really thought their relationship would last based on how she talked about her. I never really knew how she felt after I left, but hearing her now, I don’t even want to know. I run my hand over my face, trying to keep my composure.
- "Maps, I- It’s going to be okay, alright? I’m coming home tomorrow. I’ll be in Barcelona around eleven PM. You can come with Hector, or you can wait for me at home, okay?"
- "I really thought she was the one, Ona. I finally managed to have a serious relationship again, and she dumped me like trash. Damn it!"
I close my eyes, hearing the loud noise she’s making on the other end. I don’t know what she’s doing, but it doesn’t sound good.
- "Mapi..."
- "What’s going on?" Lucy asks me.
I sigh, covering the phone’s microphone to explain the situation to her. Lucy asks for my phone. I hesitate for a moment before giving it to her.
- "Hey Mapi, it’s Bronze."
I hate myself for doing this, but Lucy is definitely better at handling these situations than I am. I tend to be clumsy with my words and never know what to say. Unlike me, Lucy knows how to handle things. She does it with me, and now she’s doing it with Mapi. She’s calming her anger and reassuring her. It feels like I’m listening to her talk to me when I need her support. Lucy’s words seem to have the desired effect because I can’t hear Mapi yelling from where I’m sitting anymore. She continues talking to her before handing the phone back to me.
- "She wants to talk to you."
I quickly take the phone where I can already hear my best friend calling me.
- "Yeah, it’s me," I reply.
It seems like her crisis has passed. She’s still sniffling a bit, but she’s not crying anymore.
- "I understand why you think she’s so great."
- "I never used those words," I chuckle lightly to ease the situation. "But you’re right."
- "You don’t have to say it. It’s obvious when you talk about her."
- "Let’s not talk about that now. Are you going to be okay?"
- "Hmm," she sighs. "I have to be. I have one of my most important exams tomorrow. I just needed to hear your voice... I’ll come to the airport tomorrow. I want to see you as soon as possible."
- "Alright. I’ll tell Hector to pick you up then."
I see Lucy tapping her watch. She gave me thirty minutes, and I guess they’ve passed.
- "Are you going to stay over?"
- "Of course, if you don’t mind. I think I’ll need your arms, if it’s not too much to ask."
- "Of course not. Go rest now. Bronze wants me to hang up."
- "Bossy, huh?" she giggles slightly, which reassures me about her state. "I thought curfew was at ten PM? It’s only quarter past nine where you are, right?"
- "It’s complicated. I’ll explain when I get back."
- "Don’t tell me you’re having insomnia again?" she questions. "I thought it was over since you hadn’t mentioned it."
- "I was, but not for the reasons you think."
- "Hmm..." she replies skeptically.
Now’s not the time to talk about my problems, especially not in front of Lucy. For now, she’s the one who needs reassurance. I don’t want her to start feeling sorry for herself like I did.
- "I’ll see you tomorrow. Sleep well, Maps."
- "Goodnight, Onita. Thank you, and thank your supervisor too."
- "I was planning to. Kiss."
I hang up and place my phone on the nightstand. As for my laptop, I put it on the floor, too lazy to get up and put it in the cupboard.
- "Thanks... I didn’t know how to handle that."
- "It’s no big deal."
I don’t have time to reply as the door opens, revealing Alexia. She’s no longer surprised by Lucy’s regular presence.
- "I’m back," she says before grabbing pajamas from her closet. "Are we calling Mapi again?"
- "I just talked to her on the phone. I didn’t have time to ask her about New Year’s."
- "You can chat tomorrow morning. It’s time to sleep now, Ona," Lucy announces to me.
- "I’ll go take my shower then," Ale says. "Goodnight."
- "Goodnight," I reply.
I lie down in bed, looking at Lucy. I think I’m hallucinating when she takes my laptop and phone.
- "Don’t tell me you’re taking those with you?"
- "Yes. I should have thought of this earlier. Have you used them this week?"
- "Of course not," I groan. "You’ve checked on me every day!"
- "Hmm. Come on, I was serious. It’s time to sleep."
- "Are you planning to stay?" I’m surprised.
- "Yes. I want to make sure you sleep."
- "That’s ridiculous," I mutter. "You’re getting too serious about this."
- "Go to sleep."
I roll my eyes and eventually turn my back to her, wrapping myself in the blanket. The good thing is that my headache has finally gone. The bad thing is that Lucy’s presence is unsettling, even when I close my eyes. Sleeping is impossible. Especially with all the noise I hear when Alexia comes back into the room. She seems to be trying not to make any noise, but it’s not enough. I want to complain, but Lucy beats me to it by asking Ale to go to bed. A few minutes later, the light goes out, plunging us all into darkness. I roll over to the other side now that it’s dark and I can’t see Lucy watching me. I know she’s still there; otherwise, I would have heard the sound of the chair. Time passes, and I can make out Alexia’s steady breathing. My mind is too agitated, and it’s starting to annoy me. I sigh heavily, admitting defeat.
- "I can’t sleep," I mutter, rubbing my eye.
- "And then you wonder why I’m still here," she jokes.
- "It’s not funny," I sigh, sitting up.
- "Stay in bed. Curfew has passed."
- "Am I allowed to go to the bathroom?"
She sighs but lets me go. I make sure not to take too long so she doesn’t get impatient. I wash my hands before returning to bed under her watchful eyes.
- "What are you going to do during your vacation?" I murmur.
- "Talking won’t help you fall asleep," she says, annoyed.
- "It might help."
- "No, it just distracts you. We’ll have plenty of time to talk when I take you home tomorrow."
- "You’re taking me to the airport?"
- "Yes, Ona."
- "Cool. I prefer it when it’s you."
- "Don’t get any ideas. It’s just because I’m leaving at the same time as you."
- "Hmm."
I smile even though she can’t see it. Even if it’s the truth, I don’t care about the reasons. I just focus on the fact that she’s the one taking me home, even though she doesn’t have to. I understand now why she wanted to handle my departure reservations. I thought it was to take the burden off me.
- "Thanks," I say.
- "Okay, that’s enough. You’re starting to annoy me by being so awake. If you talk again, I’m really going to make you run laps. Am I clear!?"
- "Oh, come on, calm down," I grumble. "I’ll sleep."
- "I hope so. Goodnight."
- "Goodnight..."
I smile as I finally turn my back to her. I try now to clear my head and pretend she’s not there. This last solution seems to work this time because I finally feel myself drifting off.

Rebuilding the Family aka Monthly visits Part 4
Tumblr media
Hey! Okay, I know I have been MIA for more than two months, BUT you have to be proud of me because I finished another part of Monthly visits AND started part 2 of Bruises Apologies and Cookies. This is Part 4 of Monthly visits I hope you enjoy. It's not proofread but I wanted to give y'all something. These are the previous Chapters: Monthly visits, Meeting the Family, The Aftermath
“Alexia?” Your hand dropped from the door knob to your side. You were definitely surprised to see her.
“Hi.” She greets you shyly, so timidly that you can’t recognize her voice. You cross your arms, waiting for her to continue. “Is it a bad time? Should I come some other time? I can totally come tomorrow, maybe at a more decent time. I should go-“
“Alexia, slow down. You are rambling. Do you want to come in? This is your house too, and you might miss Nala.” You offer her. She gave you a shy smile and entered her home.
“I missed it here. The hotel room sucked.” She says tiredly, yawning. You could see from her face that she hadn’t slept much. You figured that she has probably been on the plane or in an airport these past two days.
“How long have you been awake?” You ask her worriedly while she kneels on the floor, reuniting with her dog after so much.
She looks at her watch, which her father used to wear, “52 hours now.” She says, looking at you. “I missed you so much, Y/n. I’m really sorry about all of it. I know I have much explaining to do, and you probably have much, if not more, to say to me. But the last two days have been pretty intense. And I really need a hug, please.” She looks at you, nearly begging for it, with glassy eyes.
“Come here.” She puts down the little dog and almost runs towards you, putting her arms on your neck, trying to keep you as close as possible for at least a minute.
“I’m really sorry. Do you hate me now?”
You remove her from your embrace, cupping her face. “I could never hate you, okay? Now, we have many things to discuss, and you, woman, you have a lot of making up to do. And not the sex type, okay?” You whisper, not wanting to wake up the kids. She puts her hands on top of yours and nods, pulling your foreheads together.
Then you push her, maybe a little too harshly, making her look at you extremely confused. “And this is because you went MIA for two days after storming out of a match. Power move, by the way. But you made me extremely worried. I nearly booked a flight to New Zealand because of you.” You point your finger at her.
“My phone died just before I went to the airport. I’m sorry if I worried you.” She apologizes, looking at the floor.
“I’ll text your mom, sister, and our teammates that you are safe, here with me.” She nods, yawning again.
“Alexia, you should go to sleep. You are exhausted.”
“But we have to talk; I need to make it right. I need-“She pleads.
“No buts. Now you go to sleep; tomorrow, when you are more rested, we will talk about everything, okay?”
“Okay, I’ll go to the hotel down the street and call you tomorrow?” She asks, hopeful.
“Have you already booked the room?”
“What?”
“Have you already booked the room at the hotel?”
“No, I didn’t. Hopefully, they have a spare room for me.” She says, scratching her eyes, making you smile at her cuteness. You always loved it when she was tired. She was less composed and in control and more herself.
“Stay here.” You say earnestly. “I bet you miss your bed and old clothes; I just cleaned your favorite shirt, which you wear only on special occasions. Plus, this is your house, too. You shouldn’t sleep in a hotel.”
“Only if you are okay with it. And the kids, of course. How are they, by the way?”
“They are great; Ava misses you a lot.”
“Lucia?”
“She’s a little mad that you left me and didn’t say goodbye to them. She’s just very protective, but she’ll come around. We’ll talk more about it later. Now go to sleep, Ale.”
She goes up the stairs but stops midway, “Aren’t you coming?”
“Do you want some company while you get ready to bed?” You joke.
“Always.” She smiles, making you go into the bedroom with her. While she goes in the shower, you sit on the edge of the bed, texting everyone that Alexia is here with you and there is nothing to worry about.
As soon as she leaves the bathroom, you see her with half-dried hair, only with some shorts and her shirt on. She goes on the edge of her part of the bed and gets inside the sheets, making you turn your body to look at her.
“Goodnight Alexia.” You stand up, not knowing what to do; it was the second time you didn’t sleep on the same bed, the first time being when you stole the keys to the pitch.
“Wait, where are you sleeping?”
“On the couch with Nala.”
“But I thought-“
“I can’t sleep with you, Alexia; we need to discuss what happened with Vilda and us. I’m still mad and hurt. So tomorrow, the kids will probably be out all morning, so that is when we’ll talk if that’s what you want.”
“That’s all I want.”
“Then it’s settled. Goodnight.”
“Night.” You give her a last look, and then you go downstairs.
-
The following day, you wake up early with an ache from sleeping on the couch all over your body. The first thing you do is to silently check on Alexia; you find her still sleeping, hugging your pillow. You leave her a note saying that you will be going soon and coming back in approximately an hour.
You bring Ava to Nico, who offered to take Ava out after yesterday’s casual visit from Alexia so that you could talk properly with her. Meanwhile, Lucia would be going to the pitch again because she wanted to start the season with Barcelona B prepared and in shape. You admired her dedication, even though you told her it was unnecessary.
As soon as you got home, past 10 am, you found Alexia with a cup of coffee in her hand while she was scrolling through some news on her tablet; this felt very familiar, making you not know how to feel. This thought was soon interrupted by Nala, who ran to you, waiting for cuddles; this made Alexia turn around to you and smile.
“Good Morning.”
“Good Morning to you, too.” You picked up the dog and gave her some food, then went to the kitchen, putting the car keys on the countertop.
“If you want, there is some coffee left.” She informs you while you rummage through your cabinets, trying to find a mug.
“I really missed your coffee.” You say, looking at her, sitting down in front of her, “You can’t cook for shit, but you always know how to make great coffee.”
“I can cook!” She says, offended.
“We both know that you can cook only two dishes.” You chuckle.
“Okay, that’s true.” She agrees, chuckling, then turning the conversation into a very awkward silence.
Both of you hated confrontation, so this was going to be interesting. You knew that you had to talk, or else you could risk losing each other, which neither of you was looking forward to, but simultaneously, you didn’t want to have any uncomfortable conversations.
“Y/-“
“Alex-“You both say at the same time, stopping, trying to make the other speak. This was going to be complicated.
“You go.” You offer.
“Okay.” She takes a deep breath. “I just wanted to apologize for everything. I’m so sorry. What I did was shitty and cowardly.” She says, keeping her face as open as possible.
“You just did what you felt was right at that moment. I mean, the timing was a little bad. Really bad. But you did what you thought was right.”
“I realized something while I was away.”
“What?”
“I remember that some time ago, a really bad interviewer asked me who did I play for. Initially, I didn’t reply because I thought it was a weird question to ask, which completely discredits my career. But when I came home, I thought about it and realized I didn’t know. I know that when my dad died, I played for him and dedicated everything to him, and I still do. But somewhere along the way, I realized I don’t know anymore. Since I won the Ballon d’Or, everybody wanted to talk to me and wanted me to perform and play in a certain way. Still, after returning from my ACL, the expectations were even higher. How was I supposed to play freely when everybody wanted me to play another way? In all honesty, I was in some way jealous of you. You didn’t change, and if someone pressured you, you would tell them to fuck off or wouldn’t listen to them. What really grounded me was that I could come back home to you, and everything was normal and good. You gave me stability in my hectic life. And when we got the kids, I-“
“So now it’s the kids’ fault? Don’t blame it on them or me, okay?” You say a little defensively. “I gave you a choice and gave you an out many times, and you signed the fucking custody papers with me, so don’t tell me that you weren’t given any choice or some other excuse.” You cross your arms, waiting for her to speak up, while she sighs defeated.
“It’s not that, Y/n; I always wanted to have kids, you know that. I always knew that I wanted kids with you, and I don’t blame it on the kids or you. I only blame it on myself. Okay? I feel like shit; I swore to you that I would never leave you.”
“No, you don’t get it, you made me feel like I was back again with my parents, and they told me to fuck off and to never show up again and gave me no explanation. I felt like I did something wrong. I have been dying inside since you left me, trying to understand why. It felt like you took me for granted.” You say vulnerably, trying to keep your emotions at bay, something the person in front of you was failing.
“I’m so sorry. I’m so selfish. I-I didn’t think about that.” She says now, wiping her tears away from her eyes. You always hated it when she cried. “I’m such an idiot. I know I fucked up Y/n. I was trying to say that I realized that my family is the only people I have to care about and be accountable for my actions. And you are my family. You and the kids. And I’m really sorry that I haven’t figured it out sooner. But I’ll do whatever it takes to make you believe that and trust me again.”
“Took you long enough.” You chuckle wetly, her little speech making you emotional; nobody has ever told you that you were their family or part of one.
“Please tell me that is not too late.” She asks pleading.
“That is up to you.” You say earnestly. “My priority now is the kids. And I need you to show me that I will be one of your priorities and that I’m not taken for granted, and what you did won’t happen again because I don’t think I could survive that.”
“I’ll do anything. I’ll leave football if you want me to. You are too important and the only thing that matters.” She says desperately, but you could see that she wasn’t lying, and that was all that you needed to hear.
“Okay, maybe nothing that extreme. But you’ll have to make it up to me properly.” You give her a playful smirk. “You can start by taking me on a date. I want to be wooed and be given flowers. If you want me, you’ll have to start again from the beginning. Clean slate. And this doesn’t mean that everything is forgotten.”
She smiled shyly, nodding, but you could see she was happy you had given her a second chance. “Let’s see if you still have some game after nearly four years.” You tease her, winking.
“Oh, I definitely do.” She says confidently, making you shake your head in awe.
“Now, come here. I missed you, Amorcito.” You say not containing yourself anymore. You were glad that you managed to clear the air with Alexia. Even though you knew that it wouldn’t be like before, you were taking those steps in the right direction. “You made me worry so much during the match.” You say while she rounds the table and sits on your lap. You hug her sides and put your head on her chest. “Are you okay?”
“Yes, I am.” She kisses you on the top of your head, bringing you closer.
“Are you sure?” You whisper.
“Yes.”
“Can you tell me what happened?”
“Let’s get on the couch first.” She stands up, takes your hand, and leads you to the living room. She sat between your legs and began telling you what happened during the World Cup. How Jorge was always trying to blame the team if his ideas weren’t working, and how he would always target Alexia, making little comments about how since she broke her ACL, she wasn’t playing the same, and that if it weren’t for her popularity, he wouldn’t have even put her on the roster. To ‘punish’ her, he stripped her of her role as team captain, stating that her leadership wasn’t needed.
“I totally disagree with that,” you say, getting angrier as she continues talking.
“I didn’t know what to think anymore, and I started believing in what he was saying. We were underperforming, and for him, I was the one to blame, even though we were in eleven to play in a match.”
Then she explained to you what happened in the match against the USA. The morale in the squad was already low, and in all that, he began guilt-tripping the players.
“As soon as the final whistle blew, everyone was sad, but I felt relieved; I finally didn’t have to endure that anymore. I went to drink some water, and he snatched the bottle from me; I think he told me I didn’t deserve to drink because I disappointed the whole nation, and I laughed at his face. He grabbed my arm, and he began insulting me and telling me every little thing I did wrong. Then Ona and Aitana approached us and tried to understand what was happening. I didn’t want them to be involved or that Jorge would begin releasing his anger on them, so I tried to push them away, but they wouldn’t budge.”
“They tried to protect you.” You explain, stating the obvious.
“I know, but unintentionally, they made it worse. He started getting personal, telling me nobody cared about me and that if you cared about me, you would’ve been here. And that nobody gives a shit about me, if not for my status. I laughed at him and walked out.” She says without displaying any emotions whatsoever.
“He’s such an asshole. You don’t have to believe him a bit. You are a great player and a great person. Nobody should ever doubt that, okay?”
She nods, still with some uncertainty in her eyes. You take her face in your hands and make her look at you. “Okay?” You say emphatically.
“Okay.” She smiles at you, then sinks into your embrace, trying to find comfort.
“So, how are the kids?” You smile at her question and begin to tell her everything that happened. How they met some of your teammates, Mapi, and especially what Lucia had told everybody.
“And then she told Paños, Patri, and Claudia that I was a better mom this month than her real mother had been in sixteen years. And I don’t know Alexia, but I felt like what I did, what we did for them, was worth all of it, from the social workers to building a bedroom from our closet. I felt so happy. And you know, it gave me the hope that maybe I can be a good mom for them.” You say hopefully, feeling a little embarrassed. You hide your face in the crook of her neck.
“Of course, you are a great mom and don’t have to be ashamed. Carry it with pride.” She says to you proudly, caressing your cheek. “I hope that someday I could be that for them too.”
“You will. Kids love you.” You say earnestly. “Oh, and by the way, I think Lucia might have a secret boyfriend.”
“Wait, what?” She removes herself from your embrace and sits with her legs crossed on the couch before you, grinning curiously.
“She always goes to bed early, never wants me to train with her at the pitch, always hides her phone notifications from me, even though I never look at her phone screen, and she seems happier.”
“But how?”
“I genuinely don’t know. Or maybe she’s tired of me and doesn’t want me around for training. Those are the two options. I genuinely don’t know which one to hope for.” She chuckles.
“Oh, come on, it can’t be that bad. You were sixteen too once.”
“Oh, shut up; you know I didn’t do relationships when I was younger. If it’s actually true, though, I think I will have a mental breakdown.”
“You are so dramatic. By the way, I love this worried mom look that you have on right now.” She pokes your sides while you blush.
“You’ll have to deal with him.” You say, pointing your finger at her.
“Okay, I will, just for you.” She chuckles. “I really missed this. It’s good to be home.” She says seriously, taking your hands.
“Take me on a date first, woman!” You give a gentle slap to her hands and put them on your sides.
“I will. I will pull all of my tricks. Open the car door for you, get you flowers, and walk you to your door.”
“So cliché.” You roll your eyes.
“Don’t act as if you don’t like it.” She teases you.
You talked until it was time to get the girls home. It was good to finally have her back. You missed talking and laughing with her so much. You finally felt normal, full. And even though you both knew that there was still some making up to do and that it was best not to go back immediately to your old relationship, this start made you hopeful.
“Ale, I have to go now.” You say, smiling, while she tightens your embrace around your sides, not making you leave.
“No! I just have you back! I don’t want you to leave.” She says pouting.
“You are talking like you haven’t seen me in ten years.” You chuckle. “It has only been a month!”
“But it has been a very long month!” She says pouting.
“You have to go to your mom and sister; they were worried sick about you. And I have to pick up the kids.”
“Okay, but tomorrow I’ll pick you up for our date.”
“Oh wow, aren’t we confident?” “What if I am not available tomorrow? I might have something else to do.” You tease her.
“Like what?” She grins.
“I might have another date to go to. You know, I am a very highly wanted woman.” You joke.
She frowns, looking at you, crossing her arms. “No, you don’t! Right?” She asks you insecurely.
“No, I don’t.” You chuckle while standing up from the couch, wanting to get ready.
“When will I see the kids?” She asks shyly.
“Whenever you want to. But if it’s okay with you, I’d like to wait after our date.”
“I’m okay with whatever you want.”
“I have to go now.” You say, walking to her and stopping a meter away from her.
“So tomorrow?”
“I’ll let you know.” You give her a wink. “Goodbye Ale. You can go whenever you are ready. I’ll see you soon.”
When both the girls are in the car, you explain to them that Alexia will be back. She won’t live in the same house as you now, but she’ll still come around. Ava was thrilled to hear that; you knew she missed Ale a lot, whereas Lucia would scoff or roll her eyes whenever you talked about Alexia. You first noticed this at the beginning of the World Cup, and you didn’t know whether to confront her about it or ignore it.
After you told Mapi about everything with Alexia the next day, she offered to stay over to watch Ava, as Lucia didn’t need much to be taken care of.
It was 5pm, and you were a little nervous. She didn’t tell you where you would go, so you didn’t know how to dress or what to expect.Thankfully she sent you a text.
‘We are going somewhere to eat. I know that you are probably freaking out because you don’t know where we are going or how to dress. Dress comfy and casual. I know that you hate dressing up.’
You chuckled at the fact that she seemed to be reading your thoughts.
You decided to go for some shorts and a top, and in the meantime, while you waited, you went downstairs. You had the house all by yourself, which meant that you could do anything you wanted, with nobody judging, that is, working on the 1000-piece puzzle that you and the girls decided to start three days ago.
You were shit at puzzling. You knew that. The girls knew that. Everybody knew that. But stubborn as you are, you decided to prove everyone wrong.
Thank god that your attempt to puzzle was stopped by a car parking and your doorbell. You open the door and find Alexia with flowers hiding her smile.
“Hello.” She says shyly, giving you the flowers; you find her so adorable that you almost cannot keep yourself from kissing her. She gives you the flowers.
“Thank you.” You make her come inside your home and put them in a vase with water, not wanting to ruin them. “So where are we going?”
“Patience.” She chuckles at your excitement.
“Ugh. I hate surprises.”
“No, you love them, but you hate being at the center of the attention or not being in control.”
“Stop it. I hate that you know me too well.”
“After three years of relationship, it would be weird if I didn’t.”
You smile, agreeing, then ask her, “Do you want to take Nala?”
“It’s better if we don’t; we are going in an indoor place. We can leave her to my mom’s house.”
As you left your house, you went to Alexia’s car; she opened the door for you and closed it, then hopped in and began driving.
She had both hands on the steering wheel, which was something new, as she would always take your hand or put it on your thigh. She watched the road when you took her hand, making her snap out of her trance and look at you. You put both hands on your thigh, making her smile at your action, then resuming looking at the road. Her hand never left yours, and you got it back when the night ended.
As you saw the car turning right to a pub, you squealed happily. “No, you didn’t!”
“I did.” She replies, wearing a proud smile.
“We haven’t been here in so long!” You add, hugging her arm.
“I know! We should’ve come here more often. That is why I decided to bring you here. This place means so much to us.”
You remember going to this pub for the first time after your first date with Alexia. It was a beach day trip; you had brought food, playing cards, and books. It was a beautiful date; you loved going to the beach and going together made it a plus. What you didn’t expect was the rain. You had planned to stay there also for dinner, but the weather made other plans, so you both ran to your car laughing, and after a while of wandering around the streets, you found this pub. It was old and broke many hygiene standards, but you didn’t care. You were hungry and wanted a place to stay for when the rain would stop. What actually made you fall in love with the place wasn’t the fact that the owners were crazy as fuck or that there was a pool table available. It was their impromptu karaoke/stand-up comedy nights.
The first time you went there, there was this guy you didn’t even know the name of who would sing or tell jokes while nobody was listening. He was bad. Like really bad. He would sing the most complicated songs: Amy Winehouse, Beyoncé, Celine Dion, all of them. On your date with Alexia, as soon as you heard him sing for the first time, your hope for a nice, quiet evening was thrown away. His bad singing skills caught you so off guard that you nearly spit all your drink on Alexia, choking on your drink, throwing a fit of coughs, making you go to the bathroom. Thank god he didn’t see you.
As soon as you got back to the table, you both burst out laughing and decided to invent a story around his persona: he had a really weird 80s-style haircut, so you named him John Travolta, but since he was Spanish, his name was Juan Travolta. He was a very important accountant for many big companies but burnt out all his money on pony races and dog beauty contests. Leaving him with crushing debts, he decided to live off his wild passion: entertain others. After his fantastic performance of ‘My Heart Will Go On’, he began ‘the second part of the night’, as he claimed. Which was stand-up comedy/improv. For the few people in the pub, you and Alexia were the only ones listening, too curious not to do that. It was your second drink, and you found it hard to not stop yourself from laughing at the absurdity of all of it; while Alexia was giving you kicks under the table, trying to make you stop, it only made it worse.
Somehow, his comedy was even worse than his singing. He would try to make some jokes, but they never landed. Once, he even tried to memorize the monologue of a famous comedian, but that still didn’t do the trick. You figured he wasn’t cut out to be a comedian or a singer, but you appreciated his resilience and confidence. You wish that you had his confidence.
Since that first time at the pub, it had become yours and Alexia’s place. You would go there for date nights, when you wanted to have a laugh or when you wanted to be left alone. And even though the entertainment was shitty, the food was borderline poisonous, and the drinks were questionable, it had become a tradition for the both of you to go there whenever you went on a beach trip. It wasn’t the greatest place, but it was your place, and the memories you made there were ones you would cherish for the rest of your life. There, Alexia asked you to be her girlfriend, and you asked her to move in with you. It was a special place for your relationship with her, so Alexia knew what she did when she brought you there for your date.
“Wait. Do you know if Juan Travolta still performs here?” You grin excitedly.
“I guess we’ll find out.”
Alexia parks the car, and you don’t even wait for her to open the door for you, so you exit the car almost immediately. You quickly took her hand and dragged her inside. The place was exactly the same as it was the last time. Squicky floor, the same weird old owner behind the bar, and there he was. Juan. You smile excitedly, turning to Alexia, who rolls her eyes happily. Then you both sit at your usual table. You ordered some drinks and something to eat. While you waited for your order, you listened to Juan, who you thought was improving, shocking the both of you. Still, then he tried to make a high-pitched voice for a part of a song, and you realized that he was just as bad as you remembered him to be.
“I want him to sing at my wedding.” You say, clearly forgetting you were talking to the person you probably would marry.
“We are not making him perform at our wedding.” She says sternly.
“Our wedding?” You tease her, making her slightly blush.
“Yes, our wedding.” She says confidently.
“Where’s the ring, then?” You chuckle.
“Patience.” She remarks, making your heart flutter.
“If it’s not Juan, you would probably want Rosalia at our wedding; you are obsessed with her.”
“I am not.”
“Oh, you do. And what is more concerning is that she would probably say yes, she loves you.” You add. “But Juan Travolta, for me, is still my first choice.”
It was good to be back with Alexia; you hadn’t had a date night in so long, and you finally felt normal again with her by your side. There were just some people that whenever you are with them, it just feels right. Like they are a small part of you. And even when you want to be alone with your thoughts, you don’t care if they are there because they belong with you. And that person was for you, Alexia. And in the same place you were in that very moment, a year before you realized that she was the only one it was worth spending your life with, and after that, you continuously left a piece of your heart for her to encompass and make it hers.
As soon as you finished eating, you both decided to have a shot at the pool table. Juan had just finished singing and now told some really bad and pathetic jokes.
“So, are we placing any bets?” You grin competitively.
“We can do that if you want.” She says, rounding the pool table and putting all the balls in the triangle.
“If I win, which I will, I want you to make me coffee for two weeks.”
“I can bring you coffee every day, but if I win, which I will, you’ll have to give me a back massage.”
“I can be okay with that. You know that I’m low-key obsessed with your back and all of your tattoos. It won’t be a problem.”
“And dye your hair purple.” She chuckles.
“Oh hell nah.”
“So you are walking out on the bet?” She asks competitively.
“Never. You’ll just have to lose. Simple as that.”
The competition was on. The pool table was isolated from the rest of the pub, meaning you could cheat a little. Your plan was to distract Alexia. A very challenging plan. Your captain had a mind and focus of steel.
It was your turn now, and Alexia was wearing her usual cocky smirk that would infuriate you at how good-looking it was. Fortunately for you, you were able to make two balls enter the hole, but then you missed. It was Alexia’s turn now. You were down one ball, but not for long. You casually walked towards her and saw her bend on the pool table, trying to take aim. You took your chance. You put your hand on her lower back under her shirt, and then you lean in, whispering in her ear. “If I remember correctly, you always loved bending like this for me, but you always had fewer clothes on than now.” You smirk, leaving a kiss behind her ear.
“Y/n.” She cautioned you reprimanding.
“What? I am just stating a fact. Come on, do your shot.” You smirk, leaving her a little flustered. She takes in a deep breath, but then you put your hand on her side, slowly going down. She took aim again, but she missed the shot, making you give her a mischievous smirk. Both of your competitive natures were about to arise, and that meant that Alexia would be playing dirty, too.
“I thought you had a nerve of steel, capitana.” You remark, making her look at you slightly annoyed.
“You started something, Y/n; I’m going to end it.”
It was your turn now, and you were hoping that Alexia wouldn’t be doing something that would make you not focus. You were ready to take aim when she basically put her whole front to your back, putting her hands inside your t-shirt and slowly massaging right under your breasts, “You are wearing this little top; that is making me crazy. So much skin to touch, I don’t know where to put my hands.”
She whispers, making your brain completely numb and very hazy. She smirked at your reaction, then quickly moved away from you, leaning on the pool table to your left, “Now, come on. Do your shot.” She repeats the same thing that you said before. You take a deep breath and close your eyes, trying to take her out of your mind, but it is too late; the 8 ball goes in, and you lose the game. She wins.
“Fuck.” She chuckles, making a little bow and making you roll your eyes.
“You’ll get ’em next time.” She teases.
“I can’t even say that you cheated because I did it before you.” You hunch your back, defeated. “So purple?” you add.
“Yep. And a back massage.”
“No coffee?”
“Since I am a wonderful person and I am the bigger person, I can still bring you coffee. I would hate to see you sad that you lost your bet.” She says, trying to conceal a smile, “You poor loser.” She says while caressing your head, giving you some comfort. You slap her hand away from you, “I might be a sore loser, but you, Alexia Putellas, you are an asshole.”
“Well, this asshole is better than you at pool.”
“I want a rematch.”
“Maybe next time. It’s getting late.” The night was going so well that you totally forgot about the time. It was 10pm, and you promised Ava to be there for bedtime.
-
So you quickly exited the pub and went in the car. Without hesitation, Alexia put her hand on your thigh and drove. In the car, you began reminiscing about the places you went together and gossiped about your neighbors.
As soon as you got home, she walked you to the door and waited hesitatingly. “So you want to come in to say hi to the kids? They’ll love to see you.” You offer.
“Are you sure?” She smiles, hoping for a positive response.
“Come inside.” You take her by the hand and go inside your house with her. In the living room, you saw Mapi exhausted on the couch while Ava was sleeping with her head on her lap, and Lucia was nowhere to be found.
As soon as you went inside the living room, Mapi turned to see you, then she gently moved Ava and went to greet you. You went into the kitchen to not make noise. There, Mapi slaps Alexia on the shoulder, making her recoil.
“What was this for?” She whispers, annoyed.
Your best friend points the finger at her. “This. It’s for going MIA for two days without saying anything AND leaving Y/n. What were you thinking?” She pushes Alexia’s head with her fingers.
“Maria.” You look at her sternly.
“I’m sorry, Mapi, for everything. I was in a really weird place mentally, but now I’m good.” You could see that she was a little more convinced. “Can I have a hug? I haven’t seen you in a while now!” The two friends hugged and then began to catch up. After a while, your friend said goodbye and left, not without thanking her for what she did.
“I’m taking Ava to bed. Do you want to come with me?”
She slowly nods at your offer, and you both go to your living room. Lucia was still outside, which made you and Alexia share puzzled looks with each other.
You wake up Ava and tell her it’s time to bed. She slowly opened her eyelids and looked around, blinking twice when she saw Alexia.
“Alexia!” She says excitedly, still very sleepy.
“Hi, mi nena, let’s go to bed, it’s very late.” She says, smiling, caressing her cheek. She makes grabby hands for the older woman to pick her up, which she gladly does, always wearing her biggest smile; she probably missed the girls very much.
She picks her up and takes her to her bed. She then tucks the bed sheets, and you hear them converse.
“Go to sleep, Ava.” She says, looking at her like she is the world’s most precious thing.
“Will you come tomorrow?”
“Yes, I will. I’ll come whenever you want me to. Now go to sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Good night.”
“Good night.”
She exits her room and closes it, walking towards you.
“She really missed you.” You say to her while she hugs you on the side.
“I missed her too. But where is the other one? Is she still on the phone?”
“No, she just ended it; I’ll go to her.” You go outside, and you call out her name.
“Lucia?” You ask while she is still looking at her phone.
She jumps at your voice, nearly throwing her phone.
“Oh hey, Y/n!” She says as if she were caught red-handed.
“Do you want to come in inside? It’s getting cold.” You offer her.
“Okay.” She comes inside, gives an awkward wave at Alexia, and then goes to her room, saying goodnight to you before closing the door.
You turn around to Alexia, “She is definitely hiding something.”
“So for tomorrow.” She had her hands behind her back. She had this cute little habit when she was shying away from asking permission for something. You took her hands from behind her back and laced them with yours.
“Why are you getting so shy all of a sudden?” You chuckle, making her blush.
“I told Ava that I would be coming over tomorrow morning because she wouldn’t sleep if not. So, I was trying to ask you if I could come over?”
“Of course you can. You have to make me coffee.” You remark as if it was the most obvious thing.
“Then I should get going.” She says awkwardly, clearly not wanting to leave.
“You can always stay over for the night.” You push her more towards you, leaving only a few centimeters. “I really enjoyed the date. We went to our place, we played pool, and tomorrow morning, you have to be here, so why not?” You offer. She begins giving you kisses all over your face, minus the lips, on the cheeks, forehead, chin, and jawline. You really missed her kisses.
“No.” She looks at you, making you give her a puzzled look. “I want to do things the right way, and I don’t want to rush anything.” She gives you a kiss on the nose. “Plus, on a first date, you never ask someone to stay the night!” Making you chuckle. “You wait at least for the third date. On the first date, you only ask for one thing…”
You knew where this was going; she was going to ask you for a kiss. “What do you ask for?”
“For a kiss.” She states, getting all shy again. Then, her gaze softens, and her voice becomes serious. “Can I kiss you?”
“Yes, you can.” You take your hands and put them on her neck, slightly playing with the hair on the back of her head, while she takes your sides and gently leans in for a peck.
“Just that?” You chuckle. “You have to give me more than that. I haven’t kissed you in more than a month.”
Without asking twice, she pulls you closer to her for a more passionate kiss that takes your breath away. It was needy, and it was full of passion. You both haven’t kissed each other in so long, and the constant teasing of the whole night made the both of you react in a desperate way for each other. You were slowly going forward in your new relationship with each other, but that didn’t mean you didn’t miss the small or big actions one did with the other’s body. You knew each other’s body perfectly, and frankly, you missed how much perfectly her lips would encapsulate yours or how she knew how much to push or how much you needed from her.
She pushes you to the wall and slowly traces her tongue on your lips, asking you for permission. You absolutely granted her that. Your mind was hazy, and you weren’t functioning properly. The both of you forgot that you were in a freaking house with kids that could walk in on you at any moment, but you didn’t care; you finally had your girl back. Both hands were roaming everywhere, clearly not containing your excitement. You always loved it when Alexia took control, and after a month of not feeling her body, hands, and lips on you, it made it all worse. After a period of time that was not enough for you, she put her forehead on yours, with the both of you panting for air.
She then begins giving you small pecks on the lips, “I.” Another peck, “Missed.” Another one. “This.” And finally, placing the last kiss on your lips, lingering a little.
“Wait, sorry. What did you miss? I didn’t quite understand. Can you show me again?” You tease her. She turns you around and then brings you even closer, lifting you in the air and kissing you again.
She then puts you on the ground and looks at you, giving you the smile that was only reserved for you. The real one showed all 32 teeth, but what made it special were her eyes. Whenever she smiled like that, her eyes would narrow, and her whole face would light up.
“I love you.” Before you can reply, she gives you another peck. “I’ll see you tomorrow. Good night, mi amor.” And before you could reply to anything, she left the house, leaving you frozen in the spot. After two good minutes to compose yourself, you go upstairs to get ready for bed.
You were reading some book to get yourself tired and ready to sleep when you heard your phone buzz.
‘I just got home :)’
‘I really had fun today. I’m so glad you had given me a second chance.’
‘I’m glad too. But maybe next time, don’t run away like that.’
‘I won’t, I promise. Good night’
‘Goodnight.’
You put your phone away and go to sleep.
-
The next day was the last day before you, Alexia and Lucia would begin preseason. You were excited, but at the same time, you were a little worried about leaving Ava and sometimes Lucia for work. You hoped that when school for them would start, everything would get easier from there. It was 8 am, and as you got downstairs in your kitchen, you began your morning routine. Scroll through some news and wait for the kids to wake up. As you scroll on your phone, you receive a text from Alexia saying that she will be arriving soon.
You had to go to the hospital with Ava for some check-ups, and you were really worried. With all your experience with hospitals with Nico, you always hated going inside there for check-ups, especially when one of your loved ones was involved. So you really hoped that the visit would go well. And even though every month, you spent at least three hours in a hospital trying to cheer up children who went through the same condition that your little brother had, you felt that on this occasion, it was different. This time, you went with your child, giving you a different type of fear.
As soon as Alexia arrived, you and the girls had breakfast together; needless to say, it was very awkward. Lucia was still annoyed with Alexia; Ava was really tired because you had to wake her up early. And you were already worried about going back to the hospital, so you were deep in your thoughts, continuously zoning out.
When Alexia noticed it, she put a hand on your thigh to give you some type of comfort; you both shared a look that made you understand how each other was feeling. This is what you loved and missed about your relationship with her, the way that you understood each other in every way, almost as if you both could read each other’s mind.
As soon as you finished breakfast, the girls went to their rooms to get ready, which left you and Alexia alone to do the dishes. You were cleaning them while she was drying the mugs. You were weirdly silent and clearly in your head.
“Y/n, are you okay?”
Alexia’s voice made you snap out of the trance. “Yeah, yeah, I’m okay. It’s just, today Ava has a visit with the oncologist, and I’m-“
“You are worried.” She finishes the sentence for you to understand how you are feeling.
“You already know that I hate going to the hospital for any medical reason, especially for people I care about. And I know that this is just a formality, but still, it’s making me have flashbacks of Nico.” You say in one breath.
“You don’t have to justify your feelings with me, okay?” She says, turning her head to you and giving you an earnest smile. You slowly nod, and then you finish up cleaning. “Do you want me to come with you?” She says while hugging you from behind, leaving some small kisses on your shoulders, trying to give you some comfort.
“You don’t have to. You might have some other stuff to do.” You say, turning your body around to face her.
“My family is more important.” She gives you a small peck on the lips, making your stomach flip.
“Do you love our little family so much that you would be willing to drive us?” You ask tentatively, with the both of you knowing how much you hated driving.
She chuckles, rolling her eyes. “Okay, I will.”
“So, what are your plans for the day?” You ask Alexia while she is driving you and the girls to the hospital.
“So you know, what happened at the World Cup?”
You nod.
“Well, my agent wants me to release a video or write a note explaining what happened.”
“Do you already know what you are going to say?”
“I’m retiring from the national team.”
“Wait. Really?” You weren’t that shocked at the news; after what happened with Jorge, you knew that Alexia wouldn’t have returned to play if he was the coach.
“Yeah, and it’s not going to be only me.”
“Who else?”
“For now, Ona and Aitana, they are waiting for me to break the news. But many others will retire, too. I’ll tell you everything later in the afternoon when you’ll dye your hair.” She sends you a wink.
This made both girls turn to look at you.
“Are you dyeing your hair?” Lucia asks.
“I made a stupid bet with Alexia, and I lost it, so I have to dye my hair purple. She’s going to dye it for me, as I hate going to the hairdresser.” You cross your arms while the two young girls chuckle.
“Can I help? Can I help?” Ava asks excitedly.
“You know what? I don’t care anymore. Do whatever you want with my hair.” You say exasperated.
“Stop being so dramatic,” Alexia says, clearly mocking you.
“I’m not being dramatic.” You pout.
“Yes, you are being dramatic.” Lucia interjects, saying the first words since she got in the car.
“If it turns out bad, I’ll blame it on the three of you.”
-
As you got inside the hospital, you went into the oncology department, where basically everybody knew you from all the visits that you did in the past years with the other players; what they didn’t know was that you had in custody the two girls, making all the nurses from the floor give you a questioning look.
You sensed that Lucia was worried, too, so you nudged Alexia to go with Ava, leaving you with the older sister.
You put your arm on her shoulder and give her a kiss on the temple. “Everything is going to be okay. You have to be strong for her.”
“How do you do it?”
“What?”
“You are not worried. How do you do it?”
“Oh, believe me, I’m super worried, even though it’s just a check-up. I just try to cope with it.”
“How?”
“It’s not very healthy, so you probably shouldn’t do it.” She looks at you blankly. “Just whenever it gets too much, come and talk to me or to anyone. Don’t keep everything in. You are going to explode, believe me.”
She slowly nods and then thanks you. “And now that I have you for the first time alone, stop doing that thing with Alexia, please.”
“What thing?” She asks dumbly.
“Giving her the death stare, or not talking to her, or refusing to sit next to her.”
“I would never do such a thing!” She says defensively, even though you both knew that it wasn’t the case.
“Lucia.” You reprimanded her.
“Okay, she left you, us, without saying a word; you have basically forgiven her right away. I can’t let her just walk into Ava’s life again as if nothing happened. Maybe she’ll leave again, and Ava will be crushed, and I can’t let that happen.”
“Listen, I know that you are hurt, and you are kind of right from a point of view. But you don’t know the whole story. And I have known Alexia for nearly ten years now, and I know for a fact that she won’t abandon her family.”
“But she did.”
“As I told you before, you don’t know the whole story, and frankly, I don’t think you should because it is something between me and her. What I ask you is to give her a second chance. She deserves it. Will you try? Please.”
She nods.
As soon as you get to the waiting room, Lucia reminds you that Ava just changed doctors because her previous doctor had just retired. You hoped that her new doctor would be just as good as her other one.
What you didn’t expect is for you to know her.
As soon as the doctor’s office door opens, you almost immediately recognize her voice, soon after you recognize her.
“Y/n?” She asks, shocked.
“Oh my god! It’s you, then.” You walk to her and hug her.
Making the three other girls confused; you then turn to them and explain. “This is Emma; we were friends a long time ago.” You say happily.
“So, who are those people!” She asks you while resting her arm on your shoulder. She has always been very touchy.
“Well, this is Ava and Lucia; you have a visit with the little one, I guess. And this is-“
“Alexia.” Your girlfriend? You didn’t know what to call her. Walks up to her and shakes her hand.
“Are they yours?” She asks.
“We recently gained custody of them.”
“Oh wow!” She jokes. Then she kneels next to Ava, who was sitting down next to her big sister, “So you must be Ava. I’m Doctor Emma Fernandez. But you can call me Doctor Em.” Then she turns to you. So I know that you are in four, but only one of you can come with her.” You turn to look at Lucia, and you can see her distressed face turn into a defeated look. You knew that she wanted to be there, present for her sister, as protecting her was all she had ever known.
“Can you make an exception? I’m legally her guardian, but I’d rather have her sister come too, just to ease some nervousness.” You try to give her one of your most convincing smiles in the hopes that she will agree to your proposal.
She first looks at you, then the girls, and in the end, Alexia, then back to you. “Okay. Only because it’s her first visit.” She turns around to her office and lets you all in.
Thankfully, the visit went well, and you all returned home happy and grateful. Back home, the girl was minding their own business while you and Alexia were in the kitchen, figuring out her post on the national team.
-
You were sitting on the countertop while Alexia was sitting down on your left, very much focused, writing something on her iPad.
“So, do you know exactly what you are going to say?” Caressing her cheek, trying to make her divert her attention to you, she gives you a smile, leaning in the contact.
“I need to be cautious because I really don’t want to fall into any miscommunication or accidentally blame someone who’s not involved.”
“I really do believe that if you and some other big names put out a statement, things will change. But I know that you are in a very different position than I was when we sent that email. So whatever it happens, I understand, and I will support you.”
She turns her iPad towards you, “Read it.” She hands it to you, and you read what she wrote. It was a short note saying that she would be retiring from the national team because of some issues faced by the federation that put winning and pride over the well-being of the players. And then she added that what happened after the match against the USA with the coach was something inexcusable and unacceptable.
“I know that is very similar to what you said in the letter, so if you want me to change it, I’ll do it.” She says while you are still reading everything.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s similar if you tell the truth. For me, it’s perfect and very ballsy. If you want to post it, I’ll support you. But that’s my opinion. If you want a more objective opinion, I think you should ask Jenni or maybe Aitana to give you their opinion.”
“I already send it to them. I’ll probably post it tomorrow after I call my agent. What about you? I thought your agent told you to clarify about the kids thing.”
“Yeah, he did.”
“Have you been ignoring the problem?” She asks, already knowing the answer.
“Yep. I was about to make a post, but then I didn’t.”
“Why?”
“Because it didn’t feel right to do it at that moment.” She looks at you, puzzled, “It didn’t feel right because you weren’t there. I was about to do it when you were at the World Cup, and we broke up and were on a break or whatever that was.” She turns her head to the ground, sadly, still a little ashamed and guilty of breaking up with you. “And it didn’t feel right to post about my family when a huge part of it was missing. I was hoping you’d come back to me. And I’m so glad you did.”
She looks at you shyly. “Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“So you want to go public?” She smirks at you.
“I mean, we can, If you want that too. Maybe not now, but when things start to settle, we can. Again, if you want to, of course.”
-
As the night progressed, you were dreading the moment in which the girls would dye your hair. It’s not the fact that you didn’t want to dye your hair; what you hated about this was the fact that you would probably have to sit still for at least an hour, fully knowing that you couldn’t move in fear of ruining your clothes, but unfortunately, a bet is a bet and knowing that the girls would be doing that and that you would be having some family time, would make it worth it.
This left you sitting on a chair in your bedroom, with your head in your hands, while Alexia was trying to dye your hair, and the two girls were fighting for the music to play. After a while of convincing, they opted for a random playlist while Ava turned excitedly to Alexia, asking if she could do it. You genuinely didn’t know why she was that excited, but you didn’t care.
In the end, it didn’t look that bad
-.
It was mid-August, so this was your last day before you went in preseason, and Lucia would be joining La Masia. Since she lived in Barcelona, she would stay there 5 days a week and return home on the weekends. So you finished the night by helping her pack up, making you, in the process, a little emotional.
It was 11 pm, and the girls just went to bed. Which left you and Alexia in the living room. You knew that it was late and you had to go to sleep, but both of you had training the following day, early in the morning. But neither of you wanted to leave.
“I should leave-“
“Do you want to come upstairs?” You both ask at the same time.
You both chuckle. “Are you sure?” She asks you.
“Yes, I’m sure.” You smile, taking her hand and leading her to your bedroom. As you both lay down on your bed, she turns to you, “So, are we back together?” She smiles shyly.
“Are you asking me again to be your girlfriend?” You tease while putting yourself on top of her.
“Yes, I am.” She replies confidently, moving her hands to your waist.
“So ask me.”
“Will you be my girlfriend once again, Y/n?” She grins excitedly in anticipation.
“Yes, I will.” You push yourself down to give her a small peck on the lips.
“I love you so much.”
“I love you so much, too.” You reply; while she looks at you in a way you always found so cute, you smile dumbly at her.
“What?”
“Oh, just fuck it.” You say as you crash your lips into hers, making her react immediately by lifting herself off the mattress, sitting right up, with you entirely on top of her with both of your fronts touching and ending the night with more than just kissing.
The next day, preseason had started, thus also starting the 23-24 season, one of the busiest and wholesome years of your life.

The Past 💛 Atlas
Tumblr media
I feel Asher’s hand slide to the back of my head, lightly gripping my hair and holding me close as I kiss down his neck. His touch, his smell, and the sound of his breath in my ear, consumes my senses.
Tumblr media
Without realizing it, I find myself clinging to him, “I’ve missed you so much.” The words come from a place so deep inside me that it takes a moment before I register that they came out of my mouth.
Tumblr media
My heart jumps as though someone has snuck up on us, invading our moment. I pull away, tempted to look around for the offending stranger but knowing somehow, it’s me, “I’m sorry. I- I don’t know why I said that.” My mind scrambles to come up with something, anything that would make sense. “I think I’ve had a little too much to drink,” I force out a laugh that is so unconvincing I wish I could take it back, erase it from existence, but instead it echoes in a loop in my head, taunting me. “I think I should go.”
Ash reaches for my hand, gently cradling it in his in a way that’s oddly comforting, “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, I just need to get home. It’s getting pretty late.”
Tumblr media
“Alright. Can we talk tomorrow?”
“Sure. I’ll call you.”
“’Kay,” he gives me one last kiss, and I hold on to it as long as I can before he steps away, almost forgetting to let go of my hand, “G’night Atlas.”
“Night.”
Tumblr media
My mind is racing as I start walking toward my apartment. Against my better judgement, I look back over my shoulder to see Ash walking in the other direction. Like me, his arms are folded across his chest, suddenly cold without the heat of our bodies together to keep warm. With each step, the distance between us grows, and along with it, a searing pain in my chest like I’m being ripped in two. Part of me wants to run after him, the other part wants to run home, and yet, deep down they feel like one and the same.
Tumblr media
When I finally make it through the front door, I head to the kitchen, fill up a glass of water and drink it down quickly.
Suddenly feeling exhausted, I allow myself to sink to the floor and lean back against the cabinets. I should probably go to bed, but if I’m honest, I’m worried my nightmare will return if I do, so I stay, staring at the wood floors and analyzing every line and flaw, looking for patterns that don’t exist.
My heavy eyelids have just started to close when I hear a soft, “Hey.”
Tumblr media
I look over to see Dawn’s bare feet appear around the island. She’s wearing her favorite pajama pants, the ones she refuses to get rid of even though they’re starting to fray at the edges around her ankles, and her toes are freshly painted. Only a clear coat, which means she’s probably been stressed or anxious, using the quiet ritual of giving herself a manicure and pedicure as a way to relax her mind more so than for beauty or fashion.
“Sorry if I woke you,” I say to her feet.
“Are you just getting home?”
I finally lift my head to look at her, “Yeah. Went out for a drink after work and lost track of time.”
“Did you have fun?”
“I did.”
Tumblr media
“Good,” she walks over and sits next to me, rubbing my shoulder on her way down, “so what’s with the face then?”
I let out a sigh, always equal parts grateful and annoyed that she can read me so well, “Just have a lot on my mind.”
“Do you wanna talk about it?”
I look over at her, debating for a moment before asking, “Do you ever have recurring dreams?”
“Sometimes. When we were at Foxbury, I used to have this dream all the time where we’d be packing to leave home, but I could never finish. I kept getting interrupted or distracted. No matter how hard I tried I could never pack a single bag. It was so frustrating.”
“Sounds like it.”
“Why do you ask?”
“I’ve been having this nightmare. The same one every few nights. It’s really starting to get to me.”
“What’s it about?”
Tumblr media
“It’s always in this strange place, it’s like a maze or something. And there’s this guy there, and I’m following him, but he keeps disappearing around corners. The whole time I feel like I have to get to him, but when I finally reach him…”
“What?”
“He dies. Every time. No matter what I do, it ends the same. I’m holding him in my arms and I’m screaming. And sometimes there’s these moments where I feel like I’m being electrocuted. It’s so strange. But I wake up feeling sad and scared and I just, I hate it.”
“That sounds awful.”
I take a deep breath. It feels good having said it out loud. I wish I’d told her about it sooner. When we were kids, we used to talk about our dreams all the time and analyze them. Back then we weren’t allowed access to the internet outside of schoolwork, nor were there dream analysis books in our library, so we just made stuff up and pretended like we knew what we were talking about, and pretended to believe each other. “What do you think it means?” I ask her.
Tumblr media
“I don’t know. Should we consult the oracle?” Of course, we have unlimited internet access now, so she holds out her hand and I place my phone in her palm. “Okay, let’s start with color. Are there any colors that stand out?”
“Um, blue? Oh wait, no, I think it’s teal.”
She scrolls for a few seconds before settling on a definition she likes, “So this says, ‘The color teal can represent emotional healing. It can be a sign that you need to take time to process your emotions and to heal from past traumas. It can also be a sign that you need to be more open to receiving love and support from those around you.’ Interesting.”
“Hm. I don’t know. Seems pretty intense for a color.”
Tumblr media
“Okay. Let’s see what it says about the maze.” I wait patiently as she scrolls once again. “Ah, so this one says, ‘A maze suggests you may feel overwhelmed by conflicting feelings. It is an objective representation of issues you are not recognizing.’”
“None of these are very helpful.”
“Well, is there anything else you remember?”
“Um, yeah, skeletons. There are always skeletons around.”
“Ew. Okay, skeletons. ‘Skeletons represent the fragility of life and the inevitability of death.’”
“Right. The guy dying in my arms could’ve told me that.”
Tumblr media
She sets the phone down and looks over at me, “Do you think it’s like when Aunt Joy used to say she’d dream of people right before they died?”
“Oh god, don’t say that.”
“Why? Who is the guy in your dream? Do you know him?”
I hesitate. I hadn’t planned on telling her that part, but maybe I should. “It’s Asher.”
“Asher? The guy at work you’ve been crushing on?”
“Mhm.”
“How long have you been dreaming about him?”
“Since the night before we met.”
“Before you met?”
I nod, letting the full weight of it all finally sink in.
“Spooky.”
I nearly tell her about everything else, like remembering things that have never happened, and what I said to him tonight, but I stop myself. One thing at a time.
Tumblr media
“I think we’re focusing on the wrong parts then. How do you feel during the dream? Like, you said you wake up feeling sad and scared, but how do you feel when you’re in it?”
“Confused, at first. I can’t figure out where he’s going or what he’s doing or why he won’t talk to me.”
“He’s ignoring you?”
I nod, “And then when I reach him, he just falls to the ground. I don’t even know how or why, but I feel like it’s my fault, like I could’ve prevented it or maybe I even caused it.” I stop, realizing that might be it, but hating the possibility. “What if it means I’m supposed to stay away from him? What if I’m the reason something happens to him?”

long. day. [Mike Schmidt x Fem!Reader]
Tumblr media
You screamed. You screamed your head OFF in the bathroom of your work. You just got done with a 12 hour shift and by the end of the day, there were so many people, so many Karen’s complaining about the food that’s gone wrong or would call you—
the night shift manager, telling you how horrible your employees were and that you needed to fire them. You argued back and forth with this one girl for ten minutes, saying your employer did nothing wrong and did what the girl asked to do. Get her order correct and serve. Your employer did as told, and the only simple thing that went wrong was that the kid forgot the damn freaking sauce. SAUCE.
You groaned, turning on the faucet to cold to splash your face. After a few seconds, your phone dinged on the marble counter. Mike had texted you and you immediately smiled at the screen in front.
Mike❤️:
Hey baby I’m coming over to pick you up
You placed your phone in your back pocket, a smile plastered on your face as you walk out and into the dining crowded area. Your eyes widen as you see your coworkers and managers struggle.
This was a rush dinner that never usually happens, so you slid carefully behind your coworkers to hide you from the people but the one said girl who gave you so much trouble had spot you, and she was talking to another manager yet again. This time, probably about you though. Your manager friend just shooed you away, giving you an apologetic smile.
Walking your way to the back, your phone buzzed in your pocket.
Mike❤️:
Baby, I’m here
You smiled, waving goodbye to your boss as you head your way up to the front. Mike was leaning on one of the walls. You were about to make your way up to him when all of a sudden, the same girl from earlier came by. “Excuse me,” she sassed. Your eyebrows tcked with annoyance, your face twitched.
“I’m sorry, but if you’re here to complain more to me I cannot help you. I’m off of work hours.” You gave her an annoyed smile look. “Uh, not for me you are.” She said. Your eyebrows raised. “Ma’am. I’ve worked for twelve hours today. Please do not push your limit.” You spoke like you had an angry tone, but in reality you were tired and just wanted to go home.
She scoffed, “excuse me? I’ll have you know I—” Mike had cut her off. “She’s. Off. Work. Hours,” you had to hold him back from going any closer to her, cause knowing karens in the business of hours, she’d probably report him and report you to your boss (which your glad your boss wouldn’t believe her anyways).
“Are you working here? No so, stop cutting me off. Your little slu—“ your eyes widened as a coworker, a minor, came over, all you did next was cover her mouth. “If you finish that sentence, I’ll have you banned from this store. Don’t you ever talk dirty here, there are kids underage. We’re here to keep them in a safe happy environment and what you’re doing is the opposite.” Her eyes widened at your movements, she pushed you off and scoffed, walking out the door and to her car.
Your boss was watching from the counter, giving you a thumbs up and a smile. “I’m so sorry about what you almost had to hear J.” You gave him a sympathetic smile. He shrugged, “sorry you have to deal with that b-word.” You chuckled at his response, “well have a nice rest of your shift. I’ll see you tomorrow,” you waved goodbye to your boss and coworkers, Mike doing the same and slowly walking behind you. He knew you were still a bit pissed off with the lady that almost insulted you in front of your coworkers.
As you opened and closed the door to Mikes car, you dropped your shoulders and the look of happiness off of your face. You looked absolutely exhausted. “I’m so sorry you had to deal with her baby,” his hands reached your thigh but all you wanted was no one to touch you at the moment right now. So you grabbed his hand, and placed it on his own thigh. “Long. Day. Let’s just drive home, okay?” You spoke with such softness, your face worn out with the look you gave him.
It was a quiet yet comfortable silence drive back to the house, the two of you walked side by side as Mike held your jacket for you. He opened the door, you thanked him and walked inside. Abby was drawing on the floor with the T.V turned on, one of her favorite cartoons playing. “You’re home!” She rushed over to you but was stopped by Mike, he explained in a soft whisper as she watched you walk past her and into the shared bedroom. She nodded and nodded at the directions Mike gave her, ran off into her room and closed the door.
Mike took off his shoes, walking over to the bedroom you were in. He saw you leaning on the bathroom counter with a defeated sigh. “I love my job, but god sometimes people like her make me want to quit.” You mumble, rubbing your shoulder as you tried to crack your neck. “All I know is you did an amazing job baby,” Mike came from behind you, his arms slowly but hesitantly wrapped around your waist. His head fit perfect as he placed it in between your neck and shoulder. “You did great out there,” he whispered, kissing your cheek and giving you more and more praise.
You smiled lightly as you looked at him through the mirror. “Can you help me take a shower? I’m just too tired to do anything right now.” He nodded. The two of you got undressed, you waited just a bit till the shower got warm then hopped in and Mike followed after you.
He did what was told, he washed your body, your face, and hair. “You were so amazing. You held the front up. All because of you.” Mike praised you once more, giving you a nice soft kiss to the lips. You smiled into it as you closed your eyes, “I love you.” He smiled back, kissing your cheek.
“I love you too.”

There’s a lump on the couch when Namjoon walks into his office. Velvet blanket wriggling with the force of human limbs at the sound of the door clicking shut.
“My love” Namjoon calls out for you, laptop left and forgotten on the rounded coffee table before he sits beside what he assumes is your feet.
You hum. Tugging the blanket under your chin to meet his eyes- as tired and weary as your own.
“You're unbelievably cute when you're tired” he runs a thumb over your cheek, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
You sigh, “Am not, watching as he tugs his suit jacket off. “Today was the busiest I’ve ever seen the shop. And I was the only one working this afternoon. I think I'm exhausted”
That hint of a smile on Namjoon’s face melts into a frown, eyebrows drawn down with the force of his displeasure.
“You poor thing. Surely there was someone to help you?”
You shake your head, “They clocked out early, so it was just me most of the day” your bottom lip tugs down into a pout, “I hate working at the front desk”
“I know you do, love” he tucks a piece of hair behind your ear, “How are you feeling?”
“Not sure” he watches your shoulders shrug under the blanket, muscles wound tight with the tension of the day.
“Not sure?” his head tilts ever so slightly.
“Tired. But I’m too aware of everything to even think about sleeping. And overwhelmed. Like I wanna itch my brain a bit or remove my ears from my head”
Namjoon hums, “What about a nap? Would music be too much for you at the moment?”
“Probably”
“Silence it is then” he nods, slouching a little further into the back of the couch, “I’ll catch up on some work, and you can tell me all about your day when you feel better? A little less overwhelmed? We can always talk at home later, or in the morning too, whenever you're ready, love”
You tug the blanket over your chin, sinking into the plush cushions, eyes falling shut.
The rhythmic tapping of Namjoon’s keyboard is more welcome than a conversation, and Namjoon doesn’t hold that against you. Knowing that in your own time, the fizzling frustration and wound-up emotions of the day would spill past your lips, unfurling all the bad that had been weighing you down for what he can only assume is most of the day.
“There was a dog in the shop today” you break the silence, maybe an hour later. Voice foreign to your own ears, and you wince a little at the shattered silence.
Namjoon closes his laptop, leaving it on the coffee table once more as he turns his attention back to you.
“A dog?”
“Mhhmm” you push yourself to sit up, blanket still wrapped tightly around your body, “This old man brought his dog in, and then it peed all over the floor and I had to clean it but, he was cute, so I didn’t mind”
“The old man, or the dog?” Namjoon raises an eyebrow.
A smile stretches your cheeks, “Both. I’m not sure what breed the dog was, but the old man told me he was buying flowers for his wife, it’s their anniversary tomorrow”
“Ah, they must have been married for a long time” he muses, and you nod.
“I hope we’re like that one day”
“Old?”
Your nose scrunches up at that, “Old and together” you nod, “And married” you add.
“Is that all?” Namjoon tugs you closer until your body is leaning against his side, his arm slung over your shoulder.
“Yeah. As long as we’re still together then I don’t mind”
“You’re lucky I have no plans of getting rid of you” he hums and your eyebrows furrow at that, head tilting up to catch a look at his face.
“Excuse me?” you scoff, though Namjoon can hear the hint of a smile laced between your words, “if anything, I would be the one getting rid of you”
Now it’s Namjoon’s turn to look down at you with furrowed brows, “I would sure hope not”
“You’re lucky I like you”
“Is that so?” he challenges, head tilting down slightly to press a kiss over the warm skin of your cheek, then to your temple.
Your hand slips from the safety of your blanket, fingers tracing over his jaw before you gently tug his lips to meet your own.
Your lungs expand with the harsh intake of breath you suck in once the both of you part, your lips shiny with Namjoon’s saliva.
“There was also a young boy that came in today” you whisper against his lips, losing your breath when he gives you a fleeting kiss, lips pillowing yours. Silently begging for more, drawing you closer as he pulls away.
You press another kiss to the corner of his lips.
“A boy?” Namjoon encourages, mind trailing after what you had been about to tell him.
“Yes”
“And what about him?” Namjoon prods.
He doesn’t think it’s jealousy that colours his words. He never found himself to be a jealous man, not even when he had started dating you. He wasn’t oblivious to the looks you would get, eyes of men that would never be yours probably conjuring up a thousand fantasies to fuel their lonely mind. And Namjoon wasn’t an insecure man; he would never subject you to a strict way of living—limiting your self expression simply because of outside forces.
And he knew you wouldn’t cheat. Just as he, himself would never imagine himself stooping to that level. That didn’t mean he wasn’t wary when you brough up other testosterone filled, bull-headed men that were more than likely to hit on you. Never seeming to grasp the concept of ‘no’ or ‘I’m not interested’.
You blink up at Namjoon, scooting yourself from his side, legs crossed under your blanket with cheeks dusted the lightest pink.
“So?” Namjoon asks, strange feeling whittling its way throughout his blood stream and into his heart.
“He reminded me of you”
“Pardon?”
“He reminded me a lot of us, when we were young” you say again, and Namjoon blinks.
“How so?”
You let the blanket fall off your shoulders, “He was curious. Asked so many questions about the flowers. Genuinely interested in what I had to say.”
“I only ever asked because I knew you loved them so much” he huffs, and you catch your laugh on your tongue.
“Not only that” you continue, “He got her the same flowers you got me, the day you asked me out”
“He made the right choice then” Namjoon tells you, “And I suppose, their relationship will be just as lucky as ours”
“You think so?” you ask him, arms slipping around his stomach, head resting on his shoulder.
“Maybe. Though he’ll never be as lucky as I am to have you”

The Anniversary Party  - 7:15 p.m.
Pull it together, I think to myself, wiping the tears that were trying to make their escape. I decided that spending the drive in my thoughts sounded better than trying to drown them out with music, which is how I spent most of my day fighting the urge to cry and losing.
If I thought the idea of just having to tell him that I had to go back home was terrible, watching him cry is probably in the top three worst moments of my life. Seeing the way his eyes looked when I told him that his comment was wrong, I could feel that he regretted it. I can’t even be mad at him when I know he didn’t mean it. Listening to him sob and cry to me that he was sorry broke my heart; I just couldn’t bring myself to say anything at the moment.
Once I got home, even though I was emotionally exhausted, I couldn’t sleep. I could just hear him in my head on a loop, practically begging me to stay. I can’t believe I left. I knew I wouldn’t say anything about my work situation if I stayed, so I didn’t. And now, I regret it. I should have stayed and told him everything.
I spent a lot of the night just wishing I hadn’t given him attitude because it wasn’t fair to him. I had been working most of the day and finally had someone call me back that I’d been waiting on, but they were upset with the message I had for them. So, I was on the receiving end of one of the angry bar owners, unlike Jacob, when I walked into the bar, and I still didn’t know what made me take that out on him.
I would take it back in a second if I could.
Now I’m sitting in my car, parked in my usual spot down the street from the bar, debating heavily on what I should do. I never actually packed anything because I would start crying every time I tried. It’s not even been a full day since we saw each other, and I’m terrified to walk in there.
I don’t want to have that conversation tonight; I can’t ruin the anniversary party more than I possibly already have. Maybe depending on how he acts, I’ll mention something after Thanksgiving. Then it came back to me; I told him I would text him all day tomorrow… oh god– what have I done?
I look up at the sky; the moon is faint in the distance, but she’s there.
“Cass, I did this for you,” I whisper. “I wish you could tell me if it was going to work out or if I royally messed up.” Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath, I shut off my car. When I step out, a breeze washes over me, the type of cold where you know snow is coming. Making sure I have all his paperwork and my bag, I start my walk over to the bar.
I really could just go home.
I know the address.. I could just mail this.
I don’t think I can do it.
I don’t know what possessed me to look back up, but I did, and the cloud that had been blocking the moon moved. The light from it felt different this time, and a smirk laced my lips as I looked at it.
I’m taking that as my sign, Cass. I hear you.
As I get closer, I see the number of cars parked along the street and vaguely see through the bar windows. There’s a lot of people here for it being a Wednesday. Good job, Jacob.
7:36 p.m.
The door chime goes off, but enough people are talking, and the music is still loud, so there’s no chance anybody heard it. I scan the bar, looking for him, just hand him the paperwork and then leave. You can try to talk to him over the weekend and maybe work something out or at least make sure he doesn’t hate you. I try to pep talk myself.
Not seeing him anywhere, I start to wander around, kind of hoping not to run into anybody, which is a bold choice right now. I bump into someone while trying to find him, and she turns around quickly.
“Oh! I’m sorry, honey, didn’t see you there!” Her voice is loud but sweet. “You look lost– what do you need?” She gently holds my arm as she asks.
“Uh- I need to find Jake. I don’t see him, though,” I tell her. Why do I feel like I should know who she is?
Her eyes widen at the sound of his name, but her expression softens when she tells me, “He’s in there somewhere! I thought I saw him run outback a minute ago.”
“Oh, okay. Thank you. I’ll just hang out for a few then,” I shoot her a small smile.
She smiles back at me; her smile feels familiar. She quietly says, “If I run into him, I can let him know you’re here. What’s your name?”
I hesitate for a second, “Oh, um, Charlotte.”
“Pretty,” she lets out. “I’ll try to grab him for ya.”
Not even a minute passes, and I see him come down the hallway, but he definitely can’t see me. He looks so good, too. I linger behind people to avoid making eye contact as my heart rate starts to pick up. You can do it. I watch him from a distance; he’s behind the bar, handing someone a drink. That smile, but his eyes look tired. The way he moves captivates me; it feels like I’m seeing him for the first time all over again.
He’s just pouring a beer for someone, but even something so mundane makes the butterflies erupt in my stomach. When he slides it over to the customer, his shirt falls open more and shows off his chest, and his necklace dangles, making my body warm because I’ve felt that necklace graze my skin before. Good god, why does he just look like this?
All I can see in my mind is how gorgeous he is, especially when we were holed up together. He would put together his cute little outfits when we did things. The way he would walk around in his short and tight little boxers, leaving no room for imagination, was fine with me.
His smile was still my favorite, whether it was just the little grin as he held back some pirate phrase, knowing I’d laugh at how dumb he was. Or when he fully smiles.. that boy is so beautiful. I could probably write a dissertation on how much I love that smile. I love a lot of things about him. His smile, the way he’s always touching me somehow, that silly English accent..maybe I-
Suddenly, I hear a clinking sound that multiplied rapidly, pulling me from my thoughts. Glancing around, I see everyone sitting in the booth they always choose when they’re all together. They all are holding their glasses up, tapping whatever they can against them to get everyone’s attention.
Josh holds his glass up behind the bar, pulling Jake into his side. Jake’s face is completely red as he looks down, with a slight smile on his face.
“I feel like everyone here should already know, but my brother is the owner of this fine establishment,” Josh starts, “And I just want to say how proud I am of him for taking the chance and managing to stay open for the past year,” He leans over, kissing the side of Jake’s head, and I see him mumble something to him while everyone claps for him.
“Now, I know you really want to hear from the man of the hour, so,” Josh lets out,  and I watch Jake shake his head a few times, but everyone gets real quiet. We all collectively just stared at him, waiting to see what he would say, and all I could think was, ‘I’ll even hold your hand if you get nervous,’ when he actually starts to speak.
“Um, I wasn’t really prepared to say anything, but,” he starts. “I never thought this would actually happen, um.. especially to me.” I watch as he fidgets with the ring he has on. You can do this, Jake.
“I don’t know that I could have done it without my family basically throwing me overboard into the idea. It was a for death or glory moment for me, and—“ he pauses, looking up at everyone just admiring him. “I’m truly just so happy to be here now.”
His eyes scan the room, and my heart drops when he meets my stare; blinking slowly, it feels like time has stopped, and all I can do is smile at him. I watch a slight smirk grow on his face when he says, “I couldn’t have done it without you. I’m endlessly grateful for everyone keeping me afloat. It’s only been a year, so—“ he grabs the glass next to him, holding it up, “Too many more.”
The way everyone cheered and started clinking glasses had my eyes welled up. His brothers, Danny included, pulled him into hugs, which only naturally meant the girls and Quinn were next. I just watch him as he beams at everyone who walks up to him and gets all the praise he deserves. But his eyes kept wandering back to me.
I’m so proud of you, baby.
Tumblr media
8:03 p.m.
Those green eyes– are all I can think about as I stand there.
My heart about stopped when I saw her. I never would have expected her to show up after last night. But the second we locked eyes again, I felt less nervous. Maybe it was just the simple fact she showed up or the way I could see her trying to hide a tear as she smiled back at me.
Finishing my weird toast while looking at her was the closest I was going to get to her holding my hand tonight, and that’s okay. Immediately, Josh pulled me into a hug after rocking me back and forth.
“She’s here,” he whispers into my ear, almost like he’s trying to protect me.
I turn my face to whisper back, “I know.”
He leans back from the hug, looking at me, “You can do this,” he says, squeezing my shoulders a few times. “I’m so proud of you.”
“Thank you,” is all I can manage to say back to him.
Once I walk out from behind the bar, I’m practically mauled by the rest of them. I don’t think I’ve hugged so many people back-to-back like that before. Listening to a slew of ‘Proud of you! and ‘Happy anniversary! as they take their turn pulling me into them.
Getting to Quinn, who quietly asks, “Are you going to talk to her?”
“I mean,” I whisper back, “I’ll see what she says first.. I’m not going to push too hard today.”
They nod, leaning back from the hug, “You’ll get her, I promise.” Offering me a smile, which I quickly return.
“Love you,” I whisper, pulling them back into the hug for a second.
They just mumble back, “Love you too.” Giving me an extra tight squeeze before letting go.
I started to walk towards her, but my dad stepped in front of me first. He holds out his arms, inviting me for a hug, like everyone else has so far.
“Proud of you, kid,” he mumbles next to my ear.
I rest my head against him for a second before moving back, looking at him, and quietly letting out, “Thank you.”
“I think someone is waiting to talk to you,” his voice is low, nodding towards Charlotte. His hand grabs my shoulder, squeezing a few times, and then quietly says, “Go get her.”
When I go to walk over to her, I finally see her, and even though I’ve seen her in all forms the last couple of weeks, she always leaves me breathless. I could stare at her for the rest of my life and still not understand how she can be so effortlessly beautiful.
“Hey, you,” I say as I get closer to her. “I didn’t know if you’d still be here tonight.”
“Well, I do have these for you,” Her voice is soft. She holds out a folder filled with paperwork. “Everything is good to go, and Melody is certified.”
“Thank you,” I say quietly.
She meets my stare and quietly lets out, “Of course.” A soft smile laces her lips as we look at each other, which only makes the corners of mine twitch. I stepped a little closer to her, but she didn’t back up.
“Um, I know it’s already kinda late,” I start, knowing I sound nervous but still asking, “Are you staying for a bit, or do you need to go?”
She uncomfortably says, “I should probably head out.. I have a lot of driving ahead of me.”
“No, that makes sense,”  I say, looking around for somewhere to set the folder down. “I’ll um..” Turning around, I see my dad, waving him over subtly.
I tell him quietly, “Hey, I’m gonna walk her to her car. Can you hold this?” He just nods at me, glancing over to Char.
“Oh, you don’t have to do that,” she rambles out, her hand landing on my arm, and my heart drops at the contact. Instinctually,  I cover her hand with mine when I turn back to her.
“I’ve walked you to your car for three weeks; you really think I’m gonna stop now?” I tell her, which makes her laugh.
“You know what,” she giggles quietly. “You’re right.” I set my drink on a random table, knowing it’ll be lost in the sea of glasses now, but who cares?
Pushing open the door and gesturing for her to go out first, “After you.”
The walk to her car is quiet, neither of us really knowing what to say until she finally breaks it, “She looks nice tonight.”
Looking over at her as she looks at the moon, making me smile despite the heartache, “She does.”
“Your little toast was nice, by the way,” she says quietly, glancing over at me.
Looking down at the sidewalk for a second, “I wasn’t ready for that, and as you can imagine, I'm not much of a public speaker.” She laughs at me; my heart starts to race.
“Well,” she starts, as we make it to her car, “I thought you did a great job.”
I slowly blink at her, “Thank you.”
We stare at each other silently for a moment. I would give anything to just pretend that nothing happened and that everything is still how it was yesterday morning.
“I won’t keep you, it’s freezing.” I lean forward, pulling her door open for her like I always do. She looks at me for a second and then steps closer, wrapping her arms around me. I’ve never let go of her car door faster as I pull her in tight; please don’t let this be the last time. My hand runs down the back of her head, just cherishing the hug while it lasts. Breathing her in slowly, trying to engrave the scent of her perfume into my brain. Turning my face and letting my lips rest against the side of her head, unable to resist the urge just to press one small kiss into her hair. One more.
Once she starts to let go, I loosen my grip, letting her decide when she’s done. My hands run down the back of her arms as she pulls back until her hands land in mine. We just stare at each other for a second when she squeezes so slightly, and I return the gesture before letting go. I open her door again,  and she sits in her driver's seat, looking back up at me.
“Drive safe, Red.”
She stares at me for a second and then quietly lets out, ”Will do, Captain.”
I swallow hard at the pet name she chose, but I can’t stop the smile from creeping in. Shutting her door gently, I can’t decide if that made me feel better or worse.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
8:40p.m
My mom met me at the door, “So, that was her, right?”
“Mhm,” I quickly respond, not sure of how far she’s going with this. I don’t know how much I can even talk about right now.
“She’s beautiful,” she tells me, a little inquisitive inflection laced in it.
I nod quietly, “She’s incredible.”
“You really love her, don’t you?”
“I feel insane, but I swear I’d do anything to keep her.”
“Oh, sweetheart,” she says, grabbing my shoulders. “She’ll come back. I saw how she looked at you.” She runs her hand down the back of my head before tucking my hair behind my ear as she looks at me. “Her eyes lit up the moment she saw you. There was no denying it.”
I glance over to the door and then back down, “I just hope you’re right.”
“Hey,” she practically scolds me, “If she loves you, she’ll come home, alright?” She gently taps my chest a few times. “And if I know anything about you, there’s no reason she wouldn’t come back to you.” Her hand held the side of my face. She brushed her thumbs over my cheekbones a few times, forcing me to look at her. She just quietly coos, “Oh, my sweet little boy.”
My throat hurts as I choke back the emotions threatening to come up. I’m gonna cry if she keeps talking. My arms instinctually pull her in for a hug, tucking my face into her shoulder and letting out a deep breath. She rubs my back for a second before I finally mumble out, “I love you, mum.”
“I love you too,” she tells me, pulling back from the hug enough to look at me. “Now, go enjoy your night, babe. You earned it.”
I just smile at her for a second and then mumble, “Thank you.”
She pulls my face in, kissing my cheek a few times, and then looks at me with watery eyes, whispering, “I’m so proud of you.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
Once I went back to talking to everyone, I started to relax a bit. Taking my mind off the inevitable questions that would come up tomorrow. It was nice to have time just to see all the regulars who had been coming in since we opened.
I find myself sitting with two of my favorite people for a while, Linda and Eleanor. Listening to them tell me about what their Thanksgiving plans are– which is honestly very sweet.
“Well, we are both single old broads, so I told Miss Ellie just to come join me, and we could watch the parade together and make some food,” Linda tells me. “Figured it’s better than us sitting at home alone!”
Eleanor giggled before letting out a quiet, “Absolutely is.”
“I’m glad you two will be spending the day together,” I tell them. “Are you seeing family at all?”
They go on to tell me about how they either just spend Christmas with their families or sometimes people will come to them, but it just depends on the year and how they’re feeling.
“What are you boys doing for the holiday?” Eleanor asks.
I sighed, “Well, my parents are up, obviously. So, we’ll all pile into their Airbnb tomorrow morning, and my mom will spend the whole day making food and forcing us to eat until we’re about to throw up.” Laughing a little at the thought because it’s the truth.
“I’m sure it’s a wonderful time,” Eleanor says. “Your family seems fun to be around.”
I glance around after she makes the comment. Seeing my brothers laughing together in their typical booth. Sam’s arm draped around Willa, keeping her close like he’s worried she’ll try to escape. I love that he’s found someone like her, even if it is weird to see him so protective over someone.
Moving my eyes over to Danny, shaking his head at whatever nonsense Sam must have spewed. Mel tucked into him like she always has, but fully engulfed in conversation with Quinn. Oh, Quinn.
The wonderful person who has my best friend and twin brother wrapped around their finger. I knew that when Josh found someone, they would fit him perfectly because he is such a special person, and there was no way that he could just find an ordinary human to be his partner. After spending as much time as I have with Quinn, I couldn’t imagine someone better.
The way that Mel and Josh take turns lingering near the table so they can all hang out throughout the night because not only are they all best friends, but we’re all practically family at this point.
I look back to Eleanor with a soft smile, “They really are.”
I spent a little longer hanging out with them before deciding to take over the bar for a while. Both of them hugged and congratulated me on the anniversary before I walked off to relieve the other two.
Sometimes, it was nice to be behind the bar alone, just talking with whoever was sitting up there and making drinks. It made the time pass quickly, and I didn’t have time to think about much else, especially on nights like tonight when the bar was full. The only thing missing was her.
Having her sit at the end of the bar for the last few weeks for hours, just giving me shit about my job or making little comments that would drive me mad until I could finally close the bar and whisk her away to my bedroom. Spending our nights teasing each other while I served people and trained Melody, I always felt like it was torture because I just wanted to clock out so badly. Now, it feels odd that she isn’t here.
How she looked at me while we stood there, her lightly squeezing my hands like I’ve done to her so many times in the last couple of weeks. Just to let her know I was there. I feel like it should make me feel more confident about her, but I’m afraid to get my hopes too high, even if it’s probably too late for that.
When Josh and Mel make their way back to the bar, I let  Josh know that I’m going to step out for a minute. I quietly slide into my office, grabbing my lighter and cigarettes from my desk drawer and hiding them in my pocket before wandering out the back door.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
10:00 p.m.
It smells like snow. The air is a different type of cold; you can smell winter around the corner. I lit my cigarette, took that first drag, and pulled my phone out.
She should be home by now, looking at the time and then hesitating to say something to her. I stare out at the docks, watching the boats gently rock. Remembering the moment that she leaned in first, how relieved I was that it wasn’t just me wanting that. Her smile when I went back in for another kiss as if she thought I wouldn’t want that. My heart aches at the thought. I should just .. send her something.
We spent almost a month in this weird situation, and it feels wrong to go radio silent. Maybe Mom is right.
I start typing away, deleting the message, and starting over probably twenty times, not knowing what to say but just wanting to say anything to keep her in my life potentially. Even if she’s not mine.
I finally hit send when it doesn’t feel too insane, but my body flinches when I feel someone’s hand on my shoulder.
“I had a feeling I’d find you out here,” my dad quietly tells me. “You okay?”
I nod, “Mhm, I just needed a break from the noise.”
“Between your mother and both of your brothers, can’t say I blame you,” he laughs. “I know that isn’t the entire reason, and you don’t have to say it.”
I let out a deep sigh before inhaling more smoke into my lungs to try and stop the sad from coming back.
“I just texted her. Hoping that she at least will keep talking to me if anything.” I tell him, feeling a bit pathetic.
He stares at me for a second, “She really got you good, huh?”
“She’s perfect, dad. How was I supposed to not fall for her?” I almost laugh at it, taking one last drag from the cigarette that is threatening to burn me at this point. Squishing the lit end into the railing before turning to walk back to the bar. “Did I make a bad choice doing that or..?”
“Your mom is much better in these situations, but,” he starts as we slowly walk back. “I think you saw a beautiful girl and took your chance. I’m positive if I were in the same situation with your mom back then, I would have done the same thing.”
“I knew I was fucked from the day I met her, y’know?” I say. “I couldn’t stop thinking about her after that.” I just watch the ground as we walk, getting closer to the bar.
His arm wraps around my shoulders, pulling me into his side as I’m about to pull open the back door for the bar.
“She’ll come back, bud,” he says. “I saw how she looked at you.. I know that look.”  I lean my head against him for a second before he pulls my shoulders away from him and turns me towards him.
“Please make sure you wash your hands and drink something, and I won’t tell your mother that you still smoke. I’ll never hear the end of it.” We both laugh at the fact she would absolutely make it his problem.
“Will do,” I laugh out. “Um.. thank you.” I stare at him, fighting the emotions that want to come out, which, after the last twenty-four hours, is getting more difficult.
He breathes out a typical dad sigh, a slight smile on his face, before he wraps me up in another hug, “Of course. Just wanna see you happy, kid.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
The bar is closing early tonight because of the holiday, and truthfully, I’m a bit relieved that I don’t have to sit here until two in the morning.  Mostly, everyone had left, and there were just a few stragglers to take care of during the last hour of the night. Just trying to focus on the fact I’ll get to hang out with my family tomorrow and how nice it’ll be to just spend time with them. Even if I want nothing more than to bring her with me.
11:00 p.m.
Once everything is basically cleaned up, I sneak out front. Something about being outside helped clear my head, even if it was brief.
How she looked at me before she left makes my heart skip a beat when I think about it. Maybe she isn’t completely done here. It took all my strength not to kiss her again, but I didn’t want to overstep after last night.
If I can at least keep talking to her, maybe we can make things happen because there’s no chance she wasn’t at least kind of interested. Recounting all the times, she would just look at me from a distance, which I’m sure she didn’t think I would notice. But her stare is a hard one to ignore.
My mind drifts off to all the moments that I should have realized I was falling in love with her. I don’t know who I was kidding thinking I could survive just being friends with benefits.
Hearing her cry on the other end of the phone the day after I held her in my office, I never walked out of the bar so fast. She sounded so panicked that I would have gone to her if I had known where she was. But the moment I got her to laugh, my heart felt different.
Walking into my room and seeing her standing there defeated and drunk, fighting with the zipper on her pants, I know I laughed at her, but she was so cute. And then her in my sweatshirt with her bare legs staring back at me once I got the zipper apart for her. Leaving a kiss on my cheek before I left the room, my heart raced for so long after that.
The night after we kissed, walking her to her car, she was absolutely terrified that she wouldn’t seem into it. Then she looked at me, leaning against my chest, and let out a quiet, “Jacob.” I knew I needed to kiss her again at that moment. The way she grabbed at my shirt when I did tells me that she was craving it, too.
When she thought I was fully asleep on the couch, she slipped up and called me ‘baby.’ She just wanted to make sure I was comfortable, but if she only knew that having her curled up to me was enough. Feeling her tuck herself back into me, playing with my necklace as I drifted back to sleep, I could have stayed there forever.
The entire day we spent in Salem. The fact she wanted me to be present with her, calling me ‘babe’ in public, how she kept holding my hand all day. She was always so shy when I would pay for things, but I wanted nothing more than for her to have a good day and try to make up for the fact that her tradition was disrupted.
Nothing could have prepared me for the way she looked at me when we took pictures. Seeing it after, it’s written all over my face, even if I didn’t realize it in the moment.
I’ll never know what possessed me to sing to her in that bar, but the smile on her face was worth it. Swaying around with her, her little giggles as I spun her away from me but quickly pulled her back in. All that I could see in my head was me twirling her around in a white dress someday. And god, she looked beautiful.
The door creaks as it opens, bringing me back to earth.
“Enjoying the cold?” Josh asks, walking over.
I breathe out, “I guess.”
“Well, I’m going to head up,” He says, grabbing my shoulder. “It’s going to be a long day tomorrow.”
“Yeah— I don’t know how ready I am,” I let out before telling him, “You can leave it unlocked. I’ll be up in a few.”
He pulls me into a hug, “Love you, don’t stay out here too long; it’s already getting late.”
“Love you too.”
He looks back at me before slipping inside, with a slight grin on his face, and says, “Just let me know if she shows back up.”
I smile, giving him a slow nod, “Will do.”
Something about the air tonight and the pep talks from both of my parents convinced me to stay out here for a little bit longer before going upstairs. Doing the mental gymnastics to make sure I don’t get my hopes too high. I slide my phone from my pocket, seeing that it’s only 11:35 p.m. I go to open my texts and it’s still on hers.
Read at 11:02 p.m.
Maybe she just got to her parents and that’s why she didn’t reply yet.
I stare at my lock screen, a photo I snuck of her in Salem. She was so beautiful and happy. It’s mostly the back of her head as we were walking down the street, but she had glanced over as I took it so you can vaguely see her side profile. I don’t think she’s noticed that I did it, but if anything happens this weekend, I’ll change it. But for now, I’ll just keep her there.
The streets are dimly lit and quiet now that everyone has gone home; I watch as a few snowflakes start to fall. I suck in a deep breath, letting it slowly leave my body, trying to release some of the anxiety, but the only thing I can do is look up at the moon and think, please come home, Charlotte.
Sliding my phone back into my pocket, I stare down at my shoes for a moment, and then I hear footsteps. I let out a little breath before I looked over, biting the inside of my lip.
“Hi.”
“Hey, you.”

@flashfictionfridayofficial prompt - "change in tone"
Crowley had seemed perfectly all right, at the start of the day. He’d talked with his usual zest about his plans for the garden, the lecture he planned to give the underperforming tomatoes, the idea of planting some more fruit trees. He’d also complained about the brightness of the sun, again just like ordinary.
But when Crowley announced that he was going to take a nap, the change in tone was enough to shatter Aziraphale’s attention on his book. He looked up at once, tucking a bookmark between the pages. “What’s wrong?”
Crowley’s expression froze, went brittle. He swallowed hard, throat rolling. “Just tired, that’s all.”
“Hardly. I know your tired voice, my dear. That isn’t your tired voice.” Even more concerned now, Aziraphale rose and put his book aside. Novels were nothing compared to his dear partner’s well-being. “And you’re flushed. And sweating.”
“Nnnh. It’s a hot day. Summer, y’know.”
“It is summer, yes, but hardly hot enough to make you sweat like this. Particularly if you were working in the shade, which you were. I saw you out the kitchen window.”
Crowley sighed, shoulders dropping. Oh dear, he did look simply awful. “M’ not feeling very well.”
Aziraphale could certainly see that much, but he resisted the urge to point that out. “Did you hurt yourself gardening? You have done an awful lot of it this week.”
“Nuh. I mean, my legs aren’t terrifically happy with me, but that’s not the problem.” Swaying a little, Crowley leaned against the wall. He looked as if he could certainly use his cane, but didn’t have it out at the moment. “Different sort of not feeling well. I think I’m sick, angel.”
“Oh dear.” Aziraphale crossed to him and gently took his arm, steadying him as he swayed again. “What sort of symptoms?”
“Well, if I’m flushed, I’m guessing fever. And I’ve got a sore throat.” Crowley took a deep breath, then winced and swallowed hard again. He really did look just dreadful, and worse every minute. “A really sore throat. I don’t think I’m gonna be doing dinner out tonight. Or possibly tomorrow.”
“If you’re sick, certainly not. I want you to rest, my dear.” Gently, he coaxed Crowley into motion, being sure to support his weight as much as possible. Being sick would no doubt make Crowley even more achy, even if he hadn’t quite wounded himself gardening. “Would you like me to make you some nice tea or something? Perhaps with honey?”
Crowley nodded, still looking rather miserable but perhaps encouraged by the thought. “Maybe I’ll watch a film or something instead of sleep.”
“I don’t think that’s really a very good idea. You look so, so exhausted. And you love sleep.”
“I also love watching films,” Crowley muttered, but he sank into bed almost as soon as they reached the bedroom. He hadn’t even taken off his sunglasses, or his shoes for that matter. “Could go for something exciting.”
Aziraphale patted Crowley’s shoulder, then removed his shoes and set them aside. “Perhaps your dreams will be exciting.”
“Hrgh. I don’t like the sort of excitement my dreams usually have.”
Wincing, Aziraphale smoothed Crowley’s hair again. The poor old dear did have an awful lot of nightmares. “I’m sorry. Perhaps if I put on a film for you, you can dream about that instead?”
A faint smile tugged at Crowley’s lips, although his eyes remained firmly closed behind the dark glasses. “Nnnh. I definitely won’t take a nap if you do that.”
“I could read to you.”
Crowley gave a soft sigh. “Could. Probably shouldn’t. M’ really, really not feeling terrific.”
“Then you should sleep. Excitement can wait until later.” Gently, Aziraphale stroked his hair again. “Would you like me to take your sunglasses? They’re awfully smushed into your face right now, which I don’t imagine is very comfortable.”
“Hadn’t actually noticed. But yeah, sounds good. Thanks.”
“Of course.” Trying not to disturb him too much, Aziraphale pulled off the dark glasses and set them aside. He almost pulled a blanket across Crowley, then looked at how badly he was sweating and changed his mind. “I’ll fetch your tea now, hmm? Do you want anything else?”
“Nuh.”
Trying not to fret too much, Aziraphale returned to the kitchen and turned on the kettle. He and Crowley had both gotten sick on occasion over the course of their existence, and it usually didn’t get too serious. So long as Crowley got some nice rest, he ought to recover without any real trouble.
Carefully, Aziraphale made a cup of tea, stirring some local honey in, and then added just a little bit of tepid water to cool it. Searing hot water likely wouldn’t be very pleasant on Crowley’s sensitive throat.
He had intended to suggest that Crowley should drink his tea before taking a nap. But when he returned to the bedroom, he found Crowley already quite thoroughly asleep. Almost snoring, in fact, his breaths deep if congested.
“My poor dear. You just rest, and I’ll tend to you while you recover.” Aziraphale set down the tea, then bent and kissed Crowley’s warm cheek. “Sleep, and dream of the good sort of excitement.”
